Observations of Jupiter's nightside airglow (nightglow) and aurora obtained during the flyby of the New Horizons spacecraft show an unexpected lack of ultraviolet nightglow emissions, in contrast to the case during the Voyager flybys in 1979. The flux and average energy of precipitating electrons generally decrease with increasing local time across the nightside, consistent with a possible source region along the dusk flank of Jupiter's magnetosphere. Visible emissions associated with the interaction of Jupiter and its satellite Io extend to a surprisingly high altitude, indicating localized low-energy electron precipitation. These results indicate that the interaction between Jupiter's upper atmosphere and near-space environment is variable and poorly understood; extensive observations of the day side are no guide to what goes on at night.

Using images at multiple mid‐infrared wavelengths, acquired in 2018 May using the Very Large Telescope Imager and Spectrometer (VISIR) instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), we study Jupiter's pole‐to‐pole thermal, chemical and aerosol structure in the troposphere and stratosphere. We confirm that the pattern of cool and cloudy anticyclonic zones and warm cloud‐free cyclonic belts persists throughout the mid‐latitudes, up to the polar boundaries, and evidence a strong correlation with the vertical maximum windshear and the locations of Jupiter's zonal jets. At high latitudes, VISIR images reveal a large region of mid‐infrared cooling poleward ∼64°N and ∼67°S extending from the upper troposphere to the stratosphere, co‐located with the reflective aerosols observed by JunoCam, and suggesting that aerosols play a key role in the radiative cooling at the poles. Comparison of zonal‐mean thermal properties and high‐resolution visible imaging from Juno allows us to study the variability of atmospheric properties as a function of altitude and jet boundaries, particularly in the cold southern polar vortex. However, the southern stratospheric polar vortex is partly masked by a warm mid‐infrared signature of the aurora. Co‐located with the southern main auroral oval, this warming results from the auroral precipitation and/or joule heating which heat the atmosphere and thus cause a significant stratospheric emission. This high emission results from a large enhancement of both ethane and acetylene in the polar region, reinforcing the evidence of enhanced ion‐related chemistry in Jupiter's auroral regions. Plain Language Summary: A fundamental inquiry driving NASA's Juno mission was the investigation of the potential changes of Jupiter's famous banded structure below the top most clouds. As NASA's Juno spacecraft lacks instrumentation sensitive to the mid‐infrared, we have used the ground‐based Very Large Telescope Imager and Spectrometer (VISIR) on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) to support the mission since 2016. The 2018 May data set provides a comprehensive view of Jupiter's pole‐to‐pole thermal, chemical, and aerosol structure; including the Great Red Spot; and the auroral‐related heating in the southern polar stratosphere. We show that the alternating pattern of cool cloudy zones and warm cloud‐free belts correlate to the zonal winds locations, extends from the equator to the boundary of the polar vortices (∼64°N and ∼67°S). Comparing this ground‐based data set with Juno observations, we show that the polar regions experience radiative cooling from the upper troposphere to the stratosphere, probably induced by the reflective polar aerosols, and confined at the poles by the polar vortices. However, the southern stratospheric polar vortex is partly masked by a large auroral emission, a signature of an interaction between the magnetosphere and stratosphere of Jupiter, which causes a ∼20 K warming as deep as the middle stratosphere. Excess hydrocarbons within the polar domain reinforces the evidence of enhanced ion‐related chemistry in Jupiter's auroral regions, resulting from charged particles precipitating from the top of the atmosphere to lower altitudes. Cloud‐tracked wind observations document the role of eddies in putting momentum into the zonal jets. Chemical tracers, lightning, clouds, and temperature anomalies document the rising and sinking in the belts and zones, but questions remain about what drives the flow between the belts and zones. We suggest an additional role for the eddies, which is to generate waves that propagate both up and down from the cloud layer. When the waves break they deposit