To assess human health risks related to the environment, it is necessary to aggregate exposure from multiple sources. The objective of this paper was to propose a relevant approach to combine data from heterogeneous populations and methodologies. Five different methods based on Monte-Carlo simulations were tested and compared. Differences were: taking into account or not stratification variable, timeline to assign exposure factors and concentration and way to account for concentration correlations. The methods were applied to estimate lead exposure from food, dust, soil, air, and tap water or French children aged between six months and three years old. Comparing results' uncertainty, it is recommended to 1) select a reference population representative of the target population, 2) select stratification variables to combine surveys, and 3) simulate a new population by randomly sampling individuals in the reference population and simultaneously assigning human exposure factors and environmental concentrations from other surveys in integrating correlations (MC1S). No difference was observed when taking into account correlations using vectors of determinist data from one survey or rank of correlations with the Iman-Conover method. Regardless the methods used to combine data, dust was the main exposure source, followed by soil and in a less extent by food. Background: As a result of the ban on lead in gasoline on 2nd January 2000, the French population's exposure to lead has decreased in recent years. However, because of the acknowledged harmful cognitive effects of lead even at low levels, lead exposure remains a major public health issue. In France, few biomonitoring data are available for exposure to lead in pregnant women and newborn. The purpose of the perinatal component of the French human biomonitoring (HBM) program was to describe levels of various biomarkers of exposure to several environmental pollutants, including lead, among mother-baby pairs. In this paper, we aimed to describe the distribution of cord blood lead levels (CBLL) in French mother-baby pairs, and to estimate the contribution of the main lead exposure risk factors to these levels., Method: A total of 1968 mother-baby pairs selected from the participants of the perinatal component of the French HBM program were included in the study on lead. Lead levels were analyzed in cord blood collected at child delivery by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The data collected included biological sample, socio-demographic characteristics, environmental and occupational exposure, and information on dietary factors., Results: CBLL were quantified for 99.5% of the sample. The CBLL geometric mean was 8.30 μg/l (95% CI [7.94-8.68]) with a 95th percentile of 24.3 μg/l (95% CI [20.7-27.1]). Factors significantly associated with CBLL were tap water consumption, alcohol consumption, shellfish consumption, vegetable consumption, bread consumption, smoking, and the mother being born in countries where lead is often used., Conclusion: This study provides the first reference value for CBLL in a random sample of mother-baby pairs not particularly exposed to high levels of lead (24.3 μg/l). A substantial decrease in CBLL over time was observed, which confirms the decrease of exposure to lead among the general population. Due to the widespread presence and harmfulness of heavy metals in the environment, scholars around the world have evaluated the exposure characteristics and health risks of heavy metals. To understand the status, hotspots, and development treads of heavy metal health risk assessment research, we used bibliometric analysis tools to conduct scientometric analysis of the literature related to the health risk assessment of heavy metals in the Web of Science database from 2000 to 2022. The analysis results indicate that research related to heavy metal health risk assessment is rapidly developing in both developed and developing countries. China’s significant international influence in this field is worth noting, as there are many publications and highly cited documents related to China. France and other developed countries also play an important role in this field due to their high centrality and strong bursts. The results of co-citation cluster analysis and keyword co-occurrence analysis indicate that in the past two decades, the primary research domains and hotspots of heavy metal health risk assessment have been the study of heavy metals in soil, dust, drinking water, vegetables, fish, and sediment. There is a specific focus on bioaccumulation, bioavailability, source apportionment, and spatial distribution of heavy metals. The main types of heavy metals studied are lead, cadmium, mercury, and zinc. A procedure to determine lead and zinc by anodic stripping voltammetry and copper by cathodic stripping voltammetry in natural river samples was developed and validated. Cu determination involves the adsorption of Cu complexes with 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) onto