This study presents a comprehensive palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the southern part of the Danube–Tisza interfluve in the Carpathian Basin from the Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene, addressing the region's response to global climate forcings and local environmental factors based on multi-proxy analyses of two key protected areas: the Katymár brickyard and the hay meadows and loess banks of Hajós. By integrating radiocarbon-dated malacological, macrobotanical, pollen, phytolith, geochemical, and sedimentological analyses, it was possible to provide a picture of past climate–ecosystem interactions. The Katymár North sequence provides an extended chronology from Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3, ca. 36,000 cal BP) through the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and into the Early Holocene, while the Hajós sequence offers high-resolution data for the LGM–Holocene transition. By the late Ice Age, humidity and surface moisture superseded temperature as primary palaeoecological limiting factors, promoting ecotone-like forest–steppe environments during cooling periods. Summary Early studies of the textbook mixed‐ploidy system Biscutella laevigata highlighted diploids restricted to never‐glaciated lowlands and tetraploids at high elevations across the European Alps, promoting the hypothesis that whole‐genome duplication (WGD) is advantageous under environmental changes. Here we addressed long‐held hypotheses on the role of hybridisation at the origin of the tetraploids, their single vs multiple origins, and whether a shift in climatic niche accompanied WGD. Climatic niche modelling together with spatial genetics and coalescent modelling based on ddRAD‐seq genotyping of 17 diploid and 19 tetraploid populations was used to revisit the evolution of this species complex in space and time. Diploids differentiated into four genetic lineages corresponding to allopatric glacial refugia at the onset of the last ice age, whereas tetraploids displaying tetrasomic inheritance formed a uniform group that originated from southern diploids before the last glacial maximum. Derived from diploids occurring at high elevation, autotetraploids likely inherited their adaptation to high elevation rather than having evolved it through or after WGD. They further presented considerable postglacial expansion across the Alps and underwent admixture with diploids. Although the underpinnings of the successful expansion of autotetraploids remain elusive, differentiation in B. laevigata was chiefly driven by the glacial history of the Alps. Determining the timing and extent of Quaternary glaciations around the globe is critical to understanding the drivers behind climate change and glacier fluctuations. Evidence from the southern mid-latitudes indicates that local glacial maxima preceded the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), implying that feedbacks in the climate system or ice dynamics played a role beyond the underlying orbital forcings. To shed light on these processes, we investigated the glacial landforms shaped and deposited by the Lago Argentino glacier (50° S), an outlet lobe of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet, in southern Argentina. We mapped geomorphological features on the landscape and dated moraine boulders and outwash sediments using 10Be cosmogenic nuclides and feldspar infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) to constrain the chronology of glacial advance and retreat. We report that the Lago Argentino glacier lobe reached more extensive limits prior to the global LGM, advancing during the middle to late Pleistocene between 243–132 ka and during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3), culminating at 44.5 ± 8.0 and at 36.6 ± 1.0 ka. Our results indicate that the most extensive advance of the last glacial cycle occurred during MIS 3, and we hypothesize that this was a result of longer and colder winters, as well as increased precipitation delivered by a latitudinal migration of the Southern Westerly Winds belt, highlighting the role of local and regional climate feedbacks in modulating ice mass changes in the southern mid-latitudes. Introduction: Quaternary glaciations, in particular the last glacial maximum (LGM), have shaped the contemporary distribution of many species. In Europe, survival of temperate species during range contractions was mainly associated with refugia in Mediterranean peninsulas, allowing south to north recolonization. Additionally, the Ponto-Caspian refugium provided an east to west migration route. Methods: Here, we investigated genetic diversity and structure of the dispersal-restricted Primula vulgaris Huds., a temperate herb of supposed Caucasian origin, using 12 highly polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci to trace the colonization of this species in three European regions. We studied 38 populations, namely an eastern mountainous region (Caucasus), a central region (Carpathian Mountains and Dinaric Alps) and a western lowland region (North European Plain). The role of an eastern refugium of the species was tested by performing Approximate Bayesian computation analyses to elucidate its demographic and phylogeographic history, detecting bottleneck and expansion events, and estimating effective (ancestral and current) population sizes and time of divergence. Results and discussion: We found the eastern and central regions featuring the highest allelic richness and genetic differentiation being strong between and within regions. Stepwise-like mutation processes (RST > FST), together with isolation-by-distance patterns, contributed to genetic differentiation. Demographic event models showed that P. vulgaris experienced bottlenecks as well as expansions across its range during the Quaternary glacial cycles, with the last expansion about 6,000, 4,000, and 2,000 generations ago for eastern, central, and western populations, respectively. The best supported origin model pointed to the Caucasus population being closest to an ancestral situation, and from where central and western populations diverged subsequently. Divergence time of the Caucasus populations from an ancestral lineage referred to the Upper Pleistocene (Middle Weichselian). Divergence of Carpathian populations, including a Lower Danube valley corridor, was estimated during and across the LGM (Late Weichselian), confirming central populations as potential secondary cryptic refugium. Western populations recently diverged during the Holocene, most probably in the Atlanticum phase (7,000-3,900 years ago). Numerous studies have revealed that past geological events and climatic fluctuations had profoundly affected the genetic structure and demographic patterns of species. However, related species with overlapping ranges may have responded to such environmental changes in different ways. In this study, we compared the genetic structure and population dynamics of two typical desert shrubs with overlapping distributions in northern China, Nitraria tangutorum and Nitraria sphaerocarpa, based on chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) variations and species distribution models. We sequenced two cpDNA fragments (trnH-trnA and atpHatpI) in 633 individuals sampled from 52 natural populations. Twenty-four chlorotypes, including eight rare chlorotypes, were identified, and a single dominant haplotype (H4) widely occurred in the entire geographical ranges of the two species. There were also a few distinctive chlorotypes fixed in different geographical regions. Population structure analyses suggested that the two species had significantly different levels of total genetic diversity and interpopulation differentiation, which was highly likely correlated with the special habitat preferences of the two species. A clear phylogeographic structure was identified to exist among populations of N. sphaerocarpa, but not exist for N. tangutorum. The neutral tests, together with the distribution of pairwise differences revealed that N. tangutorum experienced a sudden demographic expansion, and its expansion approximately occurred between 21 and 7 Kya before present, while a rapid range expansion was not identified for N. sphaerocarpa. The ecological niche modeling (ENM) analysis indicated that the potential ranges of two species apparently fluctuated during the past and present periods, with obvious contraction in the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and recolonization in the present, respectively, comparing to the Last Interglacial (LIG). These findings suggest that the two species extensively occurred in the Northwest of China before the Quaternary, and the current populations of them originated from a few separated glacial refugia following their habitat fragmentation in the Quarternary. Our results provide new insights on the impact of past geological and climatic fluctuations on the population dynamics of desert plants in northwestern China, and further enforce the hypothesis that there were several independent glacial refugia for these species during the Quaternary glaciations. How the near-shore marine benthic communities survived Quaternary glaciations in Antarctica is a major question for Southern Ocean biogeographers. Several hypotheses that consider life-history traits, such as bathymetric ranges and developmental modes, have been proposed. Nearshore species with high dispersive potential are expected to show star-like genealogies, with broadly distributed haplotypes surrounded by closely related variants at low frequencies, a consequence of rapid population post-glacial expansion mediated by larvae. By contrast, shallow-water taxa with low dispersal potential are expected to evidence marked genetic structure or even consist of separate cryptic species, due to their survival in small refugial populations subject to repeated bottlenecks. In this study we performed phylogeographic analyses on the high-latitude littorinid Laevilacunaria antarctica across its distribution from maritime Antarctica to South Georgia. This species is a highly abundant near-shore gastropod, commonly found on macroalgae, with low autonomous vagility and exhibits benthic protected development with no free-living dispersive stages. Such characteristics make this species a suitable model to