Search

The Diptera fauna of the Galápagos Archipelago is updated and an annotated checklist is presented. Currently 50 families, 207 genera, and a minimum of 324 species are recorded from the islands. Approximately 107 species are considered to have arrived on the Galápagos Islands through human introductions, an estimated 101 species are considered endemic, 42 species have naturally colonized the islands from mainland Americas, 21 species are either introduced or arrived naturally and 53 species remain unidentified. The following new combination is proposed: Chrysanthrax primitivus (Walker) is moved to Hemipenthes Loew as H. primitivus (Walker) comb. nov. All references to the Galápagos taxonomic literature are included, known island species distributions listed and general remarks on the biology of many species are provided.

Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy is found in all biogeographic regions. The genus contains approximately 360 known species, 18 of which have been recorded from Mexico. Herein, we describe six new species in the Fannia pretiosa-group, redescribe Fannia gilvitarsis Chillcott, and provide diagnosis, habitus images, drawings of the male terminalia, and an identification key for all species of the group that occur in Mexico. All Fannia pretiosa-group species from Mexico share a similar morphology of the mid tibia, hind femur, and male terminalia.

Fannia canicularis is of temperate climates, and it is likely that if it was introduced in the Neotropics from the ships of early explorers, it would not become established. Fannia gilvitarsis Chillcott, 1961 (Figs 1H, 3F, 4F, 5F, 6F, 11, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsi white-yellowish, except for tarsomere 5, with apical half brown and basal half white (Fig. 11D). Mid basitarsus swollen ventrally at middle (Fig. 1H). Hind coxa bare posteriorly. Hind femur slightly curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a pv tuft with five long setae (twice longer than width of femur) on the swelling (Fig. 11F). Wing slightly brownish (Fig. 11B). Redescription. Male. Body length: 6.8 mm. Wing length: 7.1 mm. Head. Eye short and sparsely setulose. Ocellar triangle black; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Frontal vitta velvety brownish-red to black with silver pruinosity, at the narrowest point four times wider than width of anterior ocellus (Fig. 11A). Frontal setae 15. Fronto-orbital plate black-reddish with silver pruinosity. Parafacial bare, brownish-red with silver pruinosity. Frontogenal suture and gena silver pruinose. Gena brownish-red to black (Fig. 11A). Pedicel with dorsal seta developed, with about a third length of arista. Postpedicel black, golden pilose. Thorax. Scutum without vittae, with inconspicuous silver pruinose on postpronotal and notopleural regions (Fig. 11B). Acrostichal setulae triserial presuturally and triserial to quadriserial postsuturally. Dorsocentrals 2+3, long, the posterior-most postsutural pair slightly longer than the others. Prealar 2, short (about a third of posterior notopleural length), the posterior one thinner, both similar in length. Katepisternum with about 10 long and thick setae ventrally (Fig. 11C). Wing. Slightly brownish (Fig. 11B, 11C). Calypters white. Haltere brown with stem and base yellow. Legs. Black, pulvilli brownish and tarsi brown, except for the fore tarsomeres 1–5 which are white-yellowish. Fore tarsomeres 1 and 2 slightly enlarged laterally. Fore tarsomere 5 with a pair of long setulae dorsally (as long as tarsomere 5 width) (Fig. 11D). Mid femur with 1 row of ad setae; with 1 row of decreasing av from base to apex; 2 rows of long pv, thicker apically, a tuft of short v setae on preapical third (Fig. 11E). Mid tibia with 1 submedian ad, 1 median pd, 1 strong and long preapical d, 1 apical seta on a, pd, p, pv, and v (v longer, similar to d preapical seta) (Fig. 11E). Mid basitarsus slightly enlarged ventrally (Fig. 1H). Hind coxa bare on posterior margin. Hind femur curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a tuft of long setae