In this paper, we study the diversity-multiplexing-gain tradeoff (DMT) of wireless relay networks under the half-duplex constraint. It is often unclear what penalty if any, is imposed by the half-duplex constraint on the DMT of such networks. We study two classes of networks; the first class, called KPP(I) networks, is the class of networks with the relays organized in K parallel paths between the source and the destination. While we assume that there is no direct source-destination path, the K relaying paths can interfere with each other. In this paper, a general framework of constructing the optimal frequency-hopping sequence (FHS) sets is presented based on the designated direct product. Under this framework, we obtain infinitely many new optimal FHS sets by combining some one-coincide (OC) sequence sets that are newly constructed in this paper with some known optimal FHS sets. Our constructions are also based on extension method. However, our constructions give new and flexible parameters due to the free choice of OC sequence set. We investigate a probabilistic model for routeing in a multihop ad hoc communication network, where each user sends a message to the base station. Messages travel in hops via other users, used as relays. Their trajectories are chosen at random according to a Gibbs distribution, which favors trajectories with low interference, measured in terms of signal-to-interference ratio. This model was introduced in our earlier paper, where we expressed, in the limit of a high density of users, the typical distribution of the family of trajectories in terms of a law of large numbers. In this paper, we derive its qualitative properties. We analytically identify the emerging typical scenarios in three extreme regimes. We analyze the typical number of hops and the typical length of a hop and the deviation of the trajectory from the straight line, regime 1 in the limit of a large communication area and large distances and regime 2 in the limit of a strong interference weight. In both the regimes, the typical trajectory approaches a straight line quickly, in regime 1 with equal hop lengths. Interestingly, in regime 2, the typical length of a hop diverges logarithmically in the distance of the transmitter to the base station. The dominate spectrum sharing paradigm of today is interference avoidance, where a secondary network can use the spectrum only when such a use is not interfering with the primary network. However, with the advances of physical-layer technologies, the mindset of this paradigm is being challenged. This paper explores a new paradigm called “transparent coexistence” for spectrum sharing between primary and secondary nodes in a multihop network environment. Under this paradigm, the secondary network is allowed to use the same spectrum simultaneously with the primary network as long as their activities are “transparent” (or “invisible”) to the primary network. Such transparency is accomplished through a systematic interference cancelation (IC) by the secondary nodes without any impact on the primary network. Although such a paradigm has been studied in the information theory (IT) and communications (COMM) communities, it is not well understood in the wireless networking community, particularly for multihop networks. This paper offers an in-depth study of this paradigm in a multihop network environment and addresses issues such as scheduling (both in frequency channels and time slots) and IC (to/from primary network and within the secondary network). Through a rigorous modeling and formulation, problem formulation, solution development, and simulation results, we show that transparent coexistence paradigm offers significant improvement in terms of spectrum access and throughput performance as compared to the current prevailing interference avoidance paradigm. In literatures, there are various constructions of frequency hopping sequence (FHS for short) sets with good Hamming correlations. Some papers employed only multiplicative groups of finite fields to construct FHS sets, while other papers implicitly used only additive groups of finite fields for construction of FHS sets. In this paper, we make use of both multiplicative and additive groups of finite fields simultaneously to present a construction of optimal FHS sets. The construction provides a new family of optimal $\left ({{q}^{{m}}-1,\frac {{q}^{{m}-{t}}-1}{{r}},{\it{ rq}}^{{t}};\frac {{q}^{{m}-{t}}-1}{{r}}+1}\right)$ frequency hopping sequence sets archiving the Peng-Fan bound. Thus, some FHS sets constructed in literatures using either multiplicative groups or additive groups of finite fields are included in our family. We present a distributed stable protocol for local broadcast in multi-hop wireless networks, where packets are injected to the nodes continuously, and each node needs to quickly disseminate the injected packets to all its neighbors within a given communication range $R$. We investigate the maximum packet injection rate and the minimum packet latency that can be achieved in a stable protocol. This paper assumes the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) interference model, which reflects more accurately the physical characteristics of the wireless interference, such as fading and signal accumulation, than conventional local interference models, e.g., graph-based models. More specifically, we present a stable protocol that can handle both stochastic and adversarial injection patterns. The protocol is asymptotically optimal in terms of both injection rate and packet latency. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first one studying the properties of stable protocols for the basic primitive of local broadcast in a multi-hop setting under SINR. Our proposed protocol utilizes a static local broadcast algorithm as a subroutine. This static algorithm is of independent interest, and it closes the $O(\log n)$ gap between the upper and lower bounds for static local broadcast. The problem of disseminating continuous data flow from a given source node to all other network nodes is known as the dynamic broadcast problem, which is also a fundamental problem in multi-hop wireless networks (e.g., wireless ad hoc and sensor networks). Due to link unreliability and node mobility, the topology of a network typically changes with time. Little work has been conducted to address the dynamic broadcast problem in time-varying wireless multi-hop networks, especially under the popular Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR) interference model. In this paper, we study the dynamic broadcast problem in SINR-based time-varying directed acyclic multi-hop wireless networks formed by point-to-point wireless links. We consider the SINR-based link transmission rate model involved in the slot-based link scheduling. We first prove a tight upper bound for the broadcast capacity of the multi-hop wireless networks under study. We then propose an online max-weight Throughput-Optimal Dynamic Broadcast algorithm (TODB) which performs link weight allocation, link scheduling, and