Diapause is an actively induced dormancy that has evolved in Metazoa to resist environmental stresses. In temperate regions, many diapausing insects overwinter at low temperatures by blocking embryonic, larval or adult development. Despite its Afro-tropical origin, Drosophila melanogaster migrated to temperate regions of Asia and Europe where females overwinter as adults by arresting gonadal development (reproductive diapause) at temperatures <13°C. Recent work in D. melanogaster has implicated the developmental hormones dILPs-2 and/or dILP3, and dILP5, homologues of vertebrate insulin/insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), in reproductive arrest. However, polymorphisms in timeless (tim) and couch potato (cpo) dramatically affect diapause inducibility and these dILP experiments could not exclude this common genetic variation contributing to the diapause phenotype. Here, we apply an extensive genetic dissection of the insulin signaling pathway which allows us to see both enhancements and reductions in egg development that are independent of tim and cpo variations. We show that a number of manipulations dramatically enhance diapause to ~100%. These include ablating, or reducing the excitability of the insulin-producing cells (IPCs) that express dILPs-2,3,5 employing the dilp2,3,5-/- triple mutant, desensitizing insulin signaling using a chico mutation, or inhibiting dILP2 and 5 in the hemolymph by over-expressing Imaginal Morphogenesis Protein-Late 2 (Imp-L2). In addition, triple mutant dilp2,3,5-/- females maintain high levels of diapause even when temperatures are raised in adulthood to 19°C. However at 22°C, these females all show egg development revealing that the effects are conditional on temperature and not a general female sterility. In contrast, over-expression of dilps-2/5 or enhancing IPC excitability, led to levels of ovarian arrest that approached zero, underscoring dILPs-2 and 5 as key antagonists of diapause. During winter, cave cricket larvae undergo dormancy in subterranean habitats; this dormancy is termed diapause in second year Troglophilus cavicola larvae because they mature during this time, and termed quiescence in T. neglectus, because they mature after dormancy. Here we used electron microscopy to analyze ultrastructural changes in the epithelial cells in the Malpighian tubules (MTs) of T. cavicola during diapause, in order to compare them with previous findings on T. neglectus. Moreover, the autophagosomes were studied with immunofluorescence microscopy in both species. Although the basic ultrastructure of the cells was similar, specific differences appeared during overwintering. During this natural starvation period, the nucleus, rER, the Golgi apparatus and mitochondria did not show structural changes, and the spherites were exploited. The abundances of autophagic structures in both species increased during overwintering. At the beginning of overwintering, in both species and sexes, the rates of cells with autophagic structures (phagophores, autophagosomes, autolysosomes and residual bodies) were low, while their rates increased gradually towards the end of overwintering. Between sexes, in T. cavicola significant differences were found in the autophagosome abundances in the middle and at the end, and in T. neglectus at the end of overwintering. Females showed higher rates of autophagic cells than males, and these were more abundant in T. cavicola. Thus, autophagic processes in the MT epithelial cells induced by starvation are mostly parallel in diapausing T. cavicola and quiescent T. neglectus, but more intensive in diapausing females. Insect heat shock proteins include ATP-independent small heat shock proteins and the larger ATP-dependent proteins, Hsp70, Hsp90, and Hsp60. In concert with cochaperones and accessory proteins, heat shock proteins mediate essential activities such as protein folding, localization, and degradation. Heat shock proteins are synthesized constitutively in insects and induced by stressors such as heat, cold, crowding, and anoxia. Synthesis depends on the physiological state of the insect, but the common function of heat shock proteins, often working in networks, is to maintain cell homeostasis through interaction with substrate proteins. Stress-induced expression of heat shock protein genes occurs in a background of protein synthesis inhibition, but in the course of diapause, a state of dormancy and increased stress tolerance, these genes undergo differential regulation without the general disruption of protein production. Diapause, seasonal physiological dormancy, is the primary life history strategy used by insect species inhabiting temperate climates for seasonal synchronisation. Biotic signals for diapause induction originating from host plants may provide dependable cues for insects expanding from subtropical regions., We investigated the effect of plant-mediated photoperiod cues on diapause initiation within the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say. The effect of photoperiod changes on potato leaf composition and its subsequent correlation with diapause initiation was tested., Analyses revealed a significant effect of short-day ( LD 8 : 16 h and LD 10 : 14 h) photoperiod growth regimens on both