In this study, to determine an effective fungal agent against Dendroctonus micans (Kugelann, 1794) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), which causes significant economic losses in forested areas, Picea orientalis (L.) Link in Artvin between 2021-2022. Dendroctonus micans larvae and adults were collected from the trees, and 18 fungi were isolated from larvae and adult insects. Morphological (infection type, colony morphology, spore form) and molecular (ITS1-5.8S ITS2 gene region) characterization determined that the isolates were Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokin, 1883 (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae), M. robertsii, M. pinghaense and Clonostachys rosea Samuels & Rossman, 1999 (Hypocreales: Bionectriaceae). Isolates M. robertsii (OZM4) and M. pinhaense (OZM9) have been isolated from this pest for the first time. As a result of insecticidal activity tests performed on D. micans larvae and adults of 1x107 spore/ml spore suspension, the larvae, M. anisopliae (OZM2), showed a mortality rate of 92% within 7 days and adults mortality was determined 100% at the end of the experiment, and mycosis rates were found to be consistent with mortality rates. In the beetle family Carabidae, feeding habits are important life history traits that determine their role in ecosystems and suitability as bioindicators. However, they have not been elucidated for most species, especially in the larval stages. Using laboratory‐rearing experiments, this study examined the larval feeding habits of two large carabid species: Lesticus magnus (tribe Pterostichini) and Chlaenius costiger (tribe Chlaeniini). Although previous studies failed to rear these larvae on insect larva diets, the mandible morphology of the first instars described in those studies, together with subsequently obtained knowledge of the relationship between mandible morphology and feeding habits in other carabid larvae, suggests that they are earthworm feeders. Rearing experiments with three types of animal diet (insect larvae, mixed snail and slug, and earthworm diets) showed that as expected, their larvae are earthworm feeders. In L. magnus, although the larvae accepted the mixed snail and slug diet and the earthworm diet, only larvae reared on the earthworm diet reached adulthood. In C. costiger, the larvae accepted only the earthworm diet and reached adulthood. This is the first report of earthworm feeding during the larval stage for the genus Lesticus (tribe Pterostichini) and tribe Chlaeniini. Oak dieback disease caused by the fungus Paecilomyces formosus threatens oak trees in the Zagros forests in western Iran. Various insects, such as wood-infesting beetles (Coleoptera), may play a role in dissemination of P. formosus. We collected larvae and adult insects from branch wood of oak trees with dieback symptoms in the Zagros forests. For larval identification, the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COXI) was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Fungal isolates from wood and insects collected from the sampled oaks were identified by morphology, acid production on creatine sucrose agar (CREA) medium, phylogeny of DNA sequence data for the β-tubulin gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA. To detect P. formosus in larvae and adult insects, we used a nested PCR assay with the species-specific primer pairs PaMF and PaMR. The insects that most often tested positive for P. formosus were larvae of the buprestids Acmaeodera sp. and Chrysobothris affinis, and larvae of the cerambycid Trichoferus campestris. Adults of C. affinis and Calchaenesthes diversicolis (Cerambycidae), which were collected from within their galleries, also tested positive. Beetle larvae of Anthaxia sp. (Buprestidae), Latipalpis plana (Buprestidae), Monochamus sp. (Cerambycidae) and Crypticus gibbulus (Tenebrionidae) also tested positive. Larvae that tested negative for P. formosus were species of Cossidae (Lepidoptera), Elateridae (Coleoptera), Gasteruptiidae (Hymenoptera) and Syrphidae (Diptera). Larval insects use many methods for locomotion. Here we describe a previously unknown jumping behavior in a group of beetle larvae (Coleoptera: Laemophloeidae). We analyze and describe this behavior in Laemophloeus biguttatus and provide information on similar observations for another laemophloeid species, Placonotus testaceus. Laemophloeus biguttatus larvae precede jumps by arching their body while gripping the substrate with their legs over a period of 0.22 ± 0.17s. This is followed by a rapid ventral curling of the body after the larvae releases its grip that launches them into the air. Larvae reached takeoff velocities of 0.47 ± 0.15 m s-1 and traveled 11.2 ± 2.8 mm (1.98 ± 0.8 body lengths) horizontally and 7.9 ± 4.3 mm (1.5 ± 0.9 body lengths) vertically during their jumps. Conservative estimates of power output revealed that some but not all jumps can be explained by direct muscle power alone, suggesting Laemophloeus biguttatus may use a latch-mediated spring actuation mechanism (LaMSA) in which interaction between the larvae's legs and the substrate serves as the latch. MicroCT scans and SEM imaging of larvae did not reveal any notable modifications that would aid in jumping. Although more in-depth experiments could not be performed to test hypotheses on the function of these jumps, we posit that this behavior is used for rapid locomotion which is energetically more efficient than crawling the same distance to disperse from their ephemeral habitat. Patch size is one of the most important factors affecting the distribution and abundance of species, and recent research has shown that patch size is an important niche dimension affecting community structure in aquatic insects. Building on this result, we examined the impact of patch size in conjunction with presence of larval anurans on colonization by aquatic insects. Hyla chrysoscelis (Cope's gray treefrog) larvae are abundant and early colonists in fishless lentic habitats, and these larvae can fill multiple ecological roles. By establishing larvae in mesocosms prior to colonization, we were able to assess whether H. chrysoscelis larvae have priority effects on aquatic insect assemblages. We conducted a series of three experiments in naturally colonized experimental landscapes to test whether (1) H. chrysoscelis larval density affects insect colonization, (2) variation in patch size affects insect colonization, and (3) the presence and larval density of H. chrysoscelis shift colonization of insects between patches of different size. Larval density independently had almost no effect on colonization, while patch size had species‐specific effects consistent with prior work. When larvae and patch size were tested in conjunction, patch size had numerous, often strong, species‐specific effects on colonization; larval density had effects largely limited to the assemblages of colonizing beetles and water bugs, with few effects on individual species. Higher larval densities in large mesocosms shifted some insect colonization to smaller patches, resulting in higher beta diversity among small patches in proximity to high density large mesocosms. This indicates establishing H. chrysoscelis larvae prior to insect colonization can likely create priority effects that slightly shape