Seismic reflection data (normal incidence and wide angle) are unique assets for solid Earth sciences as they provide critical information about the physical properties and structure of the lithosphere as well as about the shallow subsurface for exploration purposes. The resolution of these seismic data is highly appreciated; however they are logistically complex and expensive to acquire, and their geographical coverage is limited. Therefore, it is essential to make the most of the data that have already been acquired. The collation and dissemination of seismic open-access data are then key to promote accurate and innovative research and to enhance new interpretations of legacy data. This work presents the Seismic DAta REpository (SeisDARE), which is, to our knowledge, one of the first comprehensive open-access online databases that stores seismic data registered with a permanent identifier (DOI). The datasets included here are openly accessible online and guarantee the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) principles of data management, granting the inclusion of each dataset in a statistics referencing database so its impact can be measured. SeisDARE includes seismic data acquired in the last 4 decades in the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. These areas have attracted the attention of international researchers in the fields of geology and geophysics due to the exceptional outcrops of the Variscan and Alpine orogens and wide foreland basins, the crustal structure of the offshore margins that resulted from a complex plate kinematic evolution, and the vast quantities of natural resources contained within. This database has been built thanks to a network of national and international institutions, promoting a multidisciplinary research and is open for international data exchange and collaborations. As part of this international collaboration, and as a model for inclusion of other global seismic datasets, SeisDARE also hosts seismic data acquired in Hardeman County, Texas (USA), within the COCORP project (Consortium for Continental Reflection Profiling). SeisDARE aims to make easily accessible old and recently acquired seismic data and to establish a framework for future seismic data management plans. The slab beneath the Alboran Sea is a consequence of the collision between two continents (Europe and Africa), which was initiated along the northeastern Spanish coast, experienced slab rollback and migrated to the area adjacent to the two continents. The tectonic background in this area includes episodes of collisions with adjacent continents as well as extension of those basins in the western Mediterranean. Here, we present three-dimensional (3D) Kirchhoff-approximate generalized Radon transform (GRT) images to further constrain the lithospheric structures previously identified by other researchers. The GRT images were calculated from the same P-to-S (Pds or Ps) teleseismic receiver functions (RFs) as the previous common conversion point (CCP) stacking, but the GRT data provide figures with greater resolution than the Pds RFs CCP results. This study indicates that the Alboran Slab may have completely detached from the crustal base under the western Betics Mountains and that a larger range of lithospheric 'peeling off' developed beneath the western part of the Betics Mountains than some previous results have claimed. The observed thin lithosphere under the Middle Atlas (MA) and eastern High Atlas (HA) may have a geodynamic relationship with lithospheric delamination under the eastern part of the Rif Mountains, which has also led to the thin lithosphere under the eastern Rif. According to the thick lithosphere under the western HA, the shallow LAB under the MA and eastern HA may have no heat-flow connection with the Canary mantle plume, as stated in several previous studies. The modes in which the lithosphere deforms during continental collision and the mechanisms involved are not well understood. While continental subduction and mantle delamination are often invoked in tectonophysical studies, these processes are difficult to be confirmed in more complex tectonic regions such as the Gibraltar Arc. We study the present‐day density and compositional structure of the lithosphere along a transect running from South Iberia to North Africa crossing the western Gibraltar Arc. This region is located in the westernmost continental segment of the African‐Eurasian plates, characterized by a diffuse transpressive plate boundary. An integrated and self‐consistent geophysical‐petrological methodology is used to model the lithosphere structure variations and the thermophysical properties of the upper mantle. The crustal structure is mainly constrained by seismic experiments and geological data, whereas the composition of the lithospheric mantle is constrained by xenolith data. The results show large lateral variations in the topography of the lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary. We distinguish different chemical lithospheric mantle domains that reproduce the main trends of the geophysical observables and the modeled P and S wave seismic velocities. A sublithospheric body colder than the surrounding mantle is needed beneath the Betics‐Rif to adjust the measured potential fields. We link this body to the Iberian slab localized just to the east of the profile and having some effect on the geoid and Bouguer anomalies. Local isostasy allows explaining most of the topography, but an elastic thickness higher than 10 km is needed to explain local misfits between the Atlas and the Rif Mountains. The High Atlas and the Anti Atlas are fold-belts linked to former and still ongoing continent–continent collisions. Despite their high elevation, studies indicate a lack of a deep crustal root (<40 km) while the lithosphere underneath is thinned (<100 km). Previous explanations for this thinning include asthenospheric upwelling due to small-scale convection or a small plume. We use data recorded at stations in SW Morocco to analyse teleseismic P- and S-wave receiver