The main purpose of the Virtual Campus for Digital Students - ViCaDiS Project (2007 - 2009) is to assist international cooperation in learning by using social media and open source applications. ViCaDiS facilitates a shift from Institutional Learning Environments towards Personal Learning Environments. Digital students are young adults who have grown up with digital technologies integrated as an everyday feature of their lives. The paper describes the development of an online - mobile phone environment -ViCaDiS - Virtual Campus for Digital Students, as a co-operation between 6 universities from European Union to develop a common online learning environment enhanced with web 2.0 tools for supporting the online international co-operation at academic level. Recent years have seen a new generation of 'digital students' emerging in the developed world. Digital students are young adults who have grown up with digital technologies integrated as an everyday feature of their lives. Digital students use technology differently from previous generations of students, fluidly and often simultaneously using instant messengers, mobile phones, the Web, MP3 players, online games and more. A study performed in a UK university was designed to identify and evaluate the use of new technologies, especially of social software, by digital students. The study is part of a research project which is investigating how the development of the eLearning spaces might be informed by digital students' attitudes. This paper presents the results of a study performed in a British university designed to identify the unique features of 'digital students', as a move towards building a customized model of an eLearning environment. What does it mean to be a digital student? How might their characteristics influence the development of an adaptive and adaptable eLearning environment? A definition of digital students is refined and enhanced by the findings of the study, which includes both the active role of technology in their lives and also the students' need, at an independent level, to control their environment.
