Abstract

KAGRA is a newly built gravitational wave observatory, a laser interferometer with a 3 km arm length, located in Kamioka, Gifu, Japan. In this series of articles, we present an overview of the baseline KAGRA, for which we finished installing the designed configuration in 2019. This article describes the method of calibration (CAL) used for reconstructing gravitational wave signals from the detector outputs, as well as the characterization of the detector (DET). We also review the physical environmental monitors (PEM) system and the geophysics interferometer (GIF). Both are used for characterizing and evaluating the data quality of the gravitational wave channel. They play important roles in utilizing the detector output for gravitational wave searches. These characterization investigations will be even more important in the near future, once gravitational wave detection has been achieved, and in using KAGRA in the gravitational wave astronomy era., Comment: 2021/02/08 Accepted by PTEP

Abstract

KAGRA is a newly built gravitational-wave telescope, a laser interferometer comprising arms with a length of 3\,km, located in Kamioka, Gifu, Japan. KAGRA was constructed under the ground and it is operated using cryogenic mirrors that help in reducing the seismic and thermal noise. Both technologies are expected to provide directions for the future of gravitational-wave telescopes. In 2019, KAGRA finished all installations with the designed configuration, which we call the baseline KAGRA. In this occasion, we present an overview of the baseline KAGRA from various viewpoints in a series of of articles. Abstract

Modern ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors require a complex interferometer configuration with multiple coupled optical cavities. Since achieving the resonances of the arm cavities is the most challenging among the lock acquisition processes, the scheme called arm length stabilization (ALS) had been employed for lock acquisition of the arm cavities. We designed a new type of the ALS, which is compatible with the interferometers having long arms like the next generation GW detectors. The features of the new ALS are that the control configuration is simpler than those of previous ones and that it is not necessary to lay optical fibers for the ALS along the kilometer-long arms of the detector. Along with simulations of its noise performance, an experimental test of the new ALS was performed utilizing a single arm cavity of KAGRA. This paper presents the first results of the test where we demonstrated that lock acquisition of the arm cavity was achieved using the new ALS and residual noise was measured to be $8.2\,\mathrm{Hz}$ in units of frequency, which is smaller than the linewidth of the arm cavity and thus low enough to lock the full interferometer of KAGRA in a repeatable and reliable manner., Comment: 21 pages, 8figures

Abstract

A highly accurate two-color interferometer with automatic correction of the refractive index of air was developed for crustal strain observation. The two-color interferometer, which can measure a geometrical distance of approximately 70 m, with a relative resolution of 2 × 10−9, clearly detected a change in strain due to earth tides in spite of optical measurement in air. Moreover, a large strain quake due to an earthquake could be observed without disturbing the measurement. We demonstrated the advantages of the two-color interferometer in air for geodetic observation.

Abstract

The current definition of the meter has been based on ‘the speed of light’ since 1983. Length standard measurements are performed using laser interferometers and are generally conducted in air. Specifically, a long length (referred to as “distance”) is measured in air. The accuracy of distance measurements in air is limited by the refractivity of air, which can be determined with an accuracy of only approximately 10-8. For smaller uncertainties, we must measure distances in vacuum. For example, both laser strain meters, which are used for tectonic measurements, and laser interferometer gravitational wave detectors employ long-baseline interferometers in vacuum. Since the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors become worse by residual gases in vacuum, a pressure of less than 10-5 Pa is required for laser beam paths in the interferometer.