data forwarding for each time slot according to the current network connectivity and data reception rates of nodes. We derive the throughput-optimality of the TODB algorithm by proving that the broadcast throughput of TODB can achieve the aforementioned upper bound of the broadcast capacity. This paper proposes a novel approach to assess the performance in terms of end-to-end throughput of an ad hoc multi-hop wireless network, where each link is affected by interference coming from other multi-hop paths nearby. The approach captures the mutual impact of each path on all others. It can be applied to both, contention-based and scheduled, medium access control (MAC) protocols. Sources have data to send to destination nodes through $n$ relays. Nodes are assumed to be uniformly and randomly distributed in the 2-D infinite plane. The model shows the impact on the end-to-end throughput of $n$ ; it also captures the influence of node density, traffic generated, number of retransmissions, and other MAC parameters. Finally, the model provides the throughput-delay tradeoff. Unlike most previous approaches, the mathematical tool proposed appears to be scalable, allowing easy extension to any number of hops. There have been some rapid advances on the design of full duplex (FD) transceivers in recent years. Although the benefits of FD have been studied for single-hop wireless communications, its potential on throughput performance in a multi-hop wireless network remains unclear. As for multi-hop networks, a fundamental problem is to compute the achievable end-to-end throughput for one or multiple communication sessions. The goal of this paper is to offer some fundamental understanding on end-to-end throughput performance limits of FD in a multi-hop wireless network. We show that through a rigorous mathematical formulation, we can cast the multi-hop throughput performance problem into a formal optimization problem. Through numerical results, we show that in many cases, the end-to-end session throughput in a FD network can exceed $2 \times$ of that in a half duplex (HD) network. Our finding can be explained by the much larger design space for scheduling that is offered by removing HD constraints in throughput maximization problem. Device-to-device (D2D) communication permits direct communication between devices, thereby it provides performance gain for traditional cellular networks. In this paper, we investigate how to improve the performance of D2D communication while satisfying the delay constraint for practical applications. Closed-form expressions are derived for trade-offs among system performance, such as successful transmission probability, transmission capacity, delay constraint, and energy consumption. In addition, two schemes are proposed to improve the performance for D2D communication under a given delay constraint. First, an optimal transmission scheme is proposed in which the transmission of user equipment (UE) can be scheduled adaptively to have the best successful transmission probability, whereas the D2D link satisfies the delay constraint. Second, a delay assignment scheme is proposed in which delay is adaptively assigned for each hop to achieve the maximum capacity when the network employs multihop D2D communication. Simulation results show that the adaptive transmission scheme improves the successful transmission probability (e.g., increased by 13 times when the source density is \text10^-4) compared with the fixed-probability transmission scheme, although it can satisfy the delay constraints for different applications. Providing guaranteed quality of service (QoS) for multimedia applications is a challenging topic in wireless mesh networks (WMNs). This paper proposes a distributed resource reservation (RR) mechanism with novel admission control to guarantee QoS performance of real-time sessions (RTSNs) while improving bandwidth utilization in WMNs. The proposed RR mechanism establishes logical clusters (LCs) for identifying interference relationships between nodes and avoids simultaneous transmissions from interfering nodes. Following the established LCs, a cooperative contention and collision-free channel access is achieved in hybrid medium access control (MAC) for multihop data forwarding in WMNs. To efficiently utilize the scarce resources in a contention-free period, soft and hard resources are reserved for RTSNs according to their QoS demands. This is achieved by a novel admission control algorithm. Furthermore, an analytical model is derived for investigating the RR parameters of the proposed mechanism. Recently, multiple concurrent transmission techniques have been proposed for smartly exploiting interference to improve network throughput. This paper considers zero-forcing (ZF) precoding that allows two interfering links to concurrently transmit under certain situations. This paper focuses on identifying appropriate schedule schemes that efficiently utilize the ZF precoding opportunities to improve network throughput. With this motivation, we define novel link models to formulate our concerned problem. We also develop a distributed scheduling algorithm by using belief propagation. Finally, we conduct extensive simulation experiments to evaluate the efficiency of ZF in improving network throughput in multihop wireless networks. Millimeter Wave (mmWave) communications are evolving as a potential and promising technology to address the ever increasing mobile data rate requirements. This paper addresses fair scheduling in directional antenna based mmWave wireless personal and local area networks with non-uniform traffic demand. Due to their small wavelength, mmWave signals are susceptible to blockage. The proposed fair schedulers handle the link blockage problem through relaying, and are capable of providing end-to-end fair bandwidth allocation to relay flows. To achieve differentiated and fair service allocation to various regions of the network while using only limited flow related information, a service tag based scheduler is proposed in this paper. Then, the performance bounds on the minimum throughput and unfairness of this scheduler are obtained. To approximate the performance of the service tag based scheduler while minimizing the control overhead, a heuristic fair scheduler is also proposed. Results from extensive simulations conducted in a mmWave WPAN deployed to support high data rate applications show the performance advantages of the proposed schedulers, compared to existing fair schedulers, in terms of throughput and fairness. Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) rely on a set of radar sensors operated on frequency modulated waveforms. Due to the large bandwidth requirement of frequency modulated radars, only a limited number of proximate vehicles can be allowed for a concurrent transmission within the available spectrum. However, with the explosive growth of AVs, the available spectrum may soon reach its capacity. As a results, the coexistence of multiple AVs working on same resource, may lead to the problem of Radar-to-Radar (R2R) interference, also known as radar blindness. In this paper, we propose the notion of coded waveforms to minimize the R2R interference among the vehicles operating on the same resource. Specifically, the spread spectrum codes have been used as another degree of freedom (i.e., along with time-frequency resources) to spread the inter-vehicular radar interference over the wider spectrum, which enable to orthogonalize more number of AVs over the available range of spectrum. In addition, we have formulated a Spread Spectrum-based Radar Transmission Scheme (SS-RTS), and described the transmission and reception through SS-RTS. Also, the SS-RTS has been compared with the existing Graph-based Resource Allocation (GRA) scheme. In this paper, we consider a decode-and-forward-based wireless multihop network with a single source node, a single destination node, and $N$ intermediate nodes. To increase the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of the system, we propose a cooperative multihop communication protocol with spatial reuse, in which interference is treated as noise or can be canceled. The performance of a spatial-reused space–time-coded cooperative multihop network is analyzed over Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, the exact closed-form expression for the outage probability at the $n$th receiving node is derived when there are multiple interference sources over non-i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the outage probability expressions are derived when nodes are equipped with more than one antenna. In addition, to reduce the effect of interference on multihop transmission, we propose a simple power control scheme that is only dependent on the statistical knowledge of channels. In the second approach for managing the interference, linear interference cancelation schemes are employed for both noncooperative and cooperative spatial-reused multihop transmissions. Finally, the analytic results were confirmed by simulations. Simulation results show that the spatial-reused multihop transmission outperforms the interference-free multihop transmission in terms of energy efficiency in low- and medium-signal-to-noise scenarios. Underwater acoustic (UWA) networks are a key form of communications for human exploration and activities in the oceanographic space of the earth. A fundamental issue of UWA communications is large propagation delays due to water medium, which has posed a grand challenge in UWA network protocol design. Conventional wisdom of addressing this issue is to live with this disadvantage by inserting a guard interval to introduce immunity to propagation delays. Recent advances in interference alignment (IA) open up a new direction to address this issue and promise a great potential to improve network throughput by exploiting large propagation delays. In this paper, we investigate propagation delay-based IA (PD-IA) in multi-hop UWA networks. We first develop a set of simple constraints to characterize PD-IA feasible region at the physical layer. Based on the set of PD-IA constraints, we develop a distributed PD-IA scheduling algorithm to greedily maximize interference overlapping possibilities in a multi-hop UWA network. Simulation results show that the proposed PD-IA algorithm yields higher throughput than an idealized benchmark algorithm without propagation delays, indicating that large propagation delays are not adversarial but beneficial for network throughput performance. In this paper, we consider random-access wireless multihop networks, with multipacket reception capabilities, where multiple flows are forwarded to the gateways through node disjoint paths. We explore the issue of allocating flow on multiple paths, exhibiting both intra- and interpath interference, in order to maximize average aggregate flow throughput (AAT) and provide bounded packet delay. A distributed flow allocation scheme is proposed where allocation of flow on paths is formulated as an optimization problem. Through an illustrative topology, it is shown that the corresponding problem is nonconvex. Furthermore, a simple but accurate model is employed for the AAT achieved by all flows, which captures both intra- and interpath interference through the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) model. The proposed scheme is evaluated through Ns2 simulations of several random wireless scenarios. Simulation results reveal that the model employed accurately captures the AAT observed in the simulated scenarios, even when the assumption of saturated queues is removed. Simulation results also show that the proposed scheme achieves significantly higher AAT for the vast majority of the wireless scenarios explored than for the following flow allocation schemes: one that assigns flows on paths on a round-robin fashion, one that optimally utilizes the best path (BP) only, and another one that assigns the maximum possible flow on each path. The transparent coexistence (TC) paradigm allows simultaneous activation of the secondary users with the primary users as long as their interference to the primary users can be properly canceled. This paradigm has the potential to offer much more efficient spectrum sharing than the traditional interweave paradigm. In this paper, we design a distributed algorithm to achieve this paradigm for a secondary multi-hop network. For interference cancelation (IC), we employ MIMO at secondary nodes. We present a distributed iterative algorithm to maximize each secondary session’s throughput while meeting all IC requirements under TC. By maintaining two local sets for each node, we can keep track of the node’s IC responsibility. Although no explicit node ordering is maintained in our distributed algorithm, we prove that our distributed data structure at each node (with the use of two local sets) can be mapped to an explicit global node ordering for IC among all nodes in the network. This guarantees that each active node’s degree-of-freedoms allocated for IC is feasible at the physical layer. Our algorithm is iterative in nature and all steps can be accomplished based on local information exchange among the neighboring nodes. We present the simulation results to show that the performance of our distributed algorithm is highly competitive when compared with an upper bound solution from the corresponding centralized problem. Denial-of-service attacks launched by malicious jammers can pose significant threats to infrastructure-less wireless networks without a centralized controller. While significant recent research efforts have dealt with such attacks and several possible countermeasures have been proposed, little attention has been paid to the idea of cooperative anti-jamming. Inspired by this observation, this paper proposes and studies a cooperative anti-jamming scheme designed to enhance the quality of links degraded by jammers. To achieve this objective, users are allowed to cooperate at two levels. First, they cooperate to optimally regulate their channel access probabilities, so that jammed users gain a higher share of channel utilization. Second, users leverage multiple-input single-output cooperative communication techniques to enhance the throughput of jammed links. The problem of optimal cooperative anti-jamming is formulated as a distributed pricing-based optimization problem, and a best-response algorithm is proposed to solve it in a distributed way. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves considerable gains (compared with traditional non-cooperative anti-jamming) especially under heavy traffic or high jamming power. This paper studies the coexistence of heterogeneous multi-hop networks, which use different physical-layer technologies. We propose a new paradigm, called cooperative interference mitigation (CIM), which exploits recent advancement in interference cancellation (IC), such as technology-independent multiple output. CIM makes it possible for disparate networks to cooperatively mitigate the interference to/from each other to enhance everyone’s performance. We first show the feasibility of CIM among heterogeneous multi-hop networks by exploiting only channel-ratio information. Then, we establish two tractable models to characterize the CIM behaviors of both networks by using full IC and receiver-side IC only. We propose two bi-criteria optimization problems aiming at maximizing both networks’ throughput, while cooperatively canceling the interference between them based on our two models. Several simulations are carried out to compare the Pareto-optimal throughput curves by using our CIM paradigms and traditional interference-avoidance (IAV) paradigm. Recently, degree-of-freedom (DoF)-based models have been widely used to study MIMO network performance. Existing DoF-based models differ in their interference cancellation (IC) behavior and many of them suffer from either loss of solution space or possible infeasible solutions. To overcome these limitations, a new DoF-based model, which employs an IC scheme based on node-ordering was proposed. In this paper, we apply this new DoF IC model to study a throughput maximization problem in a multihop MIMO network. The problem formulation involves joint consideration of flow routing and DoF allocation and falls in the form of a mixed-integer linear program (MILP). Our main contribution is an efficient polynomial time algorithm that offers a competitive solution to the MILP through a series of linear programs (LPs). The algorithm employs a sequential fixing framework to obtain an initial feasible solution and then improves the solution by exploiting: 1) the impact of node ordering on DoF consumption for IC at a node and 2) route diversity in the network. In frequency hopping (FH) wireless communications, finding an effective transmission strategy to properly mitigate jamming has been recently considered as a critical issue, due to the inherent broadcast nature of wireless communications. Recently, game theory has been proposed as a powerful tool for dealing with the jamming problem, which can be considered as a player (jammer) playing against a user (transmitter). Different from existing results, in this paper, a bimatrix game framework is developed for modeling the interaction process between the transmitter and the jammer, and the sufficient and necessary conditions for Nash equilibrium (NE) strategy of the game are obtained under the linear constraints. Furthermore, the relationship between the NE solution and the global optimal solution of the corresponding quadratic programming is presented. In addition, a special analysis case is developed based on the continuous game framework in which each player has a continuum of strategies. Radio Frequency jamming attacks constitute a major threat to the availability of the vehicular networks. In particular, if the control channel is under persistent jamming attacks, the victim vehicles may fail to receive the safety related messages from the Road Side Unit, which can possibly cause tremendous economic loss and claim human lives. In this paper, we propose a cooperative relaying scheme to circumvent the control channel jamming problem in the vehicular networks, whereby the vehicles outside of the jamming area serve as relays to help forward the received control channel signal to the victim vehicles through another jamming-free service channel. By combining the signals from all relays using the selection combining or maximum-ratio combining methods, the spatial diversity provided by the relays can be effectively exploited to reduce the outage probability of the victim vehicles. Theoretical models are developed to characterize the performance of this cooperative antijamming relaying scheme, which take into account both the large-scale path loss and small-scale channel fading between relaying and victim vehicles under different jamming scenarios. We also propose a relay selection scheme to optimize the performance of the victim vehicles under the relay number constraint. The optimum designs of multihop networks operating in an interference-limited environment are studied in this paper. The objective is to identify the optimum operation parameters that can maximize the end-to-end throughput of a multihop link in the network. The optimum designs are performed with respect to two parameters, the number of hops, and the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) threshold for successful transmission. Under a fixed total transmission power, more hops means shorter distance for each hop, but also less power per hop and longer delays. A higher SIR threshold can achieve a higher throughput by employing high-order modulations, but at the cost of a higher outage probability. We capture these tradeoff relationships by deriving the throughput, which is expressed as an explicit function of a number of system parameters. It is shown through theoretical analysis that the throughput is quasi-concave in the number of hops or the SIR threshold, and the optimum design parameters that can maximize the throughput are obtained analytically and verified through simulations. This paper analyzes the performance of a multi-user multihop relay network using a low complexity decentralized relay selection (DRS) scheme for decode-and-forward cooperative networks. We carry out a rigorous diversity order analysis, with Nakagami- $m$ fading and pathloss and show that the DRS scheme achieves full diversity while maintaining a complexity that is quadratic in the number of users, quadratic in the number of relays and independent of the number of hops. For a special case of two-user networks we derive exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability by considering the order statistics. