Straipsnyje trumpai apžvelgiamos vokiečių masonų karinės ložės, aptariamos jų ištakos, raida bei šios humanistinius principus puoselėjusios brolijos požiūris į karą. Konkrečiau analizuojamos dvi 1916–1918 m. šiandieninės Lietuvos teritorijoje veikusios karinės ložės „Vokiečių sargyba prie Nemuno“ (Deutsche Wacht an der Memel) ir „Vilnius liepsnojančiam kalavijui“ (Wilna zum Flammenden Schwert). Tyrimo tikslas – pateikti šiek tiek daugiau informacijos apie šias labai menkai žinomas masonų ordino šakas bei joms priklausiusius narius. The article offers a brief overview of German military Masonic lodges, their origin, evolution, and the attitude towards the war of the fraternity, which was known to foster humanistic principles. Two military lodges, the German Guard on the River Nemunas (Deutsche Wacht an der Memel), and Vilnius for the Flaming Sword (Wilna zum Flammenden Schwert), which operated in present-day Lithuania from 1916 to 1918, are subjected to a detailed analysis. As can be seen from the preserved and rather fragmentary information, the influence of the Freemasons in the Oberost was most tangible in 1916. This was mainly due to the high positions held by some of the members in the occupying administration. The most influential included General Adalbert Wegner, the governor of Vilnius and the grand master of the Prussian Grand Lodge “The Three Globes”, and Walther Pusch, the burgermeister of Kaunas. Wegner’s early death prevented the spread of wider Masonic activities across Lithuania and to some extent implementation of more lax forms of governance as regards the local population, as it was in the case of W. Pusch, whose good relations with the locals amid the occupation was a rare exception. In general, at the end of 1915 and the beginning of 1916, there were signs that the influential Masonic brotherhood, who cherished humanistic ideals, were leaning towards a more liberal administration of the occupied territories, which went against the strict policies of the military administration under Erich Ludendorff. However, the removal of most Masons from higher positions, and the restriction of their activities, suggests that the German Freemasons placed obedience to their military superiors and the Fatherland higher than the Masonic humanism, and mostly confined themselves to rituals, general assemblies and leisure activities.

Straipsnyje, remiantis Lietuvos centrinio valstybės archyvo medžiaga ir prieškario Lietuvos periodiniais leidiniais, nagrinėjamas žydų tautybės vaikų mokymasis 1920 m. įsteigtoje Kauno vokiečių gimnazijoje. Atskleidžiami 1925 m. atsiradę nesutarimai tarp vokiečių ir žydų dėl smarkiai pakelto mokesčio už vaikų mokymąsi gimnazijoje ne vokiečių tautybės asmenims. Dar didesnę konfrontaciją sukėlė antisemitizmo politika nacių valdomoje Vokietijoje, paskatinusi Lietuvos žydų protestus ir vokiečių boikotą. Atskleidžiami žydų bendruomenės veiksmai paimant savo vaikus iš Kauno vokiečių gimnazijos 1933 m. pavasarį ir steigiant jiems atskirą mokyklą – Kauno žydų gimnaziją dėstomąja lietuvių kalba. The present study is aimed at exploring the reasons for founding Kaunas Jewish Gymnasium with the Lithuanian language of instruction as well as its wider historical context. The article is based on the materials found in the collections of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Lithuania and available at the Lithuanian Central State Archives; the periodical publications of that time were also made use of. The article draws the reader’s attention to the fact that in the period after the First World War, when the independent state of Lithuania was founded, ethnic minorities were provided with a possibility of establishing their own national schools. Those schools were also attended by students of other nationalities, including Lithuanians. However, that was not typical of Jewish schools, which were attended exclusively by Jewish children. When the German gymnasium was established in Kaunas, it was attended by more than a hundred of Jewish children and a smaller number of children of other nationalities. The tuition fee was the same for all, irrespective of the nationality. However, the situation changed in 1925: the school-supporting society passed into the hands of Germans and issued the regulation that children of other nationalities should pay over three times more. The parents of the students, who were mostly Jews, objected to that regulation though they were not in the capacity to change the discriminating situation. Thus the children continued to attend the gymnasium, and their parents were made to pay the high tuition fee. When national socialists came to power in Germany with their leader Adolf Hitler in the position of the chancellor, the anti-Semitic manifestations became more widespread. The Lithuanian Jewish community expressed solidarity with the Jews in Germany by organizing protest meetings and announcing boycott of Germans in Lithuania. Under the circumstances, with the confrontation between Jews and Germans growing, the tension between Jewish and German students and their parents in Kaunas German gymnasium was also growing. In the spring of 1933, on the demand of the Jewish community, Jewish parents resolved to take their children from the German gymnasium. Jewish students that no longer attended Kaunas German gymnasium could continue studying in other Jewish gymnasiums in Kaunas. However, since the majority did not know the Hebrew language, the decision was made to establish a separate gymnasium with the Lithuanian language of instruction. This privately-supported gymnasium, Kaunas Jewish gymnasium with the Lithuanian language of instruction, opened in September 1933 and survived till the Soviet occupation. As the numbers of students were not big, the gymnasium experienced a constant shortage of resources.

