Health science libraries have been using information technology since the late 1960s, shaping both the profession and the mission of these libraries. To explore the impact of technology, a series of articles has been commissioned for the HILJ Regular Feature, International Perspectives and Initiatives. This editorial sets the scene for this series of articles, which starts in this issue. These articles, written by health science librarians from around the globe, will explore the impact of technology on the way health science libraries provide information in the digital age. Some articles will look at national trends and others will focus on a particular library. A key theme is how technology is being used to support the mission of health science libraries and whether technology has altered that mission. This editorial provides a brief overview of the technologies libraries have adopted, from the 1970s to the present day. From this, it is clear that information technology has transformed the way health information is collected, catalogued, and disseminated to users. And it is certain that in the coming decade new technologies will be incorporated into health science libraries, which will pose challenges for both users and librarians. However, librarians will continue to find ways to adapt and use these tools to meet the needs of their users.

RESUMO Introdução: Tendo em consideração que a atividade de investigação em Comunicação cresceu fortemente nos últimos anos, como indicado por estudos anteriores, o presente trabalho visa estabelecer uma pesquisa em termos de produção científica nessa área. Objetivos: Esse artigo analisa a produção científica na área da Comunicação, entre 2007 e 2017, em revistas indexadas no primeiro quartil (Q1) e no segundo quartil (Q2) da base de dados Web of Science, pertencentes a autores com afiliação em instituições brasileiras. Metodologia: Foram identificadas as revistas de comunicação no InCities (JCR) pertencentes aos dois primeiros quartis, em seguida foi realizada uma busca por título de periódico na WoS e posteriormente o tratamento e normalização dos dados obtidos. Resultados: Observa-se um crescimento na produção científica em Comunicação, na projeção internacional, alimentando uma tradição em coautoria com redes internacionais. No período de 2014 a 2017, tenderam a publicar principalmente em inglês, frente às colaborações usuais que vinham mantendo com países de língua espanhola até 2014. Conclusão: Conclui-se, entre outras coisas, que o sistema de avaliação da Capes, quadrienal, pode ter influenciado a produção científica em Comunicação no intervalo estudado. ABSTRACT Introduction: Taking into consideration that research activity in Communication has grown strongly in recent years, as indicated by previous studies, the present work aims to establish a survey in terms of scientific production in this area. Objectives: This paper analyzes the scientific production in the area of Communication, between 2007 and 2017, in journals indexed in the first quartile (Q1) and second quartile (Q2) of the Web of Science database, belonging to authors with affiliation in Brazilian institutions. Methodology: Communication journals in InCities (JCR) belonging to the first two quartiles were identified, then a search by journal title in WoSff was performed and subsequently the treatment and normalization of the data obtained. Results: A growth in scientific production in Communication is observed, in international projection, feeding a tradition in coauthorship with international networks. In the period from 2014 to 2017, they tended to publish mainly in English, against the usual collaborations that they had been maintaining with Spanish-speaking countries until 2014. Conclusion: We conclude, among other things, that the Capes evaluation system, quadrennial, may have influenced the scientific production in Communication in the studied interval.

Public librarians often address patron inquiries regarding health concerns. However, prior research indicates that public librarians may be unprepared to meet the health information requests of patrons.This study examined the availability of health-themed courses in American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master of Library and Information Studies/Science (MLIS) programs.Accredited MLIS programs were identified using the ALA directory. Curricula were reviewed for health content and public librarianship, children's, and young adult concentrations. Descriptive and bivariate analyses assessed the percent of programs that offered various health-related course content and the differences in availability of such content.Of the 59 accredited MLIS programs, only 35 (59.32%) listed at least one health elective and none listed a required health course. No MLIS programs that had a public library concentration (n = 21) listed a required or elective health course, two programs with a children's concentration (n = 25) listed health course electives, and one program with a young adult concentration (n = 25) listed a health course elective.ALA-accredited MLIS programs should consider increasing their offerings or requiring health-related courses to improve the training of public librarians to meet the health information needs of communities.

How information literate are the Google generation, and what information literacy skills do they bring to university? For university libraries, understanding student prior knowledge provides a foundation on which to introduce appropriate learning activities during the first year. In 2009, in response to a new pedagogical model in health sciences, La Trobe University Library measured and analysed the entry-level information literacy skills of first year health science students. The data was gathered during the first week of semester and 1,029 responses were collected. This paper examines the results of the survey and its implications for programs that broaden and build on students’ existing knowledge base.