on the pv surface which continuous in a row decreasing in length basally, 1 row of ad to d setae, pd to pv rows of setae from the femur base to the pre-apical swelling, 1 long preapical av setae, 1 short preapical ad and pd (Fig. 11F). Hind tibia with 2 submedian av setae; 1 apical av (Fig. 11F). Abdomen. Metallic black-bluish with silver pruinosity, elongate, with developed setae, tergite 5 with long marginal setae (about twice longer than others). Black pruinosity forming a central narrow longitudinal stripe dorsally. Syntergosternite with 3 long lateral setae, not longer than sternite 5. Sternite 5 quadrangular, posterior margin profoundly indented (Fig. 3F). Terminalia. Surstyli fused with epandrium. Surstyli slightly curved apically (Figs 4F, 5F). Fannia bisetata sp. nov. (Figs 3E, 4E, 5E, 6E, 10, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsi brown (Fig. 10D). Hind coxa with two long setulae posteriorly. Hind femur curved with preapical swelling on v surface, with an av tuft with 3 long setae and a pv tuft with 5 long setae (three times longer than the femur width) on the swelling (Fig. 10F). Wing brownish. Description. Holotype male. Body length: 5.2 mm. Wing length: 5.2 mm. Head. Eye densely setulose. Ocellar triangle black; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Frontal vitta black, with silver pruinosity and an inconspicuous golden pruinosity forming a central stripe, at the narrowest point twice wider than width of anterior ocellus (Fig. 10A). 19 frontal setae. Fannia grisalesae sp. nov. (Figs 1G, 3G, 4G, 5G, 6G, 12, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomere 2–4 white-yellowish, tarsomere 1 with basal half brown and apical half white-yellowish, tarsomere 5 brown (Fig. 12D). Mid basitarsus with basal fourth enlarged and covered with four long and thick curved setae (Fig. 1G). Hind coxa bare. Hind femur curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with tuft of five long pv setae (three times longer than width of femur) on the swelling, curved apically (Fig. 12F). Wing slightly brownish (Fig. 12C). Description. Male. Body length: 6.0 mm. Wing length: 5.5 mm. Head. Eye short and sparsely setulose. Ocellar triangle dark brown; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Tarsomeres 1–5 with apical to preapical setulae thicker than the others (Fig. 12D). Mid femur with 1 row of ad to d setae, with 1 row of decreasing av from base to apex; 1 row of long p and pv setae (thicker on the apical third) (Fig. 12E). Mid tibia with 1 submedian ad, 1 median pd, 1 strong and long preapical d, 1 apical seta on a, ad, p, pv, and v (v longer and thicker) (Fig. 12E). Fannia abdominiseta sp. nov. (Figs 2, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomere 1–4 white-yellowish, tarsomere 5 brown (Fig. 2D). Mid basitarsus enlarged ventrally. Hind coxa bare. Hind femur slightly curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a tuft of five long pv setae (twice longer than width of femur) on the swelling, becoming shorter towards base, and connected to a row of pv setae reaching the base of the femur (Fig. 2F). Wing hyaline (Fig. 2C). Syntergosternite with 5 long lateral setae (the two most dorsal are curved and twice longer than sternite 5) (Fig. 2C). Description. Male. Body length: 6.2 mm. Pulvilli light brown. Tarsi brown, except for fore tarsomeres 1–4, white-yellowish (Fig. 2D). Fore tarsomeres 1 and 2 slightly enlarged laterally (Fig. 2D). Fore tarsomeres 5 with 3 long d setulae (Fig. 2D). Mid femur with 1 row of ad to d setae, with 1 row of decreasing av from base to apex; 1 row of long p and pv setae (thicker on the apical third) (Fig. 2E). Mid tibia with 1 submedian ad, 1 median pd, 1 strong and long preapical d, 1 apical seta on a, ad, p, pv, and v (v longer, similar to d preapical seta) (Fig. 2E). Mid basitarsus enlarged ventrally. Hind tibia with 2 median av; 1 submedian ad; 1 apical seta on av (Fig. 2F). Abdomen. Metallic light brown with silver pruinosity, elongate, with developed setae, tergite 5 with long marginal setae (slightly longer than the others). Hind