The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic activity of bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (BPMA) copper complexes incorporating olefinic pendent arms are reported. Four copper(I) and four copper(II) complexes were synthesized employing four different counterions [chloride (Cl−), perchlorate (ClO4−), trifluoromethanesulfonate (CF3SO3−), and tetraphenylborate (BPh4−)]. The counterions used ranged from coordinating (Cl−) to non-coordinating (BPh4−), producing different coordination modes in respective complexes. Solid state results obtained for the copper(I) complex incorporating the non-coordinating (BPh4−) counterion displayed an associative bond between the metal center and the C C group in the olefinic arm of a neighboring complex. This interaction led to augmentation of the C C bond due to back-bonding from the metal center. Five solid state structures were obtained for the copper(II) complexes with two also displaying intermolecular associative bonding between olefinic pendent arms and the metal center. X-ray crystallography studies showed that the olefinic arm motifs incorporated were hemilabile. Solution studies indicated that the copper complexes had some inherent reducing power and could be potential candidates for use as catalysts in atom transfer radical processes. However, only moderate conversions and yields were obtained in atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction studies performed utilizing the copper complexes due to the presence of a competing reaction.

The crystal structure of disodium hydrogen citrate sesquihydrate has been solved and refined using laboratory X-ray single-crystal diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques., The crystal structure of disodium hydrogen citrate sesquihydrate, 2Na2 +·C6H6O7 2−·1.5H2O, has been solved and refined using laboratory X-ray single-crystal diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. The asymmetric unit contains two independent hydrogen citrate anions, four sodium cations and three water molecules. The coordination polyhedra of the cations (three with a coordination number of six, one with seven) share edges to form isolated 8-rings. The un-ionized terminal carb­oxy­lic acid groups form very strong hydrogen bonds to non-coordinating O atoms, with O⋯O distances of 2.46 Å.

Zerovalent group 6 dinitrogen phosphine complexes react with 3,3-diphenylcyclopropene to give vinylcarbyne hydride complexes that have been characterized crystallographically. Computational studies indicate that the observed products resulted from the α-migration and rearrangement of an initially formed vinylcarbene.

Solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) has recently emerged as an attractive strategy for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are unobtainable via traditional synthetic pathways. Herein we present the first example of selective SALE in which only the benzimiadazolate-containing linkers in a series of mixed-linker zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-69, -78, and -76) are replaced. The resultant materials (SALEM-10, SALEM-10b, and SALEM-11, respectively) are isostructural to the parent framework and in each case contain trifluoromethyl moieties. We therefore evaluated each of these materials for their hydrophobicity in condensed and gas phases. We expect that selective SALE will significantly facilitate the design of improved, and potentially complex, MOF materials with new and unusual properties.

The compound Th2GeSe5 has been synthesized by the reaction of the elements at 1273 K. From a single-crystal study Th2GeSe5 crystallizes in the Ba5Si3 structure type with four formula units in the space group D84h−P4/ncc of the tetragonal system in a cell with dimensions a=7.4968(4) A and c=13.6302(9) A at 100(2) K. From optical absorption measurements Th2GeSe5 is found to have an optical band gap of 1.92 eV (indirect) or 1.98 eV (direct), consistent with its red color. Th2GeSe5 is a wide gap semiconductor, as indicated by its electrical resistivity at 298 K of 4.37(2)×109 Ω cm measured on a single crystal.

A Cu–carborane-based metal–organic framework (MOF), NU-135, which contains a quasi-spherical para-carborane moiety, has been synthesized and characterized. NU-135 exhibits a pore volume of 1.02 cm3/g and a gravimetric BET surface area of ca. 2600 m2/g, and thus represents the first highly porous carborane-based MOF. As a consequence of the unique geometry of the carborane unit, NU-135 has a very high volumetric BET surface area of ca. 1900 m2/cm3. CH4, CO2, and H2 adsorption isotherms were measured over a broad range of pressures and temperatures and are in good agreement with computational predictions. The methane storage capacity of NU-135 at 35 bar and 298 K is ca. 187 vSTP/v. At 298 K, the pressure required to achieve a methane storage density comparable to that of a compressed natural gas (CNG) tank pressurized to 212 bar, which is a typical storage pressure, is only 65 bar. The methane working capacity (5–65 bar) is 170 vSTP/v. The volumetric hydrogen storage capacity at 55 bar and 77 K is 49 g/L. T...

