1. Protecting victims of international crimes: A reflection on the functional interpretation of the Statute of the International Criminal Court

Abstract: This study identified essential factors concerning the safeguarding of victims of international crimes within the context of the functional interpretation of the Rome Statute. The study examined the principal worldwide legal frameworks governing the protection of victims of these crimes. The study employed hermeneutic, system-structural analysis, comparative legal, and other methods. The analysis results indicated that the legislation of Kazakhstan lacks clearly defined norms that relate to the responsibility of the state to victims, as well as their right to adequate reparation, including compensation and rehabilitation, as mandated by the UN Convention against Torture. Kazakhstan and China have not ratified the Rome Statute, largely due to political considerations. Kazakhstanʼs accession to the Rome Statute could lead to the harmonisation of national standards with international demands concerning the rule of law and the protection of human rights, as well as strengthen global efforts to counteract the evils that threaten peace and security. It was also found that the lack of clarity in the normative terminology and methods of interpretation of the Rome Statute, as well as conflicts between different objectives, led to the use of a functionalist approach by the court in interpreting the Statute. This weakens its basic function of protecting peopleʼs rights, violates the competences of the participating states and interferes with the principle of national sovereignty. The study addressed the need for victimological prevention of victims of international crimes, which should include improving the practice of treating victims, revising legislation, and developing new structures and services. It is also essential to provide information about the methods of abuse and the diversity of victims through various media formats

Abstract: Proton radiography is a widely-fielded diagnostic used to measure magnetic structures in plasma. The deflection of protons with multi-MeV kinetic energy by the magnetic fields is used to infer their path-integrated field strength. Here, the use of tomographic methods is proposed for the first time to lift the degeneracy inherent in these path-integrated measurements, allowing full reconstruction of spatially resolved magnetic field structures in three dimensions. Two techniques are proposed which improve the performance of tomographic reconstruction algorithms in cases with severely limited numbers of available probe beams, as is the case in laser-plasma interaction experiments where the probes are created by short, high-power laser pulse irradiation of secondary foil targets. The methods are equally applicable to optical probes such as shadowgraphy and interferometry [M. Kasim et al. Phys. Rev. Abstract: A European consortium of 15 laboratories across nine nations have worked together under the EUROFusion Enabling Research grants for the past decade with three principle objectives. These are: (a) investigating obstacles to ignition on megaJoule-class laser facilities; (b) investigating novel alternative approaches to ignition, including basic studies for fast ignition (both electron and ion-driven), auxiliary heating, shock ignition, etc.; and (c) developing technologies that will be required in the future for a fusion reactor. A brief overview of these activities, presented here, along with new calculations relates the concept of auxiliary heating of inertial fusion targets, and provides possible future directions of research and development for the updated European Roadmap that is due at the end of 2020. Abstract: Fast ignition inertial confinement fusion requires the production of a low-density channel in plasma with density scale-lengths of several hundred microns. The channel assists in the propagation of an ultra-intense laser pulse used to generate fast electrons which form a hot spot on the side of pre-compressed fusion fuel. We present a systematic characterization of an expanding laser-produced plasma using optical interferometry, benchmarked against three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. Magnetic fields associated with channel formation are probed using proton radiography, and compared to magnetic field structures generated in full-scale particle-in-cell simulations. We present observations of long-lived, straight channels produced by the Habara–Kodama–Tanaka whole-beam self-focusing mechanism, overcoming a critical barrier on the path to realizing fast ignition. Abstract: Laser and beam driven wakefields promise orders of magnitude increases in electric field gradients for particle accelerators for future applications. Key areas to explore include the emittance properties of the generated beams and overcoming the dephasing limit in the plasma. In this paper, the first in-depth study of the self-injection mechanism into wakefield structures from non-homogeneous cluster plasmas is provided using high-resolution two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The clusters which are typical structures caused by ejection of gases from a high-pressure gas jet have a diameter much smaller than the laser wavelength. Conclusive evidence is provided for the underlying mechanism that leads to particle trapping, comparing uniform and cluster plasma cases. The accelerated electron beam properties are found to be tunable by changing the cluster parameters. The mechanism explains enhanced beam charge paired with large transverse momentum and energy which has implications for the betatron x-ray flux. Finally, the impact of clusters on the high-power laser propagation behavior is discussed.