femur strongly curved dorsoventrally with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a pv tuft with 5 long setae (apically curled and twice longer than width of femur) on the swelling; with a complete row of long av setae (about 3 times longer than width of femur) and a complete row of pv setae (as long as femur width) reaching the v swelling (Fig. 9F). Fannia pedregalensis sp. nov. (Figs 1F, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H, 13, 14, 15, 16) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomere 1–4 white-yellowish, tarsomere 5 brown (Fig. 13D). Hind coxa bare. Hind femur slightly curved with pre-apical swelling on v surface, with a tuft of long pv setae (twice longer than width of femur) on the swelling, becoming shorter towards the base (the shorter setae about half width of femur) (Fig. 13F). Wing slightly brownish (Fig. 13C). Description. Holotype male. Body length: 6.0 mm. Wing length: 5.2 mm. Head. Eye short and sparsely setulose. Ocellar triangle black; ocellar setae proclinate and developed (as long as frontal setae). Frontal vitta velvety black, golden pruinose, at the narrowest point two times wider than anterior width of ocellus (Fig. 13A). Frontal setae 17. Fronto-orbital plate black, with silver pruinosity. Mid femur with 1 row of short ad, av and pv setae, 5 long prepical setae connected to a row from p to pv. Mid tibia not constricted, with 1 supramedian pd, 1 submedian ad, and 1 preapical ad. Hind femur not modified, with a row of ad setae, 2 long submedian av setae, 1 preapical pd (Figs 14B, 14C). Abdomen rounded. Terminalia: cercus longer than epiproct (Fig. 15A); hypoproct triangular and setulose, slightly longer than wide (Fig. 15B); sternite 8 reduced to 2 separated plates with long setae; sternite 7 twice wider than its length; sternite 6 trapezoid (Fig. 15B). Spermathecae 3, semicircular, one of them smaller with about half diameter of the other (Fig. 15A). Morphological variation. The leg coloration varies from dark brown to light brown; some specimens have the sternite 5 more enlarged, as F. grisalesae (Fig. 3G). The specimens from Chiapas have the wing slightly darker on the costal region, the surstyli slightly more enlarged apically and the lateral spike on surstyli more narrow and protruded. Etymology. The Fannidae includes over 400 described species, mainly known from the Holarctic Region. The number of species in the Oriental Region are underestimated. The Fannia fuscinata-group was established by Wang et al. in 2011, consisting of nine species at present. A new species of the genus Fannia (Diptera, Fanniidae) is described from Yunnan, part of the Oriental Region in China, namely Fannia menglaensis sp. nov. The detailed description, photographs and drawings of adults and male terminalia of F. menglaensis sp. nov. are provided. All specimens are preserved in the Museum of Beijing Forestry University.

The present study examines whether the chaetotaxy of the costal vein in the calyptrate families Fanniidae and Muscidae deserves more attention in phylogenetic and taxonomic contexts. An overview of the macrotrichia and their arrangement on wing vein C is given. Special attention is given to the presence/absence of ventral and dorsal setulae on the costal sectors CS1‒3. This is described as one variable character (A) with nine states (A0‒A8). Specimens of both sexes (when possible) of each species belonging to 4 of a total of 5 fanniid genera and 115 of a total of 179 muscid genus-group taxa were examined and scored for character A. It was found that the presumed ancestral state of character A differs between the two families. It is further shown that the main transformational trend in character A in Muscidae has been bi-directional, leading either to the loss of ventral setulae or the gain of dorsal setulae. The utility of character A in the Fanniidae and Muscidae is many-sided and involves taxa ranging from species to family. It is concluded that character A and other aspects of costal chaetotaxy deserve more attention in morphology-based studies of calyptrate flies.

