Eriophyoid mites are among the most species‐rich superfamilies (Eriophyoidea) in the Acari, consisting of over 5000 named species. Although they exhibit a geographically uneven worldwide distribution, their regional spatiotemporal evolutionary patterns remain largely unknown. Here, we compiled a data set including 3058 occurrence records assigned into 1203 species in China. We found that eriophyoid mite species richness is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest of China, coinciding with the 500‐mm annual precipitation isoline. Using fragments of two mitochondrial genes (COI, 12S rRNA) and two nuclear genes (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA) of 304 eriophyoid mite species, we constructed a regional dated phylogenetic tree in China. Our spatiotemporal analysis revealed that mountains in eastern and southern China had high eriophyoid mite species richness and phylogenetic clustering, possessing both ancient and young mite lineages. Species distribution modelling (SDM) results showed that the predicted suitable area of eriophyoid mites slightly expanded from the last inter‐glacial period to the last glacial maximum period. In comparison with the current SDM, a significantly larger distribution range was observed in future scenarios. These findings suggest that mountains in eastern and southern China acted as not only cradles—recent rapid speciation, but also museums—centre of gradual accumulation and preservation and provide insights into monitoring and conserving eriophyoid mites. The study of fire history and driving mechanisms at long time scales can provide a theoretical background for future fire management in forested regions. The alpine lake sediments from Daye Lake in the Qinling Mountains, east‐central China, were used to explore the influence of climate, vegetation and human activity on fires since the LGM, based on charcoals and black carbon. During the last glacial period, fire activity was mostly controlled by regional aridity under a weak East Asian summer monsoon, while human‐induced fires were commonly dominated in the late Holocene. Fire activity was found to be linked to biomass through temperature variability. The biofuel dominated by conifers induced high intensity fires in the last glacial, and herbs contributed more to the high fire frequency over the mid‐late Holocene. With predicted future rising temperatures, increased vegetation cover and extreme climate events may increase the fire risk in the region. Plain Language Summary: Fire activity has an important influence on climate changes and carbon cycling. Understanding past fire history and its driving mechanisms are essential to mitigate the impact of fires. Here, we present fire records from alpine lake sediments in the Qinling Mountains since the LGM. Results indicate that climatological drought under a prevailing weak East Asian summer monsoon increased fire activity during 21.6–11.7 cal ka BP, while human‐induced fires became more common in the late Holocene due to land use, for example, the forest clearing for agriculture and the warfare. And high temperature increases fuel loads, resulting in more fires. Moreover, vegetation types with varying biofuel supply also influence fire activity. We suggest that fire risk may increase in the region with future rising temperature. Our results have implications for understanding fire history and management in other transitional vegetation zones globally. Clues of climate change on the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period (40 ka) are important for revealing the mechanism of desertification of middle-latitude deserts in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Studies are still rare for the understanding of the specific relationship of climate changes between the Alashan Plateau and the global. Based on a systematic and comparative analysis of the existing research in China and the international academic community, this paper reviews the environmental evolution history of the Alashan Plateau since the last glacial period from the records of paleo-environment and geomorphological characteristics in different deserts of the plateau (e.g., Badanjilin, Tenggeli, and Wulanbuhe). From about 40 ka to the end of the last glacial maximum, the climate on the plateau was wetter than it is today, and to the end of the Pleistocene, the climate was generally dry and the aeolian activities were enhanced. However, the climate was arid during the whole last glacial period in the Wulanbuhe Desert, evidently different from the overall pattern of the plateau. The Tenggeli Desert was characterized by an arid climate in the early Holocene. The most controversial events for the Alashan Plateau are the drought events in the middle Holocene in the Badanjilin Desert. The role and impact of the westerlies and the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) systems on the climate change of the desert and even the whole plateau is a vexed