[...] The aim of the article is to reveal the relations between Lithuanian Germans and Lithuanian Evangelical Lutherans from 1918 to 1940. Abundant archival data, which for the most part is kept in the Lithuanian State Central Archives (LSCA), helped to reveal the topic under discussion. The data stored at the fund of the State Security Department (f. 378) of the said archives (monthly reviews and reports prepared by the political police) on the activities of Germans residing in Lithuania is especially valuable. The documents kept at the fund of the Ministry of Interior (f. 377) and other funds of the archives, as well as periodical press of that time were also used. According to the Lithuanian census of 1923, the religious distribution of local Germans (excluding those from Klaipėda Region), whose population at that time amounted to 29,231, was as follows: Roman Catholics – 207, Jews – 1, Evangelical Lutherans – 28,671 (it accounted for as much as 98.08 % of the total Lithuanian German population), Orthodox – 26, Evangelical Reformers – 212, Baptists – 48, Evangelical Methodists – 43, Free Evangelicals – 18, non-believers – 1, Adventists – 4. This census revealed that the counties of Tauragė, Vilkaviškis, Šiauliai, Kaunas, Šakiai, Marijampolė, Biržai were the largest centres of Evangelical Reformers in Lithuania. The research revealed that in the first decade of independence the domination of Germans in the Lithuanian Evangelical community was determined by the leading positions held for a long time by the representatives of this nationality in the Church of the Evangelical community of the country and the monopoly held by German Evangelical Lutheran priests in preaching the doctrine to believers (in the first years of independence the numbers of Lithuanian Evangelical Lutheran priests were very scarce), as well as a quantitative advantage of the German community (in 1923 Germans made up 43.06 %, Lithuanians – 33.51 %, Latvians – 20.36 % of the overall Evangelical Lutheran community, while the remaining small part of Evangelical Lutherans consisted of other nationalities and foreigners). However, in 1930s Germans lost their leading positions in the Lithuanian Evangelical Lutheran community. It was due to the strict position of the leadership of the Consistory of Lithuanian Evangelicals in their fight against Germanization among Evangelical Lutherans, the growth of the number of Lithuanian Evangelical Lutheran priests and the growing awareness of Lithuanian Evangelical Lutherans themselves in the struggle with German Evangelical Lutherans for their equal rights and the leading role in the aforementioned religious community.

Kauno vokiečių tautinės bendruomenės padėtis 1918-1940 m. buvo gana problematiška. Tyrėjai daugiausia susitelkė į Klaipėdos regiono vokiečių bendruomenės tyrimus, o Kauno vokiečiai nagrinėti mažai. To priežastimi galėtų būti duomenų trūkumas. Kita vertus, net ir nedidelė Kauno vokiečių bendruomenė verta atskiro tyrimo, nes jos nariai vaidino nemažą vaidmenį Lietuvos viešajame gyvenime. Tiriamuoju laikotarpiu vokiečiai sudarė 3,54 % visų Kauno gyventojų. Šis skaičius išliko stabilus iki XX a. trečiojo dešimtmečio pabaigos. Jie būrėsi į kultūrines, religines, sporto bei kitas organizacijas. Didžiausia Lietuvos vokiečių organizacija „Kulturverband“ taip pat veikė Kaune. Taigi, nedidelė Kauno vokiečių tautinė bendruomenė įkūrė net kelias organizacijas, tuo parodydama bendruomenės išskirtinumą ir gyvybingumą. Šie faktai leidžia teigti, kad Kauno vokiečiai buvo aktyvūs ir gerai organizuoti. Be to, matyti, kad aptariamuoju laikotarpiu Lietuvos vokiečių kultūrinė veikla nebuvo ribojama. The situation of the community of Kaunas Germans in 1918-1940 is rather problematic. Researchers have mostly focused on the investigation of the German minority in Klaipėda region, whereas the community of Kaunas Germans has been neglected so far. The reason for this situation could be small amount of the data. On the other hand, although not numerous, the community of Kaunas Germans is worth a separate investigation as it played a considerable role in the public life of Lithuania. The Germans of Kaunas constituted 3,54 % of all Kaunas citizens in the investigated period of time. The number of German origin people remained rather stable until the end of the third decade of the 20th century. They gathered into a variety of cultural, religious, sport and other organizations and societies. The leading community of Lithuanian Germans, Kulturverband, also operated in Kaunas. Thus, although relatively small, the national minority of Kaunas Germans established a number of organizations demonstrating the exceptionality and vitality of the community. These facts allow us to assume that Kaunas Germans were social and well organized. Moreover, it can be claimed that during the discussed period of time, the cultural activities of Lithuanian Germans were not restricted.