By reading the titles, abstracts, and keywords of LIS doctoral dissertations in China from 2011–2020 and conducting cluster analysis and network analysis of keywords, this study aims to understand the intelligence structure of LIS doctoral dissertations in China, as well as the disciplines and topics intersecting with LIS. The results indicated that Wuhan University had the highest number of doctoral dissertations among all the selected universities offering LIS doctoral education. Research fields mainly focus on online information behavior and information services. The findings could be because of the development of computer science and information technology in the past decade, which indicates that the research direction of LIS in China follows the trend of time development.

The digital humanities (DH) is an emerging field of teaching and research that invites modern technologies to address traditional humanities questions while simultaneously making space for humanistic critiques of those technologies. A natural relationship exists between DH and the field of information studies (the iField), particularly surrounding their common focus on the interface between humans and computers, as well as subfields such as the organization of information, libraries and archives, data preservation, and information in society. Thus, we propose that iField programs in universities should take an active role in DH education. We are particularly interested in programs that are officially Information Schools (iSchools), members of the international iSchools Organization. Our research began as part of a DH curriculum committee convened by the iSchools Organization. To support iSchool engagement in DH education, we have inventoried and analyzed the degrees and supplemental credentials offered by DH education programs throughout the world. Our study deployed multiple data collection methods, which included conducting both ad hoc and comprehensive website surveys, querying an online DH catalog, and inviting members of the iSchools Organization to participate in an online questionnaire. This work has revealed several common patterns for the current structure of DH programs, including the various types of degrees or supplemental credentials offered. We observe that iSchools have a significant opportunity to become more engaged in DH education and we suggest several possible approaches based on our research.

Plagiarism is malpractice, the fabrication of others’ “ideas or work” published without the proper permission or citation of the original contributors. Plagiarism is detected through different software, i.e., Turnitin, before publishing any research data. The present survey study assesses whether academicians, researchers, and scholars around the world perceive this software as a creator or destroyer of new thoughts and ideas. A survey of this research data was conducted with academicians, researchers, and scholars around the globe. The number of respondents is 1100, including 688 teaching professionals, 347 non-teaching, and 65 others. The present study finds that 82.7 per cent of research professionals mentioned that plagiarism could be appropriately citable. 76.7 per cent suggested that plagiarism can be completely avoidable, and 72.4 per cent has been proposed to be punishable. The study also described that plagiarism software is a good, efficient, and effective creator for new ideas.

IntroductionCOVID-19-related (vs. non-related) articles appear to be more expeditiously processed and published in peer-reviewed journals. We aimed to evaluate: (i) whether COVID-19-related preprints were favored for publication, (ii) preprinting trends and public discussion of the preprints, and (iii) the relationship between the publication topic (COVID-19-related or not) and quality issues.MethodsManuscripts deposited at bioRxiv and medRxiv between January 1 and September 27 were assessed for the probability of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and those published were evaluated for submission-to-acceptance time. The extent of public discussion was assessed based on Altmetric and Disqus data. The Retraction Watch Database and PubMed were used to explore the retraction of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 articles and preprints.ResultsWith adjustment for the preprinting server and number of deposited versions, COVID-19-related preprints were more likely to be published within 120 days since the deposition of the first version (OR=2.04, 95%CI 1.87-2.23) as well as over the entire observed period (OR=1.42, 95%CI 1.33-1.52). Submission-to-acceptance was by 38.67 days (95%CI 34.96-42.39) shorter for COVID-19 articles. Public discussion of preprints was modest and COVID-19 articles were overrepresented in the pool of retracted articles in 2020.ConclusionCurrent data suggest a preference for publication of COVID-19-related preprints over the observed period.

Open science and preprints have invited a larger audience of readers, especially during the pandemic. Consequently, communicating the limitations and uncertainties of research to a broader public has become important over the entire information lifecycle. This paper brings together reports from the NISO Plus 2021 conference session “Misinformation and truth: from fake news to retractions to preprints”. We discuss the validation and verification of scientific information at the preprint stage in order to support sound and open science standards, at the publication stage in order to limit the spread of retracted research, and after publication, to fight fake news about health-related research by mining open access content.

