The X-ray free-electron lasers that became available during the last decade, like the European XFEL (EuXFEL), place high demands on their instrumentation. Especially at low photon energies below $1\,\text{keV}$, detectors with high sensitivity, and consequently low noise and high quantum efficiency, are required to enable facility users to fully exploit the scientific potential of the photon source. A 1-Megapixel pnCCD detector with a $1024\times 1024$ pixel format has been installed and commissioned for imaging applications at the Nano-Sized Quantum System (NQS) station of the Small Quantum System (SQS) instrument at EuXFEL. The instrument is currently operating in the energy range between $0.5$ and $3\,\text{keV}$ and the NQS station is designed for investigations of the interaction of intense FEL pulses with clusters, nano-particles and small bio-molecules, by combining photo-ion and photo-electron spectroscopy with coherent diffraction imaging techniques. The core of the imaging detector is a pn-type charge coupled device (pnCCD) with a pixel pitch of $75\,\mu\text{m}\times 75\,\mu\text{m}$. Depending on the experimental scenario, the pnCCD enables imaging of single photons thanks to its very low electronic noise of $3$e$^-$ and high quantum efficiency. Here we present an overview on the EuXFEL pnCCD detector and the results from the commissioning and first user operation at the SQS experiment in June 2019. The detailed descriptions of the detector design and capabilities, its implementation at EuXFEL both mechanically and from the controls side as well as important data correction steps aim to provide useful background for users planning and analyzing experiments at EuXFEL and may serve as a benchmark for comparing and planning future endstations at other FELs., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to the Journal of Synchrotron Radiation

The lattice parameters and unit-cell orientation of an SrLaAlO4crystal have been determined by means of energy-dispersive X-ray Laue diffraction (EDLD) using a pnCCD detector coupled to a columnar structure CsI(Tl) scintillator in the energy range between 40 and 130 keV. By exploiting the high quantum efficiency (QE) achieved by this combined detection system for hard X-rays, a large number of Bragg reflections could be recorded by the relatively small detector area, allowing accurate and fast determination of the lattice parameters and the moduli of the structure factors. The experiment was performed on the energy-dispersive diffraction (EDDI) beamline at the BESSY II synchrotron using a pnCCD detector with 128 × 128 pixels. Since the energies and positions of the Laue peaks can be recorded simultaneously by the pnCCD system, the tetragonal structure of the investigated specimen was determined without any prior information. The unit-cell parameters and the angles between the lattice vectors were evaluated with an accuracy of better than 0.7%, while the structure-factor moduli of the reflections were determined with a mean deviation of 2.5% relative to the theoretical values.

A so-called PNCCD, a special type of CCD, was developed twenty years ago as focal plane detector for the XMM-Newton X-ray astronomy mission of the European Space Agency ESA. Based on this detector concept and taking into account the experience of almost ten years of operation in space, a new X-ray CCD type was designed by the ‘MPI semiconductor laboratory’ for an upcoming X-ray space telescope, called eROSITA ( e xtended Ro entgen s urvey with an i maging t elescope a rray). This space telescope will be equipped with seven X-ray mirror systems of Wolter-I type and seven CCD cameras, placed in their foci. The instrumentation permits the exploration of the X-ray universe in the energy band from 0.3 up to 10 keV by spectroscopic measurements with a time resolution of 50 ms for a full image comprising 384×384 pixels. Main scientific goals are an all-sky survey and investigation of the mysterious ‘Dark Energy’. The eROSITA space telescope, which is developed under the responsibility of the ‘Max-Planck-Institute for extraterrestrial physics’, is a scientific payload on the new Russian satellite ‘Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma’ (SRG). The mission is already approved by the responsible Russian and German space agencies. After launch in 2012 the destination of the satellite is Lagrange point L2. The planned observational program takes about seven years. We describe the design of the eROSITA camera system and present important test results achieved recently with the eROSITA prototype PNCCD detector. This includes a comparison of the eROSITA detector with the XMM-Newton detector.

In the MPI-Halbleiterlabor (MPI-HLL) we are developing fully depleted pn-type Charge Coupled Devices (pnCCD) with a thick radiation-sensitive region. Since 1997, the mesh experiment has been established as an unique technique to determine an X-ray interaction position with subpixel resolution. In order to investigate the signal charge behavior in pnCCDs, we performed the mesh experiment using various characteristic X-ray lines. Cu-L (0.9 keV), Al-K (1.5 keV) and Ti-K (4.5 keV) were used and the device operated under various conditions, e.g. register voltages. We obtained the restored pixel images for various X-ray event patterns. The photon entrance window of the back illuminated pnCCD shows highly uniform detection efficiency within a pixel. We measured the charge cloud size generated by an X-ray photon inside the CCD. The measured charge cloud sizes are around 6 μm (rms) depending on the X-ray energy. The operation with different register conditions revealed asymmetries and regions with a weaker electric field around pixel boundaries.

