This article presents the course of the 5th International Scientific Conference “Ukrainian studies: yesterday, today, tomorrow…” work, which is organized every two years by the Department of Ukrainian Studies at Adam Mickiewicz University. The conference took place on October 22–23, 2020 and was entirely online, using the Microsoft Teams platform. 47 researchers from Poland and abroad participated in the conference. The meetings were divided into five different thematic sections, the languages of the sessions were Polish and Ukrainian. The aim of the conference was to discuss the current problems of Ukrainian studies, including linguistics, literary studies, culturology. The culmination of the conference was round table discussion “Ukrainian noir and Oles Ulyanenko’s creative work”.

The article deals with the role of the Old Ukrainian (Ruthenian) language in the educational process in Ukraine in the 1st half of the 17th century. It is based on the works by the prominent polemicist, scholar, and religious actor Cassian Sakovych. The study is based on his works “Desiderosus” and “Perspektiwa”, which reflected the author’s approaches to the stated problem in different periods of his life. The relevance of the theme lies in its insufficient study, as well as in the special role of the development of education and language in nation-building.Relying on the analysis of these works, it is concluded that already in the mid-1620s Cassian Sakovich believed that an effective system of national education could be built primarily on the basis of the positive experience of the Roman Catholic Church. He defended this idea almost to the end of his life. In the early 1640s, Cassian Sakovych supplemented his views on education with a public statement in “Perspektiwa” about the priority of the vernacular (Ruthenian) language in the educational process of domestic schools (“Let Ruthenia teach Ruthenians in Ruthenian”). Such a position probably resulted from reconsideration of the 1620s’ experience, when he emphasized the role of the vernacular (Ruthenian) language in the religious life of Ukrainians. It was concluded that Cassian Sakovych was the first Ukrainian nationalist of the Lithuanian-Polish era to raise the issue of the role of the vernacular in the cultural life of Ukrainians in his public debate.Priorities in the educational process give us the opportunity to imagine how exactly Cassian Sakovych saw representatives of the new generation of educated Ukrainians in the early 1640s. In his view, those were people who combined achievements of three cultures – their own national (Ukrainian), Polish, and Greek.

The purpose of this article is to investigate the specifics of Ukrainian studies in the cultural and scholarly activities of the Ukrainian military emigration. Based on its archival documents and research publications, such issues are covered: the origins of cultural and scholarly activities of the Ukrainian military emigration in view of its internment in 1920–1921; the place of the Ukrainian studies direction in the activities of scientific military societies and respective museum departments; Ukrainian studies aspects concerned by the representatives of the Ukrainian military emigration in their scientific works.The research process provided such results: the cultural and scientific activities of the Ukrainian military emigration stemmed from the work of the Military Section of the Ukrainian Diplomatic Mission and cultural and educational commissions, which provided camp soldiers with lectures on Ukrainian studies, literary and theatrical arts, and library work. The activities of scientific military societies and museum departments presented the direction of Ukrainian studies in the collection of archival documents and materials on the National Liberation War of 1917–1921, publication of thematic editions, lectures on Ukrainian history, and participation in ceremonial and memorial events, which were conducted in the academic environment of the Ukrainian emigration. In their research works, representatives of the Ukrainian military emigration touched upon aspects of the history of Ukraine during the National Liberation War of 1917–1921, the Cossacks, Ukrainian ethnography and geography. They managed to have accumulated significant intellectual outcome in the field of Ukrainian studies, which is still relevant today. The achievement of the author of the study is a synthesis created on the basis of a comprehensive study of sources and historiography, which consider the problem of Ukrainian military emigration in the interwar period in the light of Ukrainian studies, which is quite unusual for the respective field of domestic historiography. This made it possible to obtain new conclusions.

The article considers the use of handicraft sheepskin and leather clothes in the wedding ceremonies of the Middle Dnieper Ukrainians in the late 19th – early 20th century. It is established that they have performed important ritual and protective functions. In particular, the ritual function means that clothes served as ritual attributes. In gifting ceremonies, the sheepskin and leather clothes had both practical and special semantic meanings (for example, by giving boots to the bride’s mother, the groom showed his respect and appreciation). The protective function is connected with ancient beliefs about the power of ritual attributes and magic acts. In particular, the leather in the culture of East Slavic people is associated with birth and renewal, while the sheepskin was the symbol of wealth and fertility. In wedding ceremonies, the sheepskin was associated with a cloud, while the wheat grains were thrown over the bridal couple as a symbol of rain and fertility. We may define pre-wedding, wedding, and post-wedding rituals with sheepskin and leather clothes. The most widespread pre-wedding ritual was gifting leather boots to the fiancée and sewing a flower into the fiancé’s sheepskin hat on the engagement day. A sheepskin coat turned inside out played an essential role in the Ukrainian traditional wedding. The highest level of concentration of various magical symbols is retraced in the ceremony of send-off and reception of a newly married couple. In post-wedding rituals, the sheepskin coat was used for costume games to introduce such characters as a bride and a groom, animals, gypsies, etc.

The article describes the influence of online teaching on the learning of Ukrainian stylistics. Apart from addressing the theoretical issues concerning online teaching and the teaching of Ukrainian stylistics, the article presents the characteristics of teaching this course (including the course contents) at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Wrocław. The analysis of the problem was based on a survey conducted among MA students of Ukrainian studies at the University of Wrocław, who partially (in the summer semester of the academic year 2019/20220) or fully (in the academic year 2020/2021) participated in online classes using communication platforms. The survey consisted of twelve questions. The first six survey items dealt with general issues related to online learning while the remaining six questions addressed the students’ statements regarding their learning and teaching of Ukrainian language stylistics. Almost 50% of the MA students participated in the anonymous survey. These were the first-year MA students (who took stylistics classes only remotely) and the second-year students (who took stylistics classes in the classroom-based traditional form in the winter semester 2019/2020 while in the summer semester they already studied remotely). The descriptive responses provided to the questions in the second part of the questionnaire, which indicated that learning Ukrainian, particularly in the sphere of speaking and communication, suffered from isolation, were extremely relevant to the study. The delivery of Ukrainian language stylistics classes (on-site or remote) is theoretically not radically different. The character of these classes, i.e. mainly the work involving the reading texts, elaborating them, writing students’ own texts, doing written exercises, means that they can be conducted remotely without any loss of quality, as compared to the classes conducted on-site. However, what was an apparent problem of online classes was the issue of verifying students’ knowledge (controlling the completion of only shorter exercises during online classes and the lengthy process of checking more extensive homework done in various techniques - in text editors, but mainly handwritten assignments which were then scanned or photographed). The article examines the research of famous Ukrainian scientist Yuri Shevelov developing Ukrainian studies associations in period of emigration after World War II, when Ukrainian novelists were united in Ukrainian Аrt Movement (1945-1948). The attention is focused on those meetings which have been arranged by Shevelov and his confederates for the unification of different segments of Ukrainian creative intelligentsia in difficult conditions that were caused by emigration from the motherland. During those years, the scientist was considering questions among the important problems of Ukrainian studies about originality of Ukrainian literature, emigration purpose, provinciality and the methods of its overcoming. It is proved that the concept of national organic style, as a constant of Ukrainian literary and artistic life, was extremely important in the scientist's views. Yuri Shevelov made its main provisions like one of the leading ideologists of Ukrainian Аrt Movement during the existence of this association. The original idea of national organic style had caused the rejection from some part of Ukrainian emigrants and led to a boisterous discussion where there were considered important questions about Ukrainian originality of national literature and its place in European and world culture. The article highlights the essence of discrepancy of views on national organic style between Yuri Shevelov and his opponents. The most famous of them was Volodymyr Derzhavin. There is an emphasis that Ukrainian Аrt Movement went beyond just literature organization due to Shevelov's efforts. It had opened not only a grand literature, but even publishing and research activities and became an important branch in the history of Ukrainian literature in a relatively short period of time.

