We introduce a Magnetic Particle Imaging Susceptometer (MPIS) that uses a high- sensitivity atomic magnetometer (AM) for recording the spatial distribution of fluid- suspended magnetic nanoparticles. We have evaluated the MPIS performance by one-dimensional scans of structured nanoparticle phantoms, demonstrating, in particular, resolutions of ≈2.5 mm prior to deconvolution and ≪1 mm after deconvolution. Our instrument conceptually follows the general principle of Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) for encoding spatial distributions into magnetic flux density variations. Conversely to previously demonstrated MPI methods, MPIS works in time- space by recording time series of the sample’s magnetic response including all Fourier components. The device deploys a specifically designed system of coils, a low-frequency excitation scheme, and a simple source localization algorithm. The difference of the AM’s frequency response with respect to the conventional receive coil detection allows us to work at much lower driving frequencies. We demonstrate operation at frequencies on the order of 100 Hz, enabling the beneficial use of larger nanoparticles. The spatial distribution encoded into the particles’ susceptibility needs a much lower excitation field amplitude compared to conventional MPI scanners. These two features make MPIS least harmful for biological samples and subjects compared to conventional MPI scanners. We also address performance characteristics and other possible applications of MPIS.

Results are reported from the first full-scale search for transient signals from exotic fields of astrophysical origin using data from a newly constructed Earth-scale detector: the Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME). Data collected by the GNOME consist of correlated measurements from optical atomic magnetometers located in laboratories all over the world. GNOME data are searched for patterns of signals propagating through the network consistent with exotic fields composed of ultralight bosons such as axion-like particles (ALPs). Analysis of data from a continuous month-long operation of the GNOME finds no statistically significant signals consistent with those expected due to encounters with topological defects (axion domain walls), placing new experimental constraints on such dark matter scenarios.

The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers to search for Exotic physics (GNOME) is a network of geographically separated, time-synchronized, optically pumped atomic magnetometers that is being used to search for correlated transient signals heralding exotic physics. The GNOME is sensitive to nuclear- and electron-spin couplings to exotic fields from astrophysical sources such as compact dark-matter objects (for example, axion stars and domain walls). We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey’s method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons. Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time-reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment were the use of a 199Hg comagnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic-field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups, while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. An array of 16 laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. We describe details of the Cs sensors' construction and modes of operation, emphasizing the accuracy and sensitivity of the magnetic-field readout. We present two applications of the magnetometer array directly beneficial to the nEDM experiment: (i) the implementation of a strategy to correct for the drift of the vertical magnetic-field gradient and (ii) a procedure to homogenize the magnetic field. The first reduces the uncertainty of the nEDM result. The second enables transverse neutron spin relaxation times exceeding 1500 s, improving the statistical sensitivity of the nEDM experiment by about 35% and effectively increasing the rate of nEDM data taking by a factor of 1.8. The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME) is a network of time-synchronized, geographically separated, optically pumped atomic magnetometers that is being used to search for correlated transient signals heralding exotic physics. GNOME is sensitive to exotic couplings of atomic spins to certain classes of dark matter candidates, such as axions. This work presents a data analysis procedure to search for axion dark matter in the form of topological defects: specifically, walls separating domains of discrete degenerate vacua in the axion field. An axion domain wall crossing the Earth creates a distinctive signal pattern in the network that can be distinguished from random noise. The reliability of the analysis procedure and the sensitivity of the GNOME to domain-wall crossings are studied using simulated data.

We report on the strategy used to optimize the sensitivity of our search for a neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Measurements were made upon ultracold neutrons stored within a single chamber at the heart of our apparatus. A mercury cohabiting magnetometer together with an array of cesium magnetometers were used to monitor the magnetic field, which was controlled and shaped by a series of precision field coils. In addition to details of the setup itself, we describe the chosen path to realize an appropriate balance between achieving the highest statistical sensitivity alongside the necessary control on systematic effects. The resulting irreducible sensitivity is better than 1 × 10−26e cm. International audience; We report on a laser based $^{199}$Hg co-magnetometer deployed in an experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron. We demonstrate a more than five times increased signal to-noise-ratio in a direct comparison measurement with its $^{204}$Hg discharge bulb-based predecessor. An improved data model for the extraction of important system parameters such as the degrees of absorption and polarization is derived. Laser- and lamp-based data-sets can be consistently described by the improved model which permits to compare measurements using the two different light sources and to explain the increase in magnetometer performance. The laser-based magnetometer satisfies the magnetic field sensitivity requirements for the next generation nEDM experiments.

