The genus Rinodina (Physciaceae), with approximately 300 species, has been subject to few phylogenetic studies. Consequently taxonomic hypotheses in Rinodina are largely reliant on phenotypic data, while hypotheses incorporating DNA dependent methods remain to be tested. Here we investigate Rinodina degeliana/R. subparieta and the Rinodina mniaraea group, which previously have not been subjected to comprehensive molecular and phenotypic studies. We conducted detailed morphological, anatomical, chemical, molecular phylogenetic and species delimitation studies including 24 newly sequenced specimens. We propose that Rinodina degeliana and R. subparieta are conspecific and that chemical morphs within the R. mniaraea group should be recognized as distinct species. We also propose the placement of the recently described genus Oxnerella in Physciaceae. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Lecanora sorediomarginata Rodrigues, Terrón & Elix sp. nov., described as new to science from Portugal, is characterized morphologically by a crustose whitish-grey to greenish thallus developing soralia from small, marginal warts and chemically by the presence of 3,5-dichloro-2′-O-methylnorstenosporic acid [major], 3,5-dichloro-2′-O-methylanziaic acid [minor], 3,5-dichloro-2′-O-methylnordivaricatic acid [minor], 5-chloro-2′-O-methylanziaic acid [trace], atranorin [minor], chloroatranorin [minor], and usnic acid [trace]. It is chemically similar to L. lividocinerea, to which it shows phylogenetic affinities based on ITS rDNA sequence analysis, and to L. sulphurella. Lecanora sorediomarginata is epiphytic on Pinus pinaster and P. pinea, in pine forests on sand dunes along the Portuguese coast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new species Lepraria santosiiArguello & Crespo is described from the Canary Islands. It is characterized by a crustose to subsquamulose thallus with slightly raised rim and the presence of atranorin and the stictic acid chemosyndrome. It is currently known from Tenerife (Canary Islands), where it grows on soil over basaltic rocks in the laurel forest. Twelve new sequences of the ITS region from this species and L. isidiata were obtained and analysed with sequences downloaded from GenBank. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses suggest that Lepraria santosii is closely related to L. isidiata. The latter name is here lectotypified and the characters for the distinction of the two species from similar taxa are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