6. Measuring the orbital angular momentum of high-power laser pulses

Abstract: In this article, we showcase the experimental results of methods to produce and characterize orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying high-power lasers. The OAM pulses were produced on the ASTRA laser of the Central Laser Facility using a continuous spiral phase plate. Three different characterization methods were then used to measure the OAM content of the beam. The methods that were used were a cylindrical lens diagnostic, an interferometric diagnostic, and a projective diagnostic. We further discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of each method in the context of high-power laser experiments.

Abstract: Shanghai laser electron gamma source (SLEGS) is an energy-variable gamma-ray source developed based on the inverse Compton scattering of 10640 nm photons from a 100 W CO 2 laser on 3.5 GeV electrons from the Shanghai Light Source. It produces gamma-rays in the energy range of 0.4–21.7 MeV with a flux of 10 5 –10 7 photons/s. A collimator system was designed to produce quasimonochromatic gamma-ray beams with a best possible bandwidth of 1.1%–4.4% and filter out the substandard gamma-rays. The collimator system composed of coarse and fine collimators, constitutes a critical component of the SLEGS. By Geant4 simulations, we show that the collimator system is effective in tuning beam bandwidths and regular dodecagonal beam spots at the target position.

8. Estimating discharge in gravel-bed river using non-contact ground-penetrating and surface-velocity radars

Abstract: Discharge measurement is a critical task for gravel-bed channels. Under high-flow conditions, the elevation of the riverbed changes significantly by intensive torrential flow. The stage–discharge relations commonly used for stream discharge estimation may no longer be adequate. The contact-type velocity measuring is also subject to measurement errors and/or instrument failures by the high-flow velocities, driftwood, stumps, and debris. This study developed a new real-time method to estimate river discharge in gravel-bed channels. A systematic measuring technology combining ground-penetrating radar and surface-velocity radar was employed. The rating curves representing the relations of water surface velocity to the channel cross-sectional mean velocity and flow area were established. Stream discharge was then deduced from the resulting mean velocity and flow area. The proposed method was examined in a steep gravel-bed reach of the Cho-Shui River in central Taiwan. The estimated stream discharge during three flood events were compared to the prediction by using the stage–discharge relation and the index-velocity method. The proposed method of this study is capable of computing reasonable values of discharge for an entire flood hydrograph, whereas the other two methods tend to produce large extrapolation errors. Moreover, when the computed discharge is used in 2D flood flow simulation, the proposed method demonstrates better performance than the commonly used stage–discharge and index-velocity methods.

Abstract: A theoretical and numerical investigation of non-ponderomotive absorption at laser intensities relevant to quantum electrodynamics is presented. It is predicted that there is a regime change in the dependence of fast electron energy on incident laser energy that coincides with the onset of pair production via the Breit-Wheeler process. This prediction is numerically verified via an extensive campaign of QED-inclusive particle-in-cell simulations. The dramatic nature of the power law shift leads to the conclusion that this process is a candidate for an unambiguous signature that future experiments on multi-petawatt laser facilities have truly entered the QED regime.

Abstract: The CUORE experiment, a ton-scale cryogenic bolometer array, recently began operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The array represents a significant advancement in this technology, and in this work we apply it for the first time to a high-sensitivity search for a lepton-number-violating process: ^{130}Te neutrinoless double-beta decay. Examining a total TeO_{2} exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of (7.7±0.5) keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of (0.014±0.002) counts/(keV kg yr), we find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Including systematic uncertainties, we place a lower limit on the decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.3×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.); the median statistical sensitivity of this search is 7.0×10^{24} yr. Combining this result with those of two earlier experiments, Cuoricino and CUORE-0, we find T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.5×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date on this decay. Interpreting this result as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, we find m_{ββ}

Abstract: CUORE, the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events, is an experiment searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te. The first CUORE dataset was acquired in May and June 2017 and consisted of 10.6 kg-yr of TeO2 exposure, with several days of calibration data before and after the physics dataset. We discuss here the initial performance of the CUORE detector and cryostat in this first dataset.