question that brings different views in different periods. There is still a lack of definite evidence representing the events of global environmental change that occurred on the plateau during the discussed period. The distinctive morphology of dune mountains and the distribution of sand dunes are mutually indicative of the direction and energy of wind systems on the plateau. It is suggested that appropriate wind energy is the significant key to the desertification in these middle-latitude deserts on the plateau. From a global-scale review of climate change, the desertification of the modern-scale sandy desert landscapes on the Alashan Plateau is generally related to the global glacial period and the cold and dry climate during the past 40 ka. Montane systems provide excellent opportunities to study the rapid radiation influenced by geological and climatic processes. We assessed the role of Pleistocene climatic oscillations and mountain building on the evolution history of Triplophysa robusta, a cold-adapted species restricted to high elevations in China. We found seven differentiated sublineages of T. robusta, which were established during the Mid Pleistocene 0.87-0.61 Mya. The species distribution modeling (SDM) showed an expansion of T. robusta during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and a considerable retraction during the Last Interglacial (LIG). The deep divergence between Clade I distributed in Qinling Mountains and Clade II in Northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) was mainly the result of a vicariance event caused by the rapid uplifting of Qinling Mountains during the Early Pleistocene. While the middling to high level of historical gene flow among different sublineages could be attributed to the dispersal events connected to the repetition of the glacial period during the Pleistocene. Our findings suggested that frequent range expansions and regressions due to Pleistocene glaciers likely have been crucial for driving the phylogeographic pattern of T. robusta. Finally, we urge a burning question in future conservation projection on the vulnerable cold-adapted species endemic to high elevations, as they would be negatively impacted by the recent rapid climate warming. In the piedmont of uplifting mountains, alluvial fan rivers undergo significant aggradation-degradation processes, which are usually attributed to climate change. An ongoing debate is whether this process requests the participation of glaciation. To address this debate, we need the knowledge of the quantitative relationship between the ratio of water to sediment flux (q w / q s) with the aggradation/degradation process. This study examined the aggradation and degradation processes in three alluvial rivers at the piedmont of the Qilian Shan (Shan referes to Mountain) and simulated the river processes by a one-dimensional numerical model based on the transport-limited principle. Along the studied piedmont rivers, field measurements show a magnitude of 120–200 m degradation and aggradation in the Late Pleistocene. Through simulation analysis, we explored how factors like the ratio of water to sediment flux (q w / q s), channel width, and sediment grain size influence river processes and longitudinal profiles, and found distinct morphologies in different processes, where aggradation is characterized by concave-up profiles, while degradation is characterized by convex-down profiles. Additionally, the water flux is inversely proportional to the time required for the river to reach a new equilibrium profile. The simulated degradation amplitude aligns closely with the measured data in the Qilian Shan, indicating that precipitation during the Last Glacial Maximum in the region amounted to approximately ∼32% of the Holocene precipitation. The Greater Khingan and Yanshan mountain ranges in northern China not only constitute a significant physical obstacle to the northward movement of monsoon circulation, but also represent a natural barrier for human migration and cultural interactions between in-migrating Paleolithic populations and those indigenous to East Asia during the Late Pleistocene. We dated two Paleolithic sites, Yangzhuangxishan and Taiziling, located in the southern piedmont of the Yanshan Mountains with artifacts typified by simple core and flake technology associated with foraging populations, to ∼39–29 ka and ∼ 52–47 ka respectively, using the optically stimulated luminescence dating method. Our results indicate that northern China as far south as the Yanshan Mountains was occupied mainly by autochthonous East Asian Paleolithic populations using a core and flake lithic technology, although during this period Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) modern humans and Mousterian populations dispersed into East Asia. By synthesizing and integrating the ages of Northeast Asian Paleolithic sequences during the last glacial period (ca. 70–10 ka), we analyzed spatio-temporal variations