There are studied political, social and other grounds of formation of the Transdniestrian political elite and civil society as self-sustained political phenomena. These institutes have been developing not isolatedly but in the framework of those political processes that were typical for the region during the period of its establishment and existence in different social and political conditions. There are summarized and analyzed different aspects of the Ukrainian factor impact over these processes as by direct influence of the Ukrainian political elite and civil society, as well as in the context of ideological concepts formulated in the Ukrainian political discourse during a long period of time. Concrete methods of the Ukrainian political class impact over the Transdniestrian political elite and civil society are also presented. A very special activity of the Ukrainian side could be seen up to 2014, when the Transdniestrian political elite had been considered in Kiev as an independent subject with its own interests that in its turn determined the choice of certain forms of impact. Direct inter-elite communication used to be one of the most meaningful forms of such impact, that allowed to identify the sides’ interests and to find mutually acceptable decisions on the highest and high levels. Since 2014 the situation has changed dramatically. The Ukrainian political elite refuses to recognize the Transdniestrian political elite’s status of a separate (independent) subject and considers it to be a tool for the Russia’s interests’ implementation. There appears a special role of the border factor as of a key resource for pressure over the Transdniestrian political elite, its business interests, options for traffic etc. The same way the Ukrainian side minimized contacts with the Transdniestrian civil society. But at the same time Ukrainians keep for themselves the option for monitoring the Transdniestrian political system. In the Ukrainian political narrative there appears a contradiction, when the Ukrainian political authorities can’t use a symbolic potential of a number of Transdniestrian locations, actual for the modern political ideology of Ukraine only because that these locations are situated on the territory controlled by the Transdniestrian political elite whilst Ukrainians avoid any contacts with the latter.

Відомо, що процес культуротворення в українській діаспорі був тривалим, а його головна мета – духовна консолідація українців усього світу в інтересах відродження, розвитку й примноження національно-культурних традицій українців, адже це сприяє збереженню цілісності української культури й зміцненню позицій України в світовому співтоваристві. Стаття присвячена питанню функціонування етнокультурних традицій в українському зарубіжжі. Досліджується культурне надбання наших предків та форми побутування й збереження народних традицій зарубіжним українством. Обґрунтовується важливість дослідження багатьох аспектів українського культуротворення, розкривається питання вивчення діаспорної культури в контексті загальнонаціонального культурного процесу, що допомагає консолідації українців як в Україні, так і за її межами. Упродовж багатьох років зарубіжним українством зібрано значний духовно-культурний потенціал: створено наукові, літературні, мистецькі цінності, унікальні пісенні зразки, що зумовило появу культурологічного феномену – діаспорної культури, яка є вагомою складовою українського національного культурного простору. Саме зусиллями й наполегливою працею представників української діаспори було організовано громадсько-освітні осередки, релігійні й мистецькі об’єднання, музичні фольклорно-хореографічні колективи, в яких зберігалося й розвивалося народне мистецтво.Акцентується увага на формах передачі етнокультурних надбань в українському зарубіжжі молодому поколінню за допомогою просвітництва, шляхом відкриття навчальних інституцій різного типу й організації мистецьких та культурно-розважальних заходів. Порушується питання важливості збереження української народної пісні як феномену музичної культури. Цікавим постає дослідження емігрантських пісень, адже ці фольклорні тексти утворилися поза межами України, в іншому середовищі. Найважливішою інституцією збереження етнокультурних кодів є люди, які залишаються носіями мистецьких надбань своїх предків., It is known that the process of cultural formation in the Ukrainian diaspora was long, its main goal consisting in the spiritual consolidation of Ukrainians around the world for the sake of revival, development, and multiplication of their national and cultural traditions. This would contribute to preserving the integrity of Ukrainian culture and consolidating the position of Ukraine in the global community. The article is devoted to the functioning of ethnocultural traditions of Ukrainians abroad. It studies the cultural heritage of our ancestors and the forms of life and preservation of folk traditions by Ukrainians in foreign countries.The article substantiates the importance of studying many aspects of Ukrainian cultural creation, reveals the issue of studying diaspora culture in the context of the national cultural process, which helps to consolidate Ukrainians both in Ukraine and abroad. For many years, Ukrainians worldwide have accumulated significant spiritual and cultural potential, created scientific, literary, artistic values, unique song samples, which led to the emergence of a cultural phenomenon – diaspora culture – which is an important part of the Ukrainian national cultural space. Through their efforts and hard work, the Ukrainian diaspora organized public and educational centers, religious and artistic associations, folk musical and choreographic groups, in which folk art was preserved and developed.Emphasis is placed on the forms of transmission of ethnocultural heritage by Ukrainians abroad to the younger generation through education and educational institutions of various types, organization of artistic, cultural, and entertaining events. The article raises the question of the importance of preserving Ukrainian folk songs as a phenomenon of musical culture. It is interesting to study emigrant songs because these folk texts were formed outside of Ukraine, in a different environment. The most important institution for the preservation of ethnocultural codes are people, who remain the bearers of the artistic heritage of their ancestors.

У статті на підставі документальних джерел і текстів Священного Писання доводиться існування на території Дубенщини в роки Хмельниччини незвичного обряду покозачення, частиною якого було підперезання покозачених рушниками; зроблено спробу з’ясування його генези і внутрішньої сутності. Відзначено, що ключем до розуміння проблеми є сприйняття рушника не лише як утилітарної, але й сакральної речі, яка відповідно до цього є невід’ємним елементом низки релігійних обрядів. Підкреслено консолідуючу роль релігійного чинника, який мав надстанове значення, в житті українського соціуму середини XVII ст., а також його провідну роль у світській риториці козацької адміністрації, спрямованій на вирішення поточних завдань козацько-селянсько-міщанського повстання. У зв’язку з цим прослідковано всі випадки використання рушників у текстах Старого і Нового Заповітів, віднайдені свідчення проаналізовано і зіставлено з текстами українських літописних джерел та виявлено майже повний збіг біблійних і літописних сюжетних ліній. На цій підставі зроблено висновок про те, що пов’язування покозаченими рушників було не помилковою і не випадковою, а абсолютно свідомою дією, елементом таємного обряду, розробленого в середовищі місцевого освіченого українського священства та інспірованого до народного середовища з метою його мобілізації до активної збройної боротьби та підтримання високого бойового духу. Частково реконструйовано цей обряд., Using documentary sources and texts of the Holy Scriptures, the article proves the existence of an unusual rite of Cossack initiation in Dubno area during the years of B. Khmelnytsky, which included girding Cossacks with embroidered towels (rushnyks). An attempt is made to clarify the genesis of this custom and its inner essence. It is noted that the key to understanding the problem is the perception of the towel not only in the utilitarian but also in a sacred sense, which is accordingly an integral part of numerous religious rites. The article emphasizes the consolidating role of the religious factor, which had supranational significance in the life of Ukrainian society in the middle of the 17th century, as well as its leading role in the secular rhetoric of the Cossack administration aimed at solving the then problems of the Cossack-peasant-bourgeois uprising. In this regard, all cases of using rushnyks in the texts of the Old and New Testaments are traced; the respective evidence is analyzed and compared with the texts of the Ukrainian chronicle sources; almost a complete coincidence of biblical and chronicle plot lines is revealed. This basis serves for the conclusion that the Cossack tying of rushnyks was not an accidental but a completely conscious action, an element of a secret rite, developed among the local educated Ukrainian clergy and introduced to the community to mobilize people for the active armed struggle and maintain a high fighting spirit. This rite has been partially reconstructed.