Abstract: International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The construction of the experiment and the installation of all towers in the cryostat was completed in August 2016: the experiment is now in data taking phase. In this talk, beyond updating the physics results from CUORE-0, we will discuss the achievements and technical challenges of the CUORE construction phase, with particular emphasis on the background reduction strategy, the performance of the detector during pre-operation and the projected first results from the full detector run.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate whether combined oral oxycodone hydrochloride-controlled release tablets plus paracetamol and tramadol hydrochloride tablets are more effective than epidural analgesia for postoperative pain control and side effects after cesarean section. We randomly enrolled 60 patients scheduled for cesarean section into either: patient-controlled epidural analgesia with 0.1% ropivacaine+0.1 μg/mL sufentanil (for postoperative 48 h)+injected pethidine on demand (E group); or controlled-release oxycodone (2x15 mg for the first postoperative 24 h; 2x10 mg for the second postoperative 24 h)+paracetamol and tramadol hydrochloride tablets (8x1 tablet for the postoperative 48 h) orally+injected pethidine on demand (O group). The E group experienced more evoked pain and uterine cramping pain at all times postoperatively. The patients who received oral analgesia had less resting pain at 6, 12, 24, and 36 h after surgery. Two patients in the E group injected pethidine (150 mg total) during the oxytocin infusion, whereas none of the O group patients injected pethidine. Pruritus was more common in the E group (P

Abstract: The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay in {Mathematical expression}Te. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles as well as provide information about the absolute neutrino mass scale and mass hierarchy.The CUORE setup will consist of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (containing 206 kg of {Mathematical expression}Te in total), operated as bolometers at a temperature of {Mathematical expression}10 mK. The experiment is now under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, a tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and is taking data. Here a detailed description of the CUORE-0 tower and its performance is reported. Abstract: International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decays. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed.

16. Ambipolar Conduction Behavior on High Performance Schottky Barrier Source/Drain Gate-All-Around Si Nanowire Nonvolatile SONOS Memory

Abstract: A Novel structure and high performance of the Schottky barrier source/drain gate-all-around (GAA) poly-Si nanowire (SiNW) nonvolatile silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) memory cell is reported with transistor characteristics, efficient programming/erasing, and reliability. The non-uniform thermal stress distribution on SiNW channel due to thermal insulation from the substrate by the buried oxide layer could affect carrier transport behavior. Under a high lateral electric field, the impact ionization is found since a large lateral field enhances carrier velocity. As gate voltage increases, the difference of the drain current between higher and room temperatures can be reduced because a high gate field lowers the Schottky barrier height of source/drain to ensure a strong hot-carriers generation. In particular, the ambipolar conduction of the Schottky barrier source/drain devices promotes the amount of hot-electron injecting programming by positive gate voltage, whereas the Schottky barrier enhances the generation of hot-holes at negative gate voltage to carry out erasure. The proposed Schottky barrier SONOS memory device provides low-voltage and high efficiency programming/erasing without apparent degradation of data retention and 10-K cycling endurance.

Abstract: The interface bond between steel fibers and concrete matrix is a key factor influencing bearing capacity of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC). In order to improve the interface bond strength and corrosion resistance, a kind of method was put forward by depositing zinc phosphate (ZnPh) coating on steel fiber surface in this paper. The corrosion behavior was investigated in 5% NaCl solution by using linear polarization measurement. Microstructure analysis (SEM and EDX) and fiber pull-out test in combination with linear polarization measurement were carried out. The results prove that ZnPh coatings fabricated on the carbon steel surface can not only protect steel fiber against corrosion, but also enhance the mechanical interlocking bonds between fibers and matrix.

Abstract: The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) is a third-generation synchrotron radiation light source and will come into commission in April 2009. The project Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source (SLEGS), which is a high intensity γ-ray beamline based on Laser Compton Scattering (LCS) between relativistic electron bunches and a laser, has been proposed at the SSRF. According to our simulations, the SLEGS is expected to generate a polarized γ-ray beam of up to 22 MeV and 109–10 photons/s if using 3.5 GeV, 200–300 mA relativistic electrons and a 500 W CO2 polarized laser. Here we describe the status and the application prospects of SLEGS and its developed prototype.

