Abstract

The Gamma-ray Large Area Space telescope (GLAST) is a gamma-ray satellite scheduled for launch in 2008. Before the assembly of the Tracker subsystem of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) science instrument of GLAST, every component (tray) and module (tower) has been subjected to extensive ground testing required to ensure successful launch and on-orbit operation. This paper describes the sequence and results of the environmental tests performed on an engineering model and all the flight hardware of the GLAST LAT Tracker. Environmental tests include vibration testing, thermal cycles and thermal-vacuum cycles of every tray and tower as well as the verification of their electrical performance.

Abstract

The Gamma Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a pair-production high-energy (>20 MeV) gamma-ray telescope being built by an international partnership of astrophysicists and particle physicists for a satellite launch in 2006, designed to study a wide variety of high-energy astrophysical phenomena. As part of the development effort, the collaboration has built a Balloon Flight Engineering Model (BFEM) for flight on a high-altitude scientific balloon. The BFEM is approximately the size of one of the 16 GLAST-LAT towers and contains all the components of the full instrument: plastic scintillator anticoincidence system (ACD), high-Z foil/Si strip pair-conversion tracker (TKR), CsI hodoscopic calorimeter (CAL), triggering and data acquisition electronics (DAQ), commanding system, power distribution, telemetry, real-time data display, and ground data processing system. The principal goal of the balloon flight was to demonstrate the performance of this instrument configuration under conditions similar to those expected in orbit. Abstract

The position- and energy-sensitive primary particle detectors of a nanodosimetry system are described. They consist of a telescope of silicon strip detectors, which allow the determination of the particle's position from the hit strip address and its energy from the specific energy loss. In our implementation, the energy loss is measured through the time over threshold (TOT). When testing the performance of a single silicon strip detector, it was found that between the energies of 20 and 100 MeV, primary particle energy could be determined to an accuracy of 15%, decreasing to 25% at 250 MeV Below 20 MeV, we observed TOT saturation. It is concluded that the performance of the tested silicon strip detector is suitable for application in nanodosimetry.

Abstract

The silicon tracker for the engineering model of the GLAST Large Area Telescope (LAT) to date represents the largest surface of silicon microstrip detectors assembled in a tracker (2.7 m 2 ). It demonstrates the feasibility of employing this technology for satellite based experiments, in which large effective areas and high reliability are required. This note gives an overview of the assembly of this silicon tracker and discusses in detail studies performed to track quality assurance: leakage current, mechanical alignment and production yields.

Abstract

The silicon tracker for the engineering model of the GLAST Large Area Telescope(LAT) has at least two unique features: it employs self triggering readout electronics, dissipating less than 200 mu-W per channel and to date represents the largest surface of silicon microstrip detectors assembled in a tracker (2.7 m{sup 2}). It demonstrates the feasibility of employing this technology for satellite based experiments, in which low power consumption, large effective areas and high reliability are required. This note describes the construction of this silicon tracker, which was installed in a beam test of positrons, hadrons and tagged photons at SLAC in December of 1999 and January of 2000.

Abstract

A large area (63.6 mm/spl times/64 mm) n-on-n silicon strip detector was fabricated, implementing various p-stop structures in the n-side. The detectors were characterized in laboratory and in beam tests. The inter-strip capacitance showed features in which the individual p-stop structure had the longest tail toward saturation. The beam tests showed other p-stop structures collected more charge in the mid-strip region than the individual p-stop structure. In addition, there was a source which lost or spread charge and induced noise where the over-depletion was insufficient.

Abstract

We report on the results from a beam test of a binary silicon strip system proposed for ATLAS. The data were collected during the H8 beam test at CERN in 1995 and at a beam test at KEK in 1996. The binary modules tested had been assembled from silicon micro-strip detectors of different layout and from front-end electronics chips of different architecture. The efficiency, noise occupancy, and position resolution were determined as a function of the threshold setting for various bias voltages and angles of incidence. Interstrip effects were also evaluated using a high resolution telescope. The performance of a prototype detector module irradiated to a fiuence of 1.2 × 10 14 p/cm 2 is also characterized.

