Industrial processes and municipal wastes largely contribute to the fluctuations in iron (Fe) content in soils. Fe, when present in unfavorable amount, causes harmful effects on human, flora, and fauna. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the composition of Fe in surface soils from paper mill and municipal landfill sites and assess their potential ecological and human health risks. Geochemical fractionation was conducted to explore the chemical bonding of Fe across different fractions, i.e., water-soluble (F1) to residual (F6). Different contamination factors and pollution indices were evaluated to comprehend Fe contamination extent across the study area. Results indicated the preference for less mobile forms in the paper mill and landfill, with 26.66% and 43.46% of Fe associated with the Fe-Mn oxide bound fraction (F4), and 57.22% and 24.78% in the residual fraction (F6). Maximum mobility factor (MF) of 30.65% was observed in the paper mill, and 80.37% in the landfill. The enrichment factor (EF) varied within the range of 20 < EF < 40, signifying a high level of enrichment in the soil. The individual contamination factor (ICF) ranged from 0 to >6, highlighting low to high contamination. Adults were found to be more vulnerable towards Fe associated health risks compared to children. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) index showed the highest risk potential pathways as dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation. Iron is an important micronutrient involved in several mechanisms in the human body and can be an important biomarker. In this work, a simple and disposable microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) was developed for the quantification of iron in urine samples. The detection was based on the colorimetric reaction between iron(II) and bathophenanthroline and the reduction of iron(III) to iron(II) with hydroxylamine. The developed µPAD enabled iron determination in the range 0.07-1.2 mg/L, with a limit of detection of 20 µg/L and a limit of quantification of 65 µg/L, thus suitable for the expected values in human urine. Additionally, targeting urine samples, the potential interference of the samples color was overcome by incorporating a sample blank assessment for absorbance subtraction. Stability studies revealed that the device was stable for 15 days prior to usage and that the formed colored product was stable for scanning up to 3 h. In this work, a new chemiluminescence (CL) system of Co-Fe prussian blue analogs nanocubes (Co-Fe PBA NCs) that can catalyze luminol to produce strong CL in the absence of H 2 O 2 was established. Co-Fe PBA NCs have the property of oxidase-like activity, and it can catalyze the generation of active oxygen radicals in a dissolved oxygen system. Since caffeic acid (CA) can remove reactive oxygen species in the system, a sensitive detection method for CA on a paper-based chip was developed. Under the optimal conditions, this method showed a good linear response to CA in the range of 10 - 800 ng mL -1 with a limit of 3 ng mL -1 . The proposed method had been used for the determination of CA in tea samples. The results may open a new avenue for the catalytic property on luminol CL system without extra oxidants.

