Novel cross-linked fluorinated acrylate latex was successfully synthesized via the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization, in which methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as the main monomers, and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) and N–N methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) were used as the fluorine monomer and the cross-linked monomer, respectively. Potassium persulfate (KPS) and mixed surfactants of sodium lauryl sulfate and alkyl alcohol polyether (EFS-470) were used as the initiator and emulsifier, respectively. The structure of resultant latex film was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The latex films were tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle (CA), cross-linked degree and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The particle size and its distribution of the latex were measured by the nanoparticle size analyzer and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The factors that have an influence on the properties of the latex and the film are investigated in detail. The stability of the resultant latex was good. The average particles of the latex and its distribution were small and uniform, respectively. Usually, the traditional acrylate polymer latex, which is used as the binder of the coatings, is a linear polymer and properties of the latex film cannot meet with the demand of the high-grade coatings. Presently, there are few reports on the polyacrylate latex modified by diallyl malate, i.e. butanedioic acid,2-hydroxy-, 1,4-di-2-propen-1-yl ester (BAHD) and long fluorocarbon acrylate monomer such as dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) in the open literatures. The purpose of this work is that the cross-linked acrylate latex is prepared which DFMA and BAHD are used as the functional monomer and as a cross-linking monomer, respectively. The cross-linked acrylate latex is prepared which methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) is used as the main monomers and the non-ionic emulsifier isomeric alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (X-407) and the anionic emulsifier sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) are used as emulsifiers. DFMA and BAHD are used as the functional monomer and as a cross-linking monomer, respectively. Factors which have an influence on the properties of the resultant latex and the emulsion polymerization are investigated in detail. The optimal recipe of preparing the latex is obtained as follows: the amount of mixed emulsifiers is 6% and mass ratio of X-470 to SDS is 2:1. When the amount of BAHD is 4.47%, the water absorption rate is reduced greatly. The glass transition temperature is 10 °C. In compassion with the conventional latex, the thermal decomposition temperature is increased by 10 °C. The resultant latex has good stability and small particle size. Purpose: Self-crosslinked long fluorocarbon acrylate polymer latex has good hydrophobic and oleophobicity, weather resistance, aging resistance, stability and other excellent properties, which make the polymer be widely used in coatings, dyes, adhesives and other products. The purpose of this study is to prepare self-crosslinked long fluorocarbon acrylate polymer latex via semi-continuous seeded emulsion technology and carry out comparative study on two different cross-linked monomers. Design/methodology/approach: Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as the main monomers, dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) as the fluoromonomer, hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and N-methylol acrylamide (NMA) as cross-linked monomers, and 1-allyloxy-3–(4-nonylphenol)-2-propanol polyoxyethylene (10) ether (ANPEO10) and 1-allyloxy-3–(4-nonylphenol)-2-propanol polyoxyethylene (10) ether ammonium sulfate (DNS-86) as compound emulsifiers via the semicontinuous-seeded emulsion polymerization. Findings: The properties of the polymer emulsions, which are prepared with two different cross-linked monomers, are compared and discussed, and it is concluded that HPMA is more suitable for the preparation of self-crosslinked polymer emulsions. The formula of the polymer latex is ANPEO10: DNS-86 = 1:1, and the mass ratio of the monomers used in the polymer is MMA: BA: DFMA: HPMA = 14.40:14.40:0.60:0.60. Practical implications: Self-crosslinked long fluorocarbon acrylate polymer latex can be used in many fields such as coatings, dyes, adhesives and other products. Modified latex is prepared via the soap-free emulsion polymerization of ethyl acetate (VAc) and vinyl versatate (VeoVa10). DFHMA is used as modified monomers. The composite surfactants of SR-10 and ANPEO-10 are used as the composite emulsifiers. The polymerization is initiated by potassium sulfate (KPS). The structure of latex film was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The latex films were tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and contact angle (CA) determinator. The particle size of the latex emulsion particle size is determined by the Zetatrac dynamic light scatter. Results show that the optimum condition of preparing the modified latex can be obtained, i.e. the amount of emulsifier is 4.0%; the