Abstract: We investigated the transmutation of some fission product nuclides (129)l, (135)Cs, (126)Sn, (93)Zr, (107)Pd, (137)Cs and (90)Sr, induced by the Compton backscattering (CBS) photons generated from the future Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source (SLEGS) facility. The evaluated photo-transmutation rates for (129)I, (135)CS, (126)Sn, (93)Zr, (107)Pd, (137)CS and (90)Sr can achieve 2.5 x 10(6), 1.3 x 10(6), 4.8 x 10(6), 2.7 x 10(6), 9.4 x 10(6), 1.3 x 10(6) and 1.6 x 10(6) per second, respectively, improving 4-5 orders of magnitude compared with those via the bremsstrahlung photons by a 10(20) W/cm(2) laser. The maximum transmutation Coupling efficiencies of the CBS photons were estimated to be 1.36% for (129)I, 1.70% for (135)Cs, 2.02% for (126)Sn, 1.03% for (90)Zr, 1.52% for (107)Pd. 1.62% for (137)Cs and 1.72% for (90)Sr, which are 2-6 times as those via the bremsstrahlung method by the 10(20) W/cm(2) laser. Abstract: The design of an X-ray source based on Compton backscattering of CO2 laser and 100 MeV electron beam is introduced. This instrument can produce 8-18 keV X-ray and will be installed as a prototype for the Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source (SLEGS) at the end of 2007. Some detailed descriptions for the related instruments are presented. The related simulation results are provided and discussed. The backgrounds from the dipole magnet of the 100 MeV LINAC and bremsstrahlung of the 100 MeV electrons are also estimated. Due to the large power of the employed CO2 laser, the expected flux of X-ray will be able to achieve the order of 106 s(-1), and the corresponding signal-noise ratio is about 10(6). Abstract: Shanghai Laser Electron Gamma Source, a high intensity beam line of gamma-ray, has been proposed recently. The beam line is expected to generate gamma-rays up to the maximum energy of 22 MeV by Compton backscattering between a CO2 laser and electrons in the 3.5 GeV storage ring of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The flux of non-collimated,gamma-rays is estimated to be 10(9)-10(10) s(-1) when a CO2 laser of several hundred Wait power is employed. Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been in stable data taking from November 2007 till February 2013 at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Observatory (4300 m a.s.l.). The detector consists of a single layer of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) (6700 m2) operated in streamer mode. The signal pick-up is obtained by means of strips facing one side of the gas volume. The digital readout of the signals, while allows a high space–time resolution in the shower front reconstruction, limits the measurable energy to a few hundred TeV. In order to fully investigate the 1–10 PeV region, an analog readout has been implemented by instrumenting each RPC with two large size electrodes facing the other side of the gas volume. Since December 2009 the RPC charge readout has been in operation on the entire central carpet (∼5800 m2). In this configuration the detector is able to measure the particle density at the core position where it ranges from tens to many thousands of particles per m2. Thus ARGO-YBJ provides a highly detailed image of the charge component at the core of air showers. In this paper we describe the analog readout of RPCs in ARGO-YBJ and discuss both the performance of the system and the physical impact on the EAS measurements. Abstract: International audience; The CUORE-0 experiment, a 52 bolometer array searching for neutrinoless double beta decay from 130Te, has started taking data in spring 2013 underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). The excellent results obtained in terms of energy resolution and background level allowed this experiment to reach the sensitivity of Cuoricino in approximately half the runtime. Combining CUORE-0 data (9.8 kg·yr exposure of 130Te) with the 19.75 kg·yr exposure of the Cuoricino experiment, we obtain the most stringent limit to date on the half-life of this isotope (T1/2 > 4.0 × 1024 yr). In this article, we review the results from CUORE-0 and discuss the status and the physics potential of CUORE, a 19 times larger bolometer array that plans to begin operations by end of this year.