Herein we report a new class of hemilabile ligands with boron-dipyrromethene (Bodipy) fluorophores that, when complexed to Pt(II), can signal changes in coordination mode through changes in their fluorescence. The ligands consist of phosphino-amine or phosphino-thioether coordinating moieties linked to the Bodipy's meso carbon via a phenylene spacer. Interestingly, this new class of ligands can be used to signal both ligand displacement and chelation reactions in a fluorescence "turn-on" fashion through the choice of weakly binding heteroatom in the hemilabile moiety, generating up to 10-fold fluorescence intensity increases. The Pt(II) center influences the Bodipy emission efficiency by regulating photoinduced electron transfer between the fluorophore and its meso substituent. The rates at which the excited Bodipy-species generate singlet oxygen upon excitation suggest that the heavy Pt(II) center also influences Bodipy's emission efficiency by affecting intersystem crossing from the Bodipy excited singlet to excited triplet states. This signaling strategy provides a quantitative read-out for changes in coordination mode and potentially will enable the design of new molecular systems for sensing and signal amplification.

Mo(0) dinitrogen complexes bearing electron-rich mono- and bidentate phosphines can be synthesized in good yields from inexpensive and readily accessible MoCl(5) via a one-step mild reduction with Mg metal. trans-[(N(2))(2)Mo(PMePh(2))(PPh(CH(2)CH(2)PPh(2))(2))] can also be obtained via this strategy. However, in the presence of tri- and tetradentate ligands that are sterically restrictive, the analogous reduction leads to either (η(6)-arene) formation or [Mo(multidentate phosphine)(m)](n) oligomer complexes that have no dinitrogen ligands. One such η(6)-arene complex, where the Mo(0) center is ligated by 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane, was isolated and characterized via X-ray crystallography.

A series of metallosalen-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been prepared by the post-synthesis modification of Mn(III)SO-MOF, a Mn(3+)(salen)-based MOF. Treatment of Mn(III)SO-MOF with H(2)O(2) effects the removal of the Mn(3+) ions from the salen struts, which can then be remetalated with a variety of metal precursors to form isostructural MSO-MOF materials. The presence of the new metallosalen struts in MSO-MOF was fully confirmed by ICP-OES, MALDI-TOF MS, PXRD, and TGA. Furthermore, the remetalated Mn(II)SO-MOF material displays similar catalytic activity and porosity to the parent MOF.

The halide-induced ligand rearrangement reaction (HILR) has been employed to provide selective and exclusive in situ formation of heteroligated Rh(I), Pd(II), and Pt(II) complexes with bidentate phosphino-chalcoether ligands. To gain insights on the nature of this unique reaction, we explored this process via the stepwise addition of bidentate phosphino-chalcoether (P, X; X = S or Se) and relevant monodentate phosphine ligands with a Pt(II) metal precursor. The corresponding monoligated complexes were obtained in quantitative yields by reacting 1 equiv of a P, X bidentate ligand with Pt(II) and were fully characterized via single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and heteronuclear ((31)P, (77)Se, and (195)Pt) NMR spectroscopy in solution. These species were further reacted with a second equivalent of either a bidentate ligand or the monodentate ethyl diphenylphosphine ligand, resulting in the clean formation of the heteroligated species or, in the case of the monodentate ligand with an electron-withdrawing bidentate ligand, a mixture of products. On the basis of competitive exchange reactions between these heteroligated, homoligated, and monoligated complexes, we conclude that ligand chelation plays a crucial role in the Pt(II) HILR. The in situ preferable formation of the stable monoligated complex allows for ligand sorting to occur in these systems. In all cases where the heteroligated product results, the driving force to these species is ligand chelation.