Miestiečių antspaudai yra svarbi miestų kultūros paveldo dalis. Daug antspaudų ir nedidelių dokumentų rinkinių prarasta gaisrų, karų bei kitų nelaimių metų. Tad kiekvienas išlikęs antspaudas yra labai vertingas. Dabar yra žinoma tik šešiolika XV a. pab.–XVII a. vid. antspaudų. Iš jų du – pareiginiai Kauno vaitų antspaudai. Likusieji antspaudai – privatūs (vadinami signetais): devyni priklausė lietuviams ir vietos vokiečiams, penki ar šeši – vokiečių pirklių, atvykusių į Kauną, antspaudai. Turint tiek mažai miestiečių antspaudų daryti išsamių apibendrinimų negalima, jie gali rodyti tik bendriausias Kauno miestietiškos sfragistikos raidos tendencijas. Remiantis išlikusiais antspaudais galima teigti, kad kauniečių antspauduose labai retos daiktinės arba mobiliosios figūros; čia, labiau negu kituose Lietuvos miestuose, vyravo linijiniai ženklai, kurių pagrindą sudarė strėlės, įvairių formų kabliai, kryžiai ir kitos linijų kombinacijos. Jos artimos kaimyninių kraštų miestiečių ir senajai Lietuvos kilmingųjų linijinei heraldikai. Gali būti, kad šeimos turėjo savo antspaudus ir perduodavo juos ateinančioms kartoms. Kaip ir kituose Lietuvos miestuose antspaudams naudotas žalias vaškas (kartais – natūralus). Išimtį sudaro nebent anonimo vokiečio 1512 m. raudono vaško antspaudas. Beveik visi kauniečių signetai pagaminti gerų meistrų, neretai jie meniškesni už smulkiosios ir net vidutinės bajorijos signetus. Tai rodo jų savininkų gerą skonį ir aukštą vietos meistrų profesinį lygį. Jei palyginsime vaitų pareigybinius antspaudus su privačiais miestiečių signetais, pastebėsime ne vien dydžio ir įrašų skirtumus. Miestiečių vaitų antspauduose virš skydo pavaizduotas šalmas su skraiste aiškiai pretendavo į tikrą herbą ir galbūt norą parodyti vaito aukštesnę padėtį miesto visuomenėje. Iš Karaliaučiaus atvykusio Kauno miestiečio Reinoldo Plato antspaudas yra dar ambicingesnis, jame pavaizduotas herbas su visa jo atributika. Signets of citizens are an important cultural heritage of our cities. A lot of signets and short document collections of citizens were lost during the fires, wars and other disasters. Therefore, each found signet is of great value. At present, only sixteen signets of the end of the 15th to the middle of the 17th centuries are known. Two of them belong to the category of official signets used by Kaunas vaitai. The rest of the signets are private: nine of them belonged to the Lithuanians and local Germans and five or six signets were owned by the German merchants who visited Kaunas. Such small number of signets can show only general development tendencies of Kaunas city sfragistics. Basing on the available evidence, material and mobile figures are uncommon in the signets of Kaunas citizens, whereas linear signs such as arrows, hooks of different forms, crosses and other linear combinations appear more often than in other cities of Lithuania. Such use of linear signs is similar to the signet tradition of citizens of neighboring countries and heraldry of the old Lithuanian nobility. It is possible that families had their specific signs which were passed from generation to generation. As well as in other cities of Lithuania, green wax (more seldom natural) was used for seals. A red wax seal of anonym German person dated 1512 is an exception. Nearly all signets of Kaunas citizens are of good quality and are often more artistic than some signets of nobility. Such fact evidences good taste of the owners of signets and high professional standards of the local craftsmen. Comparing the official signets of vaitai and private signets of citizens, a number of differences other than size and inscriptions can be noticed. A helmet with mantle above the shield described in vaitai signets exposes pretensions to the real blazon and, possibly, an intention to show the higher status of vaitas in the city society. The signet of Kaunas citizen Reinoldas Platas (coming from Karaliaucius) is even more pretentious as it depicts a blazon with full attributes.