in Late Pleistocene human populations during relatively cold stadial events (MIS 4 & 2) and warmer interstadials (e.g., MIS 3), revealing an "ebb and flow" pattern for migrations of Western IUP/Mousterian populations and indigenous core and flake technology populations in East Asia corresponding to the advance and retreat of the East Asian monsoon regime. The subsequent extremely cold climate phase engendered a major population shift during the Last Glacial Maximum (ca. 26.5–19 ka) which drove the reduction of both these Paleolithic populations, but afterward facilitated the emergence and rapid dispersal of microlithic technologies in East Asia. The peoples associated with microlithic technologies achieved their maximum geographical extent after the Bølling-Allerød Late Glacial interstadial event (ca. 14.7–12.9 ka) and then gradually decreased, perhaps due to the development of agriculture after ∼13 ka with concomitant increasing settlement stability. • Two Paleolithic sites on the Yanshan Mountains were dated using OSL method. • Migrations of Western and indigenous populations correspond to monsoonal fluctuations. • The cold LGM climate engendered a major population shift. • Microblade populations decreased after ∼13 ka due to initiation of agriculture. To reveal the historical dynamics of the population and existing genetic structure, maternal chloroplast DNA fragments(psbA-trnH, psbI-psbK and psbJ-petA)were used to study the phylogeography of Prinsepia uniflora, a kind of endemic plant distributed in the Loess Plateau. The results were as follows:(1)Total genetic diversity of P. uniflora was high(HT = 0.796), but genetic diversity within species was low(HS= 0.276);(2)The molecular variation analysis(AMOVA)showed that there was a high genetic differentiation within P. uniflora(FST = 0.674), and the genetic variation was mainly between populations(67.4%);(3)Mismatch analysis and MaxEnt based ecological niche simulation results in different historical periods showed that although the core suitable range of P. uniflora did not change much, population still expanded to some extent after the end of the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM). Our study indicated that, like most of the plant groups distributed in the northern regions of China, P. uniflora probably responded to the Quaternary climatic fluctuations by taking refuge nearby or in situ during the glacial period and locally recolonizing in following post-glacial period. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 21 ka BP) was the most recent glacial period when the global ice sheet volume was at a maximum. Therefore, the LGM can be used to investigate atmospheric dynamics under a climate that differed significantly from the present. This study quantitatively compares pollen records of boreal summer (June–July–August) precipitation with the PMIP3 LGM simulations. The data-model comparison shows an overall agreement on a drier than pre-industrial East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) climate. Nevertheless, 17 out of 55 records show a regional precipitation increase that is also simulated over the additional land mass area due to sea level drop. The thermodynamic and dynamic responses are analyzed to explain a drier LGM EASM as a combination of these two antagonistic mechanisms. Relatively low atmospheric moisture content was the main thermodynamic control on the lower LGM (relative to pre-industrial levels) EASM precipitation amounts in both the reconstructions and the models. In contrast, two dynamic processes in relation to stationary eddy activity act to increase EASM precipitation regionally in records and simulations, respectively. Precipitation increase in records is explained by dynamic enhancement of the horizontal moisture transport, while dynamic enhancement of the vertical moisture transport leads to simulated precipitation increase over the specific region where landmass was exposed during LGM along continental coastlines of China due to significant drop in sea level (relative to pre-industrial levels). Overall, the opposing effects of thermodynamic and dynamic processes on precipitation during the LGM provide a means to reconcile the spatial heterogeneity of recorded precipitation changes in sign, although data-model comparison suggests that the simulated dynamic wetting mechanism is too weak relative to the thermodynamic drying mechanism over data-model disagreement regions. 1. Identifying the macro‐scale patterns and the underlying mechanisms of species richness are key aspects of biodiversity‐related research. In China, previous studies on the mechanisms underlying insect richness have primarily focused on the current ecological conditions. Therefore, the impact of historical climate change on these mechanisms is less well understood. 