Family Fanniidae Schnabl & Dziedzicki, 1911 A distinctive, modest-sized family known for ca 400 extant species currently classified in five genera (Table 1). Species belonging to four fanniid genera have presently been scored for the distribution of setulae dorsally and ventrally (character A) on vein C (Table 1) in agreement with the states described above. • Euryomma Stein, 1899, Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Fig. 2A–C), Piezura Rondani, 1844 (Fig. 2D) All examined species are without ventral setulae behind the lower anterior row of alternating spinules and setulae of vein C (state A0): Euryomma americanum Chillcott, 1961, E. muisca Grisales, Wolff & de Carvalho, 2012, E. peregrinum (Meigen, 1826), Fannia (50+ spp) incl. F. fuscula (Fallén, 1825) (Fig. 2A–C), Piezura graminicola (Zetterstedt, 1846) and P. pardalina Rondani, 1866 (Fig. 2D). In Piezura graminicola and P. pardalina (Fig. 2D) rows of ventral and dorsal costal setulae on CS1 represent setulae displaced from the anterior spinule-setula rows; these accordingly consist of spinules only. • Australofannia Pont, 1977 (Figs 3A–D, 4A–B) This genus consists of Australofannia spiniclunis Pont, 1977 and one undescribed species, both endemic to Australia (Pont 1977). Examination of A. spiniclunis revealed a costal chaetotaxy deviating substantially from the usual fanniid pattern. Both sexes (Figs 3–4) have vein C extensively setulose both ventrally and dorsally (state A8). A checklist is presented of all 986 extant species of Diptera known from the archipelago of the Maltese Islands situated in the central Mediterranean. Species considered to be alien to the Islands are listed with annotations in Appendix 1. The history of dipterology applicable to the islands is outlined and the three important historical published records by Zetterstedt, Rondani and Bezzi & de Stefani-Perez are listed in Appendices 2–4. Species names that are synonyms are indicated where these were used in published records for Malta more or less after the Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera was published. Species we consider to have been misidentifications are also indicated with an annotation in most cases. Vermileo immaculatus Carles-Tolrá syn. n. & Cuesta-Segura and Vermileo balearicus Wheeler syn. n. are proposed junior synonyms of Vermileo vermileo (Linnaeus).

A new species of the genusFannia(Diptera, Fanniidae) is described from Yunnan, China, namelyFanniabaihualingensissp. nov.The male habitus as well as terminalia are documented with focus-stacked photographs. A detailed comparison of new species with related species is provided.

Fanniidae This family, formerly considered a subfamily of Muscidae (Sabrosky 1999, Marshall 2012), contains more than 350 species (Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1866a, 1868b, 1871a, 1877c) described 13 Palaearctic and one South American nominal species in his “ Stirps Anthomyinae ”. The family Fanniidae was proposed by Schnabl & Dziedzicki (1911). Three of these are currently considered as valid, one as a senior (but invalid) synonym, and ten as junior synonyms (Pont 1972, 1986a, 2002, Gorodkov et al. 1995, Carvalho et al. 2003). Hennig (1961: 226) examined the type material in the MZUF without publishing any lectotype designation. Rondani (1866a) proposed one name in synonymy and was not made available by use as a valid species before 1961; Costa (1866) listed one unpublished name (nomen nudum) of Rondani. Distance between eye margins at upper part of frons 0.10 mm (about 2x width of anterior ocellus). Frontal vita linear (almost absent) in dorsal half of frons, about 0.15 mm wide ventrally, black in dorsal view and lighter in ventral view, without setulae. Both fronto-orbital plate and parafacial silvery in dorsal view and almost black in ventral view. Fronto-orbital plate approx. 0.05 mm wide dorsally and 0.10 mm ventrally, 6–7 frontal setae without interstitials. Parafacial at upper part 0.10 mmm wide, ventrally approx. 