Straipsnyje, remiantis pastaruoju metu gausiai leidžiamu memuarinės literatūros segmentu, apžvelgiama, kaip Klaipėdos krašto gyventojai - lietuvininkai ir vokiečiai - suvokia tautiškumą bei religiją, kokiais kriterijais vadovaujantis save priskiria vienai ar kitai tautinei ir konfesinei grupei. Apžvelgiami nauji šaltiniai ir esami istoriografijos darbai, akcentuojami ekonominiai, kultūriniai, religiniai skirtumai, kurie XIX a. pabaigoje - XX a. pirmojoje pusėje lėmė lietuviškosios savivokos sampratos skirtumus Didžiojoje ir Prūsų Lietuvoje. Tiriama, kaip tautiškumo suvokimas priklauso nuo kultūrinio ir religinio konteksto. Nustatyta, kad net ir tos pačios tautos, gyvenusios skirtingomis politinėmis bei religinėmis aplinkybėmis, atstovai, siekdami bendro tikslo, būdus tam tikslui pasiekti gali rinktis visiškai skirtingus.

[...] The aim of the article is to reveal the relations between Lithuanian Germans and Lithuanian Evangelical Lutherans from 1918 to 1940. Abundant archival data, which for the most part is kept in the Lithuanian State Central Archives (LSCA), helped to reveal the topic under discussion. The data stored at the fund of the State Security Department (f. 378) of the said archives (monthly reviews and reports prepared by the political police) on the activities of Germans residing in Lithuania is especially valuable. The documents kept at the fund of the Ministry of Interior (f. 377) and other funds of the archives, as well as periodical press of that time were also used. According to the Lithuanian census of 1923, the religious distribution of local Germans (excluding those from Klaipėda Region), whose population at that time amounted to 29,231, was as follows: Roman Catholics – 207, Jews – 1, Evangelical Lutherans – 28,671 (it accounted for as much as 98.08 % of the total Lithuanian German population), Orthodox – 26, Evangelical Reformers – 212, Baptists – 48, Evangelical Methodists – 43, Free Evangelicals – 18, non-believers – 1, Adventists – 4. This census revealed that the counties of Tauragė, Vilkaviškis, Šiauliai, Kaunas, Šakiai, Marijampolė, Biržai were the largest centres of Evangelical Reformers in Lithuania. The research revealed that in the first decade of independence the domination of Germans in the Lithuanian Evangelical community was determined by the leading positions held for a long time by the representatives of this nationality in the Church of the Evangelical community of the country and the monopoly held by German Evangelical Lutheran priests in preaching the doctrine to believers (in the first years of independence the numbers of Lithuanian Evangelical Lutheran priests were very scarce), as well as a quantitative advantage of the German community (in 1923 Germans made up 43.06 %, Lithuanians – 33.51 %, Latvians – 20.36 % of the overall Evangelical Lutheran community, while the remaining small part of Evangelical Lutherans consisted of other nationalities and foreigners). However, in 1930s Germans lost their leading positions in the Lithuanian Evangelical Lutheran community. It was due to the strict position of the leadership of the Consistory of Lithuanian Evangelicals in their fight against Germanization among Evangelical Lutherans, the growth of the number of Lithuanian Evangelical Lutheran priests and the growing awareness of Lithuanian Evangelical Lutherans themselves in the struggle with German Evangelical Lutherans for their equal rights and the leading role in the aforementioned religious community.

Straipsnyje remiantis Vydūno knyga „Septyni šimtai metų vokiečių ir lietuvių santykių“ nagrinėjama Vydūno požiūrio į tautiškumą genezė, esminiai jos momentai bei kultūrinė recepcija. Akcentuojami kultūriniai ir religiniai skirtumai, kurie XIX a. pabaigoje atvedė prie lietuviškosios savivokos sampratos skirtumų Didžiojoje ir Prūsų Lietuvoje. Straipsnyje tiriama kaip per tautiškumo suvokimą buvo realizuojamos atsinešti dar iš nacionalinio atgimimo epochos lietuvybės idėjų plėtros ir įtvirtinimo modeliai, pagrįsti skirtingų kultūriniu ir religiniu kontekstu. Tyrimų rezultatai rodo, kad net ir tos pačios tautos, tačiau besivysčiusios skirtingomis politinėmis ir religinėmis aplinkybėmis, atstovai siekdami bendro tikslo, gali jo kelius suprasti visiškai skirtingai.

