Several new iridium based cyclometalated complexes were investigated as phosphorescent dopants for molecularly doped polymeric organic light-emitting diodes. Specifically, the complexes used in this study were iridium (III) bis(2-phenylpyridinato-N,C2′) (acetylacetonate) [ppy], iridium (III) bis(7,8-benzoquinolinato-N,C3′) (acetylacetonate) [bzq], iridium (III) bis(2-phenylbenzothiazolato-N,C2′) (acetylacetonate) [bt], iridium (III) bis(2-(2′-naphthyl)benzothiazolato-N,C2′) (acetylacetonate) [bsn] and iridium (III) bis(2-(2′-benzo[4,5-a]thienyl)pyridinato-N,C3′) (acetylacetonate) [btp]. Single layer devices of doped polyvinylcarbazole: 2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole give maximum external quantum efficiencies that varied from 3.5% for the ppy dopant to 0.4% for the btp dopant. Several different device heterostructure architectures were explored, and the best quantum efficiency of the devices reached 4.2% for the heterostructures.

We demonstrate efficient blue electrophosphorescence using exothermic energy transfer from a host consisting of N,N′-dicarbazolyl-3,5-benzene (mCP) to the phosphorescent iridium complex iridium(III)bis[(4,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,C2′]picolinate (FIrpic). By examining the temperature dependence of the radiative lifetime and the photoluminescence of a film of mCP doped with FIrpic, we confirm the existence of exothermic energy transfer in contrast to the endothermic transfer characteristic of the N,N′-dicarbazolyl-4-4′-biphenyl and FIrpic system. In employing exothermic energy transfer between mCP and FIrpic, a maximum external electroluminescent quantum efficiency of (7.5±0.8)% and a luminous power efficiency of (8.9±0.9)lm/W are obtained, representing a significant increase in performance over previous endothermic blue electrophosphorescent devices.

Cryogenic leak detection is critical to space missions, particularly for avoiding launch delays. The real-time, multi-location, early leak detection of oxygen and hydrogen down to ppm levels is extremely important for safety, reliability, and economic reasons. One of the significant challenges in meeting these requirements has been the drift effect that is caused by the exposure to extreme temperatures. This paper discusses the effect of the development of a sensor supporting matrix to improve the overall behavior of oxygen and hydrogen optical sensors at cryogenic temperatures. These achievements offer great advances in the fiber optic leak detection of cryogenic oxygen and hydrogen, specifically for space applications. Emphasis on operational conditions such as -150 K and vacuum environments, in addition to performance characteristics such as sensitivity (10 ppm) and response time (~ 3 sec), are addressed in this paper.

A near-white light-emitting polymer, consisting of hole transport (HT), electron transport (ET), and phosphorescent Pt functionalities, was prepared and utilized as the emissive layer in solution-processed OLEDs. The air-stable devices had a maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.6%.
