We report a miniaturized, minimally invasive high-density neural recording interface that occupies only a 1.53 mm2 footprint for hybrid integration of a flexible probe and a 256-channel integrated circuit chip. To achieve such a compact form factor, we developed a custom flip-chip bonding technique using anisotropic conductive film and analog circuit-under-pad in a tiny pitch of 75 m. To enhance signal-to-noise ratios, we applied a reference-replica topology that can provide the matched input impedance for signal and reference paths in low-noise aimpliers (LNAs). The analog front-end (AFE) consists of LNAs, buffers, programmable gain amplifiers, 10b ADCs, a reference generator, a digital controller, and serial-peripheral interfaces (SPIs). The AFE consumes 51.92 W from 1.2 V and 1.8 V supplies in an area of 0.0161 mm2 per channel, implemented in a 180 nm CMOS process. The AFE shows > 60 dB mid-band CMRR, 6.32 Vrms input-referred noise from 0.5 Hz to 10 kHz, and 48 M input impedance at 1 kHz. The fabricated AFE chip was directly flip-chip bonded with a 256-channel flexible polyimide neural probe and assembled in a tiny head-stage PCB. Full functionalities of the fabricated 256-channel interface were validated in both in vitro and in vivo experiments, demonstrating the presented hybrid neural recording interface is suitable for various neuroscience studies in the quest of large scale, miniaturized recording systems.

A high-pass sigma-delta modulator (HPSDM) is proposed for electrocardiography (ECG) signal acquisition system. The HPSDM is implemented using operational amplifier (op-amp) sharing and programmable feedforward coefficients. The op-amp sharing is adopted to reduce the quantity of amplifiers because they dominate the power consumption of the HPSDM. In addition, given that the magnitude of the ECG is dependent on different persons, programmable feedforward coefficients are utilized to extend the dynamic range of the HPSDM to fit the actual application. The proposed HPSDM is fabricated in a 0.18-μm standard CMOS process. Measurement results reveal that the proposed HPSDM has a signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 54.5 dB and a power consumption of 2.25 μW under a 1.2 V supply voltage and achieves a figure of merit (FoM) of 12.96 pJ/conv. Moreover, the proposed HPSDM has an SNDR of 64.8 dB and a power consumption of 5.2 μW under a 1.8 V supply voltage and achieves a FoM of 9.15 pJ/conv due to the op-amp sharing technique. Under the 1.2 V and 1.8 V supply voltages, the dynamic range of the HPSDM is extended to approximately 12 dB due to the technique of programmable feedforward coefficients.

This paper presents the noise optimization of a novel switched-capacitor (SC) based neural interface architecture, and its circuit demonstration in a 0.13 $\mu\text{m}$ CMOS process. To reduce thermal noise folding ratio, and suppress $kT/C$ noise, several noise optimization techniques are developed in the proposed architecture. First, one parasitic capacitance suppression scheme is developed to block noise charge transfer from parasitic capacitors to amplifier output. Second, one recording path-splitting scheme is proposed in the input sampling stage to selectively record local field potentials (LFPs), extracellular spikes, or both for reducing input noise floor, and total power consumption. Third, an auto-zero noise cancellation scheme is developed to suppress $kT/C$ noise in the neural amplifier stage. A prototype neural interface chip was fabricated, and also verified in both bench-top, and In-Vivo experiments. Bench-top testings show the input-referred noise of the designed chip is 4.8 $\mu\text{V}$ from 1 $\text{Hz}$ to 300 $\text{Hz}$ , and 2.3 $\mu\text{V}$ from 300 $\text{Hz}$ to 8 $kHz$ respectively, and In-Vivo experiments show the peak-to-peak amplitude of the total noise floor including neural activity, electrode interface noise, and the designed chip is only around 20 $\mu\text{V}$ . In comparison with conventional architectures through both circuit measurement and animal experiments, it is well demonstrated that the proposed noise optimization techniques can effectively reduce circuit noise floor, thus extending the application range of switched-capacitor circuits.

This paper presents an 8-channel energy-efficient analog front-end (AFE) for neural recording, with improvements in power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) and dynamic range. The input stage in the low noise amplifier (LNA) adopts low voltage supply (0.35 V) and current-reusing to achieve ultralow power. To maintain a high PSRR performance while using such a low-voltage supply, a replica-biasing scheme is proposed to generate a stable bias current for the input stage of the LNA despite large supply interference. By exploiting the signal characteristics in the tetrode recording, an averaged local field potential (A-LFP) servo loop is introduced to extend the dynamic range without consuming too much extra power and chip area. The A-LFP signal is generated by integrating the four-channel PGA outputs from the same tetrode. Furthermore, the outputs of the programmable gain amplifier (PGA) are level shifted to bias the input nodes of the amplifier through large pseudo resistors, thus increase the maximum output range without distortion under the low-voltage supply. The proof-of-concept prototype is fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS process. Each recording channel including an LNA and a PGA occupies 0.04 mm $^2$ and consumes 340 nW from the 0.35 V and 0.7 V supply. Each A-LFP servo loop, which is shared by four recording channels, occupies 0.04 mm $^2$ and consumes 190 nW. The maximum gain of the AFE is 54 dB, and the input-referred noise is 6.7 $\mu$ V over the passband from 0.5 Hz to 6.5 kHz. Measurement also shows that the 0.35 V replica-biasing input stage can tolerate a large interferer up to 200 mVpp with a PSRR of 74 dB, which has been improved to 110 dB with a silicon respin that shields critical wires in the layout.

Purpose In the spirit of overcoming the signal-to-noise limitations of active matrix, flat-panel imagers (AMFPIs) which employ array circuits based on a-Si:H thin-film transistors (TFTs), an empirical investigation of the noise properties of prototype active pixel arrays based on polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) TFTs is reported. Like a-Si:H, poly-Si supports fabrication of large area, monolithic x-ray imaging arrays and offers good radiation damage resistance, while providing electron and hole mobility orders of magnitude higher. Compared to pixel circuits typically consisting of a single addressing switch in an AMFPI array, the pixel circuit of an active pixel array includes an amplifier that magnifies the imaging signal prior to readout by external acquisition electronics. Also, while readout erases signal stored in the pixels for AMFPI arrays, active pixel arrays allow multiple nondestructive readout, which can be used to reduce noise. The prototype arrays investigated in this paper were developed to explore the effect of variation in amplifier design on noise. Methods A pair of prototype arrays incorporating single-stage and two-stage poly-Si pixel amplifiers were examined. The arrays incorporate various amplifier designs in which dimensions of some of the three (or four) poly-Si TFTs per pixel circuit for the single-stage array, and some of the five poly-Si TFTs for the two-stage array, were varied. The arrays were operated using a recently developed electronic data acquisition system that allows variation of operational conditions such as voltages and timing of control signals. The arrays were operated in the absence of radiation in various correlated multiple sampling modes, with and without the injection of charge directly into the pixel circuits for measurements of in-pixel gain and pixel noise. Pixel noise, referred back to the input of the pixel amplifier, was compared to predictions generated by a sophisticated circuit simulation model. Results Across the various pixel circuit designs, the median in-pixel gain for the single-stage and two-stage arrays was measured to be ×9.3 and ×25, respectively. These gain levels were sufficient to reduce the contribution of external noise, defined as the electronic additive noise in the absence of noise contributions from circuitry in the pixel and referred back to the input of the pixel amplifier, to less than 340 e. As a result, median pixel noise results as low as ~695 e and 866 e, acquired using eight samples, were observed from the best-performing single-stage and two-stage designs, respectively. While the magnitude of pixel noise predicted by simulation was lower than the measured results, there was generally good agreement between simulation and measurement for the functional dependence of noise on operating voltages, timing, and sampling mode. Conclusions The single-stage and two-stage arrays examined in this study demonstrated pixel noise well below that typically demonstrated by AMFPIs. Through proper design, it should be possible to maintain the noise levels observed in this study irrespective of the size and pitch of an active pixel array. Further reduction in pixel noise may be possible through more optimized pixel circuit design, faster readout, or improvements in fabrication.

Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) have been extensively used to measure extracellular spike activity from cultured neurons using multiple electrodes embedded in a planar glass substrate. This system has been implemented to investigate drug effects by detecting pharmacological perturbation reflected in spontaneous network activity. By configuring multiple wells in an MEA, a high-throughput electrophysiological assay has become available, speeding up drug tests. Despite its merits in acquiring massive amounts of electrophysiological data, the high cost and the bulky size of commercial multi-well MEA systems and most importantly its lack of customizability prevent potential users from fully implementing the system in drug experiments. In this work, we have developed a microelectrode array based drug testing platform by incorporating a custom-made compact 256-channel multi-well MEA in a standard microscope slide and commercial application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip based recording system. We arranged 256 electrodes in 16 wells to maximize data collection from a single chip. The multi-well MEA in this work has a more compact design with reduced chip size compared to previously reported multi-well MEAs. Four synaptic modulators (NMDA, AMPA, bicuculline (BIC) and ATP) were applied to a multi-well MEA and neural spike activity was analyzed to study their neurophysiological effects on cultured neurons. Analyzing various neuropharmacological compounds has become much more accessible by utilizing commercially available digital amplifier chips and customizing a user-preferred analog-front-end interface design with additional benefits in reduced platform size and cost.

This paper presents a low-power high-input-impedance analog-front-end (AFE) design including an instrumentational-amplifier (IA) and a neural-signal-specific ADC (NSS-ADC) for continuous acquisition of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. In the proposed AFE, low-voltage low-power design techniques are used to reduce the power consumption of the whole system. Furthermore, by utilizing the proposed NSS-ADC, high-amplitude EEG spikes, which convey more important information, are converted with higher resolutions, while the background-noise (B-Noise) of the EEG signal is converted with the lowest resolution. Hence, when the NSS-ADC enters the inactive region, the resolution- and DAC- controlling-units (RCU and DCU) set the analog and digital components of the NSS-ADC into off mode, which leads to power reduction. Based on measurement results, the AFE consumes a power of 3.7 μW under the sampling rate of 20 KS/s. In the proposed AFE, to avoid signal attenuation, active-electrodes (AEs) are utilized to enhance the input impedance of the AFE up to 102 GΩ and 5.2 GΩ at 1 Hz and 20 Hz, respectively. In addition, by using circuit-design techniques the input-referred-noise is reduced as low as 1.5 μV[Formula: see text] over 0.5-1.2 kHz. Finally, by using a transconductance-driven-right-leg (TDRL) and a common-mode-feedback (CMFB) blocks, a common-mode-rejection-ratio (CMRR) of 108 dB is achieved.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) enables wearable vitals monitoring. Nevertheless, it is still limited by the few mA of the LEDs driving current. We present a PPG sensor integrating an array of dedicated pinned-photodiodes (PPD) with a full readout chain integrated in a 0.18 $\mu$ m CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) process. The sensor features a total input referred noise of 0.68 e-rms per PPD, independently of the input light, and achieves a 4.6 $\mu$ W total power consumption, including the 2 $\mu$ W LED power, at 1.38 bpm heart rate average error.

CMOS microelectronics design has evolved tremendously during the last two decades. The evolution of CMOS devices to short channel designs where the feature size is below 1000 nm brings a great deal of uncertainty in the way the microelectronics design cycle is completed. After the conceptual idea, developing a thinking model to understand the operation of the device requires a good “ballpark” evaluation of transistor sizes, decision making, and assumptions to fulfill the specifications. This design process has iterations to meet specifications that exceed in number of the available degrees of freedom to maneuver the design. Once the thinking model is developed, the simulation validation follows to test if the design has a good possibility of delivering a successful prototype. If the simulation provides a good match between specifications and results, then the layout is developed. This paper shows a useful open science strategy, using the Excel software, to develop CMOS microelectronics hand calculations to verify a design, before performing the computer simulation and layout of CMOS analog integrated circuits. The full methodology is described to develop designs of passive components, as well as CMOS amplifiers. The methods are used in teaching CMOS microelectronics to students of electronic engineering with industrial partner participation. This paper describes an exhaustive example of a low-voltage operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) design which is used to design an instrumentation amplifier. Finally, a test is performed using this instrumentation amplifier to implement a front-end signal conditioning device for CMOS-MEMS biomedical applications.

Medical ultrasound has become a crucial part ofmodern society and continues to play a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Over the past decades, the development of medical ultrasound has seen extraordinary progress as a result of the tremendous research advances in microelectronics, transducer technology and signal processing algorithms. However, medical ultrasound still faces many challenges including power efficient driving of transducers, low-noise recording of ultrasoundechoes, effective beamforming in a non-linear, high-attenuation medium (human tissues) and reduced overall form factor. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the design of integrated circuits for medical ultrasound applications. The most important and ubiquitous modules in a medical ultrasound system are addressed, i) transducer driving circuit, ii) low-noise amplifier, iii) beamforming circuit and iv) analog-digital converter. Within each ultrasound module, some representative research highlights are described followed by a comparison of the state-of-the-art. Thispaper concludes with a discussion and recommendations for future research directions.

Air flow measurements provide significant information required for understanding the characteristics of insect movement. This study proposes a four-channel low-noise readout integrated circuit (IC) in order to measure air flow (air velocity), which can be beneficial to insect biomimetic robot systems that have been studied recently. Instrumentation amplifiers (IAs) with low-noise characteristics in readout ICs are essential because the air flow of an insect’s movement, which is electrically converted using a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor, generally produces a small signal. The fundamental architecture employed in the readout IC is a three op amp IA, and it accomplishes low-noise characteristics by chopping. Moreover, the readout IC has a four-channel input structure and implements an automatic offset calibration loop (AOCL) for input offset correction. The AOCL based on the binary search logic adjusts the output offset by controlling the input voltage bias generated by the R-2R digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The electrically converted air flow signal is amplified using a three op amp IA, which is passed through a low-pass filter (LPF) for ripple rejection that is generated by chopping, and converted to a digital code by a 12-bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Furthermore, the readout IC contains a low-dropout (LDO) regulator that enables the supply voltage to drive digital circuits, and a serial peripheral interface (SPI) for digital communication. The readout IC is designed with a 0.18 μm CMOS process and the current consumption is 1.886 mA at 3.3 V supply voltage. The IC has an active area of 6.78 mm2 and input-referred noise (IRN) characteristics of 95.4 nV/√Hz at 1 Hz.

