Therefore, in this paper, industrial H2TiO3 is used as titanium source to prepare Li4Ti5O12 material. Fe2+ adsorbed by industrial H2TiO3 will be doped into the LTO lattice during the preparation process, resulting in a decrease in the electrochemical performance of LTO. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), regarded as a promising power sources, have been widely applied in both electric vehicle and large stationary power supplies. As the most appealing potential anode material, Lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12) used in LIBs offers the advantages of having negligible volume change, stable voltage plateau, relatively high theoretical capacity, high safety, and long operational life. However, a few shortages for Li4Ti5O12 battery applications are still remained, such as relatively low electronic conductivity and low tap density. Herein, an updated overview of the latest advances in Li4Ti5O12 research over the last 10 years is provided in in synthesis methods and modification methods for Li4Ti5O12-based anode materials. Additionally, recent progress of the synthesis of binder-free hybrid Li4Ti5O12 anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries is highlighted. Finally, future perspectives for further development of Li4Ti5O12-based electrodes also are pointed out from a scientific and an industrial point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, Li4Ti5O12 was prepared by high temperature solid-state method using titanium dioxide as titanium source and lithium carbonate as lithium source. The effects of lithium-titanium molar ratio, calcination temperature and sucrose as carbon source on the preparation of Li4Ti5O12 were studied. The experimental results show that when the molar ratio of lithium to titanium is 0.95 and the calcination temperature is 800 °C, pure phase Li4Ti5O12 can be prepared. The addition of sucrose carbon source effectively reduces the agglomeration of the product, making the particle size of the prepared lithium titanate sample about 1–2 microns. The first full specific capacity of pure lithium titanate is 160 mAh.g-1 at 0.1 C ratio and 123 mAh/g at 1 C ratio. After adding sucrose, the first charge-discharge specific capacity of lithium titanate was 168 mAh/g at 0.1 C ratio, 150 mAh/g at 1 C ratio, and the high specific capacity of lithium titanate with changed properties increased significantly after adding sucrose. The spinel type Li4Ti5O12 was prepared by high temperature solid-state reaction, using metatitanic acid and lithium titanate as raw materials, the influence of calcination temperature and time on the structure of the material was investigated. Li4Ti5O12 was used as raw material, and the carbon coating of Li4Ti5O12 was studied by adding glucose, the effect of temperature and time of the second calcination on the structure of the product was investigated. The structure was characterized by XRD. Selected the product with the highest C content for SEM, TEM, electrochemical performance testing. The results show that the product crystallized at a Li:Ti ratio of 0.85 and calcined at 750–800 °C for 6 h is crystallized and uniformly dispersed. The lithium titanate composite material with good dispersity, particle size of 1–5 μm and carbon content of 0.052% was successfully prepared under the conditions of 25% glucose and calcination at 750 °C for 2 h, the modified lithium titanate has a good charge-discharge capacity of more than 170 mAhg−1. Using metatitanic acid and lithium hydroxide as raw material, lithium ion battery cathode material Li4Ti5O12 was prepared by one step hydrothermal ion exchange synthesis method. The effects of molar ratio of Li and Ti, reaction temperature and reaction time were investigated respectively. The prepared lithium titanate was characterized by XRD and SEM for the structure and morphology and tested the battery performance through assembling the CR2016 lithium ion button battery. Experimental results showed that pure spinel type lithium titanate can be obtained when molar ratio of Li and Ti was 0.85, reaction temperature was 170°C࿵ E; 200°C after 24 h reaction, of which the diffraction peaks were one to one corresponding to diffraction peaks in the standard card (PDF#26-1198). The products were of good electrical properties, when the rate was 0.1C, the first charge/discharge capacity reached 165.2 mAh/g, the capacity retention rate was 97% after 30 charge/discharge cycles. • Photo-assisted sol–gel route was developed to prepare nanostructured Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anode. • UV irradiation process is effective to reduce grain size and modulate morphology. • Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 electrode treated with UV irradiation presents superb rate performance. Photo-assisted sol–gel route was developed to prepare nanostructured Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anode materials. Resulting Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 powders were characterized by phase analysis, microscopic morphology observation, and cyclic charge/discharge tests. As lithium-ion battery electrode, synthesized Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 material by using the photo-assisted sol–gel route shows specific capacity of 120 mAh g−1 at 10C discharge rate. Furthermore, this material retains 98% of its initial specific capacity at 0.2C after 50 charge/discharge measurements. Outstanding rate capability and cycling stability of this Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 material are mainly derived from grain refinement induced by ultraviolet photo-irradiation.
