Abstract: Beam-based feedback systems play an essential role in the operation of high energy electron-positron linear colliders. Ground motion, vibration and other disturbances can significantly alter the beam trajectory or degrade the beam quality. Feedback systems are required for long term stability and for case and efficiency of operation. Trajectory feedback for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) has been studied extensively to understand both the achievable orbit quality and the time response characteristics. More recently, these studies have been extended to evaluate performance in the presence of ground motion.

Abstract: The Gamma-ray Large Area Space telescope (GLAST) is a gamma-ray satellite scheduled for launch in 2008. Before the assembly of the Tracker subsystem of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) science instrument of GLAST, every component (tray) and module (tower) has been subjected to extensive ground testing required to ensure successful launch and on-orbit operation. This paper describes the sequence and results of the environmental tests performed on an engineering model and all the flight hardware of the GLAST LAT Tracker. Environmental tests include vibration testing, thermal cycles and thermal-vacuum cycles of every tray and tower as well as the verification of their electrical performance.

Abstract: A unique electronics system has been built and tested for reading signals from the silicon-strip detectors of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope mission. The system amplifies and processes signals from 884 736 36-cm long silicon strips in a 4times4 array of tower modules. An aggressive mechanical design fits the readout electronics in narrow spaces between the tower modules, to minimize dead area. This design and the resulting departures from conventional electronics packaging led to several fabrication challenges and lessons learned. This paper describes the fabrication processes and how the problems peculiar to this design were overcome

6. A database driven fast feedback system for the Stanford linear collider

Abstract: A new feedback system has been developed that stabilizes the SLC beams at many locations. The feedback loops are designed to sample and correct at the repetition rate of the accelerator. Each loop can be distributed across several INTEL 80386 microprocessors that control the SLC hardware. A new communications system, KISNET, has been developed to pass data between the microprocessors at this rate. The software is written using the state space formalism of digital control theory and is database driven. This allows a new feedback loop to be implemented by setting up the on-line database and perhaps installing a communications link. Eighteen such loops have now been implemented and this has measurably improved the performance of the accelerator.

Abstract: We have searched for supersymmetric particles in 528 Z decays with the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. We place 95%-confidence-level lower mass limits on degenerate squarks, nondegenerate up-type squarks, nondegenerate down-type squarks, charginos, pair-produced unstable neutralinos, and neutralinos from associated production. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The development of an electron cloud in the vacuum chambers of high intensity positron and proton storage rings may limit machine performance. The suppression of electrons in a magnet is a challenge for the positron damping ring of the International Linear Collider (ILC) as well as the Large Hadron Collider. Simulation show that grooved surfaces can significantly reduce the electron yield in a magnet. Some of the secondary electrons emitted from the grooved surface return to the surface within a few gyrations, resulting in a low effective secondary electron yield (SEY) of below 1.0 A triangular surface is an effective, technologically attractive mitigation with a low SEY and a weak dependence on the scale of the corrugations and the external magnetic field. A chamber with triangular grooved surface is proposed for the dipole and wiggler sections of the ILC and will be tested in KEKB in 2007. The strategy of electron cloud control in ILC and the optimization of the grooved chamber such as the SEY, impedance as well as the manufacturing of the chamber, are also discussed.