test the above hypotheses. Contrary to low dispersal potential predictions, L. antarctica comprises a single unstructured unit across its distribution in maritime Antarctica, exhibiting a typical high-dispersal star-like, short-branched genealogy centered on a dominant broadly distributed haplotype. The South Georgia population, however, consists of a separate genetic unit, strongly differentiated from those of the maritime Antarctic. We estimate that these two genetic groups separated ~1.2 My, long before the Last Glacial Maximum and evolved independently in these areas. Our results thus provide partial support for the expected pattern for a near-shore marine benthic species with low innate dispersive potential. On a wider geographic scale (maritime Antarctica vs South Georgia), our results in L. antarctica provide support for the expected pattern for a near-shore marine benthic species with low innate dispersive potential. Constraining the timing and extent of Quaternary glaciations in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is significant for the reconstruction of paleoclimatic environment and understanding the interrelationships among climate, tectonics, and glacial systems. We investigated the late Quaternary glacial history of the Qinggulong and Juequ valleys in the Taniantaweng Mountains, southeastern TP, using cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure dating. Four major glacial events were identified based on 26 10Be ages. The exposure ages of the oldest late Quaternary glaciation correspond to Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 6. The maximum glacial extent was dated to 48.5–41.1 ka (MIS 3), during the last glaciation, and was more advanced than that of the last glacial maximum (LGM). Geochronology and geomorphological evidence indicate that multiple glacial fluctuations occurred in the study area during the Early–Middle Holocene. These glacial fluctuations likely were driven by the North Atlantic climate oscillations, summer solar insolation variability, Asian summer monsoon intensity, and CO2 concentration. All else equal, if the ocean's "biological [carbon] pump" strengthens, the dissolved oxygen (O2) content of the ocean interior declines. Confidence is now high that the ocean interior as a whole contained less oxygen during the ice ages. This is strong evidence that the ocean's biological pump stored more carbon in the ocean interior during the ice ages, providing the core of an explanation for the lower atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations of the ice ages. Vollmer et al. (2022, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021PA004339) combine proxies for the oxygen and nutrient content of bottom waters to show that the ocean nutrient reservoir was more completely harnessed by the biological pump during the Last Glacial Maximum, with an increase in the proportion of dissolved nutrients in the ocean interior that were "regenerated" (transported as sinking organic matter from the ocean surface to the interior) rather than "preformed" (transported to the interior as dissolved nutrients by ocean circulation). This points to changes in the Southern Ocean, the dominant source of preformed nutrients in the modern ocean, with an apparent additional contribution from a decline in the preformed nutrient content of North Atlantic‐formed interior water. Vollmer et al. also find a lack of LGM‐to‐Holocene difference in the preformed 13C/12C ratio of dissolved inorganic carbon. This finding may allow future studies to resolve which of the proposed Southern Ocean mechanisms was most responsible for enhanced ocean CO2 storage during the ice ages: (a) coupled changes in ocean circulation and biological productivity, or (b) physical limitations on air‐sea gas exchange. The expansion of oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) within the ocean's interior is anticipated to be a major consequence of anthropogenic climate change, but past changes in ODZs are poorly defined. Recent mapping efforts have revealed plumes of the redox‐active metal cobalt within ODZs, driving a basin‐scale correlation between high cobalt and low O2. Here, we investigate the cobalt flux to Equatorial Pacific sediments along the Line Islands Ridge as a novel record of basin‐scale fluctuations in ODZ extent. After accounting for remobilization by diagenesis, we document a ∼40% increase in cobalt accumulation over the last glacial period, with a more pronounced peak during the Last Glacial Maximum, indicative of larger ODZs compared to the Holocene. Our results link ODZ expansion with colder climates and lend support to model‐based assertions that ongoing deoxygenation may reflect a transient response to warming. Background: Climate fluctuations during the Pleistocene and mountain uplift are vital driving forces affecting geographic distribution. Here, we ask how an annual plant responded to the Pleistocene glacial cycles. Methods: In this study, we analyzed the population demographic history of the annual herb Swertia tetraptera Maxim (Gentianaceae) endemic to Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). A total of 301 individuals from 35 populations of S. tetraptera were analyzed based on two maternally inherited chloroplast fragments (trnL-trnF and trnS-trnG). Phylogeographic analysis was combined with species distribution modeling to detect the genetic variations in S. tetraptera. Results: The genetic diversity of S. tetraptera was high, likely due to its wide natural range, high proportion of endemic haplotypes and evolutionary history. Fifty-four haplotypes were identified in S. tetraptera. Only a few haplotypes were widespread (Hap_4, Hap_1, Hap_3), which were dispersed throughout the present geographical range of S. tetraptera, while many haplotypes were confined to single populations. The cpDNA dataset showed that phylogeographic structuring was lacking across the distribution range of S. tetraptera. Analyses of molecular variance showed that most genetic variation was found within populations (70.51%). In addition, the relationships of the haplotypes were almost completely unresolved by phylogenetic reconstruction. Both mismatch distribution analysis and neutrality tests showed a recent expansion across the distribution range of S. tetraptera. The MaxEnt analysis showed that S. tetraptera had a narrow distribution range during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and a wide distribution range during the current time, with predictions into the future showing the distribution range of S. tetraptera expanding. Conclusion: Our study implies that the current geographic and genetic distribution of S. tetraptera is likely to have been shaped by Quaternary periods. Multiple microrefugia of S. tetraptera existed during Quaternary glaciations. Rapid intraspecific diversification and hybridization and/or introgression may have played a vital role in shaping the current distribution patterns of S. tetraptera. The distribution range of S. tetraptera appeared to have experienced contraction during the LGM; in the future, when the global climate becomes warmer with rising carbon dioxide levels, the distribution of S. tetraptera will expand. The Last Glacial Maximum extent of the North American Ice Sheets is well constrained empirically but has proven to be challenging to simulate with coupled Climate‐Ice Sheet models. Coupled Climate‐Ice Sheet models are often too computationally expensive to sufficiently explore uncertainty in input parameters, and it is unlikely that values calibrated to reproduce modern ice sheets will reproduce the known extent of the ice at the Last Glacial Maximum. To address this, we run an ensemble with a coupled Climate‐Ice Sheet model (FAMOUS‐ice), simulating the final stages of growth of the last North American Ice Sheets' maximum extent. Using this large ensemble approach, we explore the influence of numerous uncertain ice sheet albedo, ice sheet dynamics, atmospheric, and oceanic parameters on the ice sheet extent. We find that ice sheet albedo parameters determine the majority of uncertainty when simulating the Last Glacial Maximum North American Ice Sheets. Importantly, different albedo parameters are needed to produce a good match to the Last Glacial Maximum North American Ice Sheets than have previously been used to model the contemporary Greenland Ice Sheet due to differences in cloud cover over ablation zones. Thus, calibrating coupled climate‐ice sheet models on one ice sheet may produce strong biases when the model is applied to a new domain. The extent of this ice sheet is well‐understood after decades of intensive data collection, but producing a computer simulation of the ice sheet which matches our observations has been a challenge. This is partly because of uncertainty about the "correct" model set‐up to create the best simulation, and partly because the computer models used in the simulations require large computing resources. In this paper, we present a series of simulations of the North American Ice Sheet at the peak of the last ice age using a fast‐running computer model in which the atmosphere and ice sheets interact. We run hundreds of simulations to tackle the uncertainty about the optimum values for unknown input parameters. We find that the model's representation of how reflective the ice sheet surface is has the most impact on the size and shape of the simulated ice sheet. Importantly, the parameter values that produce the best simulations of modern‐day Greenland produce poor simulations of the North American Ice Sheets during the last ice age, calling into question whether the parameters chosen for modern Greenland are appropriate from simulating ice sheets under different conditions. The genus Symplocarpus in basal Araceae includes both thermogenic and non/slightly thermogenic species that prefer cold environments. If floral thermogenesis of Symplocarpus contributes to cold adaptation, it would be expected that thermogenic species have a larger habitat than non/slightly thermogenic species during an ice age, leading to increased genetic diversity in the current population. To address this question, potential distribution in past environment predicted by ecological niche modeling (ENM), genetic diversity, and population structure of chloroplast and genome‐wide single nucleotide