Eriophyoid mites are among the most species‐rich superfamilies (Eriophyoidea) in the Acari, consisting of over 5000 named species. Although they exhibit a geographically uneven worldwide distribution, their regional spatiotemporal evolutionary patterns remain largely unknown. Here, we compiled a data set including 3058 occurrence records assigned into 1203 species in China. We found that eriophyoid mite species richness is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest of China, coinciding with the 500‐mm annual precipitation isoline. Using fragments of two mitochondrial genes (COI, 12S rRNA) and two nuclear genes (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA) of 304 eriophyoid mite species, we constructed a regional dated phylogenetic tree in China. Our spatiotemporal analysis revealed that mountains in eastern and southern China had high eriophyoid mite species richness and phylogenetic clustering, possessing both ancient and young mite lineages. Species distribution modelling (SDM) results showed that the predicted suitable area of eriophyoid mites slightly expanded from the last inter‐glacial period to the last glacial maximum period. In comparison with the current SDM, a significantly larger distribution range was observed in future scenarios. These findings suggest that mountains in eastern and southern China acted as not only cradles—recent rapid speciation, but also museums—centre of gradual accumulation and preservation and provide insights into monitoring and conserving eriophyoid mites. The interpretation of high-resolution remote-sensed data (i.e., LiDAR-derived DTMs, aerial photos and satellite images), compared with ground-penetrating radar surveys, historical cartography, geomorphological surveys and stratigraphic data, allowed us to map a large system of dunes near the Grado-Marano Lagoon (NE Italy) and reconstruct its evolution. Remote sensing investigations allowed us to recognize, map and interpret the sandy reliefs as a field of continental aeolian landforms extending for over 15 km2 and consisting of parabolic dunes elongated in the WSW direction. Radar soundings, together with the description of stratigraphic sections and cores, documented the internal clinostratification of the dunes, supporting their aeolian origin. Radiocarbon dating documents that the dunes formed 22 ka ago, at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, and probably evolved until the first part of the Late Glacial, when vegetation was scarce. The landforms were fed by the sands blown from a paleochannel of Isonzo River flowing eastward of the dune's field and blown by Bora. This is a very strong katabatic wind, still characterizing the area, but that was likely much stronger during last glaciation, when it was probably sustained by a stronger wind pattern in Central Europe. The Yarlung Tsangpo River on the southern Tibetan Plateau flows between alternating broad shallow valley and deep gorge sections. Many damming events caused by glaciers or glacial moraines have occurred in the gorges during the last glacial period, which play an important role in shaping river landscapes. In this study, we used geomorphological, sedimentological and chronological techniques to analyze the dammed paleolake in the Shan'nan-Gyaca stretch of the middle reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Four sedimentary sections were studied, delineating three major lithofacies associations. We also summarized previous research. Our results suggest that the paleolake was formed before ∼16 ka BP and drained at ∼10 ka BP, developing at least two deltaic-lacustrine sedimentary cycles. The paleolake's highest water surface was ∼3620 m above sea level, with a minimum area and volume of ∼140 km2 and ∼86 km3, respectively. The dam located at the entrance of the Gyaca Gorge may have been formed by glacial moraines during the Last Glacial Maximum; the subsequent outburst event had probably triggered a megaflood downstream. We review the major phylogeographic patterns in Aotearoa New Zealand's terrestrial flora and fauna that have been associated with the Ōtira Glaciation of the Pleistocene, the end of which coincides with the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). We focus on (1) the complexity of biogeographic histories of New Zealand species, with LGM-driven phenomena overlaying the impacts of mountain-building and other drivers of phylogeographic structure; (2) the locations of glacial refugia and sets of taxa which may have shared refugia; and (3) the role of glaciation in driving diversification. We end with a brief focus on the next directions, including what can we learn about New Zealand's glacial history by expanding our phylogeographic toolbox to include genomic methods and hypothesis-driven inference methods. The prevailing paradigm about the Quaternary ecological and evolutionary history of Central European ecosystems is that they were repeatedly impoverished by regional extinctions of most species during the glacial periods, followed by massive recolonizations from southern and eastern refugia during interglacial periods. Recent literature partially contradicts this view and provides evidence to re‐evaluate this Postglacial Recolonization Hypothesis and develop an alternative one. We examined the long‐term history of the flora of the Carpathian (Pannonian) Basin by synthesising recent advances in ecological, phylogeographical, palaeoecological and palaeoclimatological research, and analysing the cold tolerance of the native flora of a test area (Hungary, the central part of the Carpathian Basin). We found that (1) many species have likely occurred there continuously since before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM); (2) most of the present‐day native flora (1404 species, about 80%) can occur in climates as cold as or colder than the LGM (mean annual temperature ≤+3.5°C); and (3) grasslands and forests can be species‐rich under an LGM‐like cold climate. These arguments support an alternative hypothesis, which we call the Flora Continuity Hypothesis. It states that long‐term continuity of much of the flora in the Carpathian Basin is more plausible than regional extinctions during the LGM followed by massive postglacial recolonizations. The long‐term continuity of the region's flora may have fundamental implications not only for understanding local biogeography and ecology (e.g. the temporal scale of processes), but also for conservation strategies focusing on protecting ancient species‐rich ecosystems and local gene pools. The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) plays a key role in regulating tropical hydroclimate and global water cycle through changes in its convection strength, latitudinal position, and width. The long-term variability of the ITCZ, along with the corresponding driving mechanisms, however, remains obscure, mainly because it is difficult to separate different ITCZ variables in paleoclimate proxy records. Here, we report a speleothem oxygen isotope (d18O) record from southwestern Sulawesi, Indonesia, and compile it with other speleothem records from the Maritime Continent. Using the spatial gradient of speleothem d18O along a transect across the ITCZ, we constrain ITCZ variabilities over the Maritime Continent during the past 30,000 y. We find that ITCZ convection strength overall intensified from the last glacial period to the Holocene, following changes in climate boundary conditions. The mean position of the regional ITCZ has moved latitudinally no more than 3° in the past 30,000 y, consistent with the deduction from the atmospheric energy framework. However, different from modern observations and model simulations for future warming, the ITCZ appeared narrower during both the late Holocene and most part of the last glacial period, and its expansion occurred during Heinrich stadials and the early-to-mid Holocene. We also find that during the last glacial and deglacial period, prominent millennial-scale ITCZ changes were closely tied to the variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), whereas during the Holocene, they were predominantly modulated by the long-term variability of the Walker circulation. The expansion of oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) within the ocean's interior is anticipated to be a major consequence of anthropogenic climate change, but past changes in ODZs are poorly defined. Recent mapping efforts have revealed plumes of the redox‐active metal cobalt within ODZs, driving a basin‐scale correlation between high cobalt and low O2. Here, we investigate the cobalt flux to Equatorial Pacific sediments along the Line Islands Ridge as a novel record of basin‐scale fluctuations in ODZ extent. After accounting for remobilization by diagenesis, we document a ∼40% increase in cobalt accumulation over the last glacial period, with a more pronounced peak during the Last Glacial Maximum, indicative of larger ODZs compared to the Holocene. Our results link ODZ expansion with colder climates and lend support to model‐based assertions that ongoing deoxygenation may reflect a transient response to warming. During the Last Glacial Period, the climate shift to cold conditions associated with changes in atmospheric circulation and vegetation cover resulted in the development of large aeolian systems in Europe. On a regional scale, many factors may have influenced dust dynamics, such as the latitudinal difference between the various aeolian systems and the variability of the sources of wind-transported particles. Therefore, the assumption that the timing of aeolian deposition is strictly synchronous in Europe does not seem to be the most plausible hypothesis and needs to be evaluated. To test this assumption, the chronology of loess deposition in different European regions was investigated by studying 93 luminescence-dated loess–palaeosol sequences with their data recalculated and compiled in a single comma separated values (*.csv) file: the ChronoLoess database. Our study shows that the two major aeolian systems, the Northern European Loess Belt (NELB) on the one hand and the systems associated with the rivers draining the Alpine Ice Sheet on the other hand, developed asynchronously. The significant