This article focuses on the most recent writings of Don DeLillo, and in particular it analyzes three of DeLillo’s later works, namely The Body Artist, Point Omega and Zero K, as examples of a more meditative and reflective attitude towards the themes of time and image in his recent production. By studying how these books present the reader with a sort of suspended narrative time, I will read them in the light of concepts and notions drawn from the philosophy of Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze, in particular Bergsonian duration and Deleuze’s idea of the time-image. Reading DeLillo’s recent novels according to this philosophical framework enables one to consider the implications his writing draws between time and images in configuring the perception of time as an almost physical, substantial and non-subjective whole to be sensed and described through narrative and figurative strategies. Cet article propose une lecture de la production la plus récente de Don DeLillo et, en particulier, vise l’analyse de trois romans, The Body Artist, Point Omega et Zero K, ces livres représentant, par rapport à la production précédente de l’écrivain, des exemples d’une attitude plus réflexive et méditative à l’égard de sujets comme le temps et l’image. En analysant la manière dont ces ouvrages présentent une sorte de suspension du temps narratif, on tracera une connexion entre les descriptions de moments et de scènes plus contemplatifs et certains concepts dérivés des philosophies d’Henri Bergson et de Gilles Deleuze, notamment l’idée de durée bergsonienne et la notion deleuzienne d’Image-Temps. L’étude de ces trois romans de DeLillo dans un tel cadre philosophique permet de considérer toutes les implications que l’écriture trace entre le temps et l’image, en configurant et exprimant une perception du temps comme totalité physique, sensible et non-subjective, qui est perçue et décrite à travers des stratégies narratives et de figuration.

This article begins by proposing a very partial reading of Lookout Cartridge (1974) as a means of opening the way to a more comprehensive analysis of Women and Men (1987), an analysis which restricts itself, however, to a treatment of the main “man” of the novel, James Mayn, and in particular to his relation to his apparently suicidal mother. In doing so, it attempts to conceptualize various pastoral themes and intentions that appear in McElroy’s writing, thus finding a way of rendering an account of the author’s anti-paranoid stance with respect to science and technology, and enabling certain observations on the viability of an eco-critical approach to literature. The main objective, however, is an attempt to understand McElroy’s intention to “transmute” our technological fears without merely rejecting them, which involves a fundamental rethinking of the Art-Nature, Technè-Phusis conflict at the heart of the pastoral tradition. This rethinking, as it is deployed by the text of Women and Men, enables a critique of Western power and of its will to domination and destruction that appear infinitely capable of ignoring themselves. What McElroy’s pastoral ethos ultimately amounts to is a respect for the enigma of appearance in its difference from nature, an ethos which neither dominant modes of power nor eco-critical approaches to its catastrophic effects seem eager to acknowledge. Cet article commence par proposer une lecture partielle de Lookout Cartridge (1974) afin d’ouvrir la voie à une analyse de Women and Men (1987), une analyse qui se borne toutefois à une discussion de l’ « homme » principal du roman, James Mayn, et en particulier à la relation de celui-ci avec sa mère apparemment suicidaire. Ce faisant, certains thèmes et intentions liés à la tradition pastorale, qui apparaissent dans l’œuvre de McElroy, sont abordés dans l’optique de rendre compte de l’attitude de l’auteur vis-à-vis de la science et de la technologie modernes, ce qui permettra par ailleurs quelques observations à propos du bien-fondé des approches éco-critiques de la littérature. L’objectif principal, cependant, consiste en une tentative de comprendre l’intention, telle que la formule McElroy, de « transmuer » nos craintes technologiques au lieu de simplement les fuir, intention qui implique la nécessité de repenser de manière fondamentale le conflit Art-Nature, Technè-Phusis, qui est au cœur de la tradition pastorale. Cette pensée, telle qu’elle se déploie dans le corpus de Women and Men, permet à son tour une critique fondamentale de la volonté de puissance occidentale et d’une volonté de domination et de destruction qui semblent infiniment capables de s’ignorer. Influenced by Nietzsche, Graham opposed the repressive forces of a Puritan “priestly mode of valuation” to a life-affirming, joyful urge in the soul that fosters creativity and doesn’t devalue the body. “Explaining is where we all get into trouble,” affirms Richard Ford’s anti-hero Frank Bascombe in The Sportswriter. Frank spends however a great deal of the novel explaining why explanation must be avoided, and why life must be not interpreted, but rather lived. This position may be compared to Nick Shay’s misological efforts, in Don DeLillo’s Underworld, to preserve a “wordless shock” before the world, or the renouncement of the search for meaning in Philip Roth’s American Pastoral (“He had learned the worst lesson that life can teach—that it makes no sense”). Such explicit protests against self-reflection may initially appear symptomatic of an anti-intellectual impetus within a society which views philosophy as a threatening limitation of the free American self. As challenges to a reductive, rationalizing and explicative logos, such novelistic discourses of resistance against the philosophical are highly self-critical, self-reflexive, and metatextual. They thus represent a solipsistic philosophy, with a history arguably as long as philosophy itself, which this article considers in specific reference to the fiction of Richard Ford, especially his 1986 novel The Sportswriter. Far from proposing the United States as an anti-philosophical culture, these discourses, as fictional incarnations of an ironic Socratic archetype, rather explore ways in which modes of reticence against philosophy, construed at once as an institution, mode of discourse, and epistemological method, are themselves explicitly philosophical positionings. « Explaining is where we all get into trouble », affirme Frank Bascombe, l’anti-héros du roman The Sportswriter de Richard Ford. Ces attaques explicites à l’égard de la réflexion sur soi peuvent apparaître, a priori, symptomatiques d’une attitude d’anti-intellectualisme propre à une société qui considère la philosophie comme une limitation menaçant le moi américain libre. Cependant, de tels discours de résistance à l’encontre du philosophique, en cela même qu’ils prétendent défier un logos réducteur, rationalisant et explicatif, se révèlent hautement autocritiques, réflexifs et métatextuels. Ils relèvent d’une philosophie solipsiste dont l’histoire est au moins aussi longue que celle de la philosophie, et que cet article interroge à travers les romans de Richard Ford, plus particulièrement The Sportswriter (1986). Loin d’ancrer les États-Unis dans une culture anti-philosophique, ces discours se présentent comme les incarnations fictives d’un archétype socratique ironique. Ils invitent à explorer dans leur pluralité les formes de réticence envers la philosophie – comme institution, modalité discursive et méthode épistémologique.

