Abstract: A double SQUID qubit (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) can be handled by applying microwave trains, but also by using fast flux pulses. In this second case the manipulation is based on the fast and radical modification of the qubit potential shape that induces non-adiabatic transitions between the computational states (the two lowest energy eigenstates), still avoiding transitions to upper levels. This modality is interesting because it allows faster operations with respect to other techniques, but also because it gives access to interesting nontrivial physical features, concerning in particular decoherence and adiabaticity. About decoherence, we observed experimentally the existence of an “optimal” bias region and the transition between two distinct decoherence regimes. These results can be explained by considering the effect of first and second order slow fluctuations which dominate on high frequency noise contributions. This allows a deep insight in the qubit decoherence mechanisms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We have measured the rate of escape out of the zero-voltage state in Josephson tunnel junctions as a function of the applied magnetic field. A marked difference is found in the behaviour of long and small junctions. In all cases, the statistical distribution of the switching currents can be described using a Kramers model for the escape process, where the barrier to be overcome is the Josephson barrier and the activation energy is due to an effective temperature T/sub e/. For small junctions T/sub e/ coincides, as expected, with the thermodynamic temperature, regardless of the applied magnetic field. For long junctions instead it is found that the escape temperature depends markedly on the magnetic field and on the junction geometry (inline or overlap), suggesting a close relationship with the magnetic field distribution inside the junction. Abstract: The properties of the activation potential of a Josephson interferometer are investigated under the effect of external microwave signals. In particular, we measure the effects of the microwaves on an interferometer having a low inductance. Using as a probing tool thermal escape techniques we find that the plasma frequency excitations of this system when exposed to the radiation field are well described by a double-pendulum equation under the same ac biasing conditions. We discuss the results within the framework of the recent investigations on macroscopic quantum coherence. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