This editorial gives an overview of 20 years of the LIDA (Libraries in the Digital Age) conference held jointly by the University of Zadar, Department of Information sciences, University of Osijek, Department of information sciences, and Rutgers University, USA. This paper gives a short overview of the selected papers included in the proceedings of the LIDA2021 conference held in May 2021.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the research productivity of library and information science (LIS) authors affiliated with the 22 countries of the Arab League. It also identifies the top countries, organizations, authors, journals, natures of collaboration, and frequently used keywords in LIS research in the Arab world. Design/methodology/approach Bibliometric methods were used to evaluate the research performance of the authors affiliated with library organizations in the Arab region. The Elsevier Scopus database was selected for data retrieval. A comprehensive search strategy was adopted to retrieve 863 publications contributed by LIS authors affiliated with the Arab countries. VOS viewer, Biblioshiny, BiblioAnalyitics, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel were used for data visualization and analysis. Findings This paper presents the dynamics and the state of the LIS research in the Arab region published between 1951 and 2021. The results of the study have highlighted an upward trend in the growth of the publications, especially in the past four years. The largest number of studies were published in the year 2020. The country-wise analysis ranked Kuwait and Saudi Arabia as the top LIS research producing countries with five and four researchers, respectively. The Kuwait University, the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and the Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University were the three most productive organizations. Academic libraries, social media, bibliometrics, information-seeking behavior, information literacy and knowledge management were identified as the major areas of interest for the researchers. Internet and open access were topics that had gained recent popularity, while the digital library, research data management, green librarianship, link data, cloud computing, library leadership, library automation and artificial intelligence were identified as areas requiring further attention. Furthermore, the single-author pattern was found to be the most preferred pattern. Practical implications The findings of this study would help prospective researchers in choosing the neglected areas of research that require further investigation. They would also help policymakers in identifying factors that need more attention and allocation of research funds. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first comprehensive bibliometric study that presents a holistic picture of the LIS research in the Arab region.

Rev. Dr. William Augustus Jones, Jr. was pastor of Brooklyn’s Bethany Baptist Church for over 40 years and a significant figure in the African-American community. In the mid-1970’s New Jersey radio station WFME approached him with an offer to have his Sunday sermons broadcast as The Bethany Hour in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets. Brooklyn College Archives has the Jones collection, which contains cassette recordings of several hundred of these sermons, as well as video recordings from the program’s short time on broadcast television. With no playback equipment for patrons, and concerned about the physical integrity of the recordings, the archives decided to digitize the materials. With a tight budget and no digitization expertise on staff, the archives applied for and won a Council on Library and Information Resources Recordings-at-Risk grant. Despite some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was made available to the public at the end of March 2021.

In a letter to the editor, Moussa (2021) questions the impact of review articles on the ranking and indicators of journals. Applied to the management and economics FT50 journals (Fassin Scientometr 126:5911–5943, 2021), the analysis reveals that this bias is rather limited. Except for a few journals identified by Moussa, the ranking of the journal’s h-indexes does not alter significantly.

In this article, Ms Yihang Chen with her supervisor, Prof Lihong Zhou, reports on her MA in Library Science study aimed to identify user requirements of library research support services (RSS) at the universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in China. This study adopted an inductive qualitative approach, employed as a case study and 14 TCM researchers and academic librarians using semi-structured interviews. The research findings point to 28 RSS requirements in five main themes: mastering, planning, project, publication and electronic preservation stages. Although this research is situated in China, it has implications for libraries worldwide in supporting research into holistic and indigenous medicine. F.J.

Every institution needs repositories for storing, organizing, and presenting digital content, as well as maintaining digital resources for long-term digital access. The authors discussed India’s OpenDOAR status, a quality-assured listing of open-access repositories globally, with a particular emphasis on the Shodhganga repository. The focus of this paper is on universities in Northeast India that deposit Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) in the Shodhganga repository. This study depicts repositories in India since their inception. The Northeastern states are given special treatment by the Central Government and INFLIBNET in the form of Planners (Promotion of Library Automation and Networking in North Eastern Region). The study’s main goals are to disclose the knowledge outcome as well as the knowledge gap that exists in this geographical location. The study helps determine the number of universities in Northeast India that follow the “University Grants Commission (UGC) Minimum Standards & Procedure for Award of M.Phil. / Ph.D. Degree, Regulation, 2009,” which mandated that electronic version of Theses be uploaded to the Shodhganga repository for the benefit of scholars across the country.

