In the cultivation of leafy vegetables, it is common to apply high amounts of nitrogen fertilizer. The imbalance between the absorption and the use of nitrogen (N) by the plant increases the nitrate content and decreases the quality of the vegetables because nitrate has a strong association with compounds harmful to human health. On the other hand, there is a lack of information on how N dose in intercropping, in order to improve yield, affects the quality (nitrate content) of vegetables. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the nitrate content of intercropped lettuce and rocket, with nitrate content acting as a function of the nitrogen dose applied to these crops. The experiment was carried out at UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, from September to December 2006. The experimental design was a complete randomized block design with four replications. The treatments were arranged in a 4 × 4 + 2 factorial scheme, with four varying concentrations of N each for lettuce and rocket (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg ha-1 of N), plus two treatments corresponding to lettuce and rocket monocrops. Nitrate content in lettuce under intercropping is 42% less compared to that in the monocrop. Increasing nitrogen concentrations increased nitrate levels for lettuce and rocket under intercropping; however, these levels are below those found for their respective monocrops. RESUMO No cultivo de hortaliças folhosas é comum a aplicação de elevadas quantidades de fertilizante nitrogenado. O desequilíbrio entre a absorção e o uso do nitrogênio (N) pela planta eleva o teor de nitrato e diminui a qualidade das hortaliças, pois tem forte associação com compostos prejudiciais à saúde humana. Por outro lado, há falta de informação para dose de N em cultivos consorciados com vistas à obtenção de boa produtividade e como isso impacta a qualidade (teor de nitrato) das hortaliças. Sendo assim, o objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o teor de nitrato na alface e na rúcula, em função da dose de nitrogênio aplicada às culturas em cultivo consorciado. O experimento foi conduzido na UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, de setembro a dezembro de 2006. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 + 2. Os tratamentos resultaram da combinação de quatro doses de N para a alface (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1 de N) e quatro doses de N para a rúcula (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1 de N), mais dois tratamentos adicionais correspondentes às monoculturas de alface e rúcula. O teor de nitrato na cultura da alface em consórcio reduziu 42% quando comparado à monocultura. O aumento das doses de nitrogênio, para ambas as culturas em consórcio, resulta em aumento nos teores de nitrato para alface e rúcula; porém, abaixo dos encontrados para suas respectivas monoculturas.

Success in vegetables production is closely linked to the quality of seedlings, using substrates in placeof the soil in the formation of seedlings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of lettuce and arugula seedlings using substrates produced with vermicompost along with sawdust and rice husks as conditioning agents. Two experiments were carried in Vilhena, Rondônia, using a completely randomized design, in a 3x2 factorial scheme with seven replicates, corresponding to three substrates and two cultivars, for both lettuce and arugula. The proportion of the material was 1: 3 of the total volume of soil, of poultry manure and conditioning agent, using the earthworm Californian Redworm (Eisenia foetida). For the cultivars, both lettuce and arugula, the height of seedlings, the diameter of the colon, dry mass of shoot, roots, and total were evaluated. There was no significant difference between the evaluated treatments in relation to the dry mass of the roots of Crespa cultivar lettuce, but for the American cultivar, the treatments using vermicompost with conditioning agent the sawdust or rice husk were superior to the commercial substrate in relation to dry mass of the roots. Among the cultivars of the arugula, no significant difference was observed between the treatments on the variables evaluated. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that substrates produced from vermicompost with sawdust and rice husks as conditioning agents can replace the commercial substrate during the production of lettuce and arugula. Uma das razões para obter sucesso na horticultura é a produção de mudas de qualidade, utilizando substratos em substituição do solo na formação de mudas. Desse modo, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o desempenho de mudas de alface e rúcula utilizando substratos produzidos com vermicompostos juntamente com a serragem e casca de arroz como agentes condicionantes. Além dos problemas estéticos, outros compostos presentes nestes tipos de efluentes podem ser tóxicos à vida aquática. Os processos oxidativos avançados (POA) vem sendo estudados devido a vantagem de serem mais rápidos, produzirem menos resíduos e não demandarem de grandes áreas de instalação quando se comparado a tratamentos convencionais. Este trabalho teve como objetivo a degradação de efluentes simulados contendo o corante Acid blue 40, o corante Acid red 151 e efluente misto contendo ambos os corantes por tratamento eletrolítico utilizando eletrodo de titânio recoberto por titânio/rutênio (70%TiO2/30%RuO2) com área de 40 cm² em um sistema de recirculação. Foi realizado planejamento experimental e por meio de análise de superfície de resposta, configurações de tratamentos otimizados foram realizadas. Foram realizadas análises de espectrofotometria, DQO, DBO, Cor, pH, cloro residual livre e condutividade durante os processos de tratamento. Análise de espectro de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR) foi realizada de todos os tratamentos. Foi também verificada a geração de clorofórmio por meio de análise de cromatografia gasosa e espectrometria de massa (GC-MS). Testes de ecotoxicidade com sementes de alface (Lactuca sativa) e rúcula (Eruca sativa) e com o microcrustáceo Artemia salina foram realizados durante os tratamentos. Teste de mutagenicidade foi realizado utilizando a cepa D7 da levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Os tratamentos otimizados degradaram a cor inicial em concordância com o planejamento experimental. A relação DBO/DQO aumentou durante os tratamentos indicando maior biodegradabilidade dos efluentes simulados após o tratamento eletrolítico. A análise de cor em 3 comprimentos de onda indicou que os subprodutos finais de todos os tratamentos apresentam cor amarelada. Análise de espectro de infravermelho sugeriu a produção de subprodutos tóxicos como nitro compostos durante os tratamentos, com a maioria sendo degradada ao fim dos processos. A análise de GC-MS para clorofórmio indicou a presença de baixas concentrações deste composto. Os testes de ecotoxicidade com a semente de L. sativa indicou toxicidade para o tratamento contendo o efluente Acid blue 40 enquanto o teste com a semente de E. sativa e com o microcrustáceo A. salina indicaram toxicidade para o tratamento do efluente contendo o corante Acid red 151. Por fim, apesar de apresentar sensibilidade a ataque mutagênicos, a cepa S. cerevisiae D7 não indicou mutagenicidade para nenhum dos tratamentos realizados. The textile effluents have the capacity to provide color to water from rivers and lakes due to the dyes present in their composition. In addition to aesthetic problems, other compounds present in these types of effluents can be toxic to the aquatic life. The advanced oxidative processes (AOP) have been studied due to the advantage of being faster, producing less waste and not having to spend large areas of installation when compared to conventional treatments. This work aimed at the degradation of simulated textile effluents containing the Acid blue 40 dye, Acid red 151 dye and a mixed effluent containing both dyes by electrolytic treatment using a titanium electrode covered by titanium/ruthenium (70%TiO2/30%RuO2) with an area of 40 cm² in a recirculating system. Experimental design was realized by the response surface the optimized configurations of the treatments were performed. Analysis of spectrophotometry, COD, BOD, color, pH, free residual chlorine and conductivity were performed during the treatment processes. Fourier transformed infrared spectrum analysis (FTIR) were performed in all treatments. The generation of chloroform was investigated by analysis of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Ecotoxicity tests with seeds of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and arugula (Eruca sativa) and with the microcrustacean Artemia salina were performed for during treatments. Mutagenicity test was performed using the D7 strain of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The optimized treatments degraded the initial color according to the experimental design. The BOD/COD ratio increased during treatments indicating higher biodegradability of the simulated effluents after electrolytic treatments. The color analysis in 3 wavelengths indicated that the final by-products of all treatments shown yellow color. The infrared spectrum analysis suggested the production of nitro-compounds during treatments, but most was degraded by the end of the processes. The GC-MS analysis for chloroform indicated the presence of low concentrations of the compound. The ecotoxicity tests with L. sativa seeds indicated toxicity for the Acid blue 40 effluent treatment while tests with E. sativa and A. salina indicated toxicity for the Acid red 151 effluent treatment. Finally, despite showing sensitivity for mutagenic attacks, the S. cerevisiae D7strain did not indicate mutagenicity for any one of the treatments performed. CNPq: 164422/2015-3.