In order to eliminate the response difference of the charge readout from the RPCs, a calibration procedure is carried out with the iso-gradient method. This method also allows the extension of the absolute calibration with the muon telescope including scintillation detectors to all the RPCs in the array. The overall systematic uncertainty in measurements o10.7%. In general, the method gives results consistent with those from a totally different approach also used in the experiment. Abstract: CUORE-0 is an experiment built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. Com- posed of 52 TeO2 bolometers of 750g each, it is expected to reach a sensitivity to the 0νββ half-life of 130Te around 3 · 1024 y in one year of live time. We present the first data, corresponding to an exposure of 7.1kg y. An analysis of the background indicates that the CUORE sensitivity goal is within reach, validating our techniques to reduce the α radioactivity of the detector.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a ton-scale experiment made of TeO2 bolometers that will probe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Excellent energy resolution, low threshold and low background make CUORE sensitive to nuclear recoils, allowing a search for dark matter interactions. With a total mass of 741 kg of TeO2, CUORE can search for an annual modulation of the counting rate at low energies. We present data obtained with CUORE-like detectors and the prospects for a dark matter search in CUORE-0, a 40-kg prototype, and CUORE.

Abstract: We have developed a post filtering technique by the numerical analysis program in MATLAB to improve the high-resolution magnetic image of an HTS scanning SQUID microscope. The SQUID has a high-permeability flux guide protruded to a sample in air at room temperature. Software filtering has an advantage that an object to analyze can be freely selected in comparison with hardware filters. The magnetic image of such a high-resolution as we can discriminate the magnetic microstructure of a few micron-size magnetic particles was obtained by means of our post filtering processing. It took only 38 seconds in case of our PC with a 2GHz processor.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a 1-ton scale bolometric experiment devoted to the search of the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) in 130Te. The CUORE detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals operated at 10 mK. CUORE-0 is the CUORE demonstrator: it has been built to test the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment and represents the largest 130Te bolometric setup ever operated. CUORE-0 has been running at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy) from 2013 to 2015. The final CUORE-0 analysis on 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} and the corresponding detector performance are presented. The present status of the CUORE experiment, now in its final construction and commissioning phase, are discussed. Abstract: The energy spectrum of cosmic Hydrogen and Helium nuclei has been measured, below the so-called "knee", by using a hybrid experiment with a wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope and the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) array of the ARGO-YBJ experiment at 4300 m above sea level. The Hydrogen and Helium nuclei have been well separated from other cosmic ray components by using a multi-parameter technique. A highly uniform energy resolution of about 25% is achieved throughout the whole energy range (100 TeV - 700 TeV). Abstract: We collected 19.4 days of data from four 750 g TeO2 bolometers, and in three of them we were able to set the energy threshold around 3 keV using a new analysis technique. We found a background rate ranging from 25 cpd/keV/kg at 3 keV to 2 cpd/keV/kg at 25 keV, and a peak at 4.7 keV. The origin of this peak is presently unknown, but its presence is confirmed by a reanalysis of 62.7 kg.days of data from the finished CUORICINO experiment. Finally, we report the expected sensitivities of the CUORE0 (52 bolometers) and CUORE (988 bolometers) experiments to a WIMP annual modulation signal., 9 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: We report on the extensive multi-wavelength observations of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) covering radio to gamma-rays, during the 4.5 year period of ARGO-YBJ and Fermi common operation time, from August 2008 to February 2013. In particular, thanks to the ARGO-YBJ and Fermi data, the whole energy range from 100 MeV to 10 TeV is covered without any gap. In the observation period, Mrk 421 showed both low and high activity states at all wavebands. The correlations among flux variations in different wavebands were analyzed. Seven large flares, including five X-ray flares and two GeV gamma-ray flares with variable durations (3-58 days), and one X-ray outburst phase were identified and used to investigate the variation of the spectral energy distribution with respect to a relative quiescent phase. During the outburst phase and the seven flaring episodes, the peak energy in X-rays is observed to increase from sub-keV to few keV. The TeV gamma-ray flux increases up to 0.9-7.2 times the flux of the Crab Nebula. The behavior of GeV gamma-rays is found to vary depending on the flare, a feature that leads us to classify flares into three groups according to the GeV flux variation. Finally, the one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model was adopted to describe the emission spectra. Two out of three groups can be satisfactorily described using injected electrons with a power-law spectral index around 2.2, as expected from relativistic diffuse shock acceleration, whereas the remaining group requires a harder injected spectrum. Abstract: ""The charge readout of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) is implemented in the ARGO-YBJ experiment to measure the charged particle density of the shower front up to 10^4\\\/m^2, enabling the study of the primary cosmic rays with energies in the ''knee'' region. As the first time for RPCs being used this way, a telescope with RPCs and scintillation detectors is setup to calibrate the number of charged particles hitting a RPC versus its charge readout. Air shower particles are taken as the calibration beam. The telescope was tested at sea level and then moved to the ARGO-YBJ site for coincident operation with the ARGO-YBJ experiment. The charge readout shows good linearity with the particle density in the dynamic range (up to 200\\\/m^2).""

