The calculus of design is a diagrammatic approach towards the relationship between design and insight. The thesis I am evolving is that insights are not discovered, gained, explored, revealed, or mined, but are operatively de—signed. The de in design neglects the contingency of the space towards the sign. The — is the drawing of a distinction within the operation. Space collapses through the negativity of the sign; the command draws a distinction that neglects the space for the form's sake. The operation to de—sign is counterintuitively not the creation of signs, but their removal, the exclusion of possible sign propositions of space. De—sign is thus an act of exclusion; the possibilities of space are crossed into form.

Computer games are diverse: recreational fun, professional sport, culture building, and culture critical. They inspire art, and art is made with them. This article examines the discourses and strategies of computer game art. Drawing on research from game studies and media studies, it examines the distinction between artgames and game art (especially modifications) and attempts to show that both genres originate from different discourses that operate with different concepts and artistic strategies: Artgames focus on playability and rhetoric, whereas game art focuses on unplayability and aesthetics. They distinguish themselves in different ways from the care structures of commercial computer games.

Simultaneously speculative and inspired by everyday experiences, this volume develops an aesthetics of metabolism that offers a new perspective on the human-environment relation, one that is processual, relational, and not dependent on conscious thought. In art installations, design prototypes, and research-creation projects that utilize air, light, or temperature to impact subjective experience the author finds aesthetic milieus that shift our awareness to the role of different sense modalities in aesthetic experience. Metabolic and atmospheric processes allow for an aesthetics besides and beyond the usually dominant visual sense.

One of the most difficult tasks today is trying to grasp the presence of computing. The almost ubiquitous and diverse forms of networked computers (in all their stationary, mobile, embedded, and autonomous modes) create a nearly overwhelming complexity. To speak of what is here evading and present at the same time, the paper proposes to reconsider the concept of interface, its historical roots, and its heuristic advantages for an analysis and critique of the current and especially everyday spread of computerization. The question of interfaces leads to isolable conditions and processes of conduction, as well as to the complexity of the cooperation formed by them. It opens both an investigative horizon and a mode of analysis, which always asks for further interface levels involved in the phenomenon I am currently investigating. As an example, the paper turns to the displacement of the file with the launch of the iPhone in 2007 and its comeback in 2017 with the "Files" apps. Both developments are profoundly related to the establishment of computers as permanently networked machines, whereby their functionality, depresentations, and ideology come into focus.

In this cartography, I examine M.K. Gandhi’s practice of fasting for political purposes from a specifically aesthetic perspective. In other words, to foreground their dramatic qualities, how they in their expressive repetition, patterning and stylization produced a/effected heightened forms of emotions. To carry out this task, I follow the theater scholar Erika Fischer-Lichte’s features that give name to her book Äesthetik des Performativen (2004). The cartography is framed in a philosophical presentation of Gandhi’s discourse as well as of his historical sources. Moreover, as a second frame, I historicize the fasts, by means of a typology and teleology in context. The historically and discoursively framed cartography maps four main dimensions that define the aesthetics of the performative: mediality, materiality, semioticity and aestheticity. The first part analyses the medial platforms in which the fasts as events have been historically recorded and in which they have left their traces and inscriptions. These historical sources are namely, newspapers, images, newsreels and a documentary film. Secondly, the material dimension depicts Gandhi’s corporeal condition, as well as the spatiality and temporality of the fasts. In the third place, I revise and reformulate critically Fischer-Lichte’s concepts of “presence” and “representation” with resonating concepts of G. C. Spivak and J. Rancière. This revision illustrates Gandhi’s fasts and shows the process of how an individual may become the embodiment or representation of a national body-politic. The last chapter of the cartography explores the autopoetic-feedback loop between Gandhi and the people and finishes with a comparison of the mise en scène of the hunger artists with the fasts of the Indian the politician, social reformer, and theologian. The text concludes interpreting Gandhi’s practice of fasting under the light of the concepts of “intellectual emancipation” and “de-subjectivation” of the philosopher J. Rancière. The four main concerns of this cartography are: Firstly, in the field of Gandhi’s reception, to explore the aesthetic dimension as both alternative and complementary to the two hegemonic interpretative lenses, i.e. a hagiographic or a secular political understanding of the fasts. From a theoretical perspective, the cartography pursues to be a transdisciplinary experiment that aims at deploying concepts that have been traditionally developed, derived from and used in the field of the arts (theater, film, literature, aesthetic performance, etc.) in the field of the political. In brief, inverting an expression of Rancière, to understand politics as aesthetics. Thirdly, from a thematic point of view, the cartography inquires the historical forms of staging and perception of hunger. Last yet importantly, it is an inquiry of the practice of fasting as nonviolence, what Gandhi, its most sophisticated modern theoretician and practitioner considered its most radical expression.