A special type of charge-coupled device, the pnCCD, has been developed in the nineties as focal-plane detector for the X-ray astronomy mission XMM-Newton of the European Space Agency. The pnCCD detector has been in operation since the satellite launch in 1999. It is performing up to date spectroscopy of X-rays in combination with imaging and high time resolution. The excellent performance of the flight camera is still maintained; in particular, the energy resolution has been nearly constant since launch. In order to satisfy the requirements of future X-ray astronomy missions as well as those of ground-based experiments, a new type of pnCCD has been developed. The ‘frame store pnCCD’ shows various optimizations in device design and fabrication process. Devices with up to 256×512 pixels have been fabricated in 2004 and recently tested. Simultaneously, a programmable analog signal processor for the readout of the CCD signals, the DUO CAMEX, has been developed. The readout noise of the new detector has a value of 2 electrons ENC which is less than half of the figure of the XMM-Newton pnCCD. We measured an energy resolution that is close to the theoretical limit given by the Fano noise. In particular the low-energy response of the new devices was substantially improved. The quantum efficiency for X-rays is at least 90% in the entire energy band from 0.3 keV up to 11 keV. This is due to the ultra-thin photon entrance window as well as the full depletion of the 450 μm thick back-illuminated pnCCD. The position resolution is better than the pixel sizes of 75 μm×75 μm or 51 μm×51 μm because the signal charge is spread over up to four pixels which allows a more accurate event position determination. ‘Out of time’ events are substantially reduced to the order of 0.1% by operating the pnCCD in frame store mode. Higher operating temperatures, e.g. −20 °C, are possible due to the smaller thermally generated dark-current level of the new devices and the operation at higher frame rates. Low power consumption applications like for the ROSITA X-ray astronomy mission with low frame rates of, e.g. 20 images/s, as well as high frame rate applications, e.g. 200 images/s, are possible with the same device.

A pnCCD is a special type of charge-coupled device developed for spectroscopy and imaging of X-rays with high time resolution and quantum efficiency. Its most famous application is the operation on the XMM-Newton satellite, an X-ray astronomy mission that was launched by the European space agency in 1999. The excellent performance of the focal plane camera has been maintained for more than 6 years in orbit. The energy resolution in particular has shown hardly any degradation since launch. In order to satisfy the requirements of future X-ray astronomy missions as well as those of ground-based experiments, a new type of pnCCD has been developed. This ‘frame-store pnCCD’ shows an enhanced performance compared to the XMM-Newton type of pnCCD. Now, more options in device design and operation are available to tailor the detector to its respective application. Part of this concept is a programmable analog signal processor, which has been developed for the readout of the CCD signals. The electronic noise of the new detector has a value of only 2 electrons equivalent noise charge (ENC), which is less than half of the figure achieved for the XMM-Newton-type pnCCD. The energy resolution for the Mn-K α line at 5.9 keV is approximately 130 eV FWHM. We have close to 100% quantum efficiency for both low- and high-energy photon detection (e.g. the C-K line at 277 eV, and the Ge-K α line at 10 keV, respectively). Very high frame rates of 1000 images/s have been achieved due to the ultra-fast readout accomplished by the parallel architecture of the pnCCD and the analog signal processor. Excellent spectroscopic performance is shown even at the relatively high operating temperature of −25 °C that can be achieved by a Peltier cooler. The applications of the low-noise and fast pnCCD detector are not limited to the detection of X-rays. With an anti-reflective coating deposited on the photon entrance window, we achieve high quantum efficiency also for near-infrared and optical photons. A novel type of pnCCD is in preparation, which allows single optical photon counting. This feature is accomplished by implementation of an avalanche-type amplifier in the pnCCD concept.

XMM-Newton—a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency's Horizon 2000 programme—was launched on December 10, 1999 into orbit. Since March 2000 more than 2000 scientific observations were made. An example will be shown. The X-ray pnCCD camera on EPIC is operating since then without severe problems. We will report about the system performance as a function of time, with special emphasis on the effect of radiation damage in orbit. Up to now the spectroscopic and imaging performance of the pnCCD camera system is stable with time, even at the lowest energies most sensitive to degradation. The deviations of the detector response compared to the prelaunch performance over the 3.5 years is below 0.5%. One year after launch, the pnCCD X-ray camera was hit by a micrometeoroid, damaging 35 pixels spread over the entire field of view. Details of the impact of the pnCCD with a cosmic dust particle will be given. X-ray fluorescence photons, stimulated by charged particles, constitute a significant part of the instrument background. Possible improvements for future missions will be discussed.