The discrimination of immobilised superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) against SPIONs in fluid environments via their magnetic relaxation behaviour is a powerful tool for bio-medical imaging. Here we demonstrate that a gradiometer of laser-pumped atomic magnetometers can be used to record accurate time series of the relaxing magnetic field produced by pre-polarised SPIONs. We have investigated dry in vitro maghemite nanoparticle samples with different size distributions (average radii ranging from 14 to 21 nm) and analysed their relaxation using the Néel–Brown formalism. Fitting our model function to the magnetorelaxation (MRX) data allows us to extract the anisotropy constant K and the saturation magnetisation MS of each sample. While the latter was found not to depend on the particle size, we observe that K is inversely proportional to the (time- and size-) averaged volume of the magnetised particle fraction. We have identified the range of SPION sizes that are best suited for MRX detection considering our specific experimental conditions and sample preparation technique.

We describe a method for recording the Rabi nutation of nuclear spin polarized 3He by optically pumped cesium magnetometers. The measurement is performed by detecting the time-dependent magnetic field produced by the 3He magnetization. The observed signals are compared to theoretical models and the results are used to precisely trace the evolution of the magnetization. This procedure represents a convenient way to control and measure the Rabi flip angle and the degree of spin polarization in experiments using 3He magnetometers. The method requires only very coarse knowledge of the applied magnetic field’s magnitude.

We present first results on the imaging of the two dimensional magnetic field distributions using a recently developed magnetic field imaging camera (MFIC). The instrument is based on laser-pumped atomic magnetometry with an alkali vapour in a buffer gas. The device provides millimetre spatial and sub-second time resolution, and allows mapping the magnetic field from circa 2 cm2 surfaces. We apply the MFIC to image magnetic field patterns of deposited superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) and quantify the achieved sensitivity. We address the applicability of the instrument to in-vitro and in-vivo imaging of SPIONs distributions in biological tissue and small animals.

The chapter gives a comprehensive account of the theory of atomic magnetometers deploying optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) in spin-polarized atomic ensembles, and of the practical realization of such magnetometers. We address single laser beam experiments throughout, but give explicit hints on how the results can be extended to pump-probe configurations. After a general introduction and the presentation of a classification of atomic magnetometer principles, we address the three major processes, viz., polarization creation, atom-field interaction, and optical detection that occur in the subclass of magnetic resonance-based magnetometers. The time-independent signals on which so-called Hanle magnetometers built are also reviewed for both spin-oriented and spin-aligned media. In the extended central part we derive an algebraic master expression (valid for all ODMR magnetometers) that expresses the signal, i.e., the detected time-dependent light power in terms of all system parameters. We then give explicit algebraic results for the absolute signals observed in the so-called Mz- and Mx-configurations for various geometries with arbitrary relative orientations of the static field, the oscillating field and the light propagation direction. Although the chapter’s main focus is on magnetic resonance processes driven by oscillating magnetic fields (we treat both spin-oriented and spin-aligned media), we also address magnetometers in which the magnetic resonance is driven by amplitude-, frequency-, or polarization-modulated light. The final section of the chapter gives a detailed account of the physical realization of an Mx-magnetometer array and the electronics used for its operation. We demonstrate that the observed resonance signals have the predicted spectral shapes and illustrate procedures for optimizing the magnetometric sensitivity.

20 Optically pumped atomic magnetometers measure the Larmor frequency νL at which the bulk magnetization of a spin-polarized alkali metal vapour in a glass cell precesses around the field of interest B → 0. The precession frequency is related to the modulus of the magnetic field by νL=(γ/2π)|B → 0|, where γ/2π≈3.5Hz/nT for 133Cs, so that the magnetic field measurement consists in a frequency measurement. In so-called ODMR magnetometers, νL is determined by Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance using laser radiation. The general principle of an ODMR magnetometer can be understood as follows: A bulk spin polarization is created in the atomic medium through optical pumping, a process introduced in the 1950s, by which angular momentum of polarized light, resonant with an atomic m partial view of sensor array in the 19-channel Fribourg magnetocardiography (MCG) device and (inset) subject positioned for MCG measurements (details in the text). International audience; The measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) constrains the contribution of CP-violating terms within both the Standard Model and its extensions. The experiment uses ultracold neutrons (UCN) stored in vacuum at room temperature. This technique provided the last (and best) limit by the RAL/Sussex/ILL collaboration in 2006: dn < 2:9 × 10-26 e cm (90% C.L.). We aim to improve the experimental sensitivity by a factor of 5 within 2-3 years, using an upgrade of the same apparatus. We will take advantage of the increased ultracold neutron density at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and of a new concept including both, external magnetometers and a cohabiting magnetometer. In parallel, a next generation apparatus with two UCN storage chambers and an elaborate magnetic field control is being designed aiming to achieve another order of magnitude increase in sensitivity, allowing us to put a limit as tight as dn < 5 × 10-28 e cm (95% C.L.), if not establishing a finite value.

