Density fluctuations in low-collisionality, low-beta ({beta} nearly equals 0.1%), currentless plasmas produced with electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron have been studied using a 2-mm microwave scattering diagnostic. Pulsed gas puffing is used to produce transient steepening of the density profile from its typically flat shape; this leads to growth in the density fluctuations when the temperature and density gradients both point in the same direction in the confinement region. The wave number spectra of the fluctuations that appear during this perturbation have a maximum at higher {kappa}{sub PRP}{rho}{sub s} (nearly 1) than is typically seen in tokamaks. The in-out asymmetry of the fluctuations along the major radius correlates with the distribution of confined trapped particles expected for the ATF magnetic field geometry. During the perturbation, the relative level of the density fluctuations in the confinement region (integrated over normalized minor radii {rho} from 0.5 to 0.85) increases from n/n >= 1% when the density profile flat to n/n >= 3% when the density profile is steepened. These observations are in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations for helical dissipative trapped electron modes (DTEMs), which are drift-wave instabilities associated with particle trapping in the helical stellaratormore » field. 5 refs., 5 figs.« less

Positive limiter biasing on the currentless Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron produces a significant increase in the particle confinement with no improvement in the energy confinement. Experiments have been carried out in 1-T plasmas with {approximately}400 kill of electron cyclotron heating ECM. Two rail limiters located at the last closed flux surface (LCFS), one at the top and one at the bottom of the device, are biased at positive and negative potentials with respect to the vessel. When the limiters are positively biased at up to 300 V, the density increases sharply to the ECH cutoff value. At the same time, the H{sub {alpha}} radiation drops, indicating that the particle confinement improves. When the density is kept constant, the H{sub {alpha}} radiation is further reduced and there is almost no change in the plasma stored energy. Under these conditions, the density profile becomes peaked and the electric field becomes outward-pointing outside the LCFS and more negative inside the LCFS. In contrast, negative biasing yields some reduction of the density and stored energy at constant gas feed, and the plasma potential profile remains the same. Biasing has almost no effect on the intrinsic impurity levels in the plasma.

An absolute calibration of an installed heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) energy analyzer is possible by detecting secondary ions that come from a source at a known location that is maintained at a known potential. It is also necessary that the magnetic field that exists during the calibration be the same magnetic field that exists when a plasma is present. These conditions can be met on stellarators, heliotrons, and torsatrons, which produce their magnetic configurations with external coil sets. Since no internal plasma current is required, suitable sources for producing secondary ions by interaction with the primary beam can be placed inside the vacuum vessels of these devices at known locations. Secondary ions can be produced by the interaction of the primary beam with thin films, gas box probes, electron beams, or neutral gas filling the vacuum vessel. Details of a spherical mesh probe that combines the advantages of several of these methods are given.

Recent experiments in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)] have been directed toward investigations of the basic physics mechanisms that control confinement in this device. Measurements of the density fluctuations throughout the plasma volume have provided indications for the existence of theoretically predicted dissipative trapped electron and resistive interchange instabilities. These identifications are supported by results of dynamic configuration scans of the magnetic fields during which the magnetic well volume, shear, and fraction of confined trapped particles are changed continuously. The influence of magnetic islands on the global confinement has been studied by deliberately applying error fields which strongly perturb the nested flux‐surface geometry, and the effects of electric fields have been investigated by means of biased limiter experiments.

Heavy ion beam probes (HIBPs) have proven to be a unique tool for measuring fluctuations and particle transport in tokamaks. They have been used to measure fluctuations in density, electric potential, and magnetic vector potential. The density and potential fluctuation measurements have determined the particle flux due to electrostatic turbulence in the TEXT and ISX‐B tokamaks. In these measurements, the frequency spectra (0–500 kHz) of the phase between density and potential, the wave numbers of the fluctuations, and the fluctuation level are obtained. Three topics are discussed in this paper. We present measurements of magnetic fluctuations during MHD activity using the TEXT HIBP. Analysis of these measurements indicates that the diagnostic is primarily sensitive to the local value of Aφ in the sample volume unless the local Aφ is small. Experiments involving plasma improvement, confinement scaling, bootstrap currents, and edge fluctuations have been carried out in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Fusion Technol. 10, 179 (1986)]. Average densities ne≤9×1019 m−3 have been obtained, with global energy confinement times τ*E≤20 msec. Confinement times generally follow the stellarator/torsatron empirical scaling law, τSL =0.17×P−0.58n0.69eB0.84a2R0.75 (with τSL in seconds, power P in megawatts, density ne in 1020 m−3, and plasma radius a and major radius R in meters). Gas injection during neutral beam injection (NBI) causes increases in ne, so that τ*E does not decrease during NBI. Edge plasma fluctuations are found to exhibit a mode change near the peak of the energy confinement time. Plasma currents observed during electron cyclotron heating have been identified as bootstrap currents.