deposition started at about 32 kyr b2k for the NELB vs. 42 kyr b2k for the perialpine loess and peaked about 2 millennia later for the former (21.8 vs. 23.9 kyr b2k, respectively). This shift resulted mainly from the time lag between the maxima of the Alpine and Fennoscandian ice sheets, which acted as the primary sources of fine-grained particles through glacial abrasion. The major geomorphic changes that resulted from the development and decay of the Fennoscandian and British–Irish ice sheets also played an important role. Particularly, ice sheet coalescence during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) diverted meltwater fluxes through the Channel River and provided vast amounts of glacial particles available for deflation in the western NELB. The period during which the maximum mass accumulation rate was reached for each loess–palaeosol sequence is relatively homogeneous in the NELB and ranges from 30 to 19 kyr b2k, whereas it is more scattered in the perialpine systems (>60 to 14 kyr b2k). This probably resulted from a combination of factors, including the asynchrony of maximum valley glacier advances and local geomorphic factors. Proxy reconstructions and model simulations of precipitation during Earth's glacial periods suggest that the locations and mechanisms of atmospheric moisture transport have changed considerably during Earth's past. We investigate the hydroclimate of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) using simulations with the Community Earth System Model, with a focus on the extratropics and the influence of atmospheric rivers (ARs), a key driver of modern‐day moisture transport globally. Mean and extreme precipitation increase significantly over southwestern Patagonia, Iberia, and southwestern North America—mid‐latitude regions affected by ARs in the modern climate—despite overall decreases elsewhere. In each, the associated moisture transport changes are different, with increased transport and AR activity mainly occurring in the North Atlantic. The overall LGM response is dominated by the response to ice sheets, with other forcings causing additional cooling and drying over the extratropics and a strong decrease of moisture transport over the subpolar North Atlantic. Plain Language Summary: During the last ice age, when glaciers reached their maximum extent, atmospheric CO2 was lower and Earth's orbit was different. All of these influences caused dramatic changes in precipitation patterns around the planet. Using climate model simulations, we find that the majority of the changes to atmospheric moisture transport and precipitation patterns result from the presence of the ice sheets alone, with lower CO2 and insolation differences enhancing the ice sheet‐induced patterns. These changes mainly comprise decreases in moisture transport and lower precipitation, with three notable exceptions in Patagonia, Iberia, and southwestern North America. Ice coverage not only affects the climate and landscape of geographical regions but has impacted species composition, the fragmentation and isolation of populations, and the colonisation routes of species post-glaciation. Major advancements in generating genetic data and applying sophisticated analyses to accurately model the demographic and colonisation history of animal and plant species has allowed evolutionary biologists novel insights. Meanwhile, physical geographers have made major advancements in reconstructing glacial history. However, the information flow between the geographic and evolutionary fields on this topic remains limited; consequently, evolutionary studies on contemporary biodiversity and species colonisation tend to be vague about the role of glacial history, while evolutionary and biodiversity information is rarely leveraged when discussing historical glaciation. In this review, we bring together current knowledge on the changing patterns of ice coverage in the British Isles from the maximum extent of the British-Irish ice sheet (BIIS) ca. 27 ka through to the end of large-scale ice coverage at the start of the Holocene period ca. 11.5 ka. We do so to then highlight how glaciation affected species composition during this time period and the subsequent colonisation of temperate flora and fauna and the patterns of genetic variation seen in them. Simple Summary: Previous paleoclimatic modelling studies on the European whip snake, Hierophis viridiflavus, hardly explain its genetic structure. Through the combination of phylogeographic and paleoclimatic modelling analyses, we reconstructed the biogeographic history of the species. Phylogeographic analyses recovered two major lineages that had diversified in different ways in the late Pleistocene. Paleoclimatic models unveiled the species range dynamics since the late Pleistocene, showing major range contractions into multiple climatic refugia in Southern Europe during glacial and interglacial events, as well as more recent northwards expansions. This study contributes to our knowledge of H. viridiflavus' historical biogeography and sheds more light on the evolutionary processes that took place in the Mediterranean Basin hotspot. Phylogeographic and paleoclimatic modelling studies have been combined to infer the role of Pleistocene climatic oscillations as drivers of the genetic structure and distribution of Mediterranean taxa. For the European whip snake, Hierophis viridiflavus, previous studies based on paleoclimatic modelling have depicted a low reliability in the pattern of past climatic suitability across the central Mediterranean Basin, which barely fits the species' genetic structure. In this study, we combined phylogeographic and paleoclimatic modelling tools to improve our understanding of the biogeographic history of H. viridiflavus, particularly extending the sampling and phylogeographic inferences to previously under-sampled regions. Phylogeographic analyses recovered two major clades that diverged at the beginning of the Pleistocene and had diversified in different ways by the late Pleistocene: the east clade (composed of three subclades) and the west clade (with no further structure). Paleoclimatic models highlighted the temperate character of H. viridiflavus, indicating range contractions during both the last inter-glacial and last glacial maximum periods. Range expansions from southern-located climatic refugia likely occurred in the Bølling–Allerød and Middle Holocene periods, which are supported by signals of demographic growth in the west clade and South–East–North subclade. Overall, this work improves our understanding of the historical biogeography of H. viridiflavus, providing further insights into the evolutionary processes that occurred in the Mediterranean Basin hotspot. The Hengduan Mountains region is a biodiversity hotspot known for its topologically complex, deep valleys and high mountains. While landscape and glacial refugia have been evoked to explain patterns of interspecies divergence, the accumulation of intra‐species (i.e., population level) genetic divergence across the mountain‐valley landscape in this region has received less attention. We used genome‐wide restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) to reveal signatures of Pleistocene glaciation in populations of Thitarodes shambalaensis (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae), the host moth of parasitic Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Hypocreales: Ophiocordycipitaceae) or "caterpillar fungus" endemic to the glacier of eastern Mt. Gongga. We used moraine history along the glacier valleys to model the distribution and environmental barriers to gene flow across populations of T. shambalaensis. We found that moth populations separated by less than 10 km exhibited valley‐based population genetic clustering and isolation‐by‐distance (IBD), while gene flow among populations was best explained by models using information about their distributions at the local last glacial maximum (LGML, 58 kya), not their contemporary distribution. Maximum likelihood lineage history among populations, and among subpopulations as little as 500 m apart, recapitulated glaciation history across the landscape. We also found signals of isolated population expansion following the retreat of LGML glaciers. These results reveal the fine‐scale, long‐term historical influence of landscape and glaciation on the genetic structuring of populations of an endangered and economically important insect species. Similar mechanisms, given enough time and continued isolation, could explain the contribution of glacier refugia to the generation of species diversity among the Hengduan Mountains. The study of fire history and driving mechanisms at long time scales can provide a theoretical background for future fire management in forested regions. The alpine lake sediments from Daye Lake in the Qinling Mountains, east‐central China, were used to explore the influence of climate, vegetation and human activity on fires since the LGM, based on charcoals and black carbon. During the last glacial period, fire activity was mostly controlled by regional aridity under a weak East Asian summer monsoon, while human‐induced fires were commonly dominated in the late Holocene. Fire activity was found to be linked to biomass through temperature variability. The biofuel dominated by conifers induced high intensity fires in the last glacial, and herbs contributed more to the high fire frequency over the mid‐late Holocene. With predicted future rising temperatures, increased vegetation cover and extreme climate events may increase the fire risk in the region. Understanding past fire history and its driving mechanisms are essential to mitigate the impact of fires. Here, we present fire records from alpine lake sediments in the Qinling Mountains since the LGM. Results indicate that climatological drought under a prevailing weak East Asian summer monsoon increased fire activity during 21.6–11.7 cal ka BP, while human‐induced fires became more common in the late Holocene due to land use, for example, the forest clearing for agriculture and the warfare. And high temperature increases fuel loads, resulting in more fires. Moreover, vegetation types with varying biofuel supply also influence