This paper presents a remote 16 Ch × 200 GHz dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM)-passive optical fiber sensor (OFS) network. We particularly investigate the remote water-level monitoring capability of the OFS network based on an optical power measurement that features simplicity and a fast processing speed. The OFS network utilizes a seeded amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light that is spectrum-sliced and distributed by an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) towards multiple sensing units (SU), where each SU is installed at a different height in the water pool. Then, each SU reflects either of the two different optical powers according to the medium (air vs. water) back to the monitoring station. Therefore, the total received optical power at the monitoring station linearly changes according to the water level. We can simply recognize the water level by utilizing the optical power meter (OPM) at the monitoring station rather than the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), which is bulky and expensive and requires a relatively long processing time. Consequently, we can reduce the system complexity, processing time, and cost (both installation and maintenance). However, the OPM-based OFS network requires a new methodology to derive the water level from the measured optical power. Thus, we come up with the reference-to-power ratio (RPR) analysis, which can be used for the maximum distance analysis as well as water level recognition. Based on the new reception architecture supported by the new post-processing scheme, the OFS network can distinguish 17 different water levels of the SFP at the monitoring station, which is &gt, 40 km away from the SFP, without using any active devices (such as optical amplifiers) at the remote places.

Stethoscopes are used to transmit body sounds related to various physiological processes to ears of a physician, providing basic or supportive information for eventual diagnosis. Unfavorably, the dominant frequency components of most of the auscultation signals are localized close to the lower frequency limits of the human auditory system, restricting the achievable selectivity and specificity. The present study introduces an approach that aims at overcoming the existing limitations. A signal processing scheme utilizing knock rejection, dynamic compressor, and pseudo-stereo synthesizer blocks is described, along with hardware implementation and results of the initial subjective evaluation.

Modern neuromodulation systems typically provide a large number of recording and stimulation channels, which reduces the available power and area budget per channel. To maintain the necessary input-referred noise performance despite growingly rigorous area constraints, chopped neural front-ends are often the modality of choice, as chopperstabilization allows to simultaneously improve (1/f) noise and area consumption. The resulting issue of a drastically reduced input impedance has been addressed in prior art by impedance boosters based on voltage buffers at the input. These buffers precharge the large input capacitors, reduce the charge drawn from the electrodes and effectively boost the input impedance. Offset on these buffers directly translates into charge-transfer to the electrodes, which can accelerate electrode aging. To tackle this issue, a voltage buffer with ultra-low time-averaged offset is proposed, which cancels offset by periodic reconfiguration, thereby minimizing unintended charge transfer. This article explains the background and circuit design in detail and presents measurement results of a prototype implemented in a 180nm HV CMOS process. The measurements confirm that signal-independent, buffer offset induced charge transfer occurs and can be mitigated by the presented buffer reconfiguration without adversely affecting the operation of the input impedance booster. The presented neural recorder front-end achieves state of the art performance with an area consumption of 0.036mm2, an input referred noise of 1.32 ��Vrms (1 Hz to 200 Hz) and 3.36 ��Vrms (0.2 kHz to 10 kHz), power consumption of 13.7 ��W from 1.8V supply, as well as CMRR and PSRR ~83 dB at 50 Hz., acceptedVersion

Size and absolute concentration of suspensions of nanoparticles are important information for the study and development of new materials and products in different industrial applications spanning from biotechnology and pharmaceutics to food preparation and conservation. Laser Transmission Spectroscopy (LTS) is the only methodology able to measure nanoparticle size and concentration by performing a single measurement. In this paper we report on a new variable gain calibration procedure for LTS-based instruments allowing to decrease of an order of magnitude the experimental indetermination of the particle size respect to the conventional LTS based on the double ratio technique. The variable gain calibration procedure makes use of a specifically designed tunable-gain, dual-channel, dual-phase Lock-In Amplifier (LIA) whose input voltage signals are those ones generated by two Si photodiodes that measure the laser beam intensities passing through the sample containing the nanoparticles and a reference optical path. The LTS variable gain calibration procedure has been validated by firstly using a suspension of NIST standard polystyrene nanoparticles even 36 hours after the calibration procedure was accomplished. The paper reports in detail the LIA implementation describing the design methodologies and the electronic circuits. As a case example of the characterization of biological nanostructures, we demonstrate that a single LTS measurement allowed to determine size density distribution of a population of extracellular vesicles extracted from orange juice (25 nm in size) with the presence of their aggregates having a size of 340 nm and a concentration smaller than 3 orders of magnitude.

There is a growing interest to improve the quality of life of blind people. An implanted intracortical prosthesis could be the last resort in many cases of visual impairment. Technology at this moment is at a stage that implementation is at sight. Making the data communication to and from the implanted electrodes wireless is beneficial to avoid infection and to ease mobility. Here, we focus on the stimulation side, or downlink, for which we propose a low-power non-coherent digital demodulator on the implanted receiver. The experimentally demonstrated downlink is on a scaled-down version at a 1 MHz carrier frequency showing a data rate of 125 kbps. This provides proof of principle for the system with a 12 MHz carrier frequency and a data rate of 4 Mbps, which consumes under 1 mW at the receiver side in integrated circuit (IC) simulation. Due to its digital architecture, the system is easily adjustable to an ISM frequency band with its power consumption scaling linearly with the carrier frequency. The tested system uses off-the-shelf coils, which gave sufficient bandwidth, while staying within safe SAR limits. The digital receiver achieved a reduction in power consumption by skipping clock cycles of redundant bits. The system shows a promising pathway to a low-power wireless-enabled visual prosthesis.

The benefits of array coils in MRI and MRS are well known. A key component of essentially all array coils used today is the decoupling preamplifier. Unlike conventional 50 ohm low-noise preamps, decoupling preamps present a reactive impedance to the coil, which can be used to 'block' currents from being induced in the receive coil, reducing the impact of any electromagnetic coupling between array elements. While available from a number of vendors, a lower-cost solution would be advantageous. We investigate the use of conventional operational amplifiers as low-noise decoupling preamplifiers. In this paper the performance of the op-amp preamplifier is compared to conventional 50 Ω. The op-amp preamp design shows promise for use as a decoupling preamplifier with array coils.Clinical Relevance- This work could facilitate the development of array coils for spectroscopy and imaging.

