In this study, LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) nanoparticles were prepared as a 5 V cathode material via a rheological phase method and annealed at different temperatures: 680 °C, 750 °C, and 820 °C. The sample annealed at 750 °C shows the best performance. A room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) containing 1 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiNTf2) in N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (C4mpyrNTf2) was used as novel electrolyte in conjunction with the LNMO cathodes and their electrochemical properties have been investigated. The results show that the LNMO using RTIL as electrolyte has better coulombic efficiency and comparable discharge capacities to those of the cells assembled with standard liquid electrolyte (1 M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate/diethyl carbonate). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the RTIL is much more stable as the electrolyte for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 than the conventional electrolyte.

Ionic liquid surface treatments are proposed as a method of controlling corrosion processes on magnesium alloys. An important magnesium alloy, ZE41 (nominally 4% Zn and 1% rare earth), was treated with the ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium diphenylphosphate (P66614DPP). Impedance spectra were acquired at intervals during the treatment, indicating the development of a film and allowing a measure of the film formation process to be obtained over time. Mechanically polished and electro-polished surfaces were prepared; these surfaces, treated and untreated, were subsequently exposed to 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solutions. The corrosion behavior of the prepared surfaces were assessed using impedance spectroscopy and optical microscopy. The results indicated a significant role for the method of surface preparation used and, in both cases, the ionic liquid treatment produced a more corrosion-resistant surface.

V2O5 nanomaterials including nanoribbons, nanowires, and microflakes have been synthesized by an ultrasonic assisted hydrothermal method and combined with a post-annealing process. The as-annealed V2O5 nanomaterials are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). A room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) has been used as an electrolyte ([C3mpyr][NTf2] containing 1 M LiNTf2) in rechargeable lithium metal batteries by combining V2O5 nanomaterials as cathode materials. The boundary films generated oil a series of inorganic compounds, typical of native films oil metal and ceramic surfaces, when exposed to various ionic liquids (ILs) based oil the trihexyl(teti-adecyl)phosphonium cation have been characterized using multinuclear solid-state NMR. The NMR results indicate that SiO2 and Mg(OH)(2) interact strongly with the anion and cation of each IL through a mechanism of adsorption of the anion and subsequent close proximity of the cation in a surface double layer as observed through H-1-Si-29 cross polarization experiments). In contrast, Al2O3, MgO, ZnO, and ZrO2 appear less active, strongly suggesting the necessity of hydroxylated surface groups ill order to enhance the generation of these interfacial films. Using solid-state NMR to characterize Such interfaces not only has the potential to elucidate mechanisms of wear resistance and corrosion protection via iLs, but is also likely to allow their rapid screening for such durability applications.

In this work lithium modified silica (Li-SiO2) nano-particles were synthesized and used as a single ion lithium conductor source in gel electrolytes. It was found that Li-SiO2 exhibited good compatibility with DMSO, DMA/EC (a mixture of N,N-dimethyl acetamide and ethylene carbonate) and the ionic liquid, N-methyl-N-propyl pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide ([C3mpyr][NTf2]). Several gel electrolytes based on Li-SiO2 were obtained. These gel electrolytes were investigated by DSC, solid state NMR, conductivity measurements and cyclic voltammetry. Conductivities as high as 10−3 S/cm at room temperature were observed in these nano-particle gel electrolytes. The results of electrochemical tests showed that some of these materials were promising for using as lithium conductive electrolytes in electrochemical devices, with high lithium cycling efficiency evident.

Montmorillonites are composed of aluminosilicate layers stacked one above the other, and the layer thickness is approximately 1 nm. In this work lithium modified montmorillonite (Li-MMT) was prepared and used as a lithium macro-anion salt in gel electrolytes. It was found that Li-MMT exhibited good compatibility with poly(ethylene glycol), DMSO and the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIdca), and a few of novel gel electrolytes based on Li-MMT were obtained. These gel electrolytes were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, solid state NMR, conductivity measurements and cyclic voltammetry. High conductivities up to 10− 4 to 10− 3 S/cm at room temperature were observed with these macro-anion gel electrolytes. These gel materials were promising to be used as lithium conductive electrolytes in electrochemical devices, such as lithium batteries.

Novel polymer electrolyte materials based on a polyelectrolyte-in-ionic-liquid principle are described. A combination of a lithium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPSLi) and N,N′-dimethylacrylamide (DMMA) are miscible with the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIDCA). EMIDCA has remarkably high conductivity (≥ 2 · 10−2 S · cm−1) at room temperature and acts as a good solvating medium for the polyelectrolyte. At compositions of AMPSLi less than or equal to 75 mol-% in the copolymer (P(AMPSLi-co-DMAA)), the polyelectrolytes in EMIDCA are homogeneous, flexible elastomeric gel materials at 10 − 15 wt.-% of total polyelectrolyte. Conductivities higher than 8 · 10−3 S · cm−1 at 30 °C have been achieved. The effects of the monomer composition, polyelectrolyte concentration, temperature and lithium concentration on the ionic conductivity have been studied using thermal and conductivity analysis, and pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance techniques.