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to consider interfering relay networks and derive an accurate lower bound on the outage of an arbitrary network user. Based on the lower bound we also show how the outage probability saturates in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio regime. Interference neutralization (IN) is regarded as a promising interference management techniques for multi-hop wireless networks. Yet most existing results of IN are limited to two-hop networks such as the relay-aided cellular network. Little progress has been made so far in the exploration of IN in generic multi-hop (more than two hops) networks. This paper aims to bridge this gap by developing an optimization framework for IN in a generic multi-hop network with the objective of maximizing the end-to-end throughput of multiple coexisting communication sessions. We first derive a mathematical model for IN in a special one-hop network to characterize the capability of IN, and then generalize this model to a multi-hop network. Based on the IN model, we develop a cross-layer optimization framework for a multi-hop network with the objective of fully translating the benefits of IN to the end-to-end throughput of the multi-hop sessions. To evaluate the performance of IN in multi-hop networks, we compare its performance against the case where IN is not employed. Simulation results show that the use of IN can significantly (more than 50%) increase the session throughput and, more notably, the throughput gain of IN increases with the node density and traffic intensity in the network. While considerable work has addressed the optimal AoI under different circumstances in single-hop networks, the exploration of AoI in multi-hop wireless networks is rarely attempted. More importantly, the inherent relationships between AoI and throughput are yet to be explored, especially in multi-hop networks. This paper studies AoI in multi-hop wireless networks and explores its potential relationships with throughput for the very first time, particularly focusing on the impacts of flexible routes on the two metrics, i.e., AoI and throughput. By developing a rigorous mathematical model with interference, channel allocation, link scheduling, and routing path selection taken into consideration, we build the interrelation between AoI and throughput in multi-hop networks. A multi-criteria optimization problem is formulated with the goal of simultaneously minimizing AoI and maximizing network throughput. By qualitatively analyzing their relationships, we exhibit that the two metrics may conflict with each other, implying the optimal solutions for the multi-criteria problem will include a set of Pareto-optimal points rather than a single point existing in the traditional optimization problem. We resort to a novel approach by transforming the multi-criteria problem into a single objective one so as to find the weakly Pareto-optimal points iteratively, thereby allowing us to screen all Pareto-optimal points for the solution. Through formal proof, our solution is demonstrated to be able to identify all Pareto-optimal points and terminate in a finite number of iterations. We conduct the simulation evaluation to identify the optimal tradeoff points of AoI and throughput, demonstrating that one performance metric may improve at the expense of degrading the other, with the routing path found as one of the key factors in determining such a tradeoff. Due to the unique physical-layer characteristics associated with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and cognitive radio (CR), the network performance is tightly coupled with mechanisms at the physical, link, network, and transport layers. In this paper, we consider an energy-efficient cross-layer optimization problem in multihop MIMO CR networks (CRNs) and provide a new formulation to balance the weighted network utility and the weighted power consumption of secondary users (SUs), with the minimum transmission rate constraint of primary users (PUs) and the SU power consumption constraint. However, this formulation is highly challenging due to the nonconvexity of the PU rate constraint. We propose a solution that features a linearization-based alternative optimization method and a heuristic primal recovery method. We further develop a distributed algorithm to jointly optimize the covariance matrix of the transmitted signal vector at each SU node, bandwidth allocation at each SU link, rate control at each session source, and multihop/multipath routing. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed distributed algorithm is very close to that of the centralized algorithm, and the proposed formulation provides an efficient way to save power consumption significantly, while achieving the network utility very close to that achieved with full power consumption. Being readily available in most of 802.11 radios, multirate capability appears to be useful as WiFi networks are getting more prevalent and crowded. More specifically, it would be helpful in high-density scenarios because internode distance is short enough to employ high data rates. However, communication at high data rates mandates a large number of hops for a given node pair in a multihop network and thus, can easily be depreciated as per-hop overhead at several layers of network protocol is aggregated over the increased number of hops. This paper presents a novel multihop, multirate adaptation mechanism, called multihop transmission opportunity (MTOP), that allows a frame to be forwarded a number of hops consecutively to minimize the MAC-layer overhead between hops. This seemingly collision-prone nonstop forwarding is proved to be safe via analysis and USRP/GNU Radio-based experiment in this paper. The idea of MTOP is in clear contrast to the conventional opportunistic transmission mechanism, known as TXOP, where a node transmits multiple frames back-to-back when it gets an opportunity in a single-hop WLAN. This paper develops a framework to study multi-hop relaying in a vehicular network consisting of vehicles and Road Side Units (RSUs), and the effect of this relaying on the network coverage and the communication delay. We use a stochastic geometry model that consists of a combination of Poisson Line Process (PLP) and 1D Poisson Point Process (PPP) to reliably characterize the vehicular network layout and the locations of the vehicles and the RSUs. Using this model, we analyze the effect of the different network parameters on the coverage provided by the RSUs to the vehicles. Then, we investigate how the uncovered vehicles can receive their intended packets by relaying them through multiple hops that form connected paths to the RSUs. We also analyze the delay introduced to packet delivery due to multi-hop relaying. Namely, we present results that illustrate the coverage gains achieved through multi-hop relaying and the delays induced. Such results could be used by network planners and operators to decide on the different configurations and operational parameters of the vehicular network to suit particular scenarios and objectives. D2D communications are considered as effective means to achieve vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, which can be used to improve the performance in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation and interference management based on clustering mechanism in the D2D communications under-laying VANETs aiming to optimize resource utilization