Public concern over environmental issues such as ecosystem degradation is high. However, restoring coupled human-natural systems requires integration across many science, technology, engineering, management, and governance topics that are presently fragmented. Here, we synthesized 544 peer-reviewed articles published through September 2020 on the desiccation and nascent recovery of Lake Urmia in northwest Iran. We answered nine questions of scientific and popular interest about causes, impacts, stabilization, recovery, and next steps. We find: (1) Expansion of irrigated agriculture, dam construction, and mismanagement impacted the lake more than temperature increases and precipitation decreases. (2) Aerosols from Lake Urmia's exposed lakebed are negatively impacting human health. (3) Researchers disagree on how a new causeway breach will impact salinity, evaporation, and ecosystems in the lake's north and south arms. (4) Most researchers tried to restore to a single, uniform, government specified lake level of 1274.1 m intended to recover Artemia. (5) The Iranian government motivated and funded a large and growing body of lake research. (6) Ecological and limnological studies mostly focused on salinity, Artemia, and Flamingos. (7) Few studies shared data, and only three studies reported engagement with stakeholders or managers. (8) Researchers focused on an integration pathway of climate downscaling, reservoirs, agricultural water releases, and lake level. (9) Numerous suggestions to improve farmer livelihoods and governance require implementation. We see an overarching next step for lake recovery is to couple human and natural system components. Examples include: (a) describe and monitor the system food webs, hydrologic, and human components; (b) adapt management to monitored conditions such as lake level, lake evaporation, lake salinity, and migratory bird populations; (c) improve livelihoods for poor, chronically stressed farmers beyond agriculture; (d) manage for diverse ecosystem services and lake levels; (e) engage all segments of society; (f) integrate across restoration topics while building capacity to share data, models, and code; and (g) cultivate longer-term two-way exchanges and public support. Estuaries, in particular freshwater estuaries, provide valuable economic, social, and ecological services, but their ecosystems are often heavily stressed. Located in the Laurentian Great Lakes basin, Green Bay is a large freshwater estuary and a prominent example of a degraded ecosystem due to intensive human interventions and rapid development. Excessive amounts of contaminants and nutrients were discharged to the bay by inflowing tributaries for almost half a century, while in contrast Green Bay's seasonal‐, morphological‐, and physically‐restricted mixing is unable to export a significant portion of those materials out of the bay, that is, Green Bay behaves as an efficient retention basin for the Lake Michigan. Consequently, several environmental and public health‐related issues have risen in Green Bay and turned the lower bay into an area of environmental concern since the 1980s. To address these challenges, restoration programs were developed, including the development of monitoring programs, scientific research, and remedial action plans. There is a consensus that accelerated loading rates of contaminated and nutrient‐rich sediments are a major driver of the environmental crisis in the bay, yet the fate and transport patterns of Green Bay sediments are not clearly understood. While field observations in Green Bay are season‐limited and costly, advanced computing techniques provided opportunities to refine our understanding of sediment dynamics in this estuarine system. This review of existing knowledge on Green Bay sediment processes can help to better understand the interplay between sediments, and physical/biogeochemical activities in estuarine systems and contributes conceptually to the restoration of degraded aquatic ecosystems. One of the largest freshwater estuarine systems on Earth, Green Bay receives freshwater runoff from its land watershed and cold-water intrusions from Lake Michigan. Southern Green Bay is a designated area of concern (AOC) due to ecosystem degradation, contaminated sediments, and poor water quality. Successful restoration of aquatic systems requires a clear understanding of their circulation and thermal regimes. Using a state-of-the-art numerical ocean model, this study examines the effect of variability in tributary inflows and the related lake intrusions on the circulation and thermal regime in Green Bay and on the mass and heat fluxes between lower- and upper–Green Bay areas. Our findings indicate that tributaries influence the circulation and thermal regime, locally and throughout the bay, and that the impact is more significant in hydrologically wet years. Model simulations showed evidence of small net transport out of lower Green Bay. This analysis of the simultaneous effects of tributary flows and lake intrusions in Green Bay can contribute to understanding the dynamics of freshwater estuaries and improve the planning of future restoration projects. Waterbodies (natural lakes and reservoirs) are a critical part of a watershed's ecological and hydrological balance, and in many cases dictate the downstream river flows either through natural attenuation or through managed controls. Investigating waterbody dynamics relies primarily on understanding their morphology and geophysical characteristics that are primarily defined by bathymetry. Bathymetric conditions define stage-storage relationships and circulation/transport processes in waterbodies. Yet many studies oversimplify these mechanisms due to unavailability of the bathymetric data. We developed a novel GLObal Bathymetric (GLOBathy) dataset of 1.4+ million waterbodies to align with the well-established global dataset, HydroLAKES. GLOBathy uses a GIS-based framework to generate bathymetric maps based on the waterbody maximum depth estimates and HydroLAKES geometric/geophysical attributes of the waterbodies. The maximum depth estimates are validated at 1,503 waterbodies, making use of several observed data sources. We also provide estimations for head-Area-Volume (h-A-V) relationships of the HydroLAKES waterbodies, driven from the bathymetric maps of the GLOBathy dataset. The h-A-V relationships provide essential information for water balance and hydrological studies of global waterbody systems. Understanding the climatic and direct human drivers of abrupt drying of lakes in many parts of the world is a high research priority, particularly for water resources management and restoration. Lake Urmia, a shallow endemic lake in north-west Iran and one of the major saltwater bodies on earth, has undergone a dramatic decline in its water level (WL) in the past decades, resulting in about 80% of loss in the lake's water content. Different explanations have been discussed regarding the primary cause of this WL decline, including climate change, and regional human-driven land- and water-use changes. This paper reports a comprehensive study of the possible primary drivers of the lake's desiccation. Using classical exploratory statistical methods, the analysis accounts for the relationships between climate change (precipitation P, temperature T), land-surface and hydrological evolution (soil moisture SM, and WL), and vegetation cover (VC) change in the region. The latter includes human-driven changes of irrigation and expansion of agricultural lands. Observations over the period 1981-2015 indicate that the observed variability in P, T, and SM cannot explain the sharp decline in the lake WL since 2000. Instead, land-surface analysis shows VC was nearly doubled after 2000 in the Lake Urmia watershed, indicating that the WL decline is mainly associated with human-driven agricultural increase of VC. The expansion of agricultural activities in the watershed has led to increasing transpiration and hence, total evapotranspiration, decreasing the runoff during the increase in VC (inherently including irrigation, storage, and water diversion). Our results are consistent with similar cases around the world identifying human activities and interventions as the main driver of hydrologic changes, while climate change will likely increasingly contribute to such changes and their impacts in the future.