Novel polymer-in-ionic liquid electrolytes (PILEs) have been developed for solid state electrochemical actuators based on polypyrrole. The active polymer electrodes are readily oxidized/reduced without degradation in the PILE. It was found that the actuator cycle life is significantly enhanced in the PILE as is the ‘shelf life’ of the device.

High conductivity in single ion conducting polymer electrolytes is still the ultimate aim for many electrochemical devices such as secondary lithium batteries. Achieving effective ion dissociation in these cases remains a challenge since the active ion tends to remain in close proximity to the backbone charge as a result of a low degree of ion dissociation. A unique aspect of this dissociation problem in polyelectrolytes is the repulsion between the backbone charges created by dissociation. In order to achieve high conductivity in a polymer electrolyte, polymer-in-ionic-liquid electrolytes have been explored. It is found in this study that poly-[vinylpyrrolidone-co-(vinyl acetate)] (P(VP-c-VA) in 1-ethyk-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl) amide (EtMeIm + Tf2N - ) and poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMAA) in trimethyl butyl ammonium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl) amide (N + 1114 Tf 2 N - ) produce ion-conducting liquids and gels. The P(VP-c-VA)/ EtMeIm + Tf 2 N - mixture has a conductivity around 10 -3 S . cm -1 at 22°C, for copolymer concentrations up to 30 wt.-%. Thermal analysis shows that the Tg of the PVP(VP-c-VA)/ EtMeIm + Tf 2 N - system is well described by the Fox equation as a function of polymer content. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/ EtMeIm + Tf 2 N - gel electrolytes were prepared by in-situ polymerisation of the monomer in the ionic liquid. In the presence of 0.5 - 2.0 wt.-% of a crosslinking agent, these PMMA-based electrolytes displayed elastromeric properties and high conductivity (ca. 10 -3 S. cm -1 ) at room temperature.

Novel lithium polyelectrolyte–ionic liquid systems, using poly(lithium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propanesulfonate) and its copolymer with N-vinyl formamide, have been developed in this work. The ionic liquid used in this work is from a novel family of methanesulfonate ionic liquids, specifically N-hexyl-N,N,N-tributyl ammonium methanesulfonate, which is chosen because of the similarity with the anionic functionality of the polymer. The ionic liquid thereby acts as a good solvating medium for the polyelectrolyte. It was found that the copolymer-based polyelectrolyte–ionic liquid system exhibits two to three times higher conductivity than that of the homopolymer system. The results of solid-state 7Li-NMR have shown that lithium cations in the copolymer system are mobile whereas in the homopolymer, only a fraction appears to be mobile even at 80 °C. This supports the hypothesis that separation of the charged groups on the polymer backbone via the co-monomer encourages the dissociation of lithium cations from the sulfonate groups bonded to the polymer chains, and hence, results in an increase in conductivity of the polyelectrolyte material.

The use of ionic liquids as additives to base oil for the lubrication of steel on aluminum was investigated. The miscibility and wear performance of various phosphonium, imidazolium, and pyrrolidinium ionic liquids in a range of polar and nonpolar base oils was determined. The structure and ion pairing of the ionic liquids was found to be important in determining their miscibility in the base oils. In wear tests, some of the miscible base oil/IL blends reduced the aluminum wear depth when compared to that found with the base oil alone. The nonpolar base oil/IL blends were able to withstand higher wear-test loads than the polar base oil/IL blends. At 10 N, as little as 0.01 mol/kg of IL, or 0.7-0.9 wt %, in the nonpolar base oils was enough to drastically reduce the wear depth on the aluminum. XPS analysis of the wear surfaces suggested that the adsorbing of the IL to the surface, where it can form low-shear layers and also react to form tribofilms, is important in reducing friction and wear. The largest reductions in wear at the highest load tested were found for a mineral oil/P6,6,6,14 (i)(C8)2PO2 blend.

The performance of a series of novel room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) based on the trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphoniumcation (P66614 +) and a number of novel anions have been studied in pin-on-disk tests using a 100Cr6 steel ball on AA2024 aluminium disks. The anions coupled to the (P66614 +) cation include diphenyl phosphate (DPP-), dibutyl phosphate (DBP-), bis (2,4,4-trimethyl pentyl) phosphinate (M3PPh-) and bis(2-ethyl hexyl) phosphate (BEH-). More traditional anions such as bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide (NTf2 -) and bromide (Br-) were also investigated. Experiments were conducted at various loads to assess the IL film forming abilities. The results suggest that the structure of the anion is important in forming a surface film that reduces the friction and wear of the aluminium disk. At 30N five of the six ILs tested showed a 30-90% reduction in wear, as determined from wear scar depth measurements, compared to fully formulated diesel oil. The IL lubricant with a diphenyl phosphate anion achieved the lowest wear coefficient, showing a better performance than a typical fluorine-containing IL anion, NTf2. To further investigate wear mechanisms and surface interactions the wear scars were analysed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

A novel self-polymerised ionic liquid (IL) gel was prepared at room temperature (RT), without light or heat or addition of initiator, using a new IL, choline formate (CF), and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA).