El crecimiento demográfico progresivo genera la expansión de los centros urbanos hacia zonas donde comúnmente se ubican los cinturones hortícolas; este aumento poblacional ejerce una fuerte demanda de esas tierras productivas para destinarlas a proyectos de desarrollos urbanísticos. Ante esta situación, es necesaria la aplicación de tecnologías que permitan un mejor aprovechamiento del espacio cultivado, como la práctica de la intersiembra, que consiste en sembrar dos o más especies en la misma superficie para aumentar su productividad. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar el efecto de la intersiembra sobre el rendimiento y características morfológicas en lechuga y rúcula usando diferentes distanciamientos entre líneas, en la localidad de Colonia Benítez, Chaco. Los tratamientos fueron: R= rúcula a 0,2 m entre líneas; L= lechuga a 0,4 m entre líneas; LR1= intersiembra lechuga–rúcula, lechuga a 0,4 m entre líneas y una línea de rúcula entre las líneas de lechuga y LR2= intersiembra lechuga–rúcula, lechuga a 0,4 m entre líneas y dos líneas de rúcula entre las líneas de lechuga. La cosecha de rúcula se realizó a los 30 días después de la siembra (DDS) y la de lechuga a los 62 DDS, evaluándose el peso fresco aéreo (PF), el peso fresco total (PFT) y la tasa de tierra equivalente (Land Equivalent Ratio; LER), la cual es definida como la superficie total de monocultivo necesaria para lograr el mismo rendimiento que en intersiembra. En ambos cultivos se contó el número total de hojas y en lechuga se midió la longitud de tallo, el peso seco de las hojas y el peso seco del tallo. La mayor producción total se observó en el tratamiento LR1, seguida por LR2 y L. La intersiembra tuvo un efecto negativo sobre el cultivo de lechuga, disminuyendo el rendimiento; este efecto fue mayor cuando fueron dos las líneas de rúcula intersembradas (LR2). En lechuga el número de hojas y la longitud del tallo también se vieron afectados. En LR1 la intersiembra no tuvo efecto en el rendimiento de rúcula; sin embargo, en LR2 el efecto fue negativo, tanto para lechuga como para rúcula. En ninguno de los tratamientos se detectó un efecto sobre el número de hojas de rúcula. El tratamiento de LR1 presentó un LER superior a 1, considerándose que este tratamiento tuvo mejor performance en cuanto a su productividad y calidad de plantas. Progressive demographic growth generates the expansion of urban centers towards areas where horticultural belts are commonly located; this population increase produces a hard demand for these productive lands to be used for urban development projects. Given this situation, it is necessary to apply technologies such as intercropping, that consists of planting two or more species on the same field to increase their productivity. The objective of this work was to study the effect of intercropping on yield and morphological characteristics of lettuce and rocket using different distances between rows at Colonia Benítez, Chaco. Treatments were: R=rocket at 0.2 m between rows; L= lettuce at 0.4 m between rows; LR1= lettuce-rocket intercropped, with lettuce at 0.4 m between rows and one row of rocket between lettuce rows and LR2= lettuce-rocket intercropped, with lettuce at 0.4 m between rows and two rows of rocket between lettuce plants. Rocket was harvested 30 days after sowing (DAS) and lettuce 62 DAS, when the above ground fresh weight (FW) and total fresh weight (TFW) were determined, and land equivalent ratio (LER), defined as the total land area of the sole crop required to achieve the same yields as the intercrops, was calculated. For both crops the total number of leaves was counted and stem length, leaf dry weight and stem dry weight were measured on lettuce. The highest total production was observed in the LR1 treatment, followed by LR2 and L. Intercropping had a negative effect on lettuce, decreasing yield; this effect was greater when there were two lines of rocket (LR2). In lettuce the number of leaves and the length of the stem were also affected. Rocket yield was not affected in LR1, however, in LR2 the effect was negative for both lettuce and rocket. There was no effect on the number of leaves of rocket in any of the treatments. LR1 presented a LER higher than 1. Com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da densidade de plantas de alface na viabilidade econômica do consórcio de alface e rúcula, em duas épocas de cultivo (inverno e verão), dois experimentos foram instalados em campo, na Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brasil. Os tratamentos corresponderam a cinco consórcios de alface com rúcula nos espaçamentos entre linhas da alface de: 0,20; 0,25; 0,30; 0,35 e 0,40 m, cinco cultivos solteiros de alface nos mesmos espaçamentos adotados em consórcio, e um cultivo solteiro de rúcula no espaçamento entre linhas de 0,20 m. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições. No inverno, maior rentabilidade é obtida com a maior densidade populacional. Maior rentabilidade das culturas, em ambas épocas de cultivo é obtida no verão. Intercropping is a production system that can reduce the production cost and increase the profitability of vegetable producers, since it permits more efficient land and agricultural inputs use. In order to evaluate the effect of lettuce plant density on the economic feasibility of lettuce-rocket intercropping system over two growing seasons (winter and summer), two experiments were conducted in the field at São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brazil. The treatments consisted of five lettuce-rocket intercrops with spacing between lettuce rows of: 0.20; 0.25; 0.30; 0.35 and 0.40 m, five sole crop of lettuce in the same spacing between rows adopted in the intercropping system, and a sole cropping of rocket with spacing between rows of 0.20 m. The statistical design adopted was the complete randomized block with four replicates. During winter, higher profitability was achieved with the highest population density. Highest profitability of the crops in both seasons was obtained in summer. As plantas acometidas apresentavam mosaico, redução drástica no crescimento e deformação foliar, sintomas típicos da infeção por vírus. Associadas as essas plantas, também foram observadas altas populações de pulgões/afídeos e de plantas daninhas, como nabiça (Raphanus raphanistrum) e nabo forrageiro (Brassica rapa) apresentando sintomas de mosaico. Inicialmente, as plantas foram submetidas ao teste de ELISA indireto usando um antissoro para potyvirus, em seguida foi realizada a extração de RNA total e RT-PCR, utilizando as amostras ELISA-positivas. A sequência correspondente à região codificadora para a proteína capsidial foi obtida e o vírus foi identificado como Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV). Posteriormente outros campos de produção de folhosas foram visitados no Estado de São Paulo (região de Bragança Paulista e Mogi-Mirim) e o TuMV foi novamente identificado em rúcula, porém também em alface (Lactuca sativa) e acelga (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris). Analises biológicas e moleculares agruparam ambos os isolados de TuMV no grupo Brassica-Raphanus (BR), que inclui isolados infectando espécies de Brassica e Raphanus. É apresentado aqui o primeiro relato de TuMV naturalmente infectando rúcula, alface e acelga no Brasil. De acordo com a análise filogenética, pelo menos duas introduções diferentes de isolados de TuMV ocorreram no Brasil, correspondendo aos tipos basal-BR e world-B, infectando Brassica/Raphanus e Brassica, respectivamente. Abnormalities have been observed in rocket (Eruca sativa) fields in Botucatu, Sao Paulo state, Brazil since 2016. Symptoms of mosaic, reduction in foliar growth and deformation, typical symptoms of virus infection were observed in rocket plants. Associated to these plants we also found high populations of aphids, as well as raphanus weeds (Raphanus raphanistrum) and forage turnip (Brassica rapa) with mosaic symptoms. Initially, the plants were submitted to indirect ELISA using a potyvirus antiserum, and then total RNA extraction and RT-PCR were performed using the ELISA-positive samples. The complete coat protein sequence was obtained and the virus was identified as Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV). Later, other fields were visited in Sao Paulo state (cities of Bragança Paulista and Mogi-Mirim) and TuMV was again identified not only in rocket, but also in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris). Biological and molecular analysis grouped both TuMV isolates in the Brassica-Raphanus (BR) clade, which includes isolates infecting Brassica and Raphanus species. Here is the first report of rocket, lettuce and chard naturally infected with TuMV in Brazil. According to the phylogenetic analysis, at least two different introductions of TuMV isolates occurred in Brazil, corresponding to the basal-BR and world-B types, infecting Brassica/Raphanus and Brassica, respectively.

RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a viabilidade agronômica do bicultivo de rúcula (R) e alface consorciado (A) com cenoura (C) sob diferentes quantidades de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo e de proporções de densidades populacionais entre as culturas componentes no semiárido do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos completos casualizados com quatro repetições, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4. O primeiro fator foi constituído pelas quantidades de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo (10, 25, 40 e 55 t ha-1 em base seca) e o segundo fator pelas proporções de densidades populacionais das culturas componentes em policultivo [(50R-50C-50A (%); 40R-50C-40A (%); 30R-50C-30A(%) e 20R-50C-20A (%) das populações recomendadas em cultivos solteiro - PRCS)]. As folhosas foram plantadas em dois cultivos no ciclo da cenoura e uma análise conjunta foi realizada envolvendo os dois cultivos da rúcula e da alface e o fatorial 4 x 4. As características avaliadas foram: rendimento de massa verde (rúcula); massa seca da parte aérea e produtividade (alface); produtividade total; comercial; e classificada de raízes de cenoura. A vantagem monetária corrigida foi usada para avaliar a viabilidade agronômica dos sistemas consorciados. O uso da flor-de-seda como adubo verde se mostrou viável no policultivo de rúcula, cenoura e alface. O melhor desempenho agronômico do policultivo de rúcula, cenoura e alface foi registrado na quantidade de 55 t ha-1 de flor-de-seda incorporada ao solo. As proporções de densidades populacionais de rúcula, cenoura e alface de 50-50-50 (%) das PRCS foram as que proporcionaram a maior viabilidade agronômica dos policultivos. ABSTRACT: This work aimed to study the agronomic feasibility of the arugula (A) and lettuce (L) bicropping intercropped with carrot (C) under different amounts of roostertree incorporated into the soil and proportions of population densities among component crops in semiarid conditions of the Rio Grande do Norte state. The experimental design was randomized complete block with four replications, with the treatments arranged in a factorial 4 x 4. The first factor was constituted by the amounts of roostertree incorporated into the soil (10, 25, 40 and 55 t ha-1 on a dry basis) and the second factor by the proportions of population densities of the component crops in polyculture [(50A-50C-50L (%); 40A-50C-40L (%); 30A-50C-30L (%) and 20A-50C-20L (%) of the recommended populations in sole crops - RPSC)]. The leafy vegetable crops were planted in two cultivations during the carrot cycle, and a joint analysis was carried out involving the two cultivations in the 4 x 4 factorial scheme. The characteristics evaluated were green mass yield (arugula), dry mass of shoots and productivity (lettuce), total, commercial and classified productivity of carrot roots. The modified monetary advantage was used to evaluate the agronomic feasibility of intercropping systems. The use of roostertree as green manure proved viable in the polyculture of arugula, carrot, and lettuce. The major agronomic performance of the arugula, carrot and lettuce in the polyculture was registered in the amount of 55 t ha-1 of roostertree incorporated into the soil. The population density proportions of arugula, carrot and lettuce of 50A-50C-50L (%) of the RPSC were those that provided the greatest agronomic feasibility of the polycultures.

Resumo: O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho agronômico do consórcio de alface e rúcula fertilizado com diferentes quantidades de biomassa de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo. O experimento foi conduzido no período de setembro a novembro de 2011, na área de pesquisa da Fazenda Experimental Rafael Fernandes da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró-RN. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram das seguintes quantidades de biomassa de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo (5,15, 25, 35 e 45 t ha-1 em base seca). As características avaliadas nas hortaliças foram: altura e diâmetro de plantas (alface), número de folhas por planta, produtividade (alface), rendimento de massa verde (rúcula) e massa seca da parte aérea. A eficiência do cultivo consorciado foi determinada pelo escore da variável canônica. A otimização do desempenho agronômico da alface consorciada com rúcula foi viabilizada com a incorporação de aproximadamente 37 t ha-1 de flor-de-seda ao solo. O uso de flor-de-seda como adubo verde é viável agronomicamente no cultivo associado de alface e rúcula, além de contribuir para um melhor aproveitamento dos recursos ambientais. Abstract: The present work aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of lettuce-arugula intercropping fertilized with different amounts of roostertree biomass incorporated into the ground. The experiment was conducted during the period of September to November of 2011, in the research area of the Experimental Farm Rafael Fernandes, Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró-RN. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with five treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of the following biomass amounts of roostertree incorporated into the soil (5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 t ha- 1 on a dry basis). The characteristics evaluated in the vegetables were: height and diameter of plants (lettuce), number of leaves per plant, productivity (lettuce), yield of green mass (arugula) and dry mass of shoots. The efficiency of intercropping system was determined through the score of the canonical variable. The optimization of the agronomic performance of the lettuce intercropped with arugula was made possible with the incorporation of about 37 t ha-1 of roostertree into the ground. The use of roostertree as green manure is agronomically viable in the intercropping of lettuce and arugula besides contributing to a better use of environmental resources.

The effect of organic fertilization with cattle manure on fertility properties of soils with different clay contents was evaluated; as well as the influence of cattle manure fertilization on the production of lettuce, and on subsequent arugula and common chicory grown in these soils. The experiment with pot plants was arranged in randomized blocks and analyzed in a 3x6 factorial design with four replications. The treatments consisted of three soil types with different clay contents (166; 362; 565 g kg-1) and six cattle manure rates (0; 10; 20; 40; 80, and 160 t ha-1). Batches of each soil were manured, limed, filled in pots, moistened, and incubated for 30 days. Then, mineral base fertilization was applied and one lettuce seedling per each pot was grown. After lettuce harvest, the residual effect of organic fertilization was assessed in two subsequent crops, first arugula and then common chicory. The application of up to 160 t ha-1 cattle manure reduces soil acidity and increases nutrient contents, particularly of P, K and Zn, in soils with 165 to 565 g kg-1 clay content. Fertilization with cattle manure at rates of up to 160 t ha-1 increases electrical conductivity of soils, without affecting growth and yield of the leafy vegetables. Cattle manuring increases the yield of lettuce, as well as of arugula and common chicory grown afterwards. RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivos avaliar o efeito da adubação com esterco bovino em atributos de fertilidade de solos com diferentes teores de argila e, verificar a influência da adubação com esterco bovino na produção de alface americana, e da rúcula e almeirão, cultivados de forma sucessiva a alface. O experimento foi realizado em vasos, em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 3x6 com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por três solos com diferentes teores de argila (166; 362; 565 g kg-1) e seis doses de esterco bovino (0; 10; 20; 40; 80 e 160 t ha-1). Porções de cada solo receberam esterco bovino e calcário, foram transferidas para vasos, umedecidas e incubadas por 30 dias. A seguir, efetuou-se adubação mineral de plantio e cada vaso recebeu uma muda de alface. Após a colheita da alface, para avaliar o efeito residual da adubação orgânica foram realizados dois cultivos sucessivos, um de rúcula e outro de almeirão. A aplicação de até 160 t ha-1 de esterco bovino diminui a acidez e, aumenta os teores de nutrientes, particularmente P, K e Zn em solos com teores de argila de 165 a 565 g kg-1. A adubação com esterco bovino em doses de até 160 t ha-1 aumenta a condutividade elétrica dos solos, e esse acréscimo não prejudica o crescimento e a produção de hortaliças folhosas. A adubação com esterco bovino aumenta a produção de alface, como também a de rúcula e almeirão, cultivados de forma sucessiva.