polymorphisms were compared between thermogenic Symplocarpus renifolius and non/slightly thermogenic Symplocarpus nipponicus. ENM revealed that the distribution of S. nipponicus decreased, whereas that of S. renifolius expanded in the Last Glacial Maximum. Phylogeographic analyses have shown that the population structures of the two species were genetically segmented and that the genetic diversity of S. renifolius was higher than that of S. nipponicus. The phylogenetic relationship between chloroplast and nuclear DNA is topologically different in the two species, which may be due to the asymmetric gene flow ubiquitously observed in plants. The results of this study imply that floral thermogenesis of Symplocarpus contributes to expanding the distribution during an ice age, resulting in increased genetic diversity due to cold adaptation. During the Late Pleistocene, major parts of North America were periodically covered by ice sheets. However, there are still questions about whether ice‐free refugia were present in the Alexander Archipelago along the Southeast (SE) Alaska coast during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Numerous subfossils have been recovered from caves in SE Alaska, including American black (Ursus americanus) and brown (U. arctos) bears, which today are found in the Alexander Archipelago but are genetically distinct from mainland bear populations. Hence, these bear species offer an ideal system to investigate long‐term occupation, potential refugial survival and lineage turnover. Here, we present genetic analyses based on 99 new complete mitochondrial genomes from ancient and modern brown and black bears spanning the last ~45,000 years. Black bears form two SE Alaskan subclades, one preglacial and another postglacial, that diverged >100,000 years ago. All postglacial ancient brown bears are closely related to modern brown bears in the archipelago, while a single preglacial brown bear is found in a distantly related clade. A hiatus in the bear subfossil record around the LGM and the deep split of their pre‐ and postglacial subclades fail to support a hypothesis of continuous occupancy in SE Alaska throughout the LGM for either species. Our results are consistent with an absence of refugia along the SE Alaska coast, but indicate that vegetation quickly expanded after deglaciation, allowing bears to recolonize the area after a short‐lived LGM peak. The Southern Hemisphere westerly winds influence deep ocean circulation and carbon storage. While the westerlies are hypothesized to play a key role in regulating atmospheric CO2 over glacial‐interglacial cycles, past changes in their position and strength remain poorly constrained. Here, we use a compilation of planktic foraminiferal δ18O from across the Southern Ocean and emergent relationships within an ensemble of climate models to reconstruct changes in the Southern Hemisphere surface westerlies over the last deglaciation. We infer a 4.8° (2.9–7.1°, 95% confidence interval) equatorward shift and about a 25% weakening of the westerlies during the Last Glacial Maximum (20 ka) relative to the mid‐Holocene (6.5 ka). Climate models from the Palaeoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project substantially underestimate this inferred equatorward wind shift. According to our reconstruction, the poleward shift in the westerlies over deglaciation closely mirrors the rise in atmospheric CO2 (R2 = 0.98). Experiments with a 0.25° resolution ocean‐sea‐ice‐carbon model suggest that shifting the westerlies equatorward reduces the overturning rate of the ocean below 2 km depth, leading to a suppression of CO2 outgassing from the polar Southern Ocean. Our results support a role for the westerly winds in driving the deglacial CO2 rise, and suggest outgassing of natural CO2 from the Southern Ocean is likely to increase as the westerlies shift poleward due to anthropogenic warming. Understanding how the westerlies have varied in the past is challenging as we have few methods to track the winds directly. Here we use oxygen isotopes in foraminiferal shells to track changes in the broad‐scale pattern of sea surface temperature across the Southern Ocean, which we link to changes in the winds using climate models. We find the westerly winds were displaced around 5° equatorward during the cold climate of the last ice age, and that the poleward shift in the winds we observe as the earth warmed out of the ice age bears an uncanny resemblance to the increase in atmospheric CO2. We then force the winds in a climate model toward the equator in a similar manner to the shift we observe in the ice age, and find the model stores more carbon in the ocean. Our results support a link between shifts in the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds and atmospheric CO2. The Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Plain records sea-level oscillations driven by climatic changes during Quaternary glaciations, represented as four lagoon-barrier systems, the last one forming after the last glacial maximum and still active. Marine trace fossils are reported in the Pleistocene deposits, but terrestrial burrows also occur in the eolian deposits. The insect trace fossil assemblages from the uppermost Pleistocene deposits of the lagoon-barrier system III are used as relative proxies to infer the climate regimes that controlled sedimentation prior to the last glacial maximum. Two suites occur in the eolian deposits: the Vondrichnus suite, dominated by structures produced by termites, in the basal eolian beds; and the Celliforma suite, dominated by hymenopteran (bees and wasps) structures, in the upper eolian beds. The dominance of termite nests indicates humid conditions. The shift upward to the Celliforma suite signals a change in the humidity regime and the prevalence of drier conditions. The stratigraphic position of the ichnoassemblage, above the uppermost Pleistocene marine transgressive beds that formed during the last interglacial and below the record of the last glacial maximum in this coastal plain, suggests that the last glacial interval controlled this humid-dry fluctuation. The ocean's immense ability to store and release heat on centennial to millennial time scales modulates the impacts of climate perturbations. To gain a better understanding of past variations in mean ocean temperature (MOT), a noble gas‐based proxy measured from ancient air in ice cores has been developed. Here we assess non‐temperature effects that may influence the atmospheric noble gas ratios reconstructed from polar ice and how they impact the temperature signal with an intermediate complexity Earth system model. We find that changes in wind speed, sea‐ice extent, and ocean circulation have partially compensating effects on mean‐ocean noble gas saturation, leading to a slight reduction of noble gas undersaturation at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Taking these effects and ice core measurements into account, our model suggests a revised MOT difference between the LGM and pre‐industrial of −2.1 ± 0.7°C that is also in improved agreement with other independent temperature reconstructions. To better understand how the ocean responds to climate change over hundreds to thousands of years, an indirect measure for the mean ocean temperature (MOT) based on the temperature‐dependent solubility of noble gases has been developed. Noble gas concentrations of the past atmosphere are archived in air bubbles in polar ice cores, which have been used to reconstruct the MOT of the past 20,000 years when Earth's climate was propelled out of the last ice age. However, uncertainties remain regarding critical parameters that are required to derive the correct MOT of the past. Here we make use of an Earth system model that explicitly simulates the noble gases and allows us to assess these parameters in detail under modern and past climate conditions. We find that changes in wind, sea‐ice, and ocean circulation all play important roles in the partitioning of noble gases between the atmosphere and ocean. By taking these effects into account our model suggests a revised best‐estimate MOT cooling of the last ice age to −2.1 ± 0.7°C, which is about 0.5°C warmer than previous estimates. Sedimentary deposits from the northern South China Sea (SCS) can provide important constraints on past changes in ocean currents and the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) in this region. However, the interpretation of such records spanning the last deglaciation is complicated because sea‐level change may also have influenced the depositional processes and patterns. Here, we present new records of grain size, clay mineralogy, and magnetic mineralogy spanning the past 24 kyr from both shallow and deep‐water sediment cores in the northern SCS. Our multi‐proxy comparison among multiple cores helps constrain the influence of sea‐level change, providing confidence in interpreting the regional climate‐forced signals. After accounting for the influence of sea‐level change, we find that these multi‐proxy records reflect a combination of changes in (a) the strength of the North Pacific Intermediate Water inflow, (b) the EASM strength, and (c) the Kuroshio Current extent. Overall, this study provides new insights into the roles of varying terrestrial weathering and oceanographic processes in controlling the depositional record on the northern SCS margin in response to climate and sea‐level fluctuations. Furthermore, millennial‐scale variability in the North Pacific Intermediate Water inflow can be traced using changes in magnetic mineralogy and the inflow appears to have been stronger at the end of the last ice age. Offshore meteoric groundwater (OMG) has long been hypothesized to be a driver of seafloor geomorphic processes in continental margins worldwide. Testing this hypothesis has been challenging because of our limited understanding of the distribution and rate of OMG flow and seepage, and their efficacy as erosive/destabilizing agents. Here we carry out numerical simulations of groundwater flow and slope stability using conceptual models and evolving stratigraphy—for passive siliciclastic and carbonate margin cases—to assess whether OMG and its evolution during a late Quaternary glacial cycle can generate the pore pressures required to trigger mechanical instabilities on the