efficiency. Firstly, given the transmission resources of intra-cluster for D2D communications, we design a vehicle clustering algorithm to improve intra-cluster resource efficiency and nullify the intra-cluster interference. Secondly, by analyzing the wireless service in VANETs, a cooperative communication scheme with optimized resource utilization is proposed to maximize intra-cluster spectral efficiency. Thirdly, when uplink spectrums are shared, an interference neutralization (IN) model is developed to manage inter-cluster interference, while each vehicle is equipped with one antenna and there is no extra antenna for interference cancellation. In accordance with the IN model, a cross-layer optimization frame for multi-hop VANETs is proposed to maximize the end-to-end throughput of multiple coexisting communication sessions. To evaluate the performance, we select the method without cooperative communication and IN as a benchmark and compare it against the method with cooperative communication only and the method with both cooperative communication and IN. The simulation results show that the method that uses cooperative communication and IN can dramatically increase the throughput. In this paper, we present a cooperative relaying strategy for half-duplex multihop relay networks. This scheme consists of three parts: 1) relay selection to yield a layered relay network; 2) group successive relaying that establishes a relay schedule to efficiently exploit half-duplex relays; and 3) a cooperative relaying scheme named short message noisy network coding with sliding-window decoding (SNNC-SW) that outperforms other state-of-the-art information theoretical schemes with lower decoding complexity and delay. We derive an achievable rate region of the proposed SNNC-SW scheme and attain a closed-form rate expression in the asymptotic case for several network models of interests. We then focus on the first part of our relaying strategy regarding efficient relay selection. We develop interference-harnessing routing that exploits the fact that in SNNC-SW, interference is treated as a useful signal. We show that, due to the efficient treatment of interference, this scheme can outperform routing schemes that deploy store-and-forward, a solution previously proposed for practical wireless multihop networks. Finally, we develop a low-complexity successive decoder of our scheme (implemented by a conventional MIMO decoder), which is a solution that can readily be implemented in practice. It is shown that also this practical scheme provides a significant gain over routing (based on store-and-forward) and the performance gap increases as the network becomes denser. Cooperation has become an essential element in spectrum sharing between the primary and secondary networks. A new trend in cooperation is to allow the primary and secondary networks to cooperate on the node level for data forwarding. This new paradigm allows to pool network resources from both the primary and secondary networks and allows users in each network to access a much richer network infrastructure in a combined network. This paper offers an in-depth study of such node-level cooperation by explaining its optimal throughput curve—the maximum achievable throughput for both the primary and secondary users. We formulate the problem as a multicriteria optimization problem with the goal of maximizing the throughput of both the primary and secondary users. Through a novel approach based on weighted Chebyshev norm, we transform the multicriteria optimization problem into a single criteria optimization problem and find a sequence of Pareto-optimal points iteratively. Based on the Pareto-optimal points, we construct the throughput curve and show that it provides an $\varepsilon $ -approximation to the optimal curve. We prove some important properties of the optimal throughput curve. Through a case study, we show that the throughput region (the area under the throughput curve) under node-level cooperation is substantially larger than that when there is no node-level cooperation. The multi-hop multi-flow transmission has been proposed as a promising solution to cope with the spectrum scarcity in densely populated user environments. Due to the mutual interference between different flows and different hops of the same flow, the resource allocation for multi-hop multi-flow wireless networks is in general non-convex, and thus cannot be solved by conventional convex optimization techniques. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to effectively solve the resource allocation problem by jointly optimizing the rate control and scheduling. Specifically, we show that the problem can be decomposed into a set of problems that maximizes the weight-sum-flow rate at each slot. Furthermore, to solve the non-convex weighted sum flow rate maximization problem, we exploit its hidden monotonicity and develop a global optimal rate control and scheduling (G-RCS) algorithm based on the theory of monotonic optimization. Our analysis shows that the proposed G-RCS algorithm is guaranteed to converge to an optimal solution in a finite number of iterations. To reduce the complexity, we propose an accelerated algorithm, referred to as the A-G-RCS, based on the inherent symmetry of the optimal solution. Future wireless networks are envisioned to integrate multi-hop multi-operator multi-technology ( \textm^3 ) components in order to meet the increasing traffic demand at an acceptable price for subscribers. The performance of such a network depends on the multitude of parameters defining traffic statistics, network topology/technology, channel characteristics, and business models for multi-operator cooperation. So far, most of these aspects have been separately addressed in the literature. Since the above parameters are mutually dependent and simultaneously present in a network, for a given channel and traffic statistics, a joint optimization of technology and business model parameters is required. In this paper, we present such joint models of complex wireless networks and introduce optimization with parameter clustering to solve the problem in a tractable way for large number of parameters. By parameter clustering, we compress the optimization vector and significantly simplify system implementation, and hence, the algorithm is referred to as the compressed control of wireless networks. Two distinct parameter compression techniques are introduced, namely, parameter absorption and parameter aggregation. Numerical results obtained in this way demonstrate clear maximum in the network utility as a function of the network topology parameters. The results, for a specific network with traffic offloading, show that the cooperation decisions between the multiple operators will be significantly influenced by the traffic dynamics. For typical example scenarios, the optimum offloading price varies by factor 3 for different traffic patterns, which justifies the use of dynamic strategies in the decision process. Previous works on multicast capacity mainly focus on deriving