insect communities. Our results support the importance of patch size in studying species abundances and distributions and also indicate that colonization order plays an important role in determining the communities found within habitat patches. Dectes texanus is an important coleopteran pest of soybeans and cultivated sunflowers in the Midwestern United States that causes yield losses by girdling stems of their host plants. Although sunflower and giant ragweed are primary hosts of D. texanus, they began colonizing soybeans approximately 50 years ago and no reliable management method has been established to prevent or reduce losses by this pest. To identify genes putatively involved when feeding soybean, we compared gene expression of D. texanus third-instar larvae fed soybean to those fed sunflower, giant ragweed, or artificial diet. Dectes texanus larvae differentially expressed 514 unigenes when fed on soybean compared to those fed the other diet treatments. Enrichment analyses of gene ontology terms from up-regulated unigenes in soybean-fed larvae compared to those fed both primary hosts highlighted unigenes involved in oxidoreductase and polygalacturonase activities. Cytochrome P450s, carboxylesterases, major facilitator superfamily transporters, lipocalins, apolipoproteins, glycoside hydrolases 1 and 28, and lytic monooxygenases were among the most commonly up-regulated unigenes in soybean-fed larvae compared to those fed their primary hosts. These results suggest that D. texanus larvae differentially expressed unigenes involved in biotransformation of allelochemicals, digestion of plant cell walls and transport of small solutes and lipids when feeding in soybean. Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus Sm.) is recorded as a larval host of Uracanthus acutus Blackburn for the first time. During 2019-20, U. acutus was reared from E. reticulatus from seven locations around Sydney. Previously, U. acutus was recorded from a range of native and cultivated plants but not previously from E. reticulatus. Larvae ringbark small branches on the main stem and then move through the centre of the branch towards the distal end of the trunk or main branch before returning close to the point of excision to pupate. Lucanus cervus (Linnaeus, 1758) is involved in the Near Threatened (NT) danger category in the IUCN Red List. It plays an important role in the ecosystem, nutrient cycling, and the decomposition process of wood. Its larvae live under or in damp and decaying trees. We designed an equipment to ensure the detection and the long-term monitoring of Lucanus cervus and many other insect larvae that complete their larval stages in a wood tissue without destroying their habitats. The equipment developed is an audio listening device that amplifies the larval sounds. This device was designed as a 4-stage structure with a sensor stage, low and high pass filter stage, voltage gain sound amplifier stage, and output stage. This device was used for the first time in the larvae's natural environment. With this new equipment, listening was performed on decaying trunks in the Amanos Mountains, which are included in the spreading area of Lucanus cervus akbesianus Planet, 1896, located within the borders of Hatay province in June-July 2017. The presence of the larvae of Lucanus cervus akbesianus was detected in oak tree trunks, and sound recording was performed. Accordingly, the larvae made approximately 5 clicks in a series and left a 7-8 second gap between two series. Non-invasive diagnosis of harmful wood-inhabiting organisms is of great importance in order to minimize interventions in valuable wood products and living trees. Here we present two methods, an acoustical and a molecular one, which enable gentle detection of insect larvae in wood and wood products. In parts, both methods have been successfully applied for the analysis of the Asian longhorn beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis, ALB) and appear suitable as early warning systems in the control of quarantine insect pests. The larvae of three species of Agabus s. str. Leach, 1817, A. bifarius (Kirby, 1837), instar III, A. disintegratus (Crotch, 1873), instars I–III, and A. falli (Zimmermann, 1934), instars I–III, are described including for the first time a detailed chaetotaxy analysis of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment and urogomphi. Larvae of A. falli show several unique morphological features that differentiate them from those of the other species of Agabini studied. A provisional parsimony analysis based on 55 larval characteristics of 17 species in seven genera of the subfamily Agabinae was conducted using the program TNT. As a result of this analysis, Agabini was recovered as polyphyletic while Platynectini and Hydrotrupini are deemed monophyletic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hairy rove beetle, Creophilus maxillosus (Linnaeus) (Staphylinidae), is recognized for its use in forensic entomology. However, insufficient developmental data exist for the Central European population of this species. Accordingly, we studied the development of C. maxillosus at ten constant temperatures (10–32.5 °C). Based on these results, linear and nonlinear developmental models were created and validated. We also studied the effect of different homogenous diets (third-instar larvae or puparia of Calliphora sp. Robineau-Desvoidy or Lucilia sp. Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) or mix of first- and second-instar larvae of Necrodes littoralis (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Silphidae)) on the development and mortality of C. maxillosus. Average total development times ranged between 122.21 days at 15 °C and 22.18 days at 30 °C. Beetles reached the adult stage in seven out of ten temperatures (15–30 °C). No beetles reached the adult stage when fed with larvae of N. littoralis; their development times at first and second larval stage were also significantly longer than in other food conditions. When C. maxillosus larvae were fed with blowfly larvae, the highest mortality was observed at the pupal stage, as compared when they were fed with blowfly puparia—at the first larval stage. While validating thermal summation models, the highest age estimation errors were found for beetles bred at 10 and 12.5 °C (between 21 and 43% for all developmental events). Age estimation errors were on average higher for pupation and eclosion than hatching and first and second ecdyses. While validating the models with specimens fed with different diets, the highest errors were recorded for beetles fed with N. littoralis larvae (22% for the first ecdysis and 33% for the second ecdysis) and Lucilia sp. puparia (32% for pupation and 22% for eclosion). Implications for C. maxillosus use in forensic entomology are discussed. Zophobas morio is a tropical darkling beetle which is widely exploited for commercial large-scale insect growing. Outbreaks of a disease may occur causing total devastation of cultures. In the present paper, samples of diseased Z. morio were obtained and used for establishment of a laboratory model as they were found infective to the larvae of the same insect species from another source. It took about 1 month to develop symptoms of acute disease in mid-age larvae and about twice as much when younger