fire activity. We suggest that fire risk may increase in the region with future rising temperature. Our results have implications for understanding fire history and management in other transitional vegetation zones globally. Damage to speleothems is a common phenomenon in mid-latitude caves, and multiple causes have been proposed. Here we report on one of such type of damage, namely stalagmites that are broken and partially sheared near their base but are still in upright position. Such stalagmites occur in the Obir Caves (Austria) associated with cryogenic cave carbonates, demonstrating the former presence of cave ice. 230Th dating suggests damage to the speleothems during the Last Glacial Maximum. Numerical modelling combined with laboratory measurements demonstrates that internal deformation within a cave ice body cannot fracture stalagmites, even on a steep slope. Instead, temperature changes lead to thermoelastic stresses within an ice body that reach values equaling to and exceeding the tensile strength of even large stalagmites. Differences in thermal expansion coefficients cause a sharp vertical jump in stress between the stalagmite and the surrounding ice body, and the ice lifts the stalagmite as it expands with increasing temperature. This study refutes the previously accepted model that flow of ice breaks stalagmites, and suggests a link between glacial climate variability and corresponding cooling and warming cycles in the subsurface that weaken and eventually fracture stalagmites due to the opposing thermoelastic properties of calcite and ice. Hydrothermal activity on mid‐ocean ridges plays an important role in shaping marine chemistry, yet the variability of hydrothermal venting and its forcing mechanism remain elusive. Here, we analyzed a sediment core obtained near the tectonic‐controlled Tianxiu vent field, Carlsberg Ridge, to reconstruct the hydrothermal venting history. The core documented two significant hydrothermal events (H1 and H2) in the past 30 ka. H1 occurred at 24.1–24.5 ka during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), while H2 occurred at 10.5–11.6 ka during the deglacial period. Compared to H2, H1 was relatively weak, and it occurred concurrently with a tectonic event. We suggest that H2 was caused by the increased melt production associated with the decompression melting of the upper mantle during sea‐level fall, which is consistent with previously published records, whereas H1 was likely triggered by an intense tectonic event associated with depressurization during the LGM, which was previously unrecognized. Previous studies have shown that there is a relationship between the variability of hydrothermal activity and sea‐level changes. Increased melt production during glacial periods has been invoked to explain the enhanced hydrothermal activities during glacial terminations. However, little attention has been paid to the relationship between hydrothermal activity and tectonic events during the glacial–interglacial cycle. Based on the analysis of a sediment core collected near the tectonic‐controlled Tianxiu vent field, Carlsberg Ridge, we reconstructed the hydrothermal venting history and found that enhanced hydrothermal activities not only occurred at 10.5–11.6 ka during the last glacial termination but also occurred concurrently with an intense tectonic event at 24.1–24.5 ka during the Last Glacial Maximum. We infer that this earlier hydrothermal event was induced by the improved permeability of the oceanic crust due to depressurization during the glacial sea‐level fall. This is the first time that the hydrothermal venting history of a tectonic‐controlled hydrothermal system in the Indian Ocean is characterized, and the coupling between hydrothermal and tectonic events associated with sea‐level changes is revealed. Loess and paleosols are valuable terrestrial archives of past climate change in arid and semiarid Asia, yet most of the available records are located in central Asia and China, with only few records from western Asia. Here we report on a loess-paleosol sequence retrieved from the Gorgan Plain Southeast of the Caspian Sea that extends back to ca. 27,000 years ago. By combining palynological and micromorphological data with granulometry and magnetic properties in different horizons, we infer past changes in soil formation and vegetation composition, and the related climatic conditions. In order to set up a more reliable chronological framework, we applied luminescence and radiocarbon dating. Our results suggest a dry and cold glacial period characterized by steppe vegetation and loess deposition until about 24,000 years ago. Climate conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum (19–23,000 years ago) were relatively wet followed by a drying trend towards the end of the deglaciation. Our record suggests a relatively wet early Holocene but remains inconclusive for the late Holocene due to concurrent anthropogenic impact. We argue that changes in wintertime temperature and precipitation have been decisive in shaping the vegetation and soil formation in our study area during the Holocene, whereas changes in the position of the westerlies together with sea-level fluctuations of the Caspian Sea controlled the regional climate during the last glacial period. This study comprehensively investigates the impacts on the mean state of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) climate, particularly atmospheric circulation over the Northern Hemisphere associated with the different Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase 4 (PMIP4) ice sheets, ICE-6G_C, GLAC-1D, and PMIP3, using the coupled atmosphere–ocean–vegetation model HadCM3B-M2.1aD. The simulation with PMIP3 ice sheets is colder than either of the two PMIP4 ice sheets mainly because of the larger area of land ice impacting surface albedo. However, changes in the circulation impact sea ice cover resulting in the GLAC-1D simulation being almost as cold. Although the PMIP4 ice sheets also induce different responses in the atmospheric circulation, some common features are identified in all simulations, including strengthening and lateral expansion of the winter upper-level North Atlantic jet with a large southwest-northeast tilt and summertime North Pacific jet, a southward shift of the wintertime Icelandic Low and Azores High and the summertime Pacific High. Compared to terrestrial-ocean reconstructions, all the PMIP4 ice sheet experiments overestimate the LGM cooling and wet conditions. The simulation with the ICE-6G_C ice sheet provides the closest reproduction of LGM climate, while the simulation with the PMIP3 ice sheet shows the coldest LGM climate state. Our study shows that in order to "benchmark" the ability of climate models to realistically simulate the LGM climate, we need to have reliable boundary conditions to ensure that any model biases are caused by model limitations rather than uncertainty about the LGM boundary conditions. Recent glaciations in northwestern Russia completely covered the Barents Sea during four glacial advances. At the peaks of those glacial advances, there were no nearshore macrofauna. Consequently, colonization by species that now inhabit present-day nearshore waters must have occurred since the habitat became available and hospitable, less than 15 thousand years ago (ka). We analyzed microsatellite data from navaga, Eleginus nawaga (Gadiformes: Gadidae), collected from Khaipudyrskaya Bay in the southeastern Barents Sea with coalescent-based models to estimate the times and effective population sizes that existed before and after major historical demographic changes. Colonization of E. nawaga, which could only follow establishment of a lower trophic-level food web, provides an indicator of that timing. The results of the analyses were consistent with two major demographic events. After an initial founding event before ~ 144 ka, the population grew to an effective size of about 2700 individuals. Subsequently, as the ice receded after the Last Glacial Maximum, it probably plateaued at ~ 26,000 about 3000 years ago. Clues of climate change on the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period (40 ka) are important for revealing the mechanism of desertification of middle-latitude deserts in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Studies are still rare for the understanding of the specific relationship of climate changes between the Alashan Plateau and the global. Based on a systematic and comparative analysis of the existing research in China and the international academic community, this paper reviews the environmental evolution history of the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period from the records of paleo-environment and geomorphological characteristics in different deserts of the plateau (e.g., Badanjilin, Tenggeli, and Wulanbuhe). From about 40 ka to the end of the last glacial maximum, the climate on the plateau was wetter than it is today, and to the end of the Pleistocene, the climate was generally dry and the aeolian activities were enhanced. However, the climate was arid during the whole last glacial period in the Wulanbuhe Desert, evidently different from the overall pattern of the plateau. The Tenggeli Desert was characterized by an arid climate in the early Holocene. The most controversial events for the Alashan Plateau are the drought events in the middle Holocene in the Badanjilin Desert. The role and impact of the westerlies and the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) systems on the climate change of the desert and even the whole plateau is a vexed question that brings different views in different periods. There is still a lack of definite evidence representing the events of global environmental change that occurred on the plateau during the discussed period. The distinctive morphology of dune mountains and the distribution of sand dunes are mutually indicative of the direction and energy of wind systems on the plateau. It is suggested that appropriate wind energy is the significant key to the desertification in these middle-latitude deserts on the plateau. From a global-scale review of climate change, the desertification of the modern-scale sandy desert landscapes