The present study examines the extent of academic librarians' teaching, research, communication, and interpersonal skills; key competencies required for the successful implementation of embedded librarianship in Tanzania. A mixed research approach, integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches, was deployed to guide the collection of data from 166 librarians and 6 directors. Whereas cross-section survey questionnaires were used to collect data from librarians from six university libraries. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were used to collect data from directors. Regarding statistical analysis, descriptive statistics were performed to derive frequencies and percentages from quantitative data collected. The qualitative data were analyzed thematically and presented in narrative form. The findings suggest that librarians' teaching skills and their knowledge of the research cycle are inadequate, while their communication and interpersonal skills are sufficient to allow them to effectively embed their services in their users' (researchers, students, and teaching staff) activities. To effectively adopt embedded librarianship, the authors recommend the allocation of adequate funds to support diverse external and in-house training, the development of harmonized library and information science (LIS) curriculum, and the use of social media to interact with users. As the physical building of a national library can serve as a tangible expression of political and cultural philosophy, a given digital archive manifests ideological features of the national legacy it preserves and disseminates electronically. Millennial discourses have influenced national library building projects in both physical and digital archives. However, a simple analogy between conventional and electronic spaces is inadequate, because national policies on digitizing documents and regulating access engender contradictory impulses in archivists and policy makers. Although considerable attention has recently focused on the `right to read', the physical space of a document archive is constituted by prohibitions on reading. In a 2002 survey, the degree of regulation varied greatly depending on national context. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France made its digital collection widely and anonymously available, but closely surveiled readers in its physical space. The Library of Congress offered democratic access and embraced an 'open source' approach to cataloguing, but corporate and public interests were in conflict, and 'born digital' documents created a policy crisis. The British Library offered an interface that emulated turning pages of rare tomes but came late to prioritize searchable text encoding. In contrast, the Danvers Archival Center offered a model of a 'local' archive that asserted its social function in a particular community but also claimed a role in shaping digital resources. Entrepreneurship education seeks to provide students with the knowledge, skill and motivation to encourage entrepreneurial success in a variety of settings. Entrepreneurship is developed as a way of developing skills such as risk-taking and problem solving that facilitate the achievement of life goals and in education. It is the recognition of an opportunity to create value, and the process of acting on this opportunity. In the recent years, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have developed very rapidly in line with the growth and convergence that occurred in telecommunication technology for entrepreneurship success. The convergence of computers and telecommunication technology has popularized the electronic generation and access to information. Consequently, different technological applications are now created in order to support the operational activities of human life and organization. As a result of this, users are now expected to be computer literate to enable them explore information resources for entrepreneurial business. ICT is mainly concerned with the storage, retrieval, manipulation, transmission or receipt of digital data. The improvement of the entrepreneurship educational system over the years has been the concern of educators and researchers. This yearning is not unconnected with the undisputable fact that National Development is hinged on the successful development, use and execution of research findings in the application of ICT tools in teaching and learning of entrepreneurship. By inference, entrepreneurship education develops enterprising people and inculcates an attitude of self-reliance, using appropriate learning processes. Going by this, therefore, many LIS schools are now incorporating entrepreneurship skills in to their curriculum. Library and information science practice and research have transitioned from positioning the user in the life of the library to placing the library in the life of the user. A review of OCLC Research themes during the past twenty years identifies a shift in focus from the optimization and quantitative analysis of library collections, systems, and services to the study of the needs and expectations of users of library collections, systems, and services. Just as libraries operate within local and global networks and ecosystems, users, with diverse needs and expectations, are embedded in communities in various ways. This new environment changes the focus from individual decision making to collaborative decision making, centering and emphasizing the importance of relationships and experiences. OCLC's research has addressed these trends, providing a path for library leaders and staff to create their New Model Library that focuses on agility, collaboration, virtualization, and space within their work, collections, and engagement experiences. Librarians at a large, federally funded, multidisciplinary research organization sought to assess the value provided by the library's collections. One method for capturing this value includes determining how well their library's collections meet researcher needs, as expressed by the materials those researchers choose to cite in the production of new scholarly communications. A cited reference analysis was performed on the publications originating from the institution to provide the necessary data for the assessment, as well as to aid in the creation of a core list of journals which will inform future collection development efforts. This paper fills a gap in the library and information science literature by addressing the citation behaviors of researchers at a large multidisciplinary government research facility, a setting that has not been examined previously. An overview and analysis of the Journal Citation Reports' impact factor is provided here. The historical development, calculation of, and alternatives to impact factor are briefly described. Nine general uses of impact factor, including library collection management decisions, journal