This study aimed to evaluate the agro-economic efficiency of agrosystems of two croppings of arugula (A) and two of lettuce (L) intercropped with carrot (C) under different biomass amounts of roostertree incorporated into the soil and population density proportions between the component crops. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications, with the treatments arranged in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme. The first factor was made up of the amounts of roostertree biomass incorporated into the soil (10, 25, 40 and 55 t ha-1 on a dry basis) and the second factor by the population density proportions of the component crops in the polycultures (50A-50C-50L%, 40A-50C-40L%, 30A-50C-30L% and 20A-50C-20L% of the population recommended for single crops – PRSC). The agro-economic performance of arugula, carrot and lettuce in polyculture was optimized at 25 t ha-1 of roostertree incorporated into the soil. The population density proportions of arugula, carrot and lettuce of 50A-50C-50L% of the PRSC provided the best agro-economic efficiency to the polyculture. RESUMO Neste trabalho objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência agroeconômica de agrossistemas provenientes de dois cultivos de rúcula e dois de alface em consórcio com cenoura em diferentes quantidades de biomassa de flor-de-seda incorporadas ao solo e proporções de densidades populacionais entre as culturas componentes. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4. O primeiro fator foi constituído pelas quantidades de flor-de-seda (10, 25, 40 e 55 t ha-1 em base seca) e o segundo pelas proporções de densidades populacionais das culturas componentes nos policultivos (50R-50C-50A%; 40R-50C-40A%; 30R-50C-30A% e 20R-50C-20A% das populações recomendadas em cultivos solteiro - PRCS). O desempenho agroeconômico do policultivo de rúcula, cenoura e alface foi otimizado na quantidade de 25 t ha-1 de flor-de-seda incorporada ao solo. As proporções de densidades populacionais de rúcula, cenoura e alface de 50R-50C-50A% das PRCS foram as que proporcionaram ao policultivo as melhores eficiências agroeconômicas.

The allelopathy is a process for which products of the secondary metabolism, as terpenes phenolic, of a certain vegetal intervene significantly, generally of antagonistic form, in the development of other species of plants. The objective of this work was to chemically characterize the essential oil of Lippia sidoides Cham. growing in the Cariri cearense region, Brazil, and evaluate the allelopathyc effect of this oil on the germination of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.), and cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L.), in pre-plantation application. The monoterpene thymol (84.90%) has been identified as the principal constituent in the essential oil. The experiment was done in randomized complete block, in 4 x 3 factorial; being used four essential oil combinations applied in three different species in pre-plantation applications. Emergence velocity index (EVI), germination percentage and mean time to germination (MTG), had been analyzed through daily counting carried out until the 14th day after sowing. Through qualitative analysis performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were identified seven chemical constituents representing 97.82% of essential oil of L. sidoides, being that the constituent present in greater concentration in oil was the thymol (84.90%). Could be verified the occurrence of the negative allelopathyc effect of lettuce crop, because its present low EVI and greater MTG, for the other vegetable species there were no allelopathic effect.La alelopatía es un proceso mediante el cual productos metabólicos secundarios, tales como terpenos fenoles, producidos por una planta en particular interfieren significativamente, y de manera antagónica, en el desarrollo de otras especies vegetales. Nuestros objetivos fueron caracterizar químicamente el aceite esencial de Lippia sidoides Cham., cultivada en la región de Cariri Ceará, y evaluar el efecto alelopático del aceite aplicado en pre-siembra en la germinación de lechuga (Lactuca sativa L.), rúcula (Eruca sativa Mill.), y col rizada (Brassica oleracea L.). El principal constituyente del aceite esencial fue el monoterpeno timol (84,90%). Los experimentos fueron conducidos en bloques completos al azar en esquema factorial 4 x 3 con cuatro combinaciones de aceites esenciales aplicados en tres especies diferentes en pre-siembra. Se analizaron las siguientes variables: índice de velocidad de emergencia (EVI), porcentaje de germinación y el tiempo medio de germinación (MTG), los recuentos se llevaron a cabo todos los días hasta el decimocuarto día después de la siembra. A través de análisis cualitativos realizados por cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (GC/ ME) fueron identificados componentes químicos que representan 97,82% del aceite esencial de L. sidoides, siendo constituyente más concentrado timol (84,90%). Se comprobaron efectos alelopáticos negativos en lechuga, debido a que ésta mostró un bajo EVI y un alto MTG.

The intercropping practice is a viable technological option for the production of vegetables and the success of the association between crops will be greater the greater the complementarity between them. The present work was conducted from June to November 2006, at Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, to evaluate the productive performance of two lettuce and two rocket cultivars in two cultures in strip-intercropping systems. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks, with five replications and treatments arranged in a 2 x 2 + 2 factorial. The treatments consisted of the combination of two lettuce cultivars (Babá de Verão and Tainá) and two of rocket (Cultivada and Folha Larga) intercropped with carrot 'Brasília' plus two additional treatments (two lettuce cultivars or two rocket cultivars grown in sole crop). In each block a plot with carrot in sole crop was grown. The evaluated traits in lettuce were plant height and diameter, number of leaves per plant, productivity and shoot dry matter mass. In rocket were evaluated plant height, number of leaves per plant, green mass yield and shoot dry matter mass; and in carrot: plant height, total and marketable productivity, besides root classes, in long and medium roots, short roots and scrap roots. The Tainá lettuce cultivar had the best yield performance both in sole crop and intercropping system. The Cultivada and Folha Larga rocket cultivars had similar yield performance in both cropping systems. Both lettuce and rocket crops had better productive performance in the second culture. The mean production of carrot marketable roots in intercropping systems was 68.3%, being 48.6% for long and medium roots and 19.7% for short roots, while in the sole crop the mean production of marketable carrot roots was of 75.0%, being 51.7% for long and medium roots and 23.3% for short roots.A prática de consórcio é uma opção tecnológica viável para a produção de hortaliças e o sucesso da associação entre as culturas será tanto maior quanto maior a complementaridade entre elas. O presente trabalho foi realizado de junho a novembro de 2006, na Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró, Brasil, para avaliar o desempenho produtivo de duas cultivares de alface e duas de rúcula consorciadas em faixas com cenoura em dois cultivos. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos completos casualizados com cinco repetições, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 + 2. Os tratamentos consistiram da combinação de duas cultivares de alface (Babá de Verão e Tainá) e duas de rúcula (Cultivada e Folha Larga) consorciadas com cenoura 'Brasília', mais dois tratamentos adicionais (duas cultivares de alface ou duas cultivares de rúcula cultivadas em cultivo solteiro). Em cada bloco foi inserida uma parcela com a cenoura em cultivo solteiro. As características avaliadas na alface foram altura e diâmetro de plantas, número de folhas por planta, produtividade e massa da matéria seca da parte aérea; na rúcula: altura de plantas, número de folhas por planta, rendimento de massa verde e massa da matéria seca da parte aérea, e na cenoura: altura de plantas, produtividade total e comercial, percentual de raízes longas e médias, de raízes curtas e de refugo. A cultivar de alface Tainá teve melhor desempenho, tanto em cultivo solteiro como consorciado. As rúculas 'Cultivada' e 'Folha Larga' tiveram desempenho produtivo semelhante em ambos os sistemas de cultivo. As culturas de alface e rúcula tiveram melhor desempenho produtivo no segundo cultivo. A produção de raízes comerciais de cenoura nos sistemas consorciados foi de 68,3%, dos quais 48,6% foram de raízes longas e médias e 19,7% de raízes curtas. A produção de raízes comerciais de cenoura no sistema solteiro foi de 75,0%, dos quais 51,7% foram de raízes longas e médias e 23,3% de raízes curtas.

