This article examines some aspects underlying the formation process of the early Petrine military elite referring to the careers of three military leaders who advanced to higher positions in the late seventeenth century (A. S. Shein, B. P. Sheremetev, and Prince Ya. F. Dolgorukov). They were almost the same age, their starting positions were comparable, and they climbed up the career ladder in voivodeship traditional for the aristocracy differently, depending on the circumstances and the political situation that seriously affected their careers. Referring to a considerable amount of new archival material and synthesising the latest historiographic information, the author demonstrates the influence of the political crisis of 1682 on their career trajectories. Also, the author examines the differences in their life paths at the initial stage of the Russian-Turkish war of 1686–1700, the acquisition of diplomatic experience by B. P. Sheremetev and Ya. F. Dolgorukov during these years; and their participation in the Azov campaigns. The author reveals the uneven nature of Ya. F. Dolgorukov’s career, as he received the boyar rank much later than his younger colleagues. The author notes not only the commanding but also the outstanding administrative merits of the voivodes, whose appearance as part of the military-political elite was, among other things, a reflection of the objective process of a generational change. The author concludes that the most significant step in their acquisition of military leadership and the military organisational experience was the leadership of the Belgorod razryad – the largest unit of Russia’s field army in the second half of the seventeenth century and the most significant military administrative district, most closely involved in the “great wars” of Russia in the second half of the seventeenth century.

The author examines issues connected with the expansion of European influence on the Russian elite in the late 17th century with reference to Tsar Peter I. Describing the early stages of the foreign influence on Peter the Great, the author argues that Peter’s Europeanisation became noticeable a lot later than was previously thought (i. e., when he was turning into a young man and after the dynastic crisis of 1689). An analysis of concomitant events contradicts the stereotypes still present in popular books on the history of the period, according to which the young ruler’s outlook was formed under the influence of Franz Lefort and Patrick Gordon. They were favourites of V. V. Golitsyn, a leader of a long-lived group in opposition to Peter I. As a result of this (and also because of their status as foreign officers completely dependent on the state), they did not seek any closer contacts with the young tsar. It was only after the dynastic crisis ended well for Peter I in 1689 that there was a turning point in their relationship with the tsar. Due to these factors, the first signs of the Europeanisation of Peter’s everyday life became noticeable at around this time: this can be seen in changes to his clothing and in his behaviour., Рассматриваются проблемы распространения европейского влияния в среде русской элиты в конце XVII в. на примере европеизации ее главы – русского царя Петра I. Автор, характеризуя ранние этапы «иноземного» влияния на царя, приходит к выводу, что заметная внешне европеизация Петра началась позднее, чем это обычно представлялось, – лишь на грани его юности и молодости, после династического кризиса 1689 г. Анализ связанных с этим событий не подтверждает все еще распространенного в популярных изданиях стереотипного представления о раннем влиянии на молодого государя Франца Лефорта и Патрика Гордона, которые долгое время были фаворитами В. В. Голицына (одного из лидеров оппозиционной Петру I группировки), и в силу этого, а также в силу особенностей их карьеры и положения как представителей целиком зависимого от государства слоя иноземного офицерства отнюдь не стремились к сближению с молодым царем. Лишь благополучный для царя исход династического кризиса в сентябре 1689 г. стал поворотным пунктом в их отношениях с государем и привел к стремительному сближению с ним, а также к ставшему его следствием началу заметной именно с этого времени европеизации быта Петра, которая прослеживается автором по материалам, свидетельствующим об изменениях в его одежде и поведении.

The article explores the problems underlying the formation of the Officer Corps in 17th-century Russia and how the process was influenced by the financial situation of the time, war reforms, and the Russo-Polish War of 1654–1667. The author focuses on the influence that the military and currency reforms of 1654 as well as the counter-monetary reform of 1663 had on the state and prospects for the development of the Europeanized Officer Corps of the ‘new order’ regiments. Additionally, the article studies the appearance of a record of military forces in 1663, an important source on the history of the 17th-century Russian army. Officers’ careers are analyzed by referring to Patrick Gordon’s biography at its initial stage. The author concludes that financial problems, affecting the officers’ salaries, contributed to creating a low social status for new-order officers in the eyes of the Russian elite for a long time (until the early 18th century), which, in turn, impeded the development of the National Officer Corps. It was only Peter the Great who managed to solve the problem., Исследуются проблемы формирования офицерского корпуса в России XVII в. и влияние на этот процесс финансовой ситуации, военных реформ и хода русско-польской войны 1654–1667 гг. Актуализируется изучение процесса воздействия военной реформы, денежной реформы 1654 г. и ликвидирующей ее «контрреформы» 1663 г. на состояние и перспективы развития европеизированного офицерского корпуса полков «нового строя». Также рассматриваются условия появления «сметы воинских сил 1663 г.» – одного из важнейших источников по истории русской армии XVII в. В качестве примера офицерской карьеры приводятся сведения о биографии Патрика Гордона на начальном этапе его карьеры. Делается вывод, что финансовые проблемы, повлиявшие на условия выплаты офицерского жалования, стали одним из важнейших факторов, которые закрепили низкий социальный статус офицерства «новой армии» в восприятии русской дворянской элиты и надолго (до начала XVIII в.) затормозили процесс формирования русского национального офицерского корпуса. Эту проблему удалось решить лишь Петру I.