0.08 mm wide (in middle about 2/3 as wide as first flagellomere). Face and gena grey. Eye without ommatrichia. Occiput black, postocular setulae short, uniserial and nearly uniformly long in dorsal part. Antennae black, flagellomere 2x as long as broad. Arista black, basally thickened, microscopically pubescent. Proboscis short, theca of proboscis thinly dusted, clypeus microtrichose. Palpus black, narrow, subequally long as proboscis. Thorax. Black, uniformly rather light bluish-grey microtrichose from all points of view including pleura, without vitae. Presutural acrostichals biserial, postsutural triserial. Setae distinguishable from setulae: 2 postpronotal, 1 seta remarkably close to inner margin of Postpronotum, 1 presutural supraalar, 2 postsutural intraalars, 1 postsutural supraalar. Two prealar setae, anterior one half as long as posterior notopleural, 2 postalars. Notopleuron with two setae and without setulae. Proepisternal depression bare. Both proepisternum and proepimeron with 1 long and 1 shorter seta. Wings very slightly darkened with brownish-yellow veins. Calyptrae white, lower one distinctly projecting beyond upper one. Halter yellow. Legs. Legs blackish-brown, knees of fore legs only very indistinctly paler. Coxa without modified setae. Fore femur with 3 rows of posteroventral, posterior and posterodorsal setae. Fore tibia without setae except preapicals. Mid femur strongly narrowed in apical 1/5, with a row of anteroventrals subequally long as femur depth, abruptly denser and shorter just before apical narrowed part; posteroventral setae in a single row basally, in apical part in two rows, and a single regular row of posterior setae, all slightly longer than femur depth. Mid tibia slightly ventrally compressed in basal third, the ventral mat of soft pubescence about as long as tibia depth on apical half and shorter on basal half, 0–1 anterodorsal and 1 posterodorsal seta. Mid basal tarsomere with distinct basal ventral crest. Hind coxa without setae on posterior inner margin. Hind femur distinctly swollen in apical third, this swollen part contains more than 10 long and irregularly arranged anteroventrals (absent on basal part of femur); with a complete row of posteroventrals turning ventrally on swollen part and merging with anteroventrals. Hind tibia with 1 long submedian dorsal seta, 1 anterodorsal and 1 anteroventral seta, both inserted slightly below dorsal seta and with several short and fine posteroventrals. Abdomen. Ground-colour brownish-black. Densely light grey dusted; segments 2 to 4 with narrow dark midline, lateral parts of tergites without darkening. Terminalia. As in Figs 4–5. Cercal plate well fused, narrow dorsally and broader ventrally, and tapered at tip; surstylus very broad basally; bacilliform sclerite corkscrew-shaped. Measurements. Length of wing, 3.9– 4.1 mm. Length of body, 4.6 mm. Distribution: Czech Republic and Slovakia. Remarks. Fannia bohemica sp. nov. belongs to F. postica group. In the recent key (Barták et al. 2016) this species leads to couplet 20 but differs from all species arranged here by the apically swollen hind femur with more than 10 anteroventrals. Genitalia (except cercal plate) are remarkably similar to the recently described F. latistylata Wang, 2007. However, the latter species differs by presence of posterodorsal setae on hind coxa, lacking crest on mid basal tarsomere, 13–14 frontal setae, 1 supraalar, and brown calyptra and wing.

Fannia bohemica sp. nov. (Czech Republic, Slovakia) is described and illustrated. Male of F. latifrontalis Hennig, 1955 is described and illustrated for the first time. Fannia jezoensis Nishida, 1976 is first reported from West Palaearctic, Fannia morrisoni Malloch, 1913 is first recorded from Palaearctic Region. Fannia umbrosa (Stein, 1895) and F. armata (Meigen, 1826; first record based on morphologically identified specimens) are new records from Nearctic Region. Six species (Fannia fuscitibia Stein, 1920, F. latifrontalis, F. limbata (Tiensuu, 1938), F. verrallii (Meade, 1891), F. gotlandica Ringdahl, 1926 and F. spathiophora, Malloch, 1918) are recorded for the first time from Slovakia.

Fannia bribri sp. nov. (Figs. 1D, 2 J���K, 5D, 6D, 8D) Diagnosis. Tiny palpi, as short as the basal third of the proboscidae; eye with short and sparse setulae; mid tibia with long pubescence on ventral surface, almost the same length as the tibia; cercal plate completely fused. Description. Holotype male (Fig. 1D) Head: eye with short and sparse setulae. Frontal vitta dark brown. 