Research Summary: Government involvement plays a significant role in fostering entrepreneurship. We examine how government involvement in venture capital (VC) investments shapes the decoupling between risk‐taking and investment returns. We distinguish government involvement through state ownership (GVC) and personal political connections (connected VC). We theorize that government involvement through GVC is associated with the downside risk–return paradox, that is, concurrent higher risk‐taking and lower‐than‐expected returns. In contrast, government involvement through connected VCs is linked to the upside risk–return paradox, that is, concurrent lower risk‐taking and higher‐than‐expected returns. Our theoretical predictions receive general support from analyses using longitudinal data from VC firms in China. Our study sheds light on the heterogeneity in the decoupling between risk and return and the underlying mechanisms through which governments influence entrepreneurship. Managerial Summary: Governments often seek to promote entrepreneurship; yet, their involvement in start‐ups tends to deviate from the conventional wisdom of a positive risk–return association. Government‐owned venture capital (VC) firms tend to take greater risks and invest in earlier‐stage start‐ups, but yield lower returns from their investments. Conversely, VC firms that have personal ties to government officials tend to take lower risks and prefer later‐stage start‐ups, yet achieve higher returns. These intriguing findings reveal the complexities of government participation in entrepreneurial activities and offer valuable insights for policy formulation. In addition, our findings highlight the importance for entrepreneurs to recognize diverse goals and resources in government involvement. This article examines how university students assess the coordination of the courses their programmes contain and how course coordination affects how content they are with their studies. The study is based on survey data from more than 5700 students, collected through Lund University's Student Barometer. The survey examines the students' views on course coordination based on content, workload, administrative procedures and whether or not teachers of different courses provide coherent information. The analysis shows that the coordination of courses has a significant impact on how students experience their studies. The better the course coordination, the more satisfaction students will get from their studies; and the correlation remains stable when several other factors of importance for student satisfaction are included in the analysis. The conclusion of the study is thus that course coordination clearly contributes to explaining variations in students' appreciation of their university studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Higher education is often framed as a means to social mobility and increased earnings. However, the value of university education in the United States is coming under scrutiny in regard to its costs. This article examines a university education's return on investment (ROI) from attending different types of universities in the United States. Unlike previous research, this study focuses on the variation of university institutional characteristics and their impact on ROI. This study analysed data from the US Department of Education College Scorecard, focusing on institutional factors, such as public/private, student body characteristics, research intensity, student diversity and selectivity. The results confirm that highly selective universities have a greater ROI, public universities overall have a better ROI, Research 1 universities have the higher ROI and private Research 1 institutions have the highest ROI. We show that international portfolios reflect the underlying heterogeneity in investors' beliefs. Using data on the foreign sovereign debt holdings of European banks matched with their forecasts on future bond yields, we find that expecting higher returns and having more accurate forecasts are associated with larger bond holdings. Crucially, the elasticity of portfolio holdings to expected returns is increasing in the precision of the forecast, implying that investors optimally exploit comparative advantages in information production. We rationalize the results in a model in which partial information specialization arises endogenously by introducing a degree of unlearnable uncertainty about asset payoffs. Stock portfolio problems are one of the most relevant real-world problems. In this study, we discuss the portfolio's risk amount, rate of risk-return, and expected return rate under a Fermatean fuzzy environment. A linear programming problem is used to formulate a Fermatean fuzzy portfolio. The Fermatean fuzzy portfolio is converted to a deterministic form using the score function. Lingo software is used to solve these deterministic portfolio problems. The main feature of this model is that investors can select a risk coefficient to enhance predicted returns and customize their strategies according to their circumstances. The return expectations of public pension funds are positively related to cross-sectional differences in past performance. This positive relation operates through the expected risk premium, rather than the expected risk-free rate or inflation rate. Pension funds act on their beliefs and adjust their portfolio composition accordingly. Persistent investment skills, risk taking, efforts to reduce costly rebalancing, and fiscal incentives from unfunded liabilities cannot fully explain the reliance of expectations on past performance. The results are consistent with extrapolative expectations, since the dependence on past returns is greater when executives have personally experienced longer performance histories with the fund. We investigate the empirical implications of the investment-based model of asset pricing for the Hansen-Jagannathan and Kozak-Nagel-Santosh discount factors in the linear span of equity returns. We find that the stochastic discount factors satisfying the Euler equation for equity returns cannot satisfy the Euler equation for investment returns because returns on corporate investment covary inversely with the sources of equity risk relative to returns on equity. As a result, the model fails to replicate the level of the risk premium. Our results suggest that joint restrictions on the optimality of investment and consumption pose