High precision mapping of weak magnetic fields is of interest for several branches of pure and applied research. This paper presents a resume of the progress made at Fribourg in adapting laboratory style laser-pumped optical Cs magnetometers to multisensor field mapping problems. Progress has been made in sensor head design and manufacture, laser beam splitting and control, and signal treatment electronics. A summary of the technology and its applications are presented.

International audience; The effort towards a new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) at the Paul Scherrer Institut's (PSI) new high intensity source of ultracold neutrons (UCN) is described. The experimental technique relies on Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields, using UCN in vacuum with the apparatus at ambient temperature. In the first phase, R&D towards the upgrade of the RAL/Sussex/ILL apparatus is being performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). In the second phase the apparatus, moved from ILL to PSI, will allow an improvement in experimental sensitivity by a factor of 5. In the third phase, a new spectrometer should gain another order of magnitude in sensitivity. The improvements will be mainly due to (1) much higher UCN intensity, (2) improved magnetometry and magnetic field control, and (3) a double chamber configuration with opposite electric field directions.

The optical absorption and fluorescence spectra of alkali atoms isolated in liquid and solid He matrices depend on specific macroscopic matrix properties, such as their molar volume and (anisotropic) elasticity constants, and provide thus information about the quantum matrix. We apply optical spectroscopy to investigate the properties of a recently discovered impurity-stabilized doped He4 solid that exists in equilibrium with pressurized superfluid helium close to the solidification∕melting point of pure helium. The difference between the local He density around the implanted atoms obtained in the present experiment and the average density measured earlier suggests that the impurity-stabilized solid He is in fact a porous structure filled with liquid helium.

We have experimentally studied the selective reflection spectra of a circularly-polarized laser beam from a sub-micrometric Rb vapor cell with a thickness L around λ/2 (λ = 780 nm being the laser wavelength tuned to the D2line) in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field. Based on the results of these studies, we propose a new method for the tunable locking of the diode laser frequency, which does not require frequency modulation nor complex electronics. The experimental realization of the technique has demonstrated its effectiveness and its competitiveness with the known DAVVL-type methods.

We report on extensive studies on the intrinsic sensitivity of a combined 3 He/Cs magnetometer. The magnetometer relies on the detection of the free spin precession of nuclear spin polarized 3 He by optically pumped cesium magnetometers. We characterize the relevant processes involved in the detection and quantify their impact on the total sensitivity of the magnetometer. An expression is derived that predicts the sensitivity of this magnetometer scheme and the results are compared to experiments. Excellent agreement is found between theory and experiments, and implications for an application of a 3 He/Cs magnetometer in an experiment searching for a permanent neutron electric dipole moment are discussed.

Existing Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) instruments detect the oscillating magnetic field produced by harmonically-excited magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with receive coils that pick up magnetic flux changes [1]. The direct measurement of MNP-produced magnetic flux was recently demonstrated [2] using fluxgate magnetometers as magnetic field sensors. Here we present an alternative approach to AC magnetic field sensing based on a laser-pumped atomic magnetometer operated as an rf field detector (atomic rf magnetometer, ARFM). We have developed an ARFM prototype and deploy it as field sensor in an AC magnetic susceptometer. Here we report on its current performance.