14 fr. 1 pair of oc, proclinate and developed and 2 posterior setae. Parafacial with silver pollinosity, gena thin and black. Parafacial bare. Scape black, 1 dorsal seta. Pedicel black with 1 strong seta and some short setae. Postpedicel dark brown, silver hairy, 2 times the length of pedicel. Arista dark brown, with short pubescence, rays shorter than width of base of arista. Tiny palpus, dark brown and spatulate (Fig. 2J). Thorax: dark brown; scutum without vittae. Acr 2:2, irregular rows. Dc 2:3. Pprn 3, developed and surrounded by setulae. Pra 1. Proepimeron setulose, 1 conspicuous setae and setulose area. Katespisternum setulose. Wing: yellowish. Calypters and haltere brownish. Terminalia (Fig. 6D): epandrium square, on basal half with two developed setae; surstylus broad and concave internally, articulated with epandrium; cercal plate broad and concave, with fine and long projections from the middle of the plate, longer that surtylus. Bacilliform process present, width on base half and acute on apical half, shaped as a comma. Female: unknown. Biology. Label information indicates that this species occurs in forests in Costa Rica, 1000���2050 m. Nothing else is known about its habits or biology. Comments. This species possibly belongs to the carbonaria group, subgroup minutipalpis (Chillcott 1961), because of their tiny palpi and cercal plate with ventral long process. Fannia minutipalpis (Stein), F. brevipalpis Chillcott, 1961, F. neopolychaeta Chillcott, 1961 and F. trogonifera Chillcott, 1961 also belong to this group and are found in the Holarctic region. Etymology. Name in apposition. The species epithet refers to the Bribri indigenous people, who once inhabited the Puntarenas province in Costa Rica. Type material. Holotype male (INBio). Fannia quillacingas sp. nov. (Figs. 1J, 4 A–C, 5J, 7B, 8J) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomeres 2–5 flattened and tarsomeres 2–3 laterally expanded; fore tarsomere 1 yellowish, 2–3 partially yellowish; fronto–orbital plate, frontal vitta and facial ridge strongly protruding; gena with a shallow groove under the eye. Description. Holotype male (Fig. 1J) Head: eye densely setulose. Frontal vitta velvety black, pollinose. 14–15 fr. 1 pair of oc proclinate and developed, 5 less developed setulae on ocellar area. Fronto–orbital plate silver and pollinose. Parafacial bare, golden pollinose and wide, almost the same width along. Fronto–orbital plate, frontal vitta and facial ridge strongly protruding (Fig. 4A). Fronto–genal suture and gena golden pollinose, gena with a shallow groove under the eye (Fig. 4B). Scape black, 3–4 setae reaching pedicel. Pedicel black pollinose with a dorsal seta developed and surrounded minor setae. Postpedicel black, golden pilose, 2 times the length of pedicel. Arista black, with short pubescence, rays shorter than width of base of arista. Palpus black and slightly spatulate. Prementum long and sclerotized. Thorax: black. Scutum without vittae. Acr 3:3 not arranged in rows. Dc 2:3, long. Pprn 4, developed. Pra 2. Pro–epimeron setulose. Wing: brownish, with upper third between C vein and half of R 2+3 vein slightly darker. Calypters brownish with border darker. Haltere brown with stem and base lighter in colour. Legs: black, pulvilli yellowish and tarsi black, except for first fore tarsomere completely yellowish and tarsomeres 2 and 3 partially yellowish (Fig. 1J). Fore femur setulose on posterior surface with 1 row of long pv and d. Fore tibia with 2 sub–median av and 1 stronger sub–apical; 1 apical p; 1 pd. Fore tarsomere 1 short with a little tuft of short basal v; tarsomeres 2–5 flattened and tarsomeres 2–3 expanded laterally. Mid femur with 2 rows of long pv, strong setae on apical third and 1 row of av. Mid tibia on ventral surface with pronounced constriction on basal half area, densely setulose on apical half, 2 apical v; 3 median a; 1 ad; 4 median p and 1 apical; 1 apical pv. Hind coxa bare setae on posterior margin. Hind femur on ventral surface with a strong almost median protuberance, with tuft of setae and some of them stronger and hook–like, apical half setulose; av, a and ad surfaces with strong sparse setae (Fig. 4C); pv surface setulose. Female: unknown. Biology. Label information indicates that this species occurs in southern Ecuador, in the Andes above 2200 m. Nothing else is known about its habits or biology. Comments. Fannia quillacingas sp. nov. resembles the anthracina species group of Fannia, mainly in the characters of the fore tarsomeres (expanded, flattened and yellowish). This new species differs in the extent of the yellowish color in these tarsomeres and in the lateral expansion. Etymology. Name in apposition. Fannia palta sp. nov. (Figs. 1H, 3 J–L, 5H, 6H, 8H) Diagnosis. Fore tarsomere 1 with 1 broad leaf–like spine at the tip of posterior surface and another tiny leaf–like spine; tarsomeres 3–5 flattened; tarsomere 1 and 2 yellowish on apical half. Description. Holotype male (Fig. 1H). Head: eye densely setulose. Frontal vitta velvety black, pollinose. 