Abstract: The Fermilab Steering Group has developed a plan to keep U.S. accelerator-based particle physics on the pathway to discovery, both at the Terascale with the LHC and the ILC and in the domain of neutrinos and precision physics with a high-intensity accelerator. The plan puts discovering Terascale physics with the LHC and the ILC as Fermilab's highest priority. While supporting ILC development, the plan creates opportunities for exciting science at the intensity frontier. If the ILC remains near the Global Design Effort's technically driven timeline, Fermilab would continue neutrino science with the NOVA experiment, using the NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) proton plan, scheduled to begin operating in 2011. If ILC construction must wait somewhat longer, Fermilab's plan proposes SNuMI, an upgrade of NuMI to create a more powerful neutrino beam. If the ILC start is postponed significantly, a central feature of the proposed Fermilab plan calls for building an intense proton facility, Project X, consisting of a linear accelerator with the currently planned characteristics of the ILC combined with Fermilab's existing Recycler Ring and the Main Injector accelerator. The major component of Project X is the linac. Cryomodules, radio-frequency distribution, cryogenics and instrumentation for the linac are themore » same as or similar to those used in the ILC at a scale of about one percent of a full ILC linac. Project X's intense proton beams would open a path to discovery in neutrino science and in precision physics with charged leptons and quarks. World-leading experiments would allow physicists to address key questions of the Quantum Universe: How did the universe come to be? Are there undiscovered principles of nature: new symmetries, new physical laws? Do all the particles and forces become one? What happened to the antimatter? Building Project X's ILC-like linac would offer substantial support for ILC development by accelerating the industrialization of ILC components in the U.S. and creating an engineering opportunity for ILC cost reductions. It offers an early and tangible application for ILC R&D in superconducting technology, attracting participation from accelerator scientists worldwide and driving forward the technology for still higher-energy accelerators of the future, such as a muon collider. To prepare for a future decision, the Fermilab Steering Group recommends that the laboratory seek R&D support for Project X, in order to produce an overall design of Project X and to spur the R&D and industrialization of ILC linac components needed for Project X. Advice from the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel will guide any future decision to upgrade the Fermilab accelerator complex, taking into account developments affecting the ILC schedule and the continuing evaluation of scientific priorities for U.S. particle physics. Fermilab should also work toward increased resources for longer-term future accelerators such as a muon collider, aiming at higher energies than the ILC would provide.« less

Abstract: flexible tool for evaluating accelerator availability was developed as part of the US Linear Collider Technology Options Study. The linear collider designs considered were based on the GLC/NLC X-band and TESLA Superconducting proposals, but modified to meet the US physics requirements. To better model some of the complexities of actual operation, a simulation program was written, which included details such as partial fixes or workarounds, hot-swappable repairs, multiple simulta- neous repairs, cooldown periods before access, staged recovery from an outage, and both opportunistic and scheduled machine development. The main linacs and damping rings were modeled in detail with component counts taken from the designs, and using MTBFs and MTTRs from existing accelerator experience. Other regions were assigned a nominal overall failure rate. Variants such as a single tunnel or conventional positron source were also evaluated, and estimates made of the sensitivity to recovery or repair times. While neither design was predicted to be sufficiently reliable given present experience, the required improvements were estimated to increase the overall project cost by only a few percent.

Abstract: Keeping nanometer-sized beams in collision is an essential component in achieving design luminosity in a linear collider. The NLC stabilization strategy is conservative by including enough redundancy so that if some part does not work to specification or the incoming beam motion is worse than expected, the beams will still be kept in collision. We show simulation results with both realistic and pessimistic assumptions about the response of the ground motion, inertial stabilization, intratrain and intertrain feedback systems. By providing backup systems, and by allowing some systems to perform more poorly than design, it is possible to have a high level of confidence that the beams can be stabilized successfully.

This paper discusses the implementation details and the optimization strategies for interpulse beam-beam feedback.