seafloor. Conceptual model results show that mechanical instabilities using OMG flow are most likely to occur in the outer shelf to upper slope, at or shortly before the Last Glacial Maximum sea‐level lowstand. Models with evolving stratigraphy show that OMG flow is a key driver of pore pressure development and instability in the carbonate margin case. In the siliciclastic margin case, OMG flow plays a secondary role in preconditioning the slope to failure. The higher degree of spatial/stratigraphic heterogeneity of carbonate margins, lower shear strengths of their sediments, and limited generation of overpressures by sediment loading may explain the higher susceptibility of carbonate margins, in comparison to siliciclastic margins, to mechanical instability by OMG flow. OMG likely played a more significant role in carbonate margin geomorphology (e.g., Bahamas, Maldives) than currently thought. However, we still have a poor understanding of how groundwater behaves in the sub‐seafloor and whether it can erode seafloor sediments. In this study, we test this hypothesis by using conceptual and realistic numerical models of two common types of seafloor margins—siliciclastic and carbonate—to assess the role of groundwater in making the seafloor susceptible to erosion. We show that the flow of groundwater offshore could have driven seafloor erosion close to the shelf break during the Last Ice Age, when sea level was lower than at present. Carbonate margins are more susceptible to this type of failure than siliciclastic margins. This may be explained by the higher variability in sediment properties across carbonate margins as well as the lower strength of their sediments. Groundwater has likely played an important role in shaping the seafloor in carbonate margins, and it may be responsible for landforms such as canyons, scars, and depressions in the Bahamas and the Maldives. During the last ice age, the western United States was covered by large lakes, sustained partly by higher levels of precipitation. Increased rainfall was driven by the atmospheric circulation associated with the presence of large North American ice sheets, yet Pleistocene lakes generally reached their highstands not at glacial maximum but during deglaciation. Prior modeling studies, however, showed nearly monotonic drying since the last glacial maximum. Here I show that iTraCE, a new transient climate simulation of the last deglaciation, reproduces a robust peak in winter rainfall over the Great Basin near 16 ka. The simulated peak is driven by a transient strengthening and southward shift of the midlatitude jet. While meltwater forcing is an important driver of changes to the North Pacific Jet, changing orbital conditions and rising atmospheric CO2 also shift the jet south and contribute to wetter conditions over the western US during deglaciation. The cyclic growth and decay of continental ice sheets can be reconstructed from the history of global sea level. Sea level is relatively well constrained for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 26,500 to 19,000 y ago, 26.5 to 19 ka) and the ensuing deglaciation. However, sea-level estimates for the period of ice-sheet growth before the LGM vary by > 60 m, an uncertainty comparable to the sea-level equivalent of the contemporary Antarctic Ice Sheet. Here, we constrain sea level prior to the LGM by reconstructing the flooding history of the shallow Bering Strait since 46 ka. Using a geochemical proxy of Pacific nutrient input to the Arctic Ocean, we find that the Bering Strait was flooded from the beginning of our records at 46 ka until 35.7+3.3 -2.4 ka. To match this flooding history, our sea-level model requires an ice history in which over 50% of the LGM's global peak ice volume grew after 46 ka. This finding implies that global ice volume and climate were not linearly coupled during the last ice age, with implications for the controls on each. This paper presents a new complete field mapping of glacial landscapes, landforms and sediments in the Faroe Islands, supplemented by observations from bathymetric maps of the Faroe Shelf. In addition, previous investigations of Quaternary and especially the Weichselian glaciation of the archipelago are reviewed. New cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages indicate that the last extensive glaciation of the Faroe Islands occurred during the Late Weichselian, most likely during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; c. 26.5-19.0 cal. ka BP), although a Younger Dryas (c. 12.9-11.7 cal. ka BP) age cannot be entirely excluded. Geomorphological mapping provides a background for reconstructing the extent and type of the glaciation of the Faroe Islands. The reconstructed Weichselian glaciation appears to have had the character of an extensive valley glaciation, with several marine glacier termini. The present glaciation of southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, represents a modern analogue of the reconstructed Weichselian glaciation in the Faroe Islands. The lack of raised coastal features in the Faroe Islands, also at protected sites, suggests that postglacial isostatic uplift was smaller than post-LGM eustatic sea level rise. Numerical glacier reconstructions carried out for different extents of the last extensive Faroese glaciation suggest that such limited postglacial isostatic crustal uplift requires that the Faroe Shelf was not extensively glaciated during the Late Weichselian, but it doubtless was so during at least one of the previous Quaternary glaciations. O'Dea et al. (2022) (Pleistocene sea level changes and crocodile population histories on the isthmus of panama: a comment on Avila-Cervantes et al. (2020). Evolution , 76(11), 2778–2783. https://doi.org/10.1111/evo.14610) question our hypothesis that sea-level changes during the past glaciation played a role in restricting gene flow between Pacific and Caribbean Crocodylus acutus in Panama. They argue that an error in sea-level high-stand reconstruction during the last interglacial period (118–130 ka) does not support our hypothesis. Although they are correct in our high-stand reconstruction error, overlooked the point in that we were presenting a model of restricted gene flow across the Panamanian Isthmus during low sea levels. We review the assumptions of gene demographic methods, emphasizing that we were focusing on times of genetic divergence. We expand here why gene flow between these coastal populations could have been restricted during the last glacial maximum (19–26.5 ka) and the 50,000 years preceding it when sea levels were lower than today. O'Dea et al. suggest local climates may have played larger roles than sea levels. We demonstrate that paleoclimate estimates for the past 3.3 Ma in Panama are within the bounds of extant C. acutus. The importance of Ice Age Sea-level dynamics on Neotropical species was likely profound and should be incorporated into evolutionary studies of these taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a detailed 1:50,000-scale glacial geomorphological map covering ∼450 km² of the Wicklow Mountains, eastern Ireland. The region was glaciated at the Last Glacial Maximum, but little is known about the timing and pattern of deglaciation during the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition or the extent of glacier regrowth during the Younger Dryas. The absence of detailed glacial geomorphological mapping has been a barrier to understanding these outstanding questions before now. Mapping of the area was compiled during field campaigns supported by the assessment of remotely-sensed imagery. Ice-marginal moraines are the most prevalent landform mapped and these have been classified into three groups based on differences in morphology. Other evidence for glaciation includes glacially-transported boulders, ice-moulded bedrock, meltwater channels, terraces, talus and summit blockfields. The map forms an essential basis for future work that will investigate glacial landsystems, deglaciation patterns and timing, and the style and extent of Younger Dryas glaciation. The magnitude of tropical cooling during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ∼19–26.5 ka) remains controversial, with sea‐surface temperatures cooling by several degrees less than most temperatures reconstructed at high elevations. To explain this discrepancy, past studies proposed a steeper (increased) lapse rate—the temperature decrease with elevation—during the LGM relative to today. For instance, LGM temperatures in East Africa reconstructed from branched GDGTs from multiple elevations support an ∼0.9°C/km increase in the lapse rate during the LGM relative to present day. Lapse rates are a critical part of the Earth's climate sensitivity and atmospheric energy transfer, and it is vital to know whether and by how much the tropical lapse rate steepened during the LGM. Here, we simulate LGM glacier extents in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda with and without a change in lapse rate using a range of temperature and precipitation estimates. We find that the lapse rate must have been steeper than present for glaciers to reach their LGM positions using available sea‐level temperature and precipitation estimates for East Africa. Plain Language Summary: Glaciers are sensitive to changes in temperature and precipitation, and during the last ice age (∼20,000 years ago), glaciers in the tropics grew in cold (5°C–9°C) and dry conditions while sea surface temperatures changed relatively little (∼1°C–3°C). Perhaps the temperature estimates are telling different stories, or perhaps they are both correct and the rate of cooling with elevation (lapse rate) was steeper (increased) during the drier conditions of the ice age. Here, we use a glacier model and a range of temperature, precipitation, and lapse rate estimates to grow glaciers to moraines (glacial deposits) that mark their ice age extent at 20,000 years ago. Results indicate that glaciers can reach the moraines using the modest sea surface temperature change and a steeper lapse rate, which is supported by available biogeochemical analysis in this area or a large change in temperature and no lapse rate change, which is not supported by sea surface temperature estimates. Climate alterations in the tropics have global implications, and understanding