• An optimization method for gradient doping Yb: YAG composite multi-segmented slab laser with high average power. • The heat distribution model is designed to calculate the light field distribution and heat distribution. We report an optimization method for gradient doping Yb: YAG composite multi-segmented slab laser with high average power. Each segment's absorption coefficient is optimized. An internal heat source model is created for the optimization of the optical field and heat distribution. The optimized maximum temperature is reduced by 6.93 K. The stress and the peak to valley (PV) are reduced by 8.35 % and 4.2 %, respectively. The results show that the optimization method can significantly reduce the maximum temperature and stress, which is generally suitable for gradient doping lasers to optimize their beam quality.