The Ru(II) compounds [Ru(bpy)(2)(mcbH)](2+) and [Ru(bpy)(2)(dafo)](2+), bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine where mcbH is 3-(CO(2)H)-2,2'-bipyridine and dafo is 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one, were synthesized, characterized, and anchored to nanocrystalline mesoporous TiO(2) thin films for excited state and interfacial electron transfer studies. X-ray crystallographic studies of [Ru(bpy)(2)(mcbH)](PF(6))(Cl) revealed a long Ru-N distance to the unsubstituted pyridine ligand of mcbH. Reaction of [Ru(bpy)(2)(dafo)](2+) with TiO(2) thin films resulted in interfacial chemistry. The IR, (1)H NMR, UV-vis, and photoluminescence spectral data indicated a room-temperature ring-opening reaction of the dafo ligand of [Ru(bpy)(2)(dafo)](2+) that ultimately yielded a carboxylate group in the 3-position of bipyridine anchored to TiO(2). Comparative reactions of [Ru(bpy)(2)(mcbH)](2+) with TiO(2) were performed and support this conclusion. In regenerative photoelectrochemical solar cells with 0.5 M LiI/0.05 M I(2) in acetonitrile, photocurrent action spectra were observed for both sensitized materials. The incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) was significantly lower for Ru(bpy)(2)(dafo)/TiO(2), behavior attributed to a lower excited-state injection yield.

The nature of the ligand is an important aspect of controlling the structure and reactivity in coordination chemistry. In connection with our study of heme-copper-oxygen reactivity relevant to cytochrome c oxidase dioxygen-reduction chemistry, we compare the molecular and electronic structures of two high-spin heme-peroxo-copper [Fe(III)O(2)(2-)Cu(II)](+) complexes containing N(4) tetradentate (1) or N(3) tridentate (2) copper ligands. Combining previously reported and new resonance Raman and EXAFS data coupled to density functional theory calculations, we report a geometric structure and more complete electronic description of the high-spin heme-peroxo-copper complexes 1 and 2, which establish mu-(O(2)(2-)) side-on to the Fe(III) and end-on to Cu(II) (mu-eta(2):eta(1)) binding for the complex 1 but side-on/side-on (mu-eta(2):eta(2)) mu-peroxo coordination for the complex 2. We also compare and summarize the differences and similarities of these two complexes in their reactivity toward CO, PPh(3), acid, and phenols. The comparison of a new X-ray structure of mu-oxo complex 2a with the previously reported 1a X-ray structure, two thermal decomposition products respectively of 2 and 1, reveals a considerable difference in the Fe-O-Cu angle between the two mu-oxo complexes ( angleFe-O-Cu = 178.2 degrees in 1a and angleFe-O-Cu = 149.5 degrees in 2a). The reaction of 2 with 1 equiv of an exogenous nitrogen-donor axial base leads to the formation of a distinctive low-temperature-stable, low-spin heme-dioxygen-copper complex (2b), but under the same conditions, the addition of an axial base to 1 leads to the dissociation of the heme-peroxo-copper assembly and the release of O(2). 2b reacts with phenols performing H-atom (e(-) + H(+)) abstraction resulting in O-O bond cleavage and the formation of high-valent ferryl [Fe(IV)=O] complex (2c). The nature of 2c was confirmed by a comparison of its spectroscopic features and reactivity with those of an independently prepared ferryl complex. The phenoxyl radical generated by the H-atom abstraction was either (1) directly detected by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy using phenols that produce stable radicals or (2) indirectly detected by the coupling product of two phenoxyl radicals.