Straipsnyje atskleidžiamas vokiečių dalyvavimas Kauno miesto gyvenime, o tuo pačiu ir valdyme. Nuo senų laikų vokiečiai gyveno Kaune. Dėl savo stiprių pozicijų miesto savivaldoje vokiečiai buvo renkami į aukščiausius savivaldos postus – burmistrus, tarėjus. Apie tai yra pateikta nemažai informacijos, tik mažiau yra žinoma apie XX amžiuje vokiečių dalyvavimą Kauno miesto savivaldos darbe. Šis laikotarpis nėra atskirai nagrinėtas. Istoriografijoje apie vokiečius kalbama tik tuo atveju, kai yra pateikiama bendra informacija apie miesto savivaldybės rinkimus. Minima, kai yra pateikiamos išrinktų atstovų pavardės, skaičiai. Pasitaikydavo atvejų, kai pateikiamos vokiečių pavardės būdavo netikslios arba iškreiptos. Autorius savo tikslu laiko straipsnyje aptarti vokiečių tautinės mažumos dalyvavimą Kauno miesto tarybos rinkimuose, o taip pat ir savivaldybės darbe. Analizuojamas vokiečių atstovų skaičiaus kitimas miesto taryboje. Nagrinėjama, kokie buvo vokiečių ir tautybių atstovų tarpusavio santykiai. Rengiant straipsnį, buvo naudotasi Kauno apskrities archyve saugomais dokumentais. Analizuoti rinkimų, vykusių posėdžių protokolai ir kt. Pasinaudota duomenimis iš Lietuvos centrinio valstybės archyvo Savivaldybių departamento fondo ir kt. Išskirtinai naudingas, rašant straipsnį, buvo vokiečių tautinės mažumos Kaune leistas savaitraštis. Pastebima, kad vokiečių atstovai Kauno savivaldybės taryboje labai rūpinosi vokiškų mokyklų reikalais ir kitais vokiečių interesus ginančiais sprendimais. The article reveals the participation of Germans in Kaunas' life and administration. From the old times Germans lived in Kaunas. Because of their strong positions in the town's self-government, Germans were appointed to the highest positions of the self-government, ex.: burgomasters, lay judges. There is a lot of information about it. A little less is known about the participation of Germans in the work of Kaunas self-government. The period was not separately analysed. The historiography includes information about Germans just in case it provides general information about the election to the town's municipality. It is mentioned that the names and numbers of the elected representatives were provided. There were cases where the provided names of Germans were incorrect. According to the author, an aim of the article is to discuss the participation of the German national minority into the election of Kaunas board and the activities of the municipality. The change of the number of German representatives in the town's board and the relationship between Germans and national representatives are analysed. While preparing the article, the documents stored in the archive of Kaunas district were used. The reports of election, meetings and etc. were analysed. Also, the data from the Fund of the Municipalities' Department of the Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania and others were used. While writing the article, a weekly published by a German national minority in Kaunas had an exceptional importance. It was noticed that German representatives in Kaunas municipality board were taking a good care of the issues of German schools and other decisions protecting the interests of Germans.