In parallel with this, a variety of electrochemical devices including solar cells, high energy density batteries, fuel cells, and supercapacitors have become of intense interest as part of various proposed solutions to improve sustainability of energy supply in our societies. Much of our work over the last ten years has been motivated by such applications. Here we summarize the role of ionic liquids in these devices and the insights that the research provides for the broader field of interest of these fascinating liquids.

Ionic liquids have been shown to be highly effective lubricants for a steel on aluminium system. This work shows that the chemistry of the anion and cation are critical in achieving maximum wear protection. The performance of the ILs containing a diphenylphosphate (DPP) anion all showed low wear, as did some of the tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (FAP) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (NTf(2)) anion containing ILs. However, in the case of the FAP and NTf(2) based systems, a cation dependence was observed, with relatively poor wear resistance obtained in the case of an imidazolium FAP and two pyrrolidinium NTf(2) salts, probably due to tribocorrosion caused by the fluorine reaction with the aluminium substrate. The systems exhibiting poor performance generally had a lower viscosity, which also impacts on their tribological properties. Those ILs that exhibited low wear were shown to have formed protective tribofilms on the aluminium alloy surface.

Novel protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on a tributyl phosphonium cation have been synthesised and characterised, revealing that the phosphonium based ILs show high thermal stability, high ionic conductivity and facile proton reduction compared to the corresponding ammonium based ILs.

The development of new liquid and solid state electrolytes is paramount for the advancement of electrochemical devices such as lithium batteries and solar cells. Ionic liquids have shown great promise in both these applications. Here we demonstrate the use of phosphonium cations with small alkyl chain substituents, in combination with a range of different anions, to produce a variety of new halide free ionic liquids that are fluid, conductive and with sufficient thermal stability for a range of electrochemical applications. Walden plot analysis of the new phosphonium ionic liquids shows that these can be classed as “good” ionic liquids, with low degrees of ion pairing and/or aggregation, and the lithium deposition and stripping from one of these ionic liquids has been demonstrated. Furthermore, for the first time phosphonium cations have been used to form a range of organic ionic plastic crystals. These materials can show significant ionic conductivity in the solid state and thus are of great interest as potential solid-state electrolyte materials.

Recently, the ionic liquid (IL) choline dihydrogen phosphate was demonstrated to improve the thermostability and shelf life of several model proteins, thus exhibiting potential as a stabilizing excipient or solvent for protein therapeutics. Before novel ILs can be used for biomedical applications, comprehensive data is required to establish biocompatibility, including cytotoxicity effects and solution behavior. In this study five phosphate-based anion moieties were analyzed: H2PO4− (DHP), dibutyl phosphate (DBP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (BEH), bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinate (TMP), and O,O′-diethyl dithiophosphate (DEP), all paired with the cation choline (C). Toxicity levels for these ILs, and a common sugar and salts, were established using a J774 murine macrophage cell line. The sugar trehalose, and the simple salts sodium chloride and choline chloride yielded EC50 values of >100, 63 and 34 mM, respectively. The EC50 values (mM) of CDHP (20), CDBP (9.1), and CDEP (8.2) were lower than, but within the range of simple salts NaCl (62.8) and choline Cl (33.7). The EC50 values of CTMP and CBEH were considerably lower, 0.25 and 0.30 mM, respectively. CDHP and CBEH displayed a hormetic response. Osmolality measurements indicated that CDHP, CDBP, and CDEP exhibit nearly complete dissociation in aqueous solution, with osmotic coefficients of 1.0, 0.9, and 0.8, whereas CTMP and CBEH have coefficients of 0.5 and 0.3, and are more molecular in character. A high correlation between the EC50 value and the anion mass fraction indicated that anion size and the presence of moderately long and/or branched alkyl chains may affect viability.

Phosphonium cation based ionic liquids (ILs) have become of interest due to their unique chemical and electrochemical stability as well as their promising tribological properties. At the same time, interest has also grown in the use of phosphate and phosphinate based ionic liquids for corrosion protection of reactive metals. In this work we describe the synthesis and characterization of six novel ionic liquids based on the tetraalkylphosponium cation coupled with organophosphate and organophosphinate anions and their sulfur analogues. The conductivity and viscosity of these ILs has been measured and discussed in terms of the nature of the interactions, effect of anion basicity and the extent of ionic character. The reaction of the IL with a ZE41 magnesium aerospace alloy surface is also demonstrated.

Five new salts based on 1-alkyl-2-methyl pyrrolinium ion are reported, two involving the iodide ion and three involving the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide ion. The iodide salts have melting points around 100 °C, while the amide salts have melting points around room temperature. Two of the amide salts can be easily quenched into the glassy state and exhibit glass transition temperatures around −70 °C. The 2-methyl pyrrolinium cation bears structural similarities to the aromatic imidazolium cations on one hand and the cyclic ammonium cation family based on the pyrrolidinium cation on the other. The properties of the salts reported here are compared within these two related families of salts.