À l’heure du choix, cette journée d’études nous offre une présentation dynamique des différentes perspectives et problématiques auxquelles fait face l’Amérique d’aujourd’hui. Far from a mere partisan contest, the election of November 3, 2020 represented a moment of truth for a Republican presidency marked by the appearance and affirmation of “Trumpism” and a Democratic opposition on the path to structural and ideological reinvention ever since Donald Trump’s 2016 election. As the events of Minneapolis of May 25, 2020 and the passing of George Floyd revealed, America is in the thralls of a deep identity crisis. What are the options open to voters and, more importantly, what are the real issues that lie behind this historic election? At this historic juncture, this seminar gave us a dynamic presentation of the different perspectives and issues facing America today.

Starting from Giorgio Agamben’s observation that “the end of the poem” is threatened by generic indefiniteness, this article explores what occurs when, on the other end, the text refuses to begin, postponing its own formulation in favor of a never-ending foreword. Far from enabling an absolute contact between words and things that would settle once and for all the ambiguous relationship between reality and imagination, the seemingly close unit of the poem or collection, more particularly as it was expressed by American modernism, is thus jeopardized, the text being assigned to the virtuality of a “placeless place” (Aristotle; Agamben) where poetry and philosophy may meet. Refusing its own closure, the page of the poem, through the fluctuations of its contours and the engagements it stages, joins the tentative field of the essay, thereby abolishing generic categories as much as the Platonic scission between philosophical and poetical words. Partant du constat que livre Giorgio Agamben sur l’indéfinition générique qui menace « la fin du poème », cet article examine ce qui se joue en parallèle lorsque le texte se refuse à tout à fait commencer, différant sa propre formulation au profit d’un avant-propos sans cesse relancé. Loin de fournir le lieu et le moment privilégiés d’un contact absolu entre les mots et les choses, qui réglerait une fois pour toutes les termes du commerce équivoque entre réalité et imagination, l’unité en apparence close du poème ou du recueil, tout particulièrement tels que les formula le modernisme américain, se trouve ainsi remise en jeu, renvoyant le texte à la virtualité d’un « lieu sans lieu » (Aristote, Agamben) où faire se rencontrer poésie et philosophie. D’espace de clôture, la page du poème, par les fluctuations de sa circonférence et les élans qui s’y opèrent, se fait terrain d’essai où s’abolissent les lignes génériques autant que la scission platonicienne entre paroles philosophique et poétique.

