This work studied the effect of age at photostimulation on reproductive performance of Beijing-You Chicken (BYC) breeders. A total of 384 fourteen-week-old BYC breeder hens were randomly allocated to 4 treatments of 96 birds each, with 2 replicates per treatment. The treatments represent photostimulation at 16, 18, 20, and 22 wk of age, respectively (PS16, PS18, PS20, and PS22) by incrementally increasing day length from 8L:16D to 14L:10D and by increasing lighting intensity from 10 to 80 lx. Egg production was recorded for each replicate until 51 wk. Four birds randomly selected from each treatment were sacrificed to characterize sexual organ development at 4 time points: 1 D before photostimulation and 2, 4, and 6 wk after photostimulation. Eggshell quality at peak laying was measured. The results showed that the changes in ovary and oviduct weight in PS22 were 8.68- and 4.27-fold higher than in PS16 at 6 wk after photostimulation. PS16 had an earlier age at 5% egg production than PS20 and PS22 (P = 0.003). The interval from photostimulation to age at 5% egg production in PS20 and PS22 was shorter than in other treatments (P = 0.005). Later peak egg production was seen in PS20 (211.0 D) and PS22 (218.0 D) than in PS16 (183.0 D) and PS18 (190.0 D, P = 0.020), but the laying rate of PS20 decreased slowly after peak laying. PS20 and PS22 had higher egg weights than PS16 and PS18 at peak laying (P = 0.018). Age at photostimulation had no effect on egg number, defective egg number, or hatchability (P > 0.05). In summary, the onset of lay can be advanced by photostimulation at early ages, but there is no difference on egg production until 51 wk. Background: Through scientific literature, there is evidence that light affects thyroid function in human, mice and rabbits. Constant light and sleep deprivation is also used as a form of human torture, as it has impact on cognitive performances. The present work was conducted to study the effect of constant light for short and long periods on the thyroid gland in the prepubertal male albino rats., Materials and Methods: A total of 30 prepubertal male albino rats were used. The rats separated into three groups: group I (control); group II were those rats put under steady encompassing light (24 h/day, light intensity of 600 lux) for 4 weeks; and group III were the rats maintained in constant light for 3 months. The rat thyroid gland was subjected to histological and ultrastructural examination., Results: The rats exposed to light for long durations showed disturbed architecture; the follicles exhibited back to back arrangement (signs of hypertrophy with hyperplasia), lined by multiple layers of follicular cells or were lined by vacuolated cells. Few thyroid follicles exhibited cystic hyperplasia. Congested blood capillaries were demonstrated between the follicles., Conclusions: It can be concluded that the short-term exposure to constant light for 1 month had no apparent effect on thyroid gland tissues while longer exposure to light for 3 months had detrimental effects on the thyroid gland structure of male albino rats.

Artificial lights are essential for controlling the reproductive tract development of birds during puberty and therefore influence reproductive quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different light sources on reproductive anatomic and physiological characteristics of female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). A total of 270 birds from one day of age were housed in a masonry shed divided into six rooms with light isolation. Each room was equipped with a different type of light bulb and contained seven cages with five birds in each. The light bulbs tested were: incandescent; compact fluorescent; and light-emitting diode (LED) in the colors white, blue, red and green. The experimental design was completely randomized with six treatments and seven replications of individual birds each. The anatomic and physiological condition of the birds was evaluated at four, eight and 12 weeks of age. The white LED bulb advanced (P<0.05) the sexual maturity by one week, resulted (P<0.05) in higher live weights and greater weight and relative percentage of ovarian stroma, oviduct and ovarian tissue at eight weeks of age. Higher plasma concentrations of estradiol and lipids were also observed (P<0.05) at eight weeks under the white LED bulb. At 12 weeks of age, the magnum and isthmus folding characteristics were better (P<0.05) with the red LED bulb. In conclusion, the photostimulation with the white LED bulb was more efficient at activating the reproductive cycle, hastening the onset of sexual maturity and increasing the development of reproductive organs after puberty., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. The present study investigated the effects of exposure to different light spectra and intensities on ovarian maturation in yellowtail damselfish, Chrysiptera parasema over a 4-months period. We used a white fluorescent bulb and three different light-emitting diodes (LEDs: red, peak at 630nm; green, 530nm; blue, 450nm), at three different intensities each (0.3, 0.6, and 0.9W/m(2)). The effects of different illuminations were assessed by measuring the mRNA and protein expressions of vitellogenin (VTG) and estrogen receptor (ER), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and plasma estradiol-17β (E2) hormone level. For green and blue lights, significantly higher levels of VTG and ER expressions, GSI, and plasma E2 were obtained, compared to the other light spectra. Histological analysis revealed the presence of vitellogenic oocytes in fish exposed to short wavelengths (green and blue) light. In addition, we observed significantly greater ovarian maturation in fish exposed to low and medium light intensities. The results indicate that exposure to green low intensity lighting accelerates gonadal maturation, and is likely to facilitate development of more energy-efficient aquaculture procedures., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Terrestrial slugs (Lehmannia valentiana) collected from a field in Osaka, southwestern Japan, were reared under long-day (16-h light and 8-h darkness, LD 16:8) or short-day conditions (LD 12:12) at 15, 20, or 25 degrees C for 60 days. Slugs reared under short-day conditions were heavier than those reared under long-day conditions; however, slugs reared at 15 degrees C gained more weight regardless of the photoperiodic condition. Gonads were significantly heavier under short-day conditions than under long-day conditions, and oogenesis and spermatogenesis were also induced under short-day conditions. Under short-day conditions, reproductive maturation was suppressed at 25 degrees C as compared with 15 and 20 degrees C, whereas under long-day conditions, lower temperatures induced reproductive maturation. In contrast, slugs reared under short-day conditions at 20 degrees C from the time of hatching gained more weight than those reared under long-day conditions at the same temperature. Moreover, short-day conditions induced reproductive maturation, similar to that observed in the field-collected slugs. In conclusion, short-day and low-temperature conditions promoted growth and reproductive maturation, whereas long-day and high-temperature conditions suppressed them in L. valentiana. Thus, L. valentiana reproduces from late autumn to spring in Osaka.