Abstract: Resonant properties in 18Ne relevant to the stellar reaction of 14O(α,p)17F have been investigated through a resonant elastic scattering of 17F+p. The 17F RI beam was produced via a projectile-fragmentation reaction, and subsequently separated and purified by a Radioactive Ion beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL). After a series of energy degradation, a 4.21 AMeV 17F beam bombarded a thick (CH2)n target at T2 terminal. Energy and angle of the recoiled protons were measured by two sets of ΔE-E silicon telescope at θlab ≈ 0°, 14° respectively. Several resonances in 18Ne were observed, and their resonant parameters including energy, spin-parity and decay width have been determined by an R-Matrix analysis of the experimental excitation function.

Abstract: We have measured two‐proton momentum and angular correlations for the 23Al excited states from the 23Al radioactive beam on a 12C target at an energy of 60∼70 A MeV at the projectile fragment separator beamline (RIPS) in the RIKEN Ring Cyclotron Facility. The decay products, namely 21Na+p+p from 23Al are clean identified. The relative momentum and opening angle between two protons in the rest frame of three body decay channels demonstrate that there are some diproton emission components from 2He cluster for the excited 23Al.

Abstract: The wavefront aberrations in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) laser system consists of static aberration such as material inhomogeneous, optical figure error and assemble error and so on, and dynamics aberration such as pumping induced thermal distortion, nonlinear effect induced index fluctuation and so on. Two Years ago, an adaptive optical system with 45 correction elements was established for the wavefront control of ICF laser system. And the static aberration correction had been realized. Recently this adaptive optical system has been used to correct the lamp pumping induced thermal distortion. For the nanosecond scale pulse laser output, the directly close-loop operation of adaptive optical system is impossible. So the pre-correction method of the wavefront control has been adopted. The dynamic thermal distortion pre-correction has been realized. The system also successfully corrected the compound aberration both of static and thermal aberration. This work would be helpful for shortening the operation period of the ICF laser system.

Abstract: Summary The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein surface subunit gp120 is an attractive target for molecular intervention. This is because anti-HIV-1 gp120 neutralizing antibodies display the potential ability to inhibit HIV-1 infection. The present investigation describes the construction of a genetically engineered single chain antibody (scFv102) against HIV-1 gp120, its expression and functional evaluation. The parental hybridoma cell line (102) produces an immunoglobulin directed against the conserved CD4-binding region of gp120. cDNAs encoding the variable regions of the heavy (VH) and light (VL) chains were prepared by reverse transcription PCR and linked together with an oligonucleotide encoding a linker peptide (Gly4Ser)3 to produce a single chain antibody gene. The resulting DNA construct was cloned into a prokaryotic expression vector (pET28) and recombinant scFv102 was expressed in Eserichia coli as an insoluble protein. The denatured scFv102 was refolded and purified by immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography. Purified scFv102 had the same specificity as the intact IgG in immuno-blotting assays and immuno-fluorescence (IF) detection, but ELISA analyses demonstrated the affinity of scFv102 to be 5-fold lower than that of the parental monoclonal antibody. In neutralization assays, scFv102 at concentrations lower than 40 µg/ml exhibited efficient interference with viral replication and inhibition of viral infection (90%) across a range of primary isolates of subtype B HIV-1. These results suggest that the constructed anti-HIV-1 gp120 scFv102 has good biological activity and can potentially be used for in vitro diagnostic and in vivo therapeutic applications.

