Ernest Ludwig Feder was among the most prolific, creative and boldest of rural economists in the decades after the Second World War. Yet much of the work for which he would become most well known - on land reform, dependency and peasant agriculture, particularly in Latin America - was a comparatively late development, starting when he was almost fifty, more than two-thirds of the way through a full and varied life that never conformed to conventional academic criteria and that came to a premature end when he was just seventy-one. In the years since, the relevance of his work has grown, although the number of younger scholars who actually read his books and papers has declined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article introduces the content of the March 2009 issue of the journal "Latin Americanist."

The paper explores the theoretical impact of postcolonial studies in Latin American Intellectual field. To this end, we analyze the main proposals and core problem that this new paradigm raises in the critical and theoretical practice of Latin American Studies. We focus primarily on the contributions of Walter Mignolo, Nelly Richard, Mabel Moraña, Beatriz Sarlo and Cornejo Polar, among the most important contributions from Latin America, as well as in some categories of Spivak and Homi Bhabha thhat allow us to reflect more deeply on the state of this discussion that is still open. In this sense, the question that constantly appear the article is if are possible postcolonial studies in Latin America", What is the theoretical richness the bring to the debate of 'third world'?, Is a more theoretical dominance metropolitan? To approach an answer, we propose to investigate the two positions that are held more firmly in the field of Latin American intellectuals: first one that looks suspiciously arrival of postcolonial studies, and one that seeks to create areas of negotiation and theoretical enrichment . Reviews of the ICTD literature have noted a scarcity of studies about Latin American countries. We investigate (1) what are the alternatives to ICTD and English-language ICTD publication venues researchers utilize to disseminate their work and why they may do so, and (2) what methodological, theoretical, and contextual characteristics these researchers bring to their publications. The study takes a two-pronged approach to answer these questions: a survey of researchers who have conducted ICTD research in Latin America and an analysis of their ICTD publications. We find that researchers use an array of specific alternative and additional terms to describe ICTD research, that methodological and theoretical characteristics of the literature resemble ICTD in general, and that contextual coverage of the region is lacking. Our results prompt a set of recommendations for better incorporating scholarship about Latin America in the ICTD field as well as improving global coverage of the ICTD community. This article is a review of the development of Latin American Studies in Bulgaria since the very beginning of relations between this country and the remote continent in the Western Hemisphere. While research and publications in the first half of 20th century were scarce and more of a travelogue genre, a new and genuine interest appeared after the revolution in Cuba, which was facilitated by close collaboration in respect to the socialist doctrine. Naturally, all research and publications during the Cold War had to fit ideological requirements. After 1989, the situation has changed and full freedom of scholarly research has allowed for a wide range of opinions to be voiced. However, Bulgaria entered a period of economic stagnation and lost most of its economic and trade ties with Latin America. As a result, there are significant difficulties in developing any studies beyond the European cultural space. Nevertheless, various attempts at refreshing connections with the Hispanic world on academic and other levels have been developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Few previous studies in Latin America (LA) have provided data on dietary intake composition with a standardized methodology. The present study aimed to characterize energy intake (EI) and to describe the main food sources of energy in representative samples of the urban population from eight LA countries from the Latin American Study in Nutrition and Health (ELANS).Design: Cross-sectional study. Usual dietary intake was assessed with two non-consecutive 24 h dietary recalls.Setting: Urban areas from eight countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela), September 2014 to July 2015.Subjects: Adolescents and adults aged 15-65 years. Final sample comprised 9218 individuals, of whom 6648 (72·1 %) were considered plausible reporters.Results: Overall, mean EI was 8196 kJ/d (1959 kcal/d), with a balanced distribution of macronutrients (54 % carbohydrate, 30 % fat, 16 % protein). Main food sources of energy were grains, pasta and bread (28 %), followed by meat and eggs (19 %), oils and fats (10 %), non-alcoholic homemade beverages (6 %) and ready-to-drink beverages (6 %). More than 25 % of EI was provided from food sources rich in sugar and fat, like sugary drinks, pastries, chips and candies. Meanwhile, only 18 % of EI was from food sources rich in fibre and micronutrients, such as whole grains, roots, fruits, vegetables, beans, fish and nuts. No critical differences were observed by gender or age.Conclusions: Public health efforts oriented to diminish consumption of refined carbohydrates, meats, oils and sugar and to increase nutrient dense-foods are a priority in the region to drive to a healthier diet. This essay focuses on the state of Hemispheric American Studies in North and South America, focusing on the asymmetrical distribution of sources and knowledge. Topics discussed include the author's opinion that corporate capitalism has caused a concentration of Latin American materials in U.S. research institutions; the lack of research materials regarding comparative studies of the Americas; and criticism and research on Latin America by U.S. scholars.

This article explains why-contrary to predications of influential scholars and foundation representatives in the 1990s-Latin American studies (LAS) entered the new century vibrant and growing rapidly. We posit five realms of critique and innovation from within which, in interaction with traditional strengths of area studies, account for this vibrancy. Because these critiques challenge many inherited premises of LAS, they have faced considerable resistance; the resulting dialogue has made our field more inclusive and stronger. The article is a response by the author to criticism given to his book "Puritan Conquistadors: Iberianizing the Atlantic, 1550-1700" and an essay upon which it was based that was written by Eliga H. Gould. The goal of both projects was to argue that American history cannot only be understood through historiographies. The author believes that the problem between himself and his critic may be the different meanings they have each attached to the words "core" and "peripheries." The author goes criticizes the lack of scholarship in Latin American studies. The connection between Christianity, conquest, and colonization is made by looking at figures such as English privateer Francis Drake and compares him to Spanish conquistadors.