on the Alashan Plateau is generally related to the global glacial period and the cold and dry climate during the past 40 ka. The evolution and current distribution of species on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have been significantly impacted by historical occurrences, including the uplift of the plateau and the Quaternary climate upheaval. As a remnant species, the plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) is a great model for researching historical events. In this study, 302 samples from 42 sample sites were utilized to analyze the impact of historical events on the evolution and distribution pattern of plateau pikas. The genetic diversity, patterns of differentiation, and historical dynamics of the plateau pika were investigated using molecular markers that included four mitochondrial genes (COI, D-loop, Cytb, and 12S rRNA) and three nuclear genes (GHR, IRBP, and RAG1). The results showed that: (1) The genetic diversity of the plateau pika was high in the Tibetan Plateau (Hd = 0.9997, π = 0.01205), and the plateau pika evolved into five lineages that occupied different geographical areas, with lineage 1 (Group 1) in the south of the Yarlung Zangbo River, lineage 2 (Group 2) in the hinterland of the plateau, lineage 3 (Group 3) in the northeastern part of the plateau, lineage 4 (Group 4) in the Hengduan Mountains, and lineage 5 (Group 5) in the eastern part of the plateau. (2) The gene flow among the five lineages was low, and the differentiation level was high (Nm < 0.25; Fst > 0.25), indicating that the geographical barriers between the five lineages, such as the Yarlung Zangbo River, the Qaidam-Ghuong-Guide Basin, and the Lancang River, effectively promoted the population differentiation of the plateau pika. (3) The plateau pika first spread from the Hengduan Mountains to the entire Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and then conducted small-scale migration and dispersal in several refuges across the plateau in response to climate changes during the glacial and interglacial periods. (4) Except for Group 1 and Group 4, all the other populations exhibited a rapid expansion between 0.06 and 0.01 Mya, but the expansion was considerably delayed or halted by the effects of climate change during the last glacial maximum (0.02 Mya). Overall, the plateau pika on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau exhibits high genetic diversity, and topographic obstacles, including mountains, valleys, and basins, created by the uplift of the plateau and climatic changes since the Quaternary period have played an important role in the differentiation and historical dynamics of the plateau pika population. The Pechora Sea is optimally located for studying the coalescence of a glacial and periglacial continental shelf zone in the high Arctic. Here, we present data acquired during cruises of the RV Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov in 2018–2021, revealing the distribution of submarine glacial landforms in the central part of the Pechora shelf area. Based on moraines and the distribution of glacial lineations, the extent of the ice sheet during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is proposed. The crests of the moraine ridges and the slopes of their sides express a variation in morphology, and the ridges combine into irregular complexes. The moraines are primarily composed of coarse cobble-sized material with an addition of coarse sand and other sedimentary fractions. The mapped glacial landforms clearly indicate that an ice sheet extended over the area, while the Pechora basin, at the same time, was comprised of lowland characterized by a cryogenic subaerial landscape. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are an important driver of surface mass balance over today's Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Using paleoclimate simulations with the Community Earth System Model, we find ARs also had a key influence on the extensive ice sheets of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). ARs provide up to 53% of total precipitation along the margins of the eastern Laurentide ice sheet and up to 22%–27% of precipitation along the margins of the Patagonian, western Cordilleran, and western Fennoscandian ice sheets. Despite overall cold conditions at the LGM, surface temperatures during AR events are often above freezing, resulting in more rain than snow along ice sheet margins and conditions that promote surface melt. The results suggest ARs may have had an important role in ice sheet growth and melt during previous glacial periods and may have accelerated ice sheet retreat following the LGM. Plain Language Summary: During the Last Glacial Maximum (∼21,000 years ago), ice sheets covered much of northern North America, Fennoscandia, and the Patagonian Andes. Using climate model simulations, we find that much of the precipitation that fell on the margins of these ice sheets came from transient, narrow corridors of atmospheric moisture known as atmospheric rivers. This paper presents a new complete field mapping of glacial landscapes, landforms and sediments in the Faroe Islands, supplemented by observations from bathymetric maps of the Faroe Shelf. In addition, previous investigations of Quaternary and especially the Weichselian glaciation of the archipelago are reviewed. New cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages indicate that the last extensive glaciation of the Faroe Islands occurred during the Late Weichselian, most likely during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; c. 26.5-19.0 cal. ka BP), although a Younger Dryas (c. 12.9-11.7 cal. ka BP) age cannot be entirely excluded. Geomorphological mapping provides a background for reconstructing the extent and type of the glaciation of the Faroe Islands. The reconstructed Weichselian glaciation appears to have had the character of an extensive valley glaciation, with several marine glacier termini. The present glaciation of southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, represents a modern analogue of the reconstructed Weichselian glaciation in the Faroe Islands. The lack of raised coastal features in the Faroe Islands, also at protected sites, suggests that postglacial isostatic uplift was smaller than post-LGM eustatic sea level rise. Numerical glacier reconstructions carried out for different extents of the last extensive Faroese glaciation suggest that such limited postglacial isostatic crustal uplift requires that the Faroe Shelf was not extensively glaciated during the Late Weichselian, but it doubtless was so during at least one of the previous Quaternary glaciations. The natural distribution of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) has been disturbed by human activities, owing mainly to its value as timber; thus, its position in the vegetation zone of Japan is not clear. Therefore, it is important to determine the history of C. japonica forests before human influence. We reviewed the transitions in distribution and abundance of C. japonica in the Japanese Archipelago since the last interglacial period by using published pollen data. During the last interglacial, temperate deciduous broadleaf forests developed on northeastern Honshu Island, whereas on southwestern Honshu Island C. japonica populations increased, accompanied by warm‐temperate evergreen broadleaf trees. During the first half of the last glacial period, C. japonica forests developed throughout the Japanese Archipelago except on Hokkaido. Thereafter, 60,000–30,000 years ago, C. japonica covered the area around Lake Biwa and the Izu Peninsula. During the Last Glacial Maximum, C. japonica was most abundant on the Izu Peninsula, and small refugial populations were located along the coast of the Sea of Japan from southwestern to northeastern Honshu, and along the Pacific coast of Shikoku Island. During the Middle Holocene, C. japonica populations increased rapidly in southwestern Honshu. Two thousand years ago, before the intensification of human activities, C. japonica was widespread in warm‐ to cool‐temperate zones on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu, the Izu Peninsula, the Pacific coast of Shikoku Island, and Yakushima Island. O'Dea et al. (2022) (Pleistocene sea level changes and crocodile population histories on the isthmus of panama: a comment on Avila-Cervantes et al. (2020). Evolution , 76(11), 2778–2783. https://doi.org/10.1111/evo.14610) question our hypothesis that sea-level changes during the past glaciation played a role in restricting gene flow between Pacific and Caribbean Crocodylus acutus in Panama. They argue that an error in sea-level high-stand reconstruction during the last interglacial period (118–130 ka) does not support our hypothesis. Although they are correct in our high-stand reconstruction error, overlooked the point in that we were presenting a model of restricted gene flow across the Panamanian Isthmus during low sea levels. We review the assumptions of gene demographic methods, emphasizing that we were focusing on times of genetic divergence. We expand here why gene flow between these coastal populations could have been restricted during the last glacial maximum (19–26.5 ka) and the 50,000 years preceding it when sea levels were lower than today. O'Dea et al. suggest local climates may have played larger roles than sea levels. We demonstrate that paleoclimate estimates for the past 3.3 Ma in Panama are within the bounds of extant C. acutus. The timing of the first appearance of animals is of crucial importance for understanding the evolution of life on Earth. Although the fossil record places the earliest metazoans at 572–602 Ma, molecular clock studies suggest a far earlier origination, as far back as ~850 Ma. The difference in these dates would place the rise of animal life into a time period punctuated by multiple colossal, potentially global, glacial events. Although the two schools of thought debate the limitations of each other's methods, little time has been dedicated to how animal life might have survived if it did arise before or during these global glacial periods. The history of recent polar biota shows that organisms have found ways of persisting on and