We report a smartphone-paper-based sensor impregnated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs/CTAB) for determination of Fe 3+ in water and blood plasma samples. The methodology for determination of Fe 3+ is based on the change in signal intensity of AgNPs/CTAB fabricated on a paper substrate after the deposition of analyte, using a smartphone followed by processing with ImageJ software. The mechanism of sensing for detection and determination of Fe 3+ is based on the discoloration of AgNPs which impregnated the paper substrate. The discoloration is attributed to the electron transfer reaction taking place on the surface of NPs in the presence of CTAB. Fe 3+ was determined when the paper was impregnated with 1 mM AgNPs for 5 min of reaction time and the substrate was kept under acidic conditions. The linear range for determination of total iron in terms of Fe 3+ was 50-900 μg L -1 with a limit of determination (LOD) of 20 μg L -1 and coefficient of variation (CV) of 3.2%. The good relative recovery of 91.3-95.0% and interference studies showed the selectivity of the method for determination of total iron in water and blood plasma samples. Smartphone-paper-based sensors have advantages of simplicity, rapidity, user-friendliness, low cost, and miniaturization of the method for on-site determination of total iron compared to methods that require sophisticated analytical instruments. The current work describes the development of a "nanopaper-based analytical device (NAD)", through the embedding of curcumin in transparent bacterial cellulose (BC) nanopaper, as a colorimetric assay kit for monitoring of iron and deferoxamine (DFO) as iron-chelating drug in biological fluids such as serum blood, urine and saliva. The iron sensing strategy using the developed assay kit is based on the decrease of the absorbance/color intensity of curcumin-embedded in BC nanopaper (CEBC) in the presence of Fe(III), due to the formation of Fe(III)-curcumin complex. On the other hand, releasing of Fe(III) from Fe(III)-CEBC upon addition of DFO as an iron-chelating drug, due to the high affinity of this drug to Fe(III) in competition with curcumin, which leads to recovery of the decreased absorption/color intensity of Fe(III)-CEBC, is utilized for selective colorimetric monitoring of this drug. The absorption/color changes of the fabricated assay kit as output signal can be monitored by smartphone camera or by using a spectrophotometer. The results of our developed sensor agreed well with the results from a clinical reference method for determination of Fe(III) concentration in human serum blood samples, which revealed the clinical applicability of our developed assay kit. Taken together, regarding the advantageous features of the developed sensor as an easy-to-use, non-toxic, disposable, cost-effective and portable assay kit, along with those of smartphone-based sensing, it is anticipated that this sensing bioplatform, which we name lab-on-nanopaper, will find utility for sensitive, selective and easy diagnosis of iron-related diseases (iron deficiency and iron overload) and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of iron-chelating drugs in clinical analysis as well., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. This paper studies Fe/Al composite hydrogel electrode electrocoagulation (EC) and adsorption of alizarin red S (ARS). ARS removal efficiency and degradation mechanism when applying Fe/Al composite hydrogel electrode were investigated. The optimum experimental factors and degradation of ARS were discussed. ARS degradation was optimal operation at initial pH 3 with O 2 .The experimental results showed that the COD removal efficiency was better, reaching to about 90 % when applying the novel electrode system. The discoloration rate also reached the best effect of 99 % in the superior technical conditions. The optimum electrolysis time is about 30 min. Results revealed that the efficiency in the EC process with Fe/Al composite hydrogel electrodes were much better than that in conventional electrode system. In addition, Fe/Al composite hydrogel electrodes are environment-friendly material, which reuse waste and reduce cost. Hydrogel has certain iron exchange capacity to eliminate the residual metal irons. It is found that the application of ultrasonic helps to accelerate the electrocoagulation of ARS. This study not only realizes the ultrasonic, flotation, coagulation, and adsorption of the combination but also gains economy and environment. Consequently, the unique performance of Fe/Al composite hydrogel electrodes opens promising perspectives for fast, high, and economical treatment of wastewater containing dyes or/and organic contaminants.

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) were used to detect the iron ion content in the water of a natural hot spring in order to assess the applicability of this process to the environmental analysis of natural water. The μPADs were fabricated using a wax printer after the addition of hydroxylamine into the detection reservoirs to reduce Fe(3+) to Fe(2+), 1,10-phenanthroline for the forming of a complex, and poly(acrylic acid) for ion-pair formation with an acetate buffer (pH 4.7). The calibration curve of Fe(3+) showed a linearity that ranged from 100 to 1000 ppm in the semi-log plot whereas the color intensity was proportional to the concentration of Fe(3+) and ranged from 40 to 350 ppm. The calibration curve represented the daily fluctuation in successive experiments during four days, which indicated that a calibration curve must be constructed for each day. When freshly prepared μPADs were compared with stored ones, no significant difference was found. The μPADs were applied to the determination of Fe(3+) in a sample of water from a natural hot spring. Both the accuracy and the precision of the μPAD method were evaluated by comparisons with the results obtained via conventional spectrophotometry. The results of the μPADs were in good agreement with, but less precise than, those obtained via conventional spectrophotometry. Consequently, the μPADs offer advantages that include rapid and miniaturized operation, although the precision was poorer than that of conventional spectrophotometry.