The article explores a corpus of Hollywood Westerns spanning a fifty-year period between 1931 and 1980 in which Frenchwomen are prominent agents on the Western frontier. It suggests that while the American film industry has had a long-standing esteem for French culture, it was during the 1950s that Hollywood began to promote systematically positive representations of Frenchwomen in the Western. It proposes that a genre of “Frenchness Westerns” emerged in the 1950s as a sub-genre of commercially successfully “Frenchness films” (Schwartz 2007) such as An American in Paris (1951) and Gigi (1958). Issuing from a general climate of American post-war Francophilia, Frenchwomen in the “Frenchness Western” are intelligent and daring, even outdoing American male heroes. These women are understood as incarnating an “admirable alterity,” and are often compared to indigenous and Mexican women, sometimes aiding the latter in the sphere of interracial romance. These broadly positive representations of the Frenchwoman as agent and potential ally to other women would last until 1980 and Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate. This essay suggests that the commercial failure of this film seems likely to have had a hand in ending the presence of Frenchwomen in the Hollywood Western—Frenchness becoming synonymous with the financially unviable. Cet article étudie un corpus de westerns hollywoodiens qui couvre une période de cinquante ans entre 1931 et 1980. Le cinéma américain a toujours estimé la France, perçue comme le pays du glamour, du luxe et des Lumières. Néanmoins, c’est à partir des années 50 que des « westerns à la française » se développent en tant que sous-genre des « films à la française » (Schwartz 2007), genre filmique rentable, tels Un Américain à Paris (1951) et Gigi (1958). Dans un contexte de francophilie hollywoodienne, les Françaises dans ces westerns sont présentées comme des femmes intelligentes qui n’ont pas peur du danger, à tel point qu’elles surpassent le héros américain. Incarnant une altérité quasi-racisée et positive (« admirable alterity »), elles sont souvent comparées aux femmes mexicaines et indigènes. Elles promeuvent la possibilité du mariage interracial, habituellement désavoué par le western hollywoodien. Cette représentation positive de la Française, personnage fort de l’Ouest américain et alliée des femmes racisées, durera jusqu’à la sortie de La Porte du paradis de Michael Cimino en 1980. Il est probable que l’échec commercial de ce film ait contribué à la disparition de la Française dans le western hollywoodien.