15 fr. Ocellar triangle black; oc proclinate and developed, 5 less developed setulae on ocellar area. Fronto–orbital plate black and pollinose. Parafacial bare, narrowing ventrally, golden pollinose. Fronto–genal suture and gena golden pollinose, gena with long setae. Terminalia (Fig. 6H): epandrium wider than long, strong setae on basal half, short apical internal expansions; cercal plate elongate, globose, apically wide, short weak setae on the plate; surstylus articulates with epandrium, curved apically, shaped as a comma in lateral view, basal half with internal basal expansion; bacilliform process spiral and simple. Female: unknown. Biology. Label information indicates that this species occurs in the Andean highlands, above 3000 m, from southern Ecuador to the Central Cordillera in Colombia. Nothing else is known about its habits or biology. Comments. Fannia palta sp. nov. is morphologically similar to Fannia albitarsis Stein, 1911, in the first fore tarsomere having 1 broad leaf–like spine at the tip of posterior surface but differ in the fore tarsi that are not strong, flattened and yellowish. Fannia palta sp. nov. has fore tarsomeres 1 and 2 with apical half yellowish and the remainder brownish, tarsomeres 3–5 slightly flattened. Etymology. Name in apposition. The species epithet refers to the Palta indigenous people that once inhabited the Province of Loja in the pre-Incan era. Type material. Holotype male (UTPL). Fannia huetare sp. nov. (Figs. 1E, 3 A–E, 5E, 6E, 8E) Diagnosis. Vibrissa and subvibrissal setulae hook–like; fore coxa with strong spine on posterior margin; fore tarsomeres 2–3 flattened; mid coxa with spine on ventral surface; hind tibia without setae on antero–ventral surface; facial margin with strong anterior projection. Description. Holotype male (Fig. 1E) Head: eye setulose. Frontal vitta dark brown. 18 fr. 1 pair of oc, proclinate and developed and 1 posterior seta. Bacilliform process present and spiraled. Female: unknown. Biology. Label information indicates that this species occurs in highland forests of Costa Rica, 2600–3000 m. Nothing else is known about its habits or biology. Comments. This species possibly belongs to the scalaris group and maybe is close to F. ciliatisima Chillcott, 1961 and Fannia columbiana Chillcott, 1961 because of the strong setae on fore and mid coxa. These species occur in the Holarctic region. Etymology. Name in apposition. The species epithet refers to the Huetares indigenous people (also known as Pacacuas or Guetares), who once inhabited the San Jose province in Costa Rica. Type material. Holotype male (INBio). Fannia tsachilas sp. nov. is morphologically similar to Fannia iguaque, F. chingaza and F. sutagao described by Grisales, Wolff and Carvalho (2012), due to the fore tarsomeres 3���5 flattened, but differs in the hind femur and the terminalia. In the neotropics, vegetation formations at high elevations are often unique, with their own characteristic vegetation because of unique and complex evolutionary histories. The complexity of the biogeographic and ecological structure of the fauna is demonstrated by the specialized fauna and flora occurring in these regions. Fanniidae (Diptera) is one of these specialized groups that became very diversified in the highlands. Currently, of the 91 species of Fanniidae in the Neotropical region, 43 (8 Euryomma , 35 Fannia ) occur exclusively in Andean and Central American highlands. Here, we increase that highland diversity by describing 14 new species from 1000–4150 m.a.s.l. in the Andes and Central America: Fannia awa sp. nov., F. bari sp. nov., F. boruca sp. nov., F. bribri sp. nov., F. huetare sp. nov., F. humahuaca sp. nov., F. kabekwa sp. nov., F. palta sp. nov., F. polleti sp. nov., F. quillacingas sp. nov., F. teribi sp. nov., F. terraba sp. nov., F. tsachilas sp. nov. and F. yukpa sp. nov. We also provide an identification key for male specimens and diagnoses and descriptions of the species, along with photographs and illustrations of the male terminalia. New records and updated distributions are also provided for the Andean species.