Abstract: We analyze the probability of failure and the failure effects of the quadrupole and RF girder translation stages (''movers'') in the 500 GeV CM NLC Main Linac. In order to achieve its alignment tolerances, the NLC main linac will require a large installation of remote controlled translation stages with multiple degrees of freedom. In particular, each of the 591 quads in each 250 GeV main linac will be mounted on a magnet mover with 3 degrees of freedom (x, y, roll); each of the 2304 RF structure girders in each linac will be mounted on a girder mover with 5 degrees of freedom (x, y, roll, pitch, yaw). Simulation studies of main linac operation typically assume that all movers are operational at all times, in order to limit the complexity of the simulation. This is obviously not a realistic expectation for a system with so many components, especially when the number of sub-elements of each mover (stepper motors, rotary encoders, position transducers, cabling, control electronics, database, operator) are considered. The unavailability risk of the mover system is of particular concern for the NLC, since very few accelerators have ever been built with such a large fraction of its beamline hardwaremore » on remote-controlled translation stages. In order to predict the availability of the movers, it is necessary to estimate a few quantities, specifically: how often will a mover break (mean time between failures, or MTBF); how long will it take to repair a mover (mean time to repair, or MTTR); what is the performance ''hit'' which accrues when movers are broken? To answer the first two questions we used historical failure data from the two large mover systems at SLAC, in the arcs of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) and in the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB). For the final question, we can get some estimate from simulation studies of the NLC main linac in normal operation.« less

Abstract: Future Linear Colliders require nanometer stability of the beams at the interaction point. One approach to stabilising the beams is to use feedback based on inertial sensors (accelerometers/seismometers) to control the positions of the final focus magnets. Commercial seismometers developed for geo-science applications have sufficient noise performance (nanometer noise down to a fraction of a hertz), but due to their large size and magnetic sensitivity are unsuitable for use in a linear collider detector. We report on the development of a high sensitivity, compact, non-magnetic inertial sensor for this application. In addition to its use in linear colliders, the sensor is also expected to have application in vibration measurement and control in synchrotron light sources.

Abstract: The world HEP community has reached a consensus that a 500-1000 GeV linear collider should be the next large accelerator built. The technology needed to build both the accelerator and detector is far more advanced than anything we have done before. Some desired detector resolutions are a factor of two better than ever before achieved. Accelerator gradients will be as high as the ongoing R&D programs can achieve. The design luminosity is 10,000 times that achieved by the first and only linear collider. Ongoing R&D programs around the world are aimed at achieving the few nanometer spot size and stability and the reliability needed to achieve this luminosity.

Abstract: The neutral B meson lifetime is measured with the data collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring during the years 1999 and 2000, with a total integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb(-1). The decays B-0 --> D*- pi(+) and B-0 --> D*- rho(+) are selected with a partial-reconstruction technique, yielding samples of 6970 6240 and 55206250 signal events, respectively. With these events, the B-0 lifetime is measured to be 1.533 +/-0.034 (stat) +/-0.038 (syst) ps. This measurement serves as a test and validation of procedures required to measure the CP violation parameter sin(2beta+gamma) with partial reconstruction of these modes.

Abstract: We measure the B^0 lifetime τ_B^0 and the B0−B0[overbar] oscillation frequency Δm_d with a sample of approximately 14000 exclusively reconstructed B^0→D*−l+ν_l signal events, selected from 23 million BB[overbar] pairs recorded at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The decay position of the other B is determined with the remaining tracks in the event, and its b-quark flavor at the time of decay is determined with a tagging algorithm that exploits the correlation between the flavor of the b quark and the charges of its decay products. The lifetime and oscillation frequencies are measured simultaneously with an unbinned maximum-likelihood fit that uses, for each event, the measured difference in decay times of the two B mesons (Δt), the calculated uncertainty on Δt, the signal and background probabilities, and b-quark tagging information for the other B. The results are τ_B^0=(1.523^(+0.024)_(−0.023)±0.022)ps and Δm_d=(0.492±0.018±0.013)ps^(−1). The statistical correlation coefficient between τ_B0 and Δm_d is -0.22.