The interactions of nitrogen monoxide (*NO; nitric oxide) with transition metal centers continue to be of great interest, in part due to their importance in biochemical processes. Here, we describe *NO((g)) reductive coupling chemistry of possible relevance to that process (i.e., nitric oxide reductase (NOR) biochemistry), which occurs at the heme/Cu active site of cytochrome c oxidases (CcOs). In this report, heme/Cu/*NO((g)) activity is studied using 1:1 ratios of heme and copper complex components, (F(8))Fe (F(8) = tetrakis(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrinate(2-)) and [(tmpa)Cu(I)(MeCN)](+) (TMPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine). The starting point for heme chemistry is the mononitrosyl complex (F(8))Fe(NO) (lambda(max) = 399 (Soret), 541 nm in acetone). Variable-temperature (1)H and (2)H NMR spectra reveal a broad peak at delta = 6.05 ppm (pyrrole) at room temperature (RT), which gives rise to asymmetrically split pyrrole peaks at 9.12 and 8.54 ppm at -80 degrees C. A new heme dinitrosyl species, (F(8))Fe(NO)(2), obtained by bubbling (F(8))Fe(NO) with *NO((g)) at -80 degrees C, could be reversibly formed, as monitored by UV-vis (lambda(max) = 426 (Soret), 538 nm in acetone), EPR (silent), and NMR spectroscopies; that is, the mono-NO complex was regenerated upon warming to RT. (F(8))Fe(NO)(2) reacts with [(tmpa)Cu(I)(MeCN)](+) and 2 equiv of acid to give [(F(8))Fe(III)](+), [(tmpa)Cu(II)(solvent)](2+), and N(2)O((g)), fitting the stoichiometric *NO((g)) reductive coupling reaction: 2*NO((g)) + Fe(II) + Cu(I) + 2H(+) --N(2)O((g)) + Fe(III) + Cu(II) + H(2)O, equivalent to one enzyme turnover. Control reaction chemistry shows that both iron and copper centers are required for the NOR-type chemistry observed and that, if acid is not present, half the *NO is trapped as a (F(8))Fe(NO) complex, while the remaining nitrogen monoxide undergoes copper complex promoted disproportionation chemistry. As part of this study, [(F(8))Fe(III)]SbF(6) was synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, along with EPR (77 K: g = 5.84 and 6.12 in CH(2)Cl(2) and THF, respectively) and variable-temperature NMR spectroscopies. These structural and physical properties suggest that at RT this complex consists of an admixture of high and intermediate spin states.

Reaction of nitrogen monoxide with a copper(I) complex possessing a tridentate alkylamine ligand gives a Cu(I)–(·NO) adduct, which when exposed to dioxygen generates a peroxynitrite (O=NOO−)–Cu(II) species. This undergoes thermal transformation to produce a copper(II) nitrito (NO2 –) complex and 0.5 mol equiv O2. In the presence of a substituted phenol, the peroxynitrite complex effects oxidative coupling, whereas addition of chloride ion to dissociate the peroxynitrite moiety instead leads to phenol ortho nitration. Discussions include the structures (including electronic description) of the copper–nitrosyl and copper–peroxynitrite complexes and the formation of the latter, based on density functional theory calculations and accompanying spectroscopic data.

The role of charge density matching in the formation of templated molybdates under mild hydrothermal conditions was investigated through the use of a series of structurally related amines: piperazine, 1,4-dimethylpiperazine, 2,5-dimethylpiperazine and 2,6-dimethylpiperazine. A series of reactions was conducted in which the relative mole fractions of each component were fixed at 2.5 MoO3:1 amine:330 H2O:2 H2SO4 in order to isolate the effects of the amine, the only variation between reactions was the structure of the amine. Four distinct polyoxomolybdates anions were observed, ranging from zero-dimensional β-[Mo8O26]4− molecular anions to [Mo3O10]n2n− and [Mo8O26]n4n− chains and [Mo5O16]n2n− layers. The primary influence over the structure of the molybdate anion is charge density matching with the protonated amine, which was quantified through surface area approximations based upon both calculated molecular surfaces and polyhedral representations of each anion. Secondary influences include amine symmetry and hydrogen-bonding preferences. The synthesis and characterization of two new compounds are reported. A substantial oxidative N-debenzylation reaction along with PhCHO formation occurs from a hydroperoxo-copper(II) complex that has a dibenzylamino substrate (N(CH 2Ph) 2 appended as a substituent on one pyridyl group of its tripodal tetradentate TMPA (also TPA, (2-pyridylmethyl)amine)) ligand framework. During the course of the (L (N(CH 2 ) (Ph) 2 ))Cu (II)( (-)OOH) reactivity, the formation of a substrate and a (-)OOH-derived (an oxygen atom) alkoxo Cu (II)( (-)OR) complex occurs. The observation that the same Cu (II)( (-)OR) species occurs from Cu (Iota)/PhIO chemistry suggests the possibility that a copper-oxo (cupryl) reactive intermediate forms during the alkoxo species formation; new ESI-MS data provide further support for this high-valent intermediate. A net H atom abstraction chemistry is proposed on the basis of the kinetic isotope effect studies provided here and the previously published study for a closely related Cu (II)( (-)OOH) species incorporating dimethylamine (N(CH 3) 2) as the internal substrate; the Cu (Iota)/PhIO reactivity with similar isotope effect results provides further support. The reactivity of these chemical systems closely resembles the proposed oxidative N-dealkylation mechanisms that are effected by the copper monooxygenases, dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DbetaM) and peptidylglycine- alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM).

