Cities often exhibit higher temperatures, drier soils and greater habitat fragmentation than rural areas, and may thus represent constraining growing environments for plants. This variety of environmental conditions along urban-to-rural gradients might lead to plasticity in plant traits. Urban conditions could affect plant traits such as germination or flower number — key variables for organismal fitness. These proxies of fitness could then potentially experience strong selection in urban environments. Trait variations among individuals are not only due to genotype or the environmental conditions: they can also result from the conditions in which the mother individual developed, i.e. environmental maternal effects. Understanding the impact of city environments on phenotypes might be especially important for alien plant species, as these are often showing exceptionally high density and diversity in cities. However, studies of the sources of alien plant trait variations in urban environments are rare. We conducted a simulated reciprocal common garden experiment using seeds of populations of M. discoidea along urbanization gradients in Belgium. These seeds were sown in growth chambers to study how germination, growth, and flowering traits of the alien species Matricaria discoidea vary in response to temperature (rural or urban) and soil (rural or urban) treatments and the urbanity (percentage of impervious surfaces) of its source population. We found predominant effects of seed mass and germination delay which materialized important environmental maternal effects. We observed a higher germination success and delay for heavier seeds, and a greater number of capitula and dry biomass for plants that germinated earlier. Climate and soil treatments led to plasticity in the majority of the measured traits, with a faster germination and heavier plants in the urban temperature treatment but lighter plants in the urban soil treatment. Our results therefore support the existence of predominant environmental maternal effects and phenotypic plasticity in response to temperature and soil treatments, but no visible evidence of local adaptation. Urban environments often host a greater abundance and diversity of alien plant species than rural areas. This is frequently linked to higher disturbance and propagule pressure, but could also be related to the additional establishment of species from warmer native ranges in cities, facilitated by the latter's higher air temperatures and drier soils. A hitherto unresolved question is how stressful the urban environments become during climate extremes such as heatwaves and droughts. Do such episodes still favor alien plant species, or set them back? We used in situ measured phenotypic leaf and development trait responses of the six most widespread alien Asteraceae species from various native climates along Belgian urban‐to‐rural gradients, measured during two unusually warm and dry summers. Urbanization was characterized by three factors: the percentage of artificially sealed surfaces (urbanity, measured at three spatial scales from in situ to satellite‐based), the vegetation cover and the sky view factor (SVF, fraction of the hemisphere not blocked by buildings or vegetation). Across species, either from colder or warmer native climates, we found a predominant protective effect of shielded environments that block solar radiation (low SVF) along the entire urban‐to‐rural gradient. Such environments induced lower leaf anthocyanins and flavonols indices, indicating heat stress mitigation. Shielded environments also increased specific leaf area (SLA), a typical shade response. We found that vegetated areas had a secondary importance, increasing the chlorophyll content and decreasing the flavonols index, but these effects were not consistent across species. Finally, urbanity at the organism spatial scale decreased plant height, while broader‐scale urbanity had no significant influence. Our results suggest that sealed surfaces constrain alien Asteraceae during unusually warm and dry summers, while shielded environments protect them, possibly canceling out the lack of light. Identifying emerging invasive species is a priority to implement early preventive and control actions. In terms of the number of invasive tree species, forestry represents the second largest pathway of introduction, with an invasive debt likely existing for alien conifers in Europe. In the early 1900s, a network of arboreta was established in southern Belgium to assess the wood production potential of prospective conifer and broadleaved species. Here, we use eight arboreta as natural experiments to identify alien conifers presenting invasive behavior. Through systematic sampling, we quantified the natural regeneration of alien conifers and recorded local environmental variables. For each species, regeneration density, dispersal distances, and age structure were analyzed. Generalized mixed effects models were fitted to test the effect of planted area and tree-stand type on regeneration. The environmental space occupied by regenerating alien conifers was evaluated using principal component analysis. Out of 31 planted alien species, 15 (48%) were identified in natural regeneration, of which eight (26%) exhibited important regeneration density and dispersal distances. The most invasive species were Tsuga heterophylla and Abies grandis, confirming earlier field observations. Both large planted areas and areas planted with alien conifer species increased the density of regeneration. Species that had the highest regeneration density tolerated a wide range of environmental conditions, including shaded understory, which could lead to the invasion of mature, undisturbed forests. This study showed that 17% of the studied alien conifers are potentially invasive because they show important regeneration, long-distance dispersal, and, of importance, have already produced offspring that have matured and are capable of creating new satellite populations. In conclusion, our results provide a guideline for future planting operations, recommending extreme caution when planting these species in the temperate forests of Western Europe. Alien plant species invasion depends on biotic and abiotic conditions that can represent environmental barriers as compared to their native range conditions. Specifically, little is known about how alien plant species distribute along the urban-to-rural gradients based on their native climatic conditions, and how environmental conditions along these gradients could influence intraspecific trait variation. We studied the distribution of eight woody alien plant species from contrasted native range climates along urban-to-rural gradients in European areas with a temperate climate (hereafter termed oceanic Europe). During two consecutive summers and in the Belgian part of oceanic Europe, we then measured their intraspecific trait variation using the nitrogen balance index (NBI), chlorophyll content, flavonols index, specific leaf area (SLA) and internode space. Urban-to-rural gradients were characterized by a system of local climate zones (LCZ), the percentage of artificially sealed surfaces (urbanity) and the sky view factor (SVF). We found that the distribution of studied species in the LCZ classes was highly dependent on the climate of their native range, with species from warm climates occurring more in the most urban areas while the ones from cool climates preferred the more rural or natural areas. However, their intraspecific trait variation was not related to the LCZ class in which they grew, nor to their native climate. Instead, we found a surprisingly consistent effect of shielded environments (low SVF) along the entire urban-to-rural gradient on leaf and development traits. Such environments induced a lower leaf flavonols index and higher NBI and SLA, suggesting a shade response and possibly lower heat and drought stress. Our results show that although woody alien plant species from warmer or cooler native climates distributed differently along the urbanization gradient in oceanic Europe, they did not show contrasted intraspecific trait variation. Nevertheless, our findings highlight that even if the woody alien plant species from cooler native ranges are currently more present in the most natural areas, special attention should be paid to woody alien plant species from warmer native ranges that are yet restricted to the most urban areas and could potentially have severe impacts in the future when the barriers to their spread weaken with climate change. Vegetation management often involves shredding to dispose of cut plant material or to destroy the vegetation itself. In the case of invasive plants, this can represent an environmental risk if the shredded material exhibits vegetative regeneration capacities. We tested the effect of shredding on aboveground and below-ground vegetative material of five ornamental widespread invaders in Western Europe that are likely to be managed by cutting and shredding techniques: Buddleja davidii (butterfly bush, Scrophulariaceae), Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed, Polygonaceae), Spiraea × billardii Hérincq (Billard's bridewort, Rosaceae), Solidago gigantea (giant goldenrod, Asteraceae), and Rhus typhina L. (staghorn sumac, Anacardiaceae). We looked at signs of vegetative regeneration and biomass production, and analyzed the data with respect to the season of plant cutting (spring vs summer), the type of plant material (aboveground vs below-ground), and the shredding treatment (shredded vs control). All species were capable of vegetative regeneration, especially the below-ground material. We found differences among species, but the regeneration potential was generally still present after shredding despite a reduction of growth rates. Although it should not be excluded in all cases (e.g., destruction of giant goldenrod and staghorn sumac aboveground material), the use of a shredder to destroy woody alien plant material cannot be considered as a general management option without significant environmental risk.