Abstract: It is pointed out that misalignments of quadrupole magnets and beam position monitors (BPMs) in the linac of the SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) Linear Collider (SLC) cause the electron and positron beams to be steered off-center in the disk-loaded waveguide accelerator structures. Off-center beams produce wakefields which limit the SLC performance at high beam intensities by causing emittance growth. A general method is presented for simultaneously determining quadrupole magnet and BPM offsets using beam trajectory measurements. Results from the application of the method to the SLC linac are described. The alignment precision achieved is approximately 100 mu m, which is significantly better than that obtained using optical surveying techniques. >

Abstract: In the Stanford Linear Collider the electron beam is accelerated from 1 to 50 GeV in a distance of 3 km. The energy is measured and corrected at the end with an energy feedback loop. There are no bends within the linear accelerator, so no intermediate energy measurements are made. Errors in the energy profile due to misphasing of the RF, or to calibration errors in the klystrons RF outputs are difficult to detect. Since the total betatron phase advance down the accelerator is about 30 X 2 pi , an energy error of a few percent can cause a large error in the total phase advance. This will degrade the performance of autosteering programs. A diagnostic program which generates and measures several betatron oscillations in the accelerator has been developed. >

Abstract: The SLAC Linear Collider now has a total of twenty-four beam-steering feedback loops used to keep the electron and positron beams on their desired trajectories. Seven of these loops measure and control the same beam as it proceeds down the linac through the arcs to the final focus. Ideally each loop should correct only for disturbances that occur between it and the immediate upstream loop. In fact, in the original system each loop corrected for all upstream disturbances. This resulted in undesirable over-correction and ringing. The authors added MIMO (multiple input multiple output) adaptive noise cancellers to separate the signal they wish to correct from disturbances further upstream. This adaptive control improved performance in the 1992 run. >

Abstract: A feedback system has been developed for stabilizing SLC beams at many locations. The feedback loops are designed to sample and correct at the 60-Hz repetition rate of the accelerator. Each loop can be distributed across several of the standard 80386 microprocessors which control the SLC hardware. A communications system, KISNet, has been implemented to pass signals between the microprocessors at this rate. The software is written in a general fashion using the state-space formalism of digital control theory. This allows a new loop to be implemented by just setting up the online database and perhaps installing a communications link. >

Abstract: In order to maintain a small emittance at the end of the linac, the tolerance on the trajectory deviations become tighter when the beam intensities increase. The existing two-beam trajectory correction method works well when the theoretical model agrees with the real machine lattice. Unknown energy deviations along the linac as well as wake field effects can cause the real lattice to deviate from the model. This makes the trajectory correction difficult. Several automated procedures have been developed to solve these problems. They are: an automated procedure to frequently steer the whole linac by dividing the linac into several small regions, an automated procedure to empirically correct the model to fit the real lattice, and eight trajectory-correcting feedback loops along the linac and steering through the collimator region with restricted corrector strengths and a restricted number of correctors. >

Abstract: We describe a simple hybrid numerical method for beam orbit correction in particle accelerators. The method overcomes both degeneracy in the linear system being solved and respects boundaries on the solution. It uses the singular value decomposition (SVD) to find and remove the null-space in the system, followed by a bounded linear least squares analysis of the remaining recast problem. It was developed for correcting orbit and dispersion in the B-factory rings.

Abstract: We present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay B0-->gammagamma using data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- collider. Based on the observation of one event in the signal region, out of a sample of 21.3x10(6) e+e--->Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays, we establish an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0-->gammagamma)