This article discusses the relationships between Thomas Pynchon’s novels and the philosophy of chance and probability, especially in connection with quantum theory, which radically redefined our thinking concerning both concepts, and to begin with, the nature of physical reality. The article considers how different scientific theories dealing with chance and probability figure in Pynchon’s major novels, which, the article argues, helps us to think more deeply about Pynchon’s use of these theories or other mathematical and scientific theories, and about the relationships among literature, philosophy, and mathematics and science in general. Cet essai s’interroge sur les relations que tissent les romans de Thomas Pynchon avec la philosophie du hasard et de la probabilité, notamment dans son rapport avec la théorie quantique, qui a radicalement redéfini la façon dont nous pensons ces deux concepts, ainsi que, pour commencer, la nature même de la réalité physique. Cet article interroge la présence de diverses théories scientifiques traitant du hasard et de la probabilité dans les principaux romans de Pynchon, et cherche à approfondir la réflexion autour de l’utilisation que fait le romancier de ces théories et d’autres, qu’elles soient mathématiques ou scientifiques. Before puzzling over some possible conjunction between literature and philosophy, one has to agree on what such concepts mean. However, as soon as one wonders about their definitions, concepts like “literature” or “the novel” on the one hand, or “philosophy” or even “concept” on the other, prove all too elusive. If one thinks they know what a novel is, it proves virtually impossible to freeze a suitable definition of the aesthetic concept. The reason for that impossibility might be that philosophy’s mission, to the extent that it reflects upon concepts, is somehow to blur them. Yet this article aims to show that it is precisely in that sense that literature, through the example of the novel, is in itself philosophical to the degree that what defines the novel is a self-reflexive interrogation of what makes it so. With the example of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, the article concludes that there might be no intrinsic knowledge of our (aesthetic) concepts outside examples. Avant de s’interroger sur une éventuelle conjonction entre littérature et philosophie, encore faut-il s’entendre sur ce que recouvrent ces concepts. Or dès qu’on soulève la question de leur définition, les concepts de « littérature » ou de « roman » d’un côté, de « philosophie » voire de « concept » de l’autre, s’avèrent éminemment fuyants. Si on pense savoir ce qu’est un roman, en arrêter une définition acceptable s’avère quasiment impossible. La raison en est que la philosophie, en tant qu’elle s’interroge sur des concepts, a pour mission de les brouiller. Or, cet article vise à démontrer que c’est précisément en ce sens que l’écriture littéraire, à travers l’exemple du roman, est philosophique, puisque c’est aussi le propre du roman, à l’instar de To the Lighthouse de Virginia Woolf, de s’interroger sur ce qui le définit en tant que tel. The Water Cure and Percival Everett by Virgil Russell are two of Percival Everett’s novels that most overtly intertwine literature and the philosophical. They do so not so much by promoting philosophical theories as by putting to the fore that the literary text is a mode of becoming, a gesture of thought. By experimenting with language and form, these two novels participate in the advent of thought and meaning. The Water Cure et Percival Everett by Virgil Russell sont deux romans de Percival Everett dans lesquels littérature et philosophie ne forment qu’un corps écrit qui se dessine non tant dans l’exposition et l’exploitation de théories philosophiques que dans l’exhibition du texte littéraire comme mode de devenir et geste de pensée. This article investigates how the relation between poetry and philosophy is developed in a sample of reflections on the philosophical qualities of the American Modernist poet Wallace Stevens’s work. It offers a critical presentation of a handful of twenty-first-century published responses to Stevens’s poetry emanating from two different quarters: fellow poets and philosophers. The five selected poets (David Baker, Linda Gregerson, Carl Phillips, Stanley Plumly, and Carol Frost) collectively pondered Stevens’s philosophical qualities in a recent issue of the New England Review, while the responses by philosophers Alain Badiou and Peter Hare were published in collections of their essays. The two different angles are investigated precisely because they fall outside mainstream literary criticism on Stevens and help to dramatize several of the difficulties confronted by poets and philosophers seeking to find common ground. By pitting the voices of poets against those of philosophers, the article allows the reader to observe empirically how poets are often wary of addressing Stevens’s philosophical weight except by noting the formal and stylistic enactment of mental activity in his verse, while philosophers sometimes fail to acknowledge the intrinsic nature of lyric thinking, and thus do not always manage to contribute to a deeper understanding of the poetry as such. Cet article s’interroge sur la manière dont la relation entre poésie et philosophie se développe dans certaines réflexions sur la portée philosophique de l’œuvre du poète moderniste américain Wallace Stevens. Il dresse le portrait critique de certaines réponses proposées au vingt-et-unième siècle à la poésie de Stevens, qui proviennent de champs différents : poésie d’un côté, philosophie de l’autre. Les cinq poètes choisis dans le cadre de cette étude (David Baker, Linda Gregerson, Carl Phillips, Stanley Plumly, et Carol Frost) se sont collectivement penchés sur les ressorts philosophiques de Stevens dans un numéro récent de la New England Review, tandis que les réponses apportées par les philosophes Alain Badiou et Peter Hare ont été publiées dans des ouvrages recueillant certains de leurs essais. Soucieuse de divertir autant que d’instruire son jeune public et convaincue de la réussite par le travail, Alcott minimise la part d’exploitation et d’oppression pourtant manifeste dans les refuges pour garçons qu’elle décrit. Exempts de tout moralisme, ses récits présentent de forts échos biographiques avec la vie de l’autrice : son expérience de la pauvreté, son chemin vers l’abstinence et surtout un humanisme directement hérité de ses parents et de leurs actions caritatives. This article examines Louisa May Alcott’s tales based on her mid-1870s tour of philanthropic institutions for New York’s homeless boys. In an effort to make her lessons more palatable to her young readership and reflecting her own beliefs in the themes of self-improvement, Alcott often euphemizes the shelters’ evidently oppressive and exploitative dimensions. Devoid of moralism, Alcott’s tales also carry strong biographical accents, from her own experience of poverty to her own temperance journey and, most importantly, the humanistic spirit which she inherited from her parents’ own charity efforts.