Remiantis vien pirminių šaltinių analize ir sinteze (straipsnyje panaudota trylikos Lietuvos centrinio valstybės archyvo (toliau – LCVA) fondų medžiaga, informacija, esanti publikuotuose dokumentuose, statistiniuose leidiniuose ir krašto periodinėje spaudoje), straipsnyje nagrinėjamas latvių konsulato Klaipėdoje raidos 1920–1940 m. etapai. Įvardijamos Latvijos konsulato steigimo, funkcionavimo ir uždarymo aplinkybės, išskiriami konsulų – Alfreds’o Misse, Peterio Kalcenavs’o, Karlio Freimanio, Janio Riekstiņš’o ir Janio Seskio – atvejai. Aptariama 1920–1940 m. Klaipėdoje veikusio Latvijos konsulato veikla, analizuojami Latvijos konsulato rangų pokyčiai, personalas, konsulų kultūrinė veikla. Based on the analysis and synthesis of primary sources, the article analyses the stages of development of the Latvian consulate in Klaipėda in 1920–1940. It specifies the circumstances of establishment, functioning and closure of the Latvian consulate with a focus on the following consults: Alfreds Misse, Peteris Kalcenavs, Karlis Freimanis, Janis Riekstiņš, and Janis Seskis. It discusses the activities of the Latvian consulate in Klaipėda in 1920–1940 and analyses the changes in the ranks of the Latvian consulate, its personnel and cultural activities of consuls. Until now the development of Latvian consulates in Lithuania has not received adequate attention from Lithuanian researchers. There are barely several publications on this topic in Lithuania. The works by Sandra Grigaravičiūtė and Zenonas Butkus are especially noteworthy. The topic was more extensively covered by Latvian researchers, namely Ē. Jēkabsons, V. Ščerbinskis and K. Kapenieks. The study on the Latvian consulate in Klaipėda in 1920–1940 is new, relevant and significant as it is the first comprehensive study revealing the appointment and activities of Latvian consuls in Klaipėda. The paper makes use of the previously unpublished archival data, periodical press, statistical publications, works of foreign historians. The research object is the circumstances of establishment, functioning and closure of the Latvian consulate in Klaipėda (1920–1940). The position of the Latvian consulate in the Klaipėda Region in 1939 also became the object of research. The article covers the period from May 1920 to February 1940. Year 1920 was selected as the starting point because it was the year of appointment of the Latvian career consular agent in Klaipėda Alfreds Misse, whereas the year 1940 marks the termination of activities of the Latvian consulate in Klaipėda after the transfer of Klaipėda to Germany. The aim of the article is to analyse the motives and process of establishment of the Consulate General of Latvia in Klaipėda and to reveal its activity fields in the period 1920–1940. The article discusses the activities of the Latvian consulate in Klaipėda in 1920–1940; it analyses the changes in the ranks of the Latvian consulate, its personnel and cultural activities of consuls. The analysis of primary and secondary sources prompts a conclusion that the Consulate General of Latvia was established in Klaipėda due to two reasons: 1) observation of events in the Klaipėda Region and collection of information; and 2) a numerous population of Latvians as foreigners in Klaipėda (the consulate intensified the relations with Latvians in the Klaipėda Region and sought to represent their interests). From May 1920 to February 1940 when the Klaipėda Region was transferred to Germany a total of 5 Latvian consuls were appointed to Klaipėda: Alfreds Misse, Peteris Kalcenavs (twice: 1924 and 1933–1934), Karlis Freimanis, Janis Riekstiņš, Janis Seskis (one of the most active Latvian consuls in the Klaipėda Region and Lithuania without the Klaipėda Region). The main fields of activity of the Consulate General of Latvia in Klaipėda were the following: participation in cultural events and educational campaigns. Latvian consuls in Klaipėda paid special attention to the Curonians in 1932–1933 and Latvian Jews in 1939. The analysis of the circumstances of formation of the Latvian consular corps in Klaipėda leads to the conclusion that the Consulate General of Latvia was one of the longest-standing foreign consulates in Klaipėda (1920–1940).