Abstract: Feedback systems are essential for stable operation of a linear collider, providing a cost-effective method for relaxing tight tolerances. In the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC), feedback controls beam parameters such as trajectory, energy, and intensity throughout the accelerator. A novel dithering optimization system which adjusts final focus parameters to maximize luminosity contributed to achieving record performance in the 1997-98 run. Performance limitations of the steering feedback have been investigated, and improvements have been made. For the Next Linear Collider (NLC), extensive feedback systems are planned as an intregal part of the design. Feedback requiremetns for JLC (the Japanese Linear Collider) are essentially identical to NLC; some of the TESLA requirements are similar but there are significant differences. For NLC, algorithms which incorporate improvements upon the SLC implementation are being prototyped. Specialized systems for the damping rings, rf and interaction point will operate at high bandwidth and fast response. To correct for the motion of individual bunches within a train, both feedforward and feedback systems are planned. SLC experience has shown that feedback systems are an invaluable operational tool for decoupling systems, allowing precision tuning, and providing pulse-to-pulse diagnostics. Abstract: A fast feedback system provides beam stabilization for the SLC. As the SLC is in some sense a prototype for future linear colliders, this system may be a prototype for future feedbacks. The SLC provides a good base of experience for feedback requirements and capabilities as well as a testing ground for performance characteristics. The feedback system controls a wide variety of machine parameters throughout the SLC and associated experiments, including regulation of beam position, angle, energy, intensity and timing parameters. The design and applications of the system are described, in addition to results of recent performance studies.

Abstract: The RF system of the SLC Damping Rings has evolved since tighter tolerances on beam stability are encountered as beam intensities are increased. There are now many feedback systems controlling the phase and amplitude of the RF, the phase of the beam, and the tune of the cavity. The bandwidths of the feedback loops range from several MHz to compensate for beam loading to a few Hz for the cavity tuners. To improve our understanding of the interaction of these loops and verify their expected behavior, we have simulated their behavior using computer models. A description of the models and the first results are discussed. >

Abstract: A search for pair production of stable charged particles from Z decay has been performed with the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. Particle masses are determined from momentum, ionization energy loss, and time-of-flight measurements. A limit excluding pair production of stable fourth-generation charged leptons and stable mirror fermions with masses between the muon mass and 36.3 GeV/c2 is set at the 95% confidence level. Pair production of stable supersymmetric scalar leptons with masses between the muon mass and 32.6 GeV/c2 is also excluded. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Using the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider, we search for decays of the {ital Z} boson to a pair of nonminimal Higgs bosons ({ital Z}{r arrow}{ital H}{sub {ital s}}{sup 0}{ital H}{sub {ital p}}{sup 0}), where one of them is relatively light ({approx lt}10 GeV). We find no evidence for these decays and we obtain limits on the {ital ZH}{sub {ital s}}{sup 0}{ital H}{sub {ital p}}{sup 0} coupling as a function of the Higgs-boson masses.

Abstract: We describe a search for the decay of the {ital Z} boson into pairs of doubly charged Higgs bosons with the Mark II detector operating at the SLAC Linear Collider. Each Higgs boson is assumed to decay into a same-sign leptonic pair. No event candidates are found in a sample of 528 {ital Z} decays. At the 95% confidence level, this result excludes the region of leptonic coupling {ital g}{sub {ital l}{ital l}}{gt}3{times}10{sup {minus}7} and Higgs-boson mass 6.5{lt}{ital M}{sub {ital H}}{lt}36.5 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} for isotriplet (left-handed) Higgs bosons. Isosinglet (right-handed) Higgs bosons are excluded in the same {ital g}{sub {ital l}{ital l}} interval and in the mass interval 7.3{lt}{ital M}{sub {ital H}}{lt}34.3 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}.

Abstract: Using the sample of neutral vector bosons (Z's) produced at the SLAC Linear Collider and detected with the Mark II detector, we search for the decay of the Z to a pair of particles, one of which decays to two charged particles. The observed number of Z decays with this signature excludes, at a confidence level greater than 95%, the decay of the Z to a pair of fourth-generation Dirac neutrinos with mass between 2.5 and 22 GeV, a decay length less than about 1 cm, and coupling to any of the first three generations of charged leptons. This is the first time the existence of such a lepton coupling to the ± has been excluded by a direct search. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The Mark II detector has been upgraded in preparation for its role as the first detector to take data at the Stanford Linear Collider. The new detector components include the central drift chamber, the time-of-flight system, the coil, the endcap electromagnetic calorimeters and the beam energy and luminosity measuring devices. There have also been improvements in detector hermeticity. All of the major components were installed for a test run at the PEP storage ring (√s = 29 GeV) in 1985. This paper describes the upgraded detector, including its trigger and data acquisition systems, and gives performance figures for its components. Future improvements are also discussed.