a hanging mercury drop electrode. All samples were studied at natural pH and following optimal conditions were found: an accumulation step at -1.3 V (all potential values in the paper are given versus the Ag/AgCl, [KCl]=3M reference electrode) during 30s for determination of Zn contents and at -0.7 V during 60s for determination of Pb contents. Concerning Cu analysis, the optimal oxine concentration was found to be 10(-5)M with a deposition potential of -1.1 V during 30s followed by an adsorption step at -0.25 V during 15s. This procedure was afterwards validated by using certified reference freshwater and performing an intercalibration exercise. Finally the method was successfully applied in the Deûle River, highly contaminated by dissolved Zn and to a lesser extent by Pb and Cu, due to past and present activities of metallurgical plants. Under these optimal conditions, metal concentrations measured by our voltammetric procedures in the Deûle River were found in the range 12.4-23.2 nM for Zn, 1.7-3.2 nM for Pb and 4.9-7.6 nM for Cu., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Background: The French Nutrition and Health Survey (ENNS) was conducted in order to describe food consumption and levels of various biomarkers in the general population. In this paper, we aimed to assess the distribution of blood lead levels (BLL) in the adult population living in France., Method: ENNS was a cross-sectional survey carried out in the general population. Participants (18-74years of age) were sampled using a three-stage probability design stratified by geographical areas and degrees of urbanization. Collected data included biochemical samples, anthropometric measurements, socio-demographic characteristics, and environmental and occupational exposure., Results: In 2006/2007, 2029 adults were included in the survey on lead. The blood lead geometric mean (GM) in the population living in France was 25.7μg/L [24.9-26.5]. The overall prevalence of elevated BLL (>100μg/L) was 1.7% [1.1-2.3%]. Levels were significantly higher in males than in females, and increased with age, smoking status and alcohol consumption. Other factors significantly associated with BLL were leisure activities, occupational category, age of housing unit, birth place and shellfish/crustacean consumption., Conclusion: For the first time a survey provides national estimates of BLL for the adult population in France. Comparison with results from a previous study among men aged 18-28years showed that the GM dropped more than 60% in the last 10years. Although lead poisoning, through the ingestion of gunshot embedded in prey, is known to have been a significant mortality factor for several raptor species in the United States (Haliaeetus leucocephalus and Gymnogyps Californianus), very little published information is available concerning raptors in Europe. This paper presents the results of liver lead analysis from 222 raptors collected throughout France and reviews other published and unpublished European information. Of the 11 diurnal and 6 nocturnal raptor species investigated in this study, elevated liver lead concentrations, suggestive of shot ingestion, were found in 3 (Accipiter nisus, A. gentilis, Buteo buteo). The likelihood of a species to ingest shot appears related to feeding habits, with scavengers and predators that take game species the most susceptible. Raptor species at risk from lead poisoning, including some of high conservation value, are described, and future priorities for lead poisoning research and policy are suggested.

Simple Summary: Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men below 40 years old, and its causes remain largely unknown. Marked geographic differences in the occurrence along with the relatively young age at diagnosis suggest a possible role of environmental and occupational exposures that occur early in life, probably already during embryonic development. Using data from a French case–control study, we investigated associations between paternal occupational exposure to five heavy metals and welding fumes before and at birth and testicular cancer risk in sons. We estimated exposures from job titles and considered other potential risk factors in the statistical analyses. We found no association. Thus, further research is necessary to identify potentially modifiable risk factors. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men. Its causes are largely unknown, although prenatal occupational and environmental exposures have been suggested. We investigated paternal occupational exposure to heavy metals and welding fumes and the risk of testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) in their offspring. A total of 454 cases and 670 controls were included from a French nationwide case–control study. The INTEROCC job exposure matrix was used to assign occupational exposures (cadmium, chromium, iron, nickel, lead, and welding fumes) to the fathers' jobs. Odds ratios (ORs) for TGCT were estimated using conditional logistic regression models for frequency-matched sets. Three complementary analytical approaches were used: (1) single-agent analysis, (2) analysis by groups, and (3) principal component analysis (PCA). The proportion of paternal exposure to different heavy metals and welding fumes ranged from 0.7% (cadmium) to 11.3% (lead). Based on PCA, three principal components explained 93.5% of the cumulative variance. No associations were found between heavy metals or welding fumes and TGCT. The French waterway system consists of large navigable rivers and canals connecting many regions. Maintaining a safe navigation channel, in the Nord-Pas De Calais (NPDC) region in France, requires the regular removal of accumulated sediments which are often contaminated with zinc, lead, cadmium, and mercury. New legislations, such as the European Water Framework Directive (DCA, 2000), ensure that disposal should be reduced to minimal level and the waterways sediment should be treated. Such measures increase the research interest to find the potential costumers and create the need for establishing an efficient waterway sediment network. This paper discusses the design of a multi-modal supply chain network (SCN) in order to satisfy the demand of the treated sediments and to respect environmental, social and economic requirements. First, we reviewed models for strategic supply chain network design. After that, we proposed a multi-modal, single period, supply chain network design (SCND) model for waterway sediments problem using a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach. Then, results obtained solving a real case SCND model of French waterways (Voies Navigables de France: VNF) in NPDC region are presented. Linarite, PbCuSO4(OH)2, crystallizes as secondary mineral in form of clusters of crystals in Mine du Pradet at Cap Garonne in France. A tiny single crystal was isolated and its structure was refined from synchrotron diffraction data (λ = 0.049592 nm): P121/m1, a = 467.75(2), b = 563.48(4), c = 967.64(5) pm, β = 102.647(5)°, wR = 0.0544, 819 F2 values and 56 variables. The proton positions were also refined. The Cu2+ cations are located within Cu(OH)2 ribbons and exhibit pronounced Jahn-Teller distortion (d(Cu–O): 2 × 191.9, 2 × 197.3 and 2 × 252.8 pm). The Cu(OH)2 ribbons are condensed with the sulfate tetrahedra and the lead cations. The latter are coordinated to eight oxygen atoms in a slightly anisotropic manner. Calculations of the electron localization function (ELF) of PbO (litharge), PbSO4 (anglesite) and PbCuSO4(OH)2 (linarite) show pronounced lone-pair character for PbO but rather isotropic ELF values around the lead cations in PbSO4 and PbCuSO4(OH)2. Anthropocene mineral diversity is the result of the purification of metals naturally combined with other chemical elements in natural environment. Moreover, the advent of human mining and manufacturing mineral-like compounds has experienced a punctuation event in diversity and distribution owing to the pervasive impact of human activities. In this context, the wastes of an abandoned historical mine, Huelgoat mine (Brittany, France), famous during the eighteenth and the nineteenth century contain significant amounts of chemical elements potentially dangerous to the environment. Lead concentration and Pb-bearing phases were quantified in 7 sediments samples located from mine upstream to the Aulne estuary (100 km downstream to the mine). Results show very high concentrations of lead in the stations located upstream and downstream of the Huelgoat mine, using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, ranging from 7000 mg/kg downstream of the mine to a natural concentration of about 80 mg/kg upstream. At the same time, Pb-bearing phases were identified depending on the particle sizes, fine (< 50 μm) and coarse (> 50 μm), using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), total organic carbon (TOC), and pH analyses. Selection of plant species with a great remediating capacity and a high biomass production is an important step for depolluting soils especially mine soils. Hyperaccumulators are used in phytoextraction for extracting metals from soil to roots and to translocate them to aerial parts. While in phytostabilization that usually requires amendment, metals are accumulated in the plant roots. The purpose of this study is to investigate Oxalis pes-caprae L. tolerance to Pb and As from Pontgibaud mine soil in France amended with compost and/or biochar. Oxalis bulbils were harvested in three sites located around Algiers: (1) an agricultural land in Reghaïa, (2) an area planted with Pines at the USTHB university campus, and (3) the polluted bank of the El Harrach river. The small and medium bulbil sizes were selected from each locality. Concerning the experimental soil, five mixtures of Pontgibaud technosol (P) with amendments compost (C) and biochar (Bc) were prepared: PC, PBc5, PBc10, PBc5 C, PBcC (w/w). The results indicate that amendments alter the soil physico-chemical characteristics and the mobility of