The preference for the formation of a particular Cu 2O 2 isomer coming from (ligand)-Cu (I)/O 2 reactivity can be regulated with the steric demands of a TMPA (tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) derived ligand possessing 6-pyridyl substituents on one of the three donor groups of the tripodal tetradentate ligand. When this substituent is an -XHR group (X = N or C) the traditional Cu (I)/O 2 adduct forms a (mu-1,2)peroxodicopper(II) species ( A). However, when the substituent is the slightly bulkier XR 2 moiety {aryl or NR 2 (R not equal H)}, a bis(mu-oxo)dicopper(III) structure ( C) is favored. The reactivity of one of the bis(mu-oxo)dicopper(III) species, [{(6tbp)Cu (III)} 2(O (2-)) 2] (2+) ( 7-O 2 ) (6tbp = (6- (t)Bu-phenyl-2-pyridylmethyl)bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine), was probed, and for the first time, exogenous toluene or ethylbenzene hydrocarbon oxygenation reactions were observed. Typical monooxygenase chemistry occurred: the benzaldehyde product includes an 18-O atom for toluene/ 7- (1) (8)O 2 reactivity, and a H-atom abstraction by 7-O 2 is apparent from study of its reactions with ArOH substrates, as well as the determination of k H/ k D approximately 7 in the toluene oxygenation (i.e., PhCH 3 vs PhCD 3 substrates). Proposed courses of reaction are presented, including the possible involvement of PhCH 2OO (*) and its subsequent reaction with copper(I) complex, the latter derived from dynamic solution behavior of 7-O 2 . External TMPA ligand exchange for copper in 7-O 2 and O-O bond (re)formation chemistry, along with the ability to protonate 7-O 2 and release of H 2O 2 indicate the presence of an equilibrium between [{(6tbp)Cu (III)} 2(O (2-)) 2] (2+) ( 7-O 2 ) and a (mu-1,2)peroxodicopper(II) form.

In order to contribute to an understanding of the effects of thioether sulfur ligation in copper-O(2) reactivity, the tetradentate ligands L(N3S) (2-ethylthio-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-yl)methylethanamine) and L(N3S')(2-ethylthio-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-yl)ethylethanamine) have been synthesized. Corresponding copper(I) complexes, [CuI(L(N3S))]ClO(4) (1-ClO(4)), [CuI(L(N3S))]B(C(6)F(5))(4) (1-B(C(6)F(5))(4)), and [CuI(L(N3S'))]ClO(4) (2), were generated, and their redox properties, CO binding, and O(2)-reactivity were compared to the situation with analogous compounds having all nitrogen donor ligands, [CuI(TMPA)(MeCN)](+) and [Cu(I)(PMAP)](+) (TMPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine; PMAP = bis[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]-(2-pyridyl)methylamine). X-ray structures of 1-B(C(6)F(5))(4), a dimer, and copper(II) complex [Cu(II)(L(N3S))(MeOH)](ClO(4))(2) (3) were obtained; the latter possesses axial thioether coordination. At low temperature in CH(2)Cl(2), acetone, or 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MeTHF), 1 reacts with O(2) and generates an adduct formulated as an end-on peroxodicopper(II) complex [{Cu(II)(L(N3S))}(2)(mu-1,2-O(2)(2-))](2+) (4)){lambda(max) = 530 (epsilon approximately 9200 M(-1) cm(-1)) and 605 nm (epsilon approximately 11,800 M(-1) cm(-1))}; the number and relative intensity of LMCT UV-vis bands vary from those for [{Cu(II)(TMPA)}(2)(O(2)(2-))](2+) {lambda(max) = 524 nm (epsilon = 11,300 M(-1) cm(-1)) and 615 nm (epsilon = 5800 M(-1) cm(-1))} and are ascribed to electronic structure variation due to coordination geometry changes with the L(N3S) ligand. Resonance Raman spectroscopy confirms the end-on peroxo-formulation {nu(O-O) = 817 cm(-1) (16-18O(2) Delta = 46 cm(-1)) and nu(Cu-O) = 545 cm(-1) (16-18O(2) Delta = 26 cm(-1)); these values are lower in energy than those for [{Cu(II)(TMPA)}(2)(O(2)(2-))](2+) {nu(Cu-O) = 561 cm(-1) and nu(O-O) = 827 cm(-1)} and can be attributed to less electron density donation from the peroxide pi* orbitals to the Cu(II) ion. Complex 4 is the first copper-dioxygen adduct with thioether ligation; direct evidence comes from EXAFS spectroscopy {Cu K-edge; Cu-S = 2.4 Angstrom}. Following a [Cu(I)(L(N3S))](+)/O(2) reaction and warming, the L(N3S) thioether ligand is oxidized to the sulfoxide in a reaction modeling copper monooxygenase activity. By contrast, 2 is unreactive toward dioxygen probably due to its significantly increased Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox potential, an effect of ligand chelate ring size (in comparison to 1). Discussion of the relevance of the chemistry to copper enzyme O(2)-activation, and situations of biological stress involving methionine oxidation, is provided.

