Il volume, diviso in due parti e articolato in 17 capitoli, è il primo interamente dedicato al lessico del dialetto di Roma e a problemi di etimologia romanesca, affrontati a seconda dell'argomento da prospettive e con metodi diversi. Nella maggior parte dei contributi si discutono singoli lessemi o espressioni; in altri si muove invece da testi antichi, meno antichi, o recenti. Altri ancora si esercitano su questioni generali quali l'ambito operativo dell'etimologia capitolina o la patente di «romaneschità» attribuita a questa o quella parola da scriventi del passato. Alcuni saggi, sempre in relazione a lessemi specifici, esplorano temi strutturali quali il cambio di categoria lessicale in contesto di grammaticalizzazione o l'integrazione dei prestiti; in un caso si retrodata l'emersione di una parola funzionale quale la particella allocutiva «a». Centro dell'interesse del volume è, ovviamente, il dialetto dell'Urbe, cui però ci si accosta senza trascurare mai il panorama (italo-)romanzo. Si fornisce così agli studiosi un originale punto di osservazione delle complesse vicende «interne» ed «esterne» della lingua di Roma, già oggetto di analisi approfondite, ma finora mai sistematicamente indagate in prospettiva lessicologica ed etimologica.

In many European languages the National Standard Variety is converging with spoken, informal, and socially marked varieties. In Italian this process is giving rise to a new standard variety called Neo-standard Italian, which partly consists of regional features. This book contributes to current research on standardization in Europe by offering a comprehensive overview of the re-standardization dynamics in Italian. Each chapter investigates a specific dynamic shaping the emergence of Neo-standard Italian and Regional Standard Varieties, such as the acceptance of previously non-standard features, the reception of Old Italian features excluded from the standard variety, the changing standard language ideology, the retention of features from Italo-Romance dialects, the standardization of patterns borrowed from English, and the developmental tendencies of standard Italian in Switzerland. The contributions investigate phonetic/phonological, prosodic, morphosyntactic, and lexical phenomena, addressed by several empirical methodologies and theoretical vantage points. This work is of interest to scholars and students working on language variation and change, especially those focusing on standard languages and standardization dynamics.

This book examines diachronic change and diversity in the morphosyntax of Romance varieties spoken in Italy. These varieties offer an especially fertile terrain for research into language change, because of both the richness of dialectal variation and the length of the period of textual attestation. While attention in the past has been focussed on the variation found in phonology, morphology, and vocabulary, this volume examines variation in morphosyntactic structures, covering a range of topics designed to exploit and explore the interaction of the geographical and historical dimensions of change. The opening chapter sets the scene for specialist and non-specialist readers alike, and establishes the conceptual and empirical background. There follow a series of case studies investigating the morphosyntax of verbal and (pro)nominal constructions and the organization of the clause. Data are drawn from the full range of Romance dialects spoken within the borders of modern Italy, ranging from Sicily and Sardinia through to Piedmont and Friuli. Some of the studies narrow the focus to a particular construction within a particular dialect; others broaden out to compare different patterns of evolution within different dialects. There is also diversity in the theoretical frameworks adopted by the various contributors. The book aims to take stock of both the current state of the field and the fruits of recent research, and to set out new results and new questions to help move forward the frontiers of that research. It will be a valuable resource not only for those specializing in the study of Italo-Romance varieties, but also for other Romanists and for those interested in exploring and understanding the mechanisms of morphosyntactic change more generally.

Il presente volume in omaggio a Heidi Siller-Runggaldier, professoressa di linguistica italiana dell'Università di Innsbruck (Austria), comprende più di 40 saggi incentrati sull'architettura in senso linguistico: dopo la prima sezione sull'architettura della lingua italiana ovvero sull'insieme delle sue variazioni a livello diacronico, diatopico, diastratico, diafasico e diamesico, segue una seconda sezione i cui contributi riguardano l'architettura linguistica dell'Italia, ovvero la situazione linguistica in Italia e le diverse lingue minoritarie parlate sul territorio italiano (per esempio il ladino, il friulano, il sardo, il cimbro). In fondo al volume vi è una terza ed ultima sezione intitolata L'italiano nel mondo, che contiene fra l'altro contributi sull'italiano quale lingua soggetta a fenomeni linguistici panromanzi, paneuropei e internazionali.