rankings, journal decision models, and full-text database evaluation, are discussed. Ten benefits, such as its well-established authority, are listed. Finally, more than a dozen criticisms of citation data in general (e.g., self-citations are counted) and impact factor specifically (e.g., problems with the formula for its calculation) are analyzed. The author concludes that impact factor, if used appropriately and in combination with other criteria, is a valid tool that can assist journal collection management decisions in research libraries. Purpose: This study investigates an approach to book metrics for research evaluation that takes into account the complexity of scholarly monographs. This approach is based on work sets – unique scholarly works and their within-work related bibliographic entities – for scholarly monographs in national databases for research output. Design/methodology/approach: This study examines bibliographic records on scholarly monographs acquired from four European databases (VABB in Flanders, Belgium; CROSBI in Croatia; CRISTIN in Norway; COBISS in Slovenia). Following a data enrichment process using metadata from OCLC WorldCat and Amazon Goodreads, the authors identify work sets and the corresponding ISBNs. Next, on the basis of the number of ISBNs per work set and the presence in WorldCat, they design a typology of scholarly monographs: Globally visible single-expression works, Globally visible multi-expression works, Miscellaneous and Globally invisible works. Findings: The findings show that the concept "work set" and the proposed typology can aid the identification of influential scholarly monographs in the social sciences and humanities (i.e. the Globally visible multi-expression works). Practical implications: In light of the findings, the authors outline requirements for the bibliographic control of scholarly monographs in national databases for research output that facilitate the use of the approach proposed here. Originality/value: The authors use insights from library and information science (LIS) to construct complexity-sensitive book metrics. In doing so, the authors, on the one hand, propose a solution to a problem in research evaluation and, on the other hand, bring to attention the need for a dialogue between LIS and neighbouring communities that work with bibliographic data. The article shares the author's perspectives on the collection management in academic libraries in the U.S. For him, the important element of academic libraries, which is collection, is slowly decreasing and mismanagement is prevalent in academic libraries. Furthermore, the availability of journal collections has been decreasing in libraries, however, such collections are rapidly becoming available in digital forms. In fact, studies and reports from librarians and vendors, show that digital journals are increasingly used each year. He concluded that in an increasingly digital and consortial world, the library as a place must give way to something such as the library as a mission.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine how archaeological document collections are layered entities and, thus, consist of documents that may be in discordance with one another. Implications of this scenario for scientific study are discussed. Tensions arise between archaeological and Information and Library Science practices. Curators become primary agents in reconstructing the appropriate representational continuity of these documents. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is an in-depth examination of documentation in the Glenn Black Laboratory of Archaeology. It assesses how representations between documents are maintained as part of the collection management process. A document archaeological analysis of the Angel Mounds Collection shows how discordant data between documents is reconciled. Findings: The study shows how documentary institutions are central to maintaining the chain of reference necessary to maintain the veracity of scientific data. Documents are embedded within a professional network of classification control that has implications for the conceptualization of documents. The study can help scholars gain a more nuanced view of the role of documents in scientific knowledge creation. Social implications: Curatorial intervention plays a central role in maintaining the veracity of scientific data. In this way, the narrative shows how social and professional scientific discourses are impacted by curatorial intervention and that this process is inextricable from how we understand "knowledge" broadly construed. Originality/value: This study examines how documents are embedded within a broader collection context and further studies should acknowledge this. It shows how documents within the domain of archaeology pose specific issues of concern for document curators and scholars, especially in relation to the documentation of spatial data, which is central to this work. Hungarian librarianship and related research are sadly underrepresented in international literature. With this article we intend to fill this gap and inform the experts of library and information science of some of the most recent Hungarian innovations. After showcasing the international professional connections of Hungarian librarianship, we present the structure of the Hungarian public library network and its mode of operation. We also analyse current and future main digital development plans, projects and the most important related professional activities of Hungarian libraries. Emphasis is placed on information systems promoting cooperation between libraries and the issues of the National Library System Project, which is a large-scale modernisation programme carried out between 2016 and 2018, designed to develop the IT system of the National Széchényi Library. After introducing the information systems of academic and specialised libraries and the access models of scientific databases provided by multinational and Hungarian content services, we also discuss the endeavours of public libraries aiming for multifunctionality and community organisation. The paper ends by providing insights into how the outcomes of the recent initiatives have been fed back into Hungarian LIS training courses offered in higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to study the content features of select Websites of Department of Library and Information Science in North India. The checklist was designed for content evaluation of selected websites of Department of Library and Information Science which was clubbed into nine categories. After evaluating the content of selected websites under study, it was found that the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Delhi is at rank number one among five Departments of Library and Information Science in north India and Department of Library and Information Science, Maharishi Dyanand University, Rohtak at the