larvae were used for infection. Affected larvae perished quickly, and within several days up to 90–100% of the colony could perish. Both in healthy and diseased larvae a virus was detected using PCR with degenerate primers specific for a gene coding for a non-structural protein (ORF3). The sequenced gene fragment (Genbank accession #MN732869) confirmed allocation of the virus to Densoviridae, with maximal similarity of 97.2% to Blatella germanica densovirus-like virus (#JQ320376) and 66.2% to B. germanica densovirus (#AY189948). Genomic DNA samples of Z. morio larvae from an independent colony devoid of symptoms of a disease were also positive for this virus with a slightly different (99.7% sequence similarity to the former sequence of the Z. morio densovirus) genotype (#MN732870). Dastarcus helophoroides (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae) is an effective ectoparasitoid of pine sawyer beetle Monochamus alternatus Hope (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) which is the major median insect for transmission of pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner et Buhrer) Nickle (Aphelenchida: Parasitaphelenchidae). A sensitive and acute olfactory system is extremely essential for newly hatched larva of D. helophoroides to forage for a host. Therefore, we established the transcriptome of newly hatched D. helophoroides larvae and characterized the expression profiles of olfactory genes. We identified 20 transcripts encoding putative odorant binding proteins (OBPs), 11 putative chemosensory proteins (CSPs), 9 putative odorant receptors (ORs), 11 putative ionotropic receptors (IRs), 7 putative gustatory receptors (GRs) and 4 putative sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs) olfactory genes from the transcriptome of newly hatched D. helophoroides larvae. According to the phylogenetic analysis, 3 OBPs (DhelOBP6, DhelOBP14 and DhelOBP19), 1 CSP (DhelCSP11), 1 OR (DhelOrco1), 3 IRs (DhelIR3, DhelIR6 and DhelIR8), 3 GRs (DhelGR2, DhelGR4 and DhelGR5) and 2 SNMPs (DhelSNMP1 and DhelSNMP3) had high similarities with reported Coleopteran species. The highest expressed olfactory gene was DhelCSP3, followed by DhelOBP8 and DhelCSP2. The expression levels of the majority of OR, IR, GR and SNMP genes were low. These results indicate that CSPs and OBPs may play important roles in the olfactory recognition process in newly hatched D. helophoroides larvae. The findings from the present study are helpful in unraveling the profound mystery between D. helophoroides and M. alternatus, as well as improving the parasitism efficiency of D. helophoroides larvae. Background. Red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is one of the most destructive insects for palm trees in the world. However, its genome resources are still in the blank stage, which limits the study of molecular and growth development analysis. Methods. In this study, we used PacBio Iso-Seq and Illumina RNA-seq to first generate transcriptome from three developmental stages of R. ferrugineus (pupa, 7th larva, female and male) to increase our understanding of the life cycle and molecular characteristics of R. ferrugineus. Results. A total of 63,801 nonredundant full-length transcripts were generated with an average length of 2,964 bp from three developmental stages, including the 7th instar larva, pupa, female adult and male adult. These transcripts showed a high annotation rate in seven public databases, with 54,999 (86.20%) successfully annotated. Meanwhile, 2,184 alternative splicing (AS) events, 2,084 transcription factors (TFs), 66,230 simple sequence repeats (SSR) and 9,618 Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) were identified. Carrion is a patchy, nutrient-rich and frequently bulky resource that hosts a complex community of competing organisms. Several insect species have specialized to use carrion for breeding, revealing a specific suite of behavioural adaptations. Larvae of carrion insects regularly aggregate while feeding, frequently forming spectacular larval masses. Here we analysed patterns and mechanisms of collective feeding by larvae of the communally breeding carrion beetle Necrodes littoralis. Using results of laboratory behavioural assays and findings from previous field experiments using pig carcasses we found that: (1) under field conditions N. littoralis larval aggregations were prevalent on large carcasses, during late decomposition stages; (2) under laboratory conditions larvae of all instars, when present on meat, formed stable aggregations; (3) larvae consistently responded to thermal characteristics of a feeding environment, aggregating in the hottest place and following changes in the heat source location, which suggests thermal cues are important for their aggregation; and (4) ground-deposited chemical cues elicited a minor response by the third-instar larvae, which indicates these cues are less important for the aggregation of larval N. littoralis. These findings highlight the prevalence of communal feeding among necrophagous insect larvae, revealing the interspecific and intraspecific diversity of patterns and mechanisms for larval aggregation on carrion. • Larval aggregates of carrion beetle N. littoralis are prevalent on large carcasses. • While aggregating, larvae consistently respond to heat in the environment. • Ground-deposited chemical cues are less important for this aggregation. • Heat and food are key larval aggregation mechanisms in this species. Oxyporinae are a visually attractive and highly specialized mycophagous subfamily of rove beetles (Staphylinidae) with enigmatic origins and a largely unknown evolutionary history. Our knowledge of their immature stages and biology, valuable for solving questions about their phylogeny, is still very fragmentary. Here, we describe for the fi rst time the larval morphology of Oxyporus (s. str.) procerus Kraatz, 1879 and O. (Pseudoxyporus) melanocephalus Kirschenblatt, 1938, both from the Russian Far East. We redescribe the larval morphology of the widespread O. (s. str.) maxillosus Fabricius, 1775 based on material, also from the Russian Far East. All larvae are identifi ed based on the combined evidence from rearing and cox1 barcoding. For O. maxillosus, O. procerus and O. (P.) melanocephalus we provide some new fi eld and laboratory-based data on feeding, mating, oviposition, female brood care, duration of larval development, and behavior. We applied the Atheta-based system of ASHE & WATROUS (1984) to describe and compare the chaetotaxy of these Oxyporus larvae. We extract the most essential comparable data for all species of Oxyporus with known larvae from poorly compatible published larval descriptions with dubious homology assessments for their chaetotaxy. In addition, data on fungal hosts and beetle biology is summarized for the genus and provided for each species. New morphological traits are revealed for the Oxyporus larvae. Signifi cant differences in larval morphology, reproduction behavior and cox1 barcoding region between the subgenera Oxyporus s. str. and Pseudoxyporus Nakane & Sawada, 1956 correspond to the morphological distance between their adults and suggest that they may be potentially elevated to genus rank. The immature stages (egg, mature larva and pupa) of Squamapion atomarium (Kirby, 1808), as