The work was carried out at UNESP, Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, from September to December 2006, to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on intercropping of lettuce and rocket. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design, with four replications, treatments being arranged in a 4 x 4 + 2 factorial design. The treatments were the result of a combination of four N rates for lettuce (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg ha-1) and four N rates for rocket (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg ha-1), plus two additional treatments, which corresponded to lettuce and rocket under single cropping. Veronica (lettuce) and Folha Larga (rocket) were the cultivars used. An increase in the N rate for both cultures, under intercropping system, caused fresh matter gains and higher yields for lettuce and rocket, maximizing the land equivalent ratio (1.84) at 127 kg ha-1 of N for lettuce and 195 kg ha-1 of N for rocket.O trabalho foi conduzido na UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP, de setembro a dezembro de 2006, com objetivo de avaliar o efeito da adubação nitrogenada em consórcio de alface e rúcula. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 + 2. Os tratamentos resultaram da combinação de quatro doses de N para a alface (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1) e quatro doses de N para a rúcula (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1), mais dois tratamentos adicionais, correspondentes aos monocultivos de alface e rúcula. As cultivares utilizadas foram Verônica (alface) e Folha Larga (rúcula). O aumento da dose de N para ambas as culturas, em consórcio, proporcionou incrementos na massa fresca e produtividade de alface e da rúcula e maximizou o índice de eficiência de uso da área (1,84) na dose 127 kg ha-1 de N para a alface e 195 kg ha-1 de N para rúcula.

Foram realizados dois experimentos em Lavras-MG, nos meses de abril a setembro de 2006. Para cada experimento, utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos completos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro arranjos espaciais entre as culturas da alface (A) e rúcula (R), plantadas em fileiras alternadas 1A:1R; fileiras duplas alternadas 2A:2R; fileiras triplas alternadas 3A:3R e quatro fileiras alternadas 4A:4R e, alface e rúcula em cultivo solteiro. Avaliou-se o diâmetro (alface), altura, número de folhas por planta, rendimento de folhas e massa seca da parte aérea da alface e rúcula. Os maiores rendimentos de folhas da alface foram registrados no cultivo orgânico. O rendimento de massa verde da rúcula, no sistema solteiro sobressaiu-se dos demais, embora estatisticamente semelhante aos arranjos espaciais 3A:3R e 4A:4R no número de folhas. No cultivo orgânico, diferenças significativas entre o primeiro e o segundo ciclo da rúcula expressaram-se na altura de plantas e na massa seca da parte aérea, com a maior altura média no primeiro cultivo e a maior quantidade de massa seca da parte aérea na rebrota. Os consórcios da alface e rúcula nos arranjos espaciais 1A:1R e 3A:3R tiveram a maior eficiência do uso da área (EUA), de 55 e 63%, respectivamente, no sistema de cultivo orgânico. A eficiência biológica aumentou para 62 e 70% nestes mesmos arranjos, com o cultivo da rebrota da rúcula no sistema orgânico. Todas as associações da alface e rúcula, assim como os seus cultivos solteiros tiveram melhor desempenho produtivo sob a adubação orgânica. A rebrota da rúcula aumentou a eficiência agronômica do sistema consorciado.Two experiments were carried out at Federal University of Lavras Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from April to September, 2006, aiming to evaluate the lettuce and rocket intercropping system, under organic and mineral fertilization in different spatial arrangements. For each experiment, the experimental design was randomized complete blocks with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of four spatial arrangements of lettuce (a) and rocket (r), planted in alternate rows 1A: 1R; alternate double rows 2A: 2R; alternate triple rows 3A: 3R, alternate four rows 4A: 4R and lettuce and rocket in sole crop. Evaluations for diameter (lettuce), plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf yield and leaf dry matter were made in the lettuce and rocket crop. The highest yield of lettuce leaves was registered in the organic farming. The yield of rocket fresh mass, in sole crop was higher than the others although statistically similar to the spatial arrangements 3A: 3R and 4A: 4R for the number of leaves. In organic farming, significant differences between first rocket growth and regrowth were observed in plant height and shoot dry mass, with the highest average of plant height registered in the growth and the highest shoot dry mass in the regrowth. The intercropping systems of lettuce and rocket in the spatial arrangements of 1A: 1R and 3A: 3R had the highest efficiency (LER), ranging from 55 to 63%, respectively, in the organic farming. Biological efficiency increased up to 62 and 70% in these same arrangements, with the regrowth of the rocket in the organic farming. All the associations of the lettuce and rocket as well as their sole crop had better productive performance under the organic fertilization and the regrowth of rocket increased the agronomic efficiency of the intercropping system.

Avaliou-se a produtividade de grupos de alface e da rúcula, em consórcio, em relação aos seus cultivos solteiros, na UNESP Jaboticabal, em condições de campo, em duas épocas de cultivo, maio a agosto e setembro a novembro de 2001, sob delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos constaram de combinações dos fatores grupos de alface (crespa, cv. Vera; lisa, cv. Elisa e americana, cv. Tainá), sistemas de cultivo (consórcio e cultivo solteiro) e épocas de semeadura da rúcula para o estabelecimento do consórcio [0; 7 e 14 dias após o transplante (DAT) da alface]. As maiores matérias fresca e seca de alface foram obtidas na primavera, com destaque para a alface americana. As alfaces não foram afetadas pelo sistema de cultivo. A maior matéria fresca de rúcula, no outono-inverno, foi obtida em consórcio, a 0 DAT, com as alfaces crespa e lisa e, aos 7 DAT com americana, enquanto na primavera, quando foi consorciada aos 7 DAT com alface crespa e a 0 DAT com alfaces do grupo lisa e americana. A rúcula teve sua matéria seca reduzida nos consórcios estabelecidos tardiamente, aos 14 DAT. Os cultivos consorciados apresentaram-se superiores aos cultivos solteiros entre 5 e 93%, segundo o índice de uso eficiente da terra. Os maiores índices de uso eficiente da terra foram obtidos com os consórcios de rúcula e alface crespa a 0 DAT (1,93), no outono-inverno e pelas mesmas hortaliças aos 7 DAT (1,84), na primavera.The productivity of different lettuce groups and roquette was evaluated when sown in two different periods and cultivated either singly or intercropped. Theses experiments were carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. The first growing period was from May to August (Autumn-Winter) and the second from September to November (Spring) of 2001. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of the following factors levels: lettuce groups (crisp, cv. Vera; looseleaf, cv. Elisa; and crisphead lettuce, cv. Tainá), cropping systems (intercropping and sole crop) and roquette sowing times [0; 7, and 14 days after lettuce transplantating (DAT)]. The highest fresh and dry matter production were observed for crisphead lettuce in the Spring. The cropping systems did not affect the lettuce groups productivity. The highest roquette fresh matter production was observed in the Autumn-Winter period at 0 DAT, with the crisp and looseleaf lettuce, and at 7 DAT with crisphead lettuce. For the Spring period the highest roquette fresh matter production was observed at 7 DAT with crisp lettuce and at 0 DAT with looseleaf and the crisphead lettuce. Roquette dry matter was reduced in the intercropping at 14 DAT. The intercropping system yielded 5 to 93% more than the single system according to the land equivalent ratio. The highest land equivalent ratio was observed in the roquette-crisp lettuce intercropping at 0 DAT the crisp variety (1.93) in the Autumn-Winter, while the highest ratio was observed at 7 DAT (1.84) in the Spring.