Abstract

We have investigated the efficiency and the noise occupancy of a double-sided silicon strip detector, which was subjected to non-uniform proton irradiations up to a maximum equivalent fluence of 5/spl middot/10/sup 13/p/spl middot/cm/sup -2/. The depletion voltage, varying over time due to controlled annealing, was close to zero on one end of the 6 cm strips and 190 V at the high radiation end. We have determined the efficiency and noise occupancy on both n-side and p-side in a /sup 106/RU telescope, using a binary read-out system with 22 ns shaping time. The n-side exhibits superior performance after type inversion.

Abstract

We report the study of amplifier noise on silicon micro strip detectors. We have used a fast, low noise amplifier-comparator VLSI chip with 22 ns shaping time developed for the LHC to determine the noise at the pre-amp as a function of strip length and strip geometry, i.e., interstrip capacitance and ohmic strip resistance. In addition, we have tested the noise in irradiated detectors. We have compared the results with simulations using SPICE.

Abstract

A unique electronics system has been built and tested for reading signals from the silicon-strip detectors of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope mission. The system amplifies and processes signals from 884 736 36-cm strips using only 160 W of power, and it achieves close to 100% detection efficiency with noise occupancy sufficiently low to allow it to self trigger. The design of the readout system is described, and results are presented from ground-based testing of the completed detector system.

Abstract

The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory is a five-layer double-sided, AC-coupled silicon microstrip detector. It represents the crucial element to precisely measure the decay position of B mesons and extract time-dependent CP asymmetries. The SVT architecture is shown and its performance is described, with emphasis on hit resolutions and efficiencies.

Abstract

We present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay B0-->gammagamma using data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- collider. Based on the observation of one event in the signal region, out of a sample of 21.3x10(6) e+e--->Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays, we establish an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0-->gammagamma)

Abstract

Within its first year of operation, the BaBar Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) has accomplished its primary design goal, measuring the z vertex coordinate with sufficient accuracy as to allow the measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in the neutral B-meson system. The SVT consists of five layers of double-sided, AC-coupled silicon-strip detectors of 300 μm thickness with a readout strip pitch of 50–210 μm and a stereo angle of 90° between the strips on the two sides. Detector alignment and performance with respect to spatial resolution and efficiency in the reconstruction of single hits are discussed. In the day-to-day operation of the SVT, radiation damage and protection issues were of primary concern. The SVT is equipped with a dedicated system (SVTRAD) for radiation monitoring and protection, using reverse-biased photodiodes. The evolution of the SVTRAD thresholds on the tolerated radiation level is described. Results on the first-year radiation exposure as measured with the SVTRAD system and on the so far accumulated damage are presented. The implications of test-irradiation results and possible future PEP-II luminosity upgrades on the radiation limited lifetime of the SVT are discussed.

This paper describes the results of a beam test using the Engineering Model of the GLAST Large Area Telescope, which was installed in a beam of positrons, hadrons and tagged photons at SLAC. Abstract

The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) of the BaBar experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory consists of five layers of double-sided, AC-coupled silicon strip detectors. The detectors are readout with a custom IC, capable of simultaneous acquisition, digitization and transmission of data. The SVT geometry is shown and the construction phases of its modules are described in detail, with emphasis on the bending procedures needed for the arch-modules of the outer layers. Abstract

We report results from beam tests on silicon microstrip detectors using a binary readout system for ATLAS. The data were collected during the H8 beam test at CERN in August/September 1995 and the KEK test in February 1996. The binary modules tested had been assembled from silicon microstrip detectors of different layout and from front-end electronics chips of different architecture. The efficiency, noise occupancy and position resolution were determined as a function of the threshold setting for various bias voltages and angles of incidence for both irradiated and non-irradiated detectors. In particular, the high spatial resolution of the beam telescope allowed the evaluation of the performance as a function of the track location in between detector strips.