how the lapse rate can change with time and location is vital for informing climate change models. The phase relationships of sea surface temperature (SST) changes between the North Pacific and North Atlantic during deglacial millennial‐scale climate events have been of great interest. However, uncertainties remain partly due to the sparsity of deglacial SST records in the North Pacific. This study presents a new high‐resolution TEX86L ${\mathrm{T}\mathrm{E}\mathrm{X}}_{86}^{L}$‐SST record spanning the entire last deglaciation from core LV63‐41‐2 retrieved from the Northwestern Pacific off the Kamchatka Peninsula, which allows us to explore regional SST change patterns and associated driving mechanisms by compiling previously published SST data in the subarctic Pacific. The subarctic Pacific SST changes during the Bølling‐Allerød and Younger Dryas show in‐phase relationships in response to the North Atlantic SST variations, suggesting a dominant control of atmospheric teleconnections between both oceans. During Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) when the North Atlantic exhibited significant cooling, the subarctic Pacific SST developments are complex, showing gradual warming from the Last Glacial Maximum to HS1 in the Northwestern Pacific and cooling at the onset of HS1 in the Northeastern Pacific. We suggest that the inconsistent phase responses resulted from the combined effects of multiple processes, which involve an enhanced poleward advection of warm subtropical waters, cold meltwater inputs from the retreating Cordilleran Ice Sheet into the Northeastern Pacific, and a persistent La Niña‐like state in the tropical Pacific. Reconstructing mid-latitude glacier variations is a prerequisite for unveiling the interhemispheric climate linkages and atmospheric-ocean forcings that triggered those changes during the last glacial cycle. Nonetheless, the timing, magnitude, and structure of glacier fluctuations in the southern mid-latitudes remain incomplete. Here, we present a new 10Be chronology of the Universidad Glacier in the Andes of central Chile (34° S, 70° W; ∼2500 m a.s.l.) based on 21 cosmogenic-exposure ages of boulders on discrete moraine ridges defining former ice margins. Our findings include the mapping and dating of three moraines, UNI I, UNI II, and UNI III, located ∼20 km, 15 km, and 10 km down-valley from the present-day glacier front, respectively. The 10Be exposure ages of the UNI I moraine range from 135.9 ± 7.1 to 51.4 ± 2.7 ka (n = 3). The UNI II moraine gave a mean age of 18.0 ± 0.9 (n = 15) and the UNI III moraine yielded a mean age of 13.9 ± 0.8 ka (n = 3). The UNI I moraine implies the largest ice extent during a pre-Last Glacial Maximum (pre-LGM) period, including the penultimate glaciation. The UNI II is a moraine complex that represents cold and humid conditions in central Chile at the end of the LGM, which we attribute to the northward-shift of the Southern Westerly Winds (SWW). The UNI III moraine represents a return to glacial conditions interrupting the Termination, evidencing both a double-step deglacial trend observed through the southern middle and high latitudes at the end of the last ice age. Atmospheric warming and circulation reorganization at the end of the last ice age represent the most important climate change of the last 100,000 years and provide an opportunity to uncover how the southern subtropics cryosphere responded to strong changes in the global climate system. Extensive mapping and chronologic records on cryogenic landforms to better understand the association and interactions between glaciers and viscous creep of ice-rich permafrost landforms (rock glaciers) are widely missing in the region. In this paper, we reconstruct the geomorphic imprint of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the Termination I in the high Andes of the Río Limarí Basin (30–31°S) in the subtropical semiarid Andes of Chile. 74 new 10Be surface exposure dating ages constrain the timing of glaciation, deglaciation, and glacial to periglacial transition. Glacial advances occurred first by 41.2 ± 0.6 – 35.0 ± 0.5 ka during Marine Isotope Stage 3, but probably earlier also; then, a second advance occurred during the global LGM between 24.2 ± 0.4 and 18.6 ± 0.2 ka. Deglaciation by 17.6 ± 0.2 ka left extensive hummocky moraines on the main valleys. Characteristic patterns of furrows and ridges typical of rock glaciers and solifluction superimposed on the LGM hummocky moraine indicate ice-rich permafrost in glacial deposits likely between 15.5 ± 0.3 and 13.6 ± 0.3 ka. We propose that moraines deposited by LGM debris-covered glaciers served as a niche for strong seasonal frost and permafrost creep, which substantially modified the original landforms. Our results contribute to a better understanding of major transformations in an ice-rich high mountain area of the southern hemisphere where the interplay of temperature and precipitation changes drove glacial to periglacial transitions. We present downcore records of redox-sensitive authigenic uranium (U) and manganese (Mn) concentrations based on five marine sediment cores spanning a meridional transect encompassing the Subantarctic and Antarctic zones in the southwestern Indian Ocean covering the last glacial cycle. These records signal lower bottom water oxygenation during glacial climate intervals and generally higher oxygenation during warm periods, consistent with climate-related changes in deep-ocean remineralized carbon storage. Regional changes in the export of siliceous phytoplankton to the deep sea may have entailed a secondary influence on oxygen levels at the water–sediment interface, especially in the Subantarctic Zone. The rapid reoxygenation during the deglaciation is in line with increased ventilation and enhanced upwelling after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which in combination conspired to transfer previously sequestered remineralized carbon to the surface ocean and the atmosphere, contributing to propel the Earth's climate out of the last ice age. Motivation: Historical changes in sea level caused shifting coastlines that affected the distribution and evolution of marine and terrestrial biota. At the onset of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) 26 ka, sea levels were >130 m lower than at present, resulting in seaward‐shifted coastlines and shallow shelf seas, with emerging land bridges leading to the isolation of marine biota and the connection of land‐bridge islands to the continents. At the end of the last ice age, sea levels started to rise at unprecedented rates, leading to coastal retreat, drowning of land bridges and contraction of island areas. Although a growing number of studies take historical coastline dynamics into consideration, they are mostly based on past global sea‐level stands and present‐day water depths and neglect the influence of global geophysical changes on historical coastline positions. Here, we present a novel geophysically corrected global historical coastline position raster for the period from 26 ka to the present. This coastline raster allows, for the first time, calculation of global and regional coastline retreat rates and land loss rates. Additionally, we produced, per time step, 53 shelf sea rasters to present shelf sea positions and to calculate the shelf sea expansion rates. These metrics are essential to assess the role of isolation and connectivity in shaping marine and insular biodiversity patterns and evolutionary signatures within species and species assemblages. Main types of variables contained: The coastline age raster contains cells with ages in thousands of years before present (bp), representing the time since the coastline was positioned in the raster cells, for the period between 26 ka and the present. A total of 53 shelf sea rasters (sea levels <140 m) are presented, showing the extent of land (1), shelf sea (0) and deep sea (NULL) per time step of 0.5 kyr from 26 ka to the present. Spatial location and grain: The coastline age raster and shelf sea rasters have a global representation. The spatial resolution is scaled to 120 arcsec (0.333° × 0.333°), implying cells of c. 3,704 m around the equator, 3,207 m around the tropics (±30°) and 1,853 m in the temperate zone (±60°). Time period and temporal resolution: The coastline age raster shows the age of coastline positions since the onset of the LGM 26 ka, with time steps of 0.5 kyr. The 53 shelf sea rasters show, for each time step of 0.5 kyr, the position of the shelf seas (seas shallower than 140 m) and the extent of land. Simple Summary: Gobies form a group of small fish that are extremely adaptable to their environment. However, genomic resources for Gobiidae species are scarce. In this study, high-throughput sequencing technology was used to generate the whole genome data for the shimofuri goby (Tridentiger bifasciatus). In addition to providing basic genomic information, the mitochondrial whole genome, microsatellite markers, and single-copy homologous genes are also explored. The PSMC model is used to provide the historical population dynamics of the shimofuri goby. The results of this study provide a reference for the assembly of a complete genome map and biological research of the shimofuri goby. The shimofuri goby (Tridentiger bifasciatus) is a small and highly adaptable goby, distributed along the coasts of China, the Sea of Japan, and the west coastal and estuarine areas of the Northwest Pacific. Next-generation sequencing was used to generate genome-wide survey data to provide essential characterization of the shimofuri goby genome and for the further mining of genomic information. The genome size of the shimofuri goby was estimated to be approximately 887.60 Mb through K-mer analysis, with a heterozygosity ratio and repeat sequence ratio of 0.47% and 32.60%, respectively. The assembled genome was used to identify microsatellite motifs (Simple Sequence Repeats, SSRs), extract single-copy homologous genes and assemble the mitochondrial genome. A total of 288,730 SSRs were identified. The most frequent SSRs were dinucleotide repeats (with a frequency of 61.15%), followed by trinucleotide (29.87%), tetranucleotide (6.19%), pentanucleotide (1.13%), and hexanucleotide repeats (1.66%). The results of the phylogenetic analysis based on single-copy homologous