Staff and budget cutbacks and systemic changes in news media have been widely documented by journalists and scholars, and this qualitative study aims to understand the empirical experience of journalists outside the cities, where isolation, small staff, tight budgets and close communities are the rule. This article reports on part of a study that investigated the experience of journalists in remote and regional media outlets in Queensland and New South Wales. This article explores the more pointed ethical difficulties journalists experience in regional areas, finding these conundrums add layers to decision-making and complexity in the source–journalist relationships. Journalists in regional and remote areas report feeling pressure to take shortcuts in their story writing due to time restraints, to sensationalise or angle stories to suit management agendas, or to write clickbait headlines. This research is based on the notions of diaspora, press, and digital communication, whose intersection now points to a specific scenario. A scenario of circulations composed at the same time by people, places, technologies, communication organs and symbolic forms. Complex and multidimensional geography, linked by subjectivities and communicative processes, which also includes regional newspapers, traditionally considered as an important link in the Portuguese diaspora. In this article, we ask what journalistic coverage is given to diaspora by the regional media in a context already marked by the digitalization and the emigration of new generations. To this end, we undertook a content analysis in the online editions of eleven media outlets in the center region. Based on a corpus of 170 pieces on emigration and through a set of variables, we observe that the regional media continue to cover journalism in the diaspora limited in time, highlighting the actors and institutional agents and relegating, in many situations to the background, the role and voice of emigrants. Despite the opportunities introduced by digital technologies, we find that journalistic projects have not taken advantage of these possibilities to create a new "network of correspondents" and other ways to interact with emigrants, thus maintaining limited access to the diaspora. The proposed reflection is a derivation of the research project developed with the Postgraduate Program Master in Journalism of Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa that has as object of analysis journalistic digital initiatives that are self-nominated independent. The reflection of this article is based on the objective of understanding the participation of these independent initiatives of journalism located in digital platforms in the process of preservation and assistance of the cultural expressions of marginalized cultures. In theoretical contribution, concepts of hegemonic culture, suppression of regional identities, folklore, marginalized groups and the role of the opinion leader or, in an updated context, the activist mediator are approached. This article reports a pilot study which investigated the relationship between regional journalism and social capital in two regional locations in the Australian state of South Australia, and one in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The study aimed to explore the role of local media in facilitating community communication and understanding, and, through this, to shed light on their possible contribution to regional social capital. Although social capital is a contested notion, the article argues that most definitions can be placed into one of three broad categories, and that the results of the study suggest that local media facilitate connectivity in terms of each of these understandings.A number of themes emerged during the study which help to clarify and illuminate the role of regional media in setting the communication context for social capital. At the same time, however, the ways in which local journalists approached their work raised a number of professional and ethical issues. The article concludes that, despite these difficulties, local media at the sites studied appear to facilitate communication between different sections of the community to the benefit of that community, and to contribute to the development of social capital. This paper adopts a system of professions perspective from the sociology of work to assess efforts by Russian regional journalists to redefine the purposes and standards of journalism in an increasingly constraining political and economic environment. Data from interviews and observations at four newspapers in a central Russian province reveal that journalists at these papers have responded to pressures in varied ways, suggesting fragmentation in the occupation. Journalists who came of age during perestroika now avoid public issue reporting, but they seek to maintain jurisdiction over journalistic work by serving as “in-house communicators” for officials, by advising readers on everyday individual needs, and by focusing on literary writing or moral education.