During the last operational period of ATF, a heavy ion beam probe was used to make measurements of the plasma potential, potential fluctuations, and electron density fluctuations. Due to the limited operational time and resources these measurements were made primarily on ECH plasmas, although some neutral beam heated plasma data were taken. The general results of these measurements and a discussion of the possible mechanisms which could cause uncertainties in the results will be given. The diagnostic method will be outlined with an emphasis on issues related to the operation of a beam probe in a stellarator environment.

The efficacy and safety of lamotrigine (LTG), a new antiepileptic drug (AED), were evaluated in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study of 98 patients with refractory partial seizures. Each treatment period lasted 14 weeks. Most patients were titrated to a LTG maintenance dose of 400 mg/day. Seizure frequency with LTG decreased by > or = 50%, as compared with placebo, in one fifth of patients. Overall median seizure frequency decreased by 25% with LTG as compared with placebo (p < 0.001). With LTG, the number of seizure days decreased by 18% as compared with placebo (p < 0.01), and investigator global evaluation of overall patient clinical status favored LTG by 2:1 (p = 0.013). Plasma LTG concentrations appeared to be linearly related to dosage. LTG had no clinically important effects on the plasma concentrations of concomitant AEDs. Adverse experiences were generally minor and most frequently were CNS-related (e.g., ataxia, dizziness, diplopia, headache). Most were transient and resolved without discontinuing treatment. Five patients withdrew as a result of adverse experiences while receiving LTG, including 3 patients with rash. One placebo patient was also withdrawn because of rash. The addition of twice-daily LTG to an existing AED regimen was safe, effective, and well tolerated in these medically refractory partial seizure patients.

Electron cyclotron heating (ECH) experiments in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron exploit unique capabilities for external control of the magnetic configuration and long‐pulse operation. The ECH power deposition profile is determined from the change of the electron temperature profiles during ECH power turn‐off and from power modulation. The measured dependence of absorbed power on the magnetic field agrees well with that obtained from ray tracing calculations for first‐pass and multiple‐bounce absorption. In ATF, parameters of basic physics interest (magnetic shear, magnetic well/hill, and contained trapped particle fraction) have been varied dynamically during a single long‐pulse (up to 20‐s) discharge (dynamic configuration control). Varying a single physics parameter while keeping others fixed elucidates the parameter’s influence on plasma behavior. Modulation of the magnetic well significantly affects the plasma stored energy. This may be related to the observed electron density fluctuations, which are consistent with theoretical predictions of pressure‐gradient‐driven resistive interchange turbulence. Measurements of the electric potential with a heavy ion beam probe show positive potential in the core of typical ECH discharges and the presence of a velocity shear layer near the edge.

Recent experiments in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1990 (IAEA, Vienna, in press)] have emphasized the role of magnetic configuration control in transport studies. Long‐pulse plasma operation up to 20 sec has been achieved with electron cyclotron heating (ECH). With neutral beam injection (NBI) power of ≥1 MW, global energy confinement times of 30 msec have been obtained with line‐average densities up to 1.3×1020 m−3. The energy confinement and the operational space in ATF are roughly the same as those in tokamaks of similar size and field. The empirical scaling observed is similar to gyro‐reduced Bohm scaling with favorable dependences on density and field offsetting an unfavorable power dependence. The toroidal current measured during ECH is identified as the bootstrap current. The observed currents agree well with predictions of neoclassical theory in magnitude and in parametric dependence.