genes showed that the shimofuri goby and Rhinogobius similis can be clustered into one branch. The shimofuri goby was originally thought to be the same as the chameleon goby (Tridentiger trigonocephalus) due to their close morphological resemblance. However, a complete mitochondrial genome was assembled and the results of the phylogenetic analysis support the inclusion of the shimofuri goby as a separate species. PSMC analysis indicated that the shimofuri goby experienced a bottleneck event during the Pleistocene Glacial Epoch, in which its population size decreased massively, and then it began to recover gradually after the Last Glacial Maximum. This study provides a reference for the further assembly of the complete genome map of the shimofuri goby, and is a valuable genomic resource for the study of its evolutionary biology. The interoceanic exchange of water masses is modulated by flow through key oceanic choke points in the Drake Passage, the Indonesian Seas, south of Africa, and south of Tasmania. Here, we use the neodymium isotope signature (εNd) of cold-water coral skeletons from intermediate depths (1460‒1689 m) to trace circulation changes south of Tasmania during the last glacial period. The key feature of our dataset is a long-term trend towards radiogenic εNd values of ~−4.6 during the Last Glacial Maximum and Heinrich Stadial 1, which are clearly distinct from contemporaneous Southern Ocean εNd of ~−7. When combined with previously published radiocarbon data from the same corals, our results indicate that a unique radiogenic and young water mass was present during this time. This scenario can be explained by a more vigorous Pacific overturning circulation that supported a deeper outflow of Pacific waters, including North Pacific Intermediate Water, through the Tasman Sea. Using cold-water corals, this work identifies a deep outflow of Pacific waters via the Tasman Sea during the last ice age, thus highlighting the role of this area for the interoceanic exchange of water masses on climatic time scales. A recent palaeontological excavation in Muierilor Cave, southern Carpathians (Romania), has recovered one of the largest populations of Late Pleistocene wolves (Canis lupus Linnaeus, 1758; MNI = 25) documented in Eurasian cave deposits. Many individual nests with wolf bones, including fully articulated skeletons, were found in a remote passage of the cave suggesting a communal behavior similar to that of modern conspecifics. Radiocarbon dates indicate constant use of the cave by these canids throughout the Marine Isotopic Stages 3 (MIS 3; 59‒29 cal ka BP). This deposit affords an opportunity to study the extraordinary resilience and adaptability of C. lupus following the extinction of other large carnivores at the onset of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Using taphonomic, stable isotope and radiocarbon data, we make a case that these canids preyed/scavenged upon the cave bears (Ursus spelaeus Rosenmüller, 1794; MNI = 82) that used the same cave for hibernation, along with other Ice Age megafauna such as cave lions (Panthera spelaea Goldfuss, 1810; MNI = 4) and cave hyenas (Crocuta spelaea Goldfuss, 1823; MNI = 3), which were also found in the same bone assemblage. • Muierilor hosts one of the largest MIS 3 wolf population from a karst setting. • We combine taphonomic, stable isotope and radiometric data to infer palaeoecology. • The demise of hyenas and cave lions opened for wolves' new niches to exploit. • Post-36‒34 cal ka BP, the cave bear population drastically diminished in the area. • Focusing on undisturbed taphonomic contexts lead for more accurate information. Determining what caused the global Last Glaciation and last glacial termination, despite opposing orbital summer insolation signatures between the polar hemispheres, remains a puzzle of paleoclimatology. This problem can be addressed by comparing chronologies of glaciation from different latitudes and different climatic regimes in both hemispheres. Here, we present a 10Be surface‐exposure chronology of glacial landforms constructed during and since the local Last Glaciation in the continental environment of Central Asia in the high Mongolian Altai (49°N, 88°E). Four belts of lateral moraines document maximal phases of the former Khoton glacier at 35,440 ± 980 years ago, 23,430 ± 850 years ago, 20,780 ± 610 years ago, and 19,520 ± 550 years ago. Our chronology indicates that deglaciation from these maximal positions began as early as 18,810 ± 510 years ago, was well underway by 17,680 ± 510 years ago, and was nearly completed by 16,040 ± 490 years ago. Overall, our chronology shows that glaciation in western Mongolia overlapped with the global Last Glacial Maximum and that extensive recession from glacial‐to‐interglacial limits took place early in the last glacial termination during Heinrich Stadial 1. Khoton Nuur deglaciation led the demise of large Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and increases in radiative forcing agents by several millennia. We suggest that this rapid switch in the mode of glaciation implies the involvement of an additional climatic factor that could have produced locally rapid warming and deglaciation ∼18,800–16,000 years ago. Mountain glacier length records afford valuable insights into past climate conditions because mountain glaciers are highly sensitive to the effects of atmospheric temperature changes. Here, we use glacial geology and surface‐exposure dating to chart the ice‐age history of a mountain glacier system located in the Mongolian Altai of Central Asia. Results from the Altai show that the ancient glacier achieved ice‐age maxima at the same time as glaciers in midlatitude Southern Alps of New Zealand on the opposite side of the world. Likewise, rapid and extensive glacier recession took place in both locations between ∼18,000 and 16,000 years ago—signaling an early and rapid termination of ice age conditions in these two bipolar midlatitude locations. The rapid climate warming that drove glacier retreat in western Mongolia led to the demise of the huge Northern Hemisphere ice sheets by several millennia and even outpaced the rise of atmospheric CO2. Molecular-based analysis has become a fundamental tool to understand the role of Quaternary glacial episodes. In the Magellan Province in southern South America, ice covering during the last glacial maximum (20 ka) radically altered the landscape/seascape, speciation rates and distribution of species. For the notothenioid fishes of the genus Harpagifer, in the area are described two nominal species. Nevertheless, this genus recently colonized South America from Antarctica, providing a short time for speciation processes. Combining DNA sequences and genotyping-by-sequencing SNPs, we evaluated the role of Quaternary glaciations over the patterns of genetic structure in Harpagifer across its distribution in the Magellan Province. DNA sequences showed low phylogeographic structure, with shared and dominant haplotypes between nominal species, suggesting a single evolutionary unit. SNPs identified contrastingly two groups in Patagonia and a third well-differentiated group in the Falkland/Malvinas Islands with limited and asymmetric gene flow. Linking the information of different markers allowed us to infer the relevance of postglacial colonization mediated by the general oceanographic circulation patterns. Contrasting rough- and fine-scale genetic patterns highlights the relevance of combined methodologies for species delimitation, which, depending on the question to be addressed, allows discrimination among phylogeographic structure, discarding incipient speciation, and contemporary spatial differentiation processes. The Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2) simulates a high equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS > 5°C) and a Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that is substantially colder than proxy temperatures. In this study, we examine the role of cloud parameterizations in simulating the LGM cooling in CESM2. Through substituting different versions of cloud schemes in the atmosphere model, we attribute the excessive LGM cooling to the new CESM2 schemes of cloud microphysics and ice nucleation. Further exploration suggests that removing an inappropriate limiter on cloud ice number (NoNimax) and decreasing the time‐step size (substepping) in cloud microphysics largely eliminate the excessive LGM cooling. NoNimax produces a more physically consistent treatment of mixed‐phase clouds, which leads to an increase in cloud ice content and a weaker shortwave cloud feedback over mid‐to‐high latitudes and the Southern Hemisphere subtropics. Microphysical substepping further weakens the shortwave cloud feedback. Based on NoNimax and microphysical substepping, we have developed a paleoclimate‐calibrated CESM2 (PaleoCalibr), which simulates well the observed twentieth century warming and spatial characteristics of key cloud and climate variables. PaleoCalibr has a lower ECS (∼4°C) and a 20% weaker aerosol‐cloud interaction than CESM2. PaleoCalibr represents a physically more consistent treatment of cloud microphysics than CESM2 and is a valuable tool in climate change studies, especially when a large climate forcing is involved. Our study highlights the unique value of paleoclimate constraints in informing the cloud parameterizations and ultimately the future climate projection. Mineral dust is an important component of the Earth system due to its role in oceanic nutrient supply, cloud formation and its radiative properties. Changes in transport pathways and fluxes of mineral dust have attracted increased attention using radiogenic isotope analysis for detailed investigation of changing dust sources through time. However, multi‐isotope studies provide complex datasets of dust provenance, often without exact quantification of source contributions. Here we use Bayesian mixing models and existing radiogenic isotope data to quantify changes in South Pacific dust provenance for the Holocene and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ∼18–24 ka BP). Testing different model configurations showed grouping small source regions to single continental scale end members prior to modeling can lead to biased results, and so we group model outputs post‐modeling. During the LGM, a higher proportion (mean 53%) of dust entering the South Pacific was South American in origin, compared to a Holocene mean of 31%. In contrast, Australian dust contributions were lower during the LGM (mean 38%) than Holocene (mean 55%), with significant spatial gradients for both time slices. In the subpolar South Pacific, the high representation of South American dust during the LGM (up to ∼75%) coincides with larger dust particles; together indicating that far‐traveled dust transport was facilitated by long atmospheric residence times and an accelerated westerly wind circulation during this time. Our study shows how Bayesian mixing models provide valuable constraints for dust source contributions, an approach which may help in the calibration of atmospheric models, using complex isotopic datasets. This article describes how the Canary Islands were affected by the last glaciation approximately 21,000 years ago. During this period, Europe and North America experienced the Earth's lowest temperatures. Although no archaeological remains of such ancient settlers have been found in the Canary Islands, they have been found in the Iberian Peninsula and Eurasia. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that during the last glaciation, there was a significant decrease in sea level, resulting in the formation of abrasion platforms that remained emerged during this period. These platforms have influenced the current configuration of the islands' relief. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), there were several main features in Europe and Africa. In Europe, the global average temperature decreased by around 5°C, and there were two ice sheets in the northern hemisphere. The sea level was 120 meters lower than it is today, and the plant and animal communities were different from the current ones. In Africa, the Sahara expanded, and the vegetation was mainly desert-like. During this time, the Canary Islands had a different topography due to the decrease in sea level. The article presents a reconstruction of the island landscape of the Canary Islands 21,000 years ago, during the last glacial period. Using submarine topography and geological evidence, it is determined that five of the islands (La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura) had between 238 and 1392 km2 of emerged insular platform at that time. The average increase in emerged surface area on islands with extensive platforms was 62%, and overall, it was nearly 45% for all the islands combined. Additionally, a geological evidence is mentioned in Lanzarote, where a volcanic tube was formed during the sea level drop. Alluvial deposits are also observed in the ravines of the islands, indicating significant incision due to the sea level drop during the glaciations. The article discusses the differences in the development of insular platforms in the Canary Islands. Three groups of islands are mentioned according to their degree of erosive evolution, with the older islands having wider platforms. However, Tenerife is an exception since, despite being old, it does not have a wide platform due to its lack of stability over time. It is suggested that the current platforms are inherited from glacial periods and that the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro may not have been affected by the major Quaternary glaciations. Additionally, the sediments found on the insular platforms are discussed. The article addresses changes in the coastal relief of the Canary Islands due to landslides and rockfalls, as well as alluvial deposits and the influence of sea level. We studied 63 woolly rhinoceros skulls from the northeast of Russia (northwestern Chukotka, northeastern Yakutia) housed in the collection of the "Ice Age" Museum-Theatre, Moscow. Both sexual dimorphism and size/shape variability of woolly rhinoceros skulls are explored using univariate and multivariate statistics for the first time. Peculiarities of the variability, which are probably related to gender, are expressed in (1) different sets of skull variables the variability of which does not depend on "general size" variations and (2) differences in skull allometry in males and females. The structure of morphological variability is discussed. Statistically significant morphological heterogeneity is detected within the male and female samples. This is shown to be the consequence of the presence of two size groups that are not related to individual age. Based on published radiocarbon dates, it is hypothesized that there was a decrease in skull size in the woolly rhinoceros is at the end of megainterstadial (MIS) 3 to the early Last Glacial Maximum MIS 2 in northeastern Asia. Background. Species-specific information on distribution and demographic patterns provides important implications for conservation and fisheries management. However, such information is often lacking for morphologically-similar species, which may lead to biases in the assessments of these species and even decrease effort towards sustainable management. Here, we aimed to uncover the distribution range, population structure and demographic history for four exploited Trichiurus cutlassfishes using genetics. These cutlassfishes contribute substantial global fisheries catch, with a high proportion of catch harvested from the NW Pacific. Methods. We chose the widely available mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA (16S) as the genetic marker for cutlassfishes. We compiled the 16S sequence data from both the GenBank and a survey of trawler catch samples along the NW Pacific coasts 22-39°N. Genealogical relationships within each species was visualized with haplotype networks and potential population differentiations were further evaluated with AMOVA. Demographic histories were estimated using neutrality test, mismatch analysis, and the Bayesian skyline plot. The reconstructed phylogenetic trees were used to delimit and estimate the divergence time of species and included populations. Results. In each of two cosmopolitan species, T. lepturus and T. nanhaiensis, we observed distinct populations along the coasts of warm oceans; such population differentiation might result from historical geographic barriers in the Pleistocene. In the NW Pacific, four Trichiurus species vary in their distribution habitats, which reflect differential ecological niches among these species. The small-sized T. brevis are primarily found in nearshore habitats; the warm-affiliated T. nanhaiensis are present along the path of the Kuroshio Current; the cold-affiliated T. japonicus spatially diverged from the widely-distributed T. lepturus, with the latter mainly occupy in warmer regions. Despite these differences, a single well-mixing fish stock, thus one management unit, was identified in each of the four species, presumably due to expansion of their population sizes predated the Last Glacial Maximum and a lack of distribution barrier. The most dominant T. japonicus, which have at least one magnitude higher effective population size than the others, show a unique abrupt size expansion event at 75 to 50-kilo years ago when the low sea level occurred during the ice age. Main conclusions. The demographic history revealed by our genetic analyses advances understanding of the current distribution and population structure for these congeneric species. Moreover, the uncovered population structure provides insight into the assessment and management of these species. Delicate impressions in lacustrine strata of the lower Permian (lower Cisuralian) Usclas Formation record ephemeral freezing in equatorial Pangea. These sediments accumulated in the paleoequatorial and intramontane Lodève Basin (southern Massif Central, France) during peak icehouse conditions of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age. Experimental replication of these features supports the interpretation that they are ice-crystal molds. Evidence for films of ice in marginal-lacustrine sediment at such low latitudes and inferred low to moderate altitudes (1-2 km) calls for a reevaluation of climate conditions in eastern equatorial Pangea. Ephemeral freezing implies either cold tropical temperatures (~5 °C cooler than the Last Glacial Maximum) and/or lapse rates that exceeded those of the Last Glacial Maximum. Extreme continentality of the Lodève Basin would have amplified seasonality, albeit the climatic forcing(s) necessary to have promoted cold temperatures in equatorial Pangea remain enigmatic. Variations of Caspian Sea water budget in the epoch of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ~21 thousand years ago) relative to the preindustrial conditions (~1850 CE) are considered using data of climatic modeling under PMIP4-CMIP6 projects. The variations of evaporation from the Caspian Sea surface and the volumes of river flow required to maintain the equilibrium state of the lake under various climate conditions and under various lake levels were also evaluated with the use of a regional configuration of the eddy-resolvingoceanic model INMIO-CICE. The boundary conditions in the oceanic model were derived from experiments with INMCM climate model reproducing LGM climate and the climate of preindustrial period. According to the data of PMIP4 simulation, both Volga runoff and evaporation from the Caspian Sea surface decreased in LGM epoch compared with the control experiment. The difference between the estimates by different models is rather high: from −5 to −50% for the Volga, and from −2 to −20% for the Caspian Sea. Such results are not enough to make unambiguous conclusions about whether the position of the Caspian in the LGM period was regressive or transgressive; however, deep regression of the Caspian is excluded. Even if the Caspian level is estimated with the use of the results of the model that has demonstrated the maximal decrease in the Volga runoff, the volume of river runoff from the territory of the Caspian basin will be enough to prevent the sea level dropping below –45 m above sea level. A common conception of the deep ocean during ice age episodes is that the upper circulation cell in the Atlantic was shoaled at the Last Glacial Maximum compared to today, and that this configuration facilitated enhanced carbon storage in the deep ocean, contributing to glacial CO2 draw‐down. Here, we test this notion in the far South