The paper addresses the issue of education in art museums. It examines the first attempt to establish an art education project at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Firstly, the paper explains why MoMA based its original art education program on the fundamental ideas of John Dewey’s theories of progressive education. Secondly, it analyzes the grassroots of five progressive art education initiatives launched by MoMA’s founding Director of the Department of Education Victor D’Amico in 1937-1969. Il revient sur la première tentative de création d’un projet d’éducation artistique au Musée d’art moderne (MoMA) de New York. L’article explique en premier lieu pourquoi le MoMA s’est appuyé, pour son premier programme d’éducation artistique, sur les théories de John Dewey en matière d’éducation nouvelle. Il se consacre ensuite à cinq programmes d’éducation artistique progressiste lancés entre 1937 et 1969 à l’initiative de Victor D’Amico, directeur du département de l’Éducation. L’article en conclut que le projet éducatif expérimental de D’Amico, bien qu’il ne soit plus aujourd’hui pratiqué au MoMA, aura mis en avant la valeur de l’éducation artistique en tant qu’expérience sociale dans la pédagogie artistique contemporaine aux États-Unis et à l’étranger.

The aim of this paper is to explore the experience of exile in two folk ballads by Bruce Springsteen, “American Land” (2006) and “The Ghost of Tom Joad” (1995). The paper examines the aesthetic and poetic aspects of the two ballads. “American Land” tells the story of a new immigrant who settles in America and portrays it as a Promised Land. In “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” Springsteen suggests that ordinary people undergo a metaphorical exile that has led John Steinbeck’s protagonist Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (1939) to express his anger against the injustice of the Great Depression. L’objet de cet article est d’explorer l’expérience de l’exil dans deux ballades de Bruce Springsteen, « American Land » (2006) et « The Ghost of Tom Joad » (1995). Il sera question d’examiner les aspects esthétiques et poétiques de ces deux ballades. « American Land » aborde le thème de l’immigration aux États-Unis et propose le récit d’un nouvel immigrant qui dépeint son nouveau pays d’accueil comme une terre promise. Dans « The Ghost of Tom Joad », Springsteen suggère que les gens ordinaires en Amérique contemporaine subissent un exil métaphorique qui a conduit Tom Joad, personnage principal du roman de John Steinbeck Les Raisins de la colère (1939) à exprimer sa colère contre les injustices de la Grande Dépression.

La franchise My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic est célèbre pour son public « inattendu », un fandom composé en grande partie d’hommes adultes, et qui semble contraster fortement avec son public « cible » (les petites filles). Cette vision clivée invite à s’interroger sur les attentes et intentions des différents agents impliqués dans la production des récits, sur la façon dont ces attentes se manifestent et sur le type de comportements encouragés. En effet, MLP: FiM se situe à la convergence de nombreuses injonctions (commerciales, morales, idéologiques etc.) visant à construire un public spécifique. Les comics et dessins animés MLP: FiM sont une commande d’Hasbro visant à stimuler ses ventes de jouets pour filles, mais ils sont également tributaires de contraintes juridiques et idéologiques liées à leur statut de divertissement enfantin, destiné à préserver et éduquer leur jeune public. Par ailleurs, les équipes impliquées dans le développement des récits de MLP: FiM possèdent leurs propres attentes ; en particulier, il s’agit de remettre en question les stéréotypes de genre véhiculés par l’industrie du divertissement pour filles en inculquant à ces dernières des valeurs d’indépendance, de solidarité et de développement personnel. Cette prise de position est en fait au cœur de l’attraction transgénérationnelle de MLP: FiM et constitue le terreau dans lequel une communauté de fans plus âgés s’est enracinée, développant de nouveaux modes de consommation. Popular and academic discussions of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic often tend to contrast the “expected audience” of very young girls with an adult, mostly male “unexpected audience.” This polarizing view begs the question of what the various agents involved in the production of the series actually expect of their audience, and how such expectations are expressed through the material they produce and the type of behaviors they encourage. I argue that MLP: FiM is in fact the site of a complex combination of expectations (moral, commercial, and otherwise) that create a specific type of audience. Beyond their obvious commercial nature, the MLP: FiM show and comics are tied with ideological and legal concerns regarding the status of children’s entertainment, which is expected to protect and educate its audience. Moreover, the creators had their own set of expectations: they set out to question gender stereotypes by creating quality entertainment for girls that presented independence, solidarity, and individual development as positive values. The desire to reappraise girls’ entertainment helped create a franchise that was in fact transgenerational and encouraged different modes of participation, thus creating the conditions for the emergence of an older, more media-savvy fan audience.