Straipsnyje analizuojamos vokiečius ir lietuvius integravusios reikšmės, apibrėžusios regioninį Prūsijos Lietuvos patriotizmą ir sudariusios šio regiono atminimo kultūros pagrindą XIX a. - XX a. pr. Aiškinamasi, kokiu pagrindu XIX ir XX a. sandūroje dalis Prūsijos lietuvių ėmė formuoti alternatyvias reikšmes, pagrįstas lietuvišku didžiuoju istoriniu pasakojimu ir orientuotas į visų Prūsijos lietuvių etninio savitumo palaikymą ir jų atskyrimą nuo vokiečių. Kadangi pagrindiniu alternatyvių reikšmių šaltiniu tapo Prūsijos Lietuvoje kurtas lietuviškasis istorinis pasakojimas, straipsnyje išsamiai nagrinėjama pastarojo struktūra ir jos formavimosi įtakos. Autorius sprendžia klausimą, ar Prūsijos Lietuvoje susidarė alternatyvi atminimo kultūra, besiremianti lietuviškajame istoriniame pasakojime įtvirtinta reikšmių sistema ir pasižyminti savomis ceremonijų, ritualų ir paminklų statybos praktikomis The paper analyses particular meanings which integrated the Germans and Lithuanians living in Prussian Lithuania, defined their regional patriotism, and constituted the fundamentals of the regional culture of remembrance in the 19th and the early 20th c. It also examines the circumstances which, at the turn of the 20th c, gave an opportunity for part of Prussian Lithuanians to create alternative meanings, based on the Lithuanian historical master narrative, and encouraged Prussian Lithuanians to maintain their ethnic peculiarity and to support their distinction from Germans. Since Lithuanian historical narrative, created in Prussian Lithuania, became a source of alternative meanings, its structure, as well as the sources of its formation, is exhaustively analysed in the article. The author tries to resolve the issue whether the alternative culture of remembrance, based on the structure of meanings which were consolidated in the Lithuanian historical narrative and characterized by its own ceremonies, rituals, and monument erection practices, had formed in Prussia Lithuania

Straipsnyje pristatomas 2002–2005 m. atliktas tyrimas, kurio tikslas – ištirti vokiečių ir lietuvių kaimynystės poveikį tiek vienai, tiek kitai etninei kultūrai, nustatyti vokiečių kultūrinio skverbimosi į lietuvišką erdvę padarinius. Remdamasi istorine medžiaga, lingvistiniais tyrimais ir pateikėjų informacija, straipsnio autorė surinko kalbinių ir etninės lietuvių kultūros duomenų, kurie pagrindžia kultūrinio perėmimo teoriją. Darbe lyginami tik Suvalkijos ir Klaipėdos krašto duomenys. Suvalkijos teritorijoje vokiečiai ir lietuviai kaimynystėje pradėjo gyventi nuo XIV amžiaus. XX amžiuje patys vokiečių kilmės Suvalkijos gyventojai jau nebebuvo išlaikę ne tik vokiškų papročių, bet dažnai ir kalbos – visiškai sulietuvėjo. Klaipėdos krašte, kuris XIII–XVII amžiais nors ir priklausė Prūsijai, buvo gana taikus, įvykiai klostėsi kiek kitaip: stipri politinė germanizacija prasidėjo tik XVIII a. ir tęsėsi iki XX a. pradžios. Lingvistiniu požiūriu lietuvių etninė kultūra buvo paveikta dvejopai: per vokiečių kilmės antroponimus ir germanizmus. Etninę kultūrų asimiliaciją labiausiai veikė natūralus vokiečių susigyvenimas su lietuviais Lietuvos ir Prūsijos pasienio kaimuose. Kitaip nei Klaipėdos krašte, kur germanizacija buvo vykdoma dirbtinai ir priverstinai, Suvalkijoje šis procesas buvo natūralus ir vyko kita kryptimi – vokiečiai lietuvėjo. Kaimyninių santykių teorija pasitvirtino – tiek lietuviai, tiek vokiečiai buvo veikiami vieni kitų kultūrų. Vis dėlto tautinė mažuma ilgainiui prarado savo tautinį tapatumą. This article presents the research, performed in 2002–2005, the purpose of which was to explore the influence of Lithuanian – German neighbourhood to the ethnic cultures of these two nationalities and to establish consequences of the German culture intrusion into Lithuanian space. There is analyzed, what influence was in the Lithuanian lingual field, including germanisms and antroponyms, and what was in Lithuanians opinion the international significance of so nearly neighborhood between two different nationalities in the local ethnic culture