nitrogen content in potato leaves and diapause initiation within L. decemlineata., Potato plants grown under short day conditions displayed significantly higher levels of leaf nitrogen compared with long-day treated plants. Over 65% of beetles feeding upon short-day treated plants initiated diapause compared with < 20% of beetles placed upon long-day treated plants., The observation of seasonality-induced diapause signals by host plants signifies an important addition to the current array of plant-insect interactions. The present results suggest that seasonal synchrony may be the result of a more integrated system whereby host plant photoperiodism acts as an intermediate or supplementary physiological cue for diapause initiation. Dormancy and dispersal are thought to be major adaptive mechanisms that enable short-lived organisms to cope with environmental stochasticity. The few empirical investigations that have explored the relationship between these two strategies in disturbed environments have focused mainly on communities of annual desert plants and suggest that dispersal plays a negligible role, as compared with dormancy, in reducing the risk of genotype extinction., We predict that the relative advantage of dormancy versus dispersal is likely to be more balanced in species that disperse actively to select their reproductive locality., To examine this prediction, we explored the dormancy and dispersal capacities of four actively dispersing sibling weevil species ( Curculio spp.) that exploit the same, highly variable resource (oak acorns). The ability of each species to spread risks over time was estimated from the variability of dormancy duration within cohorts, while their ability to disperse spatially was quantified by flight performance., We show that a first species, C. elephas, which was able to spread risk over time through dormancy, exhibited only medium flight capacities. In contrast, a second species, C. glandium, was able to fly over very long distances, but was hardly capable of spreading risk over time. Surprisingly, the two remaining species ( C. venosus and C. pellitus) proved inefficient in spreading risk either in space or in time and seem to exhibit risk avoidance rather than risk-spreading strategy. Diapause and cold tolerance are essential for temperate insects to pass the winter, with the mechanisms controlling these two traits varying considerably among insects. In the present study, diapause and cold tolerance are compared among three Leptopilina species: Leptopilina japonica Novković & Kimura, Leptopilina victoriae Nordlander and Leptopilina ryukyuensis Novković & Kimura, all larval parasitoids of frugivorous drosophilid flies, with the aim of understanding their climatic adaptations. The first species is divided into the temperate ( Leptopilina japonica japonica) and subtropical subspecies ( Leptopilina japonica formosana), and the latter two species are distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions. The temperate subspecies of L. japonica enters prepupal diapause at low temperatures (15 or 18 °C), irrespective of photoperiod, and some individuals enter diapause when exposed to 0 °C for 1 or 2 day(s) or when placed at low humidity. Leptopilina victoriae also shows signs of diapause initiation at 15 °C, although L. ryukyuensis and L. j. formosana from the subtropical regions do not. Preimaginal viability at low temperature (13, 14 or 15 °C) is usually lower in L. victoriae from the tropical regions compared with L. japonica or L. ryukyuensis from the temperate or subtropical regions. Diapausing prepupae of the temperate subspecies appear to be cold tolerant. However, the cold tolerance of nondiapausing prepupae, pupae and adult females varies little among the tropical, subtropical and temperate species or subspecies, and adult males of the temperate subspecies of L. japonica are less cold tolerant than those of the tropical or subtropical species or subspecies. Maniola butterflies undergo summer dormancy in dry and hot habitats and deposit their eggs only in early autumn when conditions become more favourable for their offspring. Female individuals of this genus are therefore relatively long-lived. For long-lived butterflies adult diet is of particular importance. We tested if added amino acids in nectar substitute fed to the butterflies affected timing of oviposition, fecundity and longevity. A hundred Maniola females were sampled from Mediterranean and Central European populations and made to oviposit under controlled laboratory conditions. Forty individuals were offered sucrose solution with additional amino acids while the remainder were fed with plain sucrose solution. We found that egg-laying strategies and longevity depended on geographic provenance rather than diet. Supplementary amino acids in adult diet did neither prolong lifetime nor increase total egg production. Maniola females from Sardinia started to lay eggs at least 20 days later relative to Central European M. jurtina and lived three times as long. Mediterranean individuals had on average twice the length of reproductive period and lifespan relative to Central European ones, and individuals of Pannonian origin lived longer than Alpine butterflies. Average total egg numbers were 