functions. Our study yields a crustal thickness ranging from 24 km near the Atlantic coast to 44 km beneath the High Atlas with an average crustal Vp/Vs ratio of 1.77 in the entire region. A crustal thickness of 40 km cannot entirely support the topography in this region. Furthermore, we find the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary at ∼80 km depth. The lithosphere beneath SW Morocco is thinner than beneath northern Morocco (>150 km). This lithospheric thinning supports the theory of thermal compensation of the mountain ranges. The mantle transition zone thickness amounts to 240 ± 10 km. The transition zone seems to be slightly thinned which might indicate a higher mantle temperature in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a very fast 1D method of integrated geophysical modelling, we calculated models of the Moho discontinuity and the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary in the Carpathian-Pannonian Basin region and its surrounding tectonic units. This method is capable to constrain complicated lithospheric structures by using joint interpretation of different geophysical data sets (geoid and topography) at the same time. The Moho depth map shows significant crustal thickness variations. The thickest crust is found underneath the Carpathian arc and its immediate Foredeep. High values are found in the Eastern Carpathians and Vrancea area (44 km). The thickest crust modelled in the Southern Carpathians is 42 km. The Dinarides crust is characterized by thicknesses more than 40 km. In the East European Platform, crust has a thickness of about 34 km. In the Apuseni Mountains, the depth of the Moho is about 36 km. The Pannonian Basin and the Moesian Platform have thinner crust than the surrounding areas. Here the crustal thicknesses are less than 30 km on average. The thinnest crust can be found in the SE part of the Pannonian Basin near the contact with the Southern Carpathians where it is only 26 km. The thickest lithosphere is placed in the East European Platform, Eastern Carpathians and Southern Carpathians. The East European Platform lithosphere thickness is on average more than 120 km. A strip of thicker lithosphere follows the Eastern Carpathians and its Foredeep, where the values reach in average 160 km. A lithosphere thickness minimum can be observed at the southern border of the Southern Carpathians and in the SE part of the Pannonian Basin. Here, it is only 60 km. The extremely low values of lithospheric thickness in this area were not shown before. The Moesian Platform is characterized by an E-W trend of lithospheric thickness decrease. In the East, the thickness is about 110 km and in the west it is only 80 km. The Pannonian Basin lithospheric thickness ranges from 80 to 100 km. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY The aim of this work is to propose a first-order estimate of the crustal and lithospheric mantle geometry of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone and to separate the measured Bouguer anomaly into its regional and local components. The crustal and lithospheric mantle structure is calculated from the geoid height and elevation data combined with thermal analysis. Our results show that Moho depth varies from ∼42 km at the Mesopotamian-Persian Gulf foreland basin to ∼60 km below the High Zagros. The lithosphere is thicker beneath the foreland basin (∼200 km) and thinner underneath the High Zagros and Central Iran (∼140 km). Most of this lithospheric mantle thinning is accommodated under the Zagros mountain belt coinciding with the suture between two different mantle domains on the Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone. The regional gravity field is obtained by calculating the gravimetric response of the 3-D crustal and lithospheric mantle structure obtained by combining elevation and geoid data. The calculated regional Bouguer anomaly differs noticeably from those obtained by filtering or just isostatic methods. The residual gravity anomaly, obtained by subtraction of the regional components to the measured field, is analyzed in terms of the dominating upper crustal structures. Deep basins and areas with salt deposits are characterized by negative values (∼−20 mGal), whereas the positive values are related to igneous and ophiolite complexes and shallow basement depths (∼20 mGal). Clinopyroxene is a major host for lithophile elements in the mantle lithosphere, and therefore it is critical whether we are to understand the constraints that this mineral puts on mantle evolution and melt generation. This study presents a detailed in situ trace element and Sr isotope study of clinopyroxene, amphibole and melt from two spinel lherzolites from the Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco. The results show that there is limited, but discernable, Sr isotopic variation between clinopyroxene crystals within these xenoliths [Sr/Sr ranging from 0.703416 (±11 2SE) to 0.703681 (±12 2SE)]. Trace element patterns show similar interelement fractionation with LREE enrichment, but there is a considerable range in terms of elemental concentration (e.g. over 100 ppm in Sr concentrations). Observed modal clinopyroxene is far more abundant than that predicted from estimates of melt depletion. This along with isotope and trace element variability found in these xenoliths supports a multistage metasomatic process in which clinopyroxene and amphibole are recent secondary additions to the lithospheric mantle. Elemental systematics indicate that the metasomatic mineral assemblage has most recently equilibrated with a carbonatitic melt prior to inclusion in the host basalt. The clinopyroxene from this study is typical of global off-craton clinopyroxene in terms of Sr isotope composition, suggesting that the majority of clinopyroxene in off-craton settings may have a recent metasomatic origin. These findings indicate that caution is required when using peridotite xenoliths to estimate the degree of elemental enrichment in the subcontinental lithosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