Abstract

Current status of TAMA and CLIO detectors in Japan is reported in this article. These two interferometric gravitational-wave detectors are being developed for the large cryogenic gravitational wave telescope (LCGT) which is a future plan for detecting gravitational wave signals at least once per year. TAMA300 is being upgraded to improve the sensitivity in low frequency region after the last observation experiment in 2004. To reduce the seismic noises, we are installing new seismic isolation system, which is called TAMA Seismic Attenuation System, for the four test masses. We confirmed stable mass locks of a cavity and improvements of length and angular fluctuations by using two SASs. We are currently optimizing the performance of the third and fourth SASs. We continue TAMA300 operation and R&D studies for LCGT. Next data taking in the summer of 2007 is planned. CLIO is a 100-m baseline length prototype detector for LCGT to investigate interferometer performance in cryogenic condition. The key features of CLIO are that it locates Kamioka underground site for low seismic noise level, and adopts cryogenic Sapphire mirrors for low thermal noise level. The first operation of the cryogenic interferometer was successfully demonstrated in February of 2006. Current sensitivity at room temperature is close to the target sensitivity within a factor of 4. Several observation experiments at room temperature have been done. The CLIO project including a 100 m baseline cryogenic gravitational wave laser interferometer and a 100 m baseline geophysical strain meter was conducted in the Kamioka mine in Japan to investigate the technical feasibility of the large-scale cryogenic gravitational wave telescope (LCGT), which is planned to be constructed in the same Kamioka mine with 30 times longer baseline than CLIO, and to demonstrate the collaborative operation between these instruments about long-term continuous operation and gravitational wave signal veto analysis. About the cryogenic gravitational wave interferometer, the whole vacuum system and four cryostats, which house and cool sapphire mirrors, were constructed, and the required vacuum level of 10 −6 mbar and the temperature of 8 K at the inner radiation shield in the cryostat were achieved. About the geophysical strain meter, the obtained geophysical strain in the Kamioka mine was successfully simulated with a finite element model with a good agreement with less than 5% error. The strain meter also verified a permanent ground step change of micrometre order due to some earthquakes. We present the recent progress about the CLIO project.

Abstract

Cryogenic Laser Interferometer Observatory (CLIO) is a laser interferometric gravitational wave detector using cryogenic cooled mirrors. In order to cool the mirrors, cryogenic environment is necessary. We made four vacuum chambers with cryogenic cooled shields inside. The mirror is suspended by a mirror suspension system with a heat path for transferring heat from the mirror to the shield. Test cooling of the chambers and the mirror suspension system has been done. After one week cooling, the chambers was cooled from 8K to 10K and the mirror were cooled at 21K successfully.

Abstract

The CLIO project involves the Cryogenic Laser Interferometer Observatory (CLIO) detector complex for gravitational wave detection and the Kamioka Laser Interferometric Strainmeter for the acquisition of geophysical data. CLIO has been constructed to demonstrate the feasibility of a future project, the Large-scale Cryogenic Gravitational wave Telescope (LCGT). It will utilize the low seismic and stable environment of the Kamioka mine as well as sapphire mirrors and suspension fibres at low temperature to reduce thermal noise. We designed CLIO to have a noise level limited by the thermal noise of sapphire mirrors and sapphire suspension fibres, which vary from 3 × 10−19 m Hz−1/2 at 300 K to 2 × 10−20 m Hz−1/2 at 20 K around 100 Hz. The strainmeter has already succeeded in monitoring the Earth's tidal motion with a strain sensitivity of 2 × 10−12. The seismic noise veto between these same-scale interferometers is expected to provide an effective means of data selection for the gravitational wave signal analysis, and the ground motion data obtained by the strainmeter will help to maintain the stable operation of CLIO.

Abstract

Laser frequency stabilization is essential for interferometric gravitational-wave detectors to attain their target sensitivity. We have designed a multistage laser frequency stabilization system which has been applied in the development of the TAMA 300 gravitational-wave detector in Japan. The control topology consisting of two cascaded loops were employed to secure high feedback gain and reliable detector operation and thus allow the best frequency stability and uninterrupted long-term observation. We achieved simultaneously a frequency stability of 5 × 10^(−5) Hz/√HZ , and a common-mode rejection ratio (which reduces the coupling of frequency noise to spurious signals in the detector) of 37 dB. The developed system enabled us to operate TAMA 300 with sufficient sensitivity and stability that it had the potential to register gravitational-wave events. The system was confirmed to be suitable for a gravitational-wave detector from the observation run of TAMA 300.