When considering artists from the second half of the twentieth century who used steel as material for their sculptures, Eduardo Chillida and Richard Serra are among the first to come to mind. Both artists are prominent in public spaces and both present large-size sculptures which challenge viewers. Both use clear geometrical patterns, and both develop their oeuvre from an intense involvement with the properties and possibilities of the material. However, their sculptures show fundamentally diverging conceptions not only in the manner of their creation, but also in their reception. Chillida and Serra have almost nothing in common; they never made reference to each other, although their sculptures often stand in neighbourly proximity. Nevertheless a comparison or more precisely a synopsis can illustrate a number of problems that rise in dealing with sculpture today. Serra’s works convince mostly when they concentrate on complex formal qualities resulting from constellations of geometrical forms and given spaces. However, sculptures in public space consistently have the difficult task of creating memorial places which ideally speak for themselves. Chillida’s sculptures fulfil this purpose because of their expressive pictorial potential. The material COR-TEN steel provides them with power and emphasis.

In the historical centre of the medieval city of Capua, the three churches of S. Salvatore "Maggiore" a Corte, S. Giovanni a Corte and S. Michele a Corte are a group of sacred buildings which reveal a link with the Longobard court of the city, not only because of their common nomenclature, but also because of their spatial disposition in the urban structure. In the present book, the preserved building fabric is subjected to a fundamental analysis in order to work out which components can be assigned to the oldest construction phases and thus can be addressed as being of Longobard origin. A detailed examination of the associated architectural sculpture equally complements this first part. The contextualisation of the results will help to generate a picture of the arts and architecture of the 10th century, which in Southern Italy shows a certain scarcity in preserved monuments, and allows conclusions to be drawn about the spiritual background against which the three court churches were built.

The dissertation interrogates the visualization of fashion’s haptic qualities within display processes at contemporary exhibitions that showcase fashion’s material qualities, traces of touch, as well as movement. These considerations take place against the backdrop of the museum as a place where, starting in the early nineteenth century, touching is not allowed and knowledge has to be acquired visually.

Can Fashion Be Queer? The combination of clothing, accessories and styles has long since become standard in fashion, along with unisex as a trend of urban fashion design. Can the concept of queerness then be applied to fashion in any way? If it is possible to use objects and styles to constantly shift and re-constitute meaning in a fashion context, do such acts then also have the potential to make codes such as gender ambiguous and to set them in motion? This volume presents systematic reflections and exemplary analyses on the relationship between queerness and fashion in a German-language context for the first time, in the process, opening up fashion, gender and queer studies to new perspectives.

The thesis assumes that literature and painting provide similar potential for the reflection of memory to their audience, although they utilise different tools and strategies as appropriate for their modes of expression. Even if the strategies to create a potential for the reflection of memory are clearly dependent on the relevant discipline, the aspects reflected can be similar. It is the goal of this thesis to show that such overlap can be found in theory and practice. Literature and fine arts (here: painting) will be presented as two of numerous media of remembrance and their functions within a collective memory will be analysed. The thesis will focus on the function of the collective memory's reflection as a potential of the text which can stimulate a reaction in the process of reception. Different strategies for reflection of memory will be identified and analysed in three case studies. The thesis summaries several narratological concepts based on the cultural memory studies by Jan and Aleida Assman, including those of Astrid Erll and Birgit Neumann. The distinction between memory formation and reflection of memory is clarified. Astrid Erll's model of a “Rhetoric of the collective memory” is analysed in more detail, according to which potential for the reflection of memory can be described on three text levels: plot, structure and language. The case studies then apply an analysis based on the distinction between the three levels to two contemporary German examples of literature dealing with memory. Both texts, Grass's Im Krebsgang (English title: Crabwalk) and Timm's Halbschatten use a number of strategies for the reflection of memory, although the emphasis differs between the texts. The same methodology is applied to Gerhard Richter's painting cycle 18. Oktober 1977 (English title: October 18, 1977).