Fore tibia with modified apical ventral seta; fore tarsomeres 3–5 slightly flattened; mid tibia with one modified posteroventral seta; hind coxa bare on posterior margin; hind femur strongly curved on ventral surface. Wing brownish, without upper third darker, fore tarsomeres 3���5 flattened, mid tibia with apical modified setae (leaf���like) on pv surface, hind coxa setulose on posterior margin, hind femur slightly curved, anterior surface slightly setulose and posterior surface with a tuft of short setae on the posterior protuberance. Mid femur slightly constricted on pre���apical ventral surface; 1 row of short ad with 4 developed setae on the apex; 1 row of strong av that decrease in length towards apex; 1 row of long pv with hooked apex, setae decrease in length towards apex; 1 row of weak p with 6 longer on apical third. Mid tibia on ventral surface with 2 pronounced constrictions on basal half area, densely setulose on through the surface; 1 developed pre���apical ad; 2 developed a on mid apical half and 1 apical; 1 developed apical av; 1 apical modified pv (leaflike) (Fig. 4M); 2 p. Hind coxa setulose on posterior margin. Hind femur on ventral surface with a slightly pre���apical protuberance; 1 row of ad, 4 stronger setae running towards dorsal surface (Fig. 4N); 1 row of longer curved av, that does not form a tuft on the pre���apical protuberance; anterior surface slightly setulose (Fig. 4N); posterior surface with a tuft of short setae on the posterior protuberance. Hind tibia with 1 developed median and 1 pre���apical d; 1 long and developed median ad; anterior surface with short setae along and 1 short apical; 2 strong median av, 1 apical. Abdomen: elongate, black, greyish pollinose, developed setae. Sternite 1 densely setulose. Sternite 5 (Fig. 5N). Terminalia (Fig. 7F): epandrium wider than long; cercal plate elongated, with short weak setae along the plate, fusioned on basal third; surstylus strongly articulated with epandrium, broad at the base and thin at the apex, shaped like a foot, bacilliform process spiral and simple. Female: unknown. Biology. Label information indicates that this species is found on or near decomposing flesh (carcasses). It occurs from the Oriental Cordillera in Colombia to the Andean highlands of Ecuador (2300���2900 m). Nothing else is known about its habits or biology. Comments. Fannia yukpa sp. nov. is similar to Fannia pijao Grisales, Wolff & Carvalho, 2012 and Fannia quimbaya Grisales, Wolff & Carvalho, 2012 from Colombia. Fannia yukpa sp. nov. differs due to its mid tibia with apically modified setae (leaflike) on pv surface. Etymology. Name in apposition. The species epithet refers to the Yukpa indigenous people, of the Serran��a del Perija, between Colombia and Venezuela. Type material. Holotype male (ICN). COLOMBIA: Cundinamarca. Based on revision of large recent collections of the authors, the following five species are first recorded from the Czech Republic: Fannia collini d’Assis-Fonseca, 1966 (simultaneously first record in Central Europe), Fannia lugubrina (Zetterstedt, 1838), Fannia melania (Dufour, 1839), Fannia slovaca Gregor & Rozkošný, 2005, and Fannia brinae Albuquerque, 1951 (simultaneously first record from low altitudes). Another species, Fannia alpina Pont, 1970, is first recorded from Slovak Republic, and Fannia cothurnata (Loew, 1873) is first recorded from Kazakhstan. An updated key to males of European species of Fannia is presented. A list of Czech and Slovak Fanniidae is appended. One new synonym is established: Fannia lucida Chillcott, 1961 is considered junior synonym of Fannia norvegica Ringdahl, 1934. Altogether two species are first recorded from Bohemia [Fannia cothurnata (Loew, 1873) and Fannia vespertilionis Ringdahl, 1934] and three for Moravia [Fannia alpina Pont, 1970, Fannia conspecta Rudzinski, 2003, and Fannia limbata (Tiensuu, 1938) – this species considered in Central Europe very rare was found in numbers near waters both running and standing in early spring under unusually warm temperature conditions].

Sixty years ago, Willi Hennig last catalogued the Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae and Muscidae fauna of the Juan Fernández Archipelago. This archipelago, composed of three main volcanic islands (Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk and Santa Clara), has many endemic species. We describe Fannia hennigi sp. n. from the Robinson Crusoe Island, and record 11 species in 10 genera of Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae and Muscidae. A key to the identification of all species found in Juan Fernández Archipelago and a table with all species found in the Archipelago are presented, including four new records from Robinson Crusoe Island: Delia platura (Meigen, 1826); Fannia hennigi sp. n.; Lispoides insularis Hennig, 1957 and Schoenomyzina emdeni Hennig, 1955.