Abstract: A heuristic model is used to describe data collected by the UA2 experiment at √ s = 630 GeV . Distributions of the energy sharing between the leading clusters and the rest of the event are examined. The main features of these distributions can be described by a two-component model with soft, collective interactions dominating at low transverse energy and hard, constituent interactions dominating at high transverse energy. This model provides a simple picture of the emergence of two-jet dominance at SPS p p Collider energies.

Abstract: The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN {Mathematical expression} collider ( {Mathematical expression}=540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate with pT>15 GeV/c, we extract a clear signal resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector boson W±, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. We study the W production and decay properties. Further-more, we refine our results on the production and decay of the neutral vector boson Z0. Finally, we compare the experimental results to the predictions of the standard model of the unified electro-weak theory. © 1984 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: We report on a search for relativistic particles with fractional electric charge at the CERN p p colider, using a telescope of scintillation counters to detect particles with anomalously low ionization. Since no event survives the selection criteria, upper limits on quark production are deduced from this experiment. At 90% confidence level and in the limit of very light quarks with charge ± 1 2 and ± 2 3 they are 2.8×10 −6 and 5.6×10 −5 , respectively, per single charged particle. These limits increase rapidly with increasing quark mass and are nearly two and one order of magnitude better than previously measured by UA2.

Abstract: The production of very large transverse momentum ( p T ) hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s =630 GeV . The inclusive jet production cross sections exhibit a p T -dependent increase with respect to the s =546 GeV data from previous Collider runs. This increase can be described both by QCD calculations and by approximate x T =2 p T /√ s scaling. No significant deviation of the data from QCD predictions is observed at very large p T , placing a lower limit on the characteristic scale Λ c of a hypothetical superstrong contact interaction responsible for the binding of preons in the quark ( Λ c >370 GeV at 95% CL).

Abstract: The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS$\bar pp$ Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, whereK2 andK3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given.

Cross-section measurements are presented forπ 0 production (P T ≦15 GeV/c, |η|≦0.85 andP T ≦40 GeV/c, 1.0≦|η|≦1.8), for η meson production (3≦P T ≦6 GeV/c, |η|≦0.85) and for charged particle production (P T ≦10 GeV/c, 1.0≦|η|≦1.8). Results are compared with the predictions of QCD calculations.

Abstract: In this talk I will report some of the first results from the Mark II experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center e+e−; storage ring facility SPEAR. The first part will be devoted to a description of the Mark II detector and of its performance. Then I will show preliminary results on a measurement of the inclusive production of baryons $\left( {p,\,\bar p,\,\Lambda \,and\,\bar \Lambda } \right)$ over the centre-of-mass energy range from 4.5 to 6 GeV in a search for a threshold of charmed baryon production. Data on decays of charmed D mesons have been accumulated at the Ψ ″ (3770) resonance and first results will be given in part three from an analysis of about one-third of the whole data sample. Finally, we have observed, for the first time, evidence for η ′ (958) production in two-photon collisions. We have measured the radiative width of the η ′ through this process as will be discussed in the last part of this talk.