asymptotic order results in large-scale wireless networks. While they can explore the general scaling laws of throughput capacity, it is also of great interest for practical concern to predict the exact achievable throughput in networks with an arbitrary finite number of nodes. In this paper, we investigate the nonasymptotic throughput and delay of multihop wireless networks for multicast applications wherein for each source node, $k$ nodes are randomly selected as receivers. It is challenging for the exact performance analysis since multicast transmission has a dynamic nature due to the following factors: 1) random distribution of nodes; 2) bursty traffic arrivals; and 3) different timescales for transient analysis. To tackle the problem, we propose an explicit analytical model and develop a multicast routing scheme, which accounts for these aspects. With our proposed model, we derive lower bound (LB) and upper bound (UB) on nonasymptotic multicast throughput and delay using stochastic network calculus. We show that the performance results hold for all timescales and network sizes and are strongly correlated to data burstiness and the number of receivers. While we investigate from a nonasymptotic point of view, our results can also cover the asymptotic scaling laws. Simulations are conducted to further verify the accuracy of the analytical bounds. Cooperative communication (CC) for wireless networks has gained a lot of recent interests. It has been shown that CC has the potential to significantly increase the capacity of wireless networks, with its ability of mitigating fading by exploiting spatial diversity. However, most of the works on CC are limited to single radio wireless network. To demonstrate the benefits of CC in multiradio multihop wireless network, this paper studies a joint problem of multiradio cooperative routing and relay assignment to maximize the minimum rate among a set of concurrent communication sessions. We first model this problem as a mixed-integer programming (MIP) problem and prove it to be NP-hard. Then, we propose a centralized algorithm and a distributed algorithm to solve the problem. The centralized algorithm is designed within a branch-and-bound framework by using the relaxation of the formulated MIP, which can find a global (1+\varepsilon)-optimal solution. Our distributed algorithm includes two subalgorithms: a cooperative route selection subalgorithm and a fairness-aware route adjustment subalgorithm. Our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and the significant rate gains that can be achieved by incorporating CC in multiradio multihop networks. Interference alignment (IA) is a powerful technique to handle interference in wireless networks. Since its inception, IA has become a central research theme in the wireless communications community. Due to its intrinsic nature of being a physical layer technique, IA has been mainly studied for point-to-point or single-hop scenario. There is a lack of research of IA from a networking perspective in the context of multi-hop wireless networks. The goal of this paper is to make such an advance by bringing IA technique to multi-hop MIMO networks. We develop an IA model consisting of a set of constraints at a transmitter and a receiver that can be used to determine IA for a subset of interfering streams. We further prove the feasibility of this IA model by showing that a DoF vector can be supported free of interference at the physical layer as long as it satisfies the constraints in our IA model. Based on the proposed IA model, we develop an IA design space for a multi-hop MIMO network. To study how IA performs in a multi-hop MIMO network, we compare the performance of a network throughput optimization problem based on our developed IA design space against the same problem when IA is not employed. Constrained-energy underwater acoustic nodes are typically connected via a multi-hop underwater acoustic network (MHUAN) to cover a broad marine region. Recently, protocols for efficiently connecting such nodes have received considerable attention. In this paper, we show that the time reversal (TR) process plays an important role in the medium access control (MAC) because of its physical capability to exploit the multi-path energy from the richly scattering underwater environment, as well as to focus the signal energy in both spatial and temporal domains. In MHUANs, with severe multi-path propagation at the physical layer, the active TR process spatially focuses the signals to the location of the intended receiver; this significantly diminishes the interference among parallel links. We propose an active TR-based MAC (TRMAC) protocol for MHUANs, with the aim of minimizing collision and maximizing channel utilization simultaneously. Furthermore, by considering the impact of the cross correlation between different links on the TR-based medium access, we derive the threshold of the link cross correlation to resolve collision caused by the high cross correlation between realistic links. We perform simulations using the OPNET and BELLHOP environments, and show that the proposed TRMAC results in significantly improved throughput, decreased delay, and reduced data drop ratio in MHUANs. The capacity scaling laws of two overlaid networks are investigated, which are located in the same area sharing the same wireless resources with different priorities. The primary network can be regarded as an existing communication system operated in a licensed band and, therefore, is assumed to operate in an order-optimal fashion to achieve its standalone capacity scaling law. The secondary cognitive network must keep its interference to the primary network below a certain threshold while at the same time maximizing its own throughput scaling law based on cognition information. The existing scaling results for cognitive networks inherently assume multihop communication, which is a restricted coding model. By contrast, in this paper, a general coding model is considered without any specific physical layer coding assumptions. The capacity scaling exponents for both networks are analyzed when the numbers of primary nodes n , primary base stations l , which support the communication between primary nodes, and secondary nodes m increase with the relations , \beta >1 , and l=n^\gamma , 0\leq \gamma \leq 1 . For the extended network model, the capacity scaling exponents are completely characterized as \max \2-\alpha /2,1/2,\gamma \ and \max \2-\alpha /2,1/2\ for the primary and secondary networks respectively, where \alpha >2 denotes the path-loss exponent. That is, the capacity scaling laws for the primary and secondary networks are represented, respectively, by n^{\max \{2-\alpha /2,1/2,\gamma \}\pm \epsilon } and m^{\max \{2-\alpha /2,1/2\}\pm \epsilon }$ for \epsilon >0$ arbitrarily small. For the dense network model, when the primary network achieves its standalone capacity scaling exponent of 1, the secondary network is shown to achieve a scaling exponent of 1-{1}/({2\beta }) , which improves the previous scaling