1. Brown-egg pullets were reared on 8-h photoperiods and temporarily transferred at 80 d of age to 14-h photoperiods for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 d. Controls were either maintained on 8 h or permanently transferred to 14 h at 80 d. 2. Pullets given 8 or 12 long days matured 8-9 d earlier than constant 8-h controls, but 22-23 d later than pullets transferred permanently to long days. Mean age at first egg for the groups given 2, 4, 6 or 10 d of 14-h days were not significantly different from the 8-h controls. The mean weight of first egg and body weight at first egg for the temporarily-photostimulated groups were not significantly different from constant 8-h controls, but egg weights were > or = 5.1 g and body weights at first egg > or = 200 g heavier than the birds transferred permanently to 14 h. 3. It is concluded that up to 6 temporary long days may be given (from 80 d of age) without affecting the timing of sexual maturity, but that the provision of 8 or more long days will accelerate sexual development, thought not to the extent of a permanent transfer, in most birds within a flock. A regression analysis of the ages at which the first and last birds in the groups given 6, 8, 10 or 12 long days matured suggested that about 20 d of photostimulation are required to achieve a mean age at first egg similar to that of birds permanently transferred to long days.

1. Shaver White and ISA Brown pullets were reared to 140 d in cage groups of 8 on a 10-h photoperiod of incandescent light and maintained at an illuminance of 3 or 25 lux, or transferred from 3 to 25 lux or from 25 to 3 lux at 63 or 112 d of age. 2. Plasma follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentration at 63 and 112 d was higher in both breeds for pullets maintained at an illuminance of 25 lux compared with 3 lux. After 2-4 d, and relative to constant-illuminance controls, plasma FSH increased significantly for ISA Brown transferred from 3 to 25 lux at 63 d and for Shaver White transferred at 112 d. Irrespective of genotype, plasma FSH for pullets given a decrease in illuminance at 63 or 112 d showed a tendency for less change than did constant-illuminance controls. 3. There was no significant difference in sexual maturity for ISA Brown maintained on 3 or 25 lux, but Shaver White pullets exposed to constant 3 lux matured later than those maintained on 25 lux. Shaver White matured later following an increase from 3 to 25 lux at 63 and 112 d, and earlier subsequent to a decrease from 25 to 3 lux at 112 d. ISA Brown pullets were not significantly affected by a change in illuminance at 63 or 112 d, though their responses were in the same direction as Shaver White. 4. Changes in plasma FSH in the 2- to 4-d period following a change in illuminance at 63 or 112 d were not significantly correlated with sexual maturity.