metal(loid)s. They also reveal that As and Pb are differently distributed in plant organs. Medium bulbils especially from El Harrach river and the university campus have shown a better growth. Seedlings growth rate has been the highest in Pontgibaud amended with PC and the lowest in PBc10. Natural lead dioxide samples (β modification) from Cap Garonne, Mine du Pradet, France and Mount Trevasco, Italy were studied by single crystal X-ray and electron diffraction, clearly manifesting the rutile-type structure. A needle from the Mount Trevasco sample was investigated on a single crystal diffractometer: P42/mnm, a = 495.81(10), c = 338.66(7) pm, wR = 0.0513, 117 F2 values (all data) and nine variables (293 K data). This review evaluates the sources of lead exposure worldwide. Studies from searches relating to sources of lead exposure in various countries within different regional zones were reviewed. Results indicated that in Nigeria, exposure sources include electronic waste, paint and batteries. In Mexico exposure sources include glazed ceramics, lead contaminated utensils and lead contaminated water, for India lead sources include cosmetics and traditional medicines. Sources of lead exposure in China include e-waste, traditional medicines and industrial emissions. In France, exposure sources included lead paint from older homes, imported ceramics and cosmetics and industrial emissions. Australia's exposure sources include paint, dust, imported toys and traditional medicines. Finally, in the United States exposure sources included paint, the industrial legacy of lead exposure and batteries. In high-income countries (HICs) the legacy of lead exposure keeps populations continuously exposed. In lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs), in addition to the legacy of lead exposure, lack of regulations or the inability to enforce regulations keeps populations exposed. Total lead (Pb) concentration and Pb isotopic ratio (Pb/7Pb) were determined in 140 samples from the Seine River basin (France), covering a period of time from 1945 to 2011 and including bed sediments (bulk and size fractionated samples), suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediment cores, and combined sewer overflow (CSO) particulate matter to constrain the spatial and temporal variability of the lead sources at the scale of the contaminated Seine River basin. A focus on the Orge River subcatchment, which exhibits a contrasted land-use pattern, allows documenting the relation between hydrodynamics, urbanization, and contamination sources. The study reveals that the Pb contamination due to leaded gasoline that peaked in the 1980s has a very limited impact in the river nowadays. In the upstream Seine River, the isotopic ratio analysis suggests a pervasive contamination which origin (coal combustion and/or gasoline lead) should be clarified. The current SPM contamination trend follows the urbanization/industrialization spatial trend. Downstream of Paris, the lead from historical use originating from the Rio Tinto mine, Spain (Pb/Pb = 1.1634 ± 0.0001) is the major Pb source. The analysis of the bed sediments (bulk and grain size fractionated) highlights the diversity of the anthropogenic lead sources in relation with the diversity of the human activities that occurred in this basin over the years. The 'urban' source, defined by waste waters including the CSO samples (Pb/Pb = 1.157 ± 0.003), results of a thorough mixing of leaded gasoline with 'historical' lead over the years. Thanks to its unique capabilities the ALICE experiment can measure the production of identified particles and resonances over a wide momentum range both in pp and Pb--Pb collisions at the LHC. In this report, particle-identification detectors and techniques, as well as achieved performance, are shortly reviewed. The current results on hadron transverse momentum spectra measured in pp collisions at √s = 0.9TeV and 7TeV, and in Pb--Pb collisions at √SNN = 2.76TeV are shown. In particular, proton-- proton results on particle production yields, spectral shapes and particle ratios are presented as a function of the collision energy and compared to previous experiments and commonly-used Monte Carlo models. Particle spectra, yields and ratios in Pb--Pb are measured as a function of the collision centrality and the results are compared with published RHIC data in Au--Au collisions at √SNN = 0:2TeV and predictions for the LHC. The compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector at the large hadron collider (LHC) is ideal to measure the heavy flavor production, especially, in the dimuon channels in high-multiplicity environment. Compared to the pp data scaled by the number of binary collisions, the yields of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ and ϒ(1S) in Pb-Pb collisions are strongly suppressed at √SNN = 2.76 TeV. In addition, the excited ϒ(2S+3S) states are also suppressed relative to the ground ϒ(1S) state in Pb-Pb collisions. These results consistently indicate a