This paper reports the continuous reductive amination of different molecules, including biomass-related compounds, over carbon-supported FeNi nanoparticles obtained on the basis of inexpensive and abundant metal precursors and cellulose. In this study, the combination of Fe(3+)/HCl and ultrasonic treatment was applied to selectively hydrolyze cellulose for the preparation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). It was found that the crystallinity and specific surface area of hydrocellulose samples were higher (78.92% and 2.23581 m(2)g(-1), respectively), compared with the method that only used Fe(3+)/HCl catalyst without ultrasonic treatment. Meanwhile, the hydrolysate can be extracted and reused for cellulose hydrolysis for three runs, which was effective in saving the dosage of chemicals and reducing the pollution of the environment without affecting the properties of hydrocellulose. Moreover, the increased concentration of total reducing sugar (TRS) after three runs may be used as a valuable source in biofuels production. The technology of cellulose hydrolysis, by retaining the crystalline region for MCC products while promoting hydrolysis of amorphous region for further utilization is of great novelty, which may prove valuable in converting biomass into chemicals and biofuels, environmentally and economically., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Exposure to metal-containing aerosols has been linked with adverse health outcomes for almost every organ in the human body. Commercially available techniques for quantifying particulate metals are time-intensive, laborious, and expensive; often sample analysis exceeds $100. We report a simple technique, based upon a distance-based detection motif, for quantifying metal concentrations of Ni, Cu, and Fe in airborne particulate matter using microfluidic paper-based analytical devices. Paper substrates are used to create sensors that are self-contained, self-timing, and require only a drop of sample for operation. Unlike other colorimetric approaches in paper microfluidics that rely on optical instrumentation for analysis, with distance-based detection, analyte is quantified visually based on the distance of a colorimetric reaction, similar to reading temperature on a thermometer. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, Ni, Cu, and Fe were measured individually in single-channel devices; detection limits as low as 0.1, 0.1, and 0.05 μg were reported for Ni, Cu, and Fe. Multiplexed analysis of all three metals was achieved with detection limits of 1, 5, and 1 μg for Ni, Cu, and Fe. We also extended the dynamic range for multi-analyte detection by printing concentration gradients of colorimetric reagents using an off-the-shelf inkjet printer. Analyte selectivity was demonstrated for common interferences. To demonstrate utility of the method, Ni, Cu, and Fe were measured from samples of certified welding fume; levels measured with paper sensors matched known values determined gravimetrically.

The synergistic mechanism of 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenol (TCP) degradation using a combination of Fe0 and anaerobic dechlorinating bacteria with batch processing was investigated. Experimental results showed that under the conditions of pH 7.0, Fe0 5 g x L(-1) and 2,4,6-TCP 30 mg x L(-1), the growth and interface enrichment of enriched-bacteria could be promoted by Fe0, the cell mass (expressed by D600) of Fe0/enriched-bacteria was about 1.7 times as high as that of the individual predominant groups of dechlorinating bacteria. After 96 h reaction, large amount of bacteria attached to the iron surface, with short rod or coccus-like morphology. The pH value of the system was maintained at 7.8, which could be beneficial to the reductive dechlorination reaction and the growth of the enriched-bacteria. The major pathway of 2,4,6-TCP degradation in the Fe0/enriched-bacteria system was 2,4,6-TCP to 2,4-DCP and then to 4-CP.

Laboratory studies were conducted to find out the efficacy of uniquely prepared zero valent iron impregnated silica in transforming xenobiotic chlorophenols namely 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. Continuous mode column experiments were performed to investigate the transformation of chlorophenols by varying pH, column height, flow rate and initial chlorophenol concentration. Reusability study of the zero valent iron impregnated silica was studied as well as the morphological changes and the chemical composition of the catalyst medium were also investigated. Dechlorination kinetic studies were conducted and the order of dechlorination of chlorophenols was found to be 2,4,6-trichlorophenol > 2,4-dichlorophenol > 4-chlorophenol. The optimum pH, column height and flow rate were found to be 7, 20 cm and 0.75 L/hr respectively for all chlorophenols in the reaction duration of 4 hr. Intermediates formed during dechlorination study were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis. This method was applied to real pulp and paper wastewater and was found satisfactory.

This work is first intended to optimize the experimental conditions for the maximum degradation of guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol) by Fenton's reagent, and second, to improve the process efficiency through the use of solar radiation. Guaiacol is considered as a model compound of pulp and paper mill effluent. The experiments were carried out in a laboratory-scale reactor subjected or not to solar radiation. Hydrogen peroxide solution was continuously introduced into the reactor at a constant flow rate. The kinetics of organic matter decay was evaluated by means of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the absorbance measurements. The experimental results showed that the Fenton and solar photo-Fenton systems lead successfully to 90% elimination of COD and absorbance at 604 nm from a guaiacol solution under particular experimental conditions. The COD removal always obeyed a pseudo-first-order kinetics. The effect of pH, temperature, H(2)O(2) dosing rate, initial concentration of Fe(2+), and initial COD was investigated using the Fenton process. The solar photo-Fenton system needed less time and consequently less quantity of H(2)O(2). Under the optimum experimental conditions, the solar photo-Fenton process needs a dose of H(2)O(2) 40% lower than that used in the Fenton process to remove 90% of COD.

The efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), enzymatic treatment and combined enzymatic/AOP sequences for the colour remediation of soda and chemimechanical pulp and paper mill effluent was investigated. The results indicated that under all circumstances, the AOP using ultraviolet irradiation (photo-Fenton) was more efficient in the degradation of effluent components in comparison with the dark reaction. It was found that both versatile peroxidase (VP) from Bjerkandera adusta and laccase from Trametes versicolor, as pure enzymes, decolorize the deep brown effluent to a clear light-yellow solution. In addition, it was found that in the laccase treatment, the decolorization rates of both effluents were enhanced in the presence of 2, 2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonate), while in the case of VP, Mn(+2) decreased the efficiency of the decolorization treatment. The concomitant use of enzymes and AOPs imposes a considerable effect on the colour remediation of effluent samples.

Iron gall inks have been known since Roman times, were widely used in the Medieval Age, and became the most used ink in the Renaissance period. They were still officially used by the German Government as recently as 1973. The two main constituents of the ink are tannic acid and ferrous sulfate (vitriol). The vitriol normally used was not very pure and likely contained a mixture of iron sulfate with traces of other metals, in particular, copper. Certain transition-metal ions contained in iron gall inks and their acidity are known to deteriorate paper. Therefore, stabilization treatments consist of deacidification and the addition of antioxidants. To this end, the use of tetraalkylammonium bromides was recently proposed. Here, it is shown that 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bromide both in aqueous and in alcoholic solution can prevent the oxidative deterioration of cellulose. Furthermore, it does not lead to the yellowing of paper nor does it significantly affect the colour of the ink.

Metal salts, ferrous sulphate and aluminium chloride, were added to laboratory-scale activated sludge plant treating paper mill effluents to investigate the effect on settlement characteristics. Before treatment the sludge was filamentous, had stirred sludge volume index (SSVI) values in excess of 300 and was moderately hydrophobic. The use of FeSO4.7H2O took three weeks to reduce the SSVI to 90. Microscopic examination showed that Fe had converted the filamentous flocs into a compact structure. When the iron dosing was stopped, the sludge returned to its bulking state within four weeks. In a subsequent trial, the addition of AlCl3 initially resulted in an improvement of the settlement index but then caused deterioration of the sludge properties. It is possible that aluminium was overdosed and caused charge reversal, increasing the SSVI.

Colour and COD removal studies of pulp and paper mill effluent were carried out by Fenton's oxidation. Fenton's oxidation process was employed in four distinct stages interrelated to each other. In the first stage, FeSO4 concentration, pH and temperature were kept constant to determine H2O2 dose for maximum color and COD removal. In the second stage, dose of H2O2 obtained from first stage and same oxidation conditions were applied to determine the optimum FeSO4 concentration. Optimum pH, temperature and contact time were investigated in third and fourth stages considering the results of optimum doses of first and second stage. Maximum color up to 98% and COD removal up to 62% were obtained for Fenton reagents of 600 mg/L of H2O2 and 100 mg/L of Fe2+ dose at pH 3.0 for 300 min of contact period between reagents and effluent.

The electrochemical oxidation of phenol in synthetic wastewater and paper mill wastewater catalyzed by metal ion supported on cation exchange resin in suspended bed electrolytic reactor with graphite electrode has been investigated. The catalyst was characterized by SEM and XPS spectra and the effects of pH, the different metal ion and NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical oxidation phenol process were also studied. It was found that the catalyst containing Fe(3+) had the highest electrochemical catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxidation of phenol. When the initial concentration of phenol was 200 ppm, up to 90% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was obtained in 10 min. When the catalyst containing Fe(3+) was used to the paper mill wastewater, it still showed high efficiency. The COD removal could get to 75% in 60 min.

Most arsenic bearing solid residuals (ABSR) from water treatment will be disposed in nonhazardous landfills. The lack of an appropriate leaching test to predict arsenic mobilization from ABSR creates a need to evaluate the magnitude and mechanisms of arsenic release under landfill conditions. This work studies the leaching of arsenic and iron from a common ABSR, granular ferric hydroxide, in a laboratory-scale column that simulates the biological and physicochemical conditions of a mature, mixed solid waste landfill. The column operated for approximately 900 days and the mode of transport as well as chemical speciation of iron and arsenic changed with column age. Both iron and arsenic were readily mobilized under the anaerobic, reducing conditions. During the early stages of operation, most arsenic and iron leaching (80% and 65%, respectively) was associated with suspended particulate matter, and iron was lost proportionately faster than arsenic. In later stages, while the rate of iron leaching declined, the arsenic leaching rate increased greater than 7-fold. The final phase was characterized by dissolved species leaching. Future work on the development of standard batch leaching tests should take into account the dominant mobilization mechanisms identified in this work: solid associated transport, reductive sorbent dissolution, and microbially mediated arsenic reduction.