Magnesium compounds of tetradentate amino-bis(phenolato) ligands, Mg[L1] (1) and Mg[L2] (2) (where [L1] = 2-pyridyl-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methoxy-6-tert-butylphenolato), and [L2] = dimethylaminoethylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenolato)) were prepared. The proligands, H2[L1] and H2[L2] were reacted with di(n-butyl)magnesium in toluene to give the desired compounds in high yields. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit dimeric structures in solutions of non-coordinating solvents as observed by NMR spectroscopy and in the solid state as shown by the single crystal X-ray structure of 2. These compounds exhibit good activity for rac-lactide polymerization in solution and in molten lactide.

The first tritopic carborane-based linker, H3BCA (C15B24O6H30), based on closo-1,10-C2B8H10, has been synthesized and incorporated into a metal–organic framework (MOF), NU-700 (Cu3(BCA)2).

A systematic investigation of the factors governing the reaction product composition, hydrogen bonding, and symmetry was conducted in the MoO3/3-aminoquinuclidine/H2O system. Composition space analysis was performed through 36 individual reactions under mild hydrothermal conditions using racemic 3-aminoquinuclidine. Single crystals of three new compounds, [C7H16N2][Mo3O10] x H2O, [C7H16N2]2[Mo8O26] x H2O, and [C7H16N2]2[Mo8O26] x 4 H2O, were grown. The relative phase stabilities for these products are dependent upon the reactant mole fractions in the initial reaction gel. This phase stability information was used to direct the synthesis of two new noncentrosymmetric compounds, using either (S)-(-)-3-aminoquinuclidine dihydrochloride or (R)-(+)-3-aminoquinuclidine dihydrochloride. [(R)-C7H16N2]2[Mo8O26] and [(S)-C7H16N2]2[Mo8O26] both crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group P2(1) (No. 4), which has the polar crystal class 2 (C2). The second-harmonic generation activities were measured on sieved powders. The structure-directing properties of the molybdate components in each compound were determined using bond valence sums. The structures of all five compounds were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The directed synthesis of two noncentrosymmetric sulfated molybdates has been achieved through the use of chiral organic amines. Reaction gels containing either (R)-2-methylpiperazine or (S)-2-methylpiperazine, MoO3, H2SO4, and H2O were subjected to mild hydrothermal conditions, resulting in the growth of single crystals of [(R)-C5H14N2][(MoO3)3(SO4)]·H2O and [(S)-C5H14N2][(MoO3)3(SO4)]·H2O. These materials crystallize in the noncentroysmmetric space group P212121 (No. 19), which exhibits the enantiomorphic crystal class 222 (D2). The second harmonic generation activities were measured on sieved powders.