well as its development cycle and the phenology of its developmental stages, are described for the first time. The larva and pupa of S. atomarium have typical morphological features of the subfamily Apioninae. Morphological data on the immature stages were compared with the only fully described Squamapion species, S. elongatum (Germar, 1817). The larvae of the two species differ in body size and shape, head shape, setae length, the chaetotaxy of the mouthparts, and individual types of setae on the pronotum and thorax. In the case of the pupa, there are also differences in body size and in the type of setae and chaetotaxy of the head, pronotum, metanotum and abdomen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), quickly established itself as an invasive species in North America after it was first detected near Detroit, Michigan, USA, in 2002. Just 1 yr later, emerald ash borer was introduced accidentally into Maryland, USA, on imported ash nursery stock. After quarantine and eradication efforts failed, a classical biological control program was initiated in Maryland in 2009 with the release of 2 larval parasitoids: Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Spathius agrili Yang (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and 1 egg parasitoid, Oobius agrili Zhang and Huang (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). Timing is critical to the success, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of classical biological control programs where release of parasitoids must coincide temporally with that of susceptible stages of the host. In 2017, periodic field surveys at 2 sites in central Maryland were conducted to assess emerald ash borer phenology using green funnel traps to sample adults, and debarking infested ash trees to sample larval stages. Adult emerald ash borer first appeared in traps on 18 May 2017 (479 growing degree d base 10 [GDD10]), peaked on 15 Jun (823 GDD10), and were absent from 13 Jul (1,301 GDD10) through 12 Oct (2,598 GDD10) when surveys were terminated. Larval sampling in early Aug (1,698 GDD10) found all larval instars present, the most common being the second instar (46%), followed by the third instar (28%), fourth instar (20%), first instar (5%), and prepupal J-shaped larvae (J-larva) (0.5%). J-larvae are so called because after excavating a pupal chamber, the head is bent down 180 degrees to the rest of the body, resembling the shape of the letter J. Larval sampling in late Oct (2,710 GDD10) found J-larvae to be the dominant stage present (92.2%), followed by fourth instar (4.8%), third instar (2.4%), and second instar (0.6%). We found that emerald ash borer was univoltine, and that nearly 50% of emerald ash borer larvae had developed to stages susceptible to parasitism (third and fourth instar) by early Aug (1,698 GDD10). By late Oct (2,710 GDD10), 92% had developed beyond parasitoid susceptible stages (J-larvae). These findings suggest that egg parasitoid releases are best targeted from early May to late Jun at an approximate GDD10 range of 300 and 1,100 with larval parasitoid releases best targeted between 1,400 and 2,500 GDD10. Cryptorrhynchus lapathi (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an important cosmopolitan wood-boring insect pest. Its larval stages damage salicaceous plants and thereby cause serious economic losses to the forest industry. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to record the number, typology, morphology, and distribution of sensilla on the antennae, maxillary and labial palps in the third, fourth, and fifth larval instars of C. lapathi. Two types of sensilla were observed on the antennae: sensilla basiconica (S.b.1) and sensilla twig basiconica (S.tb.1–4). The maxillary palps had three types of sensilla, S.b.2, S.tb. (S.tb.4–6), and sensilla digiformia (S.d.), while two types were found on the labial palps, S.b.2 and S.tb. (S.tb.4–6). The numbers and types of antennal, maxillary and labial palp sensilla remained unchanged in different larval instars, but the length and diameter of sensilla generally increased throughout larval development. Sensilla distributions on the maxillary and labial palps were significantly different in successive instars, but there were no differences on the antennae. We discussed the functions of sensilla in wood-boring behavior. These results may provide a theoretical basis for further studies of feeding behavior and electrophysiology of C. lapathi larvae. The collected nematodes were characterized at the first by morphological properties, then molecular studies were conducted to characterize and identify the isolates based on the following; Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions. Among these isolates, an isolated Rhabditidae family nematode assigned as isolate IRQ.1 which belonged to the Heterorhabditis genus. The phylogenetic relations of Heterorhabditis species were analyzed using the maximum likelihood method. The BLAST analysis base on ITS gene for Iraqi population of nematodes attributes 99% similarities and 96% of query coverage with Rhabditis blumi (DQ121436) which were the highest match in ITS. The mature larva of Sciaphilus asperatus is redescribed and illustrated, and the pupa is described for the first time. Supplements to the identification keys for larvae and pupae of selected Palaearctic Entiminae genera and species are given. Data on the life history, especially oviposition capacity and voltinism, of S. asperatus are provided and discussed, and the number of the six larval instars was confirmed. Although in vivo measurements of larval insects are often performed during developmental studies of necrophilous beetles, their impact on development has not been studied. During measurements insects are taken out of the incubator for a few minutes at room temperature, which may affect the development and eventually the quality of the developmental reference data. Additionally, while being measured larvae are under stress which may have an effect on their development. We conducted an experiment using predatory beetle species Creophilus maxillosus L. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) which often occurs and breeds on large vertebrate carcasses. We tested the hypothesis that multiple, in vivo measurements affect the development of C. maxillosus by increasing its duration and changing adult insect size at emergence. As a consequence, we predicted that the multiple insect measurement protocol will affect the accuracy of age estimates using the resultant reference developmental data. Development of C. maxillosus was studied at 7 constant temperatures. All individuals were inspected for developmental landmarks; half of them were also repeatedly measured and weighed. Measured beetles developed longer than non-measured beetles (e.g. 1.59 days longer at 22.5 °C) and at emergence were distinctly smaller (e.g. 1.5 mm shorter and 22 mg lighter at 22.5 °C). The accuracy of age estimates was greater while using the model for non-measured beetles. These results support the claim that multiple in vivo measurements of insects reduce the quality of resultant developmental data. The measurements were particularly detrimental for the adult insect size. Consequently, particular attention should be paid to isomegalen diagrams which are based on insect length. Our