Уперше предметом дослідження стала практично невідома в Україні громадська організація українців «Об’єднання Бувших Вояків Українців у Великій Британії» (Association of Ukrainian Former Combatants in Great Britain), зареєстрована в Лондоні у липні 1949 року. Одним із пунктів Cтатуту значилася інформаційна та видавнича діяльність щодо промоції в Західній Європі нерозв’язаного світовою спільнотою українського питання.Різноманітна друкована продукція цієї організації досі не оцифрована, повних комплектів її видань не має жодна книгозбірня України. З огляду на це автор проводив дослідження історії ОБВУ у бібліотеках та архівних колекціях українських громадських організацій у Лондоні під час недавнього наукового стажування у Великій Британії.Постання й багаторічна результативна діяльність Об’єднання Бувших Вояків Українців у Великій Британії стали доказом потреби об’єднання вояків-українців різних армій, які в результаті воєнного лихоліття вимушено опинилися поза межами рідної Батьківщини. На початок 1953 року організація налічувала близько 6000 членів.Першим головою ОБВУ (1949–1953) став сотник Михайло Длябога. Прославився тим, що в першому бою новоутвореної дивізії «Галичина» під Бродами у липні 1944 року зі своїми побратимами прорвав облогу і тим самим врятував життя багатьох українських бійців. На чолі організації пізніше стояли: Михайло Білий-Карпинець, Теодор Кудлик, Богдан Микитин, Святомир Фостун.На початках основний масив друкованої продукції ОБВУ склали циклостильові видання для потреб організації: військово-історичні нариси та лекції і збірники матеріалів з нагоди різних дат історичного календаря.Детально подано змістові, технічні та ідейно-виховні характеристики книжкових видань, що виходили упродовж десятиліть з маркою цієї організації та розповсюджувалися у вільному світі. Йдеться, зокрема, про підготовлену професором В. Кубійовичем «Етнографічну мапу Південно-Західної України (Галичина)», серію спогадів колишніх вояків Першої дивізії Української Національної Армії та нереалізований проект пропам’ятної книги «Табори полонених 1 УД УНА у Великій Британії». В поле обсервації потрапили також три випуски рідкісного на сьогодні «Альманаху ОБВУ»., For the first time, the subject of the study is the Association of Ukrainian Former Combatants in Great Britain, registered in London in July 1949, which is practically unknown in Ukraine. One of the stipulations of its Statute was informational and publishing activity in terms of the promotion of the Ukrainian issue in Western Europe unresolved by the global community.Various printed products of this organization have not yet been digitized, and no book collection in Ukraine has complete sets of its publications. With this in mind, the author conducted a study of the history of AFUS in libraries and archival collections of Ukrainian NGOs in London during his recent research internship in Great Britain.The emergence and many years of effective activity of the Association of Former Ukrainian Soldiers in Great Britain proved the need to unite Ukrainian combatants of different armies, who, as a result of the war turbulence, were forced to find themselves outside their homeland. At the beginning of 1953, the Association had around 6,000 members.The first chairman of the AFUS (1949–1953) was Captain Mykhailo Dliaboha. He became famous for breaking through the siege with his comrades in the first battle of the newly formed ‘Galicia’ division near Brody in July 1944, thus saving the lives of many Ukrainian soldiers. Later, the organization was headed by Mykhailo Bilyi-Karpynets, Teodor Kudlyk, Bohdan Mykytyn, Sviatomyr Fostun.In the beginning, the main array of printed AFUS products were cyclostyle publications for the organization’s needs: military-historical essays, lectures, collections, and materials on various dates of the historical calendar.The semantic, technical, and ideological-educational characteristics of book editions, which had been published for decades under the brand of this organization, and were distributed in the free world, are presented in detail. This relates, in particular, to “Ethnographic Map of Southwestern Ukraine (Galicia)”, prepared by prof. V. Kubiyovych – a series of memoirs of former soldiers of the First Division of the Ukrainian National Army – and an unrealized project of a commemorative book “Prisoner of War Camps of the 1st UD UNA in Great Britain”. Three issues of the now rare AFUS Almanac are also considered.

У статті схарактеризовано стан наукових досліджень історії українсько-польського військово-політичного союзу 1920 р.Досліджено проблеми українсько-польських відносин у 1919–1920 рр., зокрема специфіку перемовин України й Польщі у цей період, основні моменти підготовки та укладання у квітні 1920 р. між Українською Народною Республікою та Річчю Посполитою Варшавського договору. Звернуто увагу на реакцію різних українських і польських політичних сил на підписання пакту «Пілсудський – Петлюра».Реконструйовано суспільно-політичні передумови, основні події українсько-польсько-радянської війни 1920 р. та висвітлено роль у них С. Петлюри та Ю. Пілсудського. Проаналізовано співробітництво України і Польщі в боротьбі проти більшовицької агресії, а також суперечності, які поставали тоді у відносинах двох народів. Виокремлено ставлення двох державних керманичів до подій, що відбувалися в Україні у 1919–1920 рр. Осмислено підсумки українсько-польсько-радянського протистояння для Польщі й України та його вплив на українсько-польське взаєморозуміння надалі.Автор стверджує, що підготовка та підписання пакту «Пілсудський – Петлюра» викликало негативну реакцію з боку більшості українських і польських політичних сил і не було ними підтримано. Нетривалий українсько-польський військово-політичний союз у 1920 р. розпався через низку зовнішньополітичних чинників. Основні з них: негативне ставлення до України з боку Антанти, неоднозначне ставлення до союзу різних політичних партій обох країн, запізнє підписання договору та прагматизм Ю. Пілсудського, який у своїй політиці дотримувався передусім інтересів Польщі й тривалий час покладався на підтримку Антанти.Водночас підписання Варшавської угоди сприяло виходу України на міжнародну арену. Внаслідок цього і співпраці з Польщею українці продовжили збройну боротьбу за свою незалежність проти РСФРР у 1920 р. й разом із Польщею не дали можливості їй просунутися далі в Західну Європу й перенести туди «світову революцію».Підписання Ризького договору в березні 1921 р. та закінчення українсько-польсько-більшовицької війни означало поразку національно-визвольних змагань 1917–1921 рр., The article describes the state of scholarly research of the history of the Ukrainian-Polish Military and Political Alliance of 1920.It studies the problems of Ukrainian-Polish relations in 1919–1920, in particular the specifics of negotiations between Ukraine and Poland during that period, the main moments of preparation and conclusion of the Warsaw Pact between the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Commonwealth in April 1920. Attention is drawn to the reaction of various Ukrainian and Polish political forces to the signing of Pilsudski-Petliura Pact.The sociopolitical preconditions, the main events of the Ukrainian-Polish-Soviet War of 1920 are reconstructed, and the role of S. Petliura and J. Pilsudski in them is highlighted. The cooperation between Ukraine and Poland in the struggle against Bolshevist aggression is analyzed, as well as the contradictions that arose then in the relations between the two peoples. The attitude of the two state leaders towards the events that took place in Ukraine in 1919–1920 is singled out. The results of the Ukrainian-Polish-Soviet confrontation for Poland and Ukraine and its influence on Ukrainian-Polish mutual understanding in the future are comprehended.The author claims that the preparation and signing of the Pilsudski-Petliura Pact provoked a negative reaction from the majority of Ukrainian and Polish political forces and was not supported by them. The short-lived Ukrainian-Polish Military-Political Alliance collapsed in 1920 due to a number of foreign policy factors. The main ones are the Entente’s negative treatment of Ukraine, ambiguous attitude towards the union of different political parties of both countries, late signing of the treaty and pragmatism of J. Pilsudski, who in his policy adhered primarily to the interests of Poland and relied on the Entente for a long time.At the same time, the signing of the Warsaw Pact facilitated Ukraine’s entry into the international arena. As a result of cooperation with Poland, the Ukrainians continued the armed struggle for their independence against the RSFSR in 1920 and, together with Poland, did not allow it to advance further into Western Europe to bring the “world revolution” there.The signing of the Treaty of Riga in March 1921 and the end of the Ukrainian-Polish-Bolshevik War meant the defeat of the national liberation struggle of 1917–1921.

Статтю присвячено ролі «руської» народної мови в релігійному житті українського народу першої половини XVII ст. В основу дослідження покладено бачення згаданої проблеми письменником-полемістом Касіяном Саковичем, котрий виклав свою позицію у вступі до твору «Desiderosus» 1625 р. Актуальність теми полягає у зв’язку націєтворення європейських народів з проникненням національних мов у їхнє релігійне життя й перекладом Біблії.На основі вступу Касіяна Саковича до польського видання книги «Desiderosus», яке він опублікував, установлено підходи автора до визначення ролі «руської мови» в релігійному житті Русі (України та Білорусі). Передусім зроблено загальний огляд «мовної дискусії» XVI – початку XVII ст., пов’язаної з виходом у світ Біблії Франциска Скорини, Заблудівського Євангелія, а також на основі творів Івана Вишенського й Антонія Селяви. Було відзначено, що попит на переклади Св. Письма «руською мовою» в суспільстві існував. Проте представники консервативних кіл православного та унійного духовенства насторожено ставилися до народної мови, яку пов’язували з єресями й замахом на сакральну церковнослов’янську традицію.Звернено увагу на те, що Касіян Сакович з метою релігійного виховання вірних та фахової підготовки духовенства вважав за необхідне перекласти твори Отців Східної Церкви простою народною мовою. Він також порушив питання про глибше ознайомлення православного суспільства з релігійним спадком Римо-Католицької Церкви. Було підкреслено, що визнання необхідності підвищити статус «руської мови» не мало ознак «мовного шовінізму». Касіян Сакович вважав, що релігійне життя в Україні має розвиватися на основі позитивного досвіду християнської культури Сходу та Заходу. Особливо це стосувалося проповідників, якість діяльності котрих була прямо пов’язана з рівнем освіти., The article deals with the role of the “Ruthenian” vernacular language in the religious life of the Ukrainian people in the first half of the 17th century. The study is based on the respective vision of the famous polemicist Cassian Sakowicz and his position declared in the introduction to his work “Desiderosus” (1625). The topic is important due to its relation to the building of European nations with the penetration of national languages into their religious life and translation of the Bible.The introduction to the Polish edition of the book “Desiderosus”, published by Cassian Sakowicz, serves as the basis for describing his approaches to determination of the role of the “Ruthenian” language in the religious life of Rus (Ukraine and Belarus). First of all, there is a general overview of the “language discussion” in the 16th – early 17th century, related to the publication of the Bible by Francysk Skaryna, the Gospel of Zabludov, as well as the works by Ivan Vyshensky and Antin Sielava. It is noted that the society had a need for the translation of the Holy Scripture “into Ruthenian”. However, representatives of the conservative circles of the Orthodox and Uniate clergy were cautious of the vernacular language, which was associated with heresy and an assault against the sacred Church Slavonic tradition.The article draws attention to the fact that Cassian Sakowicz considered it necessary to translate the works by the Eastern Church Fathers into a simple vernacular language for religious education of believers and professional training of the clergy. It is noted that Cassian Sakowicz raised the question of a deeper acquaintance of the Orthodox society with the religious heritage of the Roman Catholic Church. It is emphasized that the recognition of the need to enhance the status of the “Ruthenian” language had no signs of “linguistic chauvinism”. Cassian Sakowicz believed that religious life in Ukraine had to develop relying on the positive experience of both Eastern and Western Christian culture. Therefore, the Orthodox society would require in its spiritual life not only the native language but also other languages of the Church—Slavonic, Polish, Greek, and Latin. This was especially true for preachers, whose work quality was directly related to their level of education.