2. Here, we use members of the Delphacidae family to evaluate the relative impact of the current environmental conditions and that of the Last Glacial Maximum on total species richness and endemism. Total species richness and endemic species richness were summed in 1° × 1° grid cells that the insects occupied. Generalised linear models, simultaneous autoregressive models, and random forest models were used to assess the effects of different environmental factors on total species richness and endemism. 3. The two patterns of species richness are jointly regulated by the current environment and the Last Glacial Maximum, but their key determinants differ. Winter coldness and the temperature annual range strongly affected the total species richness, but temperature variation during the Last Glacial Maximum also played an important role in the development of species richness. The distribution of endemic species was most strongly affected by the Last Glacial Maximum temperature change. 4. The studies confirm that historical climate change contributes to patterns of insect species richness, particularly patterns of endemism. Considering that China was mildly affected by the last glacial period, we propose that the incorporation of historical climate data into such studies will provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Generally, island populations are predicted to have less genetic variation than their mainland relatives. However, a growing number of studies have nevertheless reported exceptions, indicating that the relationships were impacted by several factors, for example, historical processes. In the present study, we chose a group of subtropical islands located in South China as the study system, which are quite younger and much closer to the mainland than most of the previous studied island systems, to test the hypothesis that in situ glacial survival contributes to high levels of genetic diversity in island populations. We conducted a comparison of genetic variation between 12 island and 11 nearby mainland populations of Mussaenda kwangtungensis using eleven nuclear microsatellite and three chloroplast markers, evaluated effects of the island area and distance to mainland on genetic diversity of island populations, and simulated the potential distribution over the past by ecological niche modeling, together with the genetic data to detect the role of islands during the glacial periods. The island populations displayed comparable levels of genetic diversity and differentiation with mainland populations, overall high levels of unique polymorphisms, and the greatest values of specific within‐population genetic diversity. No significant correlation was detected between genetic diversity of island populations and distance to mainland, as well as area of islands, except that allelic richness was significantly positively correlated with the area of islands. Nuclear microsatellites revealed two main clusters, largely corresponding to islands and inland populations, which divergence dated to a time of island formation by ABC analysis. Ecological niche modeling predicted a highly climatic suitability on islands during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Our results suggest that the islands have acted as refugia during the LGM and highlight the role of in situ glacial survival in maintaining high levels of genetic diversity of M. kwangtungensis in continental islands of subtropical China. Orographic and climatic oscillations have played crucial roles in shaping the nucleotide diversity and evolutionary history of many species across the Northern Hemisphere. In this study, based on 10 nuclear loci and a chloroplast DNA marker, we analyzed the nucleotide polymorphisms and demographic history of the endangered conifer species Pinus bungeana in Northwest China and investigated the phylogenetic relationships between P. bungeana and two related species, that is, Pinus gerardiana and Pinus squamata. We found that P. bungeana exhibited an extremely low level of nucleotide diversity (πsil = 0.00159). Demographic simulations based on DIYABC analysis showed that P. bungeana underwent demographic expansion and contraction during the Miocene. According to ecological niche modeling, we found that this species survived in situ during the glacial period and was not restricted to southern refugia. We speculate that P. bungeana may have experienced widespread population shrinkage from the Last Interglacial to the Last Glacial Maximum due to geological or climatic events. Isolation‐with‐migration analysis revealed that the divergence (~2.4–4.2 Ma) among P. bungeana and its related species was significantly associated with the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau uplift events in the mid‐to‐late Tertiary period. Species tree analyses suggested that these three related Pinus species formed a monophyletic clade with high bootstrap support. These results suggest that the Miocene–Pliocene and Pleistocene geological and climatic fluctuations might have profoundly affected the nucleotide diversity and demography of this psychrotolerant conifer species