1923–1939 m. Klaipėdos kraštas autonomijos teisėmis priklausė Lietuvai, bet ekonominį, kultūrinį, politinį gyvenimą jame iš esmės modeliavo Lietuvos–Vokietijos interesų kova dėl įtakos krašte. Lietuvos politiką įtakojo ir Didžiosios Lietuvos lietuvių bei klaipėdiškių/lietuvininkų tarpusavio bendravimo ir supratimo problema. Straipsnio tikslas – remiantis Lietuviškųjų organizacijų komiteto veikla (1934–1939), atskleisti didlietuvių ir klaipėdiškių/lietuvininkų santykius bei Lietuvos valstybės politiką Klaipėdos krašte. Valdžios vykdyta krašto atlietuvinimo politika išryškino Kauno vyriausybės maksimalizmą ir didino trintį tarp Didžiosios Lietuvos lietuvių ir klaipėdiškių. Vienu iš Klaipėdos krašto gubernatoriaus J. Navako ideologinės veiklos rezultatų tapo 1934 m. pradžioje įkurtas Lietuviškųjų organizacijų komitetas, siekęs koordinuoti visų lietuvių organizacijų veiklą, apimti visus krašto lietuvių visuomenės kultūrinius, ekonominius ir politinius reikalus ir taip stiprinti klaipėdiškių lietuviškąsias valstybines aspiracijas. Trintį tarp klaipėdiškių ir didlietuvių stiprino pastarųjų nepasitikėjimas klaipėdiškiais dėl jų „netikro” lietuviškumo, siekiant juos išeliminuoti iš krašto valdymo ir tai stiprino klaipėdiškių nusivylimą Lietuvos valstybės politika. 1938–1939 m. sandūroje ryškėjo Lietuvos pralaimėjimas finansinėje ir politinėje kovoje prieš Vokietiją. Vietos gyventojai kasdien veikiami vokiškosios propagandos ir nematydami jiems siūlomų klaipėdiškio tapatumo išsaugojimo alternatyvų lietuviškoje veikloje, pereidavo į jiems labiau pažįstamą vokiškumo pusę. Klaipėda district belonged to the State of Lithuania as autonomy in 1923–1939. The economical, cultural and politic life was under the Lithuanian-German struggle of interests in this region. The policy of Lithuanian State government concerning this autonomy was influenced by Lithuanian–German interstate relationships, as well as by problem of co-existence and reciprocal understanding of local lietuvininkai and didlietuviai (Lithuanians from Lithuania – major) people. The aim of the article is to show the relations between local lietuvininkai and didlietuviai and to explain the Lithuanian State policy in Lithuania Minor with the help of historical experience of the activities of the Committee of Lithuanian Organizations at that time (1934–1939). The policy of back-lithuanization of Klaipėda-Minor people developed the maximalism of Kaunas government and determined the increasing conflicts between Lithuanians from Lithuania-Major and lietuvininkai people in Klaipėda district, Lithuania Minor. The result of Mr. J. Navakas (the Governor of Klaipėda land) ideological activities was the establishment of the Committee of Lithuanian Organizations in Klaipėda in 1934. The idea and the main goal of this Committee were to coordinate activities between all Lithuanian organizations. The misunderstanding between lietuvininkai and didlietuviai was also based on mistrust of lietuvininkai as ‘not real Lithuanians’ on the side of didlietuviai. The real overturn came to Lithuanization policy in the late 1938–early 1939 years. Financial and political powers on German side were much stronger.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjami pokarinės Klaipėdos gyvenimo aspektai, aptariami socialiniai, kultūriniai, administraciniai Klaipėdos gyvenimo bruožai 1945–1982 metais. Kultūriniai ir švietimo procesai mieste atspindėjo praktiškai visas viešojo gyvenimo sritis užvaldžiusius sovietizacijos simptomus. Klaipėda tapo kultūrine Lietuvos periferija. Pagrindinėmis meno sritimis Klaipėdoje buvo teatras ir kinas, muziejų ir dailės galerijų tinklas kūrėsi lėtai. Reikšmingiausias buvo 8-asis dešimtmetis, per kurį sukurta didžioji ir dabartinės miesto kultūrinės infrastruktūros dalis. 