About the 23rd All-Ukrainian Research and Practical Conference “Ukrainian Studies” in the System of the National Education, Science, and Humanitarian Policy of the State”

The research is dedicated to F. Vovk’s book collection and the Library of the Museum (Cabinet) of Anthropology and Ethnology Named after F. Vovk. The list of problems that help to implement the research objective consists of bibliographic description of rare books from the “Rare books collection with F. Vovk’s name on bookplates, inscriptions, and marginalia” in the Library Fund of the National Museum of Ukrainian History (the object of the study), and its three (sub)collections (subjects of the study); characteristics of the content, chronology, language, and topics of publications with focus on certain copies depending on the role of their content or authors in Ukrainian studies. The author substantiates that the studied collection (171 units) constitutes one of the largest rare books collections in the Library Fund of the National Museum of Ukrainian History and contains fragments of libraries of many prominent scholars. The research provides reasons for the receipt of the fragment of the library of the former Museum (Cabinet) to the National Museum of Ukrainian History in 1936; its future; final discovery by the museum experts in the 2010s and introduction into scientific circulation, as well as into museum communication. Reasonable assumptions about the non-scholarly division of the library of the former Museum (Cabinet) are made, relying on the comparison of the Library Fund of the National Museum of Ukrainian History and the book collection of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. The object of this research is analyzed as the source for ethnology, ethnography, local, and Ukrainian studies. The information from bookplates, inscriptions, and marginalia forms the base for the outlines of the biographies of the authors of publications. Representativeness of the studied ­(sub)collections is determined in comparison with their original content according to the archival sources. Research prospects are set in the context of the mission of bibliographers, historians, and experts in Ukrainian Studies to develop “Professor F. Vovk’s Memory Department”, initiated in the 1920s by his associates and brutally interrupted by the Great Terror.

Until now, the Ukrainian linguistics has claimed that the main substrate for the Ukrainian language is North Iranian / Scythian. This dominant opinion was based on the well-known hypothesis of the Soviet school philologists and, in particular, of the Ossetian linguist Vaso Abaiti (better known as Vasyl Abaev (Abayev)) about the Iranian origin of the Scythian language. The scholar insisted that the Ossetian language descended from the hypothetical Scythian-Sarmatian one, and tried to explain the names of the largest waterways not only of the Black Sea region but also of the entire Ukraine and Eastern Europe using only Iranian-Ossetian words. The author of the article has prepared a number of materials to refute this false claim of modern researchers. In this respect, undoubtedly helpful is a unique artifact, a prehistoric inscription discovered ten years ago in the basement of a temple in the regional center, Zhytomyr. It turned out that the modern Ukrainian vocabulary contains a large number of words whose meanings and sounds are almost identical to the Anatolian glosses – Phrygian, Lydian, Thracian, Lycian A and Lycian B (Milyan), Carian, as well as the preceding languages – Hattic/Hattian and Luwian/Luvian. As evidenced by the lexical material of the Phrygian-Ukrainian dictionary, prepared by the author of the article, most of such related words (full cognates) are observed in these two languages – Phrygian and Ukrainian. Thus, another false linguistic statement is refuted which most closely relates Ancient Greek to Phrygian. It was made by linguists relying on forty Greek words that sound similar to Phrygian.The proposed study provides striking discoveries: more than a half of the Old Phrygian words known today have entered the vocabulary of the Ukrainian language. Why has it been concealed before? It turns out that the researchers have so far compared Phrygian only with Greek, Armenian, Old Macedonian, Albanian; however, for some reason, no one dared call it the closest relative of the Ukrainian language. This might have been prevented by the fact that, by Herodotus’ definition, Phrygian was considered “the most ancient language of the world”., До цього часу в українському мовознавстві переважала думка, що основним субстратом для української мови є північноіранський/скіфський. За основу бралася відома гіпотеза філологів радянської школи і, зокрема, осетинського мовознавця Васо Абайти (більше відомого як Василь Абаєв) про іранське походження мови скіфів. Саме останній, наполягаючи, що осетинська є нащадком гіпотетичної скіфо-сарматської мови, намагався пояснити на­ймення найбільших водних артерій не тільки Причорномор’я, але й усієї України та Східної Європи, залучаючи лише ірано-осетинські слова. Автор статті підготував ряд матеріалів, що спростовують це хибне твердження сучасних дослідників. У цьому плані йому, звичайно, значною мірою допоміг унікальний артефакт – доісторичний напис, виявлений десять років тому в підвалі одного із храмів обласного Житомира. З’ясувалося, в сучасному українському лексиконі є величезна кількість слів, значення та звучання яких майже абсолютно подібні до анатолійських глос – фригійських, лідійських, фракійських, лікійських А та лікійських Б (мілійських), карійських, а також мов їхніх попередників – хатських та лувійських. Як засвідчив лексичний матеріал фригійсько-українського словника, підготовлений автором статті, найбільше таких споріднених слів (повних когнатів) спостерігаємо саме у цих двох мовах – фригійській та українській. Отже, спростовується ще одне хибне твердження лінгвістів, котрі, оперуючи сорока словами, які в грецькій звучать подібно до фригійських, заявляють, що найбільше близька до фригійської мови давньогрецька. У запропонованому дослідженні з’ясовано, що більше половини відомих на сьогодні старо­фригійських слів увійшли до «Словника української мови». Чому про це не повідомлялося раніше? Виявляється, дослідники до цього часу порівнювали з фригійською лише грецьку, вірменську, давньомакедонську, албанську. Проте чомусь ніхто не наважувався назвати її найближчою родичкою … українську. Цьому, можливо, завадило те, що, за визначенням Геродота, фригійська вважалася «найдавнішою мовою світу».

The article analyzes the territorial and geographical vector of Ukrainian studies on the development of foreign language education abroad. For the subject representative study of this problem, the method of the main array covered about 70 dissertations and two dozen monographs, and the selective method – about a hundred articles. Based on the analysis of their names and content, four main territorial and geographical vectors of research of foreign language education abroad are identified:1) regional - in the form of state and political associations and historical and cultural regions of the world; 2) country studies - determines the range and priorities of the study of educational systems in individual countries; 3) Ukrainian studies - reflects the study of foreign language education through the prism of adaptation of its experience in Ukraine. The analysis of scientific studies on the development of foreign language education abroad revealed the narrowness of their territorial and geographical vector.This was reflected in the focus on five to six countries in the Western European region (UK, Germany; France; Sweden, Poland) and the United States. The development of foreign language education in about ten other states has been studied to a lesser extent.Thus, the vast majority of other countries in the world have escaped the attention of Ukrainian scientists.These trends and priorities are due to the European integration course of Ukraine.

The article is devoted to the description of first years of Ukrainian studies in the ancient city of Olbia Pontica. Special attention was paid to the range of problematic issues that formed the main features of modern Ukrainian classical archaeology.