Classifications of computer games is concerned with the terms that are used to label computer games for classificatory purposes. A representative selection of such classification models, that covers the works of designers, journalists, pedagogues, laymen and explicit computer game researchers, are introduced and assessed with regard to their ability to classify specific games unambiguously. Two essentially different approaches to this problem are identified: “categorizations” establish rigid categories to which single games are to be assigned unambiguously, while “typologies” examine and classify single elements of games and not games as a whole. Both methods are analysed and their advantages and disadvantages are shown. As it becomes obvious that classifying computer games is highly dependent on the respective basic understanding of what a computer game is, the study of the classification models is preceded by an overview which discusses four chosen aspects as examples of this problematic definition.

ComputingMilieux_PERSONALCOMPUTING ,ddc:700 ,Institut für Künste und Medien - Abstract
Computer games may be defined as artifacts that connect the input devices of a computer (such as keyboard, mouse or controller) with its output devices (in most cases a screen and speakers) in such a way that on the screen a challenge is displayed. On the screen we see pictorial elements that have to be manipulated to master a game, that is to win a competition, to solve a riddle or to adopt a skill. Therefore the characteristics of the representational function of computer games have to be contrasted phenomenologically with conventional games on the one hand and cinematic depictions on the other. It shows that computer games separate the player from the playing field, and translate bodily felt concrete actions into situational abstract cinematic depictions. These features add up to the situational abstract presentation of self-action experience. In this framework computer games reveal a potential as a new means of shared cognition that might unfold in the 21st century and change the beingin- the-world in a similar way as cinematic depiction did in the 20th century

The fourth volume of the DIGAREC Series holds the proceedings to the conference “Logic and Structure of the Computer Game”, held at the House of Brandenburg- Prussian History in Potsdam on November 6 and 7, 2009. The conference was the first to explicitly address the medial logic and structure of the computer game. The contributions focus on the specific potential for mediation and on the unique form of mediation inherent in digital games. This includes existent, yet scattered approaches to develop a unique curriculum of game studies. In line with the concept of ‘mediality’, the notions of aesthetics, interactivity, software architecture, interface design, iconicity, spatiality, and rules are of special interest. Presentations were given by invited German scholars and were commented on by international respondents in a dialogical structure.

The book deals with the different types of enmity in computer games that shape the interactivity of that novel medium. A typology consisting of three equal parts is generated that allows classify every computer game that can be thought of. First, there is "competition" which is characterized by equality of chances and a movement that is aimed at one single goal. Second, „hostility“ makes the players pursue different, often contrary goals while the will to kill each other influences their actions. Third and last „environment“ is a type of enmity where the players do not fight living enemies, but obstacles of the game world. As a work that derives from a Media Science point of view, the way violence is implemented plays a key role in the dealing with the topic. This leads to the attempt of systemizing the interactivity of computer games via agonal elements of the game play. In competitions violence is domesticated while it is celebrated in hostile games and channeled in games where the player fights against the game world. However, this work is not meant to choose an pedagogical, but an analytical focus. Furthermore, criterias are developed that allow to identify the different types of enmity. A simple matrix is deduced that explains the relationship of the three types while a final outlook indicates the practical implementation of this whole conceptualization.