The PN-CCD camera on the XMM-Newton X-ray astronomy satellite is the most advanced X-ray spectrometer combining high quantum efficiency, high-speed readout and excellent energy resolution. According to the fullframe concept, the whole 6×6 cm 2 large CCD-chip area is used as image area, i.e. is sensitive and exposed to X-rays. The camera operates since January 2000 successfully in space without performance degradation. Based on the concept and technology development of the XMM-Newton PN-CCD, the ‘frame store PN-CCD’, a further development of the detector has been proposed. For the new detector a frame store area is added, adjacent to the image area, to allow in parallel photon exposure in the image area and signal readout of the previous image in the frame store area. The concept and the new features of the device will be described here. This comprises in particular a reduced probability of out-of-time event occurrence, the optimization of electronic noise and charge transfer losses as well as a method to obtain a cleaner low-energy response. The first measurements with the new frame store PN-CCD are presented with focus on the above addressed detector parameters. It is planned to apply the device as focal plane instrument for the ROSITA mission that has the aim to extend the ROSAT all-sky survey towards higher energies.

Development of high quantum efficiency photon detectors is needed for many low light level (LLL) applications. Recently a new type of photodetector was introduced, the so-called Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM). Its good characteristics (fast response, high gain and single photon resolution capability) make SiPM suitable for many applications. Yet its quantum efficiency is still not satisfactory ( 40 % ) for LLL applications. A new detector concept is presented that promises very high ( > 80 % ) quantum efficiency in a wide wavelength range (300–1000 nm). Combining the drift diode with an avalanche structure placed on the opposite side of the large-area radiation entrance window on the fully depleted bulk, one obtains a large-area device that focuses the photoelectron onto a small “point-like” avalanche region. Engineering of the shallow radiation entrance window provides high quantum efficiency in the desired wavelength range. Such a device can be used as a building block for a “silicon photomultiplier”. Extensive simulations have demonstrated the validity of this concept. A production of test devices for the optimization and characterization of avalanche regions and technology parameters has been carried out. The first results from this “proof of principle” production are presented.

New cylindrical silicon drift detectors have been designed, fabricated and tested. They comprise an integrated on-chip amplifier system with continuous reset, on-chip voltage divider, electron accumulation layer stabilizer, large area, homogeneous radiation entrance window and a drain for surface generated leakage current. The test of the 3.5 mm2 large individual devices, which have also been grouped together to form a sensitive area up to 21 mm2 have shown the following spectroscopic results: at room temperature (300 K) the devices have shown a full width at half maximum at the MnKα line of a radioactive 55 Fe source of 225 eV with shaping times of 250 to 500 ns. At −20°C the resolution improves to 152 eV at 2 μs Gaussian shaping. At temperatures below 200 K the energy resolution is below 140 eV. With the implementation of a digital filtering system the resolution approaches 130 eV. The system was operated with count rates up to 800 000 counts per second and per readout node, still conserving the spectroscopic qualities of the detector system.

Fourth generation accelerator-based light sources, such as VUV and X-ray Free Electron Lasers (FEL), deliver ultra-brilliant (∼1012–1013 photons per bunch) coherent radiation in femtosecond (∼10–100 fs) pulses and, thus, require novel focal plane instrumentation in order to fully exploit their unique capabilities. As an additional challenge for detection devices, existing (FLASH, Hamburg) and future FELs (LCLS, Menlo Park; SCSS, Hyogo and the European XFEL, Hamburg) cover a broad range of photon energies from the EUV to the X-ray regime with significantly different bandwidths and pulse structures reaching up to MHz micro-bunch repetition rates. Moreover, hundreds up to trillions of fragment particles, ions, electrons or scattered photons can emerge when a single light flash impinges on matter with intensities up to 1022 W/cm2. In order to meet these challenges, the Max Planck Advanced Study Group (ASG) within the Center for Free Electron Laser Science (CFEL) has designed the CFEL-ASG MultiPurpose (CAMP) chamber. It is equipped with specially developed photon and charged particle detection devices dedicated to cover large solid-angles. A variety of different targets are supported, such as atomic, (aligned) molecular and cluster jets, particle injectors for bio-samples or fixed target arrangements. CAMP houses 4π solid-angle ion and electron momentum imaging spectrometers (“reaction microscope”, REMI, or “velocity map imaging”, VMI) in a unique combination with novel, large-area, broadband (50 eV–25 keV), high-dynamic-range, single-photon-counting and imaging X-ray detectors based on the pnCCDs. This instrumentation allows a new class of coherent diffraction experiments in which both electron and ion emission from the target may be simultaneously monitored. This permits the investigation of dynamic processes in this new regime of ultra-intense, high-energy radiation—matter interaction. After an introduction into the salient features of the CAMP chamber and the properties of the redesigned REMI/VMI spectrometers, the new 1024×1024 pixel format pnCCD imaging detector system will be described in detail. Results of tests of four smaller format (256×512) devices of identical performance, conducted at FLASH and BESSY, will be presented and the concept as well as the anticipated properties of the full, large-scale system will be elucidated. The data obtained at both radiation sources illustrate the unprecedented performance of the X-ray detectors, which have a voxel size of 75×75×450 μm3 and a typical read-out noise of 2.5 electrons (rms) at an operating temperature of −50 °C.