This article attempts to analyze the evolution, current status, and possible prospects for the development of cooperation between Russian and Ukrainian scholars–historians in the context of today’s political realities. The material presented is based on communications made by the authors and their subsequent discussion at the Bureau of the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences, Russian Academy of Sciences, on June 19, 2019. This discussion was connected with the joint events held by historians from the Russian Federation and Ukraine, which took place in 2018 and 2019 in Austria and were attended by the authors of the article. The social significance and relevance of the modern Russian–Ukrainian dialogue between historians and the mutual interest in it shared by scientists of the two countries are substantiated. The Russian–Ukrainian project on the publication of the Chronicle of Samiilo Velichko about events in Southwestern Russia in the 17th century is analyzed, which is undertaken by the Center for Study of the History of Ukraine at St. Petersburg State University and the Institute for the History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU). The current state of Ukrainian studies in Russia is surveyed.

This article is to complete a series of publications aimed to discuss German military operations in Ukraine (from March to early May 1918). This offensive was aimed to expel Bolsheviks from Ukraine and to restore Central Council to power in Kyiv in accordance with the provisions of Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty. At the same time, Germany desperately needed Ukrainian food and raw materials to continue war on the Western front. Modern Ukrainian historiography tends to consider these events using the data obtained either from Soviet publications, where reliable data were substituted by ideological dogmas, or from memoirs, which too often proved to be misleading. Therefore, operations of the German Army were considered as a process perfectly executed according to a single predesigned plan. However, there were several distinctive phases determined by German High Command as political and military goals. Thus, it is important to explore the order of battle of German and Austro-Hungarian forces in Ukraine, and to consider relevant aspects of military operations aimed to expel Bolsheviks from the territory of Ukrainian People’s Republic. Valuable archival data were provided by recent studies of the Austrian scholars V. Dornik and P. Lib, as well as the Polish researcher V. Mȩdrzecki. This article is discussing the final period of Phase Three of the German military operations in Ukraine. 19 German divisions were engaged into the offensive in Donbas, Crimea, and the Black Sea coast. They established control over the entire Ukraine (excluding Crimea, with Ukrainian units forced to abandon the peninsula). The offensive ended in Rostov-on-Don with Germans trying to help Don Cossacks in opposition to Bolsheviks. Finally, hostilities ended in late May. The author provides the analysis of the operation made by the German High Command, as well as evaluated losses of German soldiers, which proved to be considerably lower than those claimed by the Soviet historiography.At that time, German occupation provided the only real chance to preserve Ukrainian statehood, however by making Ukraine a vassal to Germany., У статті розглянуто завершення операції вступу німецьких військ в Україну у березні – на початку травня 1918 року для вигнання більшовиків, відновлення влади уряду Центральної Ради, яка заключила з Німеччиною мирний договір, за яким взяла на себе обов’язки постачати Німеччині продовольство та сировину, що їй конче були необхідні для продовження ведення Першої світової війни. У сучасній українській історіографії події вступу німецьких військ в Україну на запрошення уряду УНР досі розглядаються на основі або радянських досліджень, які не опиралися на достовірні джерела та були значно заідеологізовані, або ж на основі спогадів українських учасників цих подій, які грішать неточністю та суб’єктивізмом в оцінці подій. Особливо не вистачає даних про точні факти проведення німецької операції, яка сприймається як один безперервний процес з планом, створеним на самому початку. Насправді операція мала декілька етапів, на яких німецьке командування ставило різні цілі для своїх військ. Тому важливо для відтворення реальних подій, які відбувалися в Україні протягом 1918 року, дослідити склад німецьких та австро-угорських військ в Україні, особливості проведення операції з вигнання російських більшовиків з території УНР і наступної окупації України із залученням тих архівних матеріалів, які були вивчені австрійськими дослідниками В. Дорніком та П. Лібом і польським істориком В. Менджецьким. Розглядаються дії німецьких військ, чисельність яких саме у цей час зростає до 19 дивізій, які рішучими діями на Донбасі, на узбережжі Чорного моря та в Криму беруть під конт­роль практично всю територію, на яку мала розповсюджуватися влада Центральної Ради (за винятком Криму, до якого українські війська допущені таки не були). Операція закінчилася захопленням Ростова-на-Дону, де німці надали допомогу козакам війська Донського у протистоянні з більшовиками, але бої на деяких ділянках час від часу продовжувалися ще протягом всього травня. Подано аналіз самої операції німецьким командуванням та визначено приблизні втрати німецьких військ, які виявилися зовсім не надто великими, як це подавала радянська історіографія. В цілому ясно, що перебування німецьких військ на території України давало у той час фактично єдину реальну можливість зберегти українську державність, хоча й у вигляді васальної країни під німецьким протекторатом.

This research identifies the scientific novelty of the study of Fedir Vovk’s book collection and libraries of institutions named after him (the object), bookplates and inscriptions with the scientist’s name on editions in Ukrainian libraries and selected museum libraries (the subject). The objective of the research is to collect information about bookplates and inscriptions on books (old printed books, antique books, books of the late 19th – early 20th century) with the scholar’s name to observe the respect of the scientific and museum communities to his contribution to the formation of the modern Ukrainian nation and Ukrainian studies. The historiography and sources of the research (121 rare books of the 19th – early 20th century), studied on “de visu” principle, are systematized and commented on. Attention is paid to Oleksandr Alesho’s book collection, which was presented to the library of the Cabinet of Anthropology and Ethnology named after Fedir Vovk. Some specification of his bookplate and the inscription associated with his name has begun. The French (sub)collection of Vovk’s library is in our focus too, namely some sources of its creation, partial description of its content, and institutions that keep it nowadays. The author publishes book statistics, defines theoretical and empirical research methods as well as challenges of the research: difficulties with investigation of the library and book collections in the funds of the National Museum of Ukrainian History (hereafter – NMUH) and the lack of the card-file catalog in the library of NMUH. The main part of the article is structured in the form of two annexes with commentaries, which include results of historiographical and source studies. Typology of every bookplate is presented, and the list of bookplates and inscriptions with the name of Fedir Vovk is set (23 units). Prospects of the research as a public and historical project are determined.

The new book by L. M. Dems'ka-Budzuliak is devoted to the very important but not well-studied works of Ukrainian neoclassicists about literature. This extensive monograph provides a theoretical comprehension of neoclassicist academic works and also the background of modern Ukrainian studies. The article highlights the activities of national and leading branch libraries in the direction of development of Ukraine’s retrospective national bibliography. General scientific and special methods of cognition have made the methodological basis of the study. The source search and analysis of major publications have been made. A systematic approach has been applied in the study of the research problem as an integral object. The scientific novelty of the research is that it comprehensively studies the implementation of the Ukrainian library repertoire, analyzes the main indexes, determines the contribution of individual bibliographers and institutions. It has been established that in the 1990s – 2000s great importance was attached to comprehending and defining the methodological and theoretical foundations of the formation of a national system of handwritten, archival and book Ukrainian studies, meanwhile bibliographic activity and bibliography of library documents were the defining components of this system. The creation of the Ukrainian bibliographic repertoire is closely connected with the activities of V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine and V. Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. The pedagogical segment of information resources is widely represented in the retrospective bibliography of V. O. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Pedagogical Library of Ukraine, which reflects different types and kinds of rare publications and reveals the contents of pedagogical journals and educational publications. A number of branch indexes (catalogues) have been characterized, highlighting the activities of V. O. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Pedagogical Library of Ukraine in the area of creating a retrospective national bibliography. It has been emphasized that the performance results of the SSPL in the area of branch Ukrainian studies contributed to the popularization of library resources and the implementation of scientific and informational support of educators’ needs.

The stances and actions of the Ukrainian delegation and the proposals of the German and Austro-Hungarian representatives, as well as Kyiv, Berlin, and Vienna officials are indicated. Diplomatic confrontation between the Ukrainian delegates and representatives of German and Bolshevik delegations is outlined. The position of the UPR delegation on the formation of armed units from Ukrainian prisoners of war in Germany and Austria-Hungary is discussed, as well as its opinion on changing the approach towards the course of negotiations. The article indicates the circumstances and reasons for concluding both the treaty itself and the secret protocol to it. The details of the loss of the Ukrainian copy of the secret protocol to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk are clarified. The role of the Head of the Ukrainian delegation O. Sevriuk in the negotiations is noted. Changes in the parties’ positions regarding the invitations of German and Austro-Hungarian troops to Ukraine are conditioned. The rationale for the actions of the UPR delegation in its reporting to the Ukrainian Central Council is elucidated. It is revealed that de facto new Ukrainian-German diplomatic relations began in December 1917 and were then of a “separative” nature, and de jure were legalized on February 9, 1918 by the Peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. This treaty became the first peace agreement of World War I, while Germany and its allies (Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey) recognized the Ukrainian People’s Republic as a sovereign state.