momentum and thereby replace the friction forces at solid boundaries that enable overturning circulations on terrestrial planets. By depositing momentum of one sign within the cloud layer and momentum of the opposite sign above and below the clouds, the eddies maintain all components of the circulation, including the stacked, oppositely rotating cells between each belt‐zone pair, and the zonal jets themselves. But the circulation cells with rising, sinking, and cross‐latitude motion are just as important because they maintain the storms and turbulent eddies. We use ground‐based mid‐infrared (8–20 μm) data acquired by three different instruments between 2005 and 2008 to characterize the variability of tropospheric temperature and aerosol opacity during the 2006–2007 Equatorial Zone disturbance. This disturbance is part of a repeating pattern of cloud‐clearing events at Jupiter's equator, observed as a significant brightening at 5 μm (sensing the 2‐ to 7‐bar region) and darkening at visible wavelengths (sensing the ∼0.7‐bar pressure level). The data reveal a brightness temperature increase of ∼3.1 K between 2005 and February 2007 at 8.6‐μm sensing tropospheric aerosol opacity and temperature near 0.6–0.8 bar. At wavelengths sensing tropospheric ammonia and temperatures between 150 and 600 mbar, the brightness temperature remains largely invariant between 2005 and 2008. The tropospheric vertical temperature profile and the tropospheric aerosol opacity were derived from images captured in different filters on four different dates, one for each year. The retrieved aerosol opacity at ∼0.6–0.8 bar shows a decrease at 2–5°S of ∼45% in 2006 and ∼65% in 2007, with respect to 2008. This is consistent with cloud clearing/thinning during the coloration of the Equatorial Zone at visible wavelengths. This brightening at 8.6 μm started in 2005 and preceded the brightening at 5 μm, which started in April 2006. The results also suggest that cloud clearing during the Equatorial Zone disturbances is not simply the result of tropospheric warming, at least at p < 0.7 bar. We propose that cloud clearing occurs due to a decrease in the ammonia gas upwelling at the equator. Observations of Jupiter's deep atmosphere by the Juno spacecraft have revealed several puzzling facts: The concentration of ammonia is variable down to pressures of tens of bars and is strongly dependent on latitude. While most latitudes exhibit a low abundance, the Equatorial Zone of Jupiter has an abundance of ammonia that is high and nearly uniform with depth. In parallel, the Equatorial Zone is peculiar for its absence of lightning, which is otherwise prevalent most everywhere else on the planet. We show that a model accounting for the presence of small‐scale convection and water storms originating in Jupiter's deep atmosphere accounts for the observations. Where strong thunderstorms are observed on the planet, we estimate that the formation of ammonia‐rich hail ("mushballs") and subsequent downdrafts can deplete efficiency the upper atmosphere of its ammonia and transport it efficiently to the deeper levels. In the Equatorial Zone, the absence of thunderstorms shows that this process is not occurring, implying that small‐scale convection can maintain a near‐homogeneity of this region. A simple model satisfying mass and energy balance accounts for the main features of Juno's microwave radiometer observations and successfully reproduces the inverse correlation seen between ammonia abundance and the lightning rate as function of latitude. We predict that in regions where ammonia is depleted, water should also be depleted to great depths. The fact that condensates are not well mixed by convection until far deeper than their condensation level has consequences for our understanding of Jupiter's deep interior and of giant‐planet atmospheres in general. Plain Language Summary: Measurements by the Juno spacecraft have shown that much more ammonia is present in Jupiter's atmosphere near the equator than at higher latitudes. This was never predicted by theory. In a companion paper, we showed that ammonia can combine with water to form hail‐like particles that we call "mushballs." Here we show that mushball formation in storms can effectively dry out the atmosphere of its ammonia. Our idea is supported by lack of lightning activity at the equator compared to higher latitudes. Because lightning is generated in rainstorms, the lack of lightning at the equator suggests that the thunderstorms forming the mushballs responsible for the