200-350 eggs per female and did not differ significantly between populations. The fact that oviposition strategy could not be altered through diet may indicate that for univoltine butterflies, like Maniola, diet-quality at the adult stage is less important than endogenous factors, or factors the butterflies are exposed to in an earlier developmental stage than the imago. The mechanisms by which gall-inducing insects cope with variation in their host plant phenology are poorly known. Pseudotectococcus rolliniae Hodgson and Goncalves (Hemiptera: Eriococcidae) induces leaf galls in Rollinia laurifolia Schltdl. (Annonaceae), which loses its leaves during the dry season. The fate of the gall-inducing stage during that season was determined by sampling a natural population of P. rolliniae during 3 years. Morphometric comparison among different larval instars and morphological descriptions of plant and gall features were performed. Crawlers leave the galls before leaf fall and move to the stems, where they induce a second gall morphotype and undergo dormancy throughout the dry season. They moult when the vernal rains begin, move to sprouting leaves and induce leaf galls, as second-instar nymphs, not as crawlers as is usual for Eriococcidae. This is the first report of an insect gall induced for dormancy, which is likely to be a true diapause phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Focusing on the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (Pentatomidae), in central Japan the effects of climate change on true bugs (Insecta: Heteroptera) are reviewed. In the early 1960s, the northern edge of the species's distribution was in Wakayama Prefecture (34.1°N) and distribution was limited by the +5°C coldest month (January) mean temperature isothermal line. By 2000, N. viridula was recorded 70 km further north (in Osaka, 34.7°N). Historical climate data were used to reveal possible causes of the northward range expansion. The increase of mean and lowest winter month temperatures by 1–2°C in Osaka from the 1950s to the 1990s improved potential overwintering conditions for N. viridula. This promoted northward range expansion of the species. In Osaka, adult diapause in N. viridula is induced after mid-September, much later than in other local seed-feeding heteropterans. This late diapause induction results in late-season ineffective reproduction: some females start oviposition in autumn when the progeny have no chance of attaining adulthood and surviving winter. Both reproductive adults and the progeny die. A period from mid-September to early November represents a phenological mismatch: diapause is not yet induced in all adults, but it is already too late to start reproduction. Females that do not start reproduction but enter diapause in September have reduced postdiapause reproductive performance: they live for a shorter period, have a shorter period of oviposition and produce fewer eggs in smaller egg masses compared with females that emerge and enter diapause later in autumn. To some extent, N. viridula remains maladapted to Osaka environmental conditions. Ecological perspectives on establishment in recently colonized areas are discussed. A review of available data suggests that terrestrial and aquatic Heteroptera species respond to climate change by shifting their distribution ranges, changing abundance, phenology, voltinism, physiology, behaviour, and community structure. Expected responses of Heteroptera to further climate warming are discussed under scenarios of slight (<2°C) and substantial (>2°C) temperature increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red Listing organisms is an iterative process involving two variables. First, the conservation status of a taxon becomes clearer as more information becomes available, and secondly, the actual status changes as the taxon becomes more threatened or less threatened. Using a 20-year database of South African dragonflies has enabled us to hone conservation assessments and to arrive at a realistic appraisal of their true conservation status. Changes in the evaluation of taxa came about through improved knowledge of habitat and particularly from information on the exact flight period. This background improved the apparency of the taxa so enabling accurate conservation assessments. The temporal shortcoming was addressed in detail by focusing on the core of the Cape Floristic Region global biodiversity hotspot, and recording the phenology of species. We found that there were large differences in emergence times. While flight times may not be a source of error in the temperate northern hemisphere, they can be a major issue in low and southern latitudes. Indeed, the error can be so great that species thought to be extinct were effectively resurrected. Temporal shortcomings can only be overcome by first undertaking a presence/absence survey over time to determine the appropriate time of year for making rigorous Red List assessments. This is not a criticism of the Red Listing process per se, which, for this taxon, we found to be largely sound. However, the results do emphasize that a critical approach to methodology is a necessary foundation when searching for trend indicators from the Red List with regards to lesser-known taxa.