Abstract: It is a pleasure to be able to report substantial progress since the Los Alamos Workshop two years ago. A radio‐frequency model of a grating accelerator has been tested at Cornell, and extensive calculations compared with observations. Alternative structures consisting of either hemispherical bumps on a plane, or conducting spheres in space, have also been rf modeled. The use of liquid droplets to form such structures has been proposed and a conceptual design studied. Calculations and experiments have examined the effects of surface plasmas, and shown that in this case the reflectivity is low. However, calculations and observations suggest that gradients in excess of 1 GeV/meter should be obtainable without forming such plasma. An examination of wake fields shows that, with Landau damping, these are independent of wavelength. The use of near field structures to act as high gradient focusing elements has been studied and shows promise, independent of the acceleration mechanism. Beamstrahlung in the quantum mechanical limit has been shown to scale as (DN)1/3. Finally a proposal has been made to establish a facility that would enable ‘‘proof of principle experiments’’ to be performed on these and other laser driven accelerator mechanisms.It is a pleasure to be able to report substantial progress since the Los Alamos Workshop two years ago. Abstract: From a search for electron pairs produced in p p collisions at s = 550 GeV we report the observation of eight events which we interpret as resulting from the process p +p→Z 0 + anything, followed by the decay Z0→e++e− or Z0→e++e−+γ, where Z0 is the neutral Intermediate Vector Boson postulated by the unified electroweak theory. We use four of these events to measure the Z0 mass M Z = 91.9 ± 1.3 ± 1.4 (systematic) GeV /c 2 .

Abstract: The linac of the SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) Linear Collider (SLC) must accelerate three high-intensity bunches on each linac pulse from 1.2 GeV to 50 GeV with minimal increase of small transverse emittance. The procedures and adjustments used to obtain this goal are outlined. Some of the accelerator parameters and components which interact are the beam energy, transverse position, component alignment, RF manipulation, feedback system, quadrupole lattice, BNS damping, energy spectra, phase space matching, collimation, instrumentation, and modeling. The method to bring these interdependent parameters collectively into specification has evolved over several years. The sequence which is sued to turn on the linac from a cold start and produce acceptable beams for the final focus and collisions is reviewed. Approximate time estimates for the various activities are given. >

Abstract: The production of very large transverse momentum hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s = 540 GeV using a highly segmented calorimeter. The range of previously available cross sections for inclusive jet production is extended to pT = 150 GeV and the two-jet invariant mass distribution to mjj = 280 GeV with the largely increased data sample collected during the 1983 running period. The results are compared with the predictions of QCD models.

Abstract: We report the results of a search for single isolated electrons of high transverse momentum at the CERN p p collider. Above 15 GeV/c, four events are found having large missing transverse energy along a direction opposite in azimuth to that of the high-pT electron. Both the configuration of the events and their number are consistent with the expectations from the process p + p → W ± + anything , with W→e+ν, where W± is the charged Intermediate Vector Boso postulated by the unified electroweak theory.

49. Precise system stabilization at SLC using Dither techniques

Abstract: A data acquisition method has been developed at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) that provides accurate beam parameter information using sub-tolerance excitation and synchronized detection. This is being applied to several SLC sub-systems to provide high speed feedback on beam parameters such as linac output energy spread. The method has significantly improved control of the linac energy spread. The linac average phase offset (/spl phi/), used to compensate the effects of longitudinal wakefields, is adjusted /spl plusmn/1 control bit (about 0.18/sup ./ S-band or 20% of tolerance), in a continuous fashion. Properly coordinated beam energy measurements provide a measure of the derivative of the accelerating voltage (dE/d/spl phi/). The position of the beam on the RF wave can thus be determined to /spl plusmn/0.3/sup ./ in about 5 seconds. The dithering does not contribute significantly to the energy jitter of the SLC and therefore does not adversely affect routine operation. Future applications include control of the interaction region beam size and orientation. >

50. Thermal stabilization of low level RF distribution systems at SLAC

Abstract: Analysis of SLC accelerator operator activity, in particular control system knob turns, indicated poor thermal stability performance of the low level RF distribution system in the SLC injector and positron production complex. Daily drifts of up to 15/spl deg/ S-band delay, about 30 times the tolerance, were observed. In this paper we describe the tool used to track down and quantify operator knob turn activity, the low level RF distribution stabilization systems, and some fixes used to correct the problem. In order to identify poorly performing components, a beam timing or phase monitor diagnostic has been developed. Initial results from it are be presented. >