around the ice of the Antarctic continent throughout the Last Glacial Maximum (33–14 Ka), with some endemic species present before the breakup of Gondwana (180–23 Ma). Here we discuss the survival strategies and habitats of modern polar marine organisms in environments analogous to those that could have existed during Neoproterozoic glaciations. We discuss how, despite the apparent harshness of many ice covered, sub‐zero, Antarctic marine habitats, animal life thrives on, in and under the ice. Ice dominated systems and processes make some local environments more habitable through water circulation, oxygenation, terrigenous nutrient input and novel habitats. We consider how the physical conditions of Neoproterozoic glaciations would likely have dramatically impacted conditions for potential life in the shallows and erased any possible fossil evidence from the continental shelves. The recent glacial cycle has driven the evolution of Antarctica's unique fauna by acting as a "diversity pump," and the same could be true for the late Proterozoic and the evolution of animal life on Earth, and the existence of life elsewhere in the universe on icy worlds or moons. Aim: Many species experienced population turnover and local extinction during the Late Pleistocene. In the case of megafauna, it remains challenging to disentangle climate change and the activities of Palaeolithic hunter‐gatherers as the main cause. In contrast, the impact of humans on rodent populations is likely to be negligible. This study investigated which climatic and/or environmental factors affect the population dynamics of the common vole. This temperate rodent is widespread across Europe and was one of the most abundant small mammal species throughout the Late Pleistocene. Location: Europe. Taxon: Common vole (Microtus arvalis). Methods: We generated a dataset comprised of 4.2 kb long fragment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 148 ancient and 51 modern specimens sampled from multiple localities across Europe and covering the last 60 thousand years (ka). We used Bayesian inference to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships and to estimate the age of the specimens that were not directly dated. Results: We estimated the time to the most recent common ancestor of all last glacial and extant common vole lineages to be 90 ka ago and the divergence of the main mtDNA lineages present in extant populations to between 55 and 40 ka ago, which is earlier than most previous estimates. We detected several lineage turnovers in Europe during the period of high climate variability at the end of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3; 57–29 ka ago) in addition to those found previously around the Pleistocene/Holocene transition. In contrast, data from the Western Carpathians suggest continuity throughout the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) even at high latitudes. Main Conclusions: The main factor affecting the common vole populations during the last glacial period was the decrease in open habitat during the interstadials, whereas climate deterioration during the LGM had little impact on population dynamics. The aerial stratotype of the Chibit Glaciation in a stratigraphic chart of Quaternary deposits of the Altai–Sayan Mountains, which corresponds to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) or the fourth step of the Upper Neopleistocene of the Russian Stratigraphic Chart, is characterized. The reference geological sections of diamictons of the Chibit Horizon are described and positioned. The geomorphological scheme with contours of the LGM Chibit and Maashei glaciers, which is composed of materials of remote sounding, field geomorphological observations, and geological data, is presented. The boundaries of the ice-dammed Baratal Lake are shown for a flooding level of 1700 m, which corresponds to the upper terraces in the northeastern margin of the Kurai Depression. The boulder gravels, which are deposited as a result of the outburst of Baratal Lake, are found in an old valley of the Chuya River. They compose a terrace body 5–7 m high cut into the Chibit moraine. Summary: Vast population movements induced by recurrent climatic cycles have shaped the genetic structure of plant species. During glacial periods species were confined to low‐latitude refugia from which they recolonized higher latitudes as the climate improved. This multipronged recolonization led to many lineages that later met and formed large contact zones.We utilize genomic data from 5000 Picea abies trees to test for the presence of natural selection during recolonization and establishment of a contact zone in Scandinavia.Scandinavian P. abies is today made up of a southern genetic cluster originating from the Baltics, and a northern one originating from Northern Russia. The contact zone delineating them closely matches the limit between two major climatic regions. We show that natural selection contributed to its establishment and maintenance. First, an isolation‐with‐migration model with genome‐wide linked selection fits the data better than a purely neutral one. Second, many loci show signatures of selection or are associated with environmental variables. These loci, regrouped in clusters on chromosomes, are often related to phenology.Altogether, our results illustrate how climatic cycles, recolonization and selection can establish strong local adaptation along contact zones and affect the genetic architecture of adaptive traits. The Euro-Siberian steppe flora consists of warm- and cold-adapted species, which may have responded differently to Pleistocene glacials and interglacials. Genotyping-by-sequencing individuals from across the distribution range of the pheasant's eye (Adonis vernalis), we aimed to gain insight into steppe florogenesis based on the species' evolutionary history. Although the primary area of origin of the species group comprising A. vernalis, A. villosa and A. volgensis is in Asia, our results indicate that recent populations of A. vernalis are not of Asian origin but evolved in the southern part of Europe during the Pleistocene, with Spanish populations clearly genetically distinct from the Southeastern European populations. We inferred that A. vernalis migrated eastwards from the sub-Mediterranean forest-steppes of Southeastern Europe into the continental forest-steppe zone. Eastern European populations had the highest private allelic richness, indicating long-term large population sizes in this region. As a thermophilic species, A. vernalis seems unlikely to have survived in the cold deserts of the Last Glacial Maximum in Western Siberia, so this region was likely (re)colonized postglacially. Overall, our results reinforce the importance of identifying the area of origin and the corresponding ecological requirements of steppe plants in order to understand the composition of today's steppe flora. Population size changes and gene flow are processes that can have significant impacts on evolution. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of geography to patterns of gene flow and population size changes in a pair of closely related Sphagnum (peatmoss) species: S. recurvum and S. flexuosum. Both species occur in eastern North America, and S. flexuosum also occurs in Europe. Genetic data from restriction‐site‐associated DNA sequencing (RAD‐seq) were used in this study. Analyses of gene flow were accomplished using coalescent simulations of site frequency spectra (SFSs). Signatures of gene flow were confirmed by f4 statistics. For S. flexuosum, genetic diversity of plants in glaciated areas appeared to be lower than that in unglaciated areas, suggesting that glaciation can have an impact on effective population sizes. There is asymmetric gene flow from eastern North America to Europe, suggesting that Europe might have been colonized by plants from eastern North America after the last glacial maximum. The rate of gene flow between S. flexuosum and S. recurvum is lower than that between geographically disjunct S. flexuosum populations. The rate of gene flow between species is higher among sympatric plants of the two species than between currently allopatric S. flexuosum populations. There was also gene flow from S. recurvum to the ancestor S. flexuosum on both continents which occurred through secondary contact. These results illustrate a complex history of interspecific gene flow between S. flexuosum and S. recurvum, which occurred in at least two phases: between ancestral populations after secondary contact and between currently sympatric plants. Premise of research. A recurring North American disjunct distribution of vascular plants exists between western North America (WNA) and the Great Lakes region (GLR) where the isolated and often threatened GLR populations are sometimes considered to be glacial relicts. Using georeferenced specimen databases and inclusion of Canadian species ranges, the historical biogeography of this enigmatic distribution can be examined. Methodology. We (1) generate the WNA-GLR vascular plant taxa list using regional floras, georeferenced localities, and maps; (2) test historical phylogeographic hypotheses by projecting suitable climate niche space to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and concurrently assessing phylogeographic congruence between taxa; and (3) annotate the post-1981 literature that has contributed to the understanding of this distribution. Pivotal results. There are at least 9 genera and 53 species with this distribution. Few studies since 1981 have focused on the biogeography of these taxa, although 52 articles have cited Marquis and Voss (1981). Conservatively, 44 of 53 species' historical niche models reject the hypothesis that the species were able to persist in a midwestern glacial refugium. Taxa have different projected suitable niche space at the LGM, providing support for pseudocongruent biogeographic histories. Conclusions. The updated WNA-GLR taxa list, the preliminary assessment of historical biogeography, and the review of the scientific literature indicate that this distribution has been understudied. Investigations of additional taxa in this system will enable detailed comparative analysis between taxa and