in western China. We present triple oxygen isotope data from speleothems obtained by an O 2 -CO 2 Pt-catalyzed oxygen-isotope equilibration method. The high precision (9 per meg or better, 1σ SD) of our new speleothem Δ17O (carbonate 17O anomaly) data is sufficient to resolve subtle hydroclimatic signals. In addition, we determined triple oxygen isotope fractionation factors through two sets of modern paired carbonate-dripwater samples collected at a temperature of 17 ± 1 °C, which is prerequisite to the calculation of triple oxygen isotope compositions of parent meteoric waters at cave sites from speleothem proxy data. Based on this calibration, we back calculated triple oxygen isotope compositions of parent waters across well-characterized climate transitions using speleothem proxy data from three regions. Resulting oxygen-isotope data closely track the Global Meteoric Water Line (GMWL), providing a preliminary validation of the method. Our speleothem Δ17O data indicate a 21 per meg difference between Marine Isotope Stage 5d and 5e in samples from Central Asia and a 15 per meg difference between the Middle Holocene and Last Glacial Maximum in samples from the eastern Mediterranean, suggesting a shift in moisture source and/or fractionation history. Unexpectedly, there were no measurable Δ17O differences between glacial and interglacial samples from both the South American (western Amazon) and Asian (southern China) monsoon domains, implying consistent moisture-source conditions across glacial and interglacial cycles, at least in terms of relative humidity. Remarkably, Δ17O values from the western Amazonian samples are significantly higher (∼20 per meg) than those from Asian monsoon regions, suggesting lower relative humidity along moisture trajectories in the western Amazon during the Middle Holocene and Last Glacial period. Similarly, Δ17O values of the eastern Mediterranean samples are significantly higher (19–55 per meg) than those of coeval samples from Central Asia, implying different hydrological environments or moisture sources despite being in the same westerly circulation domain. Late Paleolithic sites are widely distributed in southern China (the Lingnan region), which mainly includes Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan Provinces. Although the pebble-tool industry continued to exist in this region during the late Pleistocene and Holocene, small flake-tool assemblages also occurred and coexisted with the pebble-tool industry. The pebble-tool industries are characterized by unifacially flaked cobble tools, dominated by choppers, with a lack of handaxes. The small flake-tool industries have the characteristics of retouched tools made on small fakes, a striking platform of cores without preparation, and scrapers dominating the assemblage. Technologically and typologically, pebble tools of the Late Palaeolithic are similar to those of the Early Palaeolithic in this region and belong to the same cultural tradition. The small flake tools, however, are very different from the cobble tools. They belong to a new technology which originated from northern China during the period of the Last Glacial Maximum. Background. Isoetes yunguiensis Q. F. Wang & W. C. Taylor is a lycophyte of an ancient genus, and it is endemic to China. It is a first-class protected plant in China. This living fossil is used in paleoecology and studies on the evolution of Lycophytes in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. In recent years, human activities have caused the disappearance of several wild populations, and the number of plants in the existing populations is low. Study of the genetic structure, distribution pattern, and historical dynamics of I. yunguiensis in all areas of its distribution is of guiding significance for its rational and effective protection. Methods. Expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers were used to study the genetic diversity and structure of I. yunguiensis, and noncoding chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequences were used to study the pedigree, population dynamics history, and glacial shelter of I. yunguiensis. A maximum entropy model was used to predict the past, present, and future distribution patterns of I. yunguiensis. Results. Analysis with EST-SSR markers revealed that I. yunguiensis showed high genetic diversity and that genetic variation was significantly higher within populations than between populations. Based on cpDNA data, it was concluded that there was no significant geographic pedigree in the whole area of I. yunguiensis distribution (NST D 0.344 > GST D 0.183, p > 0:05); 21 haplotypes were detected using DnaSP v5. Neutral test and LAMARC simulation showed that I. yunguiensis has experienced rapid expansion in recent years. The maximum entropy model predicted that the potential distribution area of I. yunguiensis in the last glacial maximum period has increased significantly compared with the present distribution