We discuss the design and performance of a laser-pumped cesium vapor magnetometer in the Mx configuration. The device will be employed in the control and stabilization of fluctuating magnetic fields and gradients in a new experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron. We have determined the intrinsic sensitivity of the device to be 15 fT in a 1 Hz bandwidth, limited by technical laser noise. In the shot noise limit the magnetometer can reach a sensitivity of 10 fT in a 1 Hz bandwidth. We have used the device to study the fluctuations of a stable magnetic field in a multi-layer magnetic shield for integration times in the range of 2–100 seconds. The residual fluctuations for times up to a few minutes are traced back to the instability of the power supply used to generate the field.

We have performed a comparison of laser (LsOPM) and lamp (LpOPM) pumped cesium vapor magnetometers. Although the LsOPM operated 50% above its shot-noise limit we found an intrinsic sensitivity of 15 fT/\sqrt{Hz} and 25 fT/\sqrt{Hz} for the LsOPM and LpOPM respectively. Two modes of operation, viz.,the phase-stabilized and the self-oscillating mode were investigated and found to yield a similar performance. We have compared the performance of the LsOPM and the LpOPM directly by simultaneous measurements of field fluctuations of a 2 microtesla magnetic field inside a multilayer magnetic shield and have used one of the magnetometers for an active field stabilization. In the stabilized mode we found a gradient instability of 25 fT within an integration time of 100 s, which represents an upper limit of the long-term stability of the magnetometers., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

Magnetic fields produced by biological organisms contain valuable information on the underlying physiological processes and their pathologies. Currently, superconducting detectors cooled far below room temperature are required to measure these generally weak biomagnetic signals. We have developed a sensitive laser magnetometer based on optical pumping of cesium atoms that makes it possible to map the magnetic field produced by the beating human heart. A gradiometer formed by two identical sensors greatly reduces the influence of external stray magnetic fields. The magnetometer operates at room temperature and therefore opens the way to affordable and convenient monitoring of biomagnetic fields in research and medical diagnostics.

We report on the design and performance of a highly sensitive combined $^3$He/Cs magnetometer for the absolute measurement of magnetic fields. The magnetometer relies on the magnetometric detection of the free spin precession of nuclear spin polarized $^3$He gas by optically pumped cesium magnetometers. We plan to deploy this type of combined magnetometer in an experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of ultracold neutrons at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland). A prototype magnetometer was built at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and tested at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (Berlin, Germany). We present a magnetometer based on optically pumped Cs atoms that measures the magnitude and direction of a 1 μT magnetic field. Multiple circularly polarized laser beams were used to probe the free spin precession of the Cs atoms. The design was optimized for long-time stability and achieves a scalar resolution better than 300 fT for integration times ranging from 80 ms to 1000 s. The best scalar resolution of less than 80 fT was reached with integration times of 1.6 to 6 s. In this article, we review the history, current status, physical mechanisms, experimental methods, and applications of nonlinear magneto-optical effects in atomic vapors. We begin by describing the pioneering work of Macaluso and Corbino over a century ago on linear magneto-optical effects (in which the properties of the medium do not depend on the light power) in the vicinity of atomic resonances, and contrast these effects with various nonlinear magneto-optical phenomena that have been studied both theoretically and experimentally since the late 1960s. In recent years, the field of nonlinear magneto-optics has experienced a revival of interest that has led to a number of developments, including the observation of ultra-narrow (1-Hz) magneto-optical resonances, applications in sensitive magnetometry, nonlinear magneto-optical tomography, and the possibility of a search for parity- and time-reversal-invariance violation in atoms., 51 pages, 23 figures, to appear in Rev. In a weak magnetic field coherent dark resonances in cesium vapor are split into up to 15 resolved components, depending on field direction and laser polarizations. We find that the selection rules are different for vapor cells with and without buffer gas due to a change in multipolarity of the two-photon coupling. At low laser intensities or sufficiently high buffer-gas pressure optical pumping between different dark resonances can be neglected so that a simple model allows one to calculate the relative line strengths, giving complete agreement with the experimental spectra. @S1050-2947~98!00907-X#

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of magnetic resonance transitions induced by polarization-modulated light in cesium vapor exposed to a transverse magnetic field. Signals are obtained by phase-sensitive analysis of the light power traversing the vapor cell at six harmonics of the polarization modulation frequency. Resonances appear whenever the Larmor frequency matches an integer multiple of the modulation frequency. We have further investigated the modifications of the spectra when varying the modulation duty cycle. The resonance amplitudes of both in-phase and quadrature components are well described in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the modulation function. The background-free signals generated by the polarization modulation scheme have a high application potential in atomic magnetometry., 5 pages, 3 figures