Purpose: Preamplifier decoupling is useful for minimizing interaction between MRI array elements. The purpose of this work is to propose a general approach to designing networks for preamplifier decoupling while keeping the number of elements to a minimum. The approach is applicable to arbitrary impedance preamplifiers and arbitrary coil impedances. Methods: Closed form design equations for decoupling networks are derived based on maximum decoupling and minimum preamplifier noise conditions. The analytical solutions are verified using numerical simulations. Design examples at 32.1, 64, 128, and 298 MHz are shown. One of the examples is realized on a test bench. The fabricated circuit is tested for decoupling and minimum noise properties. Results: The design equations are verified numerically and experimentally. The fabricated network demonstrates 30.7 dB of decoupling and minimum output noise at the design frequency. Conclusion: The design equations lead to four alternative network solutions. Each network is realized as a T-shape or Π-shape three elements circuit topology. All four networks are identical in performance providing minimum amplifier noise and maximum decoupling for a given preamplifier and coil combination. An MRI array designer can choose any solution out of four. The considerations for choosing the most practical solution are given. The presented method enables the use of arbitrary impedance preamplifiers or transistors (not necessary 50 Ω) and provides the most compact design possible (with the least number of components), which is particularly useful in multi-element systems.

Arthropods, including pollinators and pests, have high positive and negative impacts on human well-being and the economy, and there is an increasing need to monitor their activity and population growth. The monitoring of arthropod species is a time-consuming and financially demanding process. Automatic detection can be a solution to this problem. Here, we describe the setup and operation mechanism of an infrared opto-electronic sensor-ring, which can be used for both small and large arthropods. The sensor-ring consists of 16 infrared (IR) photodiodes along a semicircle in front of an infrared LED. Using 3D printing, we constructed two types of sensor-ring: one with a wider sensing field for detection of large arthropods (flying, crawling, surface-living) in the size range of 2&ndash, 35 mm, and another one with a narrower sensing field for soil microarthropods in the size range of 0.1&ndash, 2 mm. We examined the detection accuracy and reliability of the two types of sensor-ring in the laboratory by using particles, and dead and living arthropods at two different sensitivity levels. For the wider sensor-ring, the 95% detectability level was reached with grain particles of 0.9 mm size. This result allowed us to detect all of the macroarthropods that were applied in the tests and that might be encountered in pest management. In the case of living microarthropods with different colors and shapes, when we used the narrower sensor-ring, we achieved the 95% detectability level at 1.1 mm, 0.9 mm, and 0.5 mm in the cases of F. candida, H. nitidus, and H. aculeifer, respectively. The unique potential of arthropod-detecting sensors lies in their real-time measurement system, the data are automatically forwarded to the server, and the end-user receives pest abundance data daily or even immediately. This technological innovation will allow us to make pest management more effective.

In order to effectively record from electrically active cells through microelectrode arrays a low-noise amplification and data acquisition system is required. Although commercially available, these systems can be expensive and lack the freedom to customise hardware and software. In this work we present a low-cost (US$21 for the first channel + US$11 for each additional channel), low-noise amplifier coupled with an analog to digital converter from National Instruments. The amplifier was designed to (i) operate between 0 and 5 V utilising a DC battery power supply, (ii) operate within a bandwidth of 10 kHz, (iii) remove DC voltage created at the electrode/electrolyte interface with a high-pass cut-off frequency of 0.7 Hz and (iv) have a gain of 2000. Strategies to reduce environment electromagnetic interference at the amplifier front end were employed and involved a customised neural interface board connected between the microelectrode array and amplifier. The constructed amplifier achieved an intrinsic noise amplitude of 0.8 μV rms , which facilitated high quality recordings as exemplified by in vitro recordings from primary hippocampal neurons.

The use of multiple surface EMG electrodes (High-Density surface EMG – HD-sEMG) allows the extraction of anatomical and physiological information either at the muscle or at the motor unit level with applications in several fields ranging from clinical neurophysiology to the control of prosthetic devices. These applications need to acquire monopolar sEMG signals free from power line interference arising from the capacitive coupling between the subject, the acquisition system and the power line. The aim of this work is to provide a common mode analysis of the detection system used to collect monopolar sEMG signals, characterizing different configuration of the reference electrodes leading to different behaviors in terms of immunity to the power line interference. Based on the experimental results, a new impedance-controlled HD-sEMG signal amplifier is proposed and discussed.

Ions are ubiquitous biological regulators playing a key role for vital processes in animals and plants. The combined detection of ion concentration and real-time monitoring of small variations with respect to the resting conditions is a multiscale functionality providing important information on health states. This multiscale functionality is still an open challenge for current ion sensing approaches. Here we show multiscale real-time and high-sensitivity ion detection with complementary organic electrochemical transistors amplifiers. The ion-sensing amplifier integrates in the same device both selective ion-to-electron transduction and local signal amplification demonstrating a sensitivity larger than 2300 mV V−1 dec−1, which overcomes the fundamental limit. It provides both ion detection over a range of five orders of magnitude and real-time monitoring of variations two orders of magnitude lower than the detected concentration, viz. multiscale ion detection. The approach is generally applicable to several transistor technologies and opens opportunities for multifunctional enhanced bioelectronics., Though organic electrochemical transistor (OECT)-based ion sensors are attractive for highly sensitive ion detection and monitoring, its limited sensitivity hinders its practical applicability. Here, the authors report real-time, high sensitivity ion detection with complementary OECT amplifiers.

PURPOSE Photon counting arrays (PCAs), capable of measuring the spectral information of individual x-ray photons and recording that information digitally, provide a number of advantages compared to conventional, energy-integrating active matrix flat-panel imagers - such as reducing the undesirable effects of electronic readout noise and Swank noise. While contemporary PCAs are based on crystalline silicon, our group has been examining the use of polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si, a semiconductor material better-suited for the manufacture of large-area devices) for such arrays. In this study, a theoretical investigation of the front-end amplifiers of array pixels incorporating photon counting circuits is described - building upon circuit simulation techniques developed in a previous study. Results for amplifier circuit designs corresponding to prototype PCAs currently under development, as well as for hypothetical circuit designs identified in the study, are reported. In the simulations, performance metrics (such as signal gain, linearity of signal response, and energy resolution) as well as various measures of count rate are determined. METHODS The simulations employed various input energy distributions (i.e., a 72 kVp spectrum as well as monoenergetic x rays) in order to determine circuit performance. To make the results representative of the properties of poly-Si, the simulations incorporated transistor characteristics that were empirically obtained from test devices. Optimal operating conditions for the circuits were determined by applying criteria to the performance metrics and identifying which conditions minimized settling time. Once the optimal operating conditions were identified, trains of input pulses simulating x-ray flux were used to determine two measures of count rate corresponding to dead time losses of 10% and 30% (referred to as CR10 and CR30 , respectively). RESULTS The best-performing prototype amplifier design (implemented at a pixel pitch of 1 mm) exhibited CR10 and CR30 values (expressed in counts per second per pixel) of 8.4 and 21.6 kcps/pixel, respectively. A hypothetical amplifier design was derived by modifying transistor, resistor, and capacitor elements of the prototype amplifier designs. This hypothetical design (implemented at a pitch of 1 mm) exhibited CR10 and CR30 values of 154 and 381 kcps/pixel, respectively. When implemented at a pitch of 0.25 mm, the performance of that design increased to 210 and 491 kcps/pixel, respectively (corresponding to counts per second per unit area of 3.4 and 7.9 Mcps/mm2 ). CONCLUSIONS The simulation methodology described in this paper represents a useful tool for identifying promising designs for the amplifier component of photon counting arrays, as well as evaluating the analog signal and noise performance of those designs. The results obtained from the current study support the hypothesis that large-area, photon counting arrays based on poly-Si transistors can provide clinically useful count rates. Encouraged by these early results, further development of the methodology to assist in the identification and evaluation of even more promising designs, along with development and empirical characterization of prototype designs, is planned.

