In this article, the author discusses the situation of literary criticism in France in 2006. The author links professional criticism to newspapers and printed media. She describes the kinds of criticism published in dailies and other journals. The author concludes that the disciple is less credible and lacks confidence. Moreover, she indicates the interest of the public in novelties.

French literary history has been studied from a national perspective since the creation of the discipline in the late 19th century. But the focus on national literature has excluded literatures written in French outside France. Nowadays, important essays on French literary history are still centered on the literature of the Hexagon. Of course, 'Francophone' studies have been considering literatures of various Francophone areas, but they have often paid attention to the literary works and movements of specific territories, without placing them in relation with other literary works written in French. Studies of comparative literature and world literature have created models for studying interactions between different literatures. Some are focused on the diffusion of literature across the world; other examine how cultural phenomena in the colonial margins have influenced the metropoles or 'written back' to them; others analyze world literature in a relational or 'trans-area' perspective. After having reviewed such methodological approaches, this paper suggests a model based on the study of frontieres (i.e. "borders" and "boundaries") chosen as a "point of departure" (Auerbach) for setting up a fragmentary literary history which gives the same weight to the various literatures written in French in the 20th century. Written by Michel Cojot (a.k.a. Cojot-Goldberg), a hidden child, son of a deportee, would-be Nazi killer, and hostage during the 1976 Entebbe hijacking crisis, Écorché juif (1980) presents a post-Holocaust cautionary tale and a micro-historic guide to the second half of the twentieth century. It documents the twisting double binds of French Jews in the postwar period, the rise of modern terror, and new antisemitism. By the end of the 1970s, the progressive writing-into-history of French responsibility in the persecution of its Jews (in the works of Goldman, Modiano, Schwarz-Bart, and Joffo, among others) also coincided with new discourses of denial, and this at a time when the place of Jews in France was again being questioned, now more literally, in relation to the existence of Israel. This essay will show how the text's parodic inventory of French Jewish and national memory in films, books, and institutions simultaneously archives critical turning points in the postwar and postcolonial histories and literatures of France and French Jews. Symbolism had been a powerful literary movement that dominated French poetry in the second half of the 19th century. Symbolism was the poetry of disgusted and sometimes disillusioned idealists, who sought in poetry an escape from the ugliness, hypocrisy, and rapacity of 19th century industrialized society. To these poets, the newly triumphant bourgeois class lacked culture and taste and seemed to care only for useful inventions, facts, or material products and wealth. In contrast to this materialist, utilitarian, and practical view of the world, symbolist poetry emphasized an ideal world beyond the material, and sought an ideal language to express that world. Symbols are essentially words, which are not merely connotative but also evocative and emotive. In addition to their meaning, they also call up or evoke before the mind's eye a host of associations connected with them, and are rich in emotional significance. A symbol can be used to convey "pure sensation" or the poet's apprehension of transcendental mystery. It is by the use of symbols that the poet enriches the texture of his verse and reveals the full significance and deeper meaning of a particular situation, events and happenings. On the surface there, might be merely a plain and simple narration or description, and the poem may be enjoyed as such, but a careful reading reveals the hidden and deeper meaning. The aim of this article is to propose a comparison that will enlighten the things that occur between geographers and their fields. By operating a transfer between text and field on the one hand, and fieldwork and criticism on the other, I want to claim that some tools emanating from literary criticism can be used by geographers to construct their field as a reflexive object and to analyze the conditions of the production of geographical knowledge. My demonstration is based on the "Nouvelle critique" - i.e. the French structuralist criticism of the 1970s - and especially on Roland Barthes's famous article summing up his conception of text, entitled "Texte (theorie du)" (1975). The article presents a reprint of the article “Meaning in Mallarmé: Remarks on 'A la nue accablante tu...'” by Lloyd J. Austin, which appeared in the Volume 16, number 2, 1979 issue of the “Australian Journal of French Studies.” It explores the late nineteenth-century public discourse regarding the poems by French author Stéphane Mallarmé involving writers including Mallarmé, Russian author and critic Leo Tolstoy, and French journalist Henry Lapauze. A criticism of the poem "Un coup de dés," by Mallarmé, is also presented.