We report the results of electron-spin-resonance studies of Cs atoms trapped in the body-centered-cubic phase of a solid {sup 4}He matrix. Free-induction-decay times longer than 100 ms have been measured in spin-transient experiments. In optical-rf double-resonance experiments we have obtained linewidths of less than 20 Hz (full width at half maximum). The magnetometric sensitivity of our sample is 26 nG/{radical}Hz. We have also demonstrated that magnetic resonance in such samples can be detected with high sensitivity using forward-scattered optical radiation. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

We review our ongoing work on deploying optical (atomic) magnetometry for measuring the magnetic response of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) samples, yielding MNP size distributions, and other sample parameters like Neel relaxation time τ, saturation magnetisation Ms , anisotropy constant K and magnetic susceptibility χ. We address magnetorelaxation (MRX) signals, in which the decaying magnetisation M(t) following a magnetising pulse is recorded by a single atomic magnetometer or by a novel magnetic source imaging camera (MSIC) allowing spatially resolved MRX studies of distributed MNP samples. We further show that optical magnetometers can be used for a direct measurement of the M(H) and dM/dH(H) dependencies of MNP samples, the latter forming the basis for an optical magnetometer implementation of the MPI (Magnetic Particle Imaging) method. All experiments are in view of developing biomedical imaging modalities.

In recent years diode laser sources have become widespread and reliable tools in magneto-optical spectroscopy. In particular, laser-driven atomic magnetometers have found a wide range of practical applications. More recently, so-called magnetically silent variants of atomic magnetometers have been developed. While in conventional magnetometers the magnetic resonance transitions between atomic sublevels are phase-coherently driven by a weak oscillating magnetic field, silent magnetometers use schemes in which either the frequency (FM) or the amplitude (AM) of the light beam is modulated. Here we present a theoretical model that yields algebraic expressions for the parameters of the multiple resonances that occur when either amplitude-, frequency- or polarization-modulated light of circular polarization is used to drive the magnetic resonance transition in a transverse magnetic field. The relative magnitudes of the resonances that are observed in the transmitted light intensity at harmonic m of the Larmor frequency \omega_L (either by DC or phase sensitive detection at harmonics q of the modulation frequency \omega_mod) of the transmitted light are expressed in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the modulation function. Our approach is based on an atomic multipole moment representation that is valid for spin-oriented atomic states with arbitrary angular momentum F in the low light power limit. The first implantation of neutral Ba and Cs atoms into solid4He is reported. We discuss details of the experimental setup and techniques used to load the helium with atoms at concentrations of 108 cm−3. If photodissociation of Cs molecules and clusters is performed twice per hour this atomic concentration can be kept without a second implantation for almost a day. From the optical spectra of Ba in solid helium we infer no significant difference in the trapping site with respect to that in liquid helium.

Laser ablation of metals in liquid helium results in the formation of metal filaments with diameters on the order of 2–10 nanometres and of spherical nanoparticles. In superfluid helium these nanowires aggregate into centimeter-sized networks. We study the morphology and the electric conductivity of these large aggregates, as well as extinction spectra and the crystalline structure of the individual nanofragments. We discuss the effect of superfluidity on the mechanisms of coalescence processes at the nanometer and centimeter scales.

We present an experimental study of the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of Cu atoms in bulk liquid and solid helium matrices as well as in the dense plasma created by the laser ablation of copper in liquid helium. We observe transitions of the valence electron and of inner-shell electrons. The former produce structureless line shapes, a large broadening, and a blueshift. The latter practically are not shifted with respect to the free atom and possess a substructure consisting of a zero-phonon line and phonon wings. We suggest a qualitative interpretation of the observed spectra based on the atomic bubble model that takes the lifting of the $|{M}_{J}|$ degeneracy due to the bubble deformation and matrix-phonon interactions into account.

We study experimentally and theoretically the influence of light polarization on the interference patterns behind a diffracting grating. Different states of polarization and configurations are considered. The experiments are analyzed in terms of electromagnetic energy (EME) flow lines, which can be eventually identified with the paths followed by photons. We present a laser pumped 19 channel second-order magnetometer system for measuring magnetic fields produced by the beating human heart. Each field sensor is a room-temperature paraffin-coated cesium vapor cell operated in a standard M x magnetometer configuration based on optically detected magnetic resonance with circularly polarized D1 pumping on the F = 4 →F′ = 3 component of the D1 transition. Dynamic magnetic field maps are derived from the simultaneous recording at 19 grid points. The system has been successfully used for recording (in less than 2 minutes) cardiac field maps of more than 30 healthy subjects. We also report a recording of the MCG of a patient with a nonspecific intraventricular conduction defect, which represents the first detection of a cardiac anomaly by an atomic magnetometer array.