The scientific community considers readership analysis of academic artifacts to be a significant endeavor. The reference manager’s readership count is a momentous indication for early research evaluation. In response, this study demonstrates the characteristics of Mendeley readership for EPS articles from twelve narrow disciplines and compares them with citations. The bibliographic and citation data have been collected from Scopus and the corresponding readers’ data from Mendeley. The Spearman correlation was performed among citations and readers for all unique articles for all investigated disciplines. Further, we also looked at the relationships between articles with non-zero readers, as well as articles satisfied by percentile ranking of the top 75 per cent, 50 per cent, and 25 per cen treaders. The result indicates large correlations among citations and readers (avg. 0.669) for all investigated disciplines. If we analysed only non-zero readers, as well as a percentile ranking of articles, the correlation results show a decreasing trend. Around 98.57 per cent of articles have at least one reader in Mendeley and AS (97.53 %) discipline has registered the highest one. The CES discipline had registered the largest MRS of 32.25 and MCS of 12.75. Most of the readers come from post-doctoral students and Ph.D. students. The correlation results indicate that the readership statistics should be used as an impact indicator for EPS discipline.

This paper provides a quantitative assessment of research output in SAARC countries in the domain of Fishery Science. The primary data for this study have been sourced from Scopus database for the period 1994 to 2021. The findings of the study highlight that a total of 1190 publications of different forms are available with 8820 citations with an average citation per year per document of 1.732 and annual growth of 4 articles per year in the 28 years window. The growth rate of publication is found to be highly consistent. A total of 4784 authors contributed their research items in the period of study and the number of multi-authored or collaborated works are found to be maximum (4750) and only 34 publications are found to be single-authored with a degree of collaboration of 0.99. India is the leading nation among the other SAARC nations with 75.97% of the publication (904 publications) and 8164 citations to those publications. Khan, MA is found to be the author with the highest number of publications (35) but Harikrishnan, R is the most influential author (highest g-index = 27) with 1100 total citations in 27 publications.Aquaculture Research is the journal with maximum publications (66). There exists a significant correlation between h-index and g-index in authors and journals.

Purpose This paper aims to analyse the research contributions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the field of applied linguistics (AL) indexed in the Web of Science core collection for the period between 2011 and 2020. Design/methodology/approach The author searched key terms in the Social Science Citation Index and Science Citation Index Expanded categories that publish documents in AL. The author compiled the data, classified these documents according to their research focus and investigated different metrics such as keywords analysis, citation analysis, overseas collaboration and productivity over authors, institutions and sources by using VOSviewer and Excel sheet. Findings Results found that publications in Saudi Arabia have tremendously increased around three times in the years 2016–2020 than before. As unexpected, highly cited researchers, sources and institutions for the social science and arts and humanities disciplines were higher than the scientific disciplines that investigated linguistic issues such as neurology, audiology and computer science. The area of language teaching and learning was the most researched area in which the highly cited author, journals and keywords analysis metrics occurred within its scope. The highly cited articles were those that collaborated with the world contributing authors and acted as corresponding authors. Originality/value The study contributes to the body of literature of AL which shares other categories that investigated language as a central issue. The study provides a fine-grained picture about the research productivity of AL in scientific and social science categories in Saudi Arabia.