1923–1939 m. Klaipėdos kraštas autonomijos teisėmis priklausė Lietuvai, bet ekonominį, kultūrinį, politinį gyvenimą jame iš esmės modeliavo Lietuvos–Vokietijos interesų kova dėl įtakos krašte. Lietuvos politiką įtakojo ir Didžiosios Lietuvos lietuvių bei klaipėdiškių/lietuvininkų tarpusavio bendravimo ir supratimo problema. Straipsnio tikslas – remiantis Lietuviškųjų organizacijų komiteto veikla (1934–1939), atskleisti didlietuvių ir klaipėdiškių/lietuvininkų santykius bei Lietuvos valstybės politiką Klaipėdos krašte. Valdžios vykdyta krašto atlietuvinimo politika išryškino Kauno vyriausybės maksimalizmą ir didino trintį tarp Didžiosios Lietuvos lietuvių ir klaipėdiškių. Vienu iš Klaipėdos krašto gubernatoriaus J. Navako ideologinės veiklos rezultatų tapo 1934 m. pradžioje įkurtas Lietuviškųjų organizacijų komitetas, siekęs koordinuoti visų lietuvių organizacijų veiklą, apimti visus krašto lietuvių visuomenės kultūrinius, ekonominius ir politinius reikalus ir taip stiprinti klaipėdiškių lietuviškąsias valstybines aspiracijas. Trintį tarp klaipėdiškių ir didlietuvių stiprino pastarųjų nepasitikėjimas klaipėdiškiais dėl jų „netikro” lietuviškumo, siekiant juos išeliminuoti iš krašto valdymo ir tai stiprino klaipėdiškių nusivylimą Lietuvos valstybės politika. 1938–1939 m. sandūroje ryškėjo Lietuvos pralaimėjimas finansinėje ir politinėje kovoje prieš Vokietiją. Vietos gyventojai kasdien veikiami vokiškosios propagandos ir nematydami jiems siūlomų klaipėdiškio tapatumo išsaugojimo alternatyvų lietuviškoje veikloje, pereidavo į jiems labiau pažįstamą vokiškumo pusę. Klaipėda district belonged to the State of Lithuania as autonomy in 1923–1939. The economical, cultural and politic life was under the Lithuanian-German struggle of interests in this region. The policy of Lithuanian State government concerning this autonomy was influenced by Lithuanian–German interstate relationships, as well as by problem of co-existence and reciprocal understanding of local lietuvininkai and didlietuviai (Lithuanians from Lithuania – major) people. The aim of the article is to show the relations between local lietuvininkai and didlietuviai and to explain the Lithuanian State policy in Lithuania Minor with the help of historical experience of the activities of the Committee of Lithuanian Organizations at that time (1934–1939). The policy of back-lithuanization of Klaipėda-Minor people developed the maximalism of Kaunas government and determined the increasing conflicts between Lithuanians from Lithuania-Major and lietuvininkai people in Klaipėda district, Lithuania Minor. The result of Mr. J. Navakas (the Governor of Klaipėda land) ideological activities was the establishment of the Committee of Lithuanian Organizations in Klaipėda in 1934. The idea and the main goal of this Committee were to coordinate activities between all Lithuanian organizations. The misunderstanding between lietuvininkai and didlietuviai was also based on mistrust of lietuvininkai as ‘not real Lithuanians’ on the side of didlietuviai. The real overturn came to Lithuanization policy in the late 1938–early 1939 years. Financial and political powers on German side were much stronger.

Vokiečių filosofijos daktaro Vokietijos ir Lietuvos santykių XX a. ir nacionalsocializmo istorijos tyrinėtojo Joachimo Tauberio (Joachim Tauber), straipsnyje, remiantis fiktyvia jauno lietuvio, kuris straipsnyje vadinamas Juozu Petraičiu, biografija, bandoma parodyti būdingą gyvenimo istoriją, atspindinčią ypatingą šio laikotarpio Lietuvos istorijos problematiką. Juozas Petraitis vaizduojams kaip asmuo, nesantis nei pasipriešinimo, nei kolaborantų vadovybėje, jis pateikiamas kaip netiesioginis holokausto dalyvis. Veiksmas perkeliamas į mažą miestelį, kadangi Kaune ir Vilniuje viešpatavo kitos aplinkybės. Pastaruoju metu lietuvių dalyvavimas žydų žudynėse vis dažniau atsiduria istorinių tyrimų ir lietuvių visuomenės dėmesio centre. Šiuo straipsniu autorius pirmiausia siekia išjudinti diskusijas, kadangi pastarosioms vis labiau gresia uždusimas kategoriškose klišėse „arba-arba“. Būtent dėl to straipsnyje svarbiausi yra Juozo Petraičio vidiniai prieštaravimai „tarp laisvės kovos ir masinių žudynių“, kuriuos lietuvių visuomenė iki šiol laiko nesuderinamais (vienas kitą eliminuojančiais). Iš įvairių gyvenimo linijų ir prisiminimų suprojektuota gyvenimo istorija, be