We propose a new technique for measuring the frequency stability of cw laser radiation. The technique relies on using the laser to be tested as a coupling laser in a scheme of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT), either on a Λ or a ladder system. A second, frequency tunable laser (stabilization of this laser is not needed) is used both to act as the EIT probe laser, and to form an atomic frequency reference spectrum. The frequency stability is monitored via the frequency deviation of the EIT resonance with respect to an atomic reference frequency. We also present an improved dichroic atomic vapor laser lock (DAVLL) method for frequency stabilization based on a nanocell with a λ/2 thickness.

We present a multichannel cardiac magnetic field imaging system built in Fribourg from optical double-resonance Cs vapor magnetometers. It consists of 25 individual sensors designed to record magnetic field maps of the beating human heart by simultaneous measurements on a grid of 19 points over the chest. We present an experimental study of the spectra produced by optical/radio-frequency double resonance in which resonant linearly polarized laser light is used in the optical pumping and detection processes. We show that the experimental spectra obtained for cesium are in excellent agreement with a very general theoretical model developed in our group and we investigate the limitations of this model. We have manufactured more than 250 nominally identical paraffin-coated Cs vapor cells (28 mm inner diameter bulbs) for multi-channel atomic magnetometer applications. We describe our dedicated cell characterization apparatus. For each cell we have determined the intrinsic longitudinal, Γ 01, and transverse, Γ 02, relaxation rates. Our best cell shows Γ 01/2π≈0.5 Hz, and Γ 02/2π≈2 Hz. We find a strong correlation of both relaxation rates which we explain in terms of reservoir and spin exchange relaxation. For each cell we have determined the optimal combination of rf and laser powers which yield the highest sensitivity to magnetic field changes. Out of all produced cells, 90% are found to have magnetometric sensitivities in the range of 9 to 30 fT $\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ . Noise analysis shows that the magnetometers operated with such cells have a sensitivity close to the fundamental photon shot noise limit.

International audience; A new nanocell has been elaborated, where the thickness of the atomic vapor column varies smoothly in the range L = 350–5100 nm. The cell allows studying the behavior of the resonance absorption at the D1 line of cesium atoms by varying the thickness from L = λ / 2 to L = 5 λ with the step λ / 2 (λ being the resonant wavelength of the laser, 894 nm) and the laser intensity. It is shown that at low laser intensities a narrowing of the resonance absorption spectrum is observed for L = (2n + 1)λ/2 (with an integer n) up to L = (7/2)λ, whereas for L = nλ the spectrum broadens. The developed theoretical model well describes the experiment.

In the past years we were able to show that room temperature optical magnetometers based on magnetic resonance in atomic vapors can be used to measure magnetocardiographic (MCG) signals of healthy adults. The objective of our ongoing work is to demonstrate that multichannel arrangements of affordable and maintenance-free optical magnetometers can be operated in clinical settings. On the way to that goal we studied a new optical magnetometry scheme using linearly polarized light. We also investigated the possibility to operate such magnetometers in inexpensive magnetic shielding rooms based on aluminum.

We present an experimental study of the intrinsic magnetometric sensitivity of an optical or rf-frequency double-resonance magnetometer in which linearly polarized laser light is used in the optical pumping and detection processes. We show that a semiempirical model of the magnetometer can be used to describe the magnetic resonance spectra. Then, we present an efficient method to predict the optimum operating point of the magnetometer, i.e., the light power and rf Rabi frequency providing maximum magnetometric sensitivity. Finally, we apply the method to investigate the evolution of the optimum operating point with temperature. The method is very efficient to determine relaxation rates and thus allowed us to determine the three collisional disalignment cross sections for the components of the alignment tensor. Both first and second harmonic signals from the magnetometer are considered and compared.