area, but the future distribution area did not show substantial changes. Distinct moraine complexes are well-preserved at the headwaters of the Requ River valley on the southern slope of Bujia Gangri, the largest center of modern glaciation in the eastern Tanggula Mountains in western China. Dating these moraines is an important step in understanding glacial history, palaeoclimate, and landscape evolution in this region. Surface exposure dating using 10Be was done on twenty-three rock samples from large granitic boulders embedded in moraine crests were collected from the Yongqu River valley and the Daxiong River valley, two glaciated valleys at the headwaters of the Requ River valley. The moraines (M W1 and M E1) closest to the current glaciers in the west (main) and east (hanging) valleys of the Yongqu River valley were dated to 203 ± 51 a (n = 4) and 162 ± 58 a (n = 3); the inner four end moraines (M W3 – 1) and outer ones (M W3 – 2) of the third moraine complex (M W3) in the main valley date to 16.8 ± 1.8 ka (n = 3) and 20.7 ± 1.3 ka (n = 2); end moraines (M E2) near the mouth of the east valley and a high lateral moraine (M EL) on its east side date to 18.9 ± 3.0 ka (n = 4); and a high lateral moraine in the Daxiong valley (M DXL) dates to 18.6 ± 1.3 ka (n = 3). The dating results indicate that these moraines were formed during the Little Ice Age (LIA), the Heinrich 1 (H1) event period, and the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM G). These glacial events are synchronous with those across the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and its surrounding mountains. Combining the palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental proxies in the TP and its surroundings, we infer that the cooling during the LIA, H1, and LGM G was a main control for these glacial advances. • A preliminary 10Be chronological framework since LGM G has been established in the eastern Tanggula Mountains. • Cooling during LIA, Heinrich 1 and LGM G glacial periods is the main determinant for palaeoglacier fluctuations. • A teleconnection between the North Atlantic cooling and palaeoglaciations since LGM G in the TP has been established. Substantial stratigraphic evidence from the Late Quaternary at orbital- and millennial‒scales indicates that the formation and evolution of aeolian‒sand landscapes results from the interaction between regional aeolian and fluvial‒lacustrine activity. In many deserts (sandy lands) across the planet, fluvial‒aeolian interplay at the glacial‒interglacial scale since the Late Quaternary has been responsive to monsoonal precipitation, and linked to atmospheric CO 2 and periodic variations in insolation. However, the patterns of fluvial‒aeolian interplay and their relationship with climate change are not always consistent over a given timescale during the Late Pleistocene. The paucity of studies on fluvial‒aeolian interplay in the Mu Us Desert (MUD) during the Last Glacial Period (LGP) hinders our understanding of the relationships between the dynamics of aeolian and fluvial‒lacustrine landscapes and their drivers. Here, based on a comprehensive field survey and stratigraphic dating of a typical fluvial‒aeolian sequence in the MUD, we synthesized the chronology of fluvial‒lacustrine and aeolian strata during the LGP. Our results show that extensive development of a fluvial‒lacustrine environment in the MUD during the LG mainly occurred during the late Last Glacial Maximum (LGMa, 20.1–18.4 ka BP) and Bølling/Allerød interstadial (14.8–12.6 ka BP), while thicker aeolian sands extensively accumulated during the Heinrich Stadial 2, Heinrich Stadial 1, and Younger Dryas periods. However, the development of fluvial‒lacustrine environments showed considerable spatial heterogeneity, mainly occurring on the southern and eastern margins of the desert, while they were extremely rare in the central and western parts of the desert owing to strong wind erosion. Comparisons with other high-resolution geological records from the Asian monsoon region reveal that the fluvial‒aeolian interplay in the MUD during the LGP was highly consistent with the evolution pattern of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) on the millennial‒centennial scale, and indicate that the development of fluvial‒lacustrine environments was mainly controlled by an increase in monsoonal precipitation during strengthening of the EASM. Glacial landforms on Mount Taibai, the main peak of the Qinling Mountains, China, are investigated to improve understanding of Quaternary palaeoclimate evolution in this key region of China's geographical north and south junction. Cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be exposure dating and glacier-climate modeling are used to reconstruct glacier evolution during the last glaciation in the Eryehai Valley, on the slopes of Mount Taibai. Chronological results indicate that the earliest initiation of the Mount Taibai glaciation was earlier than the