ComputingMilieux_PERSONALCOMPUTING ,ddc:700 ,Institut für Künste und Medien - Abstract
Communication, simulation, interactive narrative and ubiquitous computing are widely accepted as perspectives in humancomputer interaction. This paper proposes play as another possible perspective. Everyday uses of the computer increasingly show signs of similarity to play. This is not discussed with regard to the so-called media society, the playful society, the growing cultural acceptance of the computer, the spread of computer games or a new version of Windows, but in view of the playful character of interaction with the computer that has always been part of it. The exploratory learning process involved with new software and the creative tasks that are often undertaken when using the computer may support this argument. Together with its high level of interactivity, these observations point to a sense of security, autonomy and freedom of the user that produce play and are, in turn, produced by play. This notion of play refers not to the playing of computer games, but to an implicit, abstract (or symbolic) process based on a certain attitude, the play spirit. This attitude is discussed regarding everyday computer use and related to the other mentioned perspectives.

ComputingMilieux_PERSONALCOMPUTING ,ddc:700 ,Institut für Künste und Medien - Abstract
Computer games are rigid in a peculiar way: the logic of computation was the first to shape the early games. The logic of interactivity marked the action genre of games in the second place, while in massive multiplayer online gaming all the emergences of the net occur to confront us with just another type of logic. These logics are the media in which the specific forms of computer games evolve. Therefore, a look at gaming supposing that there are three eras of computation is taken: the early synthetical era, ruled by the Turing machine and by mainframe computers, by the IPO principle of computing; the second, mimetical era, when interactivity and graphical user interfaces dominate, the domain of the feedback loop; and the third, emergent era, in which the complexity of networked personal computers and their users is dominant.

In recent years computer games have been discussed by a variety of disciplines from various perspectives. A fundamental difference with other media, which is a point of continuous consideration, is the specific relationship between the viewer and the image, the player and the game apparatus, which is a characteristic of video games as a dispositive. Terms such as immersion, participation, interactivity, or ergodic are an indication of the deep interest in this constellation. This paper explores the resonance between body and image in video games like REZ, SOUL CALIBUR and DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION from the perspective of a temporal ontology of the image, taking particular account of the structuring power of the interface and its subject positioning aspects.

Game space can be conceived of as being structured by varying levels of ruledness, i.e. it oscillates between openness and closure, between playability and gameness. The movement through game space can then be described as a vector defined by possibility spaces, which are generated organically out of the interplay between ruled and unruled space. But we can only define rules ex negativo, therefore the possibility of breaking the rules is always already inscribed in this vector of movement. This can be conceptualized as a boundary operation that takes the difference between ‘ordinary life’ and ‘play’ as its argument, and which thus generates the difference between ‘play’ and ‘game’.

This paper is a critical examination of the relationship between reality and simulation. After a brief theoretical introduction, it unfolds its argument on an empirical level, using a thick game playing description of GRAND THEFT AUTO IV. This in-game experience serves as material for the subsequent analysis, in the course of which defining characteristics of computer game playing are formulated. Finally, on the basis of this analysis, the paper postulates the hypothesis that playing computer games like GTA IV promotes competency in deconstructing simulations and implements a cyclic logic of recreation.

ComputingMilieux_PERSONALCOMPUTING ,ddc:700 ,Institut für Künste und Medien - Abstract
The debate whether to locate the narrative of digital games a) as part of the code or b) as part of the performance will be the starting point for an analysis of two roleplaying games: the single-player game ZELDA: MAJORA’S MASK and the Korean MMORPG AION and their respective narrative logics. When we understand games as abstract code systems, then the narrative logic can be understood as embedded on the code level. With a focus on the player’s performance, the actualization of the possibilities given in the code system is central. Both logics, that of code and that of performance, are reflected in players’ narratives based on the playing experience. They do reflect on the underlying code and rules of the game system as they do reflect on the game world and their own performance within. These narratives rely heavily on the source text – the digital game –, which means that they give insights into the underlying logics of the source text. I will discuss the game structure, the players’ performance while playing the game and the performance of the player after playing the game producing fan narratives. I conceive the narrative structure and the performance of the player playing as necessarily interconnected when we discuss the narrative logics of a game. Producing fan narratives is understood as a performance as well. This performance is based on the experience the players made while playing and refers to both logics of the game they use as their source text.