PurposeThe Method section of research articles offers an important space for researchers to describe their research processes and research objects they utilize. To understand the relationship between these research materials and their representations in scientific publications, this paper offers a quantitative examination of the citation contexts of the most frequently cited references in the Method section of the paper sample, many of which belong to the category of research material objects.Design/methodology/approachIn this research, the authors assessed the extent to which these references appear in the Method section, which is regarded as an indicator of the instrumentality of the reference. The authors also examined how this central measurement is connected to its other citation contexts, such as key linguistic attributes and verbs that are used in citation sentences.FindingsThe authors found that a series of key linguistic attributes can be used to predict the instrumentality of a reference. The use of self-mention phrases and the readability score of the citances are especially strong predictors, along with boosters and hedges, the two measurements that were not included in the final model.Research limitations/implicationsThis research focuses on a single research domain, psychology, which limits the understanding of how research material objects are cited in different research domains or interdisciplinary research contexts. Moreover, this research is based on 200 frequently cited references, which are unable to represent all references cited in psychological publications.Practical implicationsWith the identified relationship between instrumental citation contexts and other characteristics of citation sentences, this research opens the possibility of more accurately identifying research material objects from scientific references, the most accessible scholarly data.Originality/valueThis is the first large-scale, quantitative analysis of the linguistic features of citations to research material objects. Purpose This study aims to find out the India’s research contribution to world Library and Information Science (LIS) literature from 2011 to 2020. Attempt has been made to reflect both the number of research articles published by the Indian LIS researchers during the past decade and the percentage share of Indian LIS researchers to the world LIS literature. Attempt has also been made to reflect the 20 leading LIS researchers from India, 20 leading LIS journals in which Indian LIS researchers mostly prefer to publish their research results and leading LIS research institutions and more. Design/methodology/approach The scope of the study is limited to library and information research undertaken across the world in general and India in particular during the past decade, viz., 2011–20. To undertake the present study, data were retrieved from SCOPUS data source. The data were retrieved keeping in view the objectives of the study; accordingly, key words were framed and used to search the relevant data. Findings Overall 77,659 research articles were published in the subject discipline of LIS across the world during the past decade, viz., 2011 through 2020. During the period of study, LIS researchers from India contributed 3,562 research articles constituting 4.59% of the total global LIS research output. The USA emerged the leading LIS research country with 33.03% research contribution, while India emerged as the fifth largest LIS research country in the world. A total of 12.85% research articles from India were contributed by 20 leading researchers. Only two LIS research journals from India were found indexed in the SCOPUS, in which 18.10% research articles were published by Indian LIS researchers during the period of study. More than 80% research results produced by Indian LIS researchers were published in foreign LIS research journals, mostly published from the USA and the UK. A good lot of Indian LIS researchers prefer to publish their research results in open access research journals. Library professionals, teachers and scholars from University of Delhi and University of Kashmir were found more active in LIS research in India. Research limitations/implications India is one of the world’s popular LIS academic, research and practicing country and has more responsibility toward world LIS research, whereby India, apart from fulfilling its own LIS research requirements, has to meet out the global LIS research demand. Thereon, if it lacks on research front, which otherwise acts as a backbone in the survival of a subject discipline, the survival of subject discipline may become difficult. Social implications India is one of the most progressive LIS research countries in the world and is about to play a far greater role in propagating newer and modern library practices and services in the years to come. Originality/value Quantification of research output at regional level or country level is very common among LIS professionals; accordingly, the existing study adds to existing world LIS literature about the India’s contribution to world LIS research during the past decade.

LibGuides have been used by librarians at Cape Peninsula University of Technology since 2012 as a means of providing subject-based information to students, with quick links to selected resources and information supplementing information literacy training. Lecturers use the resources for preparing lectures and identifying learning materials, while researchers and postgraduate students use research support guides when writing their papers. As the worldwide pandemic caused a major lockdown, academic institutions in South Africa were closed and students sent home. However, students still needed to complete their studies, and librarians at Cape Peninsula University of Technology had to continue providing support to these students. One of the online services available was LibGuides. This article provides insight into the historical developments of LibGuides at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, the use of LibGuides during lockdown, and the experiences of a selected group of students and librarians.

This study investigates the potential of citation analysis of Ph.D. theses to obtain valid and useful early career performance indicators at the level of university departments. For German theses from 1996 to 2018 the suitability of citation data from Scopus and Google Books is studied and found to be sufficient to obtain quantitative estimates of early career researchers’ performance at departmental level in terms of scientific recognition and use of their dissertations as reflected in citations. Scopus and Google Books citations complement each other and have little overlap. Individual theses’ citation counts are much higher for those awarded a dissertation award than others. Departmental level estimates of citation impact agree reasonably well with panel committee peer review ratings of early career researcher support.

This paper studies academic in-group bias in the top five economics journals. We examine citation counts for articles published in these journals during the years 2006–2015, and compare counts for articles written by in-group members versus out-group members, where in-group status is defined based on whether at least one author shares the journal’s institutional affiliation. We find that authors affiliated with Harvard and MIT receive fewer citation counts when their articles are published at the QJE compared to other top five journals. Moreover, articles published in the QJE by MIT authors receive fewer citation counts compared to articles written by out-group authors. Authors affiliated with Chicago and the UK do not receive fewer citation counts in the JPE and REStud, respectively. These results suggest that in-group bias exists in the QJE, but not in the JPE or REStud.