depletion of ammonia are not present there. In contrast, in other regions where lightning is present, we predict that not only ammonia but also water are depleted to great depths, more than a hundred kilometers below the cloud tops. The complexity of Jupiter's meteorology means we must expect similar complexity in observing the weather on other giant planets in and beyond our solar system. In the first 20 orbits of the Juno spacecraft around Jupiter, we have identified a variety of wave‐like features in images made by its public‐outreach camera, JunoCam. Because of Juno's unprecedented and repeated proximity to Jupiter's cloud tops during its close approaches, JunoCam has detected more wave structures than any previous surveys. Most of the waves appear in long wave packets, oriented east‐west and populated by narrow wave crests. Spacing between crests were measured as small as ~30 km, shorter than any previously measured. Some waves are associated with atmospheric features, but others are not ostensibly associated with any visible cloud phenomena and thus may be generated by dynamical forcing below the visible cloud tops. Some waves also appear to be converging, and others appear to be overlapping, possibly at different atmospheric levels. Another type of wave has a series of fronts that appear to be radiating outward from the center of a cyclone. Most of these waves appear within 5° of latitude from the equator, but we have detected waves covering planetocentric latitudes between 20°S and 45°N. The great majority of the waves appear in regions associated with prograde motions of the mean zonal flow. Juno was unable to measure the velocity of wave features to diagnose the wave types due to its close and rapid flybys. However, both by our own upper limits on wave motions and by analogy with previous measurements, we expect that the waves JunoCam detected near the equator are inertia‐gravity waves. Plain Language Summary: JunoCam, the visible camera on the Juno spacecraft orbiting Jupiter, has detected hundreds of small‐scale waves and wave‐like features, some as small as 30 km, shorter than ever measured before. Some waves appear near larger features, which may be associated with their origin, but others must be the result of winds hidden beneath the clouds. Most of the waves appear like long trains of narrow, parallel lines, but there is a wide variety of other types of wave‐like features. The latitude-altitude map of ammonia mixing ratio shows an ammonia-rich zone at 0-5°N, with mixing ratios of 320-340 ppm, extending from 40-60 bars up to the ammonia cloud base at 0.7 bars. Ammonia-poor air occupies a belt from 5-20°N. We argue that downdrafts as well as updrafts are needed in the 0-5°N zone to balance the upward ammonia flux. Outside the 0-20°N region, the belt-zone signature is weaker. At latitudes out to ±40°, there is an ammonia-rich layer from cloud base down to 2 bars that we argue is caused by falling precipitation. Below, there is an ammonia-poor layer with a minimum at 6 bars. Unanswered questions include how the ammonia-poor layer is maintained, why the belt-zone structure is barely evident in the ammonia distribution outside 0-20°N, and how the internal heat is transported through the ammonia-poor layer to the ammonia cloud base. High signal-to-noise images of Jupiter were made at wavelengths between 13.2 and 22.8 µm in five separate observing runs between 1996 June and 1997 November at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. Maps of Jupiter’s upper-tropospheric temperatures at pressures of 100 and 400 mbar were made from these images. We use the relatively frequent, well sampled data sets to examine in detail the short-term evolution of the temperature structure. Our 2–6 month sampling periods demonstrate that the longitudinal temperature structures evolve significantly in these short periods and exhibit wave features. Using a three-dimensional general circulation model simulation of Jupiter’s upper atmosphere, we show that the thermal structures are consistent with convectively generated Rossby waves that propagate upward from the lower to the upper atmosphere. Jupiter's tropospheric ammonia (NH3) abundance is studied using spatially resolved 5 μm observations from the cryogenic high-resolution infrared spectrograph (CRIRES) at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. The high-resolving power ( R = 96,000) allows the line shapes of three NH3 absorption features to be resolved. We find that within the 1-4 bar pressure range, the NH3 