1945–1982 metais Klaipėda vystėsi kaip pramoninis-techninis Lietuvos centras. Baigiantis karo veiksmams, miestą paliko beveik visi jo gyventojai. Vokiečius pakeitė iš Lietuvos ir kitų TSRS respublikų vykę žmonės. Nuo 6-ojo dešimtmečio ryškėjo lietuviškėjimo tendencijos, sparčiai augo miesto gyventojų skaičius. Be minėtų tautų, didesnes miesto etnines grupes išlaikė baltarusiai, ukrainiečiai, tačiau žydų beveik nebuvo. 8-ojo dešimtmečio pabaigoje Klaipėda transformavosi į lietuviškos dvasios miestą. Religijos ir tarybinės sistemos institucijų santykiai 1945–1982 metais buvo komplikuoti. Tikėjimo išpažinimas buvo nesuderinamas su ateistiniu pasaulėvaizdžio suvokimu. Po 1945 m. Klaipėda keitė savo urbanistinį veidą. Tai lėmė ūkinės, paslaugų infrastruktūros, gyvenamojo fondo plėtimą, formavusį naują miesto įvaizdį, tačiau daugelis pagal tipinius projektus vykdytų tarybinių statybų niveliavo urbanistinės plėtros raidą, suteikė jai monotoniškumo, tapusio pagrindiniu naujųjų Klaipėdos rajonų bruožu. The article analyses aspects of post-war life in Klaipėda, discusses the social, cultural, and administrative aspects of life in Klaipėda from 1945 to 1982. Cultural and educational processes in the city practically reflected all the areas of public life that were taken by the symptoms of sovietisation. Klaipėda became the cultural periphery of Lithuania. The main art areas in Klaipėda were theatre and cinema, the network of museums and art galleries developed slowly. The most significant time were the eighties, when the major part of the current cultural infrastructure of the city was created. In 1945-1982 Klaipeda developed as an industrial-technical centre of Lithuania. By the end of hostilities, almost all its inhabitants left the city. The Germans have been replaced by people from Lithuania and other republics of the USSR. Since the sixties, Lithuanian traditions have emerged and the city's population started growing rapidly. In addition to the above-mentioned nations, the larger ethnic groups of the city remained Belarusians, Ukrainians, but almost no Jews. At the end of the eighties, Klaipėda became a city of Lithuanian spirit. Relations between the institutions of religion and the Soviet system in 1945-1982 were complicated. Confession of faith was incompatible with the atheistic perception of the worldview. After 1945, Klaipėda changed its urban appearance. This led to the economy, service infrastructure, residential fund expansion which shaped the new image of the city, but many of the Soviet-style construction projects levelled out the development of urban development, gave it a monotony, which became the main feature of the new Klaipėda districts.

The Germans did not fight the Great War to liberate anyone. Their goal was to expand Germany's borders. This paper seeks to develop an old thesis of Franz Fischer about the expansionist nature of the German war objectives through the examination of yet unknown primary sources found, for the most part, in archives in Vilnius. As Fischer demonstrated, Bethmann-Hollweg planned to push away Russia as far as possible from the German borders, and to abolish Petrograd’s hold over non-Russian vassal peoples already in September 1914. Berlin intended to establish a Central European economic union operating de facto under German leadership, although with preservation of the external equality of its members. It seems that this plan was maintained through the war. The Bethmann-Hollweg peace terms, transmitted to Wilson in January 1918, stipulated, among other things, that the lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth should be included in the German economic and military sphere of influence.