Atlantic, investigating changes in glacial circulation structure using paired neodymium and benthic carbon isotope measurements from International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1479, at 2,615 m water depth in the Cape Basin. We infer changes in circulation structure across the last glacial cycle by aligning our site with other existing carbon and neodymium isotope records from the Cape Basin, examining vertical isotope gradients, while determining the relative timing of inferred circulation changes at different depths. We find that Site U1479 had the most negative neodymium isotopic composition across the last glacial cycle among the analyzed sites, indicating that this depth was most strongly influenced by North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) in both interglacial and glacial intervals. This observation precludes a hypothesized dramatic shoaling of NADW above ∼2,000 m. Our evidence, however, indicates greater stratification between mid‐depth and abyssal sites throughout the last glacial cycle, conditions that developed in Marine Isotope Stage 5. These conditions still may have contributed to glacial carbon storage in the deep ocean, despite little change in the mid‐depth ocean structure. Ice cores provide detailed records of past climate change. Water stable isotopes are the most commonly used ice core climate proxy, but their quantitative interpretation remains challenging. Here, I argue that the gas age‐ice age difference (Δage) is a powerful proxy for past surface temperature. An analytical framework is derived that directly links past temperature to firn properties that can be reliably reconstructed (Δage, lock‐in depth). The framework is calibrated using both present‐day spatial patterns and last glacial maximum temperatures reconstructed via borehole thermometry. The usefulness of the method is demonstrated using three case studies from Greenland and Antarctic ice cores. The calibration suggests that several firn densification models, with the possible exception of the Herron‐Langway model, have insufficient sensitivity to accumulation rates. This low sensitivity, in combination with large amplitude temperature forcing, can explain historical difficulties of densification models in simulating ice age firn thickness in East Antarctica. Plain Language Summary: It is important for scientists to understand past natural climate change. Ice cores drilled in the polar regions contain ancient ice up to 800,000 years old and can be used to reconstruct past climate. Ice from the polar regions contains air bubbles that are trapped at the bottom of the thick (50–120 m) perennial snow pack called the firn. The air in these bubbles is younger than the ice that surrounds it, and this age difference is called Δage. This paper develops a new method to estimate past temperatures of the ice sheet surface using our knowledge of changes in ice core Δage. The method is very simple and fast and agrees very well with independent temperature reconstructions where available. Northern Asia (here, the Russian Federation east of the Urals) played a key role in the spread of anatomically modern humans (AMH) across the Eurasian continent during the Upper Palaeolithic (UP). This time interval witnessed the climatically harshest and most variable part of the last glacial epoch when AMH spread to all continents, with the exception of ice-covered Antarctica, thus raising questions about how humans and environments interacted. Our review of available proxy records shows that the study region was largely dominated by productive steppe and tundra plant communities, which promoted a diverse small- to mega-scale fauna throughout the UP. While this rich fauna was an ideal food resource for AMH populations, its possible influence on the growth of woody plants through grazing is less well resolved. Another non-climatic factor that may have impacted on the spread of woody taxa are human activities (e.g. setting fires to facilitate hunting). Evidence that small populations of woody taxa were distributed in climatically favourable habitats comes from plant macroremains from sediment sequences and archaeological sites and from aDNA data. Contrary to the long-standing view of a generally colder-than-present last glacial climate, these proxy records reveal evidence that summers were warmer than today by several degrees Celsius, providing additional advantages for human activities. Another benefit for large herbivores, and thus human subsistence, were the generally low winter precipitation levels (similar to those of the modern steppe regions of Mongolia), which sustained year-round grazing grounds. These factors apparently outweighed the harsh colder-than-present winter conditions and promoted habitation of AMH in Northern Asia even during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ca. 30‒18 cal kyr BP. While our understanding of qualitative climate trends, mainly based on fossil pollen records, has substantially improved, quantification of climate parameters is still a challenging task. Capsella is a model plant genus of the Brassicaceae closely related to Arabidopsis. To disentangle its biogeographical history and intrageneric phylogenetic relationships, 282 individuals of all five currently recognized Capsella species were genotyped using a restriction digest‐based next‐generation sequencing method. Our analysis retrieved two main lineages within Capsella that split c. one million years ago, with western C. grandiflora and C. rubella forming a sister lineage to the eastern lineage consisting of C. orientalis. The split was attributed to continuous latitudinal displacements of the Eurasian steppe belt to the south during Early Pleistocene glacial cycles. During the interglacial cycles of the Late Pleistocene, hybridization of the two lineages took place in the southwestern East European Plain, leading to the allotetraploid C. bursa‐pastoris. Extant genetic variation within C. orientalis postdated any extensive glacial events. Ecological niche modeling showed that suitable habitat for C. orientalis existed during the Last Glacial Maximum around the north coast of the Black Sea and in southern Kazakhstan. Such a scenario is also supported by population genomic data that uncovered the highest genetic diversity in the south Kazakhstan cluster, suggesting that C. orientalis originated in continental Asia and migrated north‐ and possibly eastwards after the last ice age. Post‐glacial hybridization events between C. bursa‐pastoris and C. grandiflora/rubella in the southwestern East European Plain and the Mediterranean gave rise to C. thracica. Introgression of C. grandiflora/rubella into C. bursa‐pastoris resulted in a new Mediterranean cluster within the already existing Eurasian C. bursa‐pastoris cluster. This study shows that the continuous displacement and disruption of the Eurasian steppe belt during the Pleistocene was the driving force in the evolution of Capsella. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The origin and evolution of biodiversity in the Shennongjia and Wushan Mountains, located in central China, are little known. In this study, we used Ourapteryx szechuana, which is widely distributed in China and northern Nepal, to explore whether these mountains acted as glacial refugia during climate oscillations of the Quaternary. In total, 192 samples of O. szechuana were collected throughout much of the distribution range. Phylogenetic analysis, molecular dating, demographic history reconstructions, and MAXENT were used to investigate the evolutionary history and differentiation mechanisms and predict the potential species distributions during four different periods. The phylogenetic tree and the star‐like median‐joining network strongly supported two reciprocally monophyletic and allopatric lineages. Lineage I was restricted to the Shennongjia and Wushan Mountains. The divergence time of O. szechuana from its sister species O. thibetaria was approximately 1.94 Ma. The differentiation processes of the two intraspecific lineages occurred at approximately 0.47 Ma. The demographic history reconstruction and the ecological niche model suggested that Lineage II experienced an expansion after the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum), whereas Lineage I did not experience any expansion. Our results suggested the Naynayxungla glaciation promoted the divergence of the two lineages by restricting them to different refugia. The valleys of the Shennongjia–Wushan Mountains may have kept stable and warm (thus ice‐free) environments during Quaternary glaciations, allowing this region to act as a glacial refugia. Only a few studies of Quaternary glaciation have been conducted in the central Kunlun Mountains, hindering a full understanding of Late Pleistocene and Holocene climatic changes on the Tibetan Plateau. This study presents 30 new 10Be surface exposure ages from five moraine crests, two moraine platforms and two glaciofluvial terraces on the northwestern slopes of the Ulugh Muztagh in the central Kunlun Mountains. The moraine ages indicate that an old glacial advance occurred no later than ∼87.10 ka, an extensive glacial advance at ∼35.61 ka and Holocene advances at ∼7.61 ka, ∼1.65 ka, ∼0.69 ka, and ∼ 0.36 ka. Two glaciofluvial terraces were tentatively determined to have been deposited at ∼24.87 ka and ∼ 17.35 ka, possibly implying the occurrence of limited global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Heinrich Stadial 1 glacial advances. After combining these findings with geomorphic evidence, it was inferred that glacial coverage was more extensive during MIS 3 than the global LGM, indicating that the timing of the LGM in the Ulugh Muztagh was asynchronous with that of the monsoon-dominated Tibetan Plateau. Reference to other palaeoclimatic archives suggested that glacial advances since MIS 3 were most likely driven by a combination of cool to cold temperatures and a relatively humid climate. The limited global LGM advance was attributed to increased aridity. • MIS 5 or older, MIS 3 and four Holocene glacial advances were determined. • LGM moraines were absent, a limited LGM glacial advance was geomorphically inferred. • Glacial advances since MIS 3 were driven by a cool to cold and humid climate. • The limited LGM advance could be attributed to increased aridity.