A multi-channel biopotential recording analog front-end (AFE) with a fully integrated area-efficient driven-right-leg (DRL) circuit is presented in this paper. The proposed AFE includes 10 channels of low-noise capacitive coupled instrumentation amplifier (CCIA), one shared 10-bit SAR ADC and a fully integrated DRL to enhance the system-level common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR). The proposed DRL circuit senses the common-mode at the CCIA output so that the AFE gain is reused as the DRL loop gain. Therefore, area efficient unit-gain buffer with small averaging capacitors can be used in DRL circuit to reduce the circuit area significantly. The proposed AFE has been implemented in a standard 0.18-μm CMOS process. The DRL circuit achieved more than 85% chip area reduction compared to the state-of-art on-chip DRL circuits and maximum 60 dB enhancement to system-level CMRR. Measurement results show high/low AFE gain of 60 dB/54 dB respectively with 1 μA/channel current consumption under 1.0 V power supply. The measured AFE input-referred noise in 1 Hz - 10k Hz range is 4.2 μVrms and the maximum system-level CMRR is 110 dB. We present an image sensor incorporating angle-selective gratings for resolution enhancement in contact imaging applications. Optical structures designed in the CMOS metal layers above each photodiode form the angle-selective gratings that limit the sensor angle of view to $\pm$ 18 $^{\circ }$ , rejecting background light and deblurring the image. The imager is based on a high-gain capacitive transimpedance amplifier pixel using a custom 11fF MOM capacitor, achieving $\text{8.2}\;\text{V s}^{-1} \text{pW}^{-1}$ sensitivity. The pixel includes a leakage current minimization circuit to remove signal-dependent reset switch leakage and the corresponding dark current is $\text{14}\;\text{aA}/{\mu }\text{m}{^2}$ . The resulting 4.7 mm by 2.25 mm sensor (80 by 36 pixels) is designed specifically for intraoperative cancer imaging in order to solve the pervasive challenge of identifying microscopic residual cancer foci in vivo , where they can be removed. We demonstrate imaging and detection of foci containing less than 200 cancer cells labeled with fluorescent biomarkers in 50 ms with signal-to-noise ratios greater than 15 dB and the detection of microscopic residual tumor in mice models. The absence of large optical elements enables extreme miniaturization, allowing manipulation within a small, morphologically complex, tumor cavity.

Magnetic biosensing is an emerging technique for ultra-sensitive point-of-care (PoC) biomolecular detection. However, the large baseline-to-signal ratio and sensor-to-sensor mismatch in magnetoresistive (MR) biosensors severely complicates the design of the analog front-end (AFE) due to the high dynamic range (DR) required. The proposed AFE addresses these issues through new architectural and circuit level techniques including fast settling duty-cycle resistors (DCRs) to reduce readout time and a high frequency interference rejection (HFIR) sampling technique embedded in the ADC to relax the DR requirement. The AFE achieves an input-referred noise of 46.4 nT/√Hz, an input-referred baseline of less than 0.235 mT, and a readout time of 11 ms while consuming just 1.39 mW. Implemented in a 0.18 μm CMOS process, this work has state-of-the-art performance with 22.7× faster readout time, >7.8× lower baseline, and 2.3× lower power than previously reported MR sensor AFEs.

This paper presents a novel two-wired active electrode that achieves ultrahigh input impedance using power supply bootstrapping. The proposed circuit reduces the input capacitance of a buffer amplifier while enabling measurements using leads with only two wires, providing a low-complexity and low-cost solution for interference rejection and artifact reduction in dc-coupled dry-contact biopotential measurements. An implemented prototype shows that, even using standard operational amplifiers, an input capacitance as low as 71 fF can be obtained, maintaining a high impedance in a 0-1 kHz bandwidth, sufficient for ECG, EEG, and EMG measurements. The circuit has a simple and easily replicable implementation that requires no individual adjustment. A common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) above 103 dB at 50 Hz was achieved and the increased rejection to interference due to the potential divider effect was experimentally tested maintaining a 92-dB CMRR at 50 Hz with a 1.2-M Ω source impedance unbalance. ECG measurements were conducted to validate the active electrode against a traditional alternative, and a test with dry-contact EEG electrodes was successfully conducted. Although the proposed circuit is intended to acquire superficial electrophysiological signals using dry electrodes, it can be used for measurement from other high-impedance sources, such as micropipette electrodes. Studying brain activity in vivo requires collecting bioelectrical signals from several microelectrodes simultaneously in order to capture neuron interactions. In this work, we present a new current-reuse analog front-end (AFE), which is scalable to very large numbers of recording channels, thanks to its small implementation silicon area and its low-power consumption. This current-reuse AFE, which is including a low-noise amplifier (LNA) and a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), employs a new fully differential current-mirror topology using fewer transistors, and improving several design parameters, such as power consumption and noise, over previous current-reuse amplifier circuit implementations. We show that the proposed current-reuse amplifier can provide a theoretical noise efficiency factor (NEF) as low as 1.01, which is the lowest reported theoretical NEF provided by an LNA topology. A foue-channel current-reuse AFE implemented in a CMOS 0.18-μm technology is presented as a proof-of-concept. T-network capacitive circuits are used to decrease the size of input capacitors and to increase the gain accuracy in the AFE. The measured performance of the whole AFE is presented. The total power consumption per channel, including the LNA and the PGA stage, is 9 μW (4.5 μW for LNA and 4.5 μW for PGA), for an input referred noise of 3.2 μVrms, achieving a measured NEF of 1.94. The entire AFE presents three selectable gains of 35.04, 43.1, and 49.5 dB, and occupies a die area of 0.072 mm2 per channel. The implemented circuit has a measured inter-channel rejection ratio of 54 dB. In vivo recording results obtained with the proposed AFE are reported. It successfully allows collecting low-amplitude extracellular action potential signals from a tungsten wire microelectrode implanted in the hippocampus of a laboratory mouse.