There are two effects of long day length on reproductive responses in birds, one is the photoinduction of gonadal growth and maturation and the other is the induction of gonadal regression and photorefractoriness. Although it is likely that the same photoreceptors are involved in the photoinduction of gonadal growth and the onset and maintenance of photorefractoriness. and so the influence of wavelength should be similar, this has not been investigated. Therefore, we investigated the influence of light wavelength on reproductive photorefractoriness in the migratory male blackheaded bunting held under long photoperiods. In mid May, when photoperiod was approximately 14L:10D (14 hours light:10 hours darkness), eight groups of sexually mature birds were moved indoors on an artificial photoperiod of 14L:10D (L - 450 lux. D - 0 lux). Then after 3 weeks, for six groups, a 4-h light period in the morning (zt 0-4; zt 0 [zeitgeber time 0] refers to the beginning of lights-on period) or in the evening (zt 10-14) was substituted with green (428 nm), red (654 nm) or white light at 16 +/- 2 lux intensity. Of the remaining two groups, one was maintained on 14L: 10D and the other transferred to 10L:14D: these served as controls. At the end of 4 weeks, all birds were found to have undergone testicular regression, irrespective of LD cycle they were exposed to. When these gonadally regressed birds were subjected to 16L:8D for another 4 weeks, to test their responsiveness to the stimulatory effects of long day lengths, only those exposed to 10L:14D and 14L:10D with a 4-h green light period showed testicular regrowth. On the other hand, birds exposed to 14L:10D with a 4-h white or red light period remained fully regressed, similar to 14L:10D controls. Except for some individual difference, there was no difference in response between the groups that received a 4-h light period in the morning and that received it in the evening. These results suggest that the wavelengths of light influence induction of buntings from the photosensitive state into the photorefractory state. Whereas the short light wavelengths facilitated recovery from the photorefractoriness, the long light wavelengths were more effective in maintaining the photorefractoriness.

A major obstacle in modern, intensive aquaculture is the precocious maturation of male fish, leading to decreased somatic growth and reduced filet quality. Effects of photoperiod on sexual maturation and growth in male Atlantic halibut were therefore examined. In June 1996, 1300 1+ fish of both sexes were distributed in two indoor tanks supplied with continuous light (LL) or a simulated natural photoperiod (SNP). In December 1996 and June 1997, 200 individuals were exchanged between the tanks creating six experimental groups that were followed until June 1998. LL stimulated growth and accelerated timing of first maturation by approximately 3 months. LL also appeared to interrupt circannual rhythmicity in sexual maturation. Sexual maturation led to reduced growth from 3 months pre-spawning and throughout the spawning season. Males that did not mature during the experiment attained the highest final body weight. All males reared on LL from June 1997 reached sexual maturity the following season. In contrast, only 26% of the males matured in the group transferred from LL to SNP in June 1997, and this group also had the highest final body weight. The results indicate a possible route for reducing the problem of precocious maturation in male halibut.

1. ISA Brown pullets were transferred from 8 to 14 h or from 14 to 8 h photoperiods at 35 or 56 d of age. Controls were maintained on constant 8 or 14 h photoperiods from day 1. 2. Blood samples were obtained immediately before each daylength change and subsequently at 7 d intervals until 1st egg in the treated groups and at 70 d of age and then at 14 d intervals until 1st egg in the constant photoperiod controls. Plasma luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations were determined using homologous radioimmunoassays. 3. Prior to 16 weeks, LH was consistently higher in birds on constant 14 h photoperiods than in those on constant 8 h, but was down-regulated as birds approached maturity so that LH concentrations in the 2 groups were similar during the final 10 d before the first egg was laid. FISH concentrations rose steadily with age but with a tendency for concentrations to be higher in the 8 h than in the 14 h treatment. Birds on constant 8 h daylengths matured 18.3 d later than those on constant 14 h photoperiods. 4. A 6 h increment in photoperiod given at 35 d or 56 d, resulted in an increase in LH within 7 d in both cases. FSH concentration did not respond to an increase in photoperiod at 35 d but rose following the same increase at 56 d. This was associated with a 3-week advance in sexual maturity, whilst age at 1st egg in birds photostimulated at 35 d was similar to the age with a constant 14 h photoperiod. 5. LH concentration fell when photoperiod was reduced from 14 to 8 h at either 35 or 56 d and remained below the constant 8 h controls for many weeks before rising to a concentration not significantly different from other groups in the final 10 d before 1st egg. FSH concentrations in birds exposed to a decreased daylength at 35 d, although more oscillatory, were similar to the constant 8 h photoperiod controls. In birds exposed to the same decrease at 56 d, FSH concentration initially tumbled but was similar in the 2 groups during the latter stages of rearing; neither differed significantly from the constant daylength controls during the 60 d before 1st egg. Sexual maturity in both groups given a reduction in photoperiod was delayed by about 2 weeks compared with constant 8 h controls. 6. Change in FSH concentration following an increase in daylength was a better predictor of age at 1st egg than change in LH. However, FSH concentrations after 14 weeks of age were rather similar in short day and long day controls and in the 2 groups given reductions in photoperiod at 35 d and 56 d, despite differences of nearly 5 weeks in mean age at 1st egg amongst these 4 treatments.