Retraction is a mechanism for eliminating and correcting serious problems in the scientific literature and increasing awareness among members of the scientific community about unreliable literature. The objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics and reasons for retraction, analyze citations, and describe the scientific, altmetrics, and technological impacts of hematology retracted papers. Retracted papers were searched using the hematology category of the Web of Science database. The search yielded 101 retracted papers in WoS. Statistics methods such as frequency, mean, interquartile range (IQR), and Pearson's Correlation were used for data analysis. The findings showed the retracted papers were published in 28 different hematology journals. The majority of retracted documents were in Article type (n = 81). The mean time interval of the retracted papers from the first publication to retraction was 50.83 months. The largest number of retracted papers belonged to the United States (n = 46). The most frequently reported reason for retraction was misconduct (n = 55). The findings of this study provide a landscape into the characteristics and citations of retracted papers before and after retraction in addition to the scientific, technological, and altmetrics impacts of hematology retracted papers in the scientific community.

Purpose The Birmingham Black Radio Museum (BBRM) is a community museum and archives located in Birmingham, Alabama (USA) dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of Black radio. The BBRM fulfills this mission through educational programming, providing access to physical and digital materials and supporting emerging curatorial professionals. Through a reflective analysis of the BBRM, the authors discuss the relationship between preservation, public programming and professional outreach, the partnerships that enable these functions and how conceptions of community responsibility have informed the organization’s management strategy. The BBRM provides a context for isolating the factors which inform the emergence of community memory institutions, the challenges associated with managing decentralized information environments and considers how mentorship can operate as a form of capacity building. An examination of the BBRM provides a view of one institution’s approach to engaging community partners and audiences in achieving its primary goal of documentary preservation. Design/methodology/approach This analysis is informed by historical, case study and autoethnographic methods. Emphasis is placed on examining BBRM’s historical origins, primary functions and community mandates. Specific attention is given to examining operations, resources and strategies. Commentary and discussion are grounded by the professional experiences of BBRM staff and collaborators. Findings The operations of the BBRM, and the experiences reported by BBRM staff, are similar to those documented by findings in the community archives and museums literatures. Community mandates and institutional identify have strongly informed the BBRM’s mandates, strategies for engaging the public and establishment of strategic partnerships. Originality/value This reflective analysis documents the operations of one specific community memory institution. Though the experiences documented in this paper are common to many community archives and museums, this study contributes an additional data point, further contributing to the body of evidence necessary to support a more nuanced understanding of the role and function of community memory institutions and their management.

In his recent Scientometrics article, Fassin (2021) asked the following question: Does the FT50 journal list select the best management and economics journals? After collecting, calculating, and analyzing data about nine bibliometric indicators, Fassin responded to that question by stating that “[t]his bibliometric study confirms that the FT50 selection is able to identify the elite journals in economics and general management and most premier journals in the sub-disciplines”. In this Letter to the Editor, the author would like to highlight three major limitations in Fassin’s (2021) study: the first limitation is that the provided general ranking is biased towards journals that publish relatively more review articles. The second limitation is that it ignores Goodhart’s law. The third limitation is related to the very definition of a leading journal.

PurposeThis literature review explores the definitions and characteristics of cluster analysis, a machine-learning technique that is frequently implemented to identify groupings in big datasets and its applicability to library and information science (LIS) research. This overview is intended for researchers who are interested in expanding their data analysis repertory to include cluster analysis, rather than for existing experts in this area.Design/methodology/approachA review of LIS articles included in the Library and Information Source (EBSCO) database that employ cluster analysis is performed. An overview of cluster analysis in general (how it works from a statistical standpoint, and how it can be performed by researchers), the most popular cluster analysis techniques and the uses of cluster analysis in LIS is presented.FindingsThe number of LIS studies that employ a cluster analytic approach has grown from about 5 per year in the early 2000s to an average of 35 studies per year in the mid- and late-2010s. The journal Scientometrics has the most articles published within LIS that use cluster analysis (102 studies). Scientometrics is the most common subject area to employ a cluster analytic approach (152 studies). The findings of this review indicate that cluster analysis could make LIS research more accessible by providing an innovative and insightful process of knowledge discovery.Originality/valueThis review is the first to present cluster analysis as an accessible data analysis approach, specifically from an LIS perspective.

