Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ A 1:20-scale hydraulic model initially simulated forty-seven 4-ft-wide wicket gates, three 8-ft-wide piers, the 923-ft-long lock wall, two freely suspended 60-ft-wide by 11-ft-high submersible tainter gates, the 50-ft-long stilling basin and basin elements, 477 ft of the upstream approach, and 1,000 ft of the exit channel. During testing the initial design was modified to simulate one 84-ft-wide by 16-ft-high freely suspended submersible tainter gate, two 12-ft-wide piers, fifty-eight 4-ft-wide wicket gates, the 923-ft-long lock wall, a 13l.25-ft-long stilling basin and basin elements, 477 ft of the upstream approach and 1,000 ft of the exit channel. Riprap protection requirements were also determined upstream and downstream of the structure. Construction conditions such as protection of the cofferdam were examined. The gate lifting mechanism consisted of a cable at each end of the gate attached to load cells. The magnitude and frequency of the forces acting on the cable supporting each end of the gate were measured. Tests indicated little likelihood of the cables being subjected to exciting forces occurring at a periodic frequency with flow either over or under the subject gate in its normal operating range. Discharge characteristics and coefficients with various operating scenarios were determined.

Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ The guard lift gate for the Lockport Lock will be equipped to operate during emergency closure of the lock chamber. This will involve operation under dynamic heads. A 1:24-scale section model of the lock chamber, guard and service gate sills, the guard gate, approach area, and lock chamber was used to study magnitude and frequency of the hydraulic forces acting on the lifting cables and the flow conditions over the gate. Tests indicated that the hydraulic load increased as the exposed gate height increased until the exposed gate height became approximately equal to 60 percent of the pool height. At this point, the hydraulic loads peaked and began to decrease with increasing exposed gate heights. This Hydraulic Model Investigation yielded hydraulic loads less than the calculated hydraulic loads provided by the US Army Engineer District, Rock Island. Although some gate vibrations were indicated, they were random and small compared to the magnitude of the total load.