Історична традиція Гетьманщини у XVІІІ ст., особливо у другій його половині, коли політичні інституції Козацької держави системно знищувалися російським централізмом, але водночас у свідомості її політичної та інтелектуальної еліти починають формуватися якісно нові виміри української етнокультурної окремішності, позначена також становленням інтересу до феномену усної української словесності. Засадничо непідконтрольний російському абсолютизмові український фольклор у дискурсивному «горизонті» епохи починає вияскравлюватися тим «великим Іншим», реальність якого засвідчувала потенційну можливість ствердження світоглядовості українського антиімперського спротиву. Важливим етапом на цьому шляху окреслився метатекст «козацького літописання», у регістрах якого, суттєво відкоригованих художньою мисленнєвістю народної думи та історичної пісні, стверджувалася засадничо опозиційна до москвоцентричної інтелектуальна парадигма. Становлення на схилку козацької епохи наукового українознавства як цілокупного комплексу напрямних системного пізнання України та українського світу (і водночас – форми соціальної присутності національної ідеї) дало можливість концептуалізувати ту систему світоглядових, аналітичних та естетичних координат, у просторі якої феномен усної словесності здобувався на перспективу свого адекватного осмислення. Розгортання українознавчих студій посилило інтерес інтелектуальної еліти до творчості живою народною мовою (О. Любасевич), наслідком чого «Енеїдою» І. Котляревського розпочинається новий етап розвитку національної культури та літератури. Окреслений контекст зумовив і постання етапної для свого часу праці Я. Марковича «Записки о Малороссии, ея жителях и произведениях» (1798), на сторінках якої вперше в українській мислительній традиції усна словесність розглядається як теоретично значущий атрибут національного буття. Максимовичем інтелектуальну революцію і цілісне формування української національно-визвольної ідеології., The historical tradition of Hetmanate in the 18th century, especially its second half, when the political institutions of the Cossack state were systematically ruined by Russian centralism along with the formation of the qualitatively new dimensions of the Ukrainian ethnocultural singularity in the consciousness of its political and intellectual elite, is also determined by the evolving interest in the phenomenon of the Ukrainian folklore. This phenomenon, uncontrolled in its core by the Russian absolutism, began to stand out in the discourse of the era as the “great Other”, whose reality proved the potential possibility to establish the worldview of the Ukrainian anti-imperial opposition. The metatext of the “Cossack chronicle” became an important stage in this process; its records, substantially corrected by the artistic vision of the folk duma and historical song, established the intellectual paradigm fundamentally oppositional to the Moscow-centric one.The establishment of the scientific Ukrainian studies in the declining years of the Cossack era as an integral complex of directions for system learning of Ukraine and the Ukrainian world (as well as a form of social presence of the national idea) allowed conceptualization of this worldview system, its analytical and aesthetic coordinates, whose space shaped the folklore phenomenon with the prospect for its adequate comprehension. The unfolding of the Ukrainian studies intensified the interest of the intellectual elite in the creative production by means of the real vernacular language (O. Lubasevych) resulting in the new stage of the national cultural and literary development – “Eneida” by I. Kotliarevskyi. The defined context caused the emergence of the then creative landmark by Ya. Markovych “Notes on Little Russia, Its Citizens, and Creative Works” (1798), which, for the first time in the Ukrainian cogitative tradition, considered folklore as a theoretically significant attribute of national being. This served as the ground for the realization of the ideological complex, which provided a possibility for the intellectual revolution started by M. Maksymovych and an integral formation of the Ukrainian National Liberation War in the first third of the 19th century.

У статті окреслено головні положення псевдонаукових гіпотез походження українців та наведено їх критичний аналіз, відображений у працях сучасних вітчизняних дослідників. Виявлено, що після відновлення української державності в кінці ХХ ст. посилився інтерес громадськості до етногенетичної проблематики та з’явилося безліч теорій щодо походження українців. З’ясовано, що, за Ю. Шиловим, українська етногенетична модель має такий вигляд: араттійці – трипільці – арійці – слов’яни – руси – українці; згідно з поглядами Ю. Канигіна, українці – прямі нащадки аріїв, «народ Божий», про яких написано у Біблії і яким належить особлива месіанська роль; за концепцією І. Каганця, український народ має три окремих етноси, які послідовно змінювали один одного, а саме – етноси антів, русичів і козаків (до якого відносяться всі сучасні українці); згідно з поглядами П. Кононенка, працивілізацією українців була трипільська, а праукраїнський етнос остаточно сформувався у процесі синтезу слов’янської матриці та ядранських, арменоїдних, нордичних домішок на ґрунті антсько-склавинських державних об’єднань; відповідно до концепції С. Доведено, що переважна більшість цих дослідників нехтує науковим обґрунтуванням власних концепцій, цим самим вводячи в оману не лише пересічних українців, а й цілковито дискредитуючи українську науку як у європейському, так і у світовому науковому дискурсі., The article outlines the main stipulations of pseudoscientific hypotheses of the Ukrainians’ origin and presents their critical analysis, reflected in the works of modern domestic researchers. It is revealed that the restoration of Ukrainian statehood at the end of the 20th century increased public interest in ethnogenetic issues and led to the emergence of multiple theories on the origin of Ukrainians. It is found that according to Yu. Shylov, the Ukrainian ethnogenetic model has the following form: Arattians – Trypillians – Aryans – Slavs – the Rus’ people – Ukrainians. According to the views of Yu. Kanyhin, Ukrainians are the direct descendants of Aryans, the “people of God”, mentioned in the Bible and endowed with a special messianic role. The concept of I. Kahanets states that the Ukrainian people have three separate ethnic groups, which were successively changing each other, namely the Antes, the Rus’ people, and Cossacks (to whom all modern Ukrainians belong). According to P. Kononenko’s views, the Trypillian civilization was the Ukrainian civilization, and the great-Ukrainian ethnos was finally formed on the basis of the Antes-Sclaveni state associations by the synthesis of the Slavic matrix and the Dinaric, Armenoid, Nordic impurities. According to the concept of S. Plachynda, the Ukrainian nation was born in the Palaeolithic, finally formed in the Neolithic, and had subsequently conquered almost all of Eurasia. According to V. Bebyk, the chain of formation and transformation of the Ukrainian ethnic group looks as following: Teukrs – Scythians – Aryans – Ukrainians. It is shown that the contemporary representatives of quasi-theories of the Ukrainians’ prehistoric origin are united by the idea of the exclusiveness of the Ukrainian ethnogenesis and the messianism of the Ukrainian people. It is proved that the overwhelming majority of these researchers neglect the scientific substantiation of their own concepts, thus misleading not only ordinary Ukrainians but also completely discrediting Ukrainian science in both European and world scientific discourses.

This essay surveys material published between 1950 and 2016 by Canadian scholars who studied Ukrainian church history and theology. Particular attention is paid to works produced by members of the Eastern-rite Redemptorist and Basilian religious orders and by scholars at St. Andrew’s College and the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, the University of Toronto and the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto, the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta, and the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies in Ottawa.