OBJECTIVE: This research assessed the reduction of peak levels, equivalent energy and sound power of firearm suppressors. DESIGN: The first study evaluated the effect of firearm suppressors at several positions around the firearm for four firearms. The second study assessed the reduction of sound power with a 3-meter hemispherical array of microphones for two firearms. RESULTS: The suppressors reduced exposures at the ear between 17- and 24-dB peak sound pressure level and reduced the 8-hour equivalent A-weighted energy between 9 and 21 dB depending upon the firearm and ammunition. Noise reductions observed for the instructor’s position about a meter behind the shooter were between 20- and 28-dB peak sound pressure and between 11 and 26 dB L(Aeq,8h). Firearm suppressors reduced the measured sound power levels between 2 and 23 dB. Sound power reductions were greater for the low-velocity ammunition than for the same weapons fired with high-velocity ammunition due to the effect of N-waves produced by a supersonic projectile. CONCLUSIONS: Whereas firearms suppressors are an effective engineering control to reduce firearm noise exposures, firearm users should always wear hearing protection whenever using weapons. The cumulative exposures of suppressed firearms can still present a significant hearing risk.

Objective: Conventional brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are often expensive, complex to operate, and lack portability, which confines their use to laboratory settings. Portable, inexpensive BCIs can mitigate these problems, but it remains unclear whether their low-cost design compromises their performance. Therefore, we developed a portable, low-cost BCI and compared its performance to that of a conventional BCI. Methods: The BCI was assembled by integrating a custom electroencephalogram (EEG) amplifier with an open-source microcontroller and a touchscreen. The function of the amplifier was first validated against a commercial bioamplifier, followed by a head-to-head comparison between the custom BCI (using four EEG channels) and a conventional 32-channel BCI. Specifically, five able-bodied subjects were cued to alternate between hand opening/closing and remaining motionless while the BCI decoded their movement state in real time and provided visual feedback through a light emitting diode. Subjects repeated the above task for a total of 10 trials, and were unaware of which system was being used. The performance in each trial was defined as the temporal correlation between the cues and the decoded states. Results: The EEG data simultaneously acquired with the custom and commercial amplifiers were visually similar and highly correlated ( $\rho$ = 0.79). The decoding performances of the custom and conventional BCIs averaged across trials and subjects were 0.70 $\pm$ 0.12 and 0.68 $\pm$ 0.10, respectively, and were not significantly different. Conclusion: The performance of our portable, low-cost BCI is comparable to that of the conventional BCIs. Significance: Platforms, such as the one developed here, are suitable for BCI applications outside of a laboratory.

We present a bidirectional neural interface with a 4-channel biopotential analog-to-digital converter (bioADC) and a 4-channel current-mode stimulator in 180 nm CMOS. The bioADC directly transduces microvolt biopotentials into a digital representation without a voltage-amplification stage. Each bioADC channel comprises a continuous-time first-order $\Delta \Sigma$ modulator with a chopper-stabilized OTA input and current feedback, followed by a second-order comb-filter decimator with programmable oversampling ratio. Each stimulator channel contains two independent digital-to-analog converters for anodic and cathodic current generation. A shared calibration circuit matches the amplitude of the anodic and cathodic currents for charge balancing. Powered from a 1.5 V supply, the analog and digital circuits in each recording channel draw on average $\text{1.54}\; \mu {\rm A}$ and $\text{2.13} \;\mu {\rm A}$ of supply current, respectively. The bioADCs achieve an SNR of $\text{58 dB}$ and a SFDR of ${>} \text{70 dB}$ , for better than 9-b ENOB. Intracranial EEG recordings from an anesthetized rat are shown and compared to simultaneous recordings from a commercial reference system to validate performance in-vivo . Additionally, we demonstrate bidirectional operation by recording cardiac modulation induced through vagus nerve stimulation, and closed-loop control of cardiac rhythm. The micropower operation, direct digital readout, and integration of electrical stimulation circuits make this interface ideally suited for closed-loop neuromodulation applications.

Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring is a set of monitoring techniques consisting of reading electrical activity generated by the nervous system structures during surgeries. In order to guarantee signal quality, contact impedance between the sensing electrodes and the patient’s skin needs to be as low as possible. Hence, monitoring this impedance while signals are measured is an important feature of current medical devices. The most commonly used technique involves injection of a known current and measurement of the voltage drop in the contact interface. This method poses several problems, such as power consumption (critical in battery-powered systems), frequency dependency and regulation issues, which are overcome by using a passive method. The fundamentals of the method proposed in this paper are based on the utilization of the variation suffered by the input random signal when a known resistance is connected in parallel to the input terminals of the low-noise amplifier (LNA) of the analog front-end of the acquisition system. Controlling the connection of the resistors and computing the root mean square of the LNA output voltage has been proved to be a useful tool to assess that the contact impedance is suitably low, allowing the user to know if the neural measurements obtained are valid.

This paper presents a read-out front-end application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for the measurement of tissue impedances. The 10 mm2 2-channel front-end ASIC is fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS technology. The measurement results show that the proposed ASIC operates over a frequency range of 100 Hz up to 10 MHz. The ASIC has 1.22 pW/Hz power performance, with an SNR over 72 dB for frequencies $\leq$ 1 MHz, and over 65 dB SNR for frequencies $\geq$ 1 MHz. The total measured power consumption of the read-out front-end is shown to range from 2.1 to 21.7 mW depending on the input frequency. To achieve a wide dynamic range, the instrumentation amplifier has an adaptive gain control feature, and it employs programmable bias currents and reconfigurable structure to save power while processing low-frequency signals. A dual digital-to-analog converter (DAC) hybrid SAR analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is presented that reduces the power consumption of the ADC driver by sevenfold for frequencies between 4 kHz and 1 MHz.

Probing remote matter with laser light is a ubiquitous technique used in circumstances as diverse as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and barcode scanners. In classical optics, the intensity that can be brought to bear on a remote target is limited by the spot size of the laser at the distance of the target. This spot size has a lower bound determined by the diffraction limit of classical optics. However, amplified femtosecond laser pulses generate intensity sufficient to modify the refractive index of the ambient air and undergo self-focusing. This self-focusing effect leads to the generation of highly intense laser filaments which maintain their intensity and small sub-millimeter diameter size at distances well beyond the classical Rayleigh length. Such intensity provides the capability of remote scanning, imaging, sensing, and spectroscopy with enhanced spatial resolution. We describe a technique for generating filaments with a femtosecond regenerative chirped-pulse amplifier, and for using the resulting filament to conduct imaging and spectroscopic measurements at remote distances of at least several meters.

High-throughput recordings of small current are becoming more common in biosensor applications, including in vivo dopamine measurements, single-cell electrophysiology, photoplethysmography, pulse oximetry, and nanopore recordings. Thus, a highly scalable transimpedance amplifier design is in demand. Half-shared amplifier design is one way to improve the scalability by sharing the non-inverting side of the operational amplifier design for many inverting halves. This method reduces silicon area and power by nearly half compared to using independent operational amplifiers. In this paper, we analyze the scalability of a simple half-shared amplifier structure while investigating the tradeoff of increasing the number of inverting half amplifiers sharing a single non-inverting half. A transimpedance amplifier is designed using the half-shared structure to minimize the size per amplifier. The transimpedance amplifier is based on a current integration of a capacitor. The noise analysis of the integration amplifier is a challenging task because it does not reach a steady-state, thus, being a non-stationary circuit. For frequency analysis, a conversion method is discussed to estimate the noise characteristic in the simulation. The array design of 1024 transimpedance amplifiers is fabricated using a standard 0.35 μ m process and is tested to confirm the validity of above analysis. The amplifier array exhibits high linearity in transimpedance gain (7.00 mV/pA for high gain and 0.86 mV/pA for low gain), low mismatch of 1.65 mV across the entire 1024 amplifier array, and extremely low noise. The technique will be crucial in enabling the fabrication of larger arrays to enable higher throughput measurement tools for biosensor applications.

