2. Women's writing in the atlas of world literature: a case study of J. K. Rowling.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, world literature today does not refer to a fixed canon that is usually male-authored and West-centered. More and more excellent literary works written by extraordinary female writers and non-Western writers have been included in the anthologies of world literature, thus reforming the framework of world literature in a new sense. This essay attempts to reflect upon the developing situation of world literature in relation to women's writing. It first focuses on the issues of exclusion and inclusion of women writers in the canon formation and reformation of West-centric sense, showing that the changing process is a symptom of changes in the social relations between men and women. By enumerating how an authoritative Chinese journal World Literature absorbs more and more women writers' works in different cultural spaces, the author then talks about the national version of world literature to dismiss the past prevalent understanding that world literature is a fixed canon that circulates beyond national boundaries. Finally, by commenting on the international circulation of J. K. Rowling's works, the essay tries to prove how powerful nations may have better chance to distribute their cultural products. Abstract

This thesis focuses on the fantasy genre and its use in the work with children in free time. Based on the research of the popularity of the genre among young children I chose the novel about H. Potter as an inspiration for my project. The theoretical part mentions reading preferences survey among Czech children conducted in 2013 - 2014, which was implemented by the Librarianship Institute of the National Library of the Czech Republic. The thesis also includes findings about the genre preferences which the author verified in the Research Library of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. The theoretical part also contains a definition of the fantasy genre, brief introduction to the life and literary work of the author. The practical part presents a specific project and its verification in practice, which was inspired by H. Potter book. The project is focused on children aged 8-11 years and took place at the afterschool club of the Elementary School in Trhové Sviny. Finally, the thesis brings the final reflection and conclusion.

Abstract

Syftet med denna studie är att med fokus på miljöbeskrivningar undersöka den fantastiska berättelsens samspel med verkligheten utanför romanen. Den fantastiska berättelse som står i centrum för texttolkning och närläsning är Harry Potter och De vises sten skriven av J. K. Rowling (2001). Studien visar att Rowling bland annat använder sig av den realistiska verkligheten som inspiration där en realistisk verklighet ofta förändras genom fantastiska inslag. Vid ett flertal tillfällen i romanen är samspelet så intimt att många ting och detaljer i miljöskildringar likväl skulle kunna ha skildrats i en realistisk verklighet utanför romanen.