Two experiments were conducted to determine whether oral administration of melatonin alters the onset of puberty in gilts during naturally increasing or decreasing daylength. In Exp. 1, 20 crossbred prepubertal gilts weighing 77.5 +/- .5 kg at 171.8 +/- 1.0 d of age were assigned randomly to receive either a daily oral dose of 3 mg of melatonin (MEL) or ethanol vehicle (ETH) at 1530 from August 31 to December 1, 1987 (decreasing daylength). Gilts were exposed to mature boars for 20 min thrice weekly and blood samples were collected twice weekly. Serum concentrations of progesterone were used to establish age at puberty and length of estrous cycle. In Exp. 2, 20 crossbred prepubertal gilts weighing 67.7 +/- .7 kg at 143.8 +/- 1.1 d of age received either MEL or ETH treatment from February 1 to May 15, 1988 (increasing daylength). Age of puberty was less in gilts that received MEL than in gilts that received ETH in both Exp. 1 (198 +/- 3 vs 228 +/- 7 d; P less than .01) and Exp. 2 (183.8 +/- 2.7 d vs 194.3 +/- 3.3 d; P less than .05). Gilts that received MEL reached puberty at a lighter weight than gilts that received ETH in Exp. 1 (95.6 +/- 2.1 vs 112.4 +/- 3.9 kg; P less than .01) and Exp. 2 (88.1 +/- 1.5 vs 96.0 +/- 1.8 kg; P less than .01). Serum concentrations of LH and FSH, length of estrous cycles, and percentage of muscle of carcasses were similar between MEL and ETH gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Seventy-six New Zealand white does born between June 28, 1979 and April 6, 1980 were used in an experiment of 2 X 2 X 2 factorial design to determine if 1) exposure to 18 h (L) or 6 h (D) of light/d beginning at weaning influenced age and body weight at puberty and 2) if mating and(or) hormone treatment at puberty influenced ovulation rate and number of embryos. Beginning at weaning, estrus was checked daily using males known to be fertile. At first expression of estrus, does were either mated or nonmated and were injected iv with either 30 IU human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), or saline. Means for the L and D groups for age at puberty (d), body weight at puberty (kg), ovarian weight (g) and number of embryos 5 d postcoitus were 105 +/- 3.6 vs 121.9 +/- 4.1 (P less than .01); 2.65 +/- .07 vs 2.87 +/- .08 (P less than .05); .56 +/- .04 vs .78 +/- .04 (P less than .001) and 6.1 +/- .83 vs 3.44 +/- .67 (P less than .01), respectively. Photoperiod did not influence number of ovulations. Number of embryos relative to number of ovulations were higher in rabbits exposed to 18 h of light. Does that were both mated and hormone-treated had more (P less than .025) corpora lutea (11.0 +/- .9) than does that were either hormone-treated (7.7 +/- .86) or mated (7.0 +/- .97) only. Mated does had heavier uteri (10.8 +/- .5 vs 7.9 +/- .5) while hormone treatment increased both ovarian and uterine weights (g) over nontreated does (.74 +/- .04 vs .59 +/- .05; 9.9 +/- .45 vs 8.8 +/- .65). Multiple regression analysis revealed that does born in summer reached puberty later than those born during other seasons. It was concluded that season of birth and exposure of does to 18 h of light from weaning affect onset of puberty. Increasing daily light exposure from 6 to 18 h/d may improve litter size in pubertal does.

Pubertal development in female deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, was stimulated by exposure to light cycles of LD 16:8, LD 6:30 or LD 6:54, but not by exposure to cycles of LD 6:18 or LD 6:42. These results support the hypothesis that female deer mice use a circadian rhythm of responsiveness to light to measure photoperiodic time.