This article focuses on a little-explored case of modernist collaboration situated at the crossroads between different arts: the performance of Alfred Kreymborg’s play Lima Beans, produced by the Provincetown Players in December 1916, in which poets Mina Loy and William Carlos Williams played the two leading parts, together with poet and artist William Zorach, who also designed the sets. The play’s novel aesthetics breaks with the principles of the realist dramas typical of the time and favored even by more experimental groups like the Provincetown Players. First, the article examines how the play creates a distancing effect towards the deliberately mundane story of a married couple, using incongruous elements like the proto-absurdist nonsense of the dialogues, the abstract, Futurist sets, and the groundbreaking acting techniques inspired by puppet theater. Second, it specifically focuses on the blurring of the boundaries between the different arts—drama, poetry, and dance among others—in this play, whose dialogues were conceived as free verse. Finally, it delves into the intertextual and intermedial dialogues between the play and Loy’s and Williams’s poems published in the little magazine Others, edited by Kreymborg. Cet article se penche sur un cas peu exploré de collaboration moderniste qui se situe au carrefour de plusieurs arts : la pièce Lima Beans, écrite et mise en scène par Alfred Kreymborg et produite par les Provincetown Players en décembre 1916. Dans cette mise en scène, les poètes modernistes Mina Loy et William Carlos Williams jouent les rôles principaux, accompagnés du poète et artiste peintre William Zorach, également responsable des décors. L’esthétique novatrice de cette mise en scène rompt avec les principes du théâtre réaliste typique de l’époque et prôné même par des groupes plus expérimentaux comme les Provincetown Players. Dans un premier temps, cet essai étudie l’effet de distanciation produit par la pièce envers l’histoire délibérément banale du quotidien d’un couple marié, à travers des éléments incongrus comme les dialogues proto-absurdistes, les décors abstraits aux touches futuristes, et les techniques de jeu inspirées du théâtre de marionnettes. L’article s’interroge sur les raisons de la confusion entre les catégories d’enfant et d’adolescent, et s’emploie à définir les critères possibles permettant de distinguer ces deux publics, en croisant psychologie, études culturelles et analyses internes des œuvres. Cet article propose une lecture de Motherless Brooklyn, publié par Jonathan Lethem en 1999, à la lumière de la théorie bakhtinienne du grotesque et du rire. L’originalité du roman tient à sa mise en fiction du syndrome de Gilles de la Tourette dont souffre le personnage principal, également narrateur à la première personne, qui s’approprie délibérément le surnom « phénomène de cirque » dont il a été affublé dans son enfance. Ainsi ce héros-narrateur joue un double rôle tout le long du récit : il est à la fois le phénomène grotesque qu’on exhibe sur le stand de foire, et celui qui exhibe et construit le phénomène en baratinant le public / lecteur. Lethem, de cette façon, remet en cause tant la représentation traditionnelle du handicap (et le stéréotype du handicapé) que les principaux genres dont s’inspire le roman : fiction policière et récit de formation. Le texte se fait parodie, au sens bakhtinien du terme, à la fois hommage à ces genres traditionnels et réécriture de ceux-ci. Lethem, enfin, utilise à la fois les tics et autres vocalisations symptomatiques du héros et son penchant pour les images grotesques et le rire, afin d’opérer un changement paradigmatique et transformer le stigmate en atout. Le romancier contribue ainsi à renouveler significativement la fiction consacrée à la maladie. This article analyzes Jonathan Lethem’s neuronovel, Motherless Brooklyn (1999) in the light of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the grotesque and laughter. The specificity of the novel lies the first-person narrator and leading character suffering from Tourette’s syndrome and appropriating the nickname “freak of nature” he was given as a child. Thereby, he plays a double role: he is both “the grotesque freak” exhibited on the platform / page, and the freakshow talker constructing the freak from his condition. The novel turns into a freakshow, not in the sense of the sordid spectacle of the past, but as a construction questioning both the social and the literary order. Through the grotesque and laughter, Lethem challenges the traditional representation of disability—and the stereotype of the disabled person—and also the major genres his novel borrows from: detective fiction and the coming-of-age narrative. The book turns into parody, in the Bakhtinian sense, i.e., both a homage to and a rewriting of traditional genres. Lethem also takes advantage of his narrator’s symptomatic verbal outbursts and penchant for grotesque images and word play to shift disability paradigm—turning stigma into asset—and revitalize illness literature.