O trabalho foi conduzido na UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP, de setembro/2003 a janeiro/2004, com objetivo de avaliar a viabilidade da consorciação de pimentão com as culturas de repolho, rúcula, alface e rabanete. O experimento constou de 15 tratamentos, correspondentes a 10 cultivos consorciados (combinações das cinco hortaliças) e cinco monocultivos. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com seis repetições. Foram utilizados os híbridos Magali R e Kenzan, respectivamente, para pimentão e repolho; e as cultivares Vera, Cultivada e Crimson Gigante, respectivamente, para alface, rúcula e rabanete. As produtividades de pimentão e repolho em cultivo consorciado não diferiram significativamente das obtidas em monocultivo. Maior massa fresca de parte aérea de plantas de alface (438,86 g/planta) foi observada quando a alface foi consorciada com pimentão, diferindo estatisticamente dos demais cultivos que obtiveram em média 323,05 g/planta de alface. Aumento na produtividade de raízes comerciais de rabanete foi observado quando consorciado com pimentão, porém, foi significativamente superior apenas ao cultivo consorciado de pimentão+repolho+rabanete. A massa fresca da parte aérea da rúcula mostrou diferença estatística apenas entre os consórcios de pimentão+rúcula+alface e pimentão+repolho+rúcula. Exceto o consórcio pimentão+repolho que obteve índice de uso eficiente da terra (UET) de 1,92; todos os outros consórcios apresentaram UET superior a 2,0, com maior UET (2,64) obtido no consórcio pimentão+alface. A superioridade de 92 a 164% na produção de alimento por área dos consórcios sobre os monocultivos, demonstra a viabilidade dos policultivos e maior eficiência do uso da terra.This work was carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, from September 2003 to January 2004, to evaluate the feasibility of an intercropping system of pepper with cabbage, rocket, lettuce and radish, in relation to their monocultives. The experiment consisted of 15 treatments, corresponding to 10 intercropping and five monocultives. The experimental design was a radomized block with six replications. The hybrid Magali R and Kenzan were used, respectively, for pepper and cabbage; and cultivars Vera, Cultivada and Crimson Gigante, respectively, for lettuce, rocket and radish. Yields of pepper and cabbage in intercropping did not differ significantly to that obtained in monocultive. The largest fresh mass of the aerial part of lettuce (438.86 g/plant) was observed in lettuce and pepper intercropping cultivation. In the other cultivations, 323.05 g/plant was obtained of lettuce. Increase in yield of commercial roots of radish was observed in radish and pepper intercropping, however, it was significantly larger to the intercropping cultivation of the pepper+cabbage+radish only. The fresh mass of the aerial part of the rocket showed statistical difference between pepper+rocket+lettuce and pepper+rocket+cabbage intercropping. Except for pepper+cabbage intercropping with land efficient use (LEU) of 1.92, all the intercropping cultives showed LEU higher than 2.0, with highwest LEU (2.64) obtained with pepper+lettuce intercropping. The better results obtained with intercropping in relation to production of food per area, demonstrate the viability of policultives and better land efficient use.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se existe efeito positivo ou negativo de extratos aquosos de plantas aromáricas no desenvolvimento inicial de plantulas de rucula, tomate, pimenta e alface em condições de laboratório. ref. 14036. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes espectros de luz sobre o potencial fisiológico de espécies olerícolas. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, no esquema fatorial três por cinco, com quatro repetições. As três espécies testadas foram alface (Lactuca sativa L.), rúcula (Eruca sativa Mill.) e couve chinesa (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis). Os cinco espectros de luz utilizados foram: vermelho, azul, amarelo, branco e ausência de luz. O teste de germinação foi conduzido em germinador tipo BOD, com temperatura constante de 25°C. Para a alface o espectro azul revela efeito negativo sobre as variáveis primeira contagem, percentual de germinação e comprimento de radícula. Para espécies de rúcula e couve chinesa, o espectro de luz vermelha e amarela apresentaram os melhores resultados para as variáveis estudadas.

Different types of mulch, in comparison with a control treatment in which the soil of the beds remained uncovered. These mulches were represented by leaves dried bamboo or by thin leaves and thin branches of gliricidia. The six treatments The combined tests made up an experiment designed in randomized blocks, with four repetitions, corresponding to a 2x3 factorial scheme and subdivided plots. The mulches occupied the plots while the treatment dictated by the supplementary cover fertilization occupied the subplots. Immediately after the respective harvests, the following phytotechnical variables: diameter (lettuce) and size or height (arugula), number of leaves and biomass (dry and fresh) per plant. The statistical analysis of the collected data revealed significance of supplementary fertilization with bokashi for any of the parameters considered in the measurement of lettuce's agronomic performance. They were also not significant interactions were detected between this factor and the types of mulch in the lettuce. However, it was found that the mulch with the gliricidia straw, regardless whether or not to use bokashi in coverage, provided mean values ??significantly more high for all phytotechnical variables for harvested lettuce. On the other hand, the mulche with bamboo foliage, for the vast majority of combined treatments, it was equal or was lower than the absence of soil mulch. It is concluded by the technical feasibility of the use of gliricidia for mulch formation in the organic management of 'Vera' curly lettuce under the autumn-winter conditions of the Baixada Fluminense. Finally, the subsequent planting of the Arugula showed no residual effects of the treatments compared in the lettuce experiment. The allelopathy is a process for which products of the secondary metabolism, as terpenes phenolic, of a certain vegetal intervene significantly, generally of antagonistic form, in the development of other species of plants. The objective of this work was to chemically characterize the essential oil of Lippia sidoides Cham. growing in the Cariri cearense region, Brazil, and evaluate the allelopathyc effect of this oil on the germination of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.), and cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L.), in pre-plantation application. The monoterpene thymol (84.90%) has been identified as the principal constituent in the essential oil. The experiment was done in randomized complete block, in 4 x 3 factorial; being used four essential oil combinations applied in three different species in pre-plantation applications. Emergence velocity index (EVI), germination percentage and mean time to germination (MTG), had been analyzed through daily counting carried out until the 14th day after sowing. Through qualitative analysis performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were identified seven chemical constituents representing 97.82% of essential oil of L. sidoides, being that the constituent present in greater concentration in oil was the thymol (84.90%). Could be verified the occurrence of the negative allelopathyc effect of lettuce crop, because its present low EVI and greater MTG, for the other vegetable species there were no allelopathic effect. La alelopatía es un proceso mediante el cual productos metabólicos secundarios, tales como terpenos fenoles, producidos por una planta en particular interfieren significativamente, y de manera antagónica, en el desarrollo de otras especies vegetales. Nuestros objetivos fueron caracterizar químicamente el aceite esencial de Lippia sidoides Cham., cultivada en la región de Cariri Ceará, y evaluar el efecto alelopático del aceite aplicado en pre-siembra en la germinación de lechuga (Lactuca sativa L.), rúcula (Eruca sativa Mill.), y col rizada (Brassica oleracea L.). El principal constituyente del aceite esencial fue el monoterpeno timol (84,90%). Los experimentos fueron conducidos en bloques completos al azar en esquema factorial 4 x 3 con cuatro combinaciones de aceites esenciales aplicados en tres especies diferentes en pre-siembra. Se analizaron las siguientes variables: índice de velocidad de emergencia (EVI), porcentaje de germinación y el tiempo medio de germinación (MTG), los recuentos se llevaron a cabo todos los días hasta el decimocuarto día después de la siembra. A través de análisis cualitativos realizados por cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (GC/ ME) fueron identificados componentes químicos que representan 97,82% del aceite esencial de L. sidoides, siendo constituyente más concentrado timol (84,90%). Se comprobaron efectos alelopáticos negativos en lechuga, debido a que ésta mostró un bajo EVI y un alto MTG.