abejonės, leidžia daryti ypatingą, tačiau kaip tik dėl to ir jaudinantį bei įdomų pastebėjimą dėl individo ir kolektyvo santykio. The article by a German doctor of philosophy and researcher of German-Lithuanian relations of the 20th c. and the history of national socialism Joachim Tauber, based on a fictional biography of a young Lithuanian referred in the article as to Juozas Petraitis, attempts to demonstrate a typical life story reflecting typical issues of this period in the history of Lithuania. Juozas Petraitis is presented as a person outside the heads of the resistance or collaborates, but as an indirect participant of the Holocaust. The action takes place in a small town, since Kaunas and Vilnius were facing other circumstances. Lithuanians’ involvement in massacres of Jews has recently been increasingly attracting attention of historical research and Lithuanian society. The author of this article seeks to encourage discussions, since the latter face a prospect of being suppressed by categorical clichés “or–or”. This is the reason why Juozas Petraitis inner contradictions “between fights for freedom and massacres”, which Lithuanian society still considers to be not reconciled, are the most significant in the article. This life story is constructed from various life paths and recollections. It allows making a peculiar yet thrilling and interesting observation on the relations between an individual and community.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos vokiečių vidurinės mokyklos Lietuvoje 1918-1940 metais. Siekta išanalizuoti vokiečių progimnazijų ir gimnazijų tinklo pokyčius bei jų priežastis, taip pat išsiaiškinti šių mokyklų finansavimo šaltinius, jų materialinę būklę, atskleisti vokiečių vidurinių mokyklų ypatumus, bendrais bruožais aptarti jų ugdymo proceso vertinimus. 1920 m. vokiečių iniciatyva buvo įsteigta gimnazija Kaune, 1924 m. (neoficialiai nuo 1922 m.) progimnazija Šiauliuose ir 1926 m. – Kybartų progimnazija. Kauno gimnazija buvo uždaryta 1941 m. pavasarį, kuomet vokiečiai repatrijavo iš Sovietų Sąjungos. Sumažėjus moksleivių 1935 m. vokiečiams teko uždaryti Šiaulių progimnaziją. Sumažėjo mokinių ir Kybartų progimnazijoje, tačiau ji, atrodo, veikė iki sovietų okupacijos. Visos vokiečių vidurinės mokyklos buvo privačios, todėl jos turėjo išsilaikyti iš savo lėšų. Šių mokyklų pagrindinis finansavimo šaltinis buvo Lietuvos vokiečių kultūros sąjunga, Švietimo ministerija visą laiką finansiškai rėmė Kauno vokiečių gimnaziją ir kelerius metus skyrė pašalpas Kybartų progimnazijai; Šiaulių progimnazijai paramos neskyrė, nes joje mokėsi per mažai mokinių. Dėl tos priežasties mokyklos materialinė būklė buvo blogiausia iš visų minėtų mokyklų. Vokiečių vidurines mokyklas lankė ir žydų vaikai, kurie po 1933 m. masiškai iš jų išėjo. Švietimo vadovai nepalankiai vertino tokį mišrų mokinių kontingentą. Taip pat jiems kėlė susirūpinimą vokiečių vaikai, kurie lankė Prūsijos mokyklas ir buvo jose ugdomi Lietuvai priešiška dvasia. The German Gymnasium in Kaunas was founded in1920 and dosed in the spring of 1941. The article, therefore, aims to describe the tendencies in the change of students' number, the reasons for these changes as well as the sources of school funding. The official opinion of the Ministry of Education about the process of education (which was evaluated favourably) is presented too. The junior Gymnasium in Šiauliai, which existed from 1922 to 1935, was one of the smallest in Lithuania (the largest number or students in it was 48, 18 of them being Jewish). The Lithuanian-German Cultural Union tried to preserve this school but because of the small number of students the junior Gymnasium was finally closed on the Union's initiative. There was another junior Gymnasium founded in Kybartai in 1920, which had a larger number of students but in the end it was also closed as the number of students got gradually smaller. There were 101 students in 1932, 38 students in 1936, 25 students in1937, but in I 939 there were not enough students left even to open one separate class. One of the reasons why the number of students got so drastically small was related to Prussian schools, which were attended by the German students living dose 10 the border. There are some facts available which prove that Lithuanian German schools used to receive support from Germany.