mass ratio of SR-10 to ANPEO-10 is 1:1; the amount of initiator is 0.5%; the mass ratio ofVAc to VeoVa10 is 1:1; the amount of DFHMA is 5.0%. The appearance of the latex is blue and translucent with a small particle size. The conversion rate is more than 98%. Purpose: Silane cross-linkers have been used to strengthen the mechanical stabilities and friction resistance of plastic products. Therefore, the effect of silane cross-linkers on latex has been studied through preparing modified self-cross-linking long fluorocarbon polyacrylate latex. In this paper, nonionic surfactant alcohol ether glycoside (AEG1000) and anionic polymerizable surfactant 1-allyloxy-3-(4-nonylphenol)-2-propanol polyoxyethylene (10) ether ammonium sulfate (DNS-86) acted as mixed emulsifier and 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570) and bis (2-ethylhexyl) maleate (DOM) were used as functional monomers. Design/methodology/approach: The modified acrylate polymer latex was synthesized through the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) and hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) as main monomers. Potassium persulfate (KPS) was applied to initiate polymerization reaction, nonionic surfactant AEG1000 and DNS-86 acted as emulsifier, KH-570 and DOM were used as functional monomers, respectively. Findings: The optimum conditions of synthesizing the modified latex were the following. The mass ratio of monomers containing MMA, BA, DFMA, HPMA, KH-570 and DOM was 13.58:13.58:0.90:1.20:0.15:0.60, the usage of initiator KPS was 0.5% of the total weight of monomers and the amount of emulsifier was 7% of all monomers with AEG1000:DNS-86 = 1:1. The results indicated that the conversion of monomer was 99% and the coagulation was about 2.0%. Originality/value: The resultant latex was modified silane cross-linker KH-570 and DOM, which positively affected the comprehensive properties of latex and its film. The long carbon chain monomer modified polyacrylate latex was successfully prepared by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization. In this work, methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate were used as main monomers; stearyl acrylate was used as functional monomer, which were emulsified with the novel mixed surfactants of disodium laureth sulfosuccinate (AEMES) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (OP-10) and initiated with 2,2′-azobis (2-methyl propion- amidine) dihydrochloride initiator. The novel vinyl acetate (VAc)/vinyl neo-decanoate (VeoVa10)/dibutyl maleate/triethoxy vinyl silane quadripolymer latex was prepared via the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization emulsified with disodium laureth sulfosuccinate (AEMES) as anionic surfactant and beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) mixture as emulsifier and initiated with potassium persulfate (KPS), respectively. The chemical compositions of copolymer was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectromer (FTIR). The glass transition temperature (T g) of the copolymer was measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The water resistance of the film was assessed by the water contact angle measurement. The conditions of preparing the novel latex were optimized and obtained as follows. The amount of AEMES and β-CD mixtures were 6 wt% and the mass ratio of AEMES to β-CD were 1:1. The dosage of KPS was 0.6 wt% and the mass ratio of VAc to VeoVa10 was 3:1. The amount of dibutyl maleate and triethoxy vinyl silane was 4% and 3%, respectively. The novel fluoro-silicone polyacrylate latex was successfully synthesized in the presence of a novel green mixed emulsifier of β -cyclodextrin (β -CD) and sodium lauroyl glutamate (SLG) by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization, which was initiated with potassium persulphate. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as the main monomers, while hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) were used as the functional monomers. The resultant latex and its film were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and contact angle determinator, respectively. The optimum conditions of preparing the fluoro-silicone polyacrylate latex are as follows: the amount of compound emulsifiers are 7.0%; β -CD: SLG = 1:2; the amount of initiator is 0.7%; the appropriate proportion of main monomer of MMA: BA = 1:1; and the amounts of HFMA and VTES are 6.0% and 4.0%, respectively. In this case, the resultant latex has high conversion rate, low gel rate and good stability. Purpose Motivated by the globally increasing concern over environmental protection, the interest of a large part of the scientific community focuses on the development of green surfactants aiming to replace traditional toxic surfactants-based alternatives. The purpose of this paper is to prepare acrylate copolymer latex modified with fluorine and silicone monomer, which is emulsified with the green surfactants of sodium rosinate and alkyl polyglycoside (APG).Design/methodology/approach A series of acrylic copolymer latexes containing fluorine–silicon have been prepared by semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerisation of mixed monomers of methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), hexafluorobutylmethacrylate (HFMA) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) and emulsified by green mixed surfactants of sodium rosinate and APG.Findings The optimum recipe of preparing the emulsion is as follows: the amount of emulsifiers is 6 per cent and the mass ratio of sodium rosinate to APG is 1:3. The amount of initiator is 0.4 per cent, and the amounts of the silicon monomer and fluorine monomer are 5 and 7 per cent, respectively. The polyacrylate latex containing fluorine and silicon were successfully synthesized by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization in the presence of the mixed emulsifier of novel sodium lauroyl glutamate (SLG) anion surfactant and BCE-10 nonionic surfactant, which methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were used as main monomers and hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) were used as the functional monomers. Potassium persulfate (KPS) was used as the initiator. The structural groups of the latex films were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermal performance of the film was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis. The latex particle size and its distribution were measured by the dynamic light scattering detector. Furthermore, surface hydrophobicity of the latex film was examined by measurement of water contact angle (WCA). WCA and thermal stability of the film are increased with the increased amount of HFMA and VTES. Fluoro-silicone modified polyacrylate latex was successfully prepared by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization in the presence of a green mixed emulsifier consisting of cashew phenol polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate (BCE-10B) anionic surfactant and alkyl polyglycoside (APG) nonionic surfactant, in which the mixed monomers were initiated with potassium persulfate (KPS). The structure and properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle (CA), respectively. Results show that the optimal conditions of synthesizing the novel emulsion are as follows: the total concentration of mixed emulsifiers is 5.0%; the optimum mass ratio of APG to BCE-10B is 2:1; the amount of initiator is 0.6%; the composition of main monomers of MMA:BA = 1:1; and the concentrations of HFMA and VTES are 4.0 and 6%, respectively. The novel cationic polyacrylate latex containing fluorine silicon was successfully prepared via soap-free emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyltriethoxysilane and hexafluorobutylmethacrylate in water phase, which were initiated with water soluble azo initiator and emulsified with the mixed surfactants polymerizable emulsifier and OP-10. The novel poly (AN-BA-DFMA) was prepared via semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization. The resultant novel latex is characterized with FTIR and DSC. The reaction conditions for preparing the novel latex are optimized and studied in detail. Results show that the novel latex with small particle size and good stability and hydrophobicity can be obtained when the amount of emulsifiers is 6.0%, the mass ratio of OP-10 to SDBS is 2.0:1.0, and the amount of initiator and DFMA is 2.5% and 20%, respectively. The nanometre fluorinated acrylate latex was prepared via semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerisation of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and hexafluorobutyl acrylate in water phase when gemini surfactant and 2,2′-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)propane] dihydrochloride are used to be emulsifier and initiator, respectively. The resultant latex is characterised by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, contact angle measurements, dynamic light scattering and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). FTIR spectrum identifies the formation of terpolymer. DSC confirms that the latex is a kind of random terpolymer and the consistency among the chain segment is fairly good. The average particle size of latex is decreased with the increase of the amount of gemini surfactant. The particle size of resultant latex is 22.4 nm and is further confirmed by transmission electron microscope when the amount of gemini surfactant is 3%. However, the viscosity of latex is increased with the increase of the amount of gemini surfactant. Abstract: Double fluorinated acrylate latex (DFAL) has been successfully prepared by macromolecule reaction between m-trifluoromethylphenylamine (m-TFMPA) and the single fluorinated acrylate latex (SFAL), which is prepared by semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) 2-(perfluoro-(1,1-bis-isopropyl)-2-propenyl)oxyethyl methacrylate (POMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The resultant DFAL is characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, contact angle determinator, dynamic light scattering detector and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Results show that the contact angle of DFAL film is improved in comparison with that of SFAL film. The surface properties especially the contact angle of the film with annealing have been improved greatly because more fluorine atom is introduced into the molecule of acrylate latex and moves to the surface of the film.