findings indicate that these diagrams, when based on multiple, in vivo measurements of larval beetles, will systematically overestimate their age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The carrion beetle subfamily Silphinae (Coleoptera: Silphidae) contains dominant macroinvertebrates of soil ecosystems in temperate zones. However, their feeding habits, which determine the role of each species in the ecosystem, have not been sufficiently studied. Moreover, although a diet shift from necrophagy on vertebrate carcasses to predatory feeding on invertebrates is known to occur in this subfamily, the processes and mechanisms of this shift have also been inadequately addressed. We examined female fecundity and larval development on various diets in a Silphinae species, Necrophila (Eusilpha) japonica (Motschulsky). The experimental diets included a meat diet and various invertebrate diets, which reflect the 'ancestral' feeding habit in Silphinae, necrophagy, and the 'derivative' feeding habit, predatory feeding. Female fecundity was significantly higher on the meat diet (minced beef) than on an insect larvae diet (mealworms and dipteran larvae) but did not significantly differ from that on an earthworm diet. Larval developmental performance was significantly higher on the earthworm diet than on the meat and insect larvae diets. Our results for larval development were consistent with those of previous stable isotope analyses of the same species, in which isotopic values of larval samples agree with those of hypothetical consumers that utilize earthworms. The consistency of results among different methods indicates that N. japonica larvae are most likely earthworm feeders. In contrast, our results for the female fecundity experiment differed from those of previous stable isotope analyses, in which vertebrate carcasses unlikely serve as the staple diet of adults in the field; thus, the feeding habits of N. japonica adults remain unresolved. Our observations that females and larvae performed best on the meat and earthworm diets, respectively, may indicate that, in Silphinae, the diet shift from necrophagy to predatory habits occurs earlier in larvae than in adults. We examined female fecundity and larval development on various diets in Necrophila (Eusilpha) japonica (Coleoptera: Silphidae, Silphinae) with laboratory rearing experiments. Female fecundity was highest on the minced beef diet, simulating a vertebrate carcass, whereas larvae performed best on the earthworm diet, a model for predatory feeding on invertebrates. The carabid subfamily Paussinae contains many species known to be obligately associated with ants during at least one stage of their life history. Myrmecophilous larvae have been documented for members of the tribe Paussini as well as several genera in the tribes Ozaenini, including Physea and Eustra. Here we describe the first instar larva of Ozaena lemoulti, and find it to be the most highly modified ozaenine larva that we have examined to date. Many structures of the larva suggest that it is a myrmecophile. Unlike all other described ozaenine larvae, which live in burrows that they construct and seal with their terminal disk, the completely unique larval morphology suggests Ozaena has adapted to living without the protection of a burrow and therefore must have a completely different feeding strategy than the typical ambush strategy of burrow dwelling larvae. We hypothesize that Ozaena larvae live in association with ants and use their long legs for running within the nest, and modifications of the mouthparts suggest the larva feeds on soft lightly sclerotized prey, such as ant brood. Our findings support an earlier hypothesis that Ozaena is mymecophilous during the adult stage. Comparisons of the functional anatomy of the eggs, larvae and adult between Ozaena lemoulti and the closely related, non-myrmecophilous general arthropod predator, Goniotropis kuntzeni, provide complementary, yet independent, evidence suggestive of this shift in lifestyle. We also examine and molecularly identify gut contents, providing direct evidence that adult Ozaena exclusively eat Camponotus ants. We conclude that Ozaena represents an independent shift to adopting a life of myrmecophily among beetles classified within the carabid subfamily Paussinae and document the morphological changes at each life history stage associated with the shift to a nest parasite lifestyle. The mature larva and pupa of Graptus triguttatus triguttatus and the mature larva of Peritelus sphaeroides are described for the first time. The larvae of Philopedon plagiatum and Tanymecus palliatus are re-described. Five larval instars were determined in Tanymecus, thereby correcting doubtful data in the literature. The relationship between larval growth, number of larval instars, head width of the mature larva, and the adult weevil is explained using the example of Tanymecus. The nearly constant ratio of subsequent larval instars in head width ratio, termed "growth factor" and derived from Dyar's ratio, is used for the determination of larval instars. In this paper we describe a new species of Cerambycidae of the Genus Brachyta, Subgenus Fasciobrachyta, close to Brachyta balcanica (Hampe, 1870). The new species, very likely associated as larvae with roots of Paeonia officinalis, was collected in the Majella National Park (Abruzzo, Italy) and its phylogenetic position clearly reveals a Transadriatic origin. Platynectes (Gueorguievtes) davidorum sp. nov. is described, including all larval instars, from hygropetric habitats in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, eastern China. The new species can be easily distinguished from all other Asia Platynectes Régimbart, 1879 with dorsally strongly convex habitus, distinctly impressed double reticulation of elytra, short appendages and the shape of median lobe of aedeagus. Collected larvae were successfully associated with adults using a molecular approach and the barcode for the new species is provided as well as the phylogenetic position based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene; they are described and illustrated, with detailed morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphi. The largest South American woodpecker, the Magellanic woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus), as well as its habitat, Nothofagus spp. old-growth forests, are declining throughout their range. We mapped beetle larvae in two lenga (N. pumilio) trees on Navarino Island, Chile, to better understand prey availability and infer what factors might affect woodpecker foraging behavior. We further compared larvae locations with woodpecker foraging holes to infer prey accessibility. We extracted 35 total larvae from Cerambycidae and Lucanidae families and identified one Cerambycidae (Microplophorus magellanicus) and one Lucanidae (Erichius femoralis). Maximum woodpecker excavation depths were 71-90 mm; most larval gallery depths were 51-70 mm. Further research should examine tree characteristics associated with accessible larval prey to enable decision makers to make informed decisions for Magellanic woodpeckers' management and conservation. 