O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 + 2. Os tratamentos resultaram da combinação de quatro doses de N para a alface (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1) e quatro doses de N para a rúcula (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg ha-1), mais dois tratamentos adicionais, correspondentes aos monocultivos de alface e rúcula. As cultivares utilizadas foram Verônica (alface) e Folha Larga (rúcula). O aumento da dose de N para ambas as culturas, em consórcio, proporcionou incrementos na massa fresca e produtividade de alface e da rúcula e maximizou o índice de eficiência de uso da área (1,84) na dose 127 kg ha-1 de N para a alface e 195 kg ha-1 de N para rúcula. The work was carried out at UNESP, Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, from September to December 2006, to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on intercropping of lettuce and rocket. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design, with four replications, treatments being arranged in a 4 x 4 + 2 factorial design. The treatments were the result of a combination of four N rates for lettuce (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg ha-1) and four N rates for rocket (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg ha-1), plus two additional treatments, which corresponded to lettuce and rocket under single cropping. Veronica (lettuce) and Folha Larga (rocket) were the cultivars used. An increase in the N rate for both cultures, under intercropping system, caused fresh matter gains and higher yields for lettuce and rocket, maximizing the land equivalent ratio (1.84) at 127 kg ha-1 of N for lettuce and 195 kg ha-1 of N for rocket. The intercropping practice is a viable technological option for the production of vegetables and the success of the association between crops will be greater the greater the complementarity between them. The present work was conducted from June to November 2006, at Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, to evaluate the productive performance of two lettuce and two rocket cultivars in two cultures in strip-intercropping systems. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks, with five replications and treatments arranged in a 2 x 2 + 2 factorial. The treatments consisted of the combination of two lettuce cultivars (Babá de Verão and Tainá) and two of rocket (Cultivada and Folha Larga) intercropped with carrot 'Brasília' plus two additional treatments (two lettuce cultivars or two rocket cultivars grown in sole crop). In each block a plot with carrot in sole crop was grown. The evaluated traits in lettuce were plant height and diameter, number of leaves per plant, productivity and shoot dry matter mass. In rocket were evaluated plant height, number of leaves per plant, green mass yield and shoot dry matter mass; and in carrot: plant height, total and marketable productivity, besides root classes, in long and medium roots, short roots and scrap roots. The Tainá lettuce cultivar had the best yield performance both in sole crop and intercropping system. The Cultivada and Folha Larga rocket cultivars had similar yield performance in both cropping systems. Both lettuce and rocket crops had better productive performance in the second culture. The mean production of carrot marketable roots in intercropping systems was 68.3%, being 48.6% for long and medium roots and 19.7% for short roots, while in the sole crop the mean production of marketable carrot roots was of 75.0%, being 51.7% for long and medium roots and 23.3% for short roots. A prática de consórcio é uma opção tecnológica viável para a produção de hortaliças e o sucesso da associação entre as culturas será tanto maior quanto maior a complementaridade entre elas. O presente trabalho foi realizado de junho a novembro de 2006, na Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró, Brasil, para avaliar o desempenho produtivo de duas cultivares de alface e duas de rúcula consorciadas em faixas com cenoura em dois cultivos. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos completos casualizados com cinco repetições, com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 + 2. Os tratamentos consistiram da combinação de duas cultivares de alface (Babá de Verão e Tainá) e duas de rúcula (Cultivada e Folha Larga) consorciadas com cenoura 'Brasília', mais dois tratamentos adicionais (duas cultivares de alface ou duas cultivares de rúcula cultivadas em cultivo solteiro). Em cada bloco foi inserida uma parcela com a cenoura em cultivo solteiro. As características avaliadas na alface foram altura e diâmetro de plantas, número de folhas por planta, produtividade e massa da matéria seca da parte aérea; na rúcula: altura de plantas, número de folhas por planta, rendimento de massa verde e massa da matéria seca da parte aérea, e na cenoura: altura de plantas, produtividade total e comercial, percentual de raízes longas e médias, de raízes curtas e de refugo. A cultivar de alface Tainá teve melhor desempenho, tanto em cultivo solteiro como consorciado. As rúculas 'Cultivada' e 'Folha Larga' tiveram desempenho produtivo semelhante em ambos os sistemas de cultivo. As culturas de alface e rúcula tiveram melhor desempenho produtivo no segundo cultivo. A produção de raízes comerciais de cenoura nos sistemas consorciados foi de 68,3%, dos quais 48,6% foram de raízes longas e médias e 19,7% de raízes curtas. A produção de raízes comerciais de cenoura no sistema solteiro foi de 75,0%, dos quais 51,7% foram de raízes longas e médias e 23,3% de raízes curtas.

Foram realizados dois experimentos em Lavras-MG, nos meses de abril a setembro de 2006. Para cada experimento, utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos completos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro arranjos espaciais entre as culturas da alface (A) e rúcula (R), plantadas em fileiras alternadas 1A:1R; fileiras duplas alternadas 2A:2R; fileiras triplas alternadas 3A:3R e quatro fileiras alternadas 4A:4R e, alface e rúcula em cultivo solteiro. Avaliou-se o diâmetro (alface), altura, número de folhas por planta, rendimento de folhas e massa seca da parte aérea da alface e rúcula. Os maiores rendimentos de folhas da alface foram registrados no cultivo orgânico. O rendimento de massa verde da rúcula, no sistema solteiro sobressaiu-se dos demais, embora estatisticamente semelhante aos arranjos espaciais 3A:3R e 4A:4R no número de folhas. No cultivo orgânico, diferenças significativas entre o primeiro e o segundo ciclo da rúcula expressaram-se na altura de plantas e na massa seca da parte aérea, com a maior altura média no primeiro cultivo e a maior quantidade de massa seca da parte aérea na rebrota. Os consórcios da alface e rúcula nos arranjos espaciais 1A:1R e 3A:3R tiveram a maior eficiência do uso da área (EUA), de 55 e 63%, respectivamente, no sistema de cultivo orgânico. A eficiência biológica aumentou para 62 e 70% nestes mesmos arranjos, com o cultivo da rebrota da rúcula no sistema orgânico. Todas as associações da alface e rúcula, assim como os seus cultivos solteiros tiveram melhor desempenho produtivo sob a adubação orgânica. A rebrota da rúcula aumentou a eficiência agronômica do sistema consorciado. Two experiments were carried out at Federal University of Lavras Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from April to September, 2006, aiming to evaluate the lettuce and rocket intercropping system, under organic and mineral fertilization in different spatial arrangements. For each experiment, the experimental design was randomized complete blocks with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of four spatial arrangements of lettuce (a) and rocket (r), planted in alternate rows 1A: 1R; alternate double rows 2A: 2R; alternate triple rows 3A: 3R, alternate four rows 4A: 4R and lettuce and rocket in sole crop. Evaluations for diameter (lettuce), plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf yield and leaf dry matter were made in the lettuce and rocket crop. The highest yield of lettuce leaves was registered in the organic farming. The yield of rocket fresh mass, in sole crop was higher than the others although statistically similar to the spatial arrangements 3A: 3R and 4A: 4R for the number of leaves. In organic farming, significant differences between first rocket growth and regrowth were observed in plant height and shoot dry mass, with the highest average of plant height registered in the growth and the highest shoot dry mass in the regrowth. The intercropping systems of lettuce and rocket in the spatial arrangements of 1A: 1R and 3A: 3R had the highest efficiency (LER), ranging from 55 to 63%, respectively, in the organic farming. Biological efficiency increased up to 62 and 70% in these same arrangements, with the regrowth of the rocket in the organic farming. All the associations of the lettuce and rocket as well as their sole crop had better productive performance under the organic fertilization and the regrowth of rocket increased the agronomic efficiency of the intercropping system.

The economical importance of “ready to use” fruit and vegetable products (4th range), greatly increased in the last ten years; to date Lactuca sativa, Cichorium spp., Eruca sativa, Diplotaxis spp and Valerianella locusta cover a great part of the vegetable market. The final products quality can be achieved using healthy seeds and appropriate agronomic techniques. One of the most important pathogens of these species is Fusarium oxysporum: infected plants are usually stunted, leaves turn pale green to golden yellow and later wilt, wither, die and drop off progressively upward from the stem base. Browning occur in vascular tissue (xylem) of roots and lower stem, while roots may decay and seedlings sometimes wilt and die. Surviving seeds can act as source of primary inoculum. In the present work more than 100 seed lots of Diplotaxis spp., Eruca sativa, Lactuca spp. and Valerianella locusta have been analyzed, in order to assess the incidence of F. oxysporum on commercial seeds. Our data highlight the very low frequency of F. oxysporum infection and the presence of other Fusarium species belonging to Gibberella fujikuroi complex.