У статті здійснено аналіз специфічних рис зображення народів на українських іконах Страшного суду (XV–XVIII ст.).Предметом дослідження є джерельна інформація ікони, зокрема у контекстах впливу на образ епохи, а також верифікація змісту зображення на іконі з історичними подіями.Мета дослідження полягає в окресленні формування есхатологічних мотивів, а також основних історичних особливостей зображення представників різних народів і релігій на українських іконах Страшного суду в період ХV–ХVІІІ ст. Це допоможе прослідкувати зміну ставлення до тих чи інших етнічних груп титульного етносу України. Визначені особливості есхатології як системи уявлень про кінець світу. Розглянуті історичні витоки зображень Страшного суду на іконах (фресках). Охарактеризовані перші т. зв. «страшносудні» зображення у церквах на території України. Визначена послідовність і логіка формування іконографії сюжету Страшного суду. Прослідковано історичну еволюцію українських «страшносудних» ікон. Виявлені витоки ідеї розподілу представників народів на праведників і грішників. Досліджено розміщення на іконах Страшного суду представників народів світу, які очікують на Божий суд, а також проаналізовано їх перелік.Таким чином, ікони Страшного суду відображають тогочасні реалії життя: міжконфесійні відносини, загострення релігійних проблем, а також поширеність тих чи інших етнічних груп на території України. Зразки із зображенням Страшного суду – ікони, мозаїки, фрески – давали можливість тогочасній людині, а також нашим сучасникам виразно уявити момент зустрічі з Богом, вдатися до роздумів про необхідність підготовки до неї. Але водночас це був і засіб зашифрованого послання з інформацією про тих, хто сприймались як негативні образи, але про що складно було заявити відкрито і при цьому уникнути покарання., The article provides the analysis of specific features of depicting people in the Ukrainian icons of the Last Judgment (15th–18th centuries). The subject of the study is the information source of the icon, particularly in the context of impact on the image of the era, as well as the verification of the image content of the icon with historical events. The objective of the study is to outline the formation of eschatological motifs, as well as the main historical features of depicting different peoples and religions in the Ukrainian icons of the Last Judgment during the period of the 15th–18th centuries. This will help follow changes in the attitude towards certain ethnic groups of the Ukrainian titular ethnos.Features of the eschatology as a system of ideas of the end of the world are defined. Historical sources of depicting the Last Judgment in icons (frescoes) are considered. The first images of the Last Judgment in Ukrainian churches are characterized. The sequence and logic of forming the iconography of the eschatological plot are defined. Historical evolution of the Ukrainian so-called eschatological icons is observed. The article also reveals the origins of the idea for dividing people into righteous persons and sinners, studies the distribution and the list of different nations’ representatives in the icons of the Last Judgment, who expect the God’s trial.Thus, the eschatological icons reflect the reality of that time: interfaith relations, aggravation of religious problems, as well as the prevalence of certain ethnic groups in Ukraine. Samples with the image of the Last Judgment – icons, mosaics, frescoes – allowed the medieval person, as well as our contemporaries, to lucidly visualize the moment of meeting God and to think about the need to prepare for it. However, at the same time, it was a sort of encrypted message, hard to reveal without being punished, about those who were perceived as negative characters.

Часопис «Наше життя» орієнтується на жіночу аудиторію, висвітлюючи проблеми збереження етнічної ідентичності, професійне зростання жіноцтва та повсякденні турботи. Ці матеріали є віддзеркаленням актуальних тем української громади у світі, ролі й статусу жінки у родині, на роботі, у суспільстві, гастрономічних практик та кулінарних тенденцій. Окремо окреслено питання ролі обрядових страв у сучасному світі американців українського походження та можливості української кухні бути гастрономічною візитівкою українців., The article examines the culinary section in Nashe Zhyttia (Our Life) magazine published by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America from 1944 to 2016, as well as other materials of the magazine (e.g., opinion pieces, travel articles, memoirs, letters to the editor), all of which, in one way or another, relate to food and the culinary culture of Americans with the Ukrainian roots. Nashe Zhyttia magazine targets the female audience, focusing on preserving national identity, professional development of women, and current issues. These materials reflect topical concerns of the global Ukrainian community; the role and status of the woman in a family, at her workplace, and in the society; dietary habits and culinary innovations. It uncovers the vital role of the national cuisine in preserving and promoting the ethnic identity in a multicultural setting. It brings to light the development of the Ukrainian cuisine in the US society (e.g., cultural, ethnic, economic, and environmental). A careful study of the culinary articles helps understand the pressing issues of preserving, adjusting, and developing Ukrainian cuisine in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. It is established that awareness of the Ukrainian culinary traditions, knowledge of the ritual dishes recipes have served for decades as a means of preserving ethnic cohesion and creating a sense of belonging to the Ukrainian community. According to the research, local American food, national holidays, culinary fashion, and the different systems of weights and measures existing in the US and Ukraine affected the culinary traditions of Americans of Ukrainian descent, impacting the development of Ukrainian cuisine in America. The organizational activities of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America helped elucidate changes in the culinary behavior, views on wholesome food and junk food, dinner etiquette and hosting. A separate discussion is devoted to the subject of ritual dishes and their importance in the lives of contemporary Ukrainian Americans, as well as the potential of the Ukrainian cuisine to serve as a Ukrainian trademark.

У статті наголошується, що один із головних викликів, які постали перед Україною після здобуття незалежності, і до сьогодні не втратив актуальності – це питання пошуку національної ідентичності. Українська ідентичність є визначальним підґрунтям становлення демократичних основ життя суспільства та української національної держави. В умовах глобальних викликів 2020 року питання утвердження української ідентичності ще більше актуалізується насамперед у контексті національної безпеки.Формування загальнонаціональної ідентичності є чинником національної безпеки України. Забезпечення національної безпеки особливо актуалізувалося в умовах тих змін і викликів, які виникли в епоху глобалізації. Нові виклики у сфері національної безпеки насамперед пов’язані з кризовими явищами у світовій економіці, епідемією коронавірусної хвороби, посиленням небезпеки виникнення надзвичайних ситуацій природного та техногенного характеру. Акцентується увага на тому, що у новій Стратегії національної безпеки України (2020) йдеться про протидію деструктивній пропаганді і про необхідність розвитку української культури як основи консолідації української нації та зміцнення її ідентичності.Аналізуються найбільші виклики 2020 року: COVID-19, криза в системі української освіти та демографічна криза. Поширення коронавірусної інфекції перетворилося на масштабну, реальну глобальну та одночасно національну загрозу безпеці України. Зазначається, що у сучасних умовах українська освіта не відповідає ані сучасним запитам з боку особистості та суспільства, ані потребам економіки, ані світовим тенденціям. Ukrainian identity is the defining basis for the formation of democratic foundations of the society and the Ukrainian nation-state. In the context of the global challenges of 2020, the issue of establishing Ukrainian identity is even more relevant, primarily in the context of national security.Formation of the national identity is a factor in the national security of Ukraine. Ensuring national security has become especially important in the context of global changes and challenges that have arisen in the globalization era. New challenges in the field of national security are primarily related to the crisis in the world economy, the epidemic of coronavirus, increased risk of emergencies of natural and man-made nature. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the new National Security Strategy of Ukraine (2020) deals with counteracting destructive propaganda and the need to develop Ukrainian culture as a basis for consolidating the Ukrainian nation and strengthening its identity.The article analyzes the biggest challenges of 2020: COVID-19, the crisis in the Ukrainian education system, and the demographic crisis. The spread of coronavirus infection has become a large-scale, real global, and at the same time a national threat to Ukraine’s security. It is noted that in modern conditions, Ukrainian education doesn’t meet the modern demands of the individual and society, either the needs of the economy or global trends. The current education system in Ukraine doesn’t take into account today’s challenges, the most significant of which are the coronavirus epidemic and Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. Demographic trends in modern Ukraine can lead to a considerable reduction in the number of Ukrainians and the population of the country by foreign cultural immigrants, who, in turn, will create a challenge to statehood and identity.

The article deals with the essence of Ukrainian ethnic, national and ethnocultural processes and their influence on the development of the Ukrainian ethnocultural space as an object of Ukrainian studies. Ethnic processes have been found to be sequential changes that have occurred and will occur with the Ukrainian people throughout their development and existence as a self-sufficient ethnic community, and are directly related to the ethnogenesis of Ukrainians. It is proved that nation-building processes are complex transformations that occur both in a regular order (evolutionary) and abrupt (revolutionary) and contribute to the formation of a nation, the highest form of political structuring of the ethnic group and its further development and self-organization, which eventually lead to political emergence. nation, and the creation of Ukrainian civil society. It is shown, that the Ukrainian ethno-cultural processes is a process of a long-term historical development, in which Ukrainians created on the territories of their existence an ethno-cultural space based on the common origin and territories of Ukrainians, the existence of traditional Ukrainian culture, the intriduction of the Christian faith. It was pointed out that the Ukrainian ethnocultural space includes a peculiar and unique complex of material and spiritual culture of the Ukrainian people created during a long time, and acquired originality and perfection. Eight “conflicting points” in Ukrainian ethnocultural development have been determined. The synergistic interaction of ethnic, state-forming, nation-forming and ethno-cultural processes contributed to the long-time consistent development of the Ukrainians from a small ethnic community lived in the Middle Dnieper as their core trerritiry to the modern nation whose representatves are living on different continents.