bottom rank. The study was limited to the content of DLIS websites in north India which were general in nature. This study compares the DLIS websites in terms of different content features employed on its websites. The notion of an academic library outreach program denotes the efforts uphold by an institution's academic library to serve their academic community, namely; students, academician, researchers and non-academic administrators. However, the theory and the practices of an outreach program in a Malaysian academic library and Malaysian public library tends to be overlapping. The aim of this article is to discover and deliberate on the factors that affect an outreach program in an academic library. In doing so, study result from two Institutes of Teacher Education (IPG) in the State of Kedah is selected. This study adopts a qualitative case study approach with in-depth individual interviews of the leading librarian for each institution, and later the thematic content analysis and cross-case analysis is used throughout this study in order to analyze the data. From the result of the interviews in the two Institutes of Teacher Education (IPG) in the State of Kedah, two most important factors emerge and it is said to be the key factor the affect an academic library outreach programs. The characteristics of postgraduate supervisors in library and information science in Nigerian universities and their perceptions of the timely completion of doctoral programmes were investigated, employing a questionnaire as data collection instrument. Thirty-eight supervisors from 11 university-based library schools that had already produced doctoral graduates were used for the study, and 23 respondents completed the questionnaire. The findings reveal that the supervisors are highly qualified and experienced in terms of their academic qualifications, employment status, experience in supervisory work, and their involvement in all types of research activities, including serving as external examiners both within and outside the country, and their involvement in managing journals, peer-review of journal articles, etc. The supervisors identified poor writing skills as the major obstacles to the timely completion of doctoral programmes. A t-test analysis and Spearman rho coefficient were used to determine factors that could possibly affect timely completion of doctoral programmes. The results show that gender and the experience of supervisors in term of the number of past and present supervisees had significant relationships with the timely completion of doctoral programmes. Purpose This paper aims to review the current library and information science (LIS) literature for document supply, resource sharing and other issues such as open access (OA) that have an impact on the service.Design/methodology/approach The approach is based on the scanning of about 150 journals, reports, websites and blogs.Findings Of the 13 articles and reports reviewed, 12 are freely available, continuing the trend of increasing OA. As we consider the future of the information professions, it is useful to reflect on issues related to the library and information science workforce and the values that underlie the field. The author's professional experience and research are used to highlight important practice trends such as digital libraries, embedded librarianship, broadening the audience for library and information services, involvement in problem-based learning, evidence based practice, end user searching of online databases, and the increasing need to conduct studies that link information services to key outcomes. The importance of tracking practice trends as part of the ongoing curriculum revision process is emphasized. Linking both education and research to practice will be crucial to the success of future educational programs and the ability of graduates to make a useful contribution in the workplace. Workforce tracking of alumni is a key component of effective strategic planning and overall workforce planning, especially in a time of major demographic change. The article presents a study which explored the relationship between library/information science (LIS) and education. The study made use of different sources, which include blog entries, academic journal papers, and books. Results suggested that there are means in which the duties and functions of information professionals and teachers coincide. The study also revealed the contrasts associated with and perceptions of information literacy, as well as the differences in the relative positions of information professionals and teachers within schools.

Purpose – This paper seeks to deal with the "image problem" in the library and information science (LIS) profession from the cultural studies viewpoint. It aims to explore representations of LIS in LIS itself and to research the representation practices of LIS in the social and cultural environment. Design/methodology/approach – After identifying some main features of professional discourse on the LIS image, the empirical part of the research particularly explored two questions: how LIS is constituted and how it is embedded in broader social practices. More than 300 articles were collected from the Slovenian daily newspaper with the largest circulation. The sample was analyzed quantitatively and two-fold qualitatively. Findings – The results of quantitative analysis outline the formation of LIS's community nature. The results of qualitative analysis mostly show the signifying practices in differentiating between the "old" and the "modern" and representing practices in creating "zealous" librarians and "suspicious" users. The results also point to librarians as "organic intellectuals". Research limitations/implications – The study is exploratory and at this point the thesis on "organic intellectuals" cannot be confirmed; in addition to the limits in the analysis methods, the theoretical background needs to be further explored. The findings cannot be generalized due to social and cultural differences. Practical implications – The methodology can be applied to other research subjects. The results may be helpful for library managers and library public relations work. Originality/value – There are only a few studies of such theoretical and methodological design that have researched the role of the LIS in society. The article examines the management of information technology, particularly computers and the Internet, in libraries in Nigeria. Efforts by those libraries to close the so-called "digital divide" in which many persons lack access to the Internet and other digital media are discussed. It is noted that the main emphasis of libraries is shifting from the collection and storage of books to offering access to electronic information services. The importance of training Nigerian librarians in digitization and insuring a high level of information literacy among librarians is stressed.