Four experiments were designed to investigate the influence of photoperiod and other environmental factors on androgen production and reproductive maturation in deer mice. Male prairie deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), born in a light/dark cycle of 6L:18D, either remained in this short photoperiod or were switched to a long day regimen of 16L:8D at weaning. In a cross-sectional experiment, the deer mice were killed between 3 and 8 weeks of age for measurement of serum testosterone concentration and reproductive organ weights. In a second experiment, blood was collected from each mouse at weekly intervals between 3 and 9 weeks of age. This repeated measures design was used to reduce the high variability in testosterone values observed in the first experiment. Reproductive organs were weighed at the termination of the experiment. Testosterone concentrations and reproductive organ weights were greater in males reared in the long photoperiod in both experiments. In a third experiment, the animals were housed under five different conditions to test the influence of high ambient temperature and melatonin as well as photoperiod. At 7 weeks of age, they received an injection of hCG or saline. More testosterone was released in deer mice reared in 16L:8D and 27 C than in those reared in short days (6L:18D) or those reared in high ambient temperature (35 C) or those treated with exogenous melatonin. One week later, animals were sacrificed. The single hCG treatment caused significant reversal of the suppression of accessory sex organ weights following melatonin, short days or 35 C temperature. In a fourth experiment, the additive influence of melatonin and 35 C temperature was tested. Animals treated with 35 C or both melatonin and 35 C had lower serum testosterone at 7 weeks of age, released less testosterone after hCG, and had smaller organ weights with or without hCG than long day controls. The influence of melatonin treatment and 35 C temperature appears to be additive for testicular weight and testosterone release after hCG. Thus, the attenuation of reproductive development that accompanied short days, melatonin treatment and high ambient temperature occurred via diminished testosterone secretion, which can be overcome at least in part by gonadotropin treatment.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether exposure to a cycle of light and dark before the onset of the adrenal rhythm would be necessary in order for rats to develop a normal rhythm of peripheral corticosterone when placed in a test photoperiod at weaning age. Rats were reared in constant light (LL) until weaning age, at which time they were placed in a cycle of 14 h light, 10 h dark (14:10). Females born and reared in 14:10 had peak corticosterone values at 14.00 h on days 22 and 26, and at 18.00 h on days 32 and 36. Males did not display a clear-cut rhythm at 22 or 26 days but had peak corticosterone at 18.00 h on days 32 and 36. Males and females reared in LL until weaning had no rhythm as a group in 14:10 at 24 days of age, but had a corticosterone peak at 18.00 h on days 28 and 40. Females born and reared in LL and exposed to 14:10 for 1 day developed an adrenal rhythm regardless of the age at exposure, but only 25 day old animals showed a normal pattern for their age group. Puberty was advanced in rats exposed to a single day of 14:10 at 25 days of age, but was delayed in younger rats (22 days old), and was unaffected by light exposure in older rats (28 days of age). It can be concluded that early exposure to light-dark cycles is not required for the normal development of an adrenal rhythm in the weanling rat, and that the setting of the corticosterone rhythm to the photoperiod can occur quite rapidly. Rats at 25-26 days of age are able to respond differently to a light cycle challenge than younger rats. A photoperiodic stimulus at that time can advance the onset of puberty.

Female deer mice were exposed to a short day (SD, 6L:18D) photoperiod beginning during 1 of 3 stages of life. In the first experiment, exposure to SD during adulthood resulted in a minimal disruption of reproductive condition; many females bore 2 litters after the onset of this treatment. In the second experiment, females reared on SD from weaning matured normally, as measured by vaginal introitus; however, vaginal closure occurred in approximately one-half of these females by 9 weeks of age. In the third experiment, females were born of mothers housed on either an SD or a long day photoperiod, and were continued on the maternal photoperiod until 6 weeks of postnatal age. The SD photoperiod markedly inhibited reproductive maturation as measured by vaginal patency, ovarian weight, and uterine weight. A comparison of reproductive organ weights and vaginal condition provided evidence for the validity of the latter measure as an index of reproductive state. As assayed by the present testing procedure, the sensitivity of the reproductive system to photoperiod decreases as a function of age in female deer mice.

Photoperiod is an important environmental cue timing puberty in the domestic female sheep, a seasonal breeder. Because the effects of photoperiod on reproductive function in the adult sheep are mediated by the pineal melatonin rhythm, the present study determined whether the pineal through its secretion of melatonin is involved in the pubertal process. Neonatal denervation of the pineal by removal of the superior cervical ganglia (SGX) abolished the nocturnal melatonin rhythm and delayed the onset of reproductive cycles beyond 1 yr of age in female lambs reared under natural conditions. Puberty was also delayed in SGX lambs reared under an artificial photoperiod sequence of long days (experienced at 17-22 weeks of age) followed by short days. By comparison, intact lambs under this same photoperiod treatment began cycles at the normal age. Another group of SGX lambs was treated each night with melatonin; the infusion replicated the duration of the nighttime rise in serum melatonin occurring in intact lambs exposed to 5 weeks of long days followed by short days (9-h or 15-h infusions, respectively). Melatonin treatment of these SGX lambs restored puberty to the normal age. These findings suggest that the pineal melatonin rhythm is an essential component of the photoperiodic mechanism timing puberty in the female sheep.