Flexible organic materials possessing useful electrical properties, such as ferroelectricity, are of crucial importance in the engineering of electronic devices. Up until now, however, only ferroelectric polymers have intrinsically met this flexibility requirement, leaving small-molecule organic ferroelectrics with room for improvement. Since both flexibility and ferroelectricity are rare properties on their own, combining them in one crystalline organic material is challenging. Herein, we report that trisubstituted haloimidazoles not only display ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity—the properties that originate from their non-centrosymmetric crystal lattice—but also lend their crystalline mechanical properties to fine-tuning in a controllable manner by disrupting the weak halogen bonds between the molecules. This element of control makes it possible to deliver another unique and highly desirable property, namely crystal flexibility. Moreover, the electrical properties are maintained in the flexible crystals., Mechanical flexibility gives organic ferroelectric materials a potential advantage over their inorganic counterparts, yet it is challenging to produce them. Owczarek et al. report flexible crystals based on trisubstituted haloimidazoles that show both ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties.

The synthesis of a permanently porous pillared-paddlewheel metal–organic framework (MOF) was achieved through transmetalation of Zn(II) with Ni(II). The MOF can be treated with liquid water, leading to the reversible displacement of 50% of its pillars by water molecules and resulting in a most unusual crystalline and permanently porous structure.

Ba3FeUS6 (I) and Ba3AgUS6 (II) are prepared by reactions of BaS, U, S, M (Fe or Ag), and Sb2S3 as flux (evacuated silica tubes, 1223 K, 8 d).

The compounds Ba3FeUS6 and Ba3AgUS6 have been synthesized by the reactions of BaS, U, S, and M (= Fe or Ag) at 1223 K. These two isostructural compounds crystallize in the K4CdCl6 structure type in the trigonal system in space group D3d(6)–R3c. Both structures feature infinite ∞(1)[MUS6(6–)] chains along c that are separated by Ba atoms. The ∞(1)[FeUS6(6–)] chains are formed by the face-sharing of US6 trigonal prisms with FeS6 octahedra; in contrast, the ∞(1)[AgUS6(6–)] chains are formed by the face-sharing of US6 octahedra with AgS6 trigonal prisms. The Ba3FeUS6 compound charge balances with 3 Ba(2+), 1 Fe(2+), 1 U4+, and 6 S(2–), whereas Ba3AgUS6 charge balances with 3 Ba(2+), 1 Ag(1+), 1 U(5+), and 6 S(2–). This structure offers a remarkable flexibility in terms of the oxidation state of the incorporated uranium depending on the oxidation state of the d-block metal. DFT calculations performed with the HSE functional have led to band gaps of 2.3 and 2.2 eV for Ba3FeUS6 and Ba3AgUS6, respectively. From resistivity measurements, the Arrhenius activation energies are 0.12(1) and 0.43(1) eV for Ba3FeUS6 and Ba3AgUS6, respectively.

A new strut containing an imidazolium tetracarboxylic acid core has been successfully incorporated into a microporous material using paddlewheel-coordinated copper(II) ions as nodes. Sorption studies conducted on this permanently microporous material imply that it can separate carbon dioxide from methane with high selectivity.

Single crystals of a new beta-octamolybdate salt containing protonated 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane cations were prepared under mild hydrothermal conditions. This compound, [C6H13N2]2[C6H14N2][Mo8O26], was then used as a starting material in the synthesis of [C6H13N2]6[Mo16O53F2].4H2O, which contains previously unreported [Mo16O53F2]12- anions. The structure-directing properties of gamma-[Mo8O26]4-, a likely intermediate in this pH-dependent transformation, are responsible for the site selection of the fluoride incorporation. [Mo16O53F2]12-, the largest reported polyoxofluoromolybdate cluster, expands upon the limited number of such anions in the literature. The structures of both compounds were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The title compound is synthesized ba solid state reaction of an equimolar mixture of the elements (evacuated silica tube, 1273 K, 99 h) followed by treatment in a Sb2Se3 flux under the same conditions.