prompt discussions of geographic speciation, local adaptations in the GLR, and future persistence in the GLR in the face of climate change. The historical biogeography of the terrestrial mammals in Europe has been widely studied on the basis of fossil records and molecular makers. However, to date, only one model of species' responses to glacial–interglacial cycles during the glacial episodes of the Quaternary, especially during the Last Glacial Maximum, has been proposed: the 'expansion‐contraction model'.The 'expansion‐contraction model' is more appropriate for thermophilous and temperate species than for Arctic species. We hypothesise that the responses of cold‐adapted species to the temperature fluctuations during glacial cycles cannot be explained by this model.In this review, we synthesise and describe, for the first time, the historical biogeography of various cold‐adapted terrestrial mammalian taxa (small mammals, herbivores, and carnivores) in Eurasia during the last glaciation (especially during the Last Glacial Maximum), and identify mechanisms underlying their response to glacier pulsation and severe climate fluctuations.We formulate the paradigm for the biogeography of cold‐adapted mammalian taxa in Europe, and identified three response models to glacial–interglacial cycles: 1) 'extinction and genetic diminution' for Lasiopodomys gregalis, Dicrostonyx spp. and Lemmus lemmus, 2) 'extinction and replacement' for Alopex lagopus, Gulo gulo and Rangifer tarandus, and 3) 'contraction and gene transfer' for Lepus timidus and Martes zibellina.Knowledge of past biogeography is essential for understanding how cold‐adapted taxa are responding to anthropogenic climate warming, and for on‐going biodiversity and habitat conservation in the Anthropocene. During the last glacial period, the tropical hydrological cycle exhibited large variability across orbital and millennial timescales. However, the response of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), its related impact on terrestrial ecosystems, and associated forcing mechanisms remain controversial. Here we present a marine record of pollen‐inferred vegetation changes suggesting that eastern India shifted from woody‐savanna mosaics during Marine Isotopic Stage 3 to grasslands during the Last Glacial Maximum resulting from large‐scale drying. Our data shows that ISM maximum is in phase with obliquity and precession maxima suggesting a dominant role of the Indian Ocean interhemispheric temperature gradient on glacial ISM variability. Persistent and abrupt dryland expansions of varying magnitude suggest rapid‐scale onset of aridity during Heinrich Stadial events and during the Toba eruption. We propose that the amplitude of ISM drought events are initiated by high latitude and volcanic forcings, although modulated by precession. Plain Language Summary: Climatic mechanisms controlling variations in the monsoon rainfalls in India remain unclear even though there is a consensus on the strong vulnerability of this region to the ongoing climate change. Based on the reconstruction of the vegetation in eastern India during the last glacial, our study reveals that very low monsoon rainfall, as indicated by a drastic reduction in trees, occurred when the global ice volume reached its maximum by affecting the global and Indian wind circulations. Conversely, the moistest conditions, as reported by the development of a wooded savannah, are recorded during a period characterized by a specific insolation configuration, which reinforces the temperature contrast over the Indian ocean, and thus the humidity supplied to India. Intense droughts are also documented by the abrupt increases of arid vegetation in response to massive iceberg discharges in the North Atlantic and a major tropical volcanic eruption. We suggest that a low seasonal thermic contrast in the tropical region amplifies the dryness associated with these catastrophic events in India. Pleistocene glacial cycles drastically changed the distributions of taxa endemic to temperate rainforests in the Pacific Northwest, with many experiencing reduced habitat suitability during glacial periods. In this study, we investigate whether glacial cycles promoted intraspecific divergence and whether subsequent range changes led to secondary contact and gene flow. For seven invertebrate species endemic to the PNW, we estimated species distribution models (SDMs) and projected them onto current and historical climate conditions to assess how habitat suitability changed during glacial cycles. Using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data from these species, we assessed population genetic structure and used a machine‐learning approach to compare models with and without gene flow between populations upon secondary contact after the last glacial maximum (LGM). Finally, we estimated divergence times and rates of gene flow between populations. SDMs suggest that there was less suitable habitat in the North Cascades and Northern Rocky Mountains during glacial compared to interglacial periods, resulting in reduced habitat suitability and increased habitat fragmentation during the LGM. Our genomic data identify population structure in all taxa, and support gene flow upon secondary contact in five of the seven taxa. Parameter estimates suggest that population divergences date to the later Pleistocene for most populations. Our results support a role of refugial dynamics in driving intraspecific divergence in the Cascades Range. In these invertebrates, population structure often does not correspond to current biogeographic or environmental barriers. The New Guinea Highlands were among the first areas where agricultural societies developed about 9 kya. Even today, the highest human population densities can be found in the tropical highlands, those are the most important shelters for societies in this seriously malaria-affected equatorial area. In this study, the distribution and altitudinal patterns of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum malaria, as well as the potential generation numbers and the annual season lengths of the extrinsic transmission periods of the parasites were modelled for the Last Glacial Maximum, the Mid-Holocene Period, 1960–1990 and 2061–2080 in the Papua New Guinea Highland provinces. It was found that areas influenced by Plasmodium vivax malaria have always been larger than the endemic regions of Plasmodium falciparum. After the Last Glacial Period, the extension of the malaria-free areas decreased dramatically. It could trigger the development of agriculture in the highlands in the early Holocene due to the increasing population concentration in malaria-free areas. These malaria-free regions could be stable in the rest part of the Holocene, which could explain the high human genetic and cultural diversity of the New Guinea Highlands. Future models predict the disruption of this stability and the notable decrease of the malaria-free areas in the highlands, especially in the case of Plasmodium vivax malaria, but the upward move in the Plasmodium falciparum -endemic regions also seems to be notable. Arid central Asia is a key region in the study of global climate change; however, the characteristics and mechanisms of regional hydroclimate changes during the late Quaternary remain poorly known. Here we present a new hydroclimate record from Lake Ebinur in arid northwestern China based on a comprehensive multiproxy analysis. The results show that Lake Ebinur formed at ~33.5 ka under relatively warm and humid conditions that continued to 26.7 ka. The following Last Glacial Maximum was cold and dry from 26.7 to 18.5 ka, most notably during the interval between 21.3 and 18.5 ka, suggesting a two‐step hydroclimate change. The moisture conditions started to improve at 15 ka and reached their highest level during the Middle Holocene (8.7–4.4 ka). A comparison of our record with other records in the Northern Hemisphere indicated that the moisture changes in central Asia followed similar variability trends to those of the east Asia monsoon region during the last glacial period, suggesting common driving forces, such as the boreal solar insolation and its associated Northern Hemisphere ice‐sheet volume. The Holocene moisture optimum in central Asia was delayed by 2000–3000 years relative to that in east Asia, which demonstrated a large influence of the remnant Northern Hemisphere ice‐sheet forcings on the mid‐latitude Asia atmospheric circulation (e.g. mid‐latitude westerlies and Siberian High) in the Early Holocene. Pronounced changes in the deep Atlantic circulation occurred during glacial stages, which affected the global carbon distribution and the biogeochemical cycles of other elements. Previous studies demonstrated that oceanic mercury is sensitive to the same kind of processes that affect the carbon cycle in glacial-interglacial time scales. We used Hg isotopes to elucidate Hg cycling during the last two glacial-interglacial transitions in the subtropical western South Atlantic. Mass-dependent fractionation (MDF, δ202Hg) and mass-independent fractionation (MIF, Δ199Hg) show significant variations and shift toward higher and lower values during the penultimate and Last Glacial Maximum periods, respectively. δ202Hg variability is in-phase with periods of lower atmospheric CO2 and benthic δ13C, suggesting that MDF is affected by the same mechanisms that led to atmospheric CO2 drawdown during glacial stages. Barhal Valley belongs to the Çoruh Valley System in the Kaçkar Mountains of northeastern Anatolia. This 13 km long valley is located to the south of the main weather divide and to the east of Mt. Kaçkar, with the highest peak of the mountain range being 3932 m. Today, source of an average yearly precipitation of 2000 mm of moisture is the Black Sea, situated approximately 40 km to the north of the study site. Glaciers of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) descended directly from Mt. Kaçkar and reached an altitude of ca. 1850 m a.s.l. (above sea level). In this study, we are exploring whether the position of Barhal Valley to the south of the main weather divide and its east–west orientation have an influence on the existence and expansion of paleoglaciers. Here, we