This paper comprises four parts. Firstly, an overview of the mathematics of decision logic in relation to games and of the construction of narration and characters is given. This includes specific limits of the use of decision logic pertaining to games in general and to storytelling in particular. Secondly, the rule system as the medial unconsciousness is focused on. Thirdly, remarks are made on the debate between ludology and narratology, which had to fail as it missed the crucial point: the computer game as a medium. Finally, gaming in general, as well as its relationship to chance, coincidence, emergence, and event is discussed.

Normality is one of the defining categories of our society. Statistics of all kinds play a crucial part in establishing the normal. Computers, on the other hand, have a very close connection to statistics as the digital world is a statistical one in itself. In a multitude of games statistics are used as an element of gameplay. In this perspective, games can be regarded as a training in self-normalization. However, it is still questionable whether this leads to a genuine production of normality.

The claim is made, that in order to analyze them sufficiently, computer games first of all have to be described according to their mediality, understood as the very form in which possible contents are presented to be interacted with. This calls for a categorical approach that defines the condition of possible actions that are determined by the program, but that can only be perceived as aesthetic features.

The significance of movement in computer games has always been emphasized by many views. This is not at all surprising when one considers the verbs describing the actions that occur in classic games: “Running”, “Shooting” and “Catching” are just a taste of the wide array of playing possibilities, all taking place on a level of kinetics. However these are not just words describing movement but rather create significant relations between the elements in the game. In most classic games it is exactly these kinetic correlations that bring together the single elements to create a diegetic space, thereby rendering the game possible. All the more remarkable is the lack of attention this level of design has received from any analytical standpoint. This document should provide an introduction to the possibilities of observing video games from a kinetics point of view, and bring to light what kind of potential lies in a dedicated analysis of this much neglected level of design as well as its utilization in the creative process.

Governments all over the world have responded to the offer of violent and sexual-themed video games by inaugurating regulatory bodies. Still, video games with content that is deemed unsuitable for children are played even by young children. With a focus on the situation in Germany the aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, the current state of literature on the importance of age ratings for the regulation of video games is scrutinized. Therefore, the focus is on the German rating system by the Entertainment Software Self Control. This scheme is compared in particular to the American Entertainment Software Rating Board scheme and parallels with the Pan-European Game Information-system are drawn. On the other hand, results from an exploratory survey study on the preferences for video games among German 8 to 12 year olds are presented (N=1703), arguing that the preference for video games that are not suitable for them is a widespread phenomenon in particular among boys.

This paper draws on Bernard Stiegler’s critique of “hyperindustrialism” to suggest that digital gaming is a privileged site for critiques of affective labor; games themselves routinely nod towards such critiques. Stiegler’s work adds, however, the important dimension of historical differentiation to recent critiques of affective labor, emphasizing “style” and “idiom” as key concerns in critical analyses of globalizing technocultures. These insights are applied to situate digital play in terms of affective labor, and conclude with a summary analysis of the gestural-technical stylistics of the Wii. The result is that interaction stylistics become comparable across an array of home networking devices, providing a gloss, in terms of affect, of the “simple enjoyment” Nintendo designers claim characterizes use of the Wii-console and its complex controllers.

Utilizing an approach to understanding the historical formation of subject positions by analyzing the interrelation of action and platforms, a perspective on the emerging cross-media game genre of Alternate Reality Games is developed. Unlike traditional computer and video games offering playgrounds insulated from the pressures of „real life“, Alternate Reality Games implement opportunities to act on the platforms of everyday. Instead of forming subjects in exclusive environments, Alternate Reality Games train players to be agents. These agents are capable of perceiving and navigating the thresholds between overlapping systems of reality and community. A number of strategies are described through which Alternate Reality Games are able to integrate into their surroundings and equip players with special agency inside of their everyday world.

The potential impact of violent electronic games on players’ aggression is a highly controversial issue in public debate. In contrast, scientific research has provided clear evidence that exposure to in-game violence can enhance aggressive cognitions, affect, and behavioral tendencies in players, both temporarily and in the long run, even if there is some disagreement about the strength of the evidence and the practical implications of the findings. The chapter reviews the current state of knowledge about the empirical evidence and theoretical explanations concerning the relationship between exposure to video game violence and aggression. It also presents a cross-sectional and a longitudinal study on the link between usage of violent electronic games and aggression in German adolescents.