Air-stable, heteroligated platinum(II) weak-link approach (WLA) tweezer and triple-layer complexes that possess P,X-Aryl hemilabile ligands (P^ = Ph2PCH2CH2-, X = chalcoethers or amines) have been synthesized via the halide-induced ligand rearrangement (HILR) reaction, using a one-pot, partial chloride-abstraction method. The approach is general and works with a variety of phosphine-based hemilabile ligands; when a P,S-Ph ligand is used as the relatively strongly chelating ligand, heteroligated complexes are formed cleanly when an ether- (P,O-Ph), amine- (P,N-Ph2), or fluorinated thioether-based (P,S-C6F4H) hemilabile ligand is used as the weakly chelating counterpart. The HILR reaction has also been used to synthesize bisplatinum(II) macrocycles free of oligomeric material without having to resort to the high-dilution conditions typical for macrocycle synthesis. This approach is complementary to the traditional WLA to the synthesis of macrocyclic complexes which typically proceeds via fully closed, chloride-free intermediates. The structures of the complexes may be toggled between semiopen (with only one chelating ligand) and fully closed (with both ligands chelating) via the abstraction and addition of chloride.

Recent work in the preparation of organically templated metal sulfates under hydrothermal conditions has been extended to include the sulfation of alpha-molybdena through the synthesis of [C(5)H(14)N(2)][(MoO(3))(3)(SO(4))].H(2)O. Single crystals were grown under hydrothermal conditions from molybdenum oxide, water, sulfuric acid, and an enantiomerically pure (R)-2-methylpiperazine source and characterized using both single-crystal X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. One-dimensional [(MoO(3))(3)(SO(4))](n)(2n-) chains, based on a neutral alpha-molybdena backbone, are connected through an extensive hydrogen-bonding network containing [C(5)H(14)N(2)](2+) cations and occluded water molecules. The direction of the hydrogen bonding is primarily dictated by the nucleophilicity of the respective oxide ligands, as determined using bond valence sums.

Gaining control over the assembly of mesoporous Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with modifiable metal nodes remains a challenge. The the topology is intriguing, particularly if considering postsynthetic modification, as it presents large sodalite-like cages surrounded by 12 interconnected 1D channels that allow for efficient diffusion of guest molecules throughout the structure. Herein, we demonstrate the first Zr MOF with the topology, NU-1200, which was synthesized by controlling the geometry of the organic building unit. In addition, by using NU-1200 as a platform, we perform solvent-assisted metal incorporation to form single-site metalated nodes, a process that is characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

An ambidentate dicarboxylic acid bipyridine ligand, (4,5-diazafluoren-9-ylidene) malonic acid (dfm), was synthesized for coordination to Ru(II) and mesoporous nanocrystalline (anatase) TiO(2) thin films. The dfm ligand provides a conjugated pathway from the pyridyl rings to the carbonyl carbons of the carboxylic acid groups. X-ray crystal structures of [Ru(bpy)(2)(dfm)]Cl(2) and the corresponding diethyl ester compound, [Ru(bpy)(2)(defm)](PF(6))(2), were obtained. The compounds displayed intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands in the visible region (ε11,000 M(-1) cm(-1) for [Ru(bpy)(2)(dfm)](PF(6))(2) in acetonitrile). Significant room temperature photoluminescence, PL, was absent in CH(3)CN but was observed at 77 K in a 4:1 EtOH:MeOH (v:v) glass. Cyclic voltammetry measurements revealed quasi-reversible Ru(III/II) electrochemistry. Ligand reductions were quasi-reversible for the diethyl ester compound [Ru(bpy)(2)(defm)](2+), but were irreversible for [Ru(bpy)(2)(dfm)](2+). Both compounds were anchored to TiO(2) thin films by overnight reactions in CH(3)CN to yield saturation surface coverages of 3 × 10(-8) mol/cm(2). Attenuated total reflection infrared measurements revealed that the [Ru(bpy)(2)(dfm)](2+) compound was present in the deprotonated carboxylate form when anchored to the TiO(2) surface. The MLCT excited states of both compounds injected electrons into TiO(2) with quantum yields of 0.70 in 0.1 M LiClO(4) CH(3)CN. Micro- to milli-second charge recombination yielded ground state products. In regenerative solar cells with 0.5 M LiI/0.05 M I(2) in CH(3)CN, the Ru(bpy)(2)(dfm)/TiO(2) displayed incident photon-to-current efficiencies of 0.7 at the absorption maximum. Under the same conditions, the diethylester compound was found to rapidly desorb from the TiO(2) surface.