global Last Glacial Maximum (gLGM). The glacier subsequently advanced further reaching its greatest extent during the gLGM between ∼23.50 ka and 21.76 ka. After this time, the glacier receded rapidly, before disappearing completely between ∼17.9 ka and 17.7 ka. We also analyzed a compilation of 229 recalculated 10Be exposure ages from the mountain ranges on the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), as well as in the Jaggang Mountains on the south-central TP, and found that a few mountain ranges on the eastern TP experienced two distinct millennial-scale moraine building events during the gLGM. Using glacier-climate modeling, temperature was calculated to have fallen from between ∼9.0 and 9.4 °C during the gLGM, with precipitation being 60–80% of the present-day value. If precipitation during the rapid retreat of the glacier between ∼21.76 ka and 18.10 ka were to be consistent with present trends, then the temperature would have needed to increase by a total of ∼1.3 °C during this period, with a mean rate of increase of 0.4 °C/ka. Combining our findings with other paleoclimate proxies, we infer that the main reason that there was no further glacial advance after the gLGM on Mount Taibai was the lower altitude of its peak relative to the Equilibrium-line Altitude (ELA). • Empirical soil-climate/paleosol-paleoclimate transfer functions were established. • Paleoclimatic recorded in paleosols of Chinese loess sections can be reconstructed. • Based on samples all over China, the functions are widely applicable across China. • We reconstructed the Late Pleistocene paleoclimatic of northeastern China. • We point out preconditions and limitations of such transfer functions. The degree of weathering and soil formation under similar conditions with respect to parent material, relief position, vegetation, and age mainly depends on the climatic conditions. Therefore, various weathering indices have been used successfully to reconstruct past mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) based on the expression of these weathering indices in paleosols. Yet, no specific soil-climate transfer function has been established to reconstruct paleoclimates based on paleosols in Chinese loess profiles. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between several weathering indices and present climatic conditions for 49 soils throughout different climate zones in China (21°42′–47°54′ N), which were all developed in loess or similar Quaternary silty sediments. We aimed to establish soil-climate transfer functions that can be widely applied to paleosol-based paleoenvironmental reconstructions in Chinese loess archives and to apply them to a pedosedimentary record in northeastern China, where paleoclimatic information is still scarce. Overall, MAT showed the strongest relationship with the weathering index ba1 ((K 2 O + Na 2 O)/Al 2 O 3), with MAT = –29.887 ba1 + 22.361 (R2 = 0.788), and MAP showed the closest relationship with the Chemical Proxy of Alteration (CPA: Al 2 O 3 × 100/(Al 2 O 3 + Na 2 O)), with MAP = 0.0843 CPA3 – 20.143 CPA2 + 1630.7 CPA – 44,244 (R2 = 0.898). We applied these two transfer functions to a Late-Pleistocene pedosedimentary record in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, to reconstruct MAT and MAP from the onset of the Last Glacial Period until the Last Glacial Maximum. Our reconstruction yielded a warm-humid climate until the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5/4 transition and a trend towards a cooler and drier climate thereafter, interrupted by a somewhat warmer and more humid period during MIS 3. Despite several limitations, the newly established transfer functions can be applied to paleosols in loess-paleosol sections across the Chinese monsoon region and other regions around the world whose climates and parent materials are within the range covered by this study, because of the large supra-regional distribution of the soils included in this study. The impact of abrupt climate change during glacial periods on terrestrial ecosystems are widely acknowledged by paleoecology and paleoclimate communities as key issues in the ongoing debate on geographical distribution and patterns of genetic diversity of species. However, the C 4 plant expansion in subtropical South China at the mouth of the Pearl River during the glaciated Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2) in response to millennial-scale climate changes is largely unknown. In this study we present results of the isotopic composition of sediment organic carbon (δ13C TOC) obtained from a high-resolution fluvial sequence from the Pearl River delta plain in southern China to show millennial-scale C 3 /C 4 ecosystem changes during the MIS 2 interval. Three major C 4 grassland expansions and declines of the monsoon rainforest landscape are identified during the MIS 2 period. Our results reveal that during MIS 2 δ13C TOC values shifted profoundly from about −29 ‰ to enriched