abundance decreases with altitude. The instrument slit was aligned north-south along Jupiter's central meridian, allowing us to search for latitudinal variability. There is considerable uncertainty in the large-scale latitudinal variability, as the increase in cloud opacity in zones compared to belts can mask absorption features. However, we do find evidence for a strong NH3 enhancement at 4-6°N, consistent with a localized 'ammonia plume' on the southern edge of Jupiter's North Equatorial Belt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent work by Sromovsky et al. (2017) suggested that all red colour in Jupiter's atmosphere could be explained by a single colour-carrying compound, a so-called 'universal chromophore'. We tested this hypothesis on ground-based spectroscopic observations in the visible and near-infrared (480–930 nm) from the VLT/MUSE instrument between 2014 and 2018, retrieving a chromophore absorption spectrum directly from the North Equatorial Belt, and applying it to model spatial variations in colour, tropospheric cloud and haze structure on Jupiter. We found that we could model both the belts and the Great Red Spot of Jupiter using the same chromophore compound, but that this chromophore must exhibit a steeper blue-absorption gradient than the proposed chromophore of Carlson et al. (2016). We retrieved this chromophore to be located no deeper than 0. 2 ± 0. 1 bars in the Great Red Spot and 0. 7 ± 0. 1 bars elsewhere on Jupiter. However, we also identified some spectral variability between 510 nm and 540 nm that could not be accounted for by a universal chromophore. In addition, we retrieved a thick, global cloud layer at 1. 4 ± 0. 3 bars that was relatively spatially invariant in altitude across Jupiter. We found that this cloud layer was best characterised by a real refractive index close to that of ammonia ice in the belts and the Great Red Spot, and poorly characterised by a real refractive index of 1.6 or greater. This may be the result of ammonia cloud at higher altitude obscuring a deeper cloud layer of unknown composition. • Properties of cloud and chromophore on Jupiter derived from hyperspectral data. • Characteristics found of a chromophore that can model all Jovian colour. • Derived chromophore has steeper blue-absorption than previous lab spectra. • Chromophore is located above 0.2 ± 0.03 bars in the GRS and above 0.6 ± 0.1 bars in the belts. • The deepest visible cloud base is consistently retrieved at 1.4 ± 0.3 bars. On May 31, 2020 a short-lived convective storm appeared in one of the small cyclones of Jupiter's South Temperate Belt (STB) at planetographic latitude 30.8°S. The outbreak was captured by amateur astronomer Clyde Foster in methane-band images, became widely known as Clyde's Spot, and was imaged at very high resolution by the Junocam instrument on board the Juno mission 2.5 days later. Junocam images showed a white two-lobed cyclonic system with high clouds observed in the methane-band at 890 nm. The storm evolved over a few days to become a dark feature that showed turbulence for months, presented oscillations in its drift rate, and slowly expanded, first into a Folded Filamentary Region (FFR), and later into a turbulent segment of the STB over a timescale of one year. On August 7, 2021, a new storm strikingly similar to Clyde's Spot erupted in a cyclone of the STB. The new storm exhibited first a similar transformation into a turbulent dark feature, and later transformed into a dark cyclone fully formed by January 2022. We compare the evolution into a FFR of Clyde's Spot with the formation of a FFR observed by Voyager 2 in 1979 in the South South Temperate Belt (SSTB) after a convective outburst in a cyclone that also developed a two-lobed shape. We also discuss the contemporaneous evolution of an additional cyclone of the STB, which was similar to the one were Clyde's Spot developed. This cyclone did not exhibit visible internal convective activity, and transformed from pale white in 2019, with low contrast with the environment, to dark red in 2020, and thus, was very similar to the outcome of the second storm. This cyclone became bright again in 2021 after interacting with Oval BA. We present observations of these phenomena obtained by amateur astronomers, ground-based telescopes, Hubble Space Telescope and Junocam. This study reveals that short-lived small storms that are active for only a few days can produce complex long-term changes that extend over much larger areas than those initially covered by the storms.