Abstract: A sliding mode control method for induction motor drives is presented. Based on the model of the induction motor in the frame rotating synchronously with the stator current vector, the method possess two distinct features: decoupling control of the two components of torque; and insensitivity to motor parameter variations. The control law is represented in inequalities instead of equalities. Therefore, when the motor parameters are changed, the stability of the sliding mode and the feature of independent control will not be destroyed as long as the corresponding inequalities hold valid. That is why the proposed method is very robust. Experimental results show that even when the motor parameters are changed to a large extent, the performance of the control system remains almost unchanged. >

Abstract: Summary form only given. Ultrahigh focused intensities (>10/sup 18/ W/cm/sup 2/) is very important for high field physics studies at the relativistic regime. Very small number optics must be used for focusing of kHz laser pulses. However, the focused intensity is limited by the aberration of the optics and the wavefront distortion of the laser system. The laser we used is a home-built 1 kHz Ti:sapphlre laser system. The oscillator of the laser generates broadband femtosecond pulses (120 nm FWHM).

Abstract: We report the first comprehensive study of large amplitude Langmuir waves in a plasma of nanometer-scale clusters. Using an oblique angle single-shot frequency domain holography diagnostic, the shape of these wakefields is captured for the first time. The wavefronts are observed to curve backwards, in contrast to the forwards curvature of wakefields in uniform plasma. Due to the expansion of the clusters, the first wakefield period is longer than those trailing it. The features of the data are well described by fully relativistic two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and by a quasianalytic solution for a one- dimensional, nonlinear wakefield in a cluster plasma. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract: Fine, homogeneous lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powders have been prepared by the thermal decompostion of metalorganic complexes derived from nitrate solutions using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a complexing agent. It has been shown that nitrate ions accelerate the decomposition of the precursor and the crystallization of the PZT phase initiates at temperatures as low as 250°C. No intermediate phases, other than PbO, were found. The coexistence region of the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases in the sintered ceramic was found to be a little over 1 at.%. The chloride-EDTA precursor did not form the desired PZT phase, even after calcination at 1000°C. The segregation and loss of lead was observed for this material, due to the formation and evaporation of PbCl2. DTA/TGA, SEM, and XRD were employed to characterize the powders. The use of TEM with nanoprobe energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), allowed the identification of the phase segregation in the chloride-EDTA derived powder. A possible reaction mechanism for this phase segregation is suggested.

Abstract: CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of130Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below 60keV. Abstract: CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{130}Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg y of total TeO_2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the {\alpha} background-dominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 \pm 0.011 and 0.019 \pm 0.002 counts/keV/kg/y, respectively. The latter result represents a factor of 6 improvement from a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. The results verify our understanding of the background sources in CUORE-0, which is the basis of extrapolations to the full CUORE detector. The obtained energy resolution (full width at half maximum) in the region of interest is 5.7 keV. Based on the measured background rate and energy resolution in the region of interest, CUORE-0 half-life sensitivity is expected to surpass the observed lower bound of Cuoricino with one year of live time., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, version 2 as published in Eur. Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. Abstract: We report the results of a search for axions from the 14.4 keV M1 transition from Fe-57 in the core of the sun using the axio-electric effect in TeO2 bolometers. The detectors are 5x5x5 cm3 crystals operated at about 10 mK in a facility used to test bolometers for the CUORE experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 43.65 kg d of data was made using a newly developed low energy trigger which was optimized to reduce the detectors energy threshold. An upper limit of 0.63 c kg-1 d-1 was established at 95% C.L.. From this value, a lower bound at 95% C.L. was placed on the Peccei-Quinn energy scale of fa >= 0.76 10**6 GeV for a value of S=0.55 for the flavor-singlet axial vector matrix element.