stringent conditions for candidate production models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the effect of artificial intelligence (AI) investments on the performance of deposit money banks (DMBs) in Nigeria. Using data from 14 listed DMBs over 11 years (2012-2022), we analyze the impact of AI investments, proxied by computer software expenses and computer software book value, on the return on equity (ROE). Our findings indicate that software expenses have an insignificant effect on ROE, while software book value has a significant negative impact. However, collectively, AI investments significantly affect the performance of DMBs. The study underscores the importance of AI in enhancing the efficiency and profitability of banks in Nigeria. The article discusses the economic impact of integrating modern technologies in beekeeping, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and the Internet of Things (IoT). The balance between initial investment and Return on Investment (ROI), operational scalability, market competitiveness, and government policy influences is studied. The importance of Comprehensive Economic Analysis in optimizing benefits and overcoming the challenges beekeeping faces is emphasized. Introducing new technologies in the field leads to the scaling effect, which allows beekeepers to manage more processes and operations faster and with fewer costs and to enter wider markets, leading to increased revenue and high profitability. In addition, challenges related to the scale of activity and market conditions are noted, mainly faced by small apiaries in conditions of insufficient financial support (subsidies) from the state. In addition, the need to develop special training programs for the effective use of technologies is emphasized, which will make it easier for beekeepers to gain a competitive advantage, in particular, improving the quality of products, developing an appropriate marketing strategy and making effective decisions based on databases. The final part of the article presents the macroeconomic benefits that integrating modern technologies in beekeeping can bring - creating new jobs, increasing the incomes of the rural population, expanding the market, and increasing exports. Purpose. To identify patterns of return on investment in human capital in the IT industry of Ukraine through a quantitative assessment of the relationship between the income of IT specialists and the experience and other characteristics of the specialist and the company, as well as the formation of relevant recommendations. Methodology. The empirical basis of the study was a survey on the salary of IT specialists in Ukraine conducted in December 2022. The methodological basis of the study was general scientific and special research methods, in particular, the method of ab)straction (to focus on the main determinants of the formation of IT specialists’ income), induction (to extrapolate the patterns found in the sample to the entire IT industry of Ukraine), economic mathematical modeling (for the construction of a multiple regression model that reflects the patterns of influence of factors on the income of IT specialists that exist in reality). Findings. It was established that among IT specialists people are predominant with little work experience (up to 5 years). The effect of experience on the growth rate of income has a decreasing non-linear nature, while the most noticeable increase in income is observed during the first years of work in the specialty. It was found that the highest-paid IT professionals are software development engineers, managers at various levels, and quality assurance engineers. It has been proven that the level of English proficiency has a positive effect on income. A higher level of remuneration for the work of IT specialists in product companies and startups compared to outsourcing or outstaffing companies has been established. Originality. It has been revealed that the relationship between the income of IT specialists and their work experience, profession, level of English language proficiency, and company type. Practical value. The applied value of the study lies in the ability to predict the income of IT specialists. The formed recommendations can be used in the activities of IT companies in terms of improving financial control over the spending of funds for the payment of services of IT specialists, assessing the feasibility of investing funds in personnel development, as well as substantiating the planned indicators of changes in the costs of paying for the services of IT specialists. The article considers the concept of “investment in human capital”, presents a theoretical and instru-mental interpretation of the main components of human capital. The current assessment methods and indicators that characterize the effectiveness of investments in human capital are summarized. Also, a comprehensive and critical analysis of the current methodological aspects for assessing the effectiveness of investments in human capital was made. As the main structural component of human capital, a special place is given to education, which is considered as a property in the form of professional features and a self-increasing value based on an increase in the productivity of an employee, and, accordingly, is com-bined with an increase in wages. The creation of a methodology for assessing the economic efficiency of investments in education at the macroeconomic level is based on a comparison of public investment in education and the average salary in the country. The average salary is considered as a productive indica-tor of the effectiveness of investments in education. The money that is spent on educating the growing generation will in the foreseeable future determine the degree of education of the population of the state, and in turn, its competitive advantage in the world community. The proposed model for evaluating the effectiveness of investments in education is simple and convenient, it is able to link the efficiency of the company and the cost of human capital. The article shows the results of assessing the effectiveness of investments in the implementation of the State Program for the Development of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2020 – 2025. The analysis of statistical data for Kazakhstan also shows the existence of a close relationship between the remuneration of employees and the volume of invest-ment in education.