By examining the ways in which Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone With the Wind (and the character of Scarlett O’Hara specifically) contests heteronormative, patriarchal, masculine constructions of Southern (ideal) femininity, this essay argues that Scarlett’s “ugliness” forces us to widen our perspective on Southern feminine beauty and purity and contributes to challenging the tropes of white Southern masculinity and femininity. The presentation of Scarlett is worthy of note because of the way it demonstrates the terrains of feminine difference and ugliness as complex (and enduring) fields for discussion. En examinant les façons dont le roman de Margaret Mitchell Autant en emporte le vent (et le personnage de Scarlett O’Hara en particulier) conteste les constructions hétéronormatives, dominantes et patriarcales de la féminité (idéale) du Sud, cet article propose que la « laideur » de Scarlett (mentionnée et décrite en détail dès les premières lignes du texte) contribue à remettre en question les tropes de la masculinité et de la féminité blanches du Sud. La présentation de Scarlett nous intéresse car elle démontre que les terrains de la différence et de la laideur féminines sont des champs de discussion complexes (et durables).

Based on studies about re-reading and Stanley Cavell’s reflections on the comedy of remarriage, but also on my own memories of seeing the film repeatedly, this essay will attempt to understand the reasons for this general re-viewing of Gone With the Wind.

As a family Covid-19 quarantine project, Combs recently created a short film, Gone With the Covid, a spoof of the classic film, Gone With the Wind. Beyond laughter and comic relief, is parody also a conduit of critique, or are certain topics—racism, the legacy of slavery, racial inequalities in epidemics like Covid-19—too serious issues to be parodied? The melodramatic genre gestures towards the expression of a morally and emotionally legible world (Peter Brooks). Robert Montgomery Bird’s The Gladiator (1831) and Robert Conrad’s Jack Cade (1841)—two plays that were awarded the Edwin Forrest Prize—are no exception and champion a democratic and patriarchal ethos that echoes the political ideal fostered by Andrew Jackson. Yet the conflicting temporalities at work in both plays problematize the teleological impulse that informs their revisiting of European history and undermine the possibility to venture a coherent typological interpretation of them.

In an interview with Gaumont’s artistic director Denis Peyrat, a journalist came to the conclusion that “film posters do not obey any miracle recipe.” However, when we consider the many posters of Gone With the Wind or when we talk about the film itself—a film that has survived the years and has never been the object of any remake—we can legitimately wonder if there are not any secret ingredients that would actually account for its longevity. From its very inception as a nineteenth century popular culture fad, the media presence of polka music has been crucial to its diffusion. In the 1940s and 1950s, polka enjoyed a high profile in American mass media. By the 1990s this presence was reduced to next to nothing. The advent of digital media has generated new platforms for the creation and sharing of polka music: internet radio, cable and satellite TV, and on-line videos. These new media have changed the nature of the interaction of communities of polka enthusiasts.