It was evaluated the intercropping of lettuce groups economically with roquette, in two experiments, it was carried at Unesp, Jaboticabal-SP. The economical analyses were accomplished with prices of May and September of 2005. The total operational costs (COT) of the intercropping between crisp lettuce and roquette; looseleaf lettuce and roquette; and crisphead lettuce and roquette were from 14,8% to 95,6% highest to the of the singly cultivations of the cultures. The intercropping were shown profitable, the largest gross and liquid revenues happened in established intercropping with crisphead lettuce and roquette, in the Autumn-Winter, and with crisp lettuce and roquette, in the Spring. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados completos, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 + 2. Os tratamentos resultaram da combinação de quatro doses de N para a alface (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg/ha de N) e quatro doses de N para a rúcula (0, 65, 130 e 195 kg/ha de N), mais dois tratamentos adicionais, correspondentes às monoculturas de alface e rúcula. As cultivares utilizadas foram Verônica (alface) e Folha Larga (rúcula). Para todas as características avaliadas de plantas de alface a monocultura (testemunha) tiveram melhor desempenho que em consórcios, não ocorrendo diferenças para as características de rúcula. O aumento da dose de N para ambas as culturas, em consórcio, proporcionou incrementos nas características de plantas de alface e rúcula. A máxima produtividade de alface, 23.744,48 kg/ha, foi obtida com 100 kg/ha de N para alface e 195 kg/ha de N para rúcula. A máxima produtividade de rúcula, 14.435,78 kg/ha, foi obtida com a adubação de 195 kg/ha de alface e 180 kg/ha de N para rúcula. A maximização do índice de eficiência de uso da área (1,86) foi obtido na dose 127 kg/ha N para a alface e 195 xv kg/ha N para rúcula. O maior lucro operacional, R$ 29.026,11/ha, foi obtido na combinação de doses de 122 kg/ha N para alface e 195 kg/ha N para rúcula. In order to evaluate the influence how nitrogen rates used for lettuce and/or rocket, under intercropping, affect the plants (nutrition and growth conditions), and the intercropping (yielding, grading, land equivalent ratio and profitability), an experiment was carried out at the campus of Unesp in Jaboticabal-SP, from September to December 2006. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design, with four replications, treatments being arranged in a 4 x 4 + 2 factorial design. The treatments were the result of a combination of four N rates for lettuce (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg/ha of N), and four N rates for rocket (0, 65, 130 and 195 kg/ha of N), plus two additional treatments, which corresponded to lettuce and rocket under single cropping. Veronica (lettuce) and Folha Larga (rocket) were the cultivars used. For all the plant characteristics of lettuce that were studied, the single cropping (witness) had better performance than in intercropping, whereas no differences were observed for the rocket characteristics. An increase in the N rate for both cultures under intercropping showed gains in the plant characteristics of lettuce and rocket. Maximum lettuce yield, 23,744.48 kg/ha, was achieved with the application of 100 kg N ha for lettuce, and 195 kg N ha for rocket. Maximum rocket yield, 14,435.78 kg/ha, was achieved with the application of 195 kg N ha for lettuce, and 180 kg N ha for rocket. Os tratamentos constaram de combinações dos fatores grupos de alface (crespa, cv. Vera; lisa, cv. Elisa e americana, cv. Tainá), sistemas de cultivo (consórcio e cultivo solteiro) e épocas de semeadura da rúcula para o estabelecimento do consórcio [0; 7 e 14 dias após o transplante (DAT) da alface]. As maiores matérias fresca e seca de alface foram obtidas na primavera, com destaque para a alface americana. As alfaces não foram afetadas pelo sistema de cultivo. A maior matéria fresca de rúcula, no outono-inverno, foi obtida em consórcio, a 0 DAT, com as alfaces crespa e lisa e, aos 7 DAT com americana, enquanto na primavera, quando foi consorciada aos 7 DAT com alface crespa e a 0 DAT com alfaces do grupo lisa e americana. A rúcula teve sua matéria seca reduzida nos consórcios estabelecidos tardiamente, aos 14 DAT. Os cultivos consorciados apresentaram-se superiores aos cultivos solteiros entre 5 e 93%, segundo o índice de uso eficiente da terra. Os maiores índices de uso eficiente da terra foram obtidos com os consórcios de rúcula e alface crespa a 0 DAT (1,93), no outono-inverno e pelas mesmas hortaliças aos 7 DAT (1,84), na primavera. The productivity of different lettuce groups and roquette was evaluated when sown in two different periods and cultivated either singly or intercropped. Theses experiments were carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. The first growing period was from May to August (Autumn-Winter) and the second from September to November (Spring) of 2001. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of the following factors levels: lettuce groups (crisp, cv. Vera; looseleaf, cv. Elisa; and crisphead lettuce, cv. Tainá), cropping systems (intercropping and sole crop) and roquette sowing times [0; 7, and 14 days after lettuce transplantating (DAT)]. The highest fresh and dry matter production were observed for crisphead lettuce in the Spring. The cropping systems did not affect the lettuce groups productivity. The highest roquette fresh matter production was observed in the Autumn-Winter period at 0 DAT, with the crisp and looseleaf lettuce, and at 7 DAT with crisphead lettuce. For the Spring period the highest roquette fresh matter production was observed at 7 DAT with crisp lettuce and at 0 DAT with looseleaf and the crisphead lettuce. Roquette dry matter was reduced in the intercropping at 14 DAT. The intercropping system yielded 5 to 93% more than the single system according to the land equivalent ratio. The highest land equivalent ratio was observed in the roquette-crisp lettuce intercropping at 0 DAT the crisp variety (1.93) in the Autumn-Winter, while the highest ratio was observed at 7 DAT (1.84) in the Spring. O experimento constou de 15 tratamentos, correspondentes a 10 cultivos consorciados (combinações das cinco hortaliças) e cinco monocultivos. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com seis repetições. Foram utilizados os híbridos Magali R e Kenzan, respectivamente, para pimentão e repolho; e as cultivares Vera, Cultivada e Crimson Gigante, respectivamente, para alface, rúcula e rabanete. As produtividades de pimentão e repolho em cultivo consorciado não diferiram significativamente das obtidas em monocultivo. Maior massa fresca de parte aérea de plantas de alface (438,86 g/planta) foi observada quando a alface foi consorciada com pimentão, diferindo estatisticamente dos demais cultivos que obtiveram em média 323,05 g/planta de alface. Aumento na produtividade de raízes comerciais de rabanete foi observado quando consorciado com pimentão, porém, foi significativamente superior apenas ao cultivo consorciado de pimentão+repolho+rabanete. A massa fresca da parte aérea da rúcula mostrou diferença estatística apenas entre os consórcios de pimentão+rúcula+alface e pimentão+repolho+rúcula. Exceto o consórcio pimentão+repolho que obteve índice de uso eficiente da terra (UET) de 1,92; todos os outros consórcios apresentaram UET superior a 2,0, com maior UET (2,64) obtido no consórcio pimentão+alface. A superioridade de 92 a 164% na produção de alimento por área dos consórcios sobre os monocultivos, demonstra a viabilidade dos policultivos e maior eficiência do uso da terra. This work was carried out in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, from September 2003 to January 2004, to evaluate the feasibility of an intercropping system of pepper with cabbage, rocket, lettuce and radish, in relation to their monocultives. The experiment consisted of 15 treatments, corresponding to 10 intercropping and five monocultives. The experimental design was a radomized block with six replications. The hybrid Magali R and Kenzan were used, respectively, for pepper and cabbage; and cultivars Vera, Cultivada and Crimson Gigante, respectively, for lettuce, rocket and radish. Yields of pepper and cabbage in intercropping did not differ significantly to that obtained in monocultive. The largest fresh mass of the aerial part of lettuce (438.86 g/plant) was observed in lettuce and pepper intercropping cultivation. In the other cultivations, 323.05 g/plant was obtained of lettuce. Increase in yield of commercial roots of radish was observed in radish and pepper intercropping, however, it was significantly larger to the intercropping cultivation of the pepper+cabbage+radish only. The fresh mass of the aerial part of the rocket showed statistical difference between pepper+rocket+lettuce and pepper+rocket+cabbage intercropping. Except for pepper+cabbage intercropping with land efficient use (LEU) of 1.92, all the intercropping cultives showed LEU higher than 2.0, with highwest LEU (2.64) obtained with pepper+lettuce intercropping.