Succession planning, a strategy for developing leaders from within the company or organization, is a technique that could be useful to libraries. Libraries will soon be faced with more open positions because of retirements than we can fill. The dilemma is complicated by a shortage of younger, midcareer librarians and a shortage of new recruits into the profession. These openings will be primarily in leadership positions. This problem will affect libraries of all kinds including business libraries. One solution is to "grow your own" leaders by using succession planning techniques to identify staff with the interest and potential for upper-level positions, to determine the gaps in knowledge, and to set up training and mentoring programs so that they are ready to assume leadership positions in the near future. Contextualizes the historical evolution of modern librarianship in East Asia, encompassing the sub-regions of North-East and South-East Asia, in the societies in which it emerged. Employs the theory of cultural hegemony, conceptualized by Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937), as the foundation for viewing that evolution of East Asian librarianship. This article discusses what the D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History has done to render more accessible Newberry Library's renowned collection of printed materials on American Indian history, culture and literatures. The author said that the center, which is located in Chicago, Illinois, is focused on creating bridges and challenging boundaries, and that the tension between scholarship and activism molds the activities of the center and is responsible for numerous groundbreaking initiatives. The center serves distinct constituencies but ultimately exists to promote the use of library collections.

In order for collection development librarians to justify the adoption of electronic books (e-books), they need to determine if e-books satisfy the information needs of patrons. One method to determine this is to measure e-book usage. This study compared the usage of 7,880 titles that were available in both print and e-book format at the Duke University Libraries. Although the results of this study cannot be generalized, it does provide information on the use of e-books in one academic research library and implications for e-book collection development. Rare book cataloging codes and practices have been shaped by a constant interplay between the tradition of descriptive bibliography and the evolution of library cataloging codes. At the same time, technological changes, such as the emergence of bibliographic databases and online catalogs, have led to promises of increased flexibility and usability in records for rare books. This article will focus on the development of modern Anglo-American rare book cataloging, highlighting special access points that often appear to exist outside the mainstream of library cataloging. By focusing on the treatment of several “hallmarks” of rare book records in codes published during the second half of the twentieth century, the development of rare book cataloging and its relationship to the traditions of bibliography and general library emerge. Library classification schemes have become increasingly available in electronic form and undergone many enhancements that make them attractive for Web knowledge organization. In fact, library professionals have been quite successful in applying library classification to Internet-based information services in a number of projects, both small and large. Yet, many opportunities remain for improving our general knowledge organization tools and using them in new ways. In this article, the DDC hierarchy structure is compared to the subject trees of Internet directory services in terms categories, hierarchies, and distributions of postings. The schemes are also compared with respect to several general characteristics that support browsing. Efforts on reconstruction of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, completely destroyed August 25, 1992, include the reconstruction of its collections in various formats, including digital replicas. Guidelines were taken from a 1910 Declaration on establishing literary archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Newly worded in 2000, the Declaration is an attempt at creating digital archives in conformity with SGML, using commercially available software for in-house training of students at the Department for Comparative Literature and Librarianship of the University of Sarajevo. In a period of less than three years, the digital collection has grown to forty SGML textual instances based on ISO 12083:1994 DTD Book and TEI Lite v.1.6 DTD. Both types of document type definition were translated into Bosnian and several other SGML-aware tools were created for a two-way correspondence between DTD instances. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The LibQUAL+ survey is a web-based instrument that can be administered annually to enable libraries to determine their users' level of satisfaction with the quality of collections, facilities, and library services. This article examines the Texas Tech University Libraries' LibQUAL+ survey results for 2001 in the area of Access to Collections. The institution's results are compared with average survey scores from 20,416 respondents at 43 institutions, chiefly Association of Research Libraries members. This keynote paper considers each of the three facets included in the title of the conference: continuity, culture and competition. Each facet, it is argued, challenges the academic community in library and information science (LIS) to retreat from a narrow view of knowledge transfer in society founded on textual documentation as the channel of communication, and libraries as the means of gaining access to such documentation. The case against continuity in the design and teaching of LIS curricula is made by forecasting the likely socioeconomic context of information resource management in 2005. The widening availability of digitally-integrated cultural artefacts signals the need for a convergence of librarianship with professional activity within other forms of memory institution. Competition from the subject discipline of computer science to provide the knowledge and skills deemed most appropriate for the information professional of the future suggests that LIS academics should collaborate, rather than compete within their community, the better to present a strongly unified discipline provision as the basis for a convergence of interests and influence with information system developers. This article attempts to reconstruct, from the material available to the author, the concept of the national system of scientific, technical, and organizational information in Poland. A new approach to the system was formally introduced in 1974 and is now a subject of extensive debate among Polish librarians and information specialists. The article presents a bibliography of documentation which appears regularly in the journal "American Documentation." One of the notes provides that the Division of Biological Sciences of the National Science Foundation, for administrative purposes, has departed from conventional terminology, such as biochemistry, biophysics and physiology, in its system for grouping research projects into categories. For this purpose, biological sciences have been divided into areas covering the full spectrum of biology with the molecule at one extreme and the psyche at the other.
