Paper made of cellulose has the advantages of substantial resource, good biocompatibility, large operation scale, and low production cost, however, it is usually hindered to replace plastic due to its inferior stability to water and poor mechanical strength. Herein, commercial filter paper (FP) was reacted with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) to fabricate modified paper with tunable hydrophobicity and enhanced wet tensile strength. Due to the formation of urethane linkages in the reaction, both hydrophobicity and wet mechanical properties can be tuned and improved by varying the MDI cross-linking agent, exhibiting highest water contact angle of 137.0° and wet tensile strength of 4.8 MPa. In addition, the modified MDI-FPs exhibited excellent antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli compared with the original FP. Overall, this study provides a more simple approach to modify cellulose paper to produce versatile cellulose-based materials that can potentially replace the non-biodegradable plastics.

In this paper, one hundred percent of condensed sulfate paper pulp waste liquid was used as the raw material of adhesive, and the activation of its lignin as well as the improving effects of phenol formaldehyde resin and polyfunctional aqueous polymer isocyanate (PAPI) were studied. The results showed that adding formaldehyde to the waste liquid could increase the reactivity of contained lignin, and adding 30% phenol formaldehyde resin or 20% PAPI could make the waste liquid in place of pure phenol formaldehyde resin for producing class I plywood. Furthermore, the cost could be reduced by 55.5% and 49.0%, respectively, in comparing with pure phenol formaldehyde resin. This approach fully used the organic resources in paper pulp waste liquid, reduced environment pollution at the same time, and had unexceptionable economic, social and ecological benefits. The feasibility of preparing adhesives from paper pulp waste liquid was also analyzed by infrared spectrum.

This paper presents the results on a study to use paper mill sludge for particleboard production. Single-layer board and three-layer board, with paper sludge on the surface, were fabricated. Four levels of mixing ratios of paper sludge to wood particles (0:100, 15:85, 30:70, and 45:55) were used. The boards were produced with 3% and 4% methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), and 10% and 12% urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives. The bending and shear strengths, water absorption, and thickness swelling of the boards were investigated. The results indicated that the mechanical properties of the boards were negatively affected by the paper sludge amount. Overall, UF-bonded particleboards gave superior mechanical performance, water resistance, and thickness swell than MDI-bonded particleboards. The strengths of the UF-bonded board decreased much more than those of MDI-bonded board as paper sludge content increased. The three-layer boards made from 15% paper sludge with 12% UF satisfied fully the minimum requirements set by EN, ASTM D 1037-99, and ANSI A208.1 standards for general uses.

RAST was performed using both nitrocellulose (NC) and paper discs to compare these solid supports for ability to detect IgE antibodies in sera from two patients with hypersensitivity to the industrial chemical, diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate (MDI). NC disc had distinct advantages in ease of coupling the hapten-conjugate antigen to discs, and in use of lesser amounts of antigen. With regard to sensitivity, NC discs were better able to distinguish the positive sera from 34 control sera including those with elevated levels of total IgE. In both RAST systems, inhibition studies indicated high specificity of antibodies for MDI, with no reactivity detected toward the serum albumin portion of the MDI-HSA conjugate antigen. However, only in the NC RAST did antibodies from both patients react with p-tolyl isocyanate inhibitor. Based on the above results, NC discs displayed several advantages in RAST and are recommended for routine serological assay of isocyanate-specific antibodies.