The effect of Fenton's reagent (FR) on surface and dispersion properties of black liquor (BL) was investigated. These properties were compared to those of indulin C (IC), a commercial lignin, and egg lecithin (Le). FR was applied at two different bulk concentrations of H2O2 (160 and 320 mM). At pH 8, a minimum in surface tension for the Fenton treated BL was observed. The dispersant ability of BL, IC and Le in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions was studied by measuring emulsion stability and drop size. It was found that the surface activity and emulsifying capability of BL were higher than those of IC. The emulsifying capability of Le was improved by the FR treatment at low H2O2 concentration.

Background: Efforts to reduce the high global prevalence of nutritional anemia require the use of both reliable laboratory assays to distinguish iron deficiency from other causes of anemia and cost-effective methods for collection of blood specimens under field conditions. The suitability of using small plasma samples spotted and dried on filter paper for measurements of plasma ferritin and transferrin receptor was evaluated in the present study., Methods: Blood specimens obtained from 73 male and 83 female subjects (19-40 years) representing a wide range of iron status were used to perform parallel measurements of plasma ferritin and transferrin receptor on whole plasma and spotted plasma samples., Results: Ratio plots, evaluating the acceptability and precision of the spot method in ferritin and transferrin receptor assays, showed the expected proportion of data points within the 95% prediction interval. In the composite group of 156 subjects, both the whole plasma and plasma spot methods gave a geometric mean transferrin receptor/ferritin ratio of 18. The regression equation for the ratio was logy = 1.045 logx - 0.05126; r = 0.986; P <0.0001. The ratio of transferrin receptor/ferritin determined from plasma spots correctly identified all 12 subjects with iron deficiency anemia compared with 11 of the 12 for whole plasma measurements., Conclusions: Measurements of ferritin and transferrin receptor on plasma spotted and dried on filter paper are comparable to whole plasma values for the identification of iron deficiency anemia. The use of dried plasma spots will facilitate the collection, storage, and transport of samples in epidemiological studies of anemia prevalence.

The aim of this study was to investigate a possible relationship between exposure to sulfides and disturbances of the synthesis of heme and the erythrocytes. Eighteen workers exposed to sulfides at a pulp and paper plant were examined and compared with individually matched referents from a thermomechanical pulp plant without such exposure. The exposure levels of methylmercaptan, dimethylsulfide, and dimethyldisulfide were low. However, five subjects were exposed to high levels of short duration, and their data were analyzed separately. The activity of the enzymes delta-aminolevulinic acid synthase and heme synthase in reticulocytes, characteristics of the erythrocytes, and the iron status were analyzed. A minor decrease, not statistically significant, was observed for the enzymes among the five highly exposed subjects. However, the concentrations of iron and transferrin were elevated and the concentration of ferritin was low in comparison to the corresponding levels of the referents. This combination will not occur spontaneously. A previous study indicated that sulfides may inhibit heme synthesis, and the present study suggests that they may also disturb iron metabolism.