Postprint This paper presents an integrated biopotential preamplifier architecture targeting applications that simultaneously require high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR), low noise, high input common-mode range (ICMR), and current-efficiency (low Noise Efficiency Factor or NEF). A biopotential preamplifier, which performs well in line with the state-of-the-art of the field while providing enhanced ICMR and CMRR performance, was fabricated in a 0.5 μm CMOS process. Results from measurements show that the gain is 47 dB, the bandwidth ranges from 1 Hz to 7.7 kHz, the equivalent input noise is 1.8 μV rms , the CMRR is 100.5 dB, the ICMR is 1.7 V and the NEF is 3.2.

This paper presents a fully integrated low noise current-to-digital converter based on current-mode continuous-time delta-sigma modulators (CT DSMs). The circuit was realized in standard 0.35 $\mu$ m complimentary metal–oxide–semiconductor process and achieves a noise floor as low as 200 fA $_{{\rm rms}}$ within a bandwidth of 10 kHz. Thanks to the continuous-time architecture, the oversampling together with the implicit anti-aliasing behavior of the current-mode CT DSM prevents the back folding of any out-of-band signals and noises. Running at a sampling frequency of 1.6 MHz, the circuit achieves a measured worst case anti-aliasing filtering of $-$ 110 dB for an out-of-band signal at 1.59 MHz. This characteristic eliminates the need of an anti-aliasing filter, which reduces the complexity as well as the area and power consumption. Two feedback versions, a transistor based as well as a capacitor-based current division have been used to reduce the reference current noise. The transistor-based current division feedback modulator consumes a power of 6.73 mW and occupies an area of 0.63 mm $^2$ , whereas the capacitor based consumes a power of 4.6 mW and occupies an area of 0.32 mm $^2$ . Both of them operate at a supply voltage of $\pm$ 1.5 V.

This paper presents a systematic method for decreasing the amount of transconductors used by an operational transconductance amplifier–capacitor (OTA–C) filter to decrease the power consumption and the active area. An OTA with a local-feedback linearized technique and a transconductance booster is proposed based on the presented method. The proposed OTA combines current division with source degeneration to enhance linearity and implement low transconductance. This topology enables the proposed OTA to drive multiple integration capacitors without an additional output stage. The OTA-based circuit realizes low power consumption by operating under a weak inversion at a supply voltage of 1 V. Thus, a fifth-order ladder-type low-pass Butterworth OTA–C filter is implemented for the acquisition of electrocardiograph signals. The proposed method is validated using a prototype fabricated through a 1P6M 0.18-μm CMOS process. Results show that in ECG signal acquisition, the proposed filter has a signal bandwidth located within 250 Hz, a dynamic range of 61.2 dB, and a power consumption of 41 nW to achieve a figure-of-merit of 5.4 × 10−13. The active area of the filter is 0.24 mm2.

An innovative 3-stage miller compensted, cross-coupled load, based photodiode front end readout is designed for glucose monitoring. The Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) technique is used for the optical sensing of glucose non-invasively. The stable 3-stage open loop amplifier is designed for a gain of 68.3 dB, phase margin of 65°, GBW of 12.6 MHz and has a power consumption of 0.26 mW. The transimpedance amplifier achieves a gain of 84.46 dB, phase margin of 65°, has an input referred noise of 20.4 pAHz and consumes 0.55 mW of power from a 3.3 V supply using a 0.18 $\mu \mathrm{m}$ CMOS technology node.

We present a method for embedding integrated circuit chips in parylene neural probes where Anisotropic Conductive Film (ACF) electrically and physically connects the chip to the probe. Adequate insulation of the assembly is verified up to 150 h in vitro (testing ongoing). A custom-designed 8-to-1 multiplexing amplifier for neural application was fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS process. As a feasibility demonstration, the $830 \mu \mathrm {m}\times 1030 \mu \mathrm {m}$ die was connected to a parylene probe on a glass substrate. Preliminary results of the amplifier tests indicate similar performance in air and in phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and demonstrate around 200 V/V amplification of signals in saline.

This paper presents a novel amplifier that satisfies both low distortion and high efficiency for high-frequency wireless ultrasound systems with limited battery life and size. While increasing the amplifier efficiency helps to address the problems for wireless ultrasound systems, it can cause signal distortion owing to harmonic components. Therefore, a new type of class F amplifier is designed to achieve high efficiency and low distortion. In the amplifier, the resonant circuit at each stage controls the harmonic components to reduce distortion and improve efficiency. Transformers with a large shunt resistor are also helpful to reduce the remaining noise in the input signal. The proposed class F amplifier is tested using simulations, and the voltage and current waveforms are analyzed to achieve correct operation with adequate efficiency and distortion. The measured performance of the class F amplifier has a gain of 23.2 dB and a power added efficiency (PAE) of 88.9% at 25 MHz. The measured DC current is 121 mA with a variance of less than 1% when the PA is operating. We measured the received echo signal through the pulse-echo response using a 25-MHz transducer owing to the compatibility of the designed class F amplifier with high- frequency transducers. The measured total harmonic distortion (THD) of the echo signal was obtained as 4.5% with a slightly low ring-down. The results show that the low THD and high PAE of the new high-efficiency and high-voltage amplifier may increase battery life and reduce the cooling fan size, thus providing a suitable environment for high-frequency wireless ultrasound systems.

Potable electroencephalography (EEG) devices have become critical for important research. They have various applications, such as in brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Numerous recent investigations have focused on the development of dry sensors, but few concern the simultaneous attachment of high-density dry sensors to different regions of the scalp to receive qualified EEG signals from hairy sites. An inflatable and wearable wireless 32-channel EEG device was designed, prototyped, and experimentally validated for making EEG signal measurements; it incorporates spring-loaded dry sensors and a novel gasbag design to solve the problem of interference by hair. The cap is ventilated and incorporates a circuit board and battery with a high-tolerance wireless (Bluetooth) protocol and low power consumption characteristics. The proposed system provides a 500/250 Hz sampling rate, and 24 bit EEG data to meet the BCI system data requirement. Experimental results prove that the proposed EEG system is effective in measuring audio event-related potential, measuring visual event-related potential, and rapid serial visual presentation. Results of this work demonstrate that the proposed EEG cap system performs well in making EEG measurements and is feasible for practical applications.