Construction of CLIO (cryogenic laser interferometer observatory) with 100 m baseline length has begun in the Kamioka mine. The tunnel for CLIO has been dug and infrastructure work is now in progress. CLIO is the final step to LCGT (large scale cryogenic gravitational wave telescope) and the first practical construction of a cryogenic interferometer in the world. The objective of CLIO is to demonstrate two of three features of LCGT, which are to utilize the quietness and stable environment of the underground site and to adopt cryogenic sapphire mirrors for thermal noise reduction. Also, it is a joint project by gravitational wave and geophysics researchers. CLIO has a locked Fabry–Perot configuration equipped with ring mode cleaners and cryocoolers to cool the sapphire mirrors to 20 K. The noise level of CLIO is designed to trace the thermoelastic noise of sapphire mirrors which varies from 10−18 m Hz−1/2 at 300 K to 10−19 m Hz−1/2 at 20 K around 100 Hz. A 7 m single-arm cryogenic test facility has been built at ICRR (Institute for Cosmic Ray Research), while the 20 m room temperature interferometer is in operation at Kamioka. Technical knowledge developed by these prototypes will be leveraged to realize CLIO.

The developed light source has high power, TEM00 mode, linear polarization, high frequency stability, and low intensity noise. Abstract

TAMA300, an interferometric gravitational-wave detector with 300-m baseline length, has been developed and operated with sufficient sensitivity to detect gravitational-wave events within our galaxy and sufficient stability for observations; the interferometer was operated for over 10 hours stably and continuously. With a strain-equivalent noise level of $h\sim 5 \times 10^{-21} /\sqrt{\rm Hz}$, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30 is expected for gravitational waves generated by a coalescence of 1.4 $M_\odot$-1.4 $M_\odot$ binary neutron stars at 10 kpc distance. %In addition, almost all noise sources which limit the sensitivity and which %disturb the stable operation have been identified. Abstract

Some phase errors in a two-color interferometer result in a large uncertainty in length measurement due to the large A coefficient. We analyzed three kinds of phase errors, correlation, semi-correlation and non-correlation errors, and presented a weight average method to deal with different errors by using different weight factors. The uncertainties in length measurement can be reduced without effects on the resolution of length measurement. The experimental results show that the length can be obtained with a standard deviation of approximately 0.1 μ m by measuring the phase of the interference fringe using a heterodyne interferometry and processing the measured data using a weight average method.

Abstract

The thermal fluctuation of mirror surfaces is the fundamental limitation for interferometric gravitational wave (GW) detectors. Here, we experimentally demonstrate for the first time a reduction in a mirror's thermal fluctuation in a GW detector with sapphire mirrors from the Cryogenic Laser Interferometer Observatory at 17\,K and 18\,K. The detector sensitivity, which was limited by the mirror's thermal fluctuation at room temperature, was improved in the frequency range of 90\,Hz to 240\,Hz by cooling the mirrors. The improved sensitivity reached a maximum of $2.2 \times 10^{-19}\,\textrm{m}/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ at 165\,Hz., Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters, 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We achieved for the first time a direct measurement of the thermal fluctuation of a pendulum in an off-resonant region using a laser interferometric gravitational wave detector. These measurements have been well identified for over one decade by an agreement with a theoretical prediction, which was derived by a fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Thermal fluctuation is dominated by the contribution of resistances in coil-magnet actuator circuits. When we tuned these resistances, the noise spectrum also changed according to a theoretical prediction. The measured thermal noise level corresponds to a high quality factor on the order of 10^5 of the pendulum., 10 pages, 4 figures

The Large-scale Cryogenic Gravitational wave Telescope (LCGT) is planned as a future Japanese project for gravitational wave detection. A 3 km interferometer will be built in an underground mine at Kamioka. Cryogenic sapphire mirrors are going to be employed for the test masses. For the demonstration of LCGT technologies, two prototype interferometers, TAMA300 and CLIO, are being developed. This paper describes the current status of the LCGT project and the two prototype interferometers.

Abstract

We search for continuous gravitational waves from PSR J0835-4510 at twice its rotational frequency using CLIO (Cryogenic Laser Interferometric Observatory) in the Kamioka mine. In this search, we use data from an observational run during 12–28 February 2007. We give a brief description of the methods used in this search. We obtain an upper limit on gravitational wave amplitude for PSR J0835-4510 as h0(UL) = 5.3 × 10−20 with 99.4% confidence level.