Método: por meio de pesquisa na base de dados Web of Science, verificou-se a existência de termos relacionados à ciência de dados, tais como “big data”, “data analytics”, “businesss intelligence”, “data mining”, “data warehouse”, “text mining” e “data science", relacionando-os a hospitais. A análise de dados pautou-se na técnica de análise de redes sociais. O período considerado foi de 2015 a 2019 . Resultado: “machine learning” e “electronic health records” despontam como assuntos relevantes. As interações mais expressivas refletem a inclinação da informática médica em assuntos relacionados à tomada de decisão, sistemas de informação para hospitais e unidade de cuidados intensivos. Sobre os campos científicos, nota-se a predominância esperada da área de saúde e dos domínios pertencentes ou fronteiriços à tecnologia. No mais, vê-se que a grande variedade de áreas encontradas acusa a natureza multidisciplinar do assunto, inclusive com importante participação da Ciência da Informação (CI). Em relação à geografia do conhecimento, observa-se um razoável grau de descentralização, havendo produções representativas na América do Norte, Europa e Ásia. Quanto aos veículos de publicação, destaque para os Studies in Health Technology and Informatics, que compreendem uma série de publicações. Os dois periódicos mais representativos da lista, integram, respectivamente, os grupos Springer Nature e Elsevier, grandes players do mercado editorial científico. Conclusões: por fim, evidencia-se a multidisciplinaridade existente em torno do assunto estudado e a relevância da tecnologia para o progresso das organizações hospitalares. Objective: to carry out the bibliometric analysis on the applications of Data Science in the context of hospital associations. Methods: Through research in the Web of Science database, it was verified the existence of terms related to Data Science, such as, big data, data analysis, businesss intelligence, data mining, data warehouse, text mining and data science, relating them to hospitals. Data analysis was based on the social network analysis technique. The period considered was from 2015 to 2019. Results: Machine learning and electronic health records emerge as relevant issues. The most expressive interactions reflect the inclination of Medical Informatics in matters related to decision making, information systems for hospitals and intensive care units. Regarding the fields, it is noted the expected predominance of the Health area and of the domains belonging or bordering on Technology. In addition, it can be seen that the wide variety of areas found accuses the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, including, with an important participation of Information Science. Regarding the geography of knowledge, there is a reasonable degree of decentralization, with representative productions in North America, Europe and Asia. As for the publication vehicles, emphasis is given to Studies in Informatics and Health Technology, which comprise a series of publications. The two most representative journals on the list are, respectively, members of the Springer Nature and Elsevier groups, major players in the scientific publishing market. Conclusions: Finally, there is evidence of the multidisciplinarity around the subject studied and the technology company for the progress of hospital associations.

Objetivo: o investimento em ciência é essencial para a promoção do desenvolvimento econômico e do progresso científico e social de um país. O artigo analisa o financiamento de pesquisa sobre a ciência aberta sob uma perspectiva cientométrica, partindo de dados coletados em base especializada. Método: utilizou-se como fonte para coleta de dados a base Dimensions.ai, mantida pela empresa Digital Science & Research Solutions. Realizou-se consulta em janeiro de 2020, por meio da interface de acesso restrito da base (Dimensions Plus), utilizando-se busca parametrizada com o termo “open science”, restrita aos campos “títulos e resumos”, com aplicação da opção ou filtro de financiamento. Resultados: identificaram-se os percentuais de propostas financiadas e os valores investidos no período analisado, projetos de destaque no período – tanto em termos de duração do financiamento quanto em valores investidos –, valores médios investidos, principais países e disciplinas afetadas pelos investimentos. Entre os países com mais investimento, destacam-se os Estados Unidos da América, Reino Unido e a Alemanha e, quanto às áreas, temos as ciências da informação e computação e sistemas de informação, respectivamente. Conclusões: os dados explorados puderam ser relacionados com aspectos destacados na literatura, além de viabilizarem uma análise do progresso do tema ciência aberta, apontando para a sua consolidação como área de estudo passível de financiamento.

Objetivo: propor uma estratégia para a identificação e análise de publicações científicas realizadas em periódicos de acesso aberto realizadas pelos indivíduos com currículos cadastrados na Plataforma Lattes. Método: no intuito de identificar as publicações em periódicos de acesso aberto, dentre todo o conjunto de publicações registradas em todos os currículos cadastrados na Plataforma Lattes, inicialmente, todos os currículos foram extraídos e armazenados localmente. Após, como validador para classificar o periódico que está classificado como acesso aberto, a relação de periódicos do Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) foi utilizada. Logo, com a verificação dos ISSN e e-ISSN de cada publicação com o conjunto obtido do DOAJ, as publicações foram categorizadas. Resultado: com a técnica adotada foi possível analisar, dentre os aproximadamente sete milhões de artigos em periódicos dos indivíduos com currículos cadastrados na Plataforma Lattes, aqueles que foram publicados em periódicos de acesso aberto. Conclusões: conclui-se que aproximadamente 27% das publicações foram realizadas em periódicos de acesso aberto. Além disso, também foi possível identificar com o conjunto caracterizado, quais são os principais autores tendo em vista a sua produção neste meio de divulgação, bem como, como algumas áreas do conhecimento tendem a ser mais representativas.