The stethoscope is a medical acoustic device which is used to auscultate internal body sounds, mainly the heart and lungs. A digital stethoscope overcomes the limitations of a conventional stethoscope as the sound data is transformed into electrical signals which can be amplified, stored, replayed and, more importantly, sent for an expert opinion, making it very useful in telemedicine. With the above in view, a low cost digital stethoscope has been developed which is interfaceble with mobile communication devices. In this instrument sounds from various locations can be captured with the help of an electret condenser microphone. Captured sound is filtered, amplified and processed digitally using an adaptive line enhancement technique to obtain audible and distinct heart sounds.

A broadband sum frequency generation (BB-SFG) spectrometer with multimodal (MM) capabilities was constructed, which could be routinely reconfigured for tabletop experiments in reflection, transmission, and total internal reflection (TIR) geometries, as well as microscopic imaging. The system was constructed using a Ti:sapphire amplifier (800 nm, pulse width = 85 fs, repetition rate = 2 kHz), an optical parameter amplification (OPA) system for production of broadband IR pulses tunable between 1000 and 4000 cm(-1), and two Fabry-Pérot etalons arranged in series for production of narrowband 800 nm pulses. The key feature allowing the MM operation was the nearly collinear alignment of the visible (fixed, 800 nm) and infrared (tunable, 1000-4000 cm(-1)) pulses which were spatially separated. Physical insights discussed in this paper include the comparison of spectral bandwidth produced with 40 and 85 fs pump beams, the improvement of spectral resolution using etalons, the SFG probe volume in bulk analysis, the normalization of SFG signals, the stitching of multiple spectral segments, and the operation in different modes for air/liquid and adsorbate/solid interfaces, bulk samples, as well as spectral imaging combined with principle component analysis (PCA). The SFG spectral features obtained with the MM-BB-SFG system were compared with those obtained with picosecond-scanning-SFG system and high-resolution BB-SFG system (HR-BB-SFG) for dimethyl sulfoxide, α-pinene, and various samples containing cellulose (purified commercial products, Cladophora cell wall, cotton and flax fibers, and onion epidermis cell wall).

Organic transistors are promising platforms for wearable biosensors. However, the strategies to improve signal amplification have yet to be determined, particularly regarding biosensors that generate very weak signals. In this study, an organic voltage amplifier is presented for a lactate sensor on flexible plastic foil. The preamplifier is based on a 3D complementary inverter, which is achieved by vertically stacking complementary transistors with a shared gate between them. The shared gate is extended and functionalized with a lactate oxidase enzyme to detect lactate. The sensing device successfully detects the lactate concentration in the human sweat range (20-60 mm) with high sensitivity (6.82 mV mm-1 ) due to high gain of its amplification. The 3D integration process is cost-effective as it is solution-processable and doubles the number of transistors per unit area. The device presented in this study would pave the way for the development of high-gain noninvasive sweat lactate sensors that can be wearable.

The need for simple and reliable means of respiratory monitoring has existed since the beginnings of medicine. In the present study, we describe the use of color spectrographic analysis of breathing sounds recorded from the external ear canal as a candidate technology to meet this need. A miniature electret microphone was modified with the addition of an adapter to allow it to be placed comfortably in the external ear canal. The amplified signal was then connected to a real-time color spectrogram program running on a laptop personal computer utilizing the Windows operating system. Based on the results obtained, we hypothesize that the real-time display of color spectrogram breathing patterns locally or at a central monitoring station may turn out to be a useful means of respiratory monitoring in patients at increased risk of respiratory depression or other respiratory problems. Finally, we conducted a statistical analysis that suggests that significant spectrogram differences may exist among some groups investigated in the study.

This paper presents a low-power analog front-end (AFE) photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor fabricated in 0.35 µm CMOS process. The AFE amplifies the weak photocurrent from the photodiode (PD) and converts it to a strong voltage at the output. In order to decrease the power consumption, the circuits are designed in subthreshold region; so the total biasing current of the AFE is 10 µ A. Since the large input DC photocurrent is a big issue for the PPG sensing circuit, we apply a DC photocurrent rejection technique by adding a DC current-cancellation loop to reject the large DC photocurrent up to 10 µA. In addition, a pseudo resistor is used to reduce the high-pass corner frequency below 0.5 Hz and Gm-C filter is adapted to reject the out-of-band noise higher than 16 Hz. For the whole sensor, the amplifier chain can achieve a total gain of 140 dBμ and an input integrated noise current of 68.87 pA rms up to 16 Hz.

Two brain signal acquisition (BSA) front-ends incorporating two CMOS ultralow power, low-noise amplifier arrays and serializers operating in mosfet weak inversion region are presented. To boost the amplifier's gain for a given current budget, cross-coupled-pair active load topology is used in the first stages of these two amplifiers. These two BSA front-ends are fabricated in 130 and 180 nm CMOS processes, occupying 5.45 mm $^{2}$ and 0.352 mm $^{2}$ of die areas, respectively (excluding pad rings). The CMOS 130-nm amplifier array is comprised of 64 elements, where each amplifier element consumes 0.216 $\mu$ W from 0.4 V supply, has input-referred noise voltage (IRNoise) of 2.19 $\mu$ V $_{\text{RMS}}$ corresponding to a power efficiency factor (PEF) of 11.7, and occupies 0.044 mm $^{2}$ of die area. The CMOS 180 nm amplifier array employs 4 elements, where each element consumes 0.69 $\mu$ W from 0.6 V supply with IRNoise of 2.3 $\mu$ V $_{\text{RMS}}$ (corresponding to a PEF of 31.3) and 0.051 mm $^{2}$ of die area. Noninvasive electroencephalographic and invasive electrocorticographic signals were recorded real time directly on able-bodied human subjects, showing feasibility of using these analog front-ends for future fully implantable BSA and brain– computer interface systems.

A biopotential acquisition analog front-end (AFE) integrated circuit (IC) is presented. The biopotential AFE includes a capacitively coupled chopper instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) to achieve low input referred noise (IRN) and to block unwanted DC potential signals. A DC servo loop (DSL) is designed to minimize the offset voltage in the chopper amplifier and low frequency respiration artifacts. An AC coupled ripple rejection loop (RRL) is employed to reduce ripple due to chopper stabilization. A capacitive impedance boosting loop (CIBL) is designed to enhance the input impedance and common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) without additional power consumption, even under an external electrode mismatch. The AFE IC consists of two-stage CCIA that include three compensation loops (DSL, RRL, and CIBL) at each CCIA stage. The biopotential AFE is fabricated using a 0.18 mu m one polysilicon and six metal layers (1P6M) complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. The core chip size of the AFE without input/output (I/O) pads is 10.5 mm(2). A fourth-order band-pass filter (BPF) with a pass-band in the band-width from 1 Hz to 100 Hz was integrated to attenuate unwanted signal and noise. The overall gain and band-width are reconfigurable by using programmable capacitors. The IRN is measured to be 0.94 mu V-RMS in the pass band. The maximum amplifying gain of the pass-band was measured as 71.9 dB. The CIBL enhances the CMRR from 57.9 dB to 67 dB at 60 Hz under electrode mismatch conditions.