We have measured the electric tensor polarizabilities of the hyperfine levels of Cs atoms embedded in a body-centered cubic $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ crystal. The polarizabilities are inferred from the shift of optically detected magnetic resonance lines in each hyperfine level induced by static electric fields up to $50\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kV}∕\mathrm{cm}$. We recorded the magnetic resonances both by scanning the rf frequency and in a configuration in which the system is operated as a phase-stabilized magnetometer. The results from both measurements agree well with model calculations taking the effect of the solid helium matrix and our recent extension of the theory of forbidden tensor polarizabilities into account. We have also performed the first measurement of the differential tensor Stark splittings of the $F=3$ and $F=4$ hyperfine levels of the ground state, thus confirming the recently revised sign of this shift which affects the blackbody correction of primary frequency standards.

A new lecture demonstration experiment for illustrating the wave-particle dualism of light is proposed. The equipment is based on the interference of two coherent light beams produced in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Light from a green laser pointer is used to perform two simultaneous experiments. The expanded laser beam traverses a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which allows one to create a superposition of two coherent beams and to adjust the period of their interference fringes in a simple way—a didactic tool to illustrate the wave nature of light. The main feature of the experiment is the use of the same equipment to demonstrate the particle nature of light. For this the entering beam is strongly attenuated and photons at the exit of the interferometer are detected by a photomultiplier (PM) with a narrow slit, connected to a speaker. We propose a realization in which both of these experiments can be demonstrated simultaneously. Special design criteria of the set-up are its low cost, its simplicity, its didactical power and its suitability for large lecture halls.

We established an experimental set-up that allows laser stabilization using the Doppler1 and sub-Doppler2,3 Dichroic Atomic Vapor Laser Locking (DAVLL) and the Saturated Absorption (SA) scheme. In this report we present comparative studies between Doppler and sub-Doppler DAVLL using heterodyne frequency stability measurements with an independently SA stabilized laser. Some major sources of frequency instability are discussed together with ways to improve the stability. Special focus is laid on the sub-Doppler DAVLL stabilization technique where a new approach for getting higher stability is introduced. We report the observation of emission spectra from ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{*}{\mathrm{He}}_{n}$ exciplexes in solid $^{4}\mathrm{He}$. Two different excitation channels were experimentally identified, viz., exciplex formation via laser excitation to the atomic $5{P}_{3∕2}$ and to the $5{P}_{1∕2}$ levels. While the former channel was observed before in liquid helium, on helium nanodroplets, and in helium gas by different groups, the latter creation mechanism occurs only in solid helium or in gaseous helium above $10\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The experimental results are compared to theoretical predictions based on the extension of a model, used earlier by us for the description of ${\mathrm{Cs}}^{*}{\mathrm{He}}_{n}$ exciplexes. We also report the observation of fluorescence from atomic rubidium in solid helium, and discuss striking differences between the spectroscopic features of $\mathrm{Rb}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{He}$ and $\mathrm{Cs}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{He}$ systems.

We present a theoretical study of the spectra produced by optical–radio-frequency double resonance devices, in which resonant linearly polarized light is used in the optical pumping and detection processes. We extend previous work by presenting algebraic results which are valid for atomic states with arbitrary angular momenta, arbitrary rf intensities, and arbitrary geometries. The only restriction made is the assumption of low light intensity. The results are discussed in view of their use in optical magnetometers.

For physical processes which express themselves as a frequency, for example magnetic field measurements using optically-pumped alkali-vapor magnetometers, the precise extraction of the frequency from the noisy signal is a classical problem. We describe herein a frequency measurement system based on an inexpensive commercially available computer sound card coupled with a software single-tone estimator which reaches Cram\'er--Rao limited performance, a feature which commercial frequency counters often lack. Laser-pumped cesium magnetometers allow highly sensitive small field magnetometry at room temperature. We report on applications of that technique in biomagnetic diagnostics and in a new experiment searching for a neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment. In the biomagnetic application the magnetiv field from the beating human heart is detected using a gradiometer which reaches an intrinsic sensitvity of 80 fT/Hz1/2 with a spatial resolution of 28 mm. The device can record time-resolved magnetic field maps above the human body surface and its performance is comparable to devices based on Hi-Tc-SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) technology. In the nEDM experiment laser-pumped cesium magnetometers will be used to measure and stabilize a DC magnetic field of 2μT and to generate the oscillating filed for the neutron Ramsey resonance. Those devices reach an intrinsic sensitivity of about 14 fT/Hz1/2 with a measurement bandwidth of 1kHz.