The article deals with aspects of the interconnection of the phenomena of social trauma and social conflict, especially in the context of modern Ukrainian society, as well as in the context of the problems of Ukrainian studies discourse. The authors note the extreme importance of the phenomenon of social trauma in the state of health, in the vital program of the individual, in the collective self-identification of social groups, in particular of nations, and the problems and specifics of the manifestation of social trauma in philosophical and sociological sciences. Social trauma is capable to influence the personality's understanding of the meaning of its existence, the interpretation of the direction of development of social processes, the content of interpersonal and intergroup relations in the society. As a result of the defeat of one of the parties of a social conflict, the trauma itself can turn into a conflict factor in the social organism. The authors emphasize the diverse impact of social trauma on the emergence and course of social conflicts in interpersonal and intergroup spheres in the history and contemporary realities of Ukrainian society. It is emphasized that social trauma can be caused not only by real but also by fictional events, which can also cause social conflicts. The article emphasizes the extremely important role of the value positions of the subjects of social conflict in the ranking of traumatic events in the Convention of Ukrainian Studies, shows the influence of these positions on the interethnic and interclass relations in Ukraine. The peculiarities of the connection of social trauma with social conflicts in the life of the modern Ukrainian society in the post-truth situation are also analyzed. The authors emphasize that provoking social conflict by means of creating a post-truth situation if post-truth speculates on real or imagined social trauma is especially dangerous for the society. An ongoing social conflict will be deep and lasting. The manipulation of historical facts by placing them in a post-truth situation is illustrated in the article by facts from the sphere of hybrid warfare conducted by the Russian Federation in the eastern territories of Ukraine. The article explores several aspects of the impact of social trauma on social conflicts in the context of anomie in the spiritual life of the Ukrainian society.

The article deals with the development of Ukrainian studies in museums of Naddnipprianska Ukraine during the imperial period. At the time, a rather wide museum network worked here. Museums were created and operated at various organizations - universities and other educational institutions; scientific institutions; self-government bodies, etc. The lack of the central imperial power’s museum policy was typical. This led to the fact, that museum institutions were often operated under conditions of insufficient funding and enough government support. Russia's imperial policy towards the Ukrainian national movement in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was aimed at its restriction and prohibition. Any manifestation of official Ukrainophile activity should be controlled and restricted. At the same time, intelligentsia, the Ukrainian national movement activists, took an active part in the creation and follow-up of museum institutions. On the other hand, the Ukrainian national movement activists found an opportunity to actively use their work in cultural and educational institutions, including museums, as well as to cooperate with them for the purpose of research in the field of Ukrainian studies. In addition, collections of museum facilities could be used in research in the relevant field. Accumulation of Ukrainian studies was an important factor in national processes, the implementation of the "Ukrainian project". The article highlights Ukrainian studies conducted in some museums in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Chernihiv. These museums contained collections, dedicated to Ukrainian ethnography, archeology and history. These museums, thanks to the position of their employees, collected and systematized collections on the history and culture of Ukraine, published scientific products on the basis of their collections.

З урахуванням новітніх праць з історіософії та методології гуманітаристики у статті з’ясовуються об’єктивна необхідність, мотиви, сутність, особливості та наслідки соціокультурного повороту в українознавстві. Herder, O. Danylevskyi, H. Mirabeau, A. Toynbee, S. Huntington, O. Spengler, K. Jaspers, etc., synergetics and interdisciplinarity. Sociocultural interpretation of the historical process is regarded as an alternative to Marxist monism and the party-class approach towards culture. The emphasis is laid on the cultural traditions of Ukrainian as an integrative system of knowledge about Ukraine and Ukrainians, introduced in the works by V. Antonoyych, M. Hrushevsky, M. Kostomarov, P. Kulish, V. Lypynskyi, I. Lysiak-Rudnytskyi, I. Ohiienko, I. Franko, D. Chyzhevskyi, S. Shlemkevych, and others; shows the value of its powerful cognitive potential for further study of history, content, and ideological bases of culture and education, overcoming and prevention of the negative consequences caused by social communization and postmodern mass culture.The article reveals the interaction of sociocultural turn with the civilizational paradigm and the anthropologism of Ukrainian studies as prerequisites for affirmation of human-centrism and further integration into the global scientific and informational space. At the epicenter of the newest Ukrainian studies by V. Andrushchenko, L. Huberskyi, V. Horskyi, P. Kononenko, V. Krysachenko, M. Popovych, O. Rafalskyi, V. Sheik, M. Yurii, and others is a Ukrainian as the highest value and the immediate carrier of national and civilizational identities of the society, as well as an algorithm of interaction between people, culture and society as a system of values, moral and ethical norms, and mentality. The study analyzes new challenges facing Ukrainian studies, their intellectual potential against the background of globalization, the prolonged military and hybrid aggression of Putin’s Russia against Ukraine, activation of the imperial paradigm of the “Russian World”, Kremlin scientists’ efforts to deny the distinctiveness of the Ukrainian people and impose manipulative myths about the so-called “common history” and “artificiality” of the Ukrainian statehood.

On the basis of previously unknown documents, the author researches the course of the military operation of the Northern Group of the UPR Armed Forces against the Red Army units in Korosten region in March 1919. The relevance of the study is determined by the complete lack of coverage of the Korosten operation in historical literature, although the successful acquisition of Korosten by Ukrainian troops was the first significant military success of the UPR Army during its second war with the Soviet Russia (1918–1920). The publication is based on the documents of the General Staff of the UPR Army, which are currently stored in the funds of the Central State Archives of Supreme Bodies of Power and Government of Ukraine (Kyiv, Ukraine), as well as materials of the Headquarters of the Ukrainian Soviet Front stored in the Russian State Military Archives (Moscow, Russia). The vast majority of these archival documents are introduced to scientific circulation for the first time. The author highlights the goals and tasks which the Ukrainian Command sought to achieve during the operation; determines the ratio of the forces of the belligerents; analyzes the composition and number of forces involved on both sides; reveals the main stages of the military operation on the acquisition of Korosten in March 1919, the role of the units and squads of the UPR Army during the course of the seizure of the town. The author reconstructs in details the course of the fighting crowned with the victory of the Ukrainian weapon; determines the place of these events in the strategic line of the Ukrainian Command; shows their influence on the further course of the military operations. It is emphasized that the successful implementation of the Korosten operation was of extreme strategic importance, providing the Ukrainian Army with the opportunity to avoid the invasion from the north and deploy an active offensive operation in the eastern direction at the same time. The victory of Korosten in March 1919 not only allowed the Ukrainian troops to intercept the strategic initiative but also became the first step towards organizing a general counter-offensive by the UPR Army against Soviet troops in the Right-Bank Ukraine in the spring of 1919., На підставі невідомих раніше документів висвітлено перебіг військової операції Північної групи армії УНР проти з’єднань Червоної армії у районі Коростеня в березні 1919 р. Актуальність дослідження зумовлена цілковитою невисвітленістю коростенської операції в історичній літературі, хоча успішне здобуття українськими військами Коростеня стало першим значним військовим успіхом армії УНР в ході другої війни з Радянською Росією (1918–1920 рр.). Основу джерельної бази публікації склали документи Генерального штабу армії УНР, що зберігаються нині у фондах Центрального державного архіву вищих органів влади та управління України (Київ, Україна), а також матеріали штабу Українського радянського фронту, які знаходяться в Російському державному військовому архіві (Москва, Росія). Переважна більшість використаних у роботі над публікацією архівних документів вводяться до наукового обігу вперше. Автором визначено цілі й завдання, яких прагнуло досягти українське командування в ході здійснення операції. Розкрито співвідношення сил ворогуючих сторін, визначено склад і кількість задіяних з обох сторін військових сил. Розкрито основні етапи військової операції зі здобуття Коростеня в березні 1919 р., висвітлено роль частин і з’єднань армії УНР в ході захоплення міста. Докладно реконструйовано перебіг бойових дій, що завершилися перемогою української зброї. Визначено місце цих подій у стратегічних планах українського командування й показано їхній вплив на подальше розгортання військових операцій. Підкреслено, що успішне здійснення армією УНР коростенської операції мало надзвичайне стратегічне значення, оскільки забезпечувало запілля українських військ від вторгнення з півночі й водночас давало змогу українській армії розгорнути активну наступальну операцію на схід. Перемога під Коростенем у березні 1919 р. не лише дала змогу українським військам перехопити стратегічну ініціативу, але й стала першим кроком на шляху до організації загального контрнаступу армії УНР проти радянських військ на Правобережній Україні навесні 1919 р.