values of up to −17 ‰ three times and we interpret these as due to episodic expansions of the C 4 plants to form a mixed C 3 /C 4 plant ecosystem with the collapse of a pure C 3 monsoon rainforest community in this region. These drastic expansions of C 4 ecological systems occurred at 24.8–24 ka, 23.8–21 ka, and 18–15.6 ka cal BP intervals, equivalent to well-known Heinrich Stadial (HS) 2, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and HS1 super-cold Northern Hemisphere intervals. Abstract: Glacial deposits are present at the head of the Ürümqi River valley, Tianshan, Central Asia. 10Be surface exposure ages of 15 boulders from three sites along a 12 km valley transect range from 9 to 21 ka suggesting emplacement by glacial retreat and advance commencing at the global last glacial maximum (LGM) and most likely abating in the early Holocene. Although the age spread for a given locality is not small, perhaps indicating post-depositional reworking, maximum ages per site are either coeval with or are post-LGM and inconsistent with previous pre-LGM electron spin resonance ages. Records of carbonate ion concentration ([CO 3 2−]) and benthic carbon isotope (δ13C) have profound implications for exploring deep water circulation and global carbon cycle. However, information on the glacial-interglacial deep ocean [CO 3 2−] changes is still limited, especially in the Pacific Ocean. Here, we present new deep water [CO 3 2−] records of the last glacial cycle, reconstructed by the B/Ca ratios of benthic foraminifera Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi from two cores in the South China Sea (SCS). The deep water [CO 3 2−] changes of the SCS display similar trends with that of the western Pacific as well as "Pacific-type" CaCO 3 (%), suggesting that the deep water carbonate chemistry of the SCS may reflect that of the Pacific. Our results support that carbonate dissolution is the primary driver for "Pacific-type" CaCO 3 preservation during the late Quaternary glacial cycles. At the marine isotope stage (MIS) 5a to MIS 4 transition, deep water [CO 3 2−] decreased with an amplitude of ∼7 μmol/kg in the SCS, roughly consistent with that from the Pacific cores at 2300–4300 m water depth. Considering a greater oceanic alkalinity and stronger carbonate dissolution at that time, this implies that deep Pacific carbon storage increased. The gradients of deep water [CO 3 2−] and δ13C between the Pacific and the SCS reduced during extreme glacials (e.g., MIS 2, 4 and 6) relative to interglacials (e.g., MIS 1 and 5e), indicating weakened deep ocean ventilation and more sluggish Pacific deep-water circulation. This change is also confirmed by meridional δ13C distributions in the western Pacific for the Holocene and the last glacial maximum (LGM), and further supported by climate simulations using a complex Earth System Model. The Yangtze Plain (floodplains in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River) is a region with numerous lakes, including the three largest freshwater lakes in China, i.e. Poyang Lake (PYL), Dongting Lake (DTL), and Taihu Lake (THL). The formation mechanism of these lakes offers insights into the ongoing debate concerning the interaction between tectonic activity, climate, sea-level, human impact, and Earth-surface processes. Previous studies have usually focused on individual lakes, so there remains no over-arching and consistent framework for lake formation in the region as a whole. Here we review published sedimentary and chronological records on the above three lakes and propose that sea-level change has determined their formation. During the last glacial maximum (LGM; ca 30–20 ka), with a sea-level >120 m lower than present, a landscape of incised valleys and interfluves prevailed over the entire Yangtze Plain, including the DTL area, which is >1400 km upstream from the modern river mouth, and there was no large lake on the plain. The lakes emerged in the Holocene, although more precise ages await further investigations. The glacial sea-level lowstand, with concomitant headward incision, was responsible for the extensive deeply incised landscape of the LGM, whereas the Holocene high sea-level, with resultant infilling of the incised valleys, accounted for the formation of lakes. This sea-level forcing hypothesis suggests a more far-reaching influence of sea-level change on the Yangtze Plain, and a closer relationship between Earth-surface processes and glacial–interglacial cycles (global climate) than is commonly believed. According to our newly hypothesized climate-controlled geomorphological (CCG) model, it is very likely that similar lake-forming processes could have occurred multiple times during earlier glacial–interglacial cycles, and that this pattern might also have occurred in many other river systems in the eastern coastal areas of China, as well as in other similar river plains worldwide, thus having an important role in shaping modern coastal-plain landscapes.