The specificity of the investment process in viticulture, resulting from the long period from planting the vineyard to its transformation into a productive asset, the long operating period and the significant amount of the initial investment, had determined the relatively high degree of risk (production, market and financial) in the implementation of this activity. The market situation, revealing the interaction between the price levels of production factors and the price levels of vine-growers, had an impact on the profitability, which affected the investment interest. In this aspect, the analysis of the structure and dynamics of the costs for creating the vineyard and its cultivation during the fruiting period, as well as the evaluation of the economic effect of grape production, had been an important tool of strategic planning in the sector, both at micro- and macro- level. The application of innovative approaches to the investment and operating costs management in viticulture, based on intelligent information systems, had supported the analytical process and the forecasting of cash flows, as a means of controlling the market and financial risk in vine growing farms. The study had systematized a significant number of sources from the scientific publications and the practice in countries having well developed viticulture and wine sector. The data revealed that tools structured on the basis of computer software, aimed at the assessment of investment and operating costs, the production profitability and the return on investment decisions, had been increasingly used in practice. This article discusses how the traditional approach of measuring performance using time-weighted compounded returns can lead to grossly misleading conclusions in the context of two examples of practical interest. First, the authors show how measuring tail-risk hedging performance using only compounded returns, rather than both returns and timing of cash flows in the context of the underlying portfolio, can lead to erroneous conclusions about the value added by such hedges. Second, they show how measuring performance using compounded returns alone and ignoring timing and size of investment flows can result in contradictory conclusions about the long-term profitability of such investments, using the ARKK exchange-traded fund as an example. They conclude that a more complete approach to performance measurement is essential in order for investors to not be misled by oversimplified metrics, such as compounded returns. Better performance on any single component of total performance should, ceteris paribus, be associated with a better assessment of total performance. Common measures of stock or portfolio performance in finance, such as Jensen's alpha or the intercept of the Fama-French three-factor model, often fail this test. The reason is that the intercept's ability to detect abnormal performance is critically dependent on accurately estimating the slope(s). Unfortunately, the same unsystematic perturbation to stock returns that causes abnormal performance typically distorts the estimate of the slope. This article quantifies the distortion in the intercept due to errors in estimating the slope(s). It also identifies necessary and sufficient conditions for the intercept to be so misleading as to move in the direction opposite that of the shock and estimates the frequency of these conditions. We propose a conditional factor model for corporate bond returns with five factors and time‐varying factor loadings. We have three main empirical findings. First, our factor model excels in describing the risks and returns of corporate bonds, improving over previously proposed models in the literature by a large margin. Second, our model recommends a systematic bond investment portfolio whose high out‐of‐sample Sharpe ratio suggests that the credit risk premium is notably larger than previously estimated. Recent research has proven that the application of mean-variance portfolio selection is justified if, and only if, asset returns follow a skew-elliptical generalized location and scale (SEGLS) distribution. This irrefutably corrects the widespread fallacy that mean-variance analysis can be used only for portfolios with normally or symmetrically distributed constituents. To make this important finding accessible to a wide range of academics and practitioners, the authors of this article present it in a nontechnical form and additionally highlight that, under the SEGLS distribution and some mild axiomatic requirements, mean-variance analysis and many alternative mean-risk approaches deliver the same optimal portfolios. In a numerical study, they illustrate the key features of the novel SEGLS distribution. This article contributes to the longstanding debate about the relative merits of building multifactor portfolios using a bottom-up approach, informed by factor-based expected returns, and a top-down approach that allocates across factor portfolios. Its main contribution is to prove formally that the solution of the mean-variance optimization solved by a stock picker who uses factors to select securities and that of a mean-variance-efficient allocation across factors are in fact largely equivalent. This finding is corroborated empirically and holds under stringent investment constraints. The company's business activities are increasing and growing, creating a fairly tight business competition. In terms of accounting regulations, companies are also competing to apply records that are in accordance with standards for the benefit of stakeholders. The application of PSAK 73 itself Raja is a challenge for companies to implement in their business activities. This study aims to analyze the impact of implementing PSAK 73 on the financial performance of food and beverage companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange for the 2019-2021 period. Financial performance will be measured by financial ratios such as ROA (Return on Assets), ROI (Return on investment), ROE (Return on Equity), Current Ratio and DER (Debt to Equity). We investigate the relation between tax rates and pretax returns by showing how implicit tax, tax incidence, and tax capitalization change in response to a tax rate change. We examine these issues in the context of both financial assets and real investments made by corporations in a competitive equilibrium in which all investments earn the same after-tax rate of return. Results show that