The German X-ray instrument eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the main instrument of the new Spectrum-RG mission orbiting at L2. The launch of the Russian satellite is planned for the year 2012. The scientific goal of eROSITA is primarily an all sky survey with detection and analysis of 100 thousand clusters of galaxies in order to study the large scale structures in the Universe and to test cosmological models. The therefore required large effective area is obtained by an array of seven identical and parallel aligned Wolter-I telescopes. The focal plane instrumentation is realized with a 384 × 384 pixel frame store pnCCD mounted on a ceramic PCB and cooled to -80 C. The ceramic PCB also houses three CAMEX readout ASICs to amplify and filter each of the 384 channels in parallel. The cooled ceramic is connected via a flex lead to the electronics box at room temperature. A copper housing shields for proton radiation whereas a graded-Z shield attenuates X-ray fluorescence.

A detector that looks promising for advanced imaging modalities—such as X-ray absorption contrast imaging, X-ray fluorescence imaging, and diffraction-enhanced imaging—is the controlled-drift detector (CDD). The CDD is a novel two-dimensional X-ray imager with energy resolving capability of spectroscopic quality. It is built on a fully depleted silicon wafer and features fast readout while being operated at or near room temperature. The use of CDDs in the aforementioned applications allows translating these techniques from synchrotron-based experiments to laboratory-size experiments using polychromatic X-ray generators. We have built a dedicated and versatile detection module based on a 36 mm2 CDD chip featuring pixels of 180 × 180 μm2, and we evaluated the system performance in different X-ray imaging applications both with synchrotron-based experiments and in the laboratory environment.

© 2015 Author(s). Lensless x-ray microscopy requires the recovery of the phase of the radiation scattered from a specimen. Here, we demonstrate a de novo phase retrieval technique by encapsulating an object in a superfluid helium nanodroplet, which provides both a physical support and an approximate scattering phase for the iterative image reconstruction. The technique is robust, fast-converging, and yields the complex density of the immersed object. Images of xenon clusters embedded in superfluid helium droplets reveal transient configurations of quantum vortices in this fragile system.

Fully depleted silicon pn-CCDs with an active thickness of 300 micrometers exhibit a quantum efficiency of 90 percent at a wavelength of 1 micrometers in the near IR. The multi-parallel readout architecture allows for a frame time shorter than 2 ms for a device having a format of 256 by 256 pixel. It can be operated in a full frame mode and in a frame store mode. The pixel size is 50 micrometers by 50 micrometers . The active area is then 12.8 by 12.8 mm2. Cooled down to -90 degrees C the electronic noise floor is below 5 electrons at 50 Megapixel per second. Quantum efficiency measurements will be shown as well as the physical models of the radiation entrance window. A camera system with comparable specifications - except for the pixel size - was already fabricated for ESA's XMM-NEWTON satellite mission, which was launched in early December 1999. The active size of the detector is 60 by 60 mm2 with a readout time of 4 ms. Future work includes the extension of the active area to 1000 by 1000 pixel, monolithically fabricated on a high resistivity 6 inch silicon wafer. The main driver for this development is ESA's planned XEUS mission, to be launched at the end of the next decade.

Pixelated semiconductor detectors for X-ray imaging spectroscopy are foreseen as key components of the payload of various future space missions exploring the x-ray sky. Located on the platform of the new Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma satellite, the eROSITA (extended Roentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) instrument will perform an imaging all-sky survey up to an X-ray energy of 10 keV with unprecedented spectral and angular resolution. The instrument will consist of seven parallel oriented mirror modules each having its own pnCCD camera in the focus. The satellite born X-ray observatory SIMBOL-X will be the first mission to use formation-flying techniques to implement an X-ray telescope with an unprecedented focal length of around 20 m. The detector instrumentation consists of separate high- and low energy detectors, a monolithic 128 × 128 DEPFET macropixel array and a pixellated CdZTe detector respectively, making energy band between 0.5 to 80 keV accessible. A similar concept is proposed for the next generation X-ray observatory IXO. Finally, the MIXS (Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer) instrument on the European Mercury exploration mission BepiColombo will use DEPFET macropixel arrays together with a small X-ray telescope to perform a spatially resolved planetary XRF analysis of Mercury's crust. Here, the mission concepts and their scientific targets are briefly discussed, and the resulting requirements on the detector devices together with the implementation strategies are shown.