present 32 new cosmogenic 36Cl dates on erratic boulders from the Çoruh Valley System. We reconstructed three geomorphologically well-contained glacier advances in the Barhal Valley, namely at 34.0 ± 2.3 ka, 22.2 ± 2.6 ka, and 18.3 ± 1.7 ka within the time window of the global LGM. Field evidence shows that the glacier of the 18.3 ± 1.7 ka advance disappeared rapidly and that by the latest time, at 15.6 ± 1.8 ka, the upper cirques were ice-free. No evidence for Lateglacial glacier fluctuations was found, and the Neoglacial activity is restricted to the cirques with rock glaciers. A range of 2700 to 3000 m for the Equilibrium Line Altitude (ELA) at the LGM was reported based on modeling of the glacial morphology. We determined that the most likely position of the LGM ELA in the Çoruh Valley System was at 2900 m a.s.l. We suggest an alternative moisture source to the direct transport from the Black Sea for the ice accumulation in the Eastern Black See Mountains. The shift of the Polar Front and of the Siberian High Pressure System to the south during the LGM resulted in the domination of easterly airflow to the Caucasus and Kaçkar Mountains with moisture from expanded lakes in central–western Siberia and from the enlarged Aral- and Caspian Seas. In the piedmont of uplifting mountains, alluvial fan rivers undergo significant aggradation-degradation processes, which are usually attributed to climate change. An ongoing debate is whether this process requests the participation of glaciation. To address this debate, we need the knowledge of the quantitative relationship between the ratio of water to sediment flux (q w / q s) with the aggradation/degradation process. This study examined the aggradation and degradation processes in three alluvial rivers at the piedmont of the Qilian Shan (Shan referes to Mountain) and simulated the river processes by a one-dimensional numerical model based on the transport-limited principle. Along the studied piedmont rivers, field measurements show a magnitude of 120–200 m degradation and aggradation in the Late Pleistocene. Through simulation analysis, we explored how factors like the ratio of water to sediment flux (q w / q s), channel width, and sediment grain size influence river processes and longitudinal profiles, and found distinct morphologies in different processes, where aggradation is characterized by concave-up profiles, while degradation is characterized by convex-down profiles. Additionally, the water flux is inversely proportional to the time required for the river to reach a new equilibrium profile. The simulated degradation amplitude aligns closely with the measured data in the Qilian Shan, indicating that precipitation during the Last Glacial Maximum in the region amounted to approximately ∼32% of the Holocene precipitation. To provide the most comprehensive picture of species phylogeny and phylogeography of European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), we analyzed mtDNA control region (610 bp) of 1469 samples of roe deer from Central and Eastern Europe and included into the analyses additional 1541 mtDNA sequences from GenBank from other regions of the continent. We detected two mtDNA lineages of the species: European and Siberian (an introgression of C. pygargus mtDNA into C. capreolus). The Siberian lineage was most frequent in the eastern part of the continent and declined toward Central Europe. The European lineage contained three clades (Central, Eastern, and Western) composed of several haplogroups, many of which were separated in space. The Western clade appeared to have a discontinuous range from Portugal to Russia. Most of the haplogroups in the Central and the Eastern clades were under expansion during the Weichselian glacial period before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), while the expansion time of the Western clade overlapped with the Eemian interglacial. The high genetic diversity of extant roe deer is the result of their survival during the LGM probably in a large, contiguous range spanning from the Iberian Peninsula to the Caucasus Mts and in two northern refugia. Aim: Range shifts are a key process that determine species distributions and genetic patterns. A previous investigation reported that Juglans cinerea (butternut) has lower genetic diversity at higher latitudes, hypothesized to be the result of range shifts following the last glacial period. However, genetic patterns can also be impacted by modern ecogeographical conditions. Therefore, we re‐investigate the genetic patterns of butternut with additional northern population sampling, hindcasted species distribution models and fossil pollen records to clarify the impact of glaciation on butternut. Location: Eastern North America. Taxon: Juglans cinerea (L., Juglandaceae) (butternut). Methods: Using 11 microsatellites, we examined range‐wide spatial patterns of genetic diversity (allelic richness, heterozygosity, FST) for 1004 previously studied butternut individuals and an additional 757 samples. We constructed hindcast species distribution models and mapped fossil pollen records to evaluate habitat suitability and evidence of species' presence throughout space and time. Results: Contrary to previous work on butternut, we found that genetic diversity increased with distance to range edge, and previously observed latitudinal clines in diversity were likely due to a few outlier populations. Populations in New Brunswick, Canada were genetically distinct from other populations. At the Last Glacial Maximum, pollen records demonstrate butternut likely persisted near the glacial margin, and hindcast species distribution models identified suitable habitat in the southern United States and near Nova Scotia. Main conclusions: Genetic patterns in butternut may be shaped by both glaciation and modern environmental conditions. Pollen records and hindcast species distribution models combined with genetic distinctiveness in New Brunswick suggest that butternut may have persisted in cryptic northern refugia. Global warming is affecting the population dynamics and trophic interactions across a wide range of ecosystems and habitats. Translating these real‐time effects into their long‐term consequences remains a challenge. The rapid and extreme warming period that occurred after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition (7–12 thousand years ago) provides an opportunity to gain insights into the long‐term responses of natural populations to periods with global warming. The effects of this post‐LGM warming period have been assessed in many terrestrial taxa, whereas insights into the impacts of rapid global warming on marine taxa remain limited, especially for megafauna. In order to understand how large‐scale climate fluctuations during the post‐LGM affected baleen whales and their prey, we conducted an extensive, large‐scale analysis of the long‐term effects of the post‐LGM warming on abundance and inter‐ocean connectivity in eight baleen whale and seven prey (fish and invertebrates) species across the Southern and the North Atlantic Ocean; two ocean basins that differ in key oceanographic features. The analysis was based upon 7032 mitochondrial DNA sequences as well as genome‐wide DNA sequence variation in 100 individuals. The estimated temporal changes in genetic diversity during the last 30,000 years indicated that most baleen whale populations underwent post‐LGM expansions in both ocean basins. The increase in baleen whale abundance during the Holocene was associated with simultaneous changes in their prey and climate. Highly correlated, synchronized and exponential increases in abundance in both baleen whales and their prey in the Southern Ocean were indicative of a dramatic increase in ocean productivity. In contrast, the demographic fluctuations observed in baleen whales and their prey in the North Atlantic Ocean were subtle, varying across taxa and time. Perhaps most important was the observation that the ocean‐wide expansions and decreases in abundance that were initiated by the post‐LGM global warming, continued for millennia after global temperatures stabilized, reflecting persistent, long‐lasting impacts of global warming on marine fauna. Several studies have tested the Elevational Rapoport Rule (ERR) in arthropods, especially in the Neotropical mountains. Nonetheless, different approaches should be used for a more nuanced comprehension of ERR patterns and assemblage altitudinal distribution patterns, such as the biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary contexts. This study aims to test the ERR for elevational gradients in Mexican mountains. For this study, dung beetle assemblages of the genus Onthophagus were used as a model organism, and their distribution was studied in several different mountain ranges of the Mexican tropics. Altitudinal distribution of Onthophagus species was analyzed, including ecological traits and biogeographical/phylogenetical contexts as covariables. The increase of altitude was positively correlated to the assemblage altitudinal range. Furthermore, altitudinal range, relative abundance, body size, and mountain's topographic prominence were positively correlated to the mean altitudinal range of Onthophagus species. Nonetheless, different altitudinal relationships were observed, depending on the mountain. The results support the idea that species that inhabit higher altitudes appear to be more environmentally plastic and occur in wider altitudinal ranges than species from lower altitudes, thus supporting the ERR. The present findings stress that biogeographical, ecological, phylogenetical, and historical aspects, besides body size, are essential drivers of the altitudinal distribution of Onthophagus dung beetles. Little information is available about the origin of loess on the Iranian Loess Plateau and along the northern foothills of the Alborz mountain range. Our well-dated multiproxy record from the Chenarli loess-paleosol sequence (LPS) fills this gap and provides a valuable paleoclimate record. Eight loess units are identified , covering the late penultimate glacial period (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6: 135.6 ± 9.5 ka) until the Early Holocene (9.8 ± 0.7 ka). Geochemical