1. Animals often have to choose between multiple food sources in their habitat, and these potentially complex decisions have a large impact on their fitness. Among other factors, previous experience with an alternative resource can significantly increase subsequent preference for the resource ('induction of preference'). 2. Induction of resource preference is particularly relevant in spatially or temporally heterogeneous habitats. Although most mobile species – especially generalists – probably frequently encounter habitat heterogeneity, the impact of preference induction on individual behaviour and fitness in heterogeneous habitats is poorly understood. This study analysed larval preference induction in wheat‐adapted generalist red flour beetles, Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), under three types of habitat heterogeneity. 3. First, the induction of preference for novel cereal flours under temporal heterogeneity was analysed, exposing larvae to new resources during development. Larvae preferred a new resource if they experienced it recently, but the magnitude of induction varied across resources. 4. Specific induction for a homogenous mix of wheat and a novel resource was also observed, with larvae preferring the mix over either pure resource. 5. To analyse induction under spatial heterogeneity, beetle eggs were placed in one of two alternative resource patches and the preference of emerged larvae was tested. Hatching into a novel resource did not always induce preference. 6. Finally, it was found that induction of preference for new resources could be maladaptive for larval development. In sum, this work demonstrates that experience‐based plasticity of larval resource choice may strongly impact larval preference and fitness in heterogeneous habitats. Under temporal heterogeneity, larvae preferred a new resource if they experienced it recently. In Western Europe, the diving beetle Dytiscus latissimus (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) has become rare and went extinct in several countries during the last century. This study investigated whether larval development rate, metabolism and feeding ecology differ between D. latissimus and the congeneric D. lapponicus to explore factors explaining its decline.During instar I and II, D. latissimus larvae developed faster and gained more weight than D. lapponicus larvae. In accordance, D. latissimus larvae had higher oxygen consumption rates than D. lapponicus larvae, which signifies a greater energy expenditure.Food preference tests showed that D. latissimus larvae strongly prefer caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) with early instars being obligatory dependent on caddisfly larvae for their development. Only instar III larvae readily fed on alternative prey items. In contrast, D. lapponicus larvae had a broader diet and even rejected caddisfly larvae.Based on field observations, availability of caddisfly larvae strongly declined before the end of the larval development of D. latissimus, suggesting that time constraints on food availability limit completion of larval development.Our results suggest that food limitation during (early) larval stages is a possible bottle‐neck for this species, potentially explaining its disappearance from former localities. Promoting caddisfly larvae in the vicinity of D. latissimus oviposition sites, may possibly safeguard the present distribution of D. latissimus and support the species recovery. Water-filled tree holes are abundant microhabitats in forests worldwide and are inhabited by specialized communities of invertebrates. Despite their importance, the temporal dynamics of communities within and between years are largely unknown. Here, I present a case study on the phenology of insect larvae in two holes in a beech tree (lower and upper canopy) located in southern Germany over a period of three years. I asked whether water temperature and the characteristics of insect larvae at the community and population levels are similar in periodicity every year and whether they differ in the lower and upper canopy. The water temperature in tree holes differed greatly from air temperature, and this effect was more pronounced in the lower than in the upper canopy, which resulted in a lower probability of drying out occurring in the lower canopy. This was associated with a higher species richness in the lower canopy and greater abundance of drought tolerant species in the upper canopy. There was a significant periodicity in larval abundance, biomass, species richness and body size distribution of abundant species in both tree holes, but it was not seasonal. This result indicates that unpredictable drying out of tree holes are more important drivers of tree hole community dynamics than changes in water temperature. The community of larvae in the tree hole in the upper canopy lagged behind that in the lower canopy, which indicates that most species mainly colonize the more stable microhabitats in the lower canopy. Hopefully this case study will encourage future larger-scale phenological studies to test (1) whether the patterns observed in this study can be generalized over larger spatial scales and (2) the relative importance of abiotic and biotic drivers of the dynamics of communities in tree holes. The primary and secondary chaetotaxy of the head capsule and head appendages of the fi rst and third larval instars of Oosternum costatum (LeConte, 1855) (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae: Sphaeridiinae, Megasternini) are described for the fi rst time. Morphometric characters derived from the head capsule and mouthparts are included, together with detailed illustrations of all characters. The morphology and chaetotaxy of these larvae is compared to that of other larvae of the tribe Megasternini, confirming that chaetotaxy is a useful source of characters for phylogenetic analyses. In this contribution we describe and illustrate for the fi rst time, detailed morphology and chaetotaxy of the last instar larva and the pupa of Ora depressa (Fabricius, 1801), and provide diagnostic characters and information on its biology. The last instar larva of O. depressa exhibits the characters traditionally recognized as diagnostic of the genus, i.e. the tip of the mandible obtuse, and the fourth maxillary palpomere long, almost as long as third palpomere. Ora depressa is characterized by a broadly elliptical body, which is widest at the metanotum, being brownish testaceous in color with several brown spots, having the dorsal surface mostly covered with numerous grooved scale-like setae and also several ungrooved scale-like setae, hair-like setae, club-like setae and pore-like sensilla distributed in a specific pattern, and the femur and tibiotarsus bearing a row of natatorial setae. The last instar larva of Ora depressa can be distinguished from those of the other known species of the genus by lobes of clypeolabrum being as long as wide and socket bristles with 2-6 inner teeth. The pupa of O. depressa differs from those of the other known species of the genus in the absence of pronotal horns and by the place where pupation occurs. Ora depressa pupates underwater, hanging from water's surface with the aid of the laterally expanded pronotum which bears hydrophobic setation along the lateral margins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the abundance of plants that benefit from fire in Mediterranean ecosystems, little is known about the possible presence of fire-favoured insects (other than bark beetles). For two years we sampled invertebrates after two large wildfires in eastern Spain and demonstrate that two flower beetle species, Protaetia morio and P. oblonga (Cetoniidae), show a pyrophilous behaviour. These beetles were much more numerous after the fires than in unburnt plots around the fire perimeter; in addition, these species tended to increase in number with the distance from the fire perimeter and with fire recurrence, especially P. morio. These results were maintained for the two postfire years sampled. The results for the beetles do not support the hypothesis of postfire colonization, but that local populations survived the fire as eggs or larvae protected in the soil (endogenous persistence). We propose that the increase in population size (compared with unburnt zones) could be driven by the reduction of their predator populations, as vertebrates that feed on these beetles were disfavoured by fire. That is, the results suggest that these flower beetle species benefit from fire because fire disrupts antagonistic interactions with their predators (predation release hypothesis). Much amaranth ( Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) is produced in the State of Puebla, Mexico. Considering the increase in agricultural production, there has been an increase in area devoted to the crop, favoring conditions and increasing pests including the white grub complex that damages it. The objective of this work was to determine the species of the white grub complex associated with cultivation of amaranth in the State of Puebla, Mexico, as well as to develop a dichotomous key for identification of larvae to species found in the amaranth crop. In total, 2,330 larvae in two families, two subfamilies, eight genera, and 23 species were collected. The genus Phyllophaga was most common at the study area. However, the amaranth-producing zone in the State of Puebla also included genera such as Euphoria and Strigoderma that are saprophagous. Determination of insect species and their instars, occurring on human remains, is important information that allows us to use insects for estimation of postmortem interval and detect possible manipulation with the body. However, larvae of many common species can be identified only by molecular methods, which is not always possible. The instar determination is even more challenging, and qualitative characters that would allow a more precise identification are mostly unknown. Thanatophilus rugosus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a common necrophagous beetle in the whole Palaearctic region from Europe to Japan. The species is often encountered on corpses of large vertebrates including humans, and its potential to become a useful bioindicator for forensic entomology is therefore high. Adults can be easily distinguished from other species; however, larvae were never thoroughly described to allow species and instar identification. The aim of this study was to provide reliable morphological characters that would allow species and instar identification of T. rugosus larvae. The material for morphological study was obtained from rearing under controlled conditions (20 °C and 12:12 h of light/dark period), and specimens that were not studied morphologically were allowed to complete their development. Quantitative and qualitative morphological characters for instar and species identification are described and illustrated. Abstract: Xylotrechus arvicola is a pest of grape in some vine‐producing regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Biological parameters and relationships (fecundity and percent fertility of eggs in relationship to body size) of females obtained in the laboratory and captured in vineyards were studied. In laboratory conditions, the mean developmental time of larvae ranged from 384 to 392 days and pupal stage varied between 12 to 14 days. Body size (BS) of X. arvicola females was significantly bigger than males. Fecundity was greater in the laboratory (147 eggs) than in the field (50 eggs) females, but the percent fertility of the laboratory eggs was lower (16 eggs). Laboratory females showed a bigger relationship between the production of eggs and BS than females captured in vineyards. Wild females (PDO Ribera del Duero and Tierra de León) had a positive relationship between the percent fertility of eggs and the BS. No correlation between the percent fertility of eggs and the BS was displayed by females captured in PDO Toro, but these females had a higher percent fertility (53 eggs) than the others PDO's. These biological parameters and relationships studied suggest that the artificial diet may lack certain essential nutrients that vine varieties can provide that favor the fertility of eggs. This explains why wild females have the potential to become a problem pest in the Tempranillo grape variety, with bilateral cordon and bush vines training systems that have the highest incidence of this cerambycid. Abstract: Previous work revealed that Harmonia axyridisPallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Beijing, China, were capable of regenerating a forelimb amputated in the fourth instar; 75% of surviving individuals fully regenerated the limb during pupation. In this study, we tested a population of H. axyridis invasive in North America and found that virtually 100% of beetles surviving the operation successfully regenerated the limb. Ablated/regenerated beetles spent longer in pupation, and emerging females were smaller than controls. However, reproductive success was unaffected in all pairwise crosses of control/regenerated adults; there were no differences in pre‐oviposition period, the time required to produce 10 clutches, 10‐day fecundity, or the fertility of eggs, whereas ablated/regenerated parents paid a developmental cost, their progeny obtained benefits. Offspring of crosses that included a regenerated parent tended to have faster larval development than the control cross, although not all were significantly different from controls. However, when either or both parents were ablated and regenerated, their daughters were heavier than controls at emergence. Limb regeneration during pupation appears to activate a physiological cascade which increases the magnitude of beneficial parental effects normally conferred to progeny, possibly via pleiotropic effects. The invasive North American H. axyridis population appears to have higher regeneration capacity than the Chinese population tested previously, although how regeneration capacity might be associated with invasiveness remains unclear. Limb regeneration ability may be a side effect of selection on other traits that confer high fitness under either natural or sexual selection, as it seems unlikely to confer fitness benefits directly in this species. Abstract: Terrestrial larvae of Scirtidae were found in southern South America (Chile) for the first time. The morphology of the larvae is described in detail and compared with terrestrial larvae known from Borneo, New Zealand and Australia. Special attention is paid to the prothoracic sclerites, which were examined for the first time in the family and compared with selected genera of Scirtidae. Large presternal sclerites seem to be a typical feature of terrestrial larvae of Scirtidae. Immature stages of Laccobius (Laccobius) kunashiricus Shatrovskiy, 1984 are described based on specimens reared from adults collected in the fi eld. The egg-case, all larval instars and pupa are described in detail, including primary and secondary chaetotaxy of the larval head. The biology of the species was observed and is briefl y discussed. Six new species in the genus Tmesisternus Latreille 1829 have been discovered. Three of the new species are found in Papua New Guinea and three in Papua, Indonesia. Improving the data of the Italian host list of Tachinidae, Dinera ferina (Fallen) is confirmed to be a parasitoid of larvae of the two Italian Platycerus species, Platycerus caprea (De Geer) and Platycerus caraboides (L.) (Coleoptera Lucanidae). In 2015, 2016 and 2017, larvae, puparia and adults of the tachinid fly were studied in field, semi-field and laboratory conditions. The mature larva of the parasitoid was almost as big as its host, and showed the posterior spiracles from the host cuticle. The emergence from the host took only a few seconds. Platycerus pupae were not involved in D. ferina parasitism. Pupation occurred outside the host remains, from a third instar Platycerus larva. In semi-field and laboratory conditions, pupal duration was recorded to be 23.8 ± 7.0 (mean ± S.D.) days long. The presence of soft wood and frass near the puparium seemed to be necessary for the freshly emerged adult of D. ferina, to leave the wood habitat. Their adults were observed mainly in May, with few individuals found in April, June or September. In the field, the parasitism rate on P. caraboides amounted to 23.7%, with differences among collecting provinces and sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dastarcus helophoroides Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae) is an effective predatory beetle of larvae and pupae of several cerambycid beetles including Monochamus alternatus and Anoplophora glabripennis. Electroantennography (EAG) and a dynamic two-choice olfactometer were respectively used to measure the antennal and behavioral responses of both sexes to selected volatile compounds. Female and male D. helophoroides exhibited similar EAG and behavioral responses. Significant dose-dependent EAG responses in both sexes were elicited by nonanal, octanal, cis-3-hexenol, 3-carene, (R)-(+)-α-pinene, (S)-(-)-α-pinene, (R)-(+)-limonene and (S)-(-)-limonene. Female and male beetles were repelled at high concentration by cis-3-hexenol and (S)-(-)-limonene, respectively. Both sexes of D. helophoroides were significantly attracted to nonanal, cis-3-hexenol, 3-carene and (R)-(+)-limonene even at low concentrations. These compounds might be used either individually or in mixtures for developing biological control methods to attract this predatory beetle into forest stands threatened by cerambycid beetles. Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus (Olivier) and E. brandti (Harold) are two wood boring pests of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (tree of heaven) and the variety Ailanthus altissima var. Qiantouchun. These beetles attack healthy trees and bore into roots and trunks during the larval stage. We studied the typology, distribution and morphostructure of the sensilla on the antennae, maxillary palps and labial palps of E. scrobiculatus and E. brandti larvae using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed the following: (i) the antennae of the two weevil larvae had two types of sensilla, sensilla basiconica (S.b.1 and S.b.2) and sensilla twig basiconica (S.tb.1-S.tb.3), with S.tb.4 observed only on the antennae of E. brandti larvae; (ii) the maxillary palps had three types of sensilla, S.b.2, S.tb. (S.tb.2, S.tb.3 and S.tb.5) and digitiform sensilla; (iii) the labial palps had two types of sensilla, S.b.2 and S.tb. (S.tb.2, S.tb.3 and S.tb.5); (iv) the quantity and distribution of sensilla on the antennae, maxillary palps and labial palps remained constant between E. scrobiculatus and E. brandti larvae; and (v) sensilla basiconica had distinct sidewall pores, an apical pore was observed on sensilla twig basiconica, and digitiform sensilla were oval in shape, with a distinct apical pore. Based on the microstructure of the cuticle wall and dendrite, we hypothesized that these sensilla functioned as olfactory, gustatory and hygro-/thermo-receptors, respectively. We discuss the relationships among types of sensilla and the types of damage caused by the larvae inside the host tree to understand olfactory and gustatory receptor mechanisms. Mature larva and pupa of Larinus vulpes (Olivier, 1807) (Curculionidae: Lixinae: Lixini) are morphologically described for the first time and compared with known larvae and pupae of other Larinus species. Very high counts of larval body setae (pronotum with more than 25 setae and postdorsum on meso- and metathorax and also on abdominal segments I-VII with more than 12 setae) are characteristic features of the nominotypical subgenus Larinus. The biology of the species was studied in Ukraine. Echinops ruthenicus and E. sphaerocephalus were identified as host plants of both larvae and adults of this weevil based on the present research in Ukraine, which shows probably oligophagous. Overwintering beetles emerged at the end of May or earlier, then feeding and mating on the host plants. The highest level of adult activity was observed at the end of June. Larvae were endophagous within the flower heads. In July and August, the larvae pupated within inflorescences in a pupation cell. Adults exited the cells at the end of August and did not hibernate on the host plants. Sometimes, larvae and imagines of a new generation were found outside the flower heads in chambers constructed on the stems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efforts to document species of longhorned beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) occurring in Tennessee have not been updated since 1973. To address this knowledge gap, institutional, research, and private collections in Tennessee were reviewed to provide faunal distribution assessments and seasonal activity data for the cerambycid beetle species active in Tennessee. Examinations of 9,918 specimens and records yielded a list of 230 cerambycid beetle species within 5 subfamilies. Twenty-seven species are reported as new state records from Tennessee. Adult seasonal activity data that were recorded on specimen labels are presented. Where available, notes on collection method, adult resources, and larval host plants are provided for species within a supplementary table. Supplemental figures report the distribution for species collected across the state and from 85 of the 95 Tennessee counties, as well as the ecoregions from which each species is reported. The bias-corrected Chao1 species richness estimator predicts another 11 species remain to be identified across the state. Future collection efforts in the Central Appalachian, Mississippi Alluvial and Valley Loess Plains, Southeastern Plains, and western portions of the Interior Plateau ecoregions could yield additional new state records. Developmental host and adult resource plants, collection methods, as well as regional collection notes from adjacent states are discussed for several additional candidate longhorned beetle species.
