Sharks are one of the most threatened groups of marine animals because of high exploitation rates coupled with low resilience to fishing pressure. We provide information on the current status of the young sharks caught in fishing nets in Iskenderun and Mersin Bays in the eastern Mediterranean, based on fishery-dependent surveys conducted between 2010 and 2021. Sharks were found in bycatches in trawling nets, trammel nets, bottom longlines and fishing lines. Incidental captures of young-of-the-year or juvenile specimens (n=269) included 15 species and the data indicate that İskenderun and Mersin Bays may serve as a nursery ground for the new-born and young individuals especially for the Blackmouth Catshark (Galeus melastomus), the Lesser Spotted Dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), and the Velvet Belly (Etmopterus spinax). If necessary measures are taken, bycatch can be reduced to a certain limit, or even eliminated for shark species in the Mediterranean Sea.

WOS: 000370437500003, The blotchfin dragonet Callionymus filamentosus Valenciennes, 1837 is a Red Sea immigrant that was first recorded from the Turkish coast in 1994. To date, there has been little or no information on the biological parameters of C. filamentosus in the Mediterranean Sea. The present study aims to first determine the age and growth parameters of blotchfin dragonet C. filamentosus established in the Iskenderun Bay, northeastern Mediterranean. A total of 341 C. filamentosus were caught by commercial vessels from Iskenderun Bay (northeastern Mediterraenan, Turkey) between October 2012 and September 2013. The maximum age was found to be 5+ years for both sexes combined, the 1+ age group comprised of 56.0% of samples. The total length distribution of C. filamentosus ranged from 7.2-17.5 cm, and the weight distribution from 3.24-41.89 g. Growth equations for females were calculated as W=0.0131xL(2.820) (R-2 = 0.985) for males as W = 0.0155xL(2.757) (R-2 = 0.989) and for all individuals as W=0.0142xL(2.792) (R-2 = 0.987). Von Bertalonffy growth parameters were L-infinity = 21.22 cm, K= 0.235 year(-1), t(0) = -2.101 years for females, L-infinity = 22.24 cm, K = 0.215 year(-1), t(0) = -2.182 years for males, and as L-infinity = 21.93 cm, K = 0.213 year(-1), t(0) = -2.150 years for combined sexes. Overall total mortality was estimated as 0.62 year(-1), natural mortality was 0.41 year(-1) and fishing mortality was 0.21 year(-1).

Aylık gonadosomatik indeks (GSI) değerleri, Dussumieria elopsoides'in Nisan-Mayıs-Haziran-Temmuz-Ağustos-Eylül ayları arasında ürediğini göstermiştir. The aim of this study is determine some biological characteristics of Dussumieria elopsoides Bleeker, 1849 in Iskenderun Bay. A total of 815 individuals were examined by sampling monthly October 2013 – September 2014 in the years. The length, weight, age, weight-age, length-weight, relationships condition factor and gonadosomatic index values of Dussumieria elopsoides were determined. The examined sample includes 379 (46.50%) female and 436 (53.50%) male specimens. The total length range for females and males was 11.1-20.2cm and 10.0-17.5cm, respectively; and the weight range for females and males was 7.08-46.4 g and 6.72-44.7 g respectively. The length-weight relationships computed for female and male specimens was respectively as; W=0.00144xL3.582 and W=0.00155xL3.555. The minimum and maximum ages determined based on otholit readings for females and males ranged from 0 to 4. The growth of Dussumieria elopsoides was determined as positive allometric. The computed von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estiamted as L∞=21.24cm, K=0.196 year-1, t0=-4.180 year for females, L∞=24.29 cm, K=0.160 year-1, t0=-4.648 year for males and L∞=22.56 cm, K=0.168 year-1, t0=-4.654 for all population. The mean condition factor of females, males and all population were found as 0.71±0.079, 0.69±0.092 and 0.70±0.087 respectively. Length at first maturity for female and male were estimated 15.93 cm and 14.18 cm respectively. The monthly GSI values are showed spawns of Dussumieria elopsoides between April-May-June-July-August and September. 63