the pretax return increases in the statutory tax rate due to an explicit tax rate effect and decreases due to a cost of capital effect; the net effect is ambiguous. In contrast, the implicit tax rate is weakly increasing in the statutory tax rate. We also relate our findings to the empirical literature on the effects of taxes on pretax returns. This study compared the performance of indexed universal life (IUL) insurance policies with 529 college saving plans in college education planning by Monte-Carlo simulations and sensitivity analysis. The IUL policies showed lower return and risk than the allstock 529 portfolios but higher return and risk than the typical age-based 529 portfolios. The expected family contribution (EFC) impact should be considered in the decision-making process. All key market variables were modeled as correlated stochastic processes in the simulation. Important actuarial assumptions and tax-related issues driving the performance of the IUL and 529 investments were thoroughly analyzed. Renewable energy technologies play a crucial role in solving global energy and environmental issues, and the pace of the energy transition directly depends on improving their efficiency. Presently, the development and implementation of renewable energy systems are ensured mainly through state funding, the possibilities of which are limited. The potential of attracting private investments depends directly on their impact on companies' profitability indicators, and the uncertainty regarding the return on investments is one of the main barriers affecting investors' decision-making. Based on a vector autoregressive model for analysing the stationary time series, the paper explores the impact of long-term investments and research and development costs in renewable energy technologies on the financial performance of ten of the largest companies operating in this field. The study's results showed that investments and spending on research and development positively affect such companies' profitability indicators as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, earnings before interest and tax, net income, and return on investment. The obtained results can be used to substantiate the economic effectiveness of investments in developing and improving renewable energy technologies when forming the companies' financial policies to support them. Crypto-currency is distinct featured digital asset designed to work as decentralized asset, yet it has raised many questions and doubts about its definition and regulations. Keeping in view the increasing interest of masses in crypto-currencies the research is extended to examine the role of crypto-currency in diversification of investment. Bivariate analysis of crypto-currency market and other asset classes like gold, exchange rate, stock returns and government bonds has been observed among countries where cryptocurrencies are being traded most frequently over 2013 to 2020. Theoretically the study intends to provide substantial support for risk management by using estimates like hedge ratio, VECM and BEKK GARCH. Practically the study aims to provide empirical justifications for investors, managers and policy makers to figure out exactly where crypto-currencies stand along with other asset classes, and what actually it brings to the financial system. It concludes that there is long term causal relationship running from traditional assets to crypto-currency market, co-movements are observed. The change in crypto-currency returns may not affect returns of traditional assets yet as any change in traditional assets may possibly upsurge towards change in crypto-currency market in the long term which indicates opportunities for crypto-currencies to hedge. Investing is an unavoidable segment of any business activity. Investment decisions are associated with a certain amount of risk. Risk is a state in which there is a possibility of negative deviation from the desired outcome that we expect and hope for. The sensitivity of investments to certain types of risk depends on the specifics of the investment process, environment, type and size of risk. Higher exposure to risk factors results in higher expected returns. Measuring investment risk and reducing it by the method of diversification is the topic of this paper.

We examine the suitability of using overnight returns to measure firm-specific investor sentiment by analyzing whether they possess characteristics expected of a sentiment measure. We document short-term overnight-return persistence, consistent with existing evidence of short-term persistence in the share demand of sentiment-influenced investors. We find that short-term persistence is stronger for harder-to-value firms, consistent with existing evidence that sentiment plays a larger role for such firms. We show that stocks with high (low) overnight returns underperform (outperform) over the longer term, consistent with prior evidence of temporary sentiment-driven mispricing. This paper introduces a dynamic change of measure approach for computing analytical solutions of expected future prices (and therefore, expected returns) of contingent claims over a finite horizon. The new approach constructs hybrid probability measures called equivalent expectation measures (EEMs) that provide the physical expectation of the claim's future price before the horizon date, and serve as pricing measures on or after the horizon date. The EEM theory can be used for empirical investigations of both the cross‐section and the term structure of returns of contingent claims, such as Treasury bonds, corporate bonds, and financial derivatives. The purpose of this study is to determine the location of the custom workshop business using the criteria of NPV, IRR, PBP, PI and B/C. This research method uses a field research model with the right procedure to use the net present value method, internal rate of return, payback period, profitability index and benefit cost ratio to determine the custome workshop business. The results of the criteria obtained are that NPV>0, IRR is 29.4%, PBP is 2.75 years, PI is 1.1.48 and B/C is 1.1. This level of achievement uses the world every day, there must be activities in the custome workshop to achieve the criteria. The criterion that becomes the dominant factor is the occurrence of an increase in the profitability index. This is a criterion that states there is an increase in the benefits of the specified investment value.