Objetivo: caracterizar a produção científica em Interação Humano-Computador (IHC) dos bolsistas de produtividade em Ciência da Informação do Brasil vinculados ao Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (PQ-CI-CNPq). Método: utilizaram-se técnicas bibliométricas para caracterizar o universo de 53 artigos publicados pelos PQ-CI-CNPq sobre Interação Humano-Computador. Resultado: apresenta como os temas relacionados ao domínio IHC foram explorados pela comunidade científica de PQs em Ciência da Informação. Dentre os resultados, os dados obtidos indicam que as publicações nessa temática aparecem a partir do ano 2001, não havendo publicações na década de 1990; que na temática de IHC na Ciência da Informação destacam-se os estudos em “arquitetura da informação”, sendo esaa a palavra-chave mais utilizada nos artigos analisados e há influência proeminente dos autores Morville e Rosenfeld nas publicações. Conclusões: os periódicos escolhidos para publicar sobre o tema são, em maior parte, bem qualificados pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes), o que, de certa forma, atesta a qualidade da produção, pela seriedade e legitimidade dos periódicos em que está publicada. Verifica-se que a IHC teve como temática mais representativa no âmbito da Ciência da Informação (CI), entre os PQ-CI-CNPq, a arquitetura da informação, podendo esta ser considerada uma temática basilar nesse universo, e que oferece suporte teórico e prático a outros conceitos e aplicações que também vêm sendo estudados, tais como usabilidade, acessibilidade e encontrabilidade.

Purpose The purpose of this investigation is to analyze information on the web and its preservation as the digital heritage of events related to climate change and the environment in Portugal and Brazil, thus contributing to web preservation in the Ibero-American context. Design/methodology/approach A theoretical and applied investigation using mixed methods to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data from three sources: the Internet Archive and the public collection of Archive-It, the Portuguese web archive, and a selection from collections compiled by a research group (UFRGS) on web archiving and digital archiving in Brazil. Findings Web archive initiatives started in 1996; however, over the years collections have narrowed from nationally relevant themes to specialized thematic niches. The theme “climate change” has had an increasing impact on scientific and mainstream discussion in the 2000s, and by 2010 the over-arching theme became focused on digital preservation of web content, as demonstrated in this study. Failure to preserve data can lead to a rapid loss of climate change information, due to the inherent ephemerality of the web. Originality/value The paper demonstrates the relevance of preserving web content on climate change by showing what has been preserved to date and what will need to be preserved in the future.

Well-Known Institute of Management is situated in New Delhi, India, and offers a 2-year fully residential post-graduate programme in management (MBA). Dr. Vivek Gupta joined the Well-Known Institute of Management in the year 2018 as an assistant professor in the area of information technology and system management. He is also heading the IT team of the institute. The critical and unprecedented COVID-19 situation brought another challenge for Dr. Gupta and his team. Going virtual is inevitable. But which platform will serve the purpose of running the next academic session in virtual mode? The IT team proposed a three-stage process in deciding and recommending a plausible online platform for conducting online classes. In the first stage, requirements for conducting online classes are to be analysed and recorded. In the second stage, the options available in the market are explored followed by their assessment based on the requirements recorded in Stage 1. The IT team simplified the assessment by first mapping these requirements with 20 important functionalities of these five platforms. However, the outcome was not favourable. Not a single platform is meeting all the requirements. The IT team is back to square one. In addition, there are other major considerations that needed thorough analysis like managing the desirable behaviour from the users of the selected online platform. The next few months are going to be a real challenge for Dr. Gupta and his team in aligning the institute with a new norm in the upcoming academic year.

An academic research institution and a corporate hospital system formed a new graduate medical education (GME) consortium. The consortium objectives were to increase the scholarly activity of the residents and fellows in a national hospital system's GME residency program to match the requirements set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. A GME librarian position was created specifically to serve the GME research programs at Florida area hospitals to help with this objective. This paper describes the experience, activities, and lessons learned from the creation of an entirely new GME library program and librarian position for a nine-hospital region in Florida.