exponent of 1/2 achieved by multihop. The Opportunistic Large Array (OLA) is one type of cooperative transmission, which provides fast and reliable broadcasts and unicasts in multi-hop networks. While the existing literature on OLAs assumes one-shot transmission with a single packet, we analyze multi-packet OLA transmission within a single flow along strip-shaped networks or OLA-based cooperative routes. When multiple packets are transmitted from the same source using the same channel before the previous packet has cleared the network, which is called spatial pipelining, intra-flow interference is produced by OLAs transmitting co-channel packets. Using the continuum assumption (approximated by high density networks), the authors optimize the throughput. This paper theoretically shows spatial pipelining over strip networks is always feasible for path loss exponent α≥2, which is not true for disk-shaped networks. Moreover, the impacts of system parameters are analyzed, and the upper bound of the optimal packet spacing (the lower bound of the optimal throughput) is derived. Cellular third—generation wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) systems must meet interference constraints to maintain coverage when uplink traffic is scheduled. With the increasing demand for high-data mobile traffic and applications, Device-to-Device (D2D) communication has emerged as a promising technique for next generation of cellular networks to increase the network capacity. In this paper, to offload traffic from network backhaul, we investigate the problem of relaying data through multihop nodes, using D2D communication, for a set of transmitter-receiver pairs, by sharing cellular resource blocks. Furthermore, the problem is extended to schedule the transmission links within a maximum time frame to obey a delay constraint. If the transmission path could not be scheduled within the maximum time frame for any D2D communication pair, the communication is redirected through the base station similar to cellular mode. Our problem aims at minimizing the overall D2D transmission power by giving priority to maximizing the number of paths that go through D2D relaying. We mathematically formulate the above problem and find optimal solutions for small networks. We show the NP-hardness of the problem, and owing to its complexity, we propose an algorithmic method for more extensive networks. We investigate the achievable sum degrees of freedom (DoF) in a class of single-antenna multi-user multi-hop relay networks. The networks consist of multiple information sources and destinations, without direct signal propagation link between them, so that multiple layers of relays are deployed to assist in information delivery. We consider the situation that relays are unable to shield their receptions from the harmful self-interference and from the interference generated by other relays. Hence, ideal full-duplex relaying is not applicable. Utilizing half-duplex decode-and-forward relays, a cluster successive relaying (CSR) transmission scheme is adopted to conduct message transmission. The CSR scheme divides each layer of relays into two successively activated relay clusters to compensate the extra channel consumption demanded by the half-duplex operation. We propose two interference alignment strategies to deal with the interference issues. By properly clustering the relays in each layer, we find the asymptotically achievable sum DoF, subject to time-varying and frequency-selective fading, respectively. In a multihop wireless network, it is crucial but challenging to schedule transmissions in an efficient and fair manner. In this paper, a novel distributed node scheduling algorithm, called Local Voting, is proposed. This algorithm tries to semi-equalize the load (defined as the ratio of the queue length over the number of allocated slots) through slot reallocation based on local information exchange. The algorithm stems from the finding that the shortest delivery time or delay is obtained when the load is semi-equalized throughout the network. In addition, we prove that, with Local Voting, the network system converges asymptotically toward the optimal scheduling. Moreover, through extensive simulations, the performance of Local Voting is further investigated in comparison with several representative scheduling algorithms from the literature. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than the other distributed algorithms in terms of average delay, maximum delay, and fairness. A transmitter (TX) leakage canceller is proposed for improving the dynamic range of the receiver (RX) for wideband code division multiple access applications. A TX leakage canceller circuit in this paper is simple in implementation and has low noise figure (NF) contribution. It is a feed-forward canceller that samples a reference signal from the TX output and injects the amplitude-adjusted and phase-rotated signal to the RX chain. The canceller circuit is integrated with a low-noise amplifier and implemented in a 0.18-\mu\m CMOS technology. In this paper, we consider delay-constrained wireless multi-hop ad hoc networks where a packet should be delivered to the destination within the maximum allowed delay while satisfying the target outage probability. The proposed performance metric for analyzing networks is the delay-constrained random access transport capacity (D-RATC), which quantifies the maximum end-to-end (e2e) link achievable rate per unit area of a delay-constrained network using a random access protocol. The scaling of the D-RATC is obtained for various slotted ALOHA (SA) protocols and it is shown that the SA protocol is order-optimal for delay-constrained random networks when interference control is used with an additional feature such as rate control or admission control. If interference control is not used, the SA protocol suffers from the negatively infinite scaling exponent except the case of using rate control where a finite but suboptimal scaling exponent may be achieved. In this paper, we introduce a distributed dynamic routing algorithm in multi-hop cognitive radio (CR) networks, in which secondary users (SUs) want to minimize their interference to the primary users (PUs) while keeping the delay along the route low. We employ a cognitive pilot channel (CPC) for SUs to be able to access the information about PUs, including PUs' locations and channel conditions. Medial axis with a relaxation factor is used as a reference path for the routing, along which we develop a hierarchical structure for multiple sources to reach their destinations. We introduce a temporal and spatial dynamic non-cooperative game to model the interactions among the SUs as well as their influences on the PUs, and obtain by backward induction a set of mixed (behavioral) Nash equilibrium strategies. We also employ a multi-stage fictitious play learning algorithm for distributed routing, which minimizes the overall interference from the SUs to the PUs, as well as the average packet delay along the route from the SU nodes to their destinations.