Abstract

A large area (60 mm/spl times/60 mm) n-bulk and n-strip readout silicon strip detector prototype was fabricated for the ATLAS SCT detector. Detector modules with a strip length of 12 cm were made by butting two detectors. One of the 12 cm modules was irradiated with protons to a fluence of 1.2/spl times/10/sup 14/ p/cm/sup 2/, and a beam test was carried out for the non-irradiated and the irradiated detector modules. Efficiency and noise occupancy were analyzed using the beam test data. High efficiency was obtained for both detectors in the bias voltages down to about half the full depletion voltage. Abstract

A double-sided silicon strip detector with a radiation-tolerant design was fabricated and characterized in a sequence of beam tests at KEK using 4 GeV/ c pions. The detectors were combined with newly designed, fast, lower power, bipolar amplifier-shaper-discriminator chips and CMOS digital pipeline chips to record hit-no hit signals in the strips. Efficiencies, noise occupancies, and spatial resolutions were measured before and after the proton irradiation at an equivalent fluence of 1 × 10 14 p/cm 2 , depending on angle of track incidence and strip-pitches. The median pulse height distribution, derived from the threshold scans of the efficiency, allowed to extract the response of the detector. A 1 T magnetic field enabled us to determine the Hall mobilities of electrons and holes.

Abstract

The solar-powered Electric Orbit Transfer Vehicle (EOTV) will transfer payloads from LEO to higher orbits, using hydrogen propellant and low-thrust arcjet propulsion to provide specific impulse in the range to 1,200 to 1,400 seconds. All the boiloff from the tank provides the vaporized propellant for the arcjet thrusters, with no boiloff being vented to space. The system consists of an insulated lightweight tank where the cryogenic hydrogen is stored subcritically at low pressure, a compressor to raise the pressure of the hydrogen vapor flow for the arcjets to the proper level, an accumulator, and mass flow controllers. The results of studies of the management of the tank pressure and liquid dynamics are presented.

Abstract

CROP residues in irrigation furrows reduce soil erosion caused by flowing water, increase infiltration rates and decrease irrigation uniformity. Data were collected in 1982, 1983 and 1984 in South Central Washington on the rate of advance in furrows containing various levels of crop residue. Continuous and surged flow furrow irrigation methods were also compared for application uniformity. The amount of crop residue affected the rate of advance. Continous and surge furrow streams advanced at approximately the same rates (in terms of elapsed clock time) for each residue level. Surge irrigation reduced infiltrated depths along the length of the furrow compared to the continuous flow treatments with the same residue levels. Because of the increased uniformity of application under various levels of crop residues, surge flow is preferable to continuous flow furrow irrigation.

Abstract

We report branching fraction measurements for exclusive decays of charged and neutral B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium meson. We use a sample of 22.72 +/- 0.36 million B anti-B events collected between October 1999 and October 2000 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The charmonium mesons considered here are J/psi, psi(2S), and chi_c1, and the light meson in the decay is either a K, K^*, or pi^0., 25 pages, 15 figures, 10 tables, submitted to Physical Review D

Abstract

The readout chip designed to process the microstrip signals in the BaBar silicon vertex tracker (SVT), after being realized twice in a radsoft technology has been transferred into the final radhard process. So far the circuit has gone through four different radhard submissions, one aiming at providing a preliminary insight into the characteristics of the radhard chip, the other ones constituting pre-production and production runs. Chips from these submissions have undergone a thorough set of tests addressing functional aspects, noise parameters and effects of radiation on signal and noise behavior. The present paper discusses the results of these tests and describes the final version of the circuit which has been proven to successfully meet the experiment requirements.

Abstract

The BABAR detector operated successfully at the PEP-Il asymmetric e(+) e(-) collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from 1999 to 2008.