Abstract

CLIO (Cryogenic Laser Interferometer Observatory) is a Japanese gravitational wave detector project. One of the main purposes of CLIO is to demonstrate thermal-noise suppression by cooling mirrors for a future Japanese project, LCGT (Large-scale Cryogenic Gravitational Telescope). The CLIO site is in Kamioka mine, as is LCGT. The progress of CLIO between 2005 and 2007 (room- and cryogenic-temperature experiments) is introduced in this article. In a room-temperature experiment, we made efforts to improve the sensitivity. The current best sensitivity at 300 K is about $6 \times 10^{-21} /\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ around 400 Hz. Below 20 Hz, the strain (not displacement) sensitivity is comparable to that of LIGO, although the baselines of CLIO are 40-times shorter (CLIO: 100m, LIGO: 4km). This is because seismic noise is extremely small in Kamioka mine. We operated the interferometer at room temperature for gravitational wave observations. We obtained 86 hours of data. In the cryogenic experiment, it was confirmed that the mirrors were sufficiently cooled (14 K). However, we found that the radiation shield ducts transferred 300K radiation into the cryostat more effectively than we had expected. Abstract

In order to detect the rare astrophysical events that generate gravitational wave (GW) radiation, sufficient stability is required for GW antennas to allow long-term observation. In practice, seismic excitation is one of the most common disturbances effecting stable operation of suspended-mirror laser interferometers. A straightforward means to allow more stable operation is therefore to locate the antenna, the ``observatory'', at a ``quiet'' site. A laser interferometer gravitational wave antenna with a baseline length of 20m (LISM) was developed at a site 1000m underground, near Kamioka, Japan. This project was a unique demonstration of a prototype laser interferometer for gravitational wave observation located underground. The extremely stable environment is the prime motivation for going underground. Abstract

NMIJ line standard interferometer has been modified for measurement of a linear scale module with analog output. The interferometer was developed for line standard calibration. The light source is a stabilized He-Ne laser. Before the modification, a line standard can be calibrated with an uncertainty of about 0.2 micrometer for the total length of 500 mm (k=2). After the modification, a linear scale module can be calibrated as well as a line standard. A linear scale is set in a support on a moving carriage. The displacement of the moving carriage is measured by the interferometer with a sampling frequency of 30 kHz to 300 kHz while the electronic output of the linear scale module is sampled with the same timing. The analog output of the line scale module is used instead of digital output because it is important to assure the simultaneous sampling of the displacement and the scale output.

Abstract

A new method has been demonstrated for absolute-length measurements of a long-baseline Fabry–Perot cavity by use of phase-modulated light. This method is based on determination of a free spectral range (FSR) of the cavity from the frequency difference between a carrier and phase-modulation sidebands, both of which resonate in the cavity. Sensitive response of the Fabry–Perot cavity near resonant frequencies ensures accurate determination of the FSR and thus of the absolute length of the cavity. This method was applied to a 300-m Fabry–Perot cavity of the TAMA gravitational wave detector that is being developed at the National Astronomical Observatory, Tokyo. With a modulation frequency of ∼12 MHz, we successfully determined the absolute cavity length with resolution of 1 µm (3 × 10-9 in strain) and observed local ground strain variations of 6 × 10-8.

Abstract

We report on the development of a new type of mode cleaner that reduces any geometric noise of the laser beam in an interferometric gravitational-wave detector. The mode cleaner is a Fabry-Perot cavity that comprises independently suspended mirrors and works as a frequency-stabilization reference as well as a mode selector; the length of the cavity is 1 m. Stand-alone tests have shown at least a 30-dB reduction in the geometric fluctuation of the beam and a 60-dB reduction of the frequency noise of the laser. We have also succeeded in operating a 20-m Fabry-Perot prototype detector (at the National Astronomical Observatory, Tokyo, Japan) by using this mode cleaner.