significant medium effect on the heavy-flavor production in heavy-ion collisions at LHC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Accelerator Project for Upgrade of LHC (APUL) is a U.S. project participating in and contributing to CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) upgrade program. In collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab's part of the upgrade includes several current lead design efforts. A concept of main and auxiliary helium flow was developed that allows the superconductor to remain cold while the lead body warms up to prevent upper section frosting. The auxiliary flow will subsequently cool the thermal shields of the feed box and the transmission line cryostats. A thermal analysis of the current lead central heat exchange section was performed using analytic and FEA techniques. A method of remote soldering was developed that allows the current leads to be field replaceable. The remote solder joint was designed to be made without flux or additional solder, and able to be remade up to ten full cycles. A method of upper section attachment was developed that allows high pressure sealing of the helium volume. Test fixtures for both remote soldering and upper section attachment for the 13 kA lead were produced. The Seine estuary (France) is currently one of the world’s most contaminated estuaries, due in particular to its high cadmium and lead content. Proper understanding of contaminant transfer, transformation and retention mechanisms throughout the estuary and up to the adjacent marine zone require a range of studies involving data collections, experiments, and modeling tool. A multivariable transport model (SiAM-3D) was used to simulate dissolved and particulate transport and it is applied to several calculation grids; a speciation model (MOCO) was used to select key species and obtain a schematic system representation. The coupled model for Cd and Pb was compared with field measurements. The complementary character of various tools (model applied to annual time scale, in situ measurements and experiments) allowed to explore and quantify various hypotheses on the high dissolved cadmium concentrations observed during low river flow. The target is to achieve a compromise between acceptable computing times and adequate result accuracy. Although particle and contaminant behaviour is globally well-reproduced by the coarse grid, calculation errors relating to bayward fluxes and stocks deposited inside the estuary were highlighted after comparison with the fine grid. The presence of large amounts of trace metals creates a hazard in some soils that is strongly related to the speciation of these metals. The aim of this work was to apply an operationally defined fractionation based on kinetics, which could distinguish “labile” (quickly extracted) and “non-labile” (or slowly labile i.e. slowly extracted) cations by using the extraction kinetics of trace metals by EDTA. This kinetic fractionation was applied to 10 unpolluted soil samples from Burgundy (France) in order to determine their labile concentrations of lead and cadmium. According to this method, cadmium was found to be more mobile than lead, with respect to both labile concentration and the kinetic constants. Moreover, it was also found that the labile concentration of cadmium was related ( R 2=0.6) to its concentration in wheat shoots; however, no such correlation was found for lead. The article presents a study which determines exoenzymatic and respiratory activities of a microbial community and to determine and compare the impact of lead and cadmium from bacterial cultures. It states that fluorimetry was sued to determine glucosidase activity and that the study site involves two rivers in Grenoble, France. It concludes that dehydrogenase activity in aerobic conditions prove to be better adapted than exoenzymatic activities.

Maneuver acceleration constraints for formation flight path planning based on the leader-follower concept are proposed. First, a minimum maneuver radius is derived to restrict the excessive required velocity over the minimum or maximum value. Second, in order to prevent an abrupt velocity reduction, which may cause large formation errors, a velocity reduction slope is derived to avoid a reverse-thrust command. Finally, we propose a scheme to put these constraints on the leader's maneuver to obtain a feasible path plan for formation flight based on the leader-follower concept. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We study the pseudo-rapidity distribution of hadron multiplicities of high energy Pb+Pb collisions by using color glass condensate dynamics at LHC/ALICE in the fixed coupling case. It is found that after including the pomeron loop effects the charged hadron multiplicities at central rapidity are about 1500 for central Pb+Pb collisions, which are significantly smaller than the saturation based calculations, [?] 1700 / 2500 and compatible with that based on a study of multiplicities in the fragmentation region.
