The article compares Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-R) Deviation Quotient and traditional Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Several authors recommended the use of factorially pure measures as substitutes for the WISC-R verbal and performance EQs. K.R. Sobotka and F.W. Black discussed averaging appropriate subtest scores to obtain verbal and performance factor scores. While the simplicity of this technique was appealing, it was not ideal because it failed to adjust for the intercorrelations between each of the subtests. To correct this problem, T.B. Gutkin recommended the computation of factorially pure deviation quotients based upon procedures presented by A. Tellegen and P.F Briggs.

Although development of the statistic is accomplished with applications to the WISC-R in mind, it is generalizable to any set of test scores derived for an individual.

This article details a study aimed to determine the stability of the most commonly applied factor solution, in clinical assessment, of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) for males and females. Whether alterations in traditional interpretations of the three-factor solution are necessary depending upon sex of the S also was investigated in this study.