The flâneur has remained little more than a hazy, nostalgic figure since first described in detail by Baudelaire in 19th-century Paris. Here, the work of Walter Benjamin, who did more than any other to advance the notion of flânerie post-Baudelaire, is considered alongside that of his friend and critic Theodor Adorno, in an attempt to conceive of a modern-day version of the type. The many critical exchanges between Adorno and Benjamin are envisioned as a moving dialectic: a constant interplay between anticipation and suspicion. What results is a concept of flânerie that mingles a tentatively optimistic Benjamin with a perpetually sceptical Adorno, in order to conjure up an image of the individual strolling and wandering about the margins of contemporary urbanity, balanced on the cusp of hope and hopelessness. Among the best-selling French literary works of the twentieth century, Vercors' novella has enjoyed an exceptionally rich afterlife thanks to numerous print editions as well as several influential stage and screen adaptations: Jean-Pierre Melville's 1947 feature film, Jean Mercure's 1949 play, Vercors' own 1978 theatrical rendering, and a 2004 television movie written by Anne Giafferi and directed by Pierre Boutron. Taking a comparative approach that weighs the aesthetic and ideological priorities of these authors and directors alongside shifts in historiography and French political culture, this article traces the evolution of Le Silence de la mer as a contested site of national memory and a means of negotiating the ethically-charged concepts of collaboration and resistance. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917, many Russian writers including Ivan Bunin (1870-1953) and Nadezhda Teffi (1872-1952) immigrated to France. Their works were imbued with longing for the bygone epoch and for their lost motherland. In Russian émigré literature, this nostalgic outlook produced the mythology of the Belle Époque as the period of prosperity and social harmony. This romanticized view of the past became integrated in the political and intellectual discourses of two influential French writers, Romain Gary (1914-1980) and Elsa Triolet (1896-1970). The article addresses how Russian nostalgia for a pre-1917 period paved the way for the rise of the myth of the Belle Époque, a myth that became increasingly influential in twentieth-century French history. In the last half of the nineteenth century, the folding fan was phenomenally popular in France. The accessory was a ubiquitous component of women's dress, yet it also attracted the attention of some prominent collectors and Orientalists as well as acquiring an importance in the art and literature of the period. In many plastic works and literary texts devoted to it, the fan retains a link with femininity, and particularly with feminine sexuality, even as its identity as an art object is emphasized. Octave Uzanne's L'Éventail (1882), a self-professed literary history of the fan, exemplifies this dualistic treatment as it presents the fan both as a titillating intimate companion of women and as a literary and (although to a lesser extent) art historical subject. This article focuses on Uzanne's treatment of the fan's early history in the Far and Middle East. By comparing his text with other contemporary histories of the fan, it demonstrates that the 'history' of the accessory may be more accurately described as a mythology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author explores the concept of medieval festive space within Mercier's writing, examines his portrayal of social justice within pre-revolutionary Paris, and analyzes his beliefs of religious demoralization and his critiques of Catholic rituals.

The article discusses how sermons were one of the few ways available to publicly present criticisms of the monarchy in seventeenth century France, focusing particularly on the 1662 published sermon entitled "Sermon sur la prédication évangélique" by Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, French bishop and preacher to King Louis XIV of France. The author considers Bossuet's use of rhetoric and analyzes his techniques which allowed him to safely criticize the king. Other subjects include absolutism during the ancient regime of France, censors and censorship laws during the period, and the use of flattery as a rhetorical device.

The article presents a literary criticism on the idea of ghetto presented in the book "Urban Outcasts" by Loïc Wacquant in the U.S. and France. According to the author, the four principal characteristics of the ghetto is low safety, low quality and low density. He added that the book does not offer evidence from other cities to document that black urban ghettos elsewhere are as organizationally deprived as those of Chicago.

Nicole Rizzuto's work is important because it builds bridges. The debate between feminism and ‘theory’ remains unresolved. It still emerges on more fronts than we can count. This is Rizzuto's first bridge. Her work is plangent with feminism. Nothing of it is compromised by her theoretical commitment. In literary criticism, gender is still often kept separate from what one might call hard politics. It is as if only boys can conjure with ‘danger’ to ‘Throne and Altar,’ as Freud writes, having fetishized a phallus for the mother. Here, too, Rizzuto crosses over and re-crosses. This short piece gives us a glimpse when it mentions ‘the death of [Sarah Kofman's] father at the hands of the state.’ In the dissertation, this is expanded into the abyssal implications of the vicissitudes of the fetish when both Throne and Altar fail the father. What makes such speculation urgent is that the task, of coping with such a profound disturbance of what Freud would perceive as the ‘natural’ order of the polity, falls to the daughter. Subject-formation, then, as well as socio-political agency. The very matter of testimony. Here is another vista of bridges that Rizzuto traverses. Testimony and autobiography, of course; but also the bridge between the twentieth and nineteenth centuries, men and women, Europe and the United States. Over against Kofman stands the grand figure of the Melville of ‘Benito Cereno.’ The dissertation - ‘Literature and Testimony’ - and subsequently the book, will give us the entire landscape. Nicole Rizzuto holds an M.A. from the Brown University Modern Culture and Media Program. This response to William Philpott's 'Why the British Were Really on the Somme' (War in History xi, 4) underlines Philpott's failure to take adequate account of French sources, dismisses his long defence of Kitchener as beside the point and views his 'strategic paradox' as no more convincing for its reiteration. His 'seven types of success', offered as an alternative to my judgement that the 1916 battle of the Somme was a failure, are demonstrated to be fragile, nugatory and unsubstantiated.