Understanding water absorbency in paper is challenging as fibre swelling and out-of-plane deformation occur simultaneously during liquid imbibition. Liquid absorption is commonly accessed by gravimetric tests, which provides limited information on the local spatial and temporal distribution of fluid in the substrate. In this work, we developed iron tracers to map liquid imbibition in paper by in situ precipitation of iron oxide nanoparticles during passage of the wetting front. The iron oxide tracers were found to be robustly attached to the cellulosic fibres. After liquid absorption tests, absorbency was investigated by mapping the distribution of iron in 3D using X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) and in 2D using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. We demonstrate a difference in tracer distribution between the wetting front and the fully saturated region supporting that imbibition proceeds in two phases, i.e. liquid percolation through the cell wall initially prior to filling of the external pore spaces. Critically, we demonstrate that these iron tracers enhance image contrast and allow for new imaging modalities in μCT for fibre networks. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paper documents with severe iron gall ink corrosion are difficult to handle. While a defined treatment for the chemical stabilisation exists already, methods to improve the mechanical stabilisation have yet to be developed. The degradation of the selected objects was so advanced that the documents needed special attention concerning handling and mechanical re-enforcement. After a calciumphytate-calciumhydrogen treatment, documents were lined with light weight Japanese paper and gelatine. A workflow for treating severely degraded iron gall ink documents was developed. Since the removal of objects from the silk screen frames after the wet treatment proved to be too difficult, a PE-board was introduced as an alternative washing support. Most synthetic fleeces such as Hollytex or Paraprint adhere to its granulated surface by mechanical means. This makes PE-board a practical support during any wet treatment of paper-based objects. Cellulose in historic paper documents is often damaged by the writing media used, especially iron gall ink or copper pigments. Degradation induced by iron gall ink is suggested to be a synergistic process comprising both hydrolytic and oxidative reactions. These processes were studied on very low sample amounts according to the CCOA and FDAM method, i.e. by fluorescence labeling of carbonyl and carboxyl groups in combination with GPC-MALLS, respectively. This study focused on preventive means to stop the deterioration induced by iron gall ink of cellulose and to prevent further damage, keeping in mind that a suitable conservation treatment has to hinder both, hydrolytic and oxidative processes, at the same time. A combination of the complexing agent calcium phytate and calcium hydrogencarbonate in aqueous solution was proved to give optimum results. To gain insight into long term stability, an aging step was performed after treatment and different ink modifications were tested. Recording the molecular weight distributions and the carbonyl group content over time GPC analysis verified for the first time the preventive effect of this treatment. This effect was not only seen for the ink-covered areas, but extended also to areas remote from the ink lines. Ink containing copper ions responded equally positively to the calcium phytate/hydrogencarbonate treatment as the iron gall ink papers did. Gelatine, sometimes used in a similar way due to an alleged cellulose-stabilizing effect did not have a beneficial influence on cellulose integrity when metal ions were present. Abstract: In this paper, the low cycle fatigue properties of JLF-1 steel were studied from room temperature (RT) to 873K in a vacuum condition using engineering size round bar specimens. The fatigue life at elevated temperature was almost the same as that at RT when the life was plotted against the total strain range. But when the life was plotted against the plastic strain range, the temperature effect on fatigue life exceeded the 95% confidence band. Based on TEM analysis, this tendency was caused by the interaction of dislocation changing with temperature, which will affect the possibility of crack initiation. Cyclic softening was observed in the fatigue test at elevated temperature. The cyclic stress–strain curve was obtained from the fatigue stress–strain hysteresis curves at around half life. The cyclic yield point was lower than the static one, especially at 873K. Thus, cyclic softening is a design issue at elevated temperature, which reduces the design margin significantly. The application of low-level direct electric current (0.15 mA cm−2) as an electrokinetic technique to treat copper-contaminated mesophilic anaerobic granular sludge was investigated. The sludge was obtained from a full scale UASB reactor treating paper-mill wastewater and was artificially contaminated by Cu(NO3)2 or CuEDTA2− with initial copper concentrations of 1000 mg . kg−1 wet sludge. The effect of different electrokinetic cell layouts, pH and EDTA concentrations on the migration of copper and iron during electrokinetic treatment were evaluated. Both, the pH of the sludge cake or the copper complexation with EDTA significantly affected the migration direction of copper. In an ‘open’ cell (sludge cake in direct contact with air), the highest copper mobility was observed at pH 2.5 in both Cu(NO3)2 or CuEDTA2− amended sludge. The highest copper accumulation was at the cathode (22 ± 2)% with CuEDTA2− as contaminant. In a ‘closed’ cell (sludge cake not in contact with air), the highest accumulation was obtained for CuEDTA2− at the anode and amounted to 4(± 0.5)% and 2(± 0.05)%, respectively, at a final pH of 4.2 and 7.7 in the sludge cake. The aim of this work was to study the efficiency of extraction of iron from model paper samples by use of different ligands (deferoxamine mesylate, the potassium–magnesium salt of phytic acid and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) at varied concentrations (0.01, 0.005, and 0.001 mol L-1) and pH (7, 8, 9). Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) was used to monitor the total amount of iron in solutions of the respective ligands. Two types of model were used to investigate the behaviour of various iron species present in ancient iron-gall ink. Requirements for the optimal procedure, which could possibly be used in the conservation of ancient manuscripts, included high effectiveness of iron extraction from samples which modelled free iron ions (samples "Fe"), while iron deposited in the form of ink (samples "A") should remain without any visible change of the ink's intensity. The best results were achieved with the solution of 0.005 mol L-1 diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (pH=9), which allowed extraction of 97±1% of iron from "Fe" model samples and only 64±1% from "A" samples.