results propose a constant local primary loess source with a longer transport distance only for MIS 5b and MIS 5d loess. However, low Si/Ti but high Zr/Ti ratios and increased sand contents of MIS 6 loess are implying stronger winds and derivation of this loess from a different source containing coarser particles. We interpret our data in a regional context and compare periods of loess deposition and pedogenesis in northern Iran with other loess records from Southern Eurasia. This indicates that late Pleistocene pedogenesis recorded at Chenarli agrees with periods of paleosol formation at LPS from northern Iran and Southern Eurasia. A ∼9-m thick loess deposition between ∼62 and 16 ka in unit 2 at Chenarli is consistent with other loess records indicating significant loess accumulation during MIS 3 with a peak during the Last Glacial Maximum in Southern Eurasia. One of the paleosols at Chenarli correlates with the late MIS 4 interstadial, which is well-recorded in southern Eurasian loess deposits. Previous paleo-glacial studies on Kerguelen showed a singular pattern of Holocene glacier evolution on this archipelago in comparison with other southern mid-latitude glacier records. In this study, we aim to test this singularity on a longer timescale, based on 26 new in situ -produced 36Cl ages from pre-Holocene glacio-geomorphic features. Samples from moraine boulders and glacially polished bedrock were extracted at six different sites, located near the Port-aux-Français scientific station (PAF site), on Longue Island, Australia Island, on the Port-Jeanne d'Arc Peninsula (PJDA site), on the Gallieni Peninsula at Baie Larose (BLR site) and the McMurdo Island. The moraine ages indicate that glacier culminations occurred during Marine Isotopic Stage 3 (MIS 3) at 42.2 ± 4.9 ka on the PAF site, and during the global Last Glacial Maximum (gLGM) at 21.5 ± 3.2 ka on the PJDA site and at 21.4 ± 3.7 ka and 19.4 ± 2.6 on Baie Larose site. This is the first time that Late Pleistocene glacier culminations are evidenced on Kerguelen by direct moraine dating, thus allowing comparison with other moraine records from the southern mid-latitudes. While it remains speculative whether or not the MIS 3 glacial maximum at ⁓42.2 ka is in phase with other glaciers at this latitude (due to high age uncertainties), the gLGM glacial maximum is synchronous with that in other southern mid-latitude regions. 36Cl CRE ages of glacially polished bedrock surfaces sampled in different locations of the archipelago vary from ⁓39 ka to ⁓19 ka. We interpret these results as reflecting periods of deglaciation that occurred in between the two glacier culminations and right after the gLGM on Kerguelen. These ages also suggest that some places of the archipelago were free of ice at least since ⁓ 39 ka. The presence of a MIS 3 moraine at PAF site that has not been obliterated by a gLGM advance suggests that the ⁓ 42.2 ka glacier extent was at least as large as gLGM glacial maxima on the archipelago. The glacier culmination during MIS 3 being larger than that during the gLGM on the Kerguelen Archipelago matches observations in other southern mid-latitude regions. Late Pleistocene glacier culminations on Kerguelen may have been in phase with cold temperatures recorded in SST records, which suggest a cooling around Kerguelen. • Glacial iceberg versus deglacial meltwater plume discharge in the Labrador Sea. • Enhanced Irminger Current may have affected ice sheet retreat. • A polynya probably occurred south of Greenland during the Last Glacial Maximum. The study of the history of ice sheet retreat provides important insights into the interaction between ice sheets and oceans, especially under a sustained warming climate. The decay of ice sheets may affect the surrounding ocean environment, and changes in sea surface conditions can, in turn, affect the ice sheet stability. However, interactions between ice sheet dynamics and sea surface characteristics are still not fully understood. Here, we show sedimentary records from the eastern Labrador Sea, proximal to the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) and the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). These records span the last 50 ka, i.e., the last glacial-deglacial-Holocene period. The XRF, biomarker, and planktic/benthic foraminifer data document the collapse of the LIS/iceberg discharge during Heinrich Events (i.e., HE5, HE4, HE2, and HE1) and the occurrence of meltwater plumes from the GrIS and the LIS during the last deglaciation. Such meltwater discharges have caused surface freshening in the Labrador Sea and, consequently, decreased sea surface temperatures and open-water phytoplankton productivity. Enhanced Irminger Current inflow might have caused (sub-)surface warming in the Labrador Sea and triggered the retreat of ice sheets/meltwater discharge. In contrast to relatively low primary production during the glacial period, the Last Glacial Maximum was characterized by increased sea ice algae and phytoplankton production, suggesting the presence of a polynya in front of the southern GrIS. The Greater Khingan and Yanshan mountain ranges in northern China not only constitute a significant physical obstacle to the northward movement of monsoon circulation, but also represent a natural barrier for human migration and cultural interactions between in-migrating Paleolithic populations and those indigenous to East Asia during the Late Pleistocene. We dated two Paleolithic sites, Yangzhuangxishan and Taiziling, located in the southern piedmont of the Yanshan Mountains with artifacts typified by simple core and flake technology associated with foraging populations, to ∼39–29 ka and ∼ 52–47 ka respectively, using the optically stimulated luminescence dating method. Our results indicate that northern China as far south as the Yanshan Mountains was occupied mainly by autochthonous East Asian Paleolithic populations using a core and flake lithic technology, although during this period Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) modern humans and Mousterian populations dispersed into East Asia. By synthesizing and integrating the ages of Northeast Asian Paleolithic sequences during the last glacial period (ca. 70–10 ka), we analyzed spatio-temporal variations in Late Pleistocene human populations during relatively cold stadial events (MIS 4 & 2) and warmer interstadials (e.g., MIS 3), revealing an "ebb and flow" pattern for migrations of Western IUP/Mousterian populations and indigenous core and flake technology populations in East Asia corresponding to the advance and retreat of the East Asian monsoon regime. The subsequent extremely cold climate phase engendered a major population shift during the Last Glacial Maximum (ca. 26.5–19 ka) which drove the reduction of both these Paleolithic populations, but afterward facilitated the emergence and rapid dispersal of microlithic technologies in East Asia. The peoples associated with microlithic technologies achieved their maximum geographical extent after the Bølling-Allerød Late Glacial interstadial event (ca. 14.7–12.9 ka) and then gradually decreased, perhaps due to the development of agriculture after ∼13 ka with concomitant increasing settlement stability. • Two Paleolithic sites on the Yanshan Mountains were dated using OSL method. • Migrations of Western and indigenous populations correspond to monsoonal fluctuations. • The cold LGM climate engendered a major population shift. • Microblade populations decreased after ∼13 ka due to initiation of agriculture. • The Irrawaddy River and Ganges-Brahmaputra rivers are the main sediment sources of the northern Ninetyeast Ridge over the last 50 kyr. • Millennial-scale periodic changes of weathering and terrigenous input are revealed during the last glacial period. • Shift of depositional center from Bengal Fan to the continental shelf is controlled by sea level changes. The Ninetyeast Ridge is situated within the world's largest sediment "source-sink" system, which extends from the Tibetan Plateau to the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Modest and stable sedimentation rate makes it a suitable region for studying long-term land-sea interaction. Recent research has primarily focused on the northern Bengal Fan, leaving limited knowledge about sedimentary processes on the distant Ninetyeast Ridge. This study aims to address this gap by investigating sediment transport pattern and its response to climatic and environmental changes since the last glacial period, using the gravity core (CJ04–50) selected from the northern Ninetyeast Ridge. The provenance discrimination based on δEu-(Gd/Yb) N revealed that the Irrawaddy (Irr) River, along with the Ganges-Brahmaputra (G-B) Rivers, represented the primary sources of the study area. Quantitative analysis equations indicated that the contribution of the G-B Rivers decreased from the last glacial period (22%) to the Holocene period (16%), while that of the Irr River increased (from 78% to 84%). Chemical index of alteration (CIA*) values, and terrigenous input proxy indicators (Ti/Ca, Rb/Sr) were used to indicate the changes of weathering and terrigenous input over the past 50 kyr. During the last glacial period, CIA*, Ti/Ca and Rb/Sr revealed significantly millennial-scale periodic changes, including the distinct declining trend during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Heinrich 2–4 (H2-H4) periods, followed by recovery trend during subsequent warm periods. During these cold periods of LGM and H2–H4, weakened Indian monsoon condition, reduced precipitation, cold climate, and expanding ice sheets, adversely affected physical erosion and chemical weathering in the source area, and the reduced river runoff impeded sediment transport. Conversely, these environmental factors reversed during relatively warm periods. Since the Holocene, CIA*, Ti/Ca and Rb/Sr declined, which was contrast to the climate change, and the sea level changes became the dominant factor. The rapidly rising sea level submerged the main terrigenous input channel (the Swatch of No Ground) of the G-B Rivers, made the depositional center shift from the Bengal